true source of all power. This prayer was the way the Rabbis could both praise the worldly ruler and acknowledge the Ruler of the World. For Rabbi Siegel, this prayer was perfect.
T
he year was 1973. Richard Nixon was about to be inaugurated for his second term as President. While this was before the Watergate revelations, Nixon did not need Watergate to be disliked, even hated by many Americans. Nixon had not ended the Vietnam War during his first term as he had promised. Many tied this fairly unpopular war to Nixon by this time. President Nixon was called many names by his detractors, the most common being “Tricky Dick.” Although he had been reelected by a sizable majority, large segments of the American public ridiculed this man. At that time, I served as Research Assistant to Rabbi Seymour Siegel, Z’L. Professor Siegel was asked to recite the Benediction at the Nixon Inaugural. He felt a need to base the prayer he would say on Jewish tradition. What was an appropriate prayer for the “leader of the free world?” Rabbi Siegel reasoned that the President of the United States was every bit as powerful in his day as the ancient emperors of Greece and Rome were in their day. There was a special prayer that historically was to be said whenever one encountered an emperor or similar worldly leader. Rabbi Siegel would recite this traditional prayer at the inaugural, first in the Hebrew and then in English translation: “Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has given of your glory to mortal man.” With these words, Rabbi Siegel would proclaim before the millions watching the true source of power. When The New York Times was informed of the intention to offer this blessing for President Nixon, Times reporters questioned whether it was fitting that a man hated by so many would be offered the same blessing as great past leaders, such as Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar, Professor Siegel calmly responded that this prayer was historically offered when witnessing an emperor whether that emperor was good or bad, liked or despised. Upon confronting worldly power, it was important to acknowledge the power and proclaim the

During the inaugural activities of the past week, many observed how President Bush was booed by thousands of those gathered at the Washington Mall when he first appeared. These and other thousands cheered loudly as the helicopter carrying President Bush and his family left the Capitol grounds. This was not a cheer of “job well done.” This was a cheer of “good riddance.” Of course, the hundreds of thousands of Obama supporters gathered for this historic event cheered virtually every word uttered by the new President Obama. Yet, upon listening to Talk Radio that same day, I witnessed the potshots and criticism launched by the anti-Obama partisans. Their making fun of “The Anointed One,” as Obama detractors love to call him in jest, was as obnoxious as the boos earlier in the day at the Washington Mall. Both outgoing President Bush and incoming President Obama have been blessed with part of the divine spark of glory and power. Their rising to leadership represents a diving blessing. They each reflect part of the divine glory that guides this world. Encountering them is not a cause for booing or making light. Our American Presidents who preside with power over much of the world and whose actions have such a profound impact represent something much higher. The true source of power is G-d. While their power is infinitesimally small in contrast to the power of G-d, all power emanates from the One Source. This was the important teaching of our Rabbis of old as they developed a prayer for the occasion of witnessing a world leader. This was the teaching of Rabbi Seymour Siegel who taught this from the podium on the Capitol steps in 1973. This lesson rings true for us as well today. It is appropriate to back an opposing candidate for office. It is appropriate to be at times a member of the “loyal opposition” to the party or person in power. But the level of criticism which has risen to mockery and ridicule is inappropriate. This is not how we should teach our children to react. As we inappropriately make fun of our elected leaders, we risk making fun of G-d, the ultimate source of power, the model Leader. In the time of President Nixon when millions went too

