WHAT IS CHANUKA?
By Rabbi Elisha Greenbaum
F
or most people the question will conjure up a description of their Hebrew School Chanuka pageant where a silver-foil clad Yehuda Maccabee successfully routed an ill-assorted bunch of kids dressed up in various historical uniforms and then proceeded to the corner of the stage to light a wonky cutout of a menorah. I wish, however, to discuss the underlying philosophical meaning of the Chanuka miracle. The Talmud asks the same question Mai Chanuka – what is Chanuka? (Trac. Shabbat 23a) Interestingly, the explanation given there makes no mention of the military victory against the SyrianGreek armies, nor does it describe the resultant era of political and religious freedom ushered in by the Maccabees. In the Talmud’s way of telling it, the Chanuka miracle is exclusively the story of a tiny

vial of oil that burned for 8 days. Some 8 years ago I spent the week of Chanuka in Detroit, Michigan running a Dreidel House for the local community. School groups would come in and be given a quick tour of our Chanuka exhibition. We’d sing some Chanuka songs, play a game of dreidel and then feed them some latkes (which for some extraordinary reason Americans seem to prefer eating with apple sauce?!). We’d utilise the down time to chat to passing strangers, invite them in, offer them the opportunity to put on Tefillin and generally try to snatch a few minutes of adult conversation after days of mindless tedium repeating the same spiel over and over to thousands of grotty, apple-sauce bedecked, loud-mouthed American kids. I fell into conversation with one guy, who reTO ADVERTISE 0411.395.031
fused to put on Tefillin, take home a menorah, or have anything to do with anything smacking even vaguely of religion. He was a Secular-Humanist he told me proudly, who had just come from the Secular-Humanist Chanuka party. (Apparently, Detroit and its neighbouring city, Windsor, is the world centre for Jewish Secular-Humanists). Isn’t that extraordinary? Imagine, a self-proclaimed Secular-Humanist celebrating Chanuka! Surely the Chanuka victory was not only against the foreign forces of the Greek-Syrian army but also marks the defeat of the Hellenised Jews by believers in traditional Judaism. Fighting on the side of the Greeks were a fifth column of assimilated Jews, and the Maccabee victory was not merely of a military nature, but presaged a wide spread revivalist movement and religious restoration. If anything the Secular-Humanists of today and their ilk represent the losing team in the Chanuka campaign. It is this aspect that the Talmud accentuates.
The miracle of the oil celebrates the triumph of the supernatural over the purely rational. The Greeks and their hangers-on were believers in the atavistic codas of the so-called civilised nations. They adored wisdom and celebrated power and military might. Their Temples were shrines to ‘gods’ who, according to their mythology, indulged in the most base of human type behaviour. Their quarrel was with the Jewish belief in the supra rational; in a way of life that elevates the will of the Divine over the dictates of human logic. The first and most important post-war act of the Maccabee was to repair the Menora and rekindle the lights of traditional Judaism. That miraculous light emanating from the menora illuminated not just the immediate surrounds of the Temple in Jerusalem but was a source of radiance for the whole world. That light still shines as brightly today, offering all Jews an opportunity to be reacquainted with our true meaning and purpose..•

WORLDWIDE KOSHER Q. If the same product is made in Australia and in the US and is Kosher in the US, is it Kosher in Australia?
A. The fact that a product is produced Kosher in one factory has little bearing on its kosher status elsewhere. The kashrus of a product depends on ingredients which need to be sourced Kosher and equipment that may need kashering. For example, Pringles are made in the US and in Europe. While the ingredients are identical, a key ingredient is E471, an emulsifier that can be kosher or can be animal based and very non-Kosher, yet chemically are identical. The Pringles plant in the US may be dedicated to Kosher while in Europe, non Kosher products are made with insufficient kashering in-between production runs.

