The Day After I remember a couple who went so far as to buy an apartment near the Shul and they moved in every weekend. They managed for a while but even that was not sustainable. PARSHAS VAYAKHEL - PEKUDEI

Dire Precautions

M

ost building dedications are joyous events filled with upbeat speeches and predictions of growth and unyielding expansion. This week, Moshe recaps and reckons all the labor and material that went into the building of the Mishkan. He proudly announces that the contributions of gold, silver, copper and other materials, brought by the children of Israel exceeded the demands. Yet there is one aspect of his inaugural address that is strikingly somber. Instead of declaring that the Mishkan is here to stay and will be the forerunner of the Temple, he begins with a foreboding sense of doom. The portion of Pekudei (Reckoning) begins in Exodus 38:21 "These are the reckoning of the Mishkan -- the Mishkan of testimony. " The Medrash is bothered by Moshe's repetitive expression. Why does he repeat the words Mishkan -- Mishkan? He should have said, "These are the reckoning of the Mishkan of testimony."? The Medrash answers, homiletically, that the word Mishkan has a close relative in the word Mashkon -- collateral. Moshe was alluding, "to the two Temples that were taken back by G-d as collateral for the sins of Israel." Why on opening day, does Moshe allude to impending doom? Wouldn't such talk be totally demoralizing? What lesson is there for the Jewish People? In Poland there was a group of smugglers that employed many devious schemes to get goods across the Russian border without paying taxes. Yet, they were not successful until they realized that the border guards never bothered funeral processions. The smugglers decided to load their wares into coffins, and with all the grief and anguish that accompanies a fu-

neral they carried the contraband across the border. As this ritual became the norm, the fabricated anguish of a funeral procession was abandoned. One dark night, the group, laughing and kibitzing, came to the border. The guards, noticing an unusually buoyant atmosphere, demanded to open the casket. Upon seeing the illegal goods, the guards immediately arrested the group and brought them to police headquarters for interrogation. The leader of the smugglers stood before the commanding officer and broke down in tears. "Have mercy upon us. We all have families!" he wailed. With rage in his eyes the officer responded. "You fool! You are crying now! Had you cried as you reached the border, you surely would be laughing now. It is because you laughed then that you are crying now!" Moshe injected a sense of seriousness into the joy of dedication. He warns the Jewish people at this celebration that even the greatest gifts are not permanent. Even the Mishkan will not last forever. We must have that sense of seriousness and appreciation relating to everything we cherish. The prophet (Yoel 2:13) tells us, "rend your heart and not your clothing." The sages explain those words as saying "if you rend your hearts, you will not have to rend your clothing." Moshe, in a very subtle way, sends the same message. Even at a wedding, as the groom smashes the glass under the canopy, he reminds himself, his bride, and all those gathered of Moshe's inaugural message. Cherish what you have and guard it dearly. Because nothing left unguarded lasts forever. by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky www.torah.org Rabbi Aaron Tendler, Ner Yisroel Baltimore

Gog and Magog

info@communitylinks.info

W

hat worries me most in our terrible circumstance in these times – the Jewish people are in deep spiritual slumber. We've lost our sensitivity. It used to be that when an Israeli soldier was killed in a border clash, the entire country would cry out in mourning. Now, when there's a suicide bombing with fatalities, people barely bat an eyelash. It used to be that when a Jewish girl in Chicago married outside of her religion, every single Jew in the city would be shocked, as if it were his own daughter. Now, who cares about intermarriage? Who cares about our people dying off ? Where did our sensitivity go? Ah, that's the principle of Rebbe Nachman of Breslev – we're in exile, a spiritual exile. Nobody yells out to Hashem anymore. People have lost faith in prayer. Few people cling to emuna, real emuna, like our forefathers did. We're in danger of losing the battle; not so much the physical one, but the spiritual one. That's the threat of Gog and Magog – a nuclear cloud of agnosticism that destroys emuna. Our prayers, our powers of kedusha – the holiness of speech that should be giving us the reign over angels – is in exile. Rather than overcoming our enemies, the main enemy – the Evil Inclination, who Iran and Hamas are only minor physical manifestations – is threatening our very survival. I meet so many people whose trials and tribulations are making them crazy and causing them to lose faith. Rebbe Nachman of Breslev says this is the war, the test of emuna. The only way to win is to strengthen our emuna, and to believe that no matter what happens, Hashem does everything for our ultimate good – Hashem doesn't punish, He gives us difficulties to correct our soul. Whenever we are faced with a difficulty in life, we should accept it with emuna, and say: “Hashem, You are righteous and just in everything You do to me – everything that happens in life comes from you! But Hashem, have mercy on me, even though I don't deserve a thing…” Once we accept Hashem's justice, we can ask for mercy. But, we have to hold on strong with emuna. We must beg Hashem to strengthen our faith. Hashem wants to strengthen our emuna, but emuna is a treasure that Hashem doesn’t give out lightly. We have to work hard for it. Once we do, we are rescued! Developing Emuna and our own personal relationship with Hashem is our entire purpose on earth, for more than

