SHOWING THE NILE THE GRATITUDE IT DESERVED BY RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO
arshas Vaera contains the bulk of the Ten Plagues, beginning with the plague of Blood and continuing up to the plague of Locusts. The plagues begin with G-d's command to Moshe: "Say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt; over their rivers, over their canals, over their ponds, and over all their gatherings of water, and they shall become blood; there shall be blood in all the land of Egypt, and in the wood and in the stones.'" [Shmos 7:19] Rashi on this pasuk [verse] teaches that it was Aaron, rather than Moshe, was commanded to initiate this plague because the Nile protected Moshe when he was thrown into it as an infant. Therefore, Aaron initiated the plague of Blood and the plague of Frogs (in which the Nile was also smitten). The Gemara comments on this: A person should not cast stones into the well from which he has drunk.
P
This is the principle of Hakaras HaTov [recognizing a favor]. We learn from here that Hakaras HaTov applies even when the doer of the favor is only doing what he is supposed to do anyway. The Nile merely floated the 8 MARCH 2013
basket. That is the nature of water. It is a law of physics that something lighter than water floats on water. The Nile thus did not go out of its way to do anything special for Moshe. It just did what it has been doing since the beginning of time. And yet, we still learn from here that there is an obligation of Hakaras HaTov. This dispels a common practice among people. It is the nature of people to say: "Why do I need to say 'Thank you'? Why do I need to have HaKaros HaTov? –- He had to do it anyway!" Hakaras HaTov is not measured by the benefactor's efforts. It is measured by the impact on the recipient. When someone benefits from someone else –- whether the benefactor did or did not need to provide the benefit, he did or did not have to do it, whether it was or was not a bother for him, the beneficiary has a responsibility to recognize that he owes a debt of gratitude. The proof is the Nile River. It merely did what water does and yet Moshe Rabbeinu felt a sense of Hakaras HaTov. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

Pesach Messages By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob
Pesach is coming and it brings with it many messages. Rabbi Shimshon Pincus zt”l discussed some of the spiritual messages in his lectures. These include: a) Hashem loves us, his children, at all times, even if it doesn’t always feel that way to us. b) He loves us even with our imperfections, even when we are so full of sin, even in the 49th level of impurity. c) We can ask Him for miracles no matter what, and though we are undeserving, we should never underestimate the power of prayer, or the power of His love for us. These are messages we, as parents, can, in turn, convey to our children. That they should know that we love them, even when we make unpopular decisions that upset them, and we love them with all their imperfections, even if they may have hurt us, we love them nonetheless. We may be angry and we may insist on an apology, or consequences, but the love is untouchable. And, while we can’t make miracles, we will do our best to help them no matter what. Pesach communicates a parental attitude, about how a Tatty feels towards his children, or how a Mommy interacts with her
12 MARCH 2013
family, and about how each parent feels about the coming holiday. Sadly, the parental Pesach messages heard by our children are not always positive ones. Sometimes the message communicated is, “I dread Pesach coming, it’s so much work,” or “I’m so angry, no one is helping me enough,” often accompanied by yelling, criticism, and an overall bad feeling. These messages are not necessarily articulated explicitly, but are nonetheless clearly understood. There is a heaviness in the air, a negative energy, and unexpressed rage. A young woman, who was obviously somewhat ashamed, admitted to me that she hated Pesach. Her memories were of a furious mother, whose mood affected the whole family and the entire pre-Pesach preparation process. Let’s be very clear. There is an enormous amount of work to be done to make a home ready for Pesach. It’s really not a one person job. This article is not about pointing fingers towards any one person. The intention is only to remind all of us of some well-known truths. Kids see everything, kids know everything, and are very sensitive to the emotional atmosphere of the home. If one TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225
parent is enraged at the other, it is very uncomfortable and can even be scary for the children. And the negative association between Pesach and anger/dread can have long lasting ramifications for the family, impacting future generations.
anticipation. Pesach needs to be viewed in the same way. Hard work, yes, smiles and laughter, yes, dread and anger, no. The weeks leading up to these days in which we celebrate Hashem’s love for us should be filled with music, and even spontaneous dancing at times.
It is so important for the parents to have a plan. They are planning a campaign with realistic assignments for each child, and a division of labor that makes sense for each parent. Perhaps most important is a parental attitude that must permeate the entire process, an attitude of excitement that Pesach is coming. Granted that there is a great deal of work and strategizing, and granted that this may be overwhelming at times. But so is planning a Bar Mitzvah, or a wedding. Stop and think about that for a second. Getting ready for a family Simcha can be very stressful, and exhausting, and yet there is an undercurrent of excitement, of joy. You can be completely depleted from all the hours of preparation, and still find yourself smiling in
A few final notes. It is so important that the mother feels supported by the other family members. First and foremost by the father, who must help as much as possible, and be very involved in managing and supervising the roles and jobs of the children. A happy, albeit tired, mother, warmth between parents, and a sense that there is a genuine enthusiasm in the air, go a long way to sending Pesach messages that bring security, closeness, love, and happiness to their children. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought.