VEGAN RESTAURANTS Q. Can I eat at a vegan or vegetarian restaurant which is not Kosher certified but does not have any animal products onsite?
A. Putting aside the issue of Maaris Ayin (the fact that a Jew is eating at a non-Kosher establishment and the impression that this gives to the onlooker) there are a Q. Fear of Public Speaking Dr Sue Lewis
Q. I am a very social person, and am generally very confident. But when it comes to public speaking I tense up, my heart starts racing, and I turn colors. What is the reason for this, and how can I overcome my fear of talking in front of a crowd? A. This question addresses a situation experienced by many people. You may be surprised to find that even the world’s most celebrated actors report that with each performance they experience “performance anxiety”, with racing heart, breathing difficulties and a sick feeling in the stomach. It is good to see that you describe yourself as generally confident and social. It suggests that this is a very specific , common and fixable issue. The question to ask yourself is whether it is important to you to overcome this fear. Does it impact on your life? Many people with this type of anxiety avoid any situation where they may have to speak in public. This can be a problem because it can limit your experience, impact your work. It could lead your children to believe that one gives into one’s fears. Think of the opportunities that you may miss out on if you get into an avoidance situation. Alterna12 DECEMBER 2011
tively, with a few simple techniques think of the feeling you will have when you overcome this fear and increase the potential to have your voice heard, to make a difference, to set a positive example, to achieve promotion in your workplace. Having imagined what the benefits will be when you succeed in overcoming your fear, tune into the thoughts you commonly have when you are speaking publicly. Perhaps you are thinking they will think I am stupid, don’t know what I am talking about, see me as awkward, fat etc. Instead, imagine how much people will learn from you, how much they will appreciate the effort you have made. Picture yourself smiling, engaging, relaxing, having the audience in the palm of your hand, doing a good job. Tune in directly to one or two faces and engage in real contact, as if you were speaking directly to this person. Prepare and have a crib sheet. This is a way of gaining control where you feel out of control. Practice handling “difficult” questions. Find a point of agreement with the challenging member of the audience. Take charge by moving the discussion or speech forward. Finally, enjoy the opportunity to have all these people paying attention to you. TO ADVERTISE 0411.395.031
Bit by bit, exposing yourself to situations where you take the opportunity to speak is a very useful way to overcome a fear of public speaking. There are also courses in public speaking which you may find useful if all else fails.•

Shining a light through dark times There are some things that defy description, that can only truly be experienced and conveyed through the language of the heart. My visit to the Rofeh Cholim Cancer Society (RCCS) was such an experience. Entering the offices in Williamsburg was like visiting another planet, one distantly removed from the mundane worries, humdrum tasks and happy occasions that dominate our everyday lives. This is a place where the overriding concern is the battle for life, where fragile human beings, from small babies to the elderly, pursue one goal only: survival. It is a world filled with pain and suffering, but it is also one where miracles happen.

To Be Organic or Not to Be? Taryn Dickman Dietitian, APD There are many health claims in the media, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction. One of the most controversial health topics of today is organic eating. Despite being more costly than conventional food, organic eating has become a popular way of life for many Australians, increasing in sales by approximately 20% in the past decade. What does the research show? Is organic eating worth all that it’s cracked up to be? What is organic eating? The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Organic crops are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides or artificial fertilisers, while organic livestock must have access to the outdoors (i.e. not caged) and eat organic feed. As a result, supporters of organic eating claim organic foods are more nutritious and pose less of a health risk when compared to non-organic foods. What does the research say? There is little scientific evidence to support claims that organic food is superior in terms of nutrient quantity and quality, when compared to conventional foods. Additionally, research shows that most food products in Australia have the same levels of nutri16 DECEMBER 2011
ents and no traces of pesticides, regardless of whether they are organic or not and therefore actual health risk reduction is debatable. Are there any benefits to organic eating? As there are no chemicals used during organic farming, some research has shown that there is minimal soil, air and water pollution. Moreover, a recent study showed that organic farming uses 50% less energy than conventional farming methods. Organic farming also promotes a more humane treatment of animals, by not confining animals to a cage during food production. And lastly, another benefit, although anecdotal, is that organic foods are tastier than their non-organic counterparts. The bottom line Although there is no research to prove organic foods are “healthier” than non-organic foods, organic farming promotes a healthier and more sustainable use of the environment. If you are considering organic eating it is important to weigh-up the higher costs associated with this dietary habit, with its positive effect on the environment. To be organic, or not to be, that is the question. TO ADVERTISE 0411.395.031