anything, Hashem wants us to have emuna. Hashem want us to shine His countenance on us. But, the more the Evil Inclination controls a person, makes him or her transgress and become slave to all types of bodily pursuits and physical desires, emuna is weakened. When emuna is weakened, a person's spiritual vessel – the soul – can't contain the Divine light. So, Hashem turns away, otherwise He'd destroy the person, since a 40-watt bulb can't handle 2000 watts of direct current. When Hashem turns away, troubles can now enter a person's life, for in spirituality, there's no void: when Hashem's light leaves, the Evil Inclination's darkness fills the void. So, as our sages teach, that there are no tribulations without prior transgression. A person's own wrongdoing, his or her own lack of emuna, cause all the suffering! If a lack of emuna causes suffering, then the reinforcement of emuna invokes a salvation. Do you have a problem? Who doesn’t? Turn to Hashem, cry out for His help – talk to Him, plead with Him, beg Him! Just as a tzaddik's speech reigns over angels, Hashem allows those people with emuna to literally ask for whatever they want. Hashem saves those who trust Him completely from hopeless situations that defy any natural solutions – I can tell stories about this all day long. Our tribulations are all tribulations of emuna. Rebbe Nachman of Breslev saw that this would be the war of the generation before Moshiach. That’s right, the Rebbe saw each of us and our grueling challenges in life – the financial problems, marital, child education, terror, military service, war – the Rebbe saw everything that each of us would be faced with. The War of Gog and Magog is the war against our emuna – our faith – and not against Iran's nuclear missiles of the Hamas suicide bombers. Rather than planning a dangerous mission against Iran that could erupt into a World War III, our people and country would be much better off just crying out for Hashem. One of the worst manifestations of Gog and Magog is drugs and narcotics, an international epidemic that has affected our people around the world. Rather than meeting the challenges of our times with emuna, because true emuna neutralizes stress, anxiety, depression, and all other negative emotions – people prefer to drug themselves, to put themselves in a stupor. I'm not talking about illicit and illegal drugs only, I also mean the drugs that psychiatrists prescribe (Continued on page 18)

– drugs destroy emuna. Emuna is the power to cope, the more emuna, the more one is connected to Hashem, the more one can cope. Rather than coping, the victims of Gog and Magog – those who are weak on emuna - run to drugs. Gog and Magog is the battle about who will hold on with emuna. Rebbe Nachman said in his discourse #35 that this would be the final war, and that few would hold on. He tells a story that the souls all went before the Heavenly throne and complained, "Hashem, what's going to be the end to our never-ending series of reincarnations? We foul up in one reincarnation, and who says we'll do any better in the next one? Many of us never achieve a place of eternal rest. Hashem, this is unbearable!" Rebbe Nachman explains that Hashem hears them out, and then gives his heavenly verdict, "OK, I won't send you on limitless reincarnations any more. Would you like a final soul correction? Good – I'll send you to the last generation before Moshiach – your tests of faith will be excruciating.

18

March 13 - March 27

Few of you will succeed. The entire world will be against you and many of you will be destroyed, dying a spiritual death. BUT, those of you who hold on tight with emuna, despite the bombardment of everything around you that tries to convince you otherwise, despite grueling tribulations, with the whole world against you, you shall receive your final soul correction! You shall achieve eternal bliss as your reward, and will never have to reincarnate again! Just hold on tight to your emuna!" The souls are ready to accept any punishment, but not another reincarnation. Rebbe Nachman is talking about us! Our generation! This is the war of Gog and Magog that the prophets said so few people will be saved. The souls are willing to accept any punishment, as long as they don’t have to return to this lowly world for another reincarnation. Courtesy of breslovisrael:breslov.co.il By: Rabbi Shalom Arush

LINK Kollel Tribute Dinner Since it’s inception in 2002, the LINK Kollel has had a profound impact on thousands of lives and has made an indelible impression on the landscape of Los Angeles Jewry through its engaging explorations of Torah Judaism for all backgrounds. LINK is the founder of the renowned TLC (Torah Learning for Collegiates) programs with weekly learning opportunities for women 18-25 at all levels of observance. With a theme of “Transforming Lives Through Torah”, the evening is dedicated to honoring Rabbi Leib Keleman and his trailblazing spiritual self-help program known as the Mussar Vaad (which has recently become under the LINK programming umbrella). Rabbi Kelemen, a Professor of Education at Neve Yerushalayim College of Jewish Studies for Women in Jerusalem, will be the recipient of the Marbitz Torah Award. Mr. Michael Naim will receive the Community Leadership Award. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Naim founded and edited the English/Farsi magazine “Unity” to bring a greater understanding of classical Torah Judaism to the Persian community of L.A. The recipient of the Dedication to Torah Award will be Dr. Robert Katz. He served with distinction as a radiologist and nuclear medicine physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center until 1994, when a mishap during routine surgery left him in a coma for 11 days. When he recovered, he was forced to retire from medicine and decided instead to embark on a “career” in Torah study. For more information please call Gila at 310-470-5465 or email link@linkla.org.

