In keeping with our holiday theme, our cover story takes you behind the scenes of the inaugural Christmas Con which took place last month and brought together fans from near and far. We at CM sponsored the event alongside the Official Sponsor, The Hallmark Channel, and spent three days meeting nearly 10,000 fans who shared their love for all things Christmas. Danica McKellar, known for her role on The Wonder Years and as the star of more than a dozen Hallmark films, was one of 20 celebrities who attended. But the real story is how it all began at a Thanksgiving Day gathering in Holmdel last year. Read all about it on page 44. To help you navigate a stress-free season, we’ve included a Holiday Guide section starting on page 38. There you can find the perfect gift for every person on your list, including a few you can take home and enjoy yourself. We ask that you Shop Local whenever you can. It’s our neighbors and friends who run our local businesses, and it’s a nice way to connect and share in our community. We at CM wish each of you and your loved ones all the joys and pleasures this time of year has to offer. Whatever and however you celebrate, may it be merry!
All my best to you,

Ladies Night Out Raises Funds for Educational Needs BY SUSAN MURPHY Holmdel Village School PSA sponsored its annual Ladies Night Out Raffle Basket Dinner held in October at Navesink Country Club in Middletown. Two hundred women attended the event that had a theme of Hats and Heels. The event included 120 raffle baskets, 30 grand prize baskets, and three luxury items, donated by local businesses and families. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the educational needs of Village Elementary School students. “The Village School PSA’s annual Ladies Night Out was once again a beautiful, fun-filled night," shared PSA President Julianne DeMatteo. We ate, drank, and danced with a Chanel bag and Christian Louboutins in our landscape (just to name a few) thanks to our extremely generous donors. The work and preparation that goes into making this night a huge success is unthinkable. Our board members and volunteers take valuable time from their families and careers to solicit, wrap, organize, and promote the event for the students of our beloved Village School. The support and contributions of the Holmdel community never cease to amaze, as the generosity seems limitless.”

Coldwell Banker to Host Holiday Toy Drive for Bridges at the Shore Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage is hosting its annual Holiday Toy Drive for Holmdel-based nonprofit Bridges at the Shore. The local brokerage will be a collection point where local residents can drop off new toys, books or gift cards for families in need throughout the Bayshore area. Bridges at the Shore is a program that builds bridges between people and communities in our area. It is a person-to-person effort, meeting the homeless and low-income face to face, offering friendship as well as food, blankets, and clothing. Although it began as a program of people in the suburbs going to meet with and help homeless folk in lower Manhattan, the program has now shifted to a local focus - serving low-income peo-
ple in the communities of Keyport, Red Bank, and Freehold. All donations can be dropped off at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage before December 12th located at 998 Holmdel Road in Holmdel. Anyone who would like to donate a gift but is unable to drop it off can contact Alice Houston at 732.673.6246 or email alicehouston@ monmouth.com for pick-up.

Docs Rock for a Cause We often hear about the “Joy of Giving”, although not all experience this joy as deeply as the members of Monmouth County’s own Docs of Rock. Six years ago, a few acquaintances with time-consuming careers by day found an outlet for their love of making music. What started as casual sessions solely for their own enjoyment, evolved into a talented band performing for area charitable organizations. Appreciating the significant cost of musical entertainment for these events, the Docs of Rock realized they could make a meaningful contribution to the community and also have an outlet for their creativity. Docs of Rock donates its performances and so far, the band has supported more than a dozen organizations which collectively have raised about three million dollars. Readers may recognize the band members from their daytime careers:

Larry Sykoff, Ed.D, Headmaster Emeritus, Ranney School; President, LSS Consulting Group, on guitar; David Lessing MD, Orthopedic Surgeon, on bass; Scott Woska, MD, Pain Management Specialist, on keyboards and sax, Ken Grossman, MD, Dermatologist, on drums; Gina Dinnocenzio, RN, vocals; Diana Smith, Veterinarian Technician- Oncology, vocals; and Brian Incremona, MD, Internist, vocals. The youngest member, Evan Woska, 11th grade Ranney class president, adds electric violin and sound engineering. And as satisfying as those daytime endeavors are, the band members derive great joy from their artistic sides too. It all began with Dr. Sykoff’s day-job and Ranney School fundraisers. “I had the privilege of playing guitar on several occasions at the Stone Pony with Bruce Springsteen as part of the school fundraisers Bruce hosted

for parents and faculty,” said Dr. Sykoff. “At these performances, he would introduce me as the “Doc of Rock” -- the origin of the band’s name. As good fortune would have it, I learned that one of our Ranney parents, Dave Lessing, was a bass player who also loved music. We decided to jam to see what we sounded like as a duo.” Next to join the jam sessions was Ken Grossman on drums. The trio met at Dr. Grossman’s home so regularly that the space became affectionately referred to as “Ken’s Basement.” Scott Woska on keyboards and sax was the next doctor introduced to the band, yet another Ranney School parent. Dr. Woska was assisting in the school’s music program, offering his talents in classical and rock music. He was invited to “Ken’s Basement” and the band reached a new level. “It didn’t take long
for us to realize that Scott’s participation was going to be a pivotal moment for the emerging band,” said Dr. Sykoff. “With the addition of Scott, the Docs of Rock was really born. His skill and leadership was indeed the tipping point.” The Docs of Rock play a variety of cover songs, always encouraging the audience to join in, dance, and sing along. And they do— including a visit on stage by Bobby Bandiera at one of the events. Band members each have a take on the music, and personal favorites have an influence. Dr. Lessing said the band mostly performs classic rock and R&B, but noted his favorite artist is Joni Mitchell. “As a composer, lyricist, performer, and painter she stands alone on the steps of Valhalla,” adding, “We are always listening for new songs that groove.” Dr. Grossman revealed, “My favorite genre of music is actually Broadway show music, with classic rock a close second.” When asked if the band plays original songs, Dr. Sykoff responded, “We are a cover band primarily, but the idea of writing our own music has always crossed our minds. It remains an aspirational goal. Scott (Woska) has written music in the past, and it would be his musical talent that would lead the band into this new undertaking.” Particularly unforgettable to the band

ect,” explained Dr. Woska. “We unfortunately lost our singer Erin Patrick to cancer three years ago. She was with us from the very beginning and is very special to us.”
“At each of these galas with 350 plus guests, we meet wounded veterans coping with all kinds of devastating disabilities, slowly working their way back into civilian

life,” said Dr. Sykoff. “Participating with the Foundation to help raise money to support these veterans manage overwhelming medical expenses is an unforgettable experience. Knowing our efforts help these veterans recover from both the complex physical and emotional wounds of combat remains the most memorable experience.” An event performed last month is especially close to their hearts and a very different format for the group. “We embarked on an unusual and special technological proj-