A Tree's New Year Resolution
far in their attempts to belittle the elected President, Rabbi Seymour Siegel stepped forward to provide us with an important lesson. This lesson remains appropriate today. At the time of the Inauguration of President Obama, it is important for all Americans, indeed all who inhabit this world, to honor his position and the true source of power: “Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has given of your glory to mortal man.” Amen. • Robert J. Rome, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in clinical practice in Encino, California. He can be reached at RJRome@aol.com.
Tu B'Shevat -- the 15th of the Hebrew month of Shevat -- is known as the "New Year for Trees." Naturally this would be a time for trees to engage in soul-searching -- the same way people do on Rosh Hashanah. Here is a tree's New Year Checklist: • Did I shelter the seedlings that live in my shade so they will grow up to be a next generation like myself ?
Apology There was an article in The Community Links that inappropriately and incorrectly linked a leader in the Jewish Community, who has not been charged or found guilty of any crime, with others who have been so-charged or convicted. For this and other implications in the article the staff of the Community Links and Dr. Robert Rome, author of the article, apologize and offer this correction.
• Did I grow towards the sun as a tree should, reaching up higher and higher towards that which I can never grasp, but which nurtures me all the same the more I strive towards it? • Did I make sure my roots remain firmly planted in the soil that nurtures them, and did I drop my leaves there in the fall to give back life to that which sustains me? • Did I ensure that my fruits were sweet and nourished all that came to enjoy them? Did everyone walk away from me with a smile? • Did I bend gently in the wind, accepting what G-d sends but never breaking or giving up hope? • Did I grow in strength and wisdom with each new ring this year? Come to think of it, not a bad checklist for us humans either!
We directly apologize also to Mr. David Rubin and his family.

"Don't get mad," said the philosophers of the eighties, "get even." I am not sure if the objective of the ten plagues was for the Almighty to get even with the nation that had enslaved His people. Certainly there are Midrashic sources that correlate the ten plagues as direct punishment for Egyptian crimes against the Jewish people. (Tana D'bei Eliyahu Chapter 7) So perhaps we might say that the Jewish people got even. There is, however, no scriptural reference to the fact that they got mad. In fact, each time Moshe went to Pharaoh a serene and calculated negotiation occurred. "Let My people serve Me," Moshe commanded. When Pharaoh refused his obstinence was met with a clear and calculated threat. "If you refuse to allow the people to leave, I will send the following plague in you land." And so it went. Sometimes a plague immediately followed a
warning, other times plagues came with no warning at all. When Pharaoh found Moshe and arranged for a cessation of the scourge, Pharaoh reneged on his commitment soon after. Moshe became frustrated, perhaps he even became impatient, but there was no anger until the final plague. Then, he not only got even, he got mad. Moshe warned Pharaoh with the words of Hashem, "At about midnight, I will go out in the midst of Egypt and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die." (Exodus 11:4) Though Moshe detailed the ramifications of the plague he was greeted with an apathetic response. Finally the Torah tells us, that "Moshe left Pharaoh in burning anger" (Exodus 11:8) Why, only then did Moshe storm out in a rage? Was he not accustomed to the callous recklessness of the Egyptian leader? What irked him during the last encounter more than any of the previous ones? The great physicist Albert Einstein escaped the Nazi

inferno to find a haven in the United States. During World War II his letter to President Roosevelt initiated the effort that spurred the creation of the atomic bomb. His theory of relativity was a prime factor in its development, and Einstein knew the destructive power that his ideas could potentially release. When Einstein heard in an August 6, 1945, radio broadcast that an atomic device was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, he reacted with stunned silence. After a moment of somber reflection he only found two words to say. "Oy vey!" Rabbi Shimon Schwab (d.1994) explains that Moshe had patience with Pharaoh up to a point. Throughout the ordeal, the reckless king's obstinate decisions caused a great amount of discomfort to his people. Even when his advisors pleaded, "How long will this man [Moshe] be an obstacle, let them [the Jews] serve their G-d," Pharaoh refused. His recalcitrance brought plagues of pestilence, boils, locust, and darkness -- in addition to blood, frogs, and lice. All of these afflictions were vastly uncomfortable -- but not fatal. Even the fiery hail did not harm the G-d-fearing Egyptians that sought shelter. The last, the Plague of the First Born, had the most devastating ramifications. It meant the deaths of thousands of Egyptians "from the firstborn son of Pharaoh to those of the maidservant who was behind the millstone." It was devastation so powerful that the Torah says that "such has never been and will never be again." (Exodus 11:6) Pharaoh was able to stop the imminent destruction with one simple word -- "Go." Yet he chose to remain steadfast in his denial, bringing the downfall of his people and the death of innocents. And that callous and reckless behavior infuriated Moshe, whose compassion for the simplest of beings earned him the right to be the leader of the Jewish nation. The stark contrast displayed by his nemesis appalled him to the point of rage. The Torah commands us, "do not to hate the Egyptian, for you were a sojourner in his land." (Deuteronomy 23:8) The Torah's attitude toward a nation that held us captive is even more compassionate than that of its own leaders. Barbaric leaders egging on many simple people throughout the world, to act in a self-destructive manner are reminiscent of the Pharaoh who destroyed his own family to save his ego. It's enough to make anybody -- even the most humble man who ever lived -- very angry. by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky www.torah.org Rabbi Aaron Tendler, Ner Yisroel Baltimore