A Special Message from Rabbi Leib Kelemen: Dear Friends, It was no accident that the groundbreaking meeting that launched the Mussar Vaad concept was first presented in the LA community at the closing session of a LINK Shabbaton in the spring of 2005. Many of the Vaad's participants got their spiritual start and/or followup learning at LINK and the Westwood Kehilla. And, of course, the first, flagship Vaad began, and continues to meet, at LINK/Westwood Kehilla. Like the Vaad, LINK is committed to the sophisticated exploration of the Torah. This is exemplified both in the intensive Kollel learning that takes place each day, as well as the manifold shiurim and chavrusas that the LINK scholars take the lead in teaching. And, similar to the Vaad, the sheer range of participants in LINK's inreach and outreach offerings is both staggering and inspiring. From Persian college students to Ashkenazi octogenarians, from trained Rabbis to unlettered young singles, from the West Valley to Orange County, LINK is slowly but surely changing the spiritual landscape of LA. The LINK Kollel members learn more than five hours every day, and still manage to serve as chevrusas for more than 60 members of the larger community. Every week they teach in more than 20 LINK programs, which affect hundreds. No Jew interested in learning Torah is ever turned away. Although I have never been solicited by LINK for funds, I am proud to be counted among the ranks of their supporters. I feel privileged to have found a place where I know my tzedaka funds are being spent in the best of all possible ways – spreading Torah and caring for Klal Yisroel. I am proud to announce that the Mussar Vaadim in LA have now become part of the LINK network of programs. It is our honor to be under the same umbrella as so many outstanding learning initiatives that the Kollel has spawned. I must publicly thank Rav Brander for all he and LINK have done for me, for my students, and for the Los Angeles Jewish community. There is nothing we could do to adequately repay him for his kindness, and for the inspiring example he sets. With admiration and affection, Leib Kelemen

Cleaning for Passover with Young Children 28

In preparation for the Passover holiday, an important task we undertake is the cleaning of our homes of all leaven products all of which are, according to Torah law, forbidden from being in our possession. We do this in commemoration of the unleavened Matzot the Jewish nation baked prior to leaving Egypt.

I

think if there is anything more nerve wracking than cleaning for Passover, it is cleaning for Passover with small children. I mean, they are walking pieces of leaven. Somehow they manage to bring pieces of pretzels, cookies, crackers and anything else not allowed during Passover into virtually any space you never thought they could possibly enter. I can't think of any place that has ever been totally kid-free There is the concept with Passover cleaning that if you are sure nothing leavened entered a certain room or area during the year, then there is no need to clean it. Well, maybe it is just in my house, but with four kids, I can't think of any place that has ever been totally kid-free. I remember one year laughing and saying that at least I don't need to clean the ceiling, only to look up and notice that somehow, someway (my children are quite talented) a piece of some food was attached to the very ceiling above my head. Now, while I am not trying to stress you out, the reality is that with children who are prone to eating throughout the house (and I don't care what kind of rules you have… If you have a two year old, that child has snuck some food form in a little fist up to his or her room before), Passover cleaning requires some preplanning. And even though I am the first to claim that being organized and neat is not my forte, I have discovered some amazing tips for making Passover cleaning that much more bearable. Now there are two ways of cleaning for Passover. One is the approach that it might as well coincide with spring cleaning and what better time to sort through and reorganize the entire home. If that is your approach, this article is not for you. But, as a side note, if you do plan to spring-clean, this is a great time to sort though and give away clothing, toys and other things that you are no longer using. Rule of thumb should be that if you or your children haven't worn certain things in a year (and there is no immediate sibling to pass down to) or the kids haven't played with it in some time and there is no sentimental value, give it away! Remember, your junk is another's treasure… Returning to the topic at hand, these tips can be enormously helpful for those who follow the perspective that dirt is not chametz! I am on a mission for anything leavened: nothing more, nothing less. And along with that, comes the lovely ability to "sell" places or rooms that are not being used for Passover. Essentially what this means is that come the week of Passover, at least half of my house cannot be entered, touched or used in any way, as it is where everything that has not been cleaned has been stored. (And no, children can't be "sold" in this process…) So when it comes to cleaning and kids (I know, an oxymoron), how is this done? Let them be a part of it and add great incentives Being that Passover is still a few weeks away, I am only going to deal with the kid's rooms and toys. Now depending on the age of the kids, there is no reason why they can't help with cleaning their own things and organizing. If they are old enough to, great. Let them be a part of it and add great incentives as well. Here are the things to look out for: First and foremost, check backpacks, bags and any thing that may have gone to school with them. Whatever they won't need for Passover, don't worry about. You can "sell" it. Whatever you will need, clean now and put away out of reach. Whatever they are still using that you will also need during Passover week, keep by the front door and not in their bedrooms (such as a bag that will be used during Passover). Once you have cleaned their rooms, have them take off their shoes when they come home and leave them by the front door. There is nothing more frustrating than tracking crumbs through a room that has already been cleaned. Also, a few weeks before Passover, start making all snacks and lunches with Passover friendly products. For example: Rice Cakes, Bamba/peanut butter snacks macaroons, marshmallows, or the endless array of Passover snacks and cookies