Using computers, screens, video footage and studio recordings we attempted to bring Erin ‘back to life’ as she sang ‘live’ with us on stage for her family and friends and supporters of a great charity.” Looking back on the last six years, Dr. Lessing reflected how he feels the power of music is well known yet poorly understood. He refers to himself as “grateful” for being able to “channel that mysterious and joyful energy from the stage to the dance floor.” Dr. Sykoff, speaking for the band added, “The Docs of Rock has become a charity band giving back to our community by supporting worthy causes that improve the lives of others. Many underserved and isolated people living in our community are in desperate need of the services. These non-profit organizations provide social, emotional and psychological sustenance and, most of all, hope. Combining this humanitarian commitment with our love of music remains an opportunity for which we are forever grateful.” Left to right: Eric Grossman, Dr. Larry Sykoff, Gina D’Innocenzio, RN, Dr. David Lessing (in background), Diana Smith, CVT, VTS (oncology), Dr. Ken Grossman, Dr. Kristin Scott, Evan Woska, and Dr. Scott Woska

As we flip the calendar to December and enter the holiday season, I’m beginning to pick up on changes where we are transitioning our desires, and therefore our “gifts”, toward an experiential society and economy. In a world where we are inundated with the availability of information and stuff (thanks to Google, Facebook and Amazon’s one day delivery), humans are pivoting toward other people and experiences as a source of fulfillment, which is a pleasant and surprising organic byproduct of a world that provides instant gratification. It somehow makes us much more aware of our relationships, which seem to be magnified during the spiritual holiday season. As cliché as it sounds, the gifts are the people, not the boxes of stuff. Regular readers know that the company I owned was on the 77th floor of Tower One on 9/11. As a byproduct of the rebuilding, we were provided much emotional support from generous responders, some in the form of many individual and group therapy sessions. One of the themes for me personally was, it is through perseverance that you package your life and your gifts; it’s not what happens, but how you handle what happens. What makes the holidays so demanding and festive? Maybe it has something to do with spending (sometimes taxing) quality time with family, pinned to tradition and religious morality. As the holiday stress level rises, along with the angst of coordinating all the family logistics and food, keep in mind that this snapshot in time will never happen again. The gift is the snapshot and perhaps, just maybe, the gift is ourselves. Before we can have the proverbial Peace on Earth, we must have peace within ourselves – so let’s wrap our gift thoughtfully. As we sit in the midst of our holiday season, I am reminded of some of the gifts we explored in those therapy sessions when all seemed lost. RESPECT: On a scale of 1-10, how much do you appreciate yourself? Respect yourself as a gift. Respect is not just a line from a Godfather movie; you respect yourself through your behavior, and the limits and latitudes you set on yourself
20
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
and your relationships. See the value and gift you bring to others. BE GENUINE & AUTHENTIC: At some point, we have all pushed beyond ourselves, and pretended to be someone we’re not – that’s how we grow. But pushed too far, people can spot it a mile away. The best way to be a gift and live your best life is by being genuine and authentic – be real. VALUES: These are your judgment of what you consider important in life. If family and personal relationships are important to you, then it’s a value. If being financially responsible is important to you, then it’s a value. One of the best ways to ensure a lasting relationship is by spending time with people who share your same values. Family plant these seeds (that we return to during the holiday), and friends grow your life – surround yourself in values. DON’T SETTLE: To settle means you’re willing to accept less than what you deserve. In most cases, you are simply taking what you think you can get. Seek and spend time with people that respect and value you, and never give up. SPEAK YOUR TRUTH: Be diplomatic. It doesn’t mean you have to be combative, rude or “call people out”. That will come across as angry; the “filter-less” truth will backfire. Seek and separate the truth in yourself and others. HAVE INTEGRITY: This means choosing to do what’s right even when it’s easier to do or choose something that would ultimately benefit you. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. Integrity will actually increase your confidence, and your ability to make the hard choices. People will see and respect that. BE KIND: It should go without saying, but you would be surprised how much kindness is overlooked, and it can go a long way. It only takes a few thoughtful seconds or words to be nice to someone, and few seconds to be thoughtless. My Table wishes YOUR Table a very happy Christmas, Chanukah, or whatever is the source of your morality and the reason to spend time with those you love. Remember to be kind – not just because it’s the holidays (holy-days)… but because THE GIFT IS YOU! - Greg Calderaro Throughout history, “The Table” symbolically represents a center of ideas, spirituality, family, discussion and education. Our “Table” setting follows this theme for friends and readers. Remember the Golden Rule – Keep it Safe & Keep it Simple. NJ College Students Write and Publish Book S TORY: SUSA N MU RPH Y
Holmdel resident Jessica Birk, a student at Rutgers, collaborated with fellow college student, Lauren Krasnoff of Guttenberg, NJ, to write, illustrate, and publish a picture book titled When Ellie Sang a G. Both are nineteen and sophomores at Rutgers. They met the first week of freshman year and soon discovered their mutual interests in playing tennis, the arts, and being leaders in Honors College Media Team, which led to their collaboration on the book project. Jessica shared the book incorporates the love of art, writing, and music that they share. “I’ve always been passionate about music and writing,” said Jessica. “Growing up, I played the piano, sang in choir, and wrote short stories. Thus, I knew I wanted to pursue creative endeavors in college

