CHILDREN OF HOPE By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

The “Sefira days”, the period of counting between Pesach and Shavuos, from the Exodus to G-dly Revelation and receiving the Torah, often evoke in me somewhat contradictory feelings. On the one hand, this is an intensely joyous time, replete with miracles, and incredible spiritual growth, leading up to a climax that continues to nourish us more than 3300 years later. On the other hand, we are taught that this period is a time of great mourning, the days during which the 24,000 students of Rebbi Akiva died, a devastating disaster not only because of the enormity of the loss of life, but also from the perspective of the great amount of Torah knowledge and wisdom that was lost. And yet, even as we ponder the tragedy, we can’t lose sight of an essential piece of the story. The Talmud tells us that Rebbi Akiva started over, teaching five students, and from these five great men the entire written Torah, the oral Torah, and all of its traditions were passed down to future generations intact. Stop and think about this for a moment. Rebbi Akiva’s life work was destroyed, and instead of giving up and giving in to feelings of despair, he rolled up his sleeves and began anew. Teaching Torah, guiding students, taking responsibility for Klal Yisrael, and giving us all a legacy of hope. I remember being in awe of my parents when I first realized what they had accom12 MAY 2013

plished in a few short years after the Holocaust. Within seven years of liberation from Auschwitz my father z”l had come to America, learned a new language, married my mother (a survivor of the Budapest ghetto,) started building a family and learned how to be a businessman. Both my parents lost so much, parents, siblings, many nieces and nephews, and yet rebuilt a family based on Torah values. When I was around 20, the age of my father when he was first taken to Auschwitz, I asked him how he could do it. How he could start over, work so hard, have children, not be scared, or in despair, or fall into a deep depression. He said something like “you do what you have to do and you trust in Hashem.” And then he smiled at me. In later years I realized that this is what it means to be a part of Klal Yisrael. There is always trust, there is always hope. We did it after the Churban, the destruction of our Holy Temple, and we did it after the Inquisition, and after the Crusades, and after the Holocaust, and after the Intifadas. We are the children of Rebbi Akiva. We are the children of hope. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought.

The Untouchables RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

A

unique aspect of the holiday of Shavuous struck me as I was explaining the customs of the holidays to some beginners. They began to review the various holiday laws with me. “OK,â€? began one young man. “So on Pesach you’ve got the matzoh, and the mitzvah of telling the story of the Exodus.â€? “Correct,â€? I nodded. “And on Sukkos you’ve got the lulav, esrog and eating the entire holiday in a sukkah right.â€? Again I gave an approving nod and smiled. The student continued. “And what special observance does the Torah tell us to do on Shavuos?â€? I hesitated. 6DFULĂ€FHV DVLGH ZKDW special mitzvah observance do we do to commemorate the receiving of the Torah? I was reluctant to respond with, “we stay up all night and learnâ€? or “we eat cheesecake at the holiday meal,â€? beautiful customs that are in no way comparable to the level of a Torah-ordained command. In fact, the Torah tells us in Parshas Re’eh how we celebrate the holiday. “You shall count seven weeks for yourselves‌Then you shall observe the holiday of Shavuos for Hashem. You shall rejoice before Hashem, your son your daughter, your servant your maidservant, the Levite in your cities, the proselyte, the orphan and the widow who are among youâ€? (Deuteronomy 116:13-15). Why is there no physical act in commemoration of the Yom Tov? There is no Torah-prescribed requirement to blow Shofar, read a special Torah portion (the reading of the 10 Commandments is Rabbinically ordained), or special ritual to commemorate the event. There is only all-inclusive rejoicing. Why is joy the only way to celebrate? And why is every type of citizen mentioned? Aren’t the poor and rich, widowed and orphaned included in every command? My grandfather, Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, of blessed memory, passed away 13 years ago. At the end of the shloshim period of mourning, his student, Rabbi Yitzchok Chinn, Rabbi of