T
hey say adapt or die. But must we jettison the old to embrace the new? Is the choice limited to modern or antiquated, or can one be a contemporary traditionalist? Do the past and present ever co-exist? At the beginning of this week's Parshah we read that Moses himself was occupied with a special mission as the Jews were leaving Egypt. Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. Over a hundred years before the great Exodus, Joseph made the Children of Israel swear that they would take him along when they would eventually leave Egypt. As viceroy of Egypt, Joseph could not hope to be buried in Israel when he died, as his father Jacob was. The Egyptians would never tolerate their political leader being buried in a foreign land. But he did make his brethren give him their solemn undertaking that when the time would come and all the Israelites would depart they would take his remains along with them. And so it was that while everyone else was busy packing up, loading their donkeys, and getting ready for the Great Trek into the Wilderness, Moses himself was busy with this mission, fulfilling the sacred promise made to Joseph generations ago. Now Joseph was not the only one to be reinterred in the holy land. His brothers, too, were accorded the very same honor and last respects. Yet, it is only Joseph whom the Torah finds it necessary to mention explicitly. Why? The answer is that Joseph was unique. While his brothers were simple shepherds tending to their flocks, Joseph was running the affairs of state of the mightiest superpower of the day. To be a practicing Jew while blissfully strolling through the meadows is not that complicated. Alone in the fields, communing with nature, and away from the hustle and bustle of city life, one can more easily be a man of faith. But to run a massive government infrastructure as the most high-profile statesman in
the land and still remain faithful to one's traditions -- this is not only a novelty, this is absolute inspiration. Thrust as he was from the simple life of a young shepherd boy into the hub of the nation's capital to juggle the roles of viceroy and Jew, Joseph represented tradition amidst transition. It was possible, he taught the world, to be a contemporary traditionalist. One could successfully straddle both worlds. Now that they were about to leave Egypt, the Jews were facing a new world order. Gone were slavery and oppression, and in their place were freedom and liberty. During this time of transition, only Joseph could be their role model. They would need his example to show them the way forward into uncharted territory, the new frontier. That is why the Torah mentions only Joseph as the one whose remains went along with the people. They needed to take Joseph with them so that, like him, they too would make their own transition successfully. Ever since leaving Egypt, we've been wandering. And every move has brought with it its own challenges. Whether from Poland to America or Lithuania to South Africa, every transition has come with culture shocks to our spiritual psyche. How do you make a living and still keep the Shabbat you kept in the shtetl when the factory boss says "Cohen, if you don't come in on Saturday, don't bother coming in on Monday either!" It was a test of faith that wasn't at all easy. Many succumbed. But many others stood fast and survived, even flourished. It was the test of transition -- and those who modeled themselves on Joseph were able to make the transition while remaining committed to tradition. Democracy and a human-rights culture have made that part of Jewish life somewhat easier, but challenges still abound. In all our own transitions today, may we continue to learn from Joseph. •