but also combine it with the more technical business side. This led me to major in Business with a Certificate of Recording Arts (a music technology class). In my free time, I love to write and produce music in my dorm room with my laptop and keyboard.” Lauren, who said she grew up creating art, noted that it has been a huge part of who she is. “Art has always been my passion, but even in my short time at Rutgers being able to grow as an artist and being surrounded by like-minded creatives has been so inspirational. When Jess approached me about illustrating this book, I was excited about the collaboration and being able to use my artistic skills to share a story about the arts. I am not anywhere near as musically talented as she is, but having been lucky enough to have a really strong art education growing up, I appre-

ciate how important it is for kids to have a foundation in music from a young age as well, and how this can shape their passion for learning and creating.” Prior to writing this book, Jessica said she wrote a short story collection about an owl who lost his beak. “But When Ellie Sang a G was the first book I’ve committed to finishing. The great Holmdel school system and amazing English teachers I’ve had along the way definitely helped me to finish it. For the picture book itself, I wanted a strong character to feature in it with a good moral, because as a little kid I loved listening to my parents read books at bedtime,” said Jessica. Writing and publishing this book was a year-long endeavor. “Growing up, music was such an important part in my life, whether it was dancing to ABBA with my family, singing Christmas carols, or putting on small concerts,” said Jessica. “The theme of music came from learning about the budget cuts to Music Education around the country. I was extremely alarmed. There are countless statistics that prove the merit of music education on problem solving, brain function, and stress. We definitely need to place more value on music education. I hoped that by writing this book, I could bring a little bit of music back into children’s lives, as it has had such a notable impact on my life. In coming up with the idea, I thought how funny would it be if we have a singer who performs every week, who can sing every note perfectly except for one? How would she cope with that?” Jessica is in the process of producing another children’s book about a burping alien, which will be illustrated by a Holmdel resident and is due to be published next year. Jessica shared that she has big future goals. “I hope to combine my love for music, writing, and business and go into the music/film industry. I’d love to help produce creative content.” “When Ellie Sang a G makes a perfect gift for a three to seven-year-old and is available online from Amazon and Barnes&Noble.com,” said Jessica. “There is a book reading event planned in December at the Barnes and Nobles in Holmdel, where you can have your copy signed by the author, or just come by and say hi. Hope to see you there and Happy Holidays!”

My next business goal: Being a hairdresser for 20 something years, I did a lot of editorial work with professional photographers on magazine shoots and always had an eye from a photographer’s view. I have always been extremely creative and majored in Illustration at The Fashion Institute of Technology where I first took photography classes. I am now pursuing my love of photography as my new second location has a full photography studio with all the bells and whistles, a room full of just accessories, vintage jewelry, designer hats, fun props, and a full wardrobe closet that is every girl’s dream. My photo sessions are an experience, we have a team of stylists who make you feel like a celebrity just like at a professional shoot. Whether it be a children’s portrait or boudoir, every photo is a piece of art meant to be treasured for years to come.
Those who have most influenced my life and career: My parents. They moved here from Italy and have always worked so hard to provide, making me understand the value of a dollar. Also my husband, Ralph, who supports me 100% no matter what, he’s my rock and my voice of reason.
The most challenging part of what I do: Every day brings new challenges, most harder than the previous, but if they didn’t happen I would never grow. So I grin and bear it and learn from them.
What I’d like you to know about me: The birth of my first child in 2006 really pushed me to make a concerted effort to rid my home and business of ugly chemicals and toxins. During the next few years I adapted to a green lifestyle, which I incorporated at my business, becoming the first and only green salon/spa in Staten Island. My staff and I utilize every encounter with clients to inspire green beauty awareness and positive self-image from within.
Best life tip to share: Life isn’t measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Favorite quote: You get what you give!

Awards I’ve won and organizations I support: Grand Prize winner for Community Impact for our green efforts from Wella Professional and the recipient of the first Staten Island Green Award. We work with On Your Mark in Staten Island where we employ autistic adults and take part in a gardening program where we provide areas to grow herbs and vegetables for the cafe. I’ve also been volunteering with Clean Ocean Action for the past 10 years.

The Frances Foundation held its 15th annual Bow Ties and Pearls Gala at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa in Long Branch. More than 1,000 guests and volunteers attended the event, which honored 62 pediatric cancer families, cheered for 40 warriors, and remembered 21 angels. It was a bittersweet evening filled with memories and some tears, yet filled with fun, food, and entertainment. During the awards portion of the evening, Jen Scarpa and Christina Alexsandrowski received the Volunteers of the Year Award for their work with The Frances Foundation’s Love Life event. The Frances Foundation 2019 Community Service Award was given to The Joe Namath Charitable Foundation and its co-founders Mike and Debbie Kogan, and included a special
video message from Jets Super Bowl Quarterback Joe Namath. The final award was given by Kelly Terry, President of the Mya Lin Terry Foundation for which The Frances Foundation was recognized for enriching the lives of pediatric cancer patients with peace, love and happiness. It was accepted by Robert L. Heugle, Jr., President and Executive Director of The Frances Foundation. “Our Bow Ties & Pearls 15th annual gala was a spectacular, magical evening thoroughly enjoyed by our guests and volunteers,” said Heugle. “Pediatric cancer warrior McKenzy Hupke, who has endured 27 surgeries, and warrior mom Susanne McMahon, sang a beautiful rendition of Go Brave as the Go Brave video was shown to our guests. This famous video includes

two Frances Foundation angels, Steph Bader and Antonio Santos. The very special highlight of the night is the smiles and joy on the faces of our warriors as these VIPs are individually announced to a song they choose and deliver a one word message to our guests and receive a special gift. This is the most unique part of our gala program that makes it an indescribable experience for our guests.” According to Heugle, during the last year, The Frances Foundation has sent warriors and their families on meaningful trips; hosted hospital holiday parties; and presented holiday gifts to the children; paid stressful household bills; and given more than $335,000 in smiles and assistance. HABCORE Expansion Project Breaks Ground in Red Bank

