The Observant Jew By Rabbi Jonathan Gewirtz

Can I offer you a lift? I’m heading that way anyway. Come on, hop in. All set? Comfy? Buckled? Great. Yeah, it’s rough out there. It’s nice when you have a comfortable car to ride in, out of the heat or the cold or the rain. What’s that blue butterfly on my rearview mirror? It’s funny you should ask. There’s a great story behind that. One day, I had taken my girls to the doctor, probably for well-visits, or more likely for shots, since those are generally MY responsibility. After behaving well, my daughters, then about two and a half and four and a half respectively, received a number of stickers. While showing each other the various ones they had and discussing trading, my little one picked up a pretty blue butterfly and declared, “Daddy should get a sticker!” She handed it forward, and I affixed it to my mirror. I knew that way she would see me “use” it, and I could remove it more easily than I could from the dashboard. But I never did remove it. Every time I look at it, I see that sweet little girl, overflowing with love and generosity, feeling that Daddy is good enough and loved enough that he deserves to have a sticker and she’s going to make sure he gets it. Sometimes, when she’s driving me crazy, or when she misbehaves, I’ll look at the sticker and start to calm down. It takes me back and reminds me that deep down, she’s genuinely loving, caring, and generous. Recently, that little sticker gave me an insight into a famous phrase. Yirmiyahu (2:2) tells us that HaShem says, “I remember the kindness of your youth, the love of when you were a bride, when you followed Me in the desert, in a land that was not sown.” 12

Let’s think about that. What does it help to remember that someone USED to be good to you, when now they’re rotten? HaShem remembers us when we were devoted to him, and therefore takes us back even after we’ve betrayed Him. How does that work? Before I explain, let me tell you another story. One day, my wife called me very upset. My daughter had balked at eating some sort of green vegetable which was served for dinner and simply refused to taste it. The situation devolved into both parties getting upset. When my wife told me about it, I started laughing. Astounded at my insensitivity to her frustration, my wife asked me what exactly I found so funny. I paused, then said, wistfully, “We’re back to corn and sweet potatoes,” referencing the only baby food we had been able to get our beloved baby girl to eat when she was an infant. Not peas, not green beans, nothing green – just the small orange jars of corn and sweet potatoes. My wife’s heart melted and she couldn’t be mad at her baby anymore. It wasn’t her fault; this was how she was made from the beginning! Just like my sticker, it reminded us of what lie inside of our daughter in her youngest years, and that it still existed inside her today. And that’s the message of the posuk. HaShem says, “I remember when you were enamored with Me; when you clamored to be close to Me. I know that though we’ve been driven far apart, that desire of your youth still resides within you and can resurface with great force.” Even though we think we’ve changed permanently, deep down, He knows we really haven’t. I like to think that it has broader applications too. Remember when you were young and idealistic? When you thought you could change the world and were willing to give your all June 29, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

to make things happen? Remember when you found joy in the simple things in life, and you weren’t concerned about “stuff ” or jealous of others? You might have to go way back to when you were a toddler - when playing with a big box and your imagination could be an all-day event. Think about the people in your life who give you a hard time, or make things difficult for you. Maybe it’s a parent or grandparent who needs care, and you’re feeling resentful. Maybe it’s a spouse who you feel was nasty or insensitive to you. Go back to when that person made your life sweet, or when they were caring and good, and see if you can bring back some of the good feelings and be forgiving. See, what I’ve realized is that it’s not too late to look back and see that inner child, the one who was so sweet and innocent. It’s not too late to bring back the kid who was so proud to read the Aleph-Bais or recite a Dvar Torah he learned in school. You can still find the little girl who shared so nicely and was happy when someone else got something she liked; who wasn’t jaded or cynical.

to remind me that all our potential isn’t just in the rearview mirror, it still lies ahead of us, as long as we keep it in our sights. That doesn’t only go for us, but for everyone – HaShem said so. Well, I’m stopping here, but at least you’re a little closer to your destination now. Safe travels, and just keep taking this road straight ahead. You’ll get where you want to get; I’m sure of it. Parshas Chukas