T
he sea had split. The enemy was drowned. And now the problems began.
The newly liberated nation was stranded in a scorching desert facing an unending landscape of uncertainties. Taskmasters no longer responded to their cries - Hashem did. He responded with protection and shelter on every level. But the Jews were still not satisfied. They were hungry. "If only we had died.. in the land of Egypt. Why did you liberate us to die in the desert? " they cried to Moshe. (Exodus 16:3 ) Hashem responds with a most miraculous and equally mysterious celestial gift. Food fell from the heavens, but the people accepted it with piqued curiosity. Indeed, the dew-covered matter satiated their hunger, but they were not sure what exactly it was. "Each man said to his friend, manna ! For they did not know what it was." (Exodus 16:14) The commentaries explain that the word manna is a HebrewEgyptian form of the word "what." At first, the Torah only discusses the physical attributes of the manna: "it was like a thin frost on the earth." The Torah continues to tell us that on Shabbos the manna did not fall. A double portion fell on Friday - the extra portion was allotted for Shabbos. In referring to the manna of Shabbos the Torah tells us, "the children of Israel named it manna , and it tasted like a cake fried in honey." Later, however, the Torah describes the manna's taste differently: "it tasted like dough kneaded with oil." (Numbers 11:8) Why does the Torah wait to describe the manna's taste until Shabbos? Also, when did it taste sweet and when did it only taste like oily dough? Another question is before Shabbos people asked, "what is it?" On Shabbos they named the miraculous food - "It is what” (manna). Why did the Jews wait until Shabbos to describe concretely the miraculous edible with an official title manna - the 'what' food? In the town of Lomza there was a group of woodcutters hired by the townsfolk to cut down trees for firewood. The strong laborers swung their axes and hit the trees all while shouting a great cry HAH with each blow. The timing had to be flawless. If the cry HAH came a split second early or, a second after the blade hit the tree, it would be a worthless shout that would not aid the lumberjacks at all. Each year, Zelig the meshugener (crazy), a once-successful businessman who had lost his mind together with the
23
January 30
loss of a young daughter, accompanied the woodcutters on their quest. He stood in the background and precisely as the ax hit the tree he, too, shouted on the top of his lungs HAH! When it was time to get paid, the deranged Zelig also stood in line. "I deserve some silver coins!" he exclaimed. "After all without, the chopping would not be as effective!" The case was brought before the Chief Rabbi of Lomza who looked at the five lumberjacks and then at the meshugener. "Listen carefully, Zelig," said the Rabbi. He then took 10 silver pieces in his hand and jingled them loudly. They made a loud clanging noise. Then he gave each woodsman two silver pieces. He turned to Zelig and smiled. "The men who gave the labor get the coins, and, Zelig, you who gave the sound, get the sound of the coins!" Hashem in His infinite wisdom began our lessons in living through our daily fare. The Talmud states that the taste of the manna was integrally linked with the taster's thoughts. If one thought of steak the manna tasted like steak; if one thought of borscht, the manna tasted like borscht. In fact, the Chofetz Chaim was once asked, "what happens if you think nothing?" He answered very profoundly: "If one thinks of nothing, then one tastes nothing!" During the week the Jews had the manna but did not realize its great potential. The Malbim explains that is why it only tasted like oily dough. But on Shabbos, a day filled with sweet relaxation, heavenly thoughts filled the minds of the nation. And those sweet thoughts produced sweet tastes! The Talmud also says that to small children the manna tasted like dough, but to scholars it tasted like honey. For if one thinks of honey, he tastes honey. When one thinks blandly, he has bland taste. Perhaps on Shabbos the Jewish People realized the important lesson of life. The questions we face should not be addressed as eternally mysterious. We can not face the unknown with the question, "what is it?" Rather, we can define our destiny and challenge our uncertainties. "It is what!" What you put into it is exactly what you take out! Life presents us many opportunities. We can approach those moments with lofty thoughts and see, smell, and taste its sweetness. Or we can see nothing and taste nothing. We can chop hard and reap the benefits, or we can kvetch and enjoy only the echoes of our emptiness.•