On November 15, HABCORE held a groundbreaking on a 4-unit expansion project on River Street in Red Bank. Funds have been donated by generous community individuals as well as New Jersey Natural Gas, the Lydia Collins deForest Charitable Trust, New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ National Housing Trust Fund, and the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation. HABCORE is a nonprofit organization in Red Bank that provides permanent housing and supportive services to homeless veter-
ans, families, and individuals with special needs in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Its mission is to provide permanent housing and individualized support, helping homeless families, veterans, and individuals with special needs move through crisis to stability, giving them the opportunity to improve their lives. This is the first time the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has donated to help house the homeless in Monmouth County. “The River Street project presented a unique op-
portunity for the Foundation to help realize our two-fold mission of ending the cycle of homelessness and hunger in the Red Bank community,” said Heather Goldfarb, Executive Director of JBJ Soul Foundation. “We are pleased to partner with HABCORE to provide affordable housing to those in need, while continuing our support in the community through the JBJ Soul Kitchen and JBJ & PBC Hope & Comfort Warming Center …all within walking distance of one another.” HABCORE’s goal is to grow continuously to meet the needs of the 665 estimated homeless in the Monmouth-Ocean region. “This generosity enables HABCORE to increase the number of affordable, supportive units in Red Bank by building onto the existing 100-year-old duplex which we’ve owned since 1992,” said Steve Heisman, Executive Director. “We have a distinguished track record for expanding services to meet the rising need for housing while continuously improving support to residents.” As part of HABCORE’s Independent Living Program, the residents will receive supportive services, such as training in job acquisition skills and financial literacy.
Parker Family Health Center Hosts Anniversary Kickoff Luncheon Story: Susan Murphy Parker Family Health Center (PFHC), a medical center located on Shrewsbury Avenue in Red Bank, is filled with excitement as it plans for their upcoming twentieth anniversary. Founded in July of 2000, the nonprofit facility provides free medical care for the uninsured of Monmouth County. More than 150 medical and non-medical volunteers support the core staff of the center, with additional specialists donating their time and talents at their private offices. Starting from a tiny donated trailer housed on a donated piece of land, the Center today is the primary healthcare facility for many Monmouth County families lacking affordable healthcare coverage, explained PFHC Administrator Jeanne Wagner. PFHC Board member Anita Roselle recently hosted a luncheon for the 16-member Anniversary Committee at her residence in Long Branch. This was to kickoff plans for the upcoming 2020 celebrations. The committee plans on hosting many exciting events in the coming months, with details to be announced after the holidays. Throughout the year, the committee will also be honoring many of the special friends and supporters who brought the dream of the health center to its fruition, shared Administrator Wagner. The Anniversary Committee is co-chaired by John Horl, PFHC Board Co-Chair, and Patricia Micale, PFHC Board member and Development Chair. “Because of the wonderful kindness and support of so many people, the Parker Family continues to impact the quality of healthcare in our community. This anniversary year will provide us the opportunity to thank all of these very special friends,” said Patricia Micale.

A Country Christmas Presented by The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee Slated for December 8th
Historic Montrose School at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive in Colts Neck will open for a traditional Christmas celebration this month.
Photos with Santa Claus, seasonal refreshments, music, and more will fill the historic Montrose one-room schoolhouse from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8. The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee is sponsoring this free, traditional holiday fest at the school at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive. Santa Claus will take time out from his busy schedule to pose for free photos taken by guests who should bring their own cameras, and Lillian Burry will read The Night Before Christmas to the children and adults alike. A Christmas tree inside the school will be festooned with decorations appropriate to the period. “Our Christmas open house last year was so popular, many have asked us to repeat it,” said Committee Chairperson Lillian Burry, a Monmouth County Freeholder and former Colts Neck Mayor. “Everyone on the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee enjoys preparing and opening Montrose School for special events that highlight our township’s unique role in American history and help keep our local history alive for future generations. We invite everyone to share in the warmth and historic significance of Montrose School during this community celebration.” Freeholder Burry negotiated the purchase of the school, the only publicly-owned one-room schoolhouse in Colts Neck, for $1 from the township’s former Historical Society more than a decade ago. The committee raises funds to continue to upgrade and maintain the school.

Newcomers and Neighbors Club Volunteer at Ronald McDonald House Recently, members from Newcomers & Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas spent an afternoon volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House of Central & Northern New Jersey, located in Long Branch. The ladies donated their time and talents as “Caring Cooks”, making a delicious supper for the families staying at the House. In order to help provide hot meals every night of the week, volunteer groups plan the menu, purchase the food, cook and serve the meal, and clean the kitchen afterwards. Ronald McDonald Homes world-wide provide a home-away-from-home to families of seriously ill and traumatically injured children who are being treated at nearby hospitals. GIVING BACK Kate Hershkowitz Celebrates Birthday in a Unique Way S TORY: SUSA N MU RPH Y
Kate Hershkowitz of Rumson may only be 12 but her compassion for others goes far beyond her years. Several years ago Kate decided that she wanted to help those in need and she coordinated that idea with the celebration of her birthday. “Three years ago, my mom and I were discussing my birthday. I really didn’t want anything in particular. My mom suggested that maybe we could raise money and make a donation to a specific charity or an organization,” explained Kate. “I decided that I wanted to collect something other than money so I asked my friends for food donations so that I could donate them to Lunch Break.” In three years, Kate has collected more than 400 pounds of food donations for Lunch Break. “The first year that I donated, my friends thought it was different, interesting and a nice gesture. However, when I did it the following year, they were all excited and wanted to help me raise more than I had the previous year. This past year, my friends really went crazy trying to surpass what I raised the second year. It has now become a ‘thing.’ My brother, Matthew, and sister, Ellie, think I am crazy to give up my birthday gifts, but the rest of my fami-
34
ly is extremely proud of me, especially my grandmother.” Kate’s mother, Marybeth, shared how proud she is of her daughter. “At first I was humbled and truly touched that Kate would want to forego receiving birthday presents and collect donations instead. However, when I truly thought about it, I was not surprised. Kate is special and unique. She has a zest for life that is unparalleled by anyone I have ever met. She truly finds joy in the simplest things. She has a special spirit about her that you realize once you get to know her. I was recently telling someone about this article and they said simply, ‘to know Kate is to love Kate.’ Trust me, her siblings agree that there is just something about her that sets her apart.” Patricia Micale of Holmdel, Kate’s maternal grandmother, is equally impressed with her. “Kate has always been a very thoughtful, caring, and kind girl. She truly cares about other people’s feelings and acts on it. Kate always has a sparkle in her eye and a big smile on her face. She’s a lot of fun to be around! I love her very much and am very proud of her.” Kate is a seventh grader at Forrestdale