R’ Ben Tzion Shafier-The Shmuz

EARNING A LIVING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT “And HASHEM said to Moshe and Aharon, ‘Because you did not believe in Me to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore, you will not bring this congregation to the land that I have given them.’” — Bamidbar 20:12 For almost forty years while the Jews were traveling in the desert, their source of water was the be’er, a large rock that provided the water they needed to survive. The Jewish nation then consisted of about three million people. They had also taken many animals with them when they went out of Mitzrayim, so they required millions of gallons of water each day. The be’er provided all they needed and more. When Miriam died, the rock disappeared, and the Klal Yisroel recognized that their survival was in jeopardy. HASHEM told Moshe Rabbeinu to go out into the desert, speak to the rock, and bring the water back. When Moshe and Aharon went to the rock, they spoke to it and received no response. Moshe then assumed that just as it was necessary to hit the rock when the Jews first went out into the desert, so too now. When he hit the rock, it began pouring forth water. Later, HASHEM told Moshe and Aaron that they had erred. HASHEM told them to speak to the rock, and it was through the power of speech that the miracle was to come about. On some level, they were lacking in their trust in HASHEM, and this caused them to miscalculate. Had they been more complete in their trust, they would have used words alone, and the rock would have provided the water. 18

Rashi tells us that because of this mistake, the Jewish people lost out on a great lesson. Had Moshe only spoken to the rock, the Jews would have said to themselves, “A rock doesn’t require sustenance, yet it listens to the word of HASHEM; surely, we, who rely on HASHEM for parnassa, must listen to Him.” However, since Moshe hit the rock instead of speaking to it, that lesson was lost. Rashi seems to be saying that if Moshe had spoken to the rock, the Jewish people would have increased their level of service to HASHEM. They would have realized that their livelihood was dependent upon their doing mitzvahs, and this would have added focus and precision in the way that they fulfilled them. There are two problems with understanding this Rashi. One is that the Gemara tells us that the reward for mitzvahs is not in this world. While it is true that HASHEM rewards every good a person does, the place of that reward is in the World to Come. In fact, it is considered a curse to use up your payment in this world – something that is reserved for wicked people. So it doesn’t seem to be correct that their livelihood was dependent upon listening to HASHEM. The second problem with this Rashi is that any motivational system must be tailored to fit the audience. The people of this generation received the Torah on Har Sinai. They spent almost forty years surrounded by the Clouds of Glory, completely immersed in Torah study, and sustained by the mon. They were on the highest madreigah of any generation June 29, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

in history. So even if their parnassa was dependent upon their listening, how would they be motivated by something so mundane as earning their daily bread?

more clear recognition that their existence was dependent upon keeping the Torah, it would have changed even their appreciation — but it was a lesson lost.

The answer to this question is based on understanding the Rambam (in Hilchos Tshuvah, Perek 9). He explains that even though we don’t receive reward for doing mitzvahs in this world, if a person keeps the Torah properly, then HASHEM will remove all of the obstacles that normally prevent a person from keeping the mitzvahs. Sickness, war, poverty, and hunger prevent a person from learning or fulfilling the mitzvahs. If a person is happy and dedicates himself to keeping the Torah, HASHEM will shower him with all of the requirements to better serve Him, including peace, tranquility, well-being, sustenance, and all else that a person needs to follow the Torah.

The concept that HASHEM takes care of our needs when we use our lives properly can be a great source of motivation. Earning a living isn’t easy. Market economies rise and fall. Entire industries come and go. Careers that are in high demand in one decade are outsourced and sent overseas the next. Financial security in an ever-changing world is fragile at best.

