COVID-19 PARENTING

Talking about COVID-19

Be willing to talk. They will already have heard something. Silence and secrets do not protect our children. Honesty and openness do. Think about how much they will understand. You know them best.

Be open and listen

It is OK not to know the answers

Allow your child to talk freely. Ask them open questions and find out how much they already know.

It is fine to say “We don’t know, but we are working on it; or we don’t know, ‘but we think’.” Use this as an opportunity to learn something new with your child!

Be honest Always answer their questions truthfully. Think about how old your child is and how much they can understand.

Be supportive Your child may be scared or confused. Give them space to share how they are feeling and let them know you are there for them.

One of the toughest predicaments a small business has, is to deal with the unknown or a disaster. In these challenging times it’s both. Tough decisions are made and thinking outside the box is the way to survive and keep employees, if able.

Communities are coming together to support local small businesses by buying gift cards for products and services or purchasing meals and fresh foods for their families or neighbors to stay healthy. Some businesses have taken up sewing masks and gowns with the donations of time, materials and money from the community. Some have changed their production lines to support the products needed, like sanitizer. So, what option does small business have to fight this Covid monster? Here are some possibilities: Federal Level: 2 separate loan programs to provide economic relief for employers, independent contractors or free lancers that need assistance with payroll, rent and utilities with an opportunity for loan forgiveness.

Molasses Creek Dog Training With the onset of Covid19 and technology many industries are changing, dog training is no exception. While it may seem counter-intuitive to not have someone come to your home to train your dog, distance (virtual) dog training can be a very successful, cost-effective and convenient way to get personalized training for you and your dog. It allows you to get the help you need without leaving the comfort of your home and gives you access to quality training. But, it can feel weird to not have someone in person to see your home and your dog and to train the dog. After all, isn’t that what you’re paying for? (Sort of. Read on.) So, I thought it would be good to review how distance training works.

Distance training has been used successfully for reactive dogs and separation anxiety for quite a while, to help remove any false results by the presence of the trainer. The “trainer effect,” as it’s sometimes called, can cause the dog to behave differently and that’s not helpful when we’re trying to replicate real world scenarios. Remote training removes this obstacle for any issue, since the dog is in their normal environment, with its familiar people, in a low distraction environment. And here’s a little secret, many behavior issues really don’t require a trainer to actually do the training, if the owner is willing to do some work. Yes, sometimes it can be more efficient to do something like day training where the trainer does the heavy lifting of teaching the dog. But, in reality, those skills still need to get “transferred” to the owner. A lot of dog training is giving the humans the tools they need to work with, live with and help the dog. I can easily teach/ coach someone remotely on what to do when and how to implement the customized management, enrichment and training plans I’ve designed for their dog and their dog’s issues, for less the cost of an in-person session. You get all the same handouts, knowledge and access as in person clients, but without feeling like you need to clean your house before the trainer arrives! ccmonthly.com | 18

Through the use of technology (computer or smart phone), we can use free video services like Zoom, Messenger or Skype to do training sessions in real time. If you can click a link or use a phone, you can do remote training! Live video sessions are especially good for basic obedience behaviors, food or resource guarding and body handling cases because I can coach in real time based on my observations. I can point out, and we can discuss, observations like what I’m seeing in terms of body language, and then make the decision when to push the dog to the next step in the plan. In other cases, like dogs who are afraid of strangers, remote training can actually be better for the dog because we’re not triggering the dog’s fear by having a stranger (the trainer) come into their home. A good trainer doesn’t need to see the dog being fearful or aggressive to help them. I know what resource guarding looks like – I don’t need the dog intentionally pushed over threshold to show me how he growls or tries to bite Celebrating Community

In cases like stranger danger, I often send clients on missions, like to a park or shopping center parking lot, to work on the training plan at a safe distance and clients will record short video clips of themselves working with their dog (usually with their phone, sometimes with a friend filming or using an inexpensive tripod – no fancy equipment needed) and then send those to me, via text or upload, for review/feedback. This allows me to see the client’s training mechanics, the dog’s normal response and then I can tweak plans as needed or coach the client on what to do to make things more efficient for the next time. Remote training can be very successful. I’ve successfully helped a wide variety of cases remotely including, loose leash walking, jumping, stranger danger, house training (adults and puppies), crate training, pre-puppy/new dog prep, fear of children, fear of men, resource guarding, leash reactivity, barking and more! It’s really super easy to teach your dog basic manners!

Tips for Coping with

THE CORONA VIRUS CRISIS By Dr. Anya DeRosa

We hear it all the time, we are in uncharted waters these days, trying to ﬁgure out how to navigate the “new normal” of life during a pandemic. In some ways, we are experiencing similar challenges – life as usual has been interrupted, routines have changed, previously fully stocked store shelves are emptier, social connections are distanced, kids of all ages are learning from home. In other ways, we have unique situations. Some are ﬁghting on the front lines, some adjusting to working from home, while others are suddenly unemployed. Some folks are quietly thankful for the break from a hectic life, some feeling overwhelmed by new demands, and others feeling isolated and bored. Some are enjoying good health while others are ill, at higher risk and fearful, or coping with illness or the loss of loved ones. One thing we all share at the moment is a deep sense of uncertainty and with it, higher levels of stress, as our nervous system automatically gears up to protect us from this threat. It is completely healthy and normal to feel anxious, angry, tired, or even numb right now. Recognizing this can help us to be more patient with ourselves and others, and it can also motivate us to take active steps to cope effectively to maintain good physical and emotional health with the following tips: 1) Focus on what you can control. Our brain’s natural tendency to focus on what we can’t control is designed to protect us, but when we’re not aware of this, it makes us feel worse. Instead, focus on establishing a daily routine that includes regular sleep / wake times, regular meals with good nutrition, exercise, fresh air / time outside while social distancing, time to accomplish tasks or projects, and pleasant activities like meditation, hobbies, reading, or TV.

2) Stay connected while social distancing. Schedule a virtual lunch or group chat with friends, check in with loved ones who might be more isolated, rekindle relationships that have fallen by the wayside during busier times. Use social media wisely – while supportive experiences can boost mood, if you notice feeling more distressed after looking at social media, take a break. 2) Pace yourself on the news. It is important to stay informed and up-to-date, but the research is clear on news exposure – too much can make you feel worse. Current guidelines suggest watching / reading updates no more than 15 – 30 minutes, once or twice a day. 3) Look for silver-linings. While our brains are designed to focus on the negative to protect us from harm, when we’re not aware of it this can also make life appear far more hopeless than it actually is. Focus on looking for the positives – fun activities to bring you closer to your family, beneﬁts to the environment with life on hold, the gift of time to tackle a project you’ve been putting off, the outpouring of gratitude and appreciation for your work if you’re a healthcare provider. 4) Be true to yourself. Research suggests unhealthy coping strategies can easily get out of hand during prolonged times of stress, and while healthy coping strategies can help us get through difﬁcult situations, sometimes these don’t feel like enough. If you notice that you’re using drugs or alcohol to cope, feeling angry enough to lash out, having a hard time getting out of bed or sleeping excessively, or are feeling so anxious you’re unable to sleep, concentrate or focus, be honest with yourself and reach out for professional help.