Soup to Nuts
Written by Rabbi Dovid Cohen A service of the
Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered ANISE Q. I was surprised to see that the cRc shopping
guide lists a few varieties of anise (caraway, cumin, coriander, dill and fennel) as kitnios. Can you explain to me why that is the case? A. Rema 453:1 rules that anise and coriander are not kitnios. Some of the later Poskim (Taz 453:1 & 462:3, and Chok Yaakov 453:9) basically accept this psak but suggest that these spices be checked carefully to make sure none of the five grains are mixed into them. Other Poskim (Magen Avraham 453:3) take a stricter approach and hold that one should avoid these spices since it is so difficult to check whether grains are mixed into them. Rav Schwartz accepts the ruling of Mishnah Berurah 453:13 to follow the stricter approach. Accordingly, these spices are listed in our shopping guide as “kitnios” (although a purist could argue that even if they are forbidden the term “kitnios” does not apply to them). CANOLA AND SAFFLOWER OILS Q. Why is it that Canola oil is kitnios, but safflower oil is not? A. Many food items potentially qualify as kitnios, but we accept Chok Yaakov 453:9 and Iggeros Moshe (OC 3:63) that only those kitnios used for food and considered kitnios in previous generations (when the minhag was in place) are forbidden, but others are not. We do not have record of safflower oil being used for food purposes at the time of the minhag starting or subsequent generations, and therefore assume it is permitted. [If you have reason to believe otherwise, we would happily reconsider this position.] Others (particularly those from Eretz Yisroel) who do not accept Chok Yaakov may hold that safflower oil is forbidden. On the other hand, canola oil has quite a history of being used and treated as kitnios, as follows: Rapeseed oil was (and is still) used in Europe for hundreds of years (and was likely even used when the minhag was first beginning), and in a well-known 24 MARCH 2013
Chicago Rabbinical Council 2701 West Howard | 773-465-3900
teshuvah of the Maharsham I:183 regarding oil of kitnios he assumes that Raps, the German word for rapeseed, is kitnios. Thus, we see that rapeseed was treated as kitnios even in earlier times. Rapeseed oil was/is banned from food use in the USA due to high levels of erucic acid found in the oil (but was still used for lubrication). About 20 years ago, Canadian researchers bred a form of rapeseed that was had low levels of erucic acid, and that oil was approved for use in the USA. In order to differentiate this new breed of rapeseed oil, and to give it a name would be more acceptable to the public, they named the new breed “canola” which also showed off their civic pride for having created a “CANadian OiL”. Thus, canola oil is really a form of rapeseed oil (and is actually also known by the acronym LEAR – low erucic acid rapeseed), and since rapeseed is kitnios, the canola version is also forbidden on Pesach. MEALWORMS Q. Can I feed mealworms to my pet gecko on Pesach? A. Mealworms are a living creature which is not chametz and can be used as-is. However, they are commonly sold in a bed of wheat flakes or oatmeal, which are chametz and may not be owned or used on Pesach. [As an aside, some have had success feeding crickets to their geckos for Pesach.]

Moses was sitting in the Egyptian ghetto. Things were terrible. Pharaoh wouldn't even speak to him. The rest of the Israelites were mad at him and making the overseers even more irritable than usual, etc. He was about ready to give up. Suddenly a booming, sonorous voice spoke from above: "You, Moses, heed me ! I have good news, and bad news." Moses was staggered. The voice continued: "You, Moses, will lead the People of Israel from bondage. If Pharaoh refuses to release your bonds, I will smite Egypt with a rain of frogs" "You, Moses, will lead the People of Israel to the Promised Land. If Pharaoh blocks your way, I will smite Egypt with a plague of Locust." "You, Moses, will lead the People of Israel to freedom and safety. If Pharaoh's army pursues you, I will part the waters of the Red Sea to open your path to the Promised Land." Moses was stunned. He stammered, "That's.... that's fantastic. I can't believe it! --- But what's the bad news?" "You, Moses, must write the Environmental Impact Statement."