The Rambam is telling us that since HASHEM created the world in order to have man follow the Torah, when a person uses the world properly, then HASHEM allows him to have his needs met in this world without strain. This will help him better serve HASHEM. HASHEM was telling Moshe and Aharon that this lesson would have greatly affected the generation of the desert, but it was lost. Had the people seen the rock obeying HASHEM’s command, they would have been moved to a powerful realization: “The rock doesn’t have needs, yet it listens to HASHEM. How much more so should we, who have so many needs? HASHEM has promised that if we follow in his ways, He will remove all obstacles from our path. But if we don’t listen. . .” That was a lesson that would have affected even this generation because their very survival depended on it. While people may have many lofty motives, one of our strongest drives is self-preservation. Had that generation come to a

While our main motivation to keep the Torah is that HASHEM commanded us to do it for our benefit in the World to Come, the reality is that we live in this world. We have bills to pay, children to put through school, and many, many financial obligations. Knowing that HASHEM will remove the obstacles standing in our way, as long as we dedicate ourselves to passionately keeping the Torah, can be a great impetus to growth. This is not to say that life will be a bed of roses. There will still be nisyonos, life tests and different settings that we need for various reasons. However, the basic starting position is that HASHEM will take care of my needs so that I can better serve Him. That understanding can aid us to focus on our true purpose in this world and allow us a much greater degree of success in all of our endeavors. Hands-on-How-to’s for the Home & Heart … on gratitude Begin by removing the “they owe me” attitude. Tell yourself again and again, until you truly believe it, “No one owes me anything.” That includes, but isn’t limited to, your spouse, parents, children and neighbors.

… on Kavana in davening As you begin each pasuk or even each line or phrase, think BRIEFLY about the first letter. Mentally determine its gematriah, consider its sound or just name the letter itself. Any variation can work; the point is to get your brain to think. Try it and you will be amazed.

…on shmiras haloshon Start off by davening. At the end of every Shemoneh Esrei we ask HaShem to guard our tongue from speaking evil. Pause a moment and be sure to focus when you say it. There is also a beautiful prayer composed by the Chofetz Chaim which says it all. Keep in mind that regrettably, speaking loshon hora without doing proper teshuva greatly weakens the power of our tefillos; it actually damages our tongue. The Sifri (Devarim 34:10) comments that among the Jewish People there will not be a prophet of equal stature with Moshe. Among the gentiles, however, there was Bilaam. This implies that Moshe and Bilaam had a comparable spiritual capacity. Moshe was the humblest of people, a kind teacher, leader and advocate of the Jewish people. Bilaam was greedy, arrogant, cruel and a wicked sorcerer. How can we compare them? Kabbalah describes three primary cognitive faculties in the human being: Chochmah/Wisdom, Bina/Understanding and Daas/Knowledge. Chochmah is the space for conception of new ideas. It holds the creative mind and releases our epiphanies. Through Chochmah we receive the spark of an idea from the super-conscious, but it is not fully developed. Yet, from this flash of insight we know that we have found an answer that we have been seeking and must pursue. Bina is the next stage of the cognitive process and it receives the new idea from Chochmah. Only in Bina is an idea fully developed from a single point to an expanded set of details. From the initial flash of insight, a complete thought is built with all of its applications and ramifications.

The Torah tells us “The man [Adam] knew his wife Eve and she conceived and bore Cain…” (Bereshis 4:1) The Daas/Knowledge of Adam and Eve was their intimacy. They were fully united as one being and their souls connected on the highest planes, they were now truly a pair who knew and felt each other mentally, emotionally and physically. Their relationship became real and fully manifest in their lives. G-d desires only what is good and holy, however, for free will to be real to us, both sides must exist. Therefore, for every positive and holy force in G-d’s creation, there is an equal but opposing negative and unholy force. So, for Chochmah, Bina and Daas, as with the other divine attributes, there are both holy and unholy sides. The Kabbalists explain that Moshe and Bilaam were both embodiments of the divine attribute of D a a s / K n ow l e d g e. Moshe was a force of Daas Shel Kedusha/Holy Knowledge and Balaam was the equal but opposing force of Daas Shel Klipah/Unholy Knowledge.

(In many places, we learn how Moshe is connected to the attribute Netzach/Victory. Still, Moshe is also a facet of Daas, as our perception of a soul depends on the perspective. Similarly, Rabbi Reuven Wolf we usually find Avraham associated with Chesed/Kindness, however he is often also associated with Daas is the path of a complete thought from the intellect into the emotions. After information has been processed, our Chochmah/Wisdom.)