[As a note, these products are not used by everyone on Passover itself, but being that they are not leaven, they are optimal choices for before the holiday] … Remember to stay away from crumbly food that will inevitably stick to clothes. Clothes: It is a custom to wear new clothing Go through your kids' closets and see if they need anything new for Passover. It is a custom to wear new clothing and this makes life a lot easier. Take them shopping early, pick out a few things, and set them aside. I find this is a great time to buy a new pair of shoes. We keep them on the side and they wear them starting on Passover. Additionally, pull out of their closets and drawers a few other outfits that they can get by without for a few weeks, make sure they are clean, and put them aside for Passover as well. Just remember with something like a winter coat, make sure to clean or wash it right before as it is very likely to have crumbs in the pockets. Back to the idea of selling, try to designate only one closet that will be a Passover closet. This is the one you will really need to go through and clean. Put in all the clothes that are being saved for Passover (for the entire family) and then keep it closed, tape it shut or whatever you need to do so kids don't enter. Then keep all the other clothes and things in the other closets. When Passover comes, tape those shut, consider them "sold" and voila…

Marketplace

Toys: Similar idea to the above. Go through the kids' toys and pick out all the easy to clean toys. These are toys that can be safely thrown in the washing machine (more applicable to baby toys, stuffed animals, etc.) or thrown in the bathtub (great for plastic toys, etc.) Have you kids join you, fill the bathtub with soapy water, and soak all washable toys. When the toys that have been washed in either the tub or washer are dried, throw them in a garbage bag, tie it closed, and put it in the Passover closet. Let them play with the rest of their toys until Passover. Before Passover arrives, take all of those hard to clean toys, and store them in whatever room/rooms or closets that are being "sold". You can then pull out the cleaned toys you had set aside previously. (It certainly doesn't hurt to buy each kid a new toy in honor Passover as well…) Lic# 813778

In summary, the main idea is that a few weeks before Passover, start separating the clothes and toys that will be set aside, so that you need not worry as Passover get closer that their favorite shirt or doll or toy is filled with crumbs and impossible to deal with. Hopefully this has been helpful or at least a start with the Passover cleaning. And when all else fails, do what we always do… spend Passover in someone else's house! I

light my Shabbat candles, but it doesn't help one bit. A 200-pound barbell is still balanced across my shoulders.

Relative to many others, we have only been scratched and not crushed by the stock market crash and current economic crisis. Thank G-d, my husband still has a job, we still have food on the table, we still have a comfortable place to live. But the stock market crash has brought on a sense of nagging, no… make that haunting anxiety about our ability to meet our basic needs in the long-term. And now, even on Shabbat Kodesh, the day when all my mundane worries would fall away. My kids open their bags of potato chips and button up their sweaters in preparation for our traditional Friday night walk while my husband is in shul. I am more in a lie on the sofa and sulk mood than a go on a walk mood, but I don't see any way around it. I wipe my 3-year-old's nose, replace my one-year-old's discarded shoe, bounce the double stroller down the stairs, and we are off into the Jerusalem night. When we are headed back towards home, I smell the smoke. Burning trash? Burning forests? Burning wood in a fireplace? I consider each possibility and then my mind steps back in time, falls into a deep sleep and my soul arises, circling around and sniffing at the air. In a moment, my soul has slipped out of my body like Peter Pan out of the Darlings' nursery window. A memory has been stirred loose and I am flying over white beaches and black oceans and vast potato fields, until I arrive at a Friday night in Brunswick, Maine 17 years ago.

It is snowing so heavily, I feel as though I am stuck inside the glass ball I kept on my childhood dresser until it shattered one day. Most of my classmates are getting drunk at parties and yelling at each other over blasting Led Zeppelin and Madonna. A few dozen students are watching "Casablanca" in the auditorium of the foreign languages building. The library is the exclusive territory of exchange students and Classic majors. As I hear the snow crunch under my feet, I am very depressed about something. An unrequited crush? A failed exam? During those years, life often felt meaningless, but this night is different. Tonight, the feeling of meaninglessness is no longer vague, like a mild toothache that comes and goes over a period of months until you call your dentist one day in a panic. Tonight the meaninglessness screams at me out of the black void of the universe like a long overdue root canal. I double knot my olive-green duck boots, zipper up my pink LL Bean coat, and head away from the bright lights and shaking frat houses of the campus. I am a 19-year-old Odysseus setting off through the thick pine forest behind the gym, in search of the Meaning of Life. At first, I just stare around me at the beauty of it all. The dime-sized snowflakes whizzing around me and settling on the 3-story pine trees in the dark night. But as the snow piles up on the pine branches, a layer of fear gathers on my heart. If a wild dog found me, or a psychopathic killer, there would be no one to protect me, I realize. If I sprained my ankle and could not get up, there would be absolutely no one to hear my screams for help. It would take days, maybe weeks, for someone to discover me out here underneath the snow in the thick woods. Maybe not until the spring came.

