The Heileg Hoch Deutschland Haus

Nestled in a corner of 4th and Seminary Street in Pennsburg lies a home.The official date for the home is 1750 but many feel it was built before that date. Based on that date the home is 268 years old at this time.

It was built by the Heileg family, a family of German immigrants. The area was farmed by this family for over a century. I have a post card that states the home was used as a hospital during the Revolutionary War when owned by the Heileg family.

This home was built before this was a country. The walls are solid local shale stone and vary in thickness. In the basement they are approximately two feet thick, in the attic the walls are about eight inches thick.

At one time the basement floor was brick.

There were four holes in the floor where water from a spring flowed through.

These were used to store butter and milk.

Ancestors of the Heilig’s feel the home was built as a fort for neighbors to gather in case of trouble. He bases this on running water in the basement and the thick walls.

Pennsburg was originally known as Heiligsville and was changed to Pennsburg in 1843. When the Englishspeaking people asked what country the German speaking people were from they said Deutschland (translated means Germany) so they became known as Pennsylvania Dutch.

My great, great, great grandfather (Elias) purchased the home in 1869 and it has remained in the Hoch family for almost 150 years. Elias came from the Oley area and did the opposite of most at the time.

Instead of heading west he came east.

I was always told the story that he rode up on a horse and asked what they

like the same one. My feeling is they don’t bother me, I’m not going to bother them.

I don’t believe there is another home in the area where the family lived in it for so long.

I was often told this is the oldest home in the area. I was also told Washington stayed here while his men foraged in the area for food for their armies. Heilig translated from German means holy and Hoch translated means high, so combined they mean holy high. It is my wish the home will be turned into a museum someday. It is something well worth saving. If it could only talk.

wanted for the house. They gave him a price and he paid them in gold right then and there. He purchased about 80 acres with the home and later he purchased more land. If you live in Pennsburg and trace your deed back, you will probably see his name on it. Elias’s obituary reads the oldest resident and one of the largest land owners in this borough.The deceased was considered to be an exceptionally bright Bible scholar.

I put so much time and money in this home I think I could have built two or three homes. No matter how bad the storm though I feel safe and comfortable. Most storms go pretty much unnoticed. I often think of all the people who lived and died in this home. I wonder how many were buried in the grounds of the home. My grandfather William died in what is now my kitchen. He was a very quiet man and said very little. The home was split in two at the time and doors led to each side. My mother took him dinner every night. She told me one night he said, “Thank you so much for taking care of me and doing all you do for me.” She said, “It was so out of character for him she was surprised.” The next morning, he was dead.

When the Hochs rebuilt the firebox they had their family name set in the fire back with bas relief bricks.

The front of colonial houses were called the “Money Side” because the dwellers wanted the best materials to be seen by the arriving visitors so the most money was spent to put the best materials in front. This was a common German custom in Pennsylvania.

Ghost stories abound, more from my wife, daughter and grandkids than from me. I was born in this home in 1946 and have lived in it ever since. Instead, let’s focus on Cheese. Gooey cheese, and lots of it. Garlic. Olive oil. Pesto. More cheese in the form of Ricotta. Flatbread. White sauce.

Because I sure heckin’ was! This delicious creation was the new “Grandpa Flatbread” and it’s so good that it’s guaranteed to become a new member of your family tree. Ya see what I did there?