KNOW THE GOOD

Daas brings it to heart. Through Daas, ideas become real to us, and we begin to feel them emotionally and can implement them into reality. Daas creates an intimate connection between us and another entity, concept or being; it’s a very deep and powerful bond, a driving force. 26

In us, the Holy Daas represented by Moshe is our sensitivity to identifying with holiness. With holy Daas, we extract from our own spiritual ideas and information the energy and excitement for doing mitzvos, serving G-d and making the world into a better and holier place. When we feel a desire June 29, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

and are drawn to materialistic, mundane or unholy things and pleasures, we are exhibiting Balaam’s quality of unholy Daas. Our Daas feeds perspective on the information which we possess. If we have an epiphany, learn something new from a book or a teacher, experience an unusual event, or see a person behaving in an unexpected way, how will this new information play into our own lives? Whether it’s consciously or unconsciously applied, our Daas will determine our reaction and feelings, and ultimately, motivate our actions. Through holy Daas, we will dig deep and find holiness in every person or experience, even if it’s deeply buried under many layers of questionable integrity. With unholy Daas one can easily detect and harbor on the slightest negativity or insincerity, gravitate to it, expose it, and spoil any goodness that was there. Since Adam committed the sin of eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, everything in the world has been is a mixture of good and bad. With the exception of a few lofty and righteous souls, Tzadikim, every person’s actions (or motivations) also contain both positive and negative elements. There isn’t any good that doesn’t have a little bad mixed in, and there is not any evil which is without a kernel of goodness. If we examine our own genuine and spiritual acts, we may find our own inappropriate motives. Perhaps deep down, we enjoy honor and fame, and study Torah for this reason, even if it’s only a miniscule personal pleasure. In shul, we might shuckle and sway with great enthusiasm, hoping someone else will notice. Isn’t it conceivable that some of us like to see our names on a building, or in a news photo? Of course, nobody is perfect. Pure tzaddikim are rare individuals, spread sparsely throughout the generations. Our job isn’t to completely eliminate every kernel of evil within ourselves – that’s practically impossible. Our job is to serve Hashem and fight the unholy, to stifle and restrain it and prevent it from man-

ifesting in our lives in a real way. We cannot eradicate it, but we can do our best to control it and keep it in check. As explained in the book of Tanya, that is what expected from us. So, for most people, when we are involved in a good and holy deed, even if it’s likely that there is some tinge of personal gain involved, it’s also probable that we are involved mostly for good reasons. When someone is truly acting ostentatiously or pretentiously, we don’t need a complex Daas to detect it, it’s usually quite obvious to everyone that observes. The true power of Daas is to extract a deep reaction from even an ordinary thing, idea or event. When we study another person’s actions and dig up an inner motive, the true nature of our Daas is revealed. Bilaam had the ultimate unholy Daas; he was able to smell a rat from a mile away. He had a knack for spotting insincerity. As the adage says, “It takes one to know one.” Bilaam was so evil at his core that it was easy for him to spot even the tiniest indiscretion. Whenever there was a possibility of anything insincere or unholy, he could find that single speck and disregard all of the goodness that came along with it. Whom was he was trying to curse? This was a generation of Jews that grew up and learned Torah with Moshe. They had been eating Manna and drinking from Miriam’s well. They were Tzaddikim of the highest caliber! When Balaam came to slander them, he couldn’t slander them directly, because he knew there was nothing overtly negative to say, even the last traces of the sin of the golden calf had been obliterated. His keen eye spotted one test they would fail. This generation had a deeply rooted, almost hidden problem. In Egypt for 210 years, the Jews were steeped in hedonistic living and immorality. Although they had since stood at Sinai and purified themselves completely, Bilaam perceived that unaware even to them was still a minuscule appreciation for the immoral Egyptian lifestyle. His