Q
Reuven discovered a very old edition of the Rambam's Mishna Torah among some very old Hebrew books that were placed in Genizah for disposal. He sold it to an antique book dealer, Shimon, for $1000. Shimon discovered handwritten notes on the margin of the Rambam that were signed by the Rema, which made the actual value of this Rambam $50,000! Is the original sale void, or do we say that Shimon may keep the Sefer and profit? [Please note that the prices mentioned here are just examples and do not reflect the actual price for such Sefarim].
Hilchos Choshen Mishpat MEKACH TA'OS / AN ERRONEOUS SALE
a. b. c. d. 28
When it comes to antiques, since there are so many variables governing the value of the object being sold, and there is really no clear, set, market value to any one item, in most situations the Halachos of Ona'as Mamon (overpricing) are not applicable, and neither side may void a sale based on the claim that the item purchased was under or over priced. However, if, for example, all dealers would pay at least $10,000 for this item, but some might pay much more, and the item was sold for less than $10,000, the seller would be permitted to claim that he was underpaid for the item purchased, and the sale may be voided.
A
Therefore, in our case, where the Rambam with the Rema's signature is worth at least $10,000 accord ing to all antique book dealers, the sale is void (since it was sold for considerably less than that) and Reuven may demand it back. However, he may not demand that Shimon purchase the Rambam for an additional $49,000, if the dealer has no interest in doing so. If after purchasing the Rambam, Shimon discovers that only some of the pages are from the Rambam, but it was bound together with another very rare Sefer that greatly increases its value, or that in the binding of the Rambam antique manuscripts were used which also increase the value of the Sefer, and Reuven was totally unaware of this, Shimon may keep the Sefer and does not have to inform Reuven that it was actually worth a lot more than what he sold it for. However, if Reuven had received the Sefer as a family inheritance, in this situation the sale would be void and Shimon would have to return it to Reuven if Reuven would like to return the money received and get the Sefer back. Although we stated previously that there generally is no Ona'as Mamon when selling antiques, it is obviously forbidden to sell something that is defective without informing the buyer of the defect. It is also forbidden to sell an item under the pretense that it is the original, when it is really only a copy. If this should occur, the buyer may void the sale and demand his money back whenever he finds out about this, even if it is many years after the actual sale.

A LETTER
Israel, no matter what Israel does.
A Jewish attorney in the US responded to my recent article The Psychology behind Mumbai and Gaza with this message: “The present situation in Gaza, with the 1.5 million Gazans being choked off from medicines and foodstuffs purposefully by the Israelis, so as to make lives so miserable that they would 'say Uncle' and change government (all the while with Israel carrying out executions of specific individuals in the West Bank and Gaza who they decide, with no court decision or determination by any neutral body deserve execution) is an unholy act. The reaction of some in Gaza to shoot homemade rockets is entirely justifiable. One would only have wished they could have made such weapons in the Warsaw Ghetto. Now the Israelis, much as the Nazis then, are bombing people in crowded living conditions, in the place with the highest density of people in the world. And you applaud this. “As you applaud this, Jews around the world become more and more reviled and hated for their association with Israel. We are looked upon as being able to commit evil, and all the while calmly and coolly justifying it, much as the Nazis of Hannah Arendt’s description. The Palestinian people- choked off from goods with which to live, to the extent that they have to make tunnels and walk great distances underground to get foods and medicines to their people- are fighting back in the only way they can. Rather than charge into the Israeli positions and merely be shot, they make their homemade rockets as they have no other choice. If they ceased doing that, Israeli would STILL view it as their right to choke them off and kill whomever they deemed worth killing. “Congratulations. You have managed to become just like those who killed so many from 1942 to 1945. You are a sick psychopath and I will not read or view your letters. I will delete them all as you have deleted yourself from humanity. You call yourself a Jew. I am a Jew. You are a rabid animal.” This letter – like many other voices we are hearing today -- is a sad demonstration of how confused so many of our brothers are; how ignorance and misguided idealism can lead people of good faith to such inhumane conclusions, as to define the monster as the saint, and the people yearning for nothing but a single day of peace as the Hitler’s living among us. Is a woman who fights off an attacker to be seen as the criminal? Israel would not touch Hamas if Hamas would stop sending rockets and suicide bombers into Israel. Israel would not erect a single blockade if Hamas and its allies did not seek to murder every Jew living in the land. Israel seeks to live in peace with its neighbors; Hamas and its allies clearly state that their objective is to destroy

My dear brother, may I ask a question: What if your little children were sitting and playing cards on the porch of your home in New Jersey when a group of gangsters kidnapped one of them and killed five other members of your family. These same gangsters then began launching thousands of rockets on your neighborhood, killing and maiming children and adults in their homes, in their schools, parks, shops and businesses. Your children -and thousands of other children -- would not be able to sleep at night. Each moment of their days and nights would be filled with dread of a sudden, violent death. What would be the right thing to do? What would be the appropriate response driven by sanity and compassion? What would you expect of your authorities at such a moment? Perhaps you'd opt for the choice of sending roses to the launchers of the rockets, to the kidnappers of the youngsters and the killers of your family, with a message of peace. You'd communicate to them how much we would like to reconcile our differences and reach a state of mutual respect. Now, let's say that following these gestures, including the fulfillment of their demands to redefine your borders, they continue to fire rockets indiscriminately. Innocent people are being buried. Your foe insists his goal is to destroy your entire family and annihilate your city. What would you do now? You may continue to choose to attempt mediation, calling for peace and compassion, and continue to reach out with affection to the launchers of the rockets. But wouldn't you then, in effect, be assisting their crimes against humanity, enabling children to be blown to pieces? If you observed a person about to launch a rocket at a school filled with children, what would be the moral response: to give the launcher an embrace as he shoots the deadly rocket, or to cut him down on the spot and save the lives of the children? Do you feel that the violent and bloody war against Hitler was also a rejection of the higher discourse that calls for sanity, peace and human compassion? I suspect that deep in your heart you know the answer: If the allies had not engaged the Nazi regime in war, you and I, together with millions of other Jews and innocent people, would not be here today. Hitler was not stopped