I shiver. I forgot to wear gloves, and I ball up my bare hands and stuff them, pink and frozen, as far as they will go inside my pockets. "I am not afraid, I am not afraid," I lie over and over to myself under my breath. But I do not head back to the safety of my dorm room. I know this is a journey I must continue until its end. I walk further and further. I reach the road and then an unfamiliar bridge. I hear the furious rush of the river below; it is almost licking at my feet, like the flames of Hell in a medieval tapestry. "I am not afraid. I am not afraid." But I feel my heartbeat pulsing hot and quick behind my eyes. At the end of the bridge, I discover a pitch black path, and a cluster of small houses in the distance. This is not a wealthy area; probably workers from the college maintenance crew or the cafeteria staff live here. I come to a small white house, and from the path I can see inside the window. I see a tea-colored table lamp, a painting of flowers on the wall, and a man and a woman and a baby next to their fireplace. Standing there, I feel like an alien who has never seen a human family in my whole life. I have crossed the river and entered a fairy tale, and this is the gingerbread house surrounded by gumdrops and candy canes. I see the fireplace's white smoke rise from their chimney, and I smell the sweet smoke. I stand there for minutes. Or maybe hours. I take out my key and open the door to my dorm room. My roommate and best friend is with her boyfriend, as usual. Tears stream down my cheeks. I am a failed Odysseus. Whatever universal truth or meaning or purpose I was seeking on this journey, I did not discover it. I am alone in my room. And alone in the Universe. But as I fall asleep, I cross the furious river or memory once again, and walk down the pitch-black path to its very end. My husband has returned from synagogue before me, and he opens the door. "Let's get started," he says, "the chicken soup smells amazing." I sit with my family around the table, the Shabbat candles casting flickering shadows on our living room wall. As we sing Shalom Alechem, I hold my 10-year-old daughter's hand, and I realize that the barbell on my shoulders has evaporated. I feel happy for the first time in days. I look to the window, and my heart jumpstarts when I see a familiar young girl with her hands cupped against the glass, watching us.

I meet my eyes and shiver. I turn back to my family, and I thank God for all the things I have not lost in the past few months. My family. My faith. My place. I tighten my grip around my daughter's hand, and don't let go even when we all stand for Kiddush. I

n what is probably the most anti-climactic event in Jewish history, the nation that was about to receive the Torah from Moshe turns away from the will of Hashem. After 40 days they begin to worry that Moshe will never return and they panic. They create a new leader for themselves -- The Golden Calf..

The Torah describes the scene in Exodus 32:6: "The people offered (the calf) peace offerings and they sat down to eat and drink and they got up to revel." Hashem immediately commands Moshe to descend Mount Sinai in order to admonish his corrupt nation. As Moshe comes down the mountain he hears tumultuous shouts emanating from the people who were celebrating their new found deity. His student, Yehoshua, also hears the sounds and declares (Exodus 32:17) "the sound of battle is in the camp." Moshe listens and amends the theory. He tells Yehoshua, " It is not the sound of victory, nor the sound of defeat: I hear the sound of distress." When Moshe sees the Golden Calf he breaks the Tablets and restores order, sanity, and the belief in Hashem. What is strange about the episode is the contrast of the sounds made and the sounds heard. If the Jewish People reveled and celebrated then why did Yehoshua hear sounds of war and how did Moshe hear sounds of distress? They should both have heard the sound of celebration and festivity. Rav Chaim of Sanz had a custom: he would test the local children on a monthly basis. The children would recite orally from the Mishnah or Talmud and Rav Chaim would reward them generously with sweets and money. Once a group of secular Jews decided to dupe Rav Chaim. They taught a Talmudic selection to a gentile child and reviewed it with him until he knew it perfectly. They dressed him like a Chasidic child and had him stand in line with all the other children to be tested. The rabbi listened to the young boy intently. The other children were puzzled: they did not remember this boy from their cheder, yet they were amazed at the remarkable fluency he displayed in reciting his piece. Rav Chaim was not impressed at all. He turned to the young man and said, "please tell your father that there are better ways to earn a few coins!" With that he dismissed the child. The secularists were shocked. "How did the Rabbi know?" Their curiosity forced them to approached Rav Chaim. Rav Chaim smiled as he answered them. "There are two ways to say the Gemorah. One is filled with spirituality. The child's body is swaying and filled with the emotion of Torah. The other is just repetitive rote. This young man lacked the fire and the true joy that the Jewish children have when learning Torah. I knew he was not one of ours." The Jews got up to revel around the golden calf. Moshe and Yehoshua however knew the difference between true joy -- simcha -- and confusion. The Jews revel were in essence distressed but it was masked with drinks and noise makers. True joy is coupled with a certainty and a sense of direction; something lacking for those Jews celebrating the idol. The Jews may have gotten up to celebrate, but it was no celebration. It may have looked like a party to the untrained eye, but Moshe knew the true sound of joy. It did not exist with the Golden Calf. True joy is the harmony of spirituality and contentment. Superficial sounds of euphoria and celebration are heard by those with true insight as sounds of battle and distress. by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky www.torah.org Rabbi Aaron Tendler, Ner Yisroel Baltimore