test sought to expose it. It took Balaam’s astute Daas to draw it out. Moshe’s holy Daas results in the exact opposite. When Moshe saw another human being, even one who was involved in despicable things, he only perceived the goodness in the experience. Moshe knew and realized that we are all ultimately driven by a spiritual desire, even if it manifests in a backwards or sinful way. We might be quick to judge another person based on their behaviors and attitudes, but Moshe saw past all of that and saw every person’s inner spiritual drive and goodness. Bilaam’s goal, like many of his ilk before and after his time, was to empower evil. Through his power of unholy Daas, he wanted to belittle the Jewish people in Hashem’s eyes. If G-d is angry with His children, He turns His back to the world. When the Jewish people are in exile, G-d lovingly awaits their return to Him, and indiscriminately continues to throw life at the world until He can favor them once more, He must not pay attention. If G-d would be exacting in His life-force during these times, the Jewish people may not bode well, therefore He ‘blindly’ sustains all life. Similar to what Haman tried to accomplish, Bilaam was looking to access G-d’s ‘blind’ light, which he would direct and use to his own evil devices. The Jewish people have enough enemies and accusers in this world. We should never engage in unholy Daas. We must only see the inherent good in others and the world around us. By celebrating each other’s strengths and always highlighting the best in others and our environment, we can supercharge our emotions with spirituality. We can be like Moshe, the ultimate advocate of the Jewish people, who with his good eye and holy Daas, brought us to the ultimate heights. Through this we can implement G-d’s will for a time when “…the world will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem…” (Isaiah 11:9), very soon, when all evil will be eradicated from the world, and we will all be in Jerusalem, with Moshiach and the holy Third Temple.•

found in some formulas, extra water might be needed in order to excrete it from the kidneys, where it might otherwise remain. Formula fed babies also have less efficient metabolisms than nursed babies, so they use up water faster; as the body uses it in the processing of the formula. When should I begin introducing solid food to my nursing baby?

A Guide For Mother’s: Common Nursing Questions By Sara Chana, IBCLC, RA (AHG)

Do exclusively nursing babies need water? As the weather gets warmer and mothers and babies begin to spend more time outdoors, nursing mothers always wonder whether they need to supplement their babies’ liquid intake with water. The answer to this question is no! A mother’s milk contains 88% water and breastmilk is perfectly formulated to keep babies hydrated no matter what the weather or ambient temperature is. A nursing mother who herself is well-hydrated, and is allowing her baby to breastfeed as often as the baby desires, will stay perfectly hydrated, no matter how hot the weather becomes. A number of studies have been done in various locations—both humid and dry and at temperatures ranging from 22-41°C (71.6-105.8°F) with 90-96% relative humidity. Results from these studies revealed that exclusively nursing babies do not need to be given supplements of water. It’s important to know that giving water to a nursing baby five months of age and younger is actually dangerous. It is important to know that too much water can dilute the sodium in the baby's bloodstream to the point where "oral water intoxication" develops. Oral water intoxication can lead to symptoms like low body temperature, bloating, and seizures. Nursing babies that have reached the six month mark also do not need water, but it is not harmful if they do occasionally sip water from a cup. Although nursing babies do not need any supplemental water, it is interesting to note that formula fed babies sometimes do require some water. Due to the higher salt level

32

It’s important to know that a mother’s milk changes as the child grows; keeping up with the nutritional needs of the baby. So, your milk is as nutritious for a ten month old as it was for a two week old. Therefore, nursing babies generally don’t need to eat solids until they have from four to eight teeth or until they can sit up, support themselves in a high chair and manage, by themselves,to get more food into their mouths than they do in their hair or on the floor. This exact age varies greatly from family to family and from child to child. But don’t confuse the need for oral discovery with hunger. Babies become very orally excited between the ages of five to nine months old. As strange as it is, all humans in their first year of life discover the world through their mouths. When they begin to wiggle, creep and crawl along— sweepingthe floors clean with their bodies, they begin tasting EVERYTHING. For a baby, a piece of newspaper is a delicacy, a dust bunny a delight and sticky leftover food droppings a hidden treasure. It is important to note in this case, that the baby does not need to fill his tummy with solids or liquids rather it’s more about discovery and the oral sensation. If a baby is nursing well, not getting sick, and is happy, then think of food as a science project rather than a ‘requirement.’ When the time is right, let them explore the world of taste, texture and smell by allowing them to play and mush foods of all kinds. Give them foods with different colors and textures to play with. Think quality, by letting their scientific minds develop, rather than just pushing quantities of food into their little tummies, that most babies really don’t require. What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan? Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.