through love; he was defeated through aggression. And our fight was not an unholy act. THE GAZA WAR This is why every moral and compassionate person ought to support Israel today. In the past, the Israeli left and many liberal thinkers preached that the Arab aggression toward Israel was a result of its occupation of Arab land. Give up the territories occupied in the 1967 war, the left said, and reconciliation will follow. Gaza was a good experiment. In the summer of 2005, Israel withdrew completely from Gaza. In December 2003 Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced: “The purpose of the ‘Disengagement Plan’ is to reduce terror as much as possible, and grant Israeli citizens the maximum level of security. The process of disengagement will lead to an improvement in the quality of life, and will help strengthen the Israeli economy … These steps will increase security for the residents of Israel and relieve the pressure on the IDF and security forces in fulfilling the difficult tasks they are faced with. The ‘Disengagement Plan’ is meant to grant maximum security and minimize friction between Israelis and Palestinians.” Sharon believed, as did so many others, that with not a single Jew left in Gaza, with the Israeli occupation over, the Arabs living there would now be driven to create a beautiful functioning state for themselves, and security would reign for both sides. Alas, the exact opposite occurred. Hamas swept over Gaza and turned it into a terrorist state, with a single objective: to destroy Israel. Since August 2005 there is no more occupation in Gaza, not an inch. The result has been increased attacks targeting Israeli civilians, well within their own borders, on a daily basis. What do you expect Israel to do? Not to take any security measures to protect its children from being blown up? Not to stop Hamas? To define this war as state terrorism is not only objectively wrong, but also immoral. By demanding restraint from Israel, you are demanding that the country allow its children to be murdered. THE CIVILIAN CASUALTIES Hamas, not Israel, is culpable for the fate of the innocent people living in Gaza, whom they hide among and whose homes and schools they use as bases to launch

rockets, and as ammunition caches. Israel always makes sure to distant its war zones from civilian areas; Hamas makes sure to fight within civilian areas. Israel goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid killing civilians while Hamas does everything in its power to force Israel to kill Palestinian civilians by firing its missiles from densely populated residential areas and refusing to build shelters for its people. When a murderer takes a hostage and fires from behind his human shield, and a policeman, in an effort to stop the shooting accidentally kills the hostage, the law of every country holds the hostage taker guilty of murder even though the policeman fired the fatal shot. The cry against the tragic civilian casualties in Gaza is hypocritical. Hamas shoots rockets on civilians for years, yet nobody condemns or passes emergency resolutions. When Israel wants to defend itself, Hamas – like all sick monsters – uses civilians as shields. When Israel targeting Hamas, inevitably kills civilians, Hamas screams: Oy vey! They are murdering the innocent! And the world, instead of blaming Hamas for these tragic casualties, faults Israel. The strategy of Hamas is as simple as it is cynical: Provoke Israel by firing rockets into Israeli cities and towns, kindergartens, playgrounds and hospitals; hide behind its own civilians; refuse to build bunkers; have the TV cameras ready to transmit every image of dead Palestinians, especially children; exaggerate the number of civilians killed by including as "children" Hamas fighters who are 16 or 17 years old and as "women," female terrorists. It is a win-win situation: If Israel responds, they will unavoidably hit children, and if they don’t, Hamas can continue to fire. ON TO VICTORY During these challenging days, Israel and the Jewish people must stand tall and not falter nor sway. A war (and Hamas has repeatedly said this is war) is never won if you are disproportionately kind to someone who wants to destroy you and, failing in that, demands with indignation that you not destroy him. When meeting that enemy, be proportionate. Israel should not subject its children to death, in order to please pacifists and Jew haters who will criticize the Jewish state regardless. It must not hesitate to take the terrorists down in full force, and ultimately save the lives of innocent human beings - on both sides.•