School in Rumson. Her favorite subject is science and she enjoys hanging out with her friends, her dog Henry, skiing and playing tennis. Kate has also been a part of the Ocean Township United Soccer Association (OTUSA) for six years, where she plays soccer for the Ocean Outlaws. The food donations Kate collects each year are taken to Lunch Break in Red Bank. “Although I do not get to personally give the food to the people, I do volunteer there on occasion and I know that the recipients are extremely grateful for what they receive. I feel very fortunate and honored to be able to help people who are in need. I also think it is very important to raise awareness for the need of donations so close to my home. I want people to know that I will continue with this tradition and in the future encourage other people, besides just my friends and family to donate towards my contributions. My goal is to donate over 500 pounds of food next year.” The compassion, understanding and generosity that this preteen has at the age of 12 combined with her determination to continue helping her community is not only commendable but a shining example to follow.

Best Law Firms “Today, U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers publicly announce the Tenth Edition of the “Best Law Firms’ rankings. Congratulations to your firm on being included in this elite and extremely impressive group.” The receipt of this email thrust Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. into the upper echelon of peer reviewed law firms. Although the firm had been recognized as a “Best Law Firm” since 2017, Paras, Apy & Reiss was selected as a Best Law Firm, New Jersey Metro – Tier 1 in Family Law for 2020. According to the November 1, 2019 press release by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers, nearly 15,000 law firms were reviewed throughout the United States, but only 2,106 received a national law firm ranking. That puts Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. in a select group. We are even more proud of the fact that we did not solicit or campaign for this recognition. It is the product of the high regard in which our firm is held by other lawyers – our peers – who were asked their opinion of us. That is high praise, indeed.
Peter C. Paras
is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C.
This isn’t the only accolade the firm has received from its peers. Every year since 2003 Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. has been named to the “Bar Register of Preeminent Law Firms” by Martindale – Hubbell, which has provided peer review information to lawyers and the public since 1868. In addition, individual firm lawyers have been listed in “The Best Lawyers in America”, by U.S. News, designated “Preeminent Attorneys” by Martindale – Hubbell, and selected as “Super Lawyers” and “Rising Stars” by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. When selecting a lawyer or a law firm, high praise from peers is an important factor to consider. It means that, in our profession, the people in the best position to know the quality of our work have uniformly given us high marks. Most people about to go through divorce have had limited experience with lawyers. Selecting the right lawyer may just be the most important divorce – related decision to make. Why not be guided by what lawyers think is legal quality?
Selected as "Super Lawyer" by NJ Monthly 2006 - 2019. Included in Best Lawyers in America 2015 - 2019.
For more information please see the firm’s website at www.par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.

It began last Thanksgiving when four friends gathered in “It was great to have The Hallmark Channel come on board,” Holmdel for dinner. Best friends since 2007 when they met said Fligliola. “Their interactive booth was incredible, and we through their mutual love for the music group the Spice were honored to have them as the centerpiece of our show Girls, Christina Fligliola invited Liliana Kligman, Alexandra floor.” Isaza, and Trinh Ho to join her once again for their tradition A graduate of Holmdel High School, Fligliola is a singer/ of binging on favorite foods and decorating the tree while songwriter who attended college in New York and goes watching Christmas movies. Realizing they couldn’t be by the stage name Majesty. Her last dance single, Living in the only ones with holiday traditions wrapped around the the Moonlight, charted on Billboard and she’s due to start a television, they began kicking around a crazy idea that turned radio tour in England she had to postpone for the convention. into a dream they backed with hard work and a good deal She also has a power ballad called Invincible coming out in of elbow grease. That dream turned into Christmas Con 2019, January. the first convention of its kind, and a company called That’s 4 Entertainment run by the four friends. Fligliola’s background in the entertainment industry, along with Kligman who is a producer and runs Café Oscuro Films, Held for three days in November at the New Jersey Convention helped the fledgling event planners navigate all the moving and Expo Center in Edison, Christmas Con meshed together parts. Danica McKellar, actor, mathematics writer, and education advocate, was filming her upcoming movie, Christmas at Dollywood, the Saturday of the convention. The star, best known for her portrayal of Winnie Cooper in The Wonder Years, flew in on Sunday to meet with fans and host a panel discussion with close friend Actor Rachel Boston. Exhilarated from having worked so closely with Dolly Parton and having
had Dolly star alongside her in the movie, McKellar shared behind the scenes stories with the fans and her new found love for Dollywood. She also shared tips on engaging children with mathematics when an audience member and mom, Jenifer Santoro, Manasquan, asked for her daughter Ryleigh who was celebrating her eighth birthday at the convention. For anyone who watches the Hallmark channels, Christmas Con was a present to unwrap. There were limitless stories of how and why people attended. Two sisters met at the event, one who lives in Illinois the other in Florida, to share their love for the movies and the holiday. Four sisters from Brooklyn Ubered in with their mother as an early Christmas present and spent the day taking group pictures with their favorite stars. There were families everywhere, dads and kids, just as enthusiastic as the moms about the movies that are geared toward female audiences. And for every group of female friends there was a husband and wife older than sixty who gushed while meeting one of the performers.

“It was so much fun to meet so many of the Hallmark stars in person,” shared fan and convention attendee Gislaine Grondin of Middletown. “I couldn’t get over how genuinely kind and sweet they all were.” Both the fans and the actors expressed a genuine joy at coming together. Actor Nikki DeLoach, whose movie Two Turtle Doves was one of the first of the season on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, shared hugs with many attendees and had a blast surprising several fans by popping into their photos at The Hallmark Channel booth. When one fan told her how much her most recent film meant to her, DeLoach was visibly moved. “We made the movie for you,” answered DeLoach who has starred in several Hallmark movies and began her career more than 30 years ago as a Mouseketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club. “It’s about learning to enjoy the holidays again after losing someone you love. It’s my favorite movie I’ve made so far because I knew it would help and touch a lot of hearts.” Actor Lacey Chabert headlined the convention, with Actor Jonathan Bennett serving as host. The two are well-known for their movie Mean Girls and Bennett initiated a fan-based social media push for the two to be teamed in a Hallmark movie next year. The pair hosted a celebrity panel together and started the convention festivities the first night by lighting the 17-foot Christmas Tree in the center of the “Town Square”. Both said many times how much fun they were having, and how much it meant to them to meet so many fans. Chabert and Bennett said they are on-board for Christmas Con 2020.