Biting into a Double Daneli Burger How badly does one have to hunger for a doubledecker pastrami burger on a sesame seed bun to give in and create a kosher deli to get one? Don't ask. It's not polite. And besides, it really doesn't matter. The fact is, two years ago Daniel and Eli Grosberg craved New York City's fave Jewish deli items enough to set up the best sit-in and takeout shop in Melbourne, and one of the best catering places in the city. The team can cater a simcha from 50 to 500 people, whether it's a Bat Mitzvah, a kiddush, a birthday party, or a bris, Daneli's can come up with an incredible menu. Their on-site sushi chef is available to create favorite sushi rolls for all the guests – or to make a platter for the event. The versatility is endless. “What a wonderful experience we had with them,” said Shira, whose kiddush was catered by Daneli's. “They catered our daughter's Kiddush and the service was simply superb. The food was plentiful and beautifully served. They took care of everything, and really helped to make our simcha beautiful and stress-free.” You can even order online through their website, and the menu can be downloaded from the site. (The Internet address is listed at the end of this article.) The shop itself, which seats 25 comfortably, is the first New York-style deli in Melbourne. The shop is even popular amongst those who don’t keep kosher, 18 DECEMBER 2011
with the option to dine at any restaurant and fast food place in Melbourne. The truth is, when you've been in the food biz long enough, and you know how to make a decent burger, aficionados know where to go. Dan and Eli spent quite a while in the food industry before they decided to open up shop. When the opportunity became available, however, they “seized the day.” Inspired by mom’s cooking, the two brothers created a selection that would overwork any mother – and satisfy any family. Imagination was the engine that drove the brothers to add the sushi chef to their team, and the chef's dreams to the menu. (Daniel's favorite dish on the menu is the sushi, it turns out. If you stop in, ask him why.) The deli produces a mouthwatering array of burgers, pastrami and roast beef sandwiches and wraps as well as chicken and steak salads, and chips. The dressing is the killer, though – whether ranch, spicy southern and vinaigrette, it adds the final touch to any dish that practically forces a diner to stick their fingers in their mouths. (Daniel's wife, Chanie, is enchanted by the grilled chicken salad, which she described as “finger lickin' good.” Chanie is American, so the description comes naturally.)

Daneli's (Dan-Eli, get it?) also features a Shabbos menu that includes traditional favorites such as roast chicken, chopped liver, chicken soup, shnitzel and even cholent during the winter months. “Ethnic” Israeli salad favorites such as matbucha (a Moroccan specialty salad featuring tomatoes, garlic, peppers and seasonings), chatzilim (eggplant), tabouli (bulgur wheat) and more are all among the regular offerings. So are the typical Ashkenazi “can't do withouts” like shnitzel and kugels. Bottom line - need to feed a crowd? On your way to the footy and need to get through the game? Kosherica Summer Getaway By Yochanan Gordon
s an advertising sales manager for a prominent New York based weekly Newspaper I deal very frequently with different travel venues who wish to advertise their programs. In these last few years, given the struggling economy, while advertising as a whole has been on the up it seems that many of these travel companies have scaled back in the number of tours that they offer per season – that is with the exception of Kosherica.
A
Having written in the past about Kosherica as a whole as well as some of the personalities that run the day to day operations and continuously develop new concepts in kosher travel, it seems that the prevailing trend in Kosherica’s seasonal schedule these past few years have reflected steady growth, unlike many other kosher travel companies. Before getting into the endless details and reasons to entrust your travel plans with Kosherica, I think that alone is indicative of the fact that they have their finger on the pulse of the needs of the discerning kosher traveler. Above and beyond our top ten list of reasons for going away and what each of us respectively looks to accomplish on our vacations, the underlying commonality found in all of our plans is the opportunity to recharge and rejuvenate ourselves allowing us to carry out our day to day lives and responsibilities with greater focus and energy. What’s particularly rewarding about a summer getaway is that in many cases the children are away from home having a blast in summer camps giving us added peace of mind and allowing us to relax and enjoy ourselves with greater ease. So while a large part of Kosherica’s success has been their endless breathtaking excursions to the worlds most magnificent sites an equal amount of time is spent aboard the worlds leading cruise liners being wined, dined and entertained and being serviced by the entire team in a manner of aristocracy. As mentioned one of the most astonishing aspects of Koshericas growth is the way they continue to outdo themselves from season to season qualitatively in the continuous stream of new and exciting destinations and excursions and quantitatively in the number of cruises leaving from various starting points on varying dates throughout the summer solely for the convenience of the traveler. In the famous words of James Earl Jones 20 DECEMBER 2011
for a New Jersey Bell Yellow Pages commercial, “I need More Choices” and Kosherica delivers just that. On that note, a visit to their website at www.kosherica.com will reflect twelve cruises running from June through August. What do an Israeli backpacker, a pilot, an actuary, a medical student, and an advertising consultant all have in common? These are some of the students of diverse backgrounds that have come to learn at Merkos Women. Melbourne, Australia was already blessed with many wonderful institutions of Jewish learning for girl’s, from pre-schools right through to Seminary. It seemed as if all bases were covered. Eliezer and Luba Kornhauser, however, saw a need that wasn’t yet addressed. They dreamed of creating a learning centre for Universityaged women. 10 years ago, Merkos Women was born. Classes began around the Kornhauser’s dining room table. Inspiring Shabbatons were hosted in their house. Special programs were organised for upcoming holidays, as well as Rosh Chodesh . Twice a year, during university vacation, many students came to participate in an intensive week of learning and living Judaism, called Going Deep. 5 years ago, the time seemed ripe to expand to a full time program. Classrooms were built, dedicated to the memory of Eliezer’s father. Experienced teachers were hired, offering a wellrounded program to a diverse group of students. A dormitory was set up next door in a beautiful home,