16 MAY 2013

Gemilas Chesed Congregation of McKeesport, PennsylYania, eulogized him. He related the following story: Reb Yaakov spent his summers at in Camp Ohr Shraga in Ellenville, NY. One summer, a \RXQJ ER\ DVNHG 5HE <DDNRY D PRVW GLIĂ€FXOW question, “Rebbe,â€? he inquired, “where is my neshama (soul)?â€? Reb Yaakov turned to the boy and asked him, “Where is your arm?â€? The boy stuck out his arm. “Good!â€? said Reb Yaakov. “I want you to shake it.â€? The boy began to shake his arm up and down. Reb Yaakov smiled, “Good, now shake your other arm.â€? 7KH ER\ EHJDQ Ă DSSLQJ his arms. “Wonderful! Now show me your leg.â€? The boy lifted his foot. “Now shake it!â€? While Ă DSSLQJ KLV DUPV WKH ER\ VKRRN KLV OHJ 7KHQ Reb Yaakov smiled. “Now your other leg!â€? The boy began to jump and shake and rock and sway. And as he watched the youngster move with every part of his very essence, Reb Yaakov gave him a tremendous smile and exclaimed, “That is your neshama!â€? The only way to commemorate the receiving of the Torah is to celebrate the receipt of our nation’s soul. We cannot celebrate the soul with a physical commemoration. The soul of the nation celebrates by shaking every one of its parts: poor or rich, wealthy or poor, free or slave, son or daughter with unmitigated joy. The only way to capture the essence of our very being and our gratitude for the gift that infused us with boundless spirituality is through a rejoicing that permeates every part of the Jewish body; its arms, legs, and torso — The Torah. The observance is not relegated to eating an item, telling a story, hearing a shofar or sitting in a booth. Like the Torah we received, the celebration encompasses every aspect of our lives. And that is done thorough joyous simcha. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org.

Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered

Chicago Rabbinical Council 2701 West Howard | 773-465-3900

AEROSHOT Q. Do Aeroshots require hashgachah? A. Aeroshots is a powder-based mechanism for

inhaling caffeine and certain vitamins. A number of the ingredients are kosher-sensitive and therefore Aeroshots are not recommended unless they are certified kosher.

EGGS WITH OMEGA-3 Q. Is Omega-3 a kashrus concern in eggs? A. It is not. Whole/raw eggs sold as containing higher levels of Omega-3 are standard eggs which are laid by chickens that are fed a special diet that causes their eggs to have more Omega-3 than other eggs do. From a kashrus perspective it is irrelevant what the chickens are fed, and the eggs are kosher.

KOSHER ALERTS In May 2012, the certification on Trader Joe dark chocolate chips changed from OK-Pareve to OK-Dairy. At that point in time, the OK detailed the level of possible dairy contamination in chocolate chips, and some Rabbis mistakenly argued that perhaps chips were essentially “pareve”. Although that theoretical argument may have been possible at one time, it is clear that due to the change of company protocol, the status of the chips were to be treated as dairy. Accordingly, the cRc (Chicago Rabbinical Council) would like to remind the consumer of that the Trader Joe dark chocolate chips are OK-dairy. Although cRc certified during the majority of the year, certain packages of products manufactured by the following companies may have the cRc logo removed or covered during a period after Passover. Please be careful to check those products as the cRc does not certify those specific items unless the cRc is on each package. •Today's Temptations • Eli's Cheesecake • Biondillo's Please be aware that the Laurel Hill brand of Nacho Multigrain Tortilla Chips is incorrectly labeled with a plain cRc logo which would indicate it being pareve. If fact, the product is Dairy (Cholov Stam) as indicated on the ingredient panel.

JEWISH HUMOR THE CURE Moishe went to see his doctor because he was suffering from a miserable cold that wouldn’t clear up. His doctor prescribed him some pills, but they didn't help. On his next visit, the doctor gave Moishe an injection, but that didn't do any good, either. On his third visit, the doctor told Moishe to go home and take a hot bath. Then, as soon as he got out the bath, he must open all the windows. "But doctor," protested Moishe, "I'll get pneumonia." "I know," said his doctor, "I can cure pneumonia."
