tablet) or one that has no kosher- consult with their doctor and CHILDREN’S MEDICINES Q. Do children’s liquid and sensitive ingredients, then one Rabbi who will consider the chewable medicines have to be kosher? A. The answer to your question depends on the answers to three other questions: 1. Are liquid and chewable medicines considered edible? Liquid and chewable medicines taste good enough that a child can “get them down” but typically do not taste as good as something a person would consider eating if they weren’t ill. Some Poskim hold (based in part on Shulchan Aruch OC 442 as per Mishnah Berurah 442:20) that such items are not considered edible, and may be consumed regardless of whether the ingredients are kosher. According to this opinion, there is no need to investigate if a given medicine is kosher (or to consider the two other questions listed below), and a child may take any liquid or chewable medicine much in the way that adults may take any medication in tablet form. Others argue that nowadays these medicines are tasty enough to qualify as “edible”; therefore, they hold that if the ingredients are not kosher one may not give it to the child unless they can “correctly” answer the next two questions. 2. Are there any substitutes? If there is an alternate method of treating the illness which either uses an inedible medicine (e.g. a

may not use the non-kosher medicine. For example, one may not use liquid acetaminophen that contains non-kosher glycerin if there are other brands that bear a reputable hashgachah or do not contain any glycerin. If no alternative exists, then we must consider one last question before deciding if the medicine is acceptable. 3. Does the condition warrant taking a (possibly) non-kosher medicine? One may consume a nonkosher medicine if [there is no kosher alternative and] there is even the slightest chance that if one does not treat the illness it might endanger someone’s life. Almost every single case where antibiotics are prescribed for a child meets into this criteria, because if these illnesses are not treated they may lead to more serious complications which can be life threatening. Accordingly, such medicines may be consumed regardless of whether the medicine’s ingredients are kosher. If the medicine is merely used to relieve discomfort (e.g. a laxative) but will not treat or help in the treatment of a serious illness, then the medicine can only be consumed if one can first ascertain that the ingredients are kosher. We do however caution that before deciding to not give a specific medicine to a child, one should

different factors and render a decision that is specific to your situation. For updated information on specific over-the-counter medications, consult our medicine list at http://bit.ly/OTCList.

SIFTING FLOUR Q. 2. For those who have the minhag to sift flour, what electric sifters would be recommended? A. Nowadays, most flour is processed in a manner that removes all insects and even destroys just about all insect eggs, such that flour stored in cool, dry conditions will remain bug-free for 60 days or more. Accordingly, the halacha does not require one to sift their flour before use (unless they have reason to think it may have been stored in a damp and/or warm environment or for an extended amount of time). Nonetheless, there are some who do sift all of their flour so as to make sure that there is not even the slightest chance that they will consume a bug. For those who chose to follow this practice, it is recommended that they use an electric sifter whose screens are 60-70 mesh. [A lower mesh (i.e. <60) will not remove enough bugs and a higher mesh will make sifting too difficult.] Sifters that meet this standard are available online for approximately $60-70.

One Minute, Please Rabbi Dovid Hochberg

Inspiration strikes at the strangest times. The idea for this class came to me in the middle of a workout. You know the point when the clock says ten more minutes, and you feel like you can't last ten more seconds? You know you just have to keep going but ten minutes seems like an awfully long time. Your arms and legs ache, your chest is on fire...How do you do it? I'll tell you what I did. I told myself, "I can last for one more minute. One more minute and I will quit. I'll end early today, just hang in there for one more minute. Anyone can do one more minute." I pushed myself for one minute and at the end of that minute, I repeated my pep talk. "One more minute. It's easy, just one more minute and you can quit. No more games, just one minute. Come on, you can do one minute..." It worked and I completed another minute. Can you guess what I did next? Needless to say, the ten minutes passed by relatively easily. Why does this approach work? I set up a reasonable goal and promised myself a reward. "Only one more minute and then you can quit." Anyone can push oneself for one more minute and the promise of quitting sounded very exciting. The trick is to break formidable tasks into small pieces and focus on each piece, one at a time. Let me give you a powerful way to apply this idea. The Torah tells us that every day, the Yetzer Horah (Evil Inclination) tries to destroy a person and, without Hashem's help, he would be successful. We all know how strong and cunning the Yetzer Horah can be. Just take a look at your day. Did he try to convince you to do anything wrong today? Of course. He's very, very good at his job.

18 NOVEMBER 2011

Here's how you can beat him at his own game. Give in to him. That's right, surrender and indulge yourself. But indulge yourself after an hour. Tell yourself, "yes, I have a tremendous desire to do XYZ which is wrong. And I will do it. However, I will do it in an hour, not now." You will suddenly find it much easier to fight off the desire. After all, it's not like you aren't going to do XYZ...you are just going to wait an hour. It will feel as though a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. The hour will pass relatively easily. Now what happens when the hour is up? You know the drill: "Give me another twenty minutes and I will really do XYZ. I will completely indulge myself. In twenty minutes. Anyone can control himself for twenty minutes." After the twenty minutes are up, try to push further. You may not be able to control yourself, but look at what you accomplished. You were ready to do XYZ immediately. Now, you controlled yourself for an hour and twenty minutes. You should be very proud of yourself! This technique can be very difficult sometimes, depending on how strong your desire for XYZ is. Keep in mind, however, that every second you avoid doing an aveirah, you earn incredible reward. Reward you can't even imagine. Even if you give in at the end. Play around with this idea. Vary the times. You will discover that it becomes easier and easier to apply. Also, you will find that more and more frequently, events will take place that will prevent you from doing XYZ. This is called "Siatah D'shmaya", help from Heaven. It is a sign from Hashem that you are on your way. www.torah.org TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225