“For me, my favorite part was the tree lighting,” said Fligliola. “That energy walking through the crowd behind Lacey (Chabert) as she went out to light the first ever Christmas Con tree was electric. It was thrilling to watch her have that incredible moment with her fans and one I won’t forget.” Actors in attendance: Alicia Witt, Andrew Walker, Ashley Williams, Cameron Mathison, Chad Michael Murray, Danica McKellar, Daniel Franzese, Erin Krakow, Holly Robinson Peete, Jack Wagner, Jackee Harry, Jesse Metcalfe, Jonathan Bennett, Lacey Chabert, Melissa Joan Hart, Melissa Clair Egan, Nikki DeLoach, Paul Greene, Rachel Boston, and Ryan Paevey. Home Away From Home Academy Honors Veterans On November 11, Home Away From Home Academy hosted a Veteran’s Day ceremony at Piazza di Roma on Route 34 in Aberdeen. Owners Phyllis and Carmine Visone invited veterans and their families within their school community to participate in this memorable event. It began with a special performance of “God Bless America” sung by kindergarten students accompanied by bagpiper Frank Johnson, the bagpipe band teacher at Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft.
Chuck McDermott, Joe Ferraro, Robert Williams, the late Edward Almendinger, and Richard Wallace, who received a standing ovation as a 95-year-old WWII veteran. In addition, the Academy also honored Matawan-Aberdeen School District Superintendent, Dr. J. Majka, who served as a Marine, and although he could not attend the event, Army veteran and co-host of Fox and Friends, Pete Hegseth. Hegseth is the parent of a child attending the Academy, and he is passionate about being the voice for veterans across the nation, because he knows the struggles of returning home after service.
The event commenced with a heartfelt speech by Aberdeen Township Mayor Fred Tagliarini who so proudly recognized the service given by those present at the event, as well as all the individuals who have served and continue to serve across our nation. The Mayor and Carmine then presented each veteran with a commemorative certificate, as a short “The entire event was emotional and heartfelt, and all who attended bio about each person, their rank, years of service, and war served was were deeply touched”, said Phyllis Visone. All the men and women announced. The list of veterans included parents, grandparents, and who served should have the opportunity to be formally thanked for a great-grandparent of students enrolled in Home Away From Home their bravery and vigilance in defending the rights and freedoms of all Academy: David Leach, Ryan Kaplan, Mike Alfieri, Charles Tronicke, Americans.”
Ribbon Cutting Event Celebrating Collier High School Kateri Program Located in the Wickatunk Section of Marlboro, Collier High School, a state-approved, private, non-profit school for students whose needs cannot be met within the public school, proudly celebrated its new program, Collier High School Kateri Program, and the completion of its new permanent space. Thanks, largely in part to a generous donation, Collier was able to renovate the third floor of Smith Hall to create a space that was more conducive to the students’ needs. The newly renovated space includes a community room where students and staff “check in” in the mornings, as well as four large instructional areas, confidential offices for social workers and administration to provide quality education and therapeutic services. The décor creates a very calming and comfortable environment that allows students to feel relaxed and safe. Furthermore, the new, larger space enables the Kateri Program to enroll more students thus allowing more local youth to receive the benefits from this crucial program of Collier School.

Monmouth County donated 118 boxes of care packages to the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund. The County-wide donation drive was spearheaded by Freeholder Lillian G. Burry and with the help of the Colts Neck High School ROTC students, care packages were assembled to be shipped out to troops stationed overseas.
County Donates 118 Boxes of “Care” Packages Monmouth County donated 118 boxes of care packages to the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund, a local nonprofit organization committed to improving the morale and welfare of members of the United States Armed Forces as well as their families. This effort was spearheaded by Freeholder Lillian G. Burry.
co-founder of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund. “We would like to thank Freeholder Deputy Director Burry for her leadership and support – we hope this effort inspires other counties all over New Jersey to follow Monmouth County’s lead and run their own donation project. I know my son would be so proud of all that this donation drive accomplished.”
“I am extremely proud to have partnered up with the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund for the second year in a row,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry. “The drive was made successful by the donations and support of the residents of Monmouth County. We hope that these gestures of gratitude will brighten the holidays for our Armed Forces who are stationed overseas.”
The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund was founded in 2006 to honor the life and memory of Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, who was one of the four American soldiers killed by a roadside bomb during combat operations in Bayii, Iraq on Nov. 12, 2005.
The County-wide drive collected food, drinks, snacks, personal care items, and more using collection boxes that were set up at several Monmouth County buildings. The supplies were then assembled into care packages with handwritten notes of gratitude from students in the ROTC programs at MAST and Colts Neck High School, representatives from the State Police, Coast Guard, Freeholder Burry, and the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund. “The dedication from the students in the ROTC programs has been a true testament in our efforts to aid the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund,” said Freeholder Burry. “They collected items, wrote letters to our Armed Forces, assembled care packages and helped load the packages into boxes.” The boxes of care packages were shipped out to our troops stationed overseas and will be delivered in time for the holiday season. “We are so grateful to everyone in Monmouth County who helped keep the memory of my son alive by participating in this drive and making it so successful,” said Marion Zilinski,

Local Dentist Collects Halloween Candy for the Troops It’s rare that children would let their dentist see them with their arms full of candy, but youngsters lined up early November at Newman Springs Dental Care carrying sugary treats in boxes and bags. To help prevent cavities and other unpleasantries associated with excess sugar consumption, the dental office offered its 9th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, a few days after “trick or treat” day. Children brought their excess spoils in exchange for $1 per pound turned in, flashing toothbrushes, and snacks. “All collected candy was individually boxed up and sent to troops overseas,” said Dr. Aparna Menon. The children also wrote letters to the soldiers to include with the packages. “Most youngsters were willing to part with their candy, with some even turning down the money.” The event yielded 419 pounds of candy. Lucille Springer and Ronnie Miccuilla of American Recreational Military Services (ARMS.org) will make sure that the candy gets to our troops in individualized packages. The employees of this Lincroft practice donated toothbrushes and floss so the candy could be enjoyed without guilt.