Editor’s note: Many people seek advice on preparing for the possibility of war and terrorism, Heaven forbid, in light of daily threats from Iran, Hizbolla, the Hamas, and others. The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s encouraging words from seventeen years ago are just what we need to hear today. The hashkafa, or outlook, of the true tzaddikim all take us to the same place, namely, to the world of emuna where we know that Hashem not only does everything, but everything he does is for the very best.

A

t a time when the eyes of the world are anxiously focused on the exploits of 'the king of Babylon,' the message that these talks consistently radiate is -- quiet optimism. This message does not defy reality: it does not for a moment advocate that natural responses to the current situation should be abandoned. At the same time, however, we ought to take to heart the advice of the Tzemach Tzedek: 'Think good, and the outcome will be good.' For, as the above-mentioned passage from Yalkut Shimoni reassures us, when 'the entire world will panic and will be stricken with consternation,' our people can remain at ease, confident in the Creator's promise that 'Whatever I have done, I have done only for your sake. Why are you afraid? Have no fear: the time for your redemption has arrived!' In a time of personal crisis, the Tzemach Tzedek once advised one of his followers, 'Think good and the outcome will be good.' The optimism this directive encourages is not euphoric. Instead, it is based on the firm belief that everything which transpires in the world is guided by G-d's Providence and 'Everything the Merciful One does is intended for the good.' When a person internalizes this belief, his life is suffused with bitachon (confident trust) and he is able to carry out productive and fruitful activities without being inhibited by worry or fear. Bitachon is the very opposite of escapism. It does not mean that a person should believe that because G-d's mercies are infinite, He will save him without any effort on his part, or that whether his conduct is worthy or unworthy, he will prosper. Instead, it requires a person to act maturely within the world and employ all the natural means at his disposal. Nevertheless, he should realize that these efforts can never, in and of themselves, promise success. Therefore, one must 'cast your burden on G-d,' confident that 'He will sustain you.' When a person has total dependence on G-d, he has the confidence to face trials and challenges. He does not shirk his responsibilities or try to avoid difficulties. When confronting them, however, he does not place his trust in his own efforts, but in G-d. He relies on Him alone, fully confident that G-d will bring him open and revealed good. This approach of total and complete reliance is sufficient in itself to evoke positive Divine influence. In response to a person's efforts to arouse his trust and confidence in G-d, G-d creates situations which allow him to use his energies in positive and beneficial ways. If the above applies in the individual sphere, it is surely relevant when a major portion of the Jewish nation, millions of Jewish men, women, and children, are involved...Despite all the trials to which our people have been subjected in the present exile, 'even the least worthy member of our people possesses as many mitzvot as a pomegranate possesses seeds.' Indeed, 'Your people are all righteous..., They are the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, in which I take pride.' G-d takes great pride in every Jew. There is no way our mortal wisdom can comprehend the immense merit every Jew possesses. This is what is required of us at present -- to emphasize the virtues of every Jew, to spread love and unity among the Jewish people, and to encourage the observance of the Torah and its mitzvot in our everyday lives. As the Rambam writes, 'with one mitzvah, one can tip his personal balance and that of the entire world to the side of merit and bring deliverance and salvation.' These activities will no doubt call down G-d's benevolence. We say in our prayers, 'Bless us, our Father, all of us as one.' The Alter Rebbe explains that when we are 'as one,' united by bonds of unity, we are worthy of blessing -- including the ultimate blessing, the coming of Mashiach. (An adaptation of statements of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, at public addresses (Shabbos Parshas Vayechi and Shabbos Parshas Shmos) in Likkutei Sichos Parshas Shmos, 5751 (1991) , reprinted with kind permission of Rabbi Yitzchak Turner of www.sichosinenglish.org)