ensuring that the physical and spiritual needs of the students are well looked after. Students from Brisbane, Sydney, and other Australian cities, as well as visitors from Canada, Israel, and Europe have joined. More recently, a post-graduate seminary program at Merkos Women has attracted advanced students from all over the world. There is an atmosphere of warmth and caring for all who come, regardless of background. At the end of year lunch for MerkosWomen, one vivacious Israeli student, Tully, spoke. “When I started learning Torah, I could relate to the depth and meaning I found in it. I knew it was true, I could feel my neshama stirring. But to change my lifestyle?? How could I take on the obligation of Mitzvot? How could I give up so many things that were a normal part of my life until now?” Here Tully paused, lowering her voice that had risen with her question. “I had learned that when Moshiach comes, the whole world will be filled with knowledge of Hashem, and there will be no obstacles to serving Him. It will be that simple and obvious- and so, I thought, I can continue to live as I like- all these people who are already committed to Torah will soon bring Moshiach, and then I, too, will join them.” She spread her arms to illustrate her words, and TO ADVERTISE 0411.395.031
then clapped them together with a shake of her head and a resounding “No!” “I knew that wasn’t right- but I needed to understand why. I spoke to teachers and friends and discussed and debated. I finally thought of an analogy that I could relate to.” Her eyes sparkled as she described the following comparison: “When one is called upon to serve in the Israeli army, he is put in a group with other new recruits. Together, they go through rigorous training, to toughen them up physically, and to prepare them psychologically for the difficulties and dilemmas they may encounter. That’s hard enough, but the greatest test is saved for last. The soldiers can only ‘graduate’ the training course and earn their berets after a gruelling 3 day survival hike. The group is given a mission to accomplish while covering the most difficult terrain with very little supplies or support. You can’t imagine how difficult it isalmost impossible. When you feel like you have no strength left, you have to dig deeply inside to find hidden resources to keep on going” Here Tully took a deep breath. “Now, obviously, not every soldier is the same. Some are stronger and hardier than others, while some are more resilient and perseverant. There are those, however, that just find it too hard. They begin to lag behind, and if no help is forthcoming, are unlikely to make it to the goal. Is it reasonable to assume that the hardier soldiers forge ahead with no backward glance,

eager to reach the end and get their beret?” Tully is totally animated as she negates this possibility. “Absolutely not! Each soldier knows that he is part of the whole. If even one of his friends doesn’t make it to the finishing line, no one graduates-no beret for anyone. Consequently every person looks after the next. If a recruit sees someone starting to falter, he stops to help. Perhaps he only needs to give a word of encouragement, or a hand to steady him on a rocky slope. It may be necessary to carry some of the other fellow’s equipment, as well as his own 30 kg. backpack. Sometimes there’s no way the other guy will make it on his own two feet, so his friends just pick him up and carry him through. If they are capable then it’s up to them to make sure everyone gets there, they can’t just think of themselves.” Tully’s eyes sparkled and danced as she drew her conclusion: “I remember how I felt then, that each and every one of us had to put their utmost effort into that united goal. No one was going to do less than they were able. Even those that needed help did as much as they could. In Judaism, our goal is to bring Moshiach. We Jews are all in this together. I can’t just sit back and let it happen. If I’ve learned , and I’m capable, then it’s up to me as well, to forge through with all my strength, and together we’ll get there, as one entity, to greet Moshiach.”