FULFILL (formerly The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties) teamed up with Joe Leone’s Italian Specialties and Johnson’s Restaurant Equipment for the Inaugural “Chop Hunger” Competition, on November 4 at Doolan’s Shore Club in Spring Lake Heights. Several teams competed to be the “Chop Hunger” Champion, a title that ultimately went to the Student Government Association Team from Monmouth University for its salmon and risotto dish. Among the judges were Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2019 Ava Tortorici of Montclair, New Jersey Senator Vin Gopal, and 101.5 FM Radio Talk Show Host Eric Scott with the “Foodie Fridays” segment. “It was a great night of fine food, drinks, friendly competition, and dancing to Brian Kirk and the Jirks. A special thank you to my friend, Celebrity Chef Joe Leone, who served as the Master of Ceremonies. The best part is we raised much needed funds to feed the 136,000 neighbors we serve in Monmouth and Ocean Counties,

The other four teams in this “Chopped” style LIVE competition were from Caneda’s White Rooster in Toms River, Fulfill in Neptune, Bayonne Community Bank, and Brookdale Community College. A special thank you to Saker ShopRites for donating all the food for this fundraiser. FAMILY & CHILDREN’S SERVICE (FCS), Monmouth County’s oldest, private nonprofit social service agency, held its 2019 Leading Lights Gala on November 16. More than 200 guests gathered at Navesink Country Club in Middletown, to celebrate 110 years of FCS and pay tribute to three exceptional honorees: Debbie O’Donoghue, Tracey L. Wolfman, and the Church & Dwight Employee Giving Fund, Inc. The event raised about $100,000 for FCS programs and services. The Gala is FCS’s largest fundraiser of the year and helps support it’s 13 programs and services that address issues of homelessness; neglect abuse and exploitation; health and respite care; long-term care planning; childhood literacy and obesity. In addition to a live and silent auction, a Call for Funds was issued for FCS’s Client Emergency Relief Fund (CERF), the creation of which was spearheaded by honoree Debbie O’Donoghue in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
30 years her dedication to working with the elderly population and her specialized knowledge in Alzheimer’s have helped countless people afflicted with the disease and their caregivers. The second 2019 Leading Lights Award was presented to the Church & Dwight Employee Giving Fund, Inc. for their employees’ generous and continuous contributions to FCS throughout the years. The Church & Dwight EGF is the workplace giving program of Church & Dwight Co., Inc. It supports charitable organizations in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania, the region where the company’s corporate headquarters is located and where many employees reside. The final 2019 Leading Lights Award was presented to Debbie O’Donoghue for her longstanding volunteer efforts and strong leadership skills which led to her being appointed to the agency’s board of directors in 2004, where she served with distinction for 15 years.
The highlight for the evening was the recognition of FCS’s “Leading Lights.” FCS CEO Colleen Verriest presented the agency’s 2019 Leading Lights Awards, the first of which honored Tracey L. Wolfman; a long-standing and dependable community partner of FCS, working closely with its Community Support Services. Tracey is the owner and CEO of We Care Adult Day Care, Inc. For the last
The success of the 2019 Leading Lights Gala would not have been made possible without the dedicated support of FCS’s Gala co-chairs Tiffany Senft, Jill Gemmel, Karen Gibbens and Diane Hayes, FCS Gala committee, FCS board of directors, underwriters, sponsors, auction donors and all those who attended. ME E T YO U R N E I GHBO R
CHRIS CORLEY He’s a musician, guitarist, songwriter, and teacher and you’ve most likely heard one of his songs while watching Netflix or at the local movie house. He was also involved in Rumson Country Day School’s (RCDS) music program. Meet your neighbor, Chris Corley.
S TOR Y: CAT H Y PAD I L L A
What I do and where I’m from: I teach guitar to clients in their homes in the Rumson, Middletown, Holmdel, Red Bank, Little Silver, Fair Haven, and Atlantic Highlands areas. I have lived in Red Bank for six months. I’ve lived in Monmouth County for the last 10+ years, in Asbury and mostly Middletown. How I first got into music: When I was 15 I started seriously playing guitar, and my life forever changed. Years before my grandfather had given me a beat-up acoustic guitar that I always messed around with. A burning desire to be a musician/guitarist was growing inside me, but I didn’t have a way to let it out. Then my grandfather passed, and my mom came back from being with him in Florida. She brought me an electric guitar from my cousin. How my music found its way to the movies: A publishing company in Los Angeles places my music and songs in movies and on TV. It’s great to have a song in a movie on Netflix; my latest soundtrack placement is a reggae song in Falling Inn Love. It’s the background song for one minute in a dinner scene. The first main placement I had was in an indie movie with bigger Hollywood actors (Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Billy Crudup) called Thin Ice (2012). My song was in the opening credits fading under
68
Greg Kinnear’s intro dialog. When it came out I saw this movie in a small, really nice independent movie theater in Montclair. The co-writer of that song, Leave Our Worries, is Holmdel musician/lawyer Jon D’Agostino. How I got started in teaching in Rumson: I privately taught a lot of children that went to Rumson Country Day School and there was a bit of a buzz about it with the moms and kids. So when the school wanted to start a music group, the kids had asked for an after-school program, I was the prime candidate. It was great, but it had its issues. When you have almost ten 8 to 12-year-old children in a room together with guitars and amps, it could have been a hit reality show! I still teach guitar six days a week. The most rewarding part of my career: Creating something from nothing (writing music), expressing that via the guitar and sharing/teaching that with others as well. My next goal: To place one of my songs with a talented recording artist and have it well received with the public. The most challenging part of what I do: The freelance life in this world, it has its benefits and challenges.
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
Best life tip to share: Make a life with what you’re best at and what you love. My favorite quotes: “We are the music makers and we are the dreamer of dreams” and “Be so good they can’t ignore you”. Some of my favorite songs: Gimme Shelter, Don’t You Forget About Me, Ode To Joy, Comfortably Numb, 7, Sir Duke, Mission Impossible Theme, The Chain, Crazy, Blinded By the Light, Freewill, Let’s Go, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Some of my favorite artists: John Coltrane, Prince, Allan Holdsworth, Beethoven, SRV, Seal, Frank Gambale, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin. If I had to pick one that has most influenced me, that’s tough but, it would be John Coltrane. He’s an innovator, technically brilliant, groundbreaking, and inspiring. My professional associations and awards I have won: ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). I’ve won a Garden State Film Festival ‘Movie Music Award’ for an opening credits soundtrack song in a movie starring Oscar nominated Greg Kinnear, Emmy nominated David Harbour (Stranger Things), Oscar winner Alan Arkin, and Tony winner Billy Crudup.