S

ome years ago, the United Nations held the International Summit on Sustainable Development, here in Johannesburg. The Summit was a great success. One wonders, though, whether all the wonderful decisions and resolutions that were adopted were ever implemented. In other words, were they themselves sustainable? Good ideas and worthwhile projects are suggested regularly. The question is, do they get off the drawing board? And if they do, how long do they last? What degree of permanence do they enjoy? Moses gathered the assembly of the Children of Israel -- these are the opening words of the Parshah Vayakhel. Rashi tells us that this day of assembly was the day after Yom Kippur. Moses came down from Mount Sinai on Yom Kippur bearing the message of G-d's forgiveness for the sin of the Golden Calf. The next day, he gathered the people and commanded them to build the Sanctuary. Why is it important to know that this was the day after Yom Kippur? Perhaps it is because while on Yom Kippur everyone is holy, the challenge is to be holy after Yom Kippur. It is relatively easy to be holy on the holiest day of the year. The test of faith is to maintain our good behavior in the days and weeks following the awesome, sacred experience. Will we still be inspired or will our enthusiasm have waned straight after Neilah? How many Synagogues are filled to capacity on Yom Kippur and struggle for a minyan the next morning? A son says kaddish for his father or mother faithfully -- for the week of Shiva. And then? Or perhaps he comes to Shul regularly and recites kaddish for the full 11 months. And the next day he's gone. And it's not only about Shul, it's about life. What happens after the honeymoon? Or the first anniversary? Do we have the commitment and the staying power to be in for the long haul? Many people get inspired at one time or another. Over the years, I've seen hundreds of men and women go through a phase of dedicated Jewish living only to see them fall back on old habits and lifestyles. And it wasn't because their commitment faltered, but because they did not implement a sustainable program for that commitment to thrive. Take Shabbat. A person experiences a real sense of Shabbat for the very first time in his or her life. Then again, and again, until they decide that they really want this for themselves. It's so serene, so spiritual, and so special. So they commit to keeping Shabbat. They start walking to Shul every Saturday. There's only one problem. They live three miles from the Shul that inspired them. O.K., it's not impossible to walk three miles; lots of people do it every day to keep in shape. So, as long as they are still on a spiritual high it works, but the reality is that it is simply not sustainable. If they don't move closer to their favorite Shul, something will snap. I remember a couple who went so far as to buy an apartment near the Shul and they moved in every weekend. They managed for a while but even that was not sustainable. It became a bothersome schlep to have to move out every Friday and move back every Saturday night. It just didn't last. So this is a call not only to maintain the momentum of our spiritual inspiration but to take practical steps to do so. To succeed in the long term, we must have a pragmatic plan; a realistic, workable, achievable program to see us through to the end. Otherwise, G-d forbid, our fervent feelings of the moment may turn out a flash in the pan. Let us be inspired enough to make sure our inspiration lasts. • By Yossy Goldman Rabbi Yossy Goldman is Senior Rabbi of the Sydenham Highlands North Shul since 1986, and Chairman of the South African Rabbinical Association.

(Note: This is another in a series of tributes to those in the Los Angeles Jewish Community who are making a unique contribution. Previous articles have focused on Dalit Kimhi, the woman who created the Hanukah stamp; Aaron Friedman, the former body guard for Ben Gurion; and others. There is much we can learn from the examples of these exemplary individuals.)

any have described Israel as World Jewry’s blessing. Since the creation of the State of Israel, Jews throughout the world have shown pride in having our own homeland and place of refuge. We have seen Israel succeed in so many ways. We have not only been strengthened by the country, we have been strengthened by the pioneering spirit of the people. We also have been strengthened by some very special individuals. Shalom Ashkenazi is one who has made a lasting contribution. Now, as I write this, I can envision many of you saying, “Shalom Ashkenazi?” If you have not had the pleasure to meet this uniquely special leader, let me provide some introduction. Shalom and his wife Liat serve as the Shlichim, “messengers/representatives of Israel” for West Coast Bnei Akiva. To some of you, that still does not ring a bell. Many organizations have a Shaliach from Israel, a man, woman,

46

or couple, who come for a couple of years to live in the United States and provide a “touch of Israel” right here. Usually, Shlichim come and go. They become well loved within their own organization, but seldom have an impact beyond their group. As many of you know, Bnei Akiva is the international youth movement of the Religious Zionists. For many decades, about 150 youth in Los Angeles regularly have donned the white shirt with blue trim uniform of Bnei Akiva for two Saturday afternoons monthly and other events on behalf of Israel. Many of today’s young participants are the children of past Bnei Akiva participants. Up until recently, little has changed with Bnei Akiva as late on Shabbat afternoon, the Bnei Akiva Snif (chapter) will gather typically at a sponsoring synagogue with boys’ activities and girls’ activities, culminating in a special rousing Havdalah ceremony to end the Shabbat. Things have been very much the same for years. This is a very worthwhile program where children learn to love both Israel and Judaism. Shalom Ashkenazi came to Los Angeles a couple of years ago. He brought vision and creativity. Things would not be the same. Shalom realized that to have a presence in the community,

