Deep Creek
Only a few minutes from downtown Bryson City, you’ll find Deep Creek – one of three entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park located in Swain County. Filled with day hike opportunities – including an easy walk to three waterfalls – creek tubing, fishing, picnicking and mountain biking, the area is a favorite of families as a fun and economical outdoor recreation option.
Waterfall Hike & Back Country Trails
Deep Creek offers a trio of spectacular cascades that are an easy hike – even for small children or strollers. Three Waterfalls Loop is 2.4 miles and features Tom Branch Falls, Juney Whank Falls and Indian Creek Falls, or do each separately.
Picnicking
A picnic area is open year round with plenty of tables and grills, restrooms and changing areas are also available. Fishing Deep Creek is one of the best cold water trout streams to be found in the Great Smokies. Anglers need a valid Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license – easily obtained at several locations in the Bryson City area – to fish within the national park.
Tubing
Floating down the cool and pristine waters of Deep Creek is by far one of the favorite pastimes for families. Carry your tube up the wide, gentle trail following the creek; then float back down again and again. There are several places to launch, both above the more challenging rapids and below for those who want a more peaceful drift down the stream.
The Road to Nowhere
On the map it may be called Lakeview Drive, but to locals and returning visitors it is the Road to Nowhere. A scenic mountain highway that takes you eight miles into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and ends at the mouth of a tunnel, The Road to Nowhere offers long range views of Lake Fontana and some of the best back country trails in the Smokies.
The Dragon
One of the most famous motorcycle and sport touring roads in the world, the Dragon offers 318 curves in 11 miles.
Newfound Gap
US 441 twists and winds its way from the Oconaluftee River Valley up and over a 5,000 foot divide in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering long-range views, forested tunnels and rushing rivers.
Hit the Road
Bryson City and the Great Smokies are known for their scenic winding roads that showcase the natural beauty of the area while being completely accessible to all types of motor vehicles. So, hit the road and remember – all roads lead to Bryson City!
The Blue Ridge Parkway
“America’s Favorite Drive” stretches from Cherokee, NC through Virginia. A nice short segment to drive would be the 26 miles from Cherokee to the Balsam Mountain exit at milepost 443, just west of Waynesville on US 74 or continue on to Asheville and make a day of it.
The Nantahala Gorge
Highway 19/74 west out of Bryson City takes you through the Nantahala Gorge, home to premier whitewater rafting and kayaking. This is a beautiful drive right next to the water with plenty of pulloffs and picnic spots.

Hit the Water
Whether you are fly fishing for native brook trout in a cold mountain stream, smallmouth or largemouth bass in beautiful Fontana Lake or rainbow or brown trout in one of the many stocked streams or rivers, Swain County and Bryson City host one of the most diverse fishing habitats in the world.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Nantahala National Forest offer hundreds of miles of spectacularly clear streams. Just a few minutes from Bryson City, the sparkling waters of Deep Creek are ripe for fly fishing, and many anglers enjoy the Nantahala River just west of town, particularly the section above the powerhouse on Wayah Road. The Little Tennessee River just west of Bryson City off Needmore Road is a wide, cold, boulder-strewn river perfect for smallmouth bass, brim, rock bass and muskie. The Cherokee Indian Reservation also offers a variety of fishing opportunities for the trout fisherman with regularly stocked streams, trophy waters and three trout ponds. Cherokee holds 4 tagged fish tournaments, a fly-fishing tournament in the trophy waters and a trout derby for children every year. If you prefer flat water fishing, Fontana Lake boasts one of the most diverse fish populations anywhere in the country. With depths of over 400 feet, many northern fish such as walleye, muskie and smallmouth bass are among favorites of local fishermen.
Fishing regulations To fish in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you must have either a valid North Carolina or Tennessee fishing license. You can purchase a basic North Carolina resident license – or a non-resident license – for a period of ten days or one year; there is an additional charge if you fish hatchery-supported trout waters. The ten-day cost for basic fishing for a NC resident is $9 (nonresidents pay $20). A NC resident may purchase a one-year license for $22, (non-residents pay $38). If you plan to fish outside the National Park, an additional trout privilege license is required at a cost of $15 for anyone (for one year). All license fees listed include the $2 transaction fee. Children under 16 do not need licenses when a parent is present. No license is required to fish in Cherokee Reservation waters, however, a tribal permit is required. The cost is $10 per day, $17 for 2-day, $27 for 3-day, and $47 for 5-day. Catch and Release Trophy Waters require an additional $75/year permit.

1702 RETURN OF STEAM In partnership with Swain County, GSMR is happy to announce that steam will return in 2016! The historic #1702 steam engine is undergoing a complete renovation and will soon triumphantly return to the GSMR fleet. Originally built in 1942 for the U.S. Army, the engine traveled all around the U.S. before ending up at the GSMR.