MATER DEI PREP DEDICATES NEW PEACE POLE ON CAMPUS THE SENIOR MEMBERS of the Mater Dei
Prep Capstone Academy and members of the Global Leaders hosted a community event in November placing a Peace Pole in front of the school in support of world peace. The Peace Pole can be found in all 192 member countries of the United Nations and is considered a global representation of peace. Located at the entrance to the school, it will be a constant reminder to anyone who enters that peace is something to work for and should be appreciated once acquired.
The students wanted to create a day to bring together students and a community of religious leaders to recognize paths to God and peace. As a way of incorporating faith and Catholicism into the event, a plaque with the prayer of Saint Francis, the patron saint of peace, was
placed alongside the Peace Pole. The pole has the prayer, “May peace prevail on Earth” inscribed on it in various languages. Special guests included Fr. Rick Osborne, Deacon Martin McMahon,
Rev. Dr. Cornell Edmonds of Church of the Covenant, Pastor Chris Pascarella of Lincroft Bible Church, and Director of Middletown Public Library Heather Adolsen.

OAK HILL ACADEMY BOYS SOCCER TEAM WINS TITLE
THE OAK HILL ACADEMY Boys Soccer Team
defeated the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School from Asbury Park by a score of 5-2 to win the Ferris Antoon/Jim Carrigan Monmouth County Intermediate School Soccer League (MCISSL) Liberty Conference title. Oak Hill hosted the championship as the higher seed and “Division F” champions after Asbury Park upset #1 seed St. Leo’s in a penalty kick shootout. It was a true team effort as all 21 team members contributed at some point as the Mustangs put together their best and most cohesive game of the season to defeat Asbury for the third time this fall. They finished with a final record of 10-1-1, and it was the first title for the boys in 28 seasons (1991).

THE TURNING POINT HOSTS FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT LADACIN NETWORK THE TURNING POINT hosted the 14th annual “Eat, Drink and
Be Caring…Serving the Mission of LADACIN Network” in early November at all its locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties. The weekend fundraiser raised $21,678 to support LADACIN Network’s educational, therapeutic, social, residential, and support services. An overall total of $203,574 has been raised since the event began in 2007.
Owners Kirk and Pam Ruoff and their staff members are the reason behind the success of this fundraiser. With a history of philanthropy and fundraising for various causes, they raise awareness and rally support for LADACIN by promoting the fundraiser to restaurant patrons. In return for a donation of $25 or more to LADACIN, the Turning Point offered guests gift cards for free entrees on a future visit. LADACIN Network serves more than 3,500 infants, children, and adults with complex physical and developmental disabilities or delays in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. DONNALYN GIEGERICH HONORED WITH THE 2019 WOMAN ENTREPRENEURS ROCK AWARD FOR HUMANITARIANISM AND BADDASSERY THE NEW JERSEY SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER at
Brookdale Community College held its sixth annual Women Entrepreneurs Rock at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park. DonnaLyn Giegerich of Red Bank, President of DLG Consulting, was honored with the 2019 Woman Entrepreneurs Rock Award for Humanitarianism and Baddassery.
Scheduled during International Women Entrepreneurship Week, the goal of “Women Entrepreneurs Rock” (also known as WeRock) was to facilitate a real dialog about topics relevant to women in business. The keynote speaker was Tracy Abby-White, Sr. Director of Sales Enablement at IronNet Cybersecurity and current chair of the Brookdale Board of Trustees. According to the March 2019 edition of Success magazine, “the new arena for business is being built from recycled shards of the glass ceiling.” Today, 40% of businesses in the United States are women-owned. In fact, women are starting businesses in droves! Women started 1,821 net new businesses every day last year. This rise in female entrepreneurship is attributed to both opportunity and necessity according to the 2018 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report from American Express. Women surveyed mention four major motivations: having the experience to start a successful enterprise, financial readiness, following a passion, and desiring flexibility in their lives.

The focus this year was on women entrepreneurs leading the way in philanthropy and their commitment to giving back. Women have always been integral volunteers, but as female philanthropists gain in wealth and influence, they are reinventing philanthropy, prioritizing business solutions to social problems. As Melinda Gates said, “They know their community. They know what needs to get done.” Even better news is that according to Forbes, “most of the wealth that will change hands in the coming decades is likely to go to women!”

DO YOU KNOW PEOPLE WHO AVOID DENTAL TREATMENT BECAUSE OF SERIOUS OBSTACLES? • Fear and anxiety
• ADD/ADHD
• Difficulty Getting numb
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Down Syndrome or other developmental disabilities
• Acute gag reflex
• Parkinson’ disease, cerebral Palsy or other conditions that cause involuntary shaking • Autism, autism-spectrum disorders
• Dental phobias of all kinds • Inability to communicate or to understand and follow simple instructions
• The need for extensive treatment or restoration that might take many appointments and cause undue stress and anxiety
A significant part of our practice involves treating patients with special needs. This includes people who are extremely anxious and phobic. Individuals with mental and physical challenges, such as neurological disorders like Parkinson’s or epilepsy, can experience tremors or seizures. Individuals on the autism spectrum, or those with Down Syndrome, may not understand the dentist means to help and to take care of them. Sedation helps to calm their fears and give them an easier and more comfortable experience. Similarly, with Alzheimer’s and dementia, decreased reasoning capacity can keep the patient from cooperating. When the patient is asleep, the dentist can do the work that the patient needs.