an organization must be official. He brought about incorporation with 501-C-3 IRS charitable status. The new status would enable the organization to better seek grant money to expand its efforts on behalf of the children and Israel. There would be a new and enlarged impact of what had been a fairly small, but good program. With chapters in Beverlywood, Beverly-La Brea, and Valley Village, he realized that those three places do not represent the totality of Jews in Los Angeles. Where were the children of the West Valley? Under Shalom’s guidance, a new Snif was created in Tarzana. This Snif may be the largest group in the community with about 30 high school student leaders and 50 or more elementary school and middle school children. This is not the end as Shalom believes in including all. Look for possible other chapters to the north and west. Next, Shalom responded to questions that for some reason had not before been asked in Los Angeles. Can’t children of Israelis join a Zionist group like Bnei Akiva? Shouldn’t children of all factions of the community join together to strengthen love of Israel? As part of his geographical expansion of Bnei Akiva, he also sought out Israeli families living in Los Angeles to become active. Scores of Israeli families responded. They and their children have joined with those previously attracted to Bnei Akiva to create a larger organization unified by commitment to Israel. Bnei Akiva of Los Angeles is a local group. That has not stopped Shalom from expanding the impact of the local organization both locally and nationally, and even internationally. Locally, Shalom had bus loads full of children and families at the recent flag raising at the Israeli Embassy. Bnei Akiva was also the backbone of rallies on behalf of Israel during the recent war in Gaza. Nationally, dozens of teens from Los Angeles joined this past June with Jews from throughout the United States and Canada in the annual Israel Day Parade in New York. Internationally, virtually 100% of those local Bnei Akiva students graduating from area high schools now spend their first year of college in Israel. There has been a dramatic increase in participation among those students going into the eleventh grade in spending the summer in Israel with Bnei Akiva. And there has been renewed interest in making Aliyah to Israel among college students and young adults who have been part of Bnei Akiva. All these accomplishments would be great. It would be a tribute for any visitor to the local area make such an impact in only two years. But as the late Paul Harvey said, “Now for the rest of the story.” Shalom does not do, so much as inspire and train young leaders. He is not there to entertain the children and teens. He uniquely is capable of inspiring and imparting skills. He uses the basic Bnei Akiva approach that the older high school kids lead the younger elementary/middle school children in activities. (You would be surprised as to how many of today’s teens welcome the leadership opportunity presented.) Under Shalom’s leadership, hundreds of high school student leaders now know how to lead, how to host activities for younger students, and they have learned about Israel past and present. With his young leaders, Shalom has helped to stage major educational events for the community as well as for local high schools. Shalom recently brought from Israel both the widow of Ehud Goldwasser, a soldier who had been captured by Hezbollah and taken into Lebanon, and the former leader of those captured at Entebbe in the 1976 hijacking for a program on the Jewish value of freeing captives. Imagine having thousands of high school students and adults exposed to the real life experiences of these world famous people. Shalom was brought to Los Angeles to lead a small group, Bnei Akiva. He did this while impacting many thousands, even those who have no idea of just who Shalom Ashkenazy is. Shalom continues to make a difference. I am a proud parent of a teenager who now leads dozens of younger children with a capability and strength that is appreciated by the parents of all of the children and teens she leads. Like hundreds of other parents in the Los Angeles Jewish Community, our lives have been changed and enhanced by Shalom. Shalom Ashkenazi came to L.A. for a limited time of two years to help guide a small local organization. He ended up changing an entire community of hundreds of thousands. All I can say is Wow! And thank you. Robert J. Rome, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in clinical practice in Encino, California. He can be reached at RJRome@aol.com.

FISH GRILL REVIEW There were so many times I would walk by this clearly Kosher joint and wonder what it was about. So I decided to try it and see! Once I did decide to go in I have never been able to stop. I have been going here for over six years now and I have been satisfied with nearly every experience. Fortunately I live a couple of blocks away because they don't deliver, so often times I am picking up. Here is what this restaurant has going for them. Simple food, incredibly fresh fish, wood burning grill (nice mesquite flavor), and fast service. What I like best: • Grilled Fish, salmon, trout, white fish, sea bass, and ahi. All are great I like to make them cajun style (adds a nice spicy flavor). • Grilled Fish Tacos - my personal favorite, good cabbage, sauce and corn tortilla. Really fresh tasting and drips with flavor.

53

March 13 - March 27

• Angel hair pasta with garlic tomatoes and herbs. Straight forward but simple with good flavor. You can add fish if you like. I personally love the angel hair pasta paired with salmon. • Again - Fish Tacos; NEVER fail. Sides - Bake potato, love the cole slaw - just right not to liquidy or creamy, Israeli salad - chunky tomatoes and cucumbers in a lemon vinegarette, nice medley. Overall, I have been pleased with my multitude of experiences at the Fish Grill. Consistency is a hard quality to maintain and I think they mastered the simplicty of their menu with the core focus being on Fresh Fish! My recommendation; try it and get hooked. The Fish Grill has 4 different locations: 7226 Beverly Blvd. LA, 90036 (323) 930-1303 12013 Wilshire Blvd. LA, 90025 (310) 479-1800 9618 W.