“Man is a tree of the field,”and the Jewish calendar reserves one day each year—the “New Year for Trees” on the 15th of Shevat—for us to contemplate our affinity with our botanical analogue and what it can teach us about our own lives. The tree’s primary components are: the roots, which anchor it to the ground and supply it with water and other nutrients; the trunk, branches and leaves that comprise its body; and the fruit, which contain the seeds through which the tree reproduces itself. The spiritual life of man also includes roots, a body, and fruit. The roots represent faith, our source of nurture and perseverance. The trunk, branches and leaves are the “body” of our spiritual lives—our intellectual, emotional and practical achievements. The fruit is our power of spiritual procreation—the power to influence others, to plant a seed in a fellow human being and see it sprout, grow and bear fruit. ROOTS The roots are the least “glamorous” of the tree’s parts—and the most crucial. Buried underground, virtually invisible, they possess neither the majesty of the tree’s body, the colorfulness of its leaves nor the tastiness of its fruit. But without roots, the tree cannot survive. Furthermore, the roots must keep pace with the body: if the trunk and leaves grow and spread without a proportional increase in its roots, the tree will collapse under its own weight. On the other hand, a profusion of roots makes for a healthier, stronger tree, even if it has a meager trunk and few branches, leaves and fruit. And if the roots are sound, the tree will rejuvenate itself if its body is damaged or its branched lopped off. Faith is the least glamorous of our spiritual faculties. Characterized by a “simple” conviction and commitment to one’s Source, it lacks the sophistication of the intellect, the vivid color of the emotions, or the sense of satisfaction that comes from deed. And faith is buried underground, its true extent concealed from others and even from ourselves. Yet our faith, our supra-rational commitment to G-d, is the foundation of our entire “tree.” From it stems the trunk of our understanding, from which branch out our feelings, motivations and deeds. And while the body of the tree also provides some spiritual nurture (via its “leaves”), the bulk of our spiritual sustenance derives
39
January 30
from its roots, from our faith in and commitment to our Creator. A soul might grow a majestic trunk, numerous and wide-spreading branches, beautiful leaves and lush fruit. But these must be equaled, indeed surpassed, by its “roots.” Above the surface, we might behold much wisdom, profundity of feeling, abundant experience, copious achievement and many disciples; but if these are not grounded and vitalized by an even greater depth of faith and commitment, it is a tree without foundation, a tree doomed to collapse under its own weight. On the other hand, a life might be blessed with only sparse knowledge, meager feeling and experience, scant achievement and little “fruit.” But if its “roots” are extensive and deep, it is a healthy tree: a tree fully in possession of what it does have; a tree with the capacity to recover from the setbacks of life; a tree with the potential to eventually grow and develop into a loftier, more beautiful and fruitful tree. FRUIT The tree desires to reproduce, to spread its seeds far and wide so that they take root in diverse and distant places. But the tree’s reach is limited to the extent of its own branches. It must therefore seek out other, more mobile “couriers” to transport its seeds. So the tree produces fruit, in which its seeds are enveloped by tasty, colorful, sweet-smelling fibers and juices. The seeds themselves would not rouse the interest of animals and men; but with their attractive packaging, they have no shortage of customers who, after consuming the external fruit, deposit the seeds in those diverse and distant places where the tree wants to plant its seeds. When we communicate to others, we employ many devices to make our message attractive. We buttress it with intellectual sophistication, steep it in emotional sauce, dress it in colorful words and images. But we should bear in mind that this is only the packaging, the “fruit” that contains the seed. The seed itself is essentially tasteless—the only way that we can truly impact others is by conveying our own simple faith in what we are telling them, our own simple commitment to what we are espousing. If the seed is there, our message will take root in their minds and hearts, and our own vision will be grafted into theirs. But if there is no seed, there will be no progeny to our effort, however tasty our fruit might be.) •

Day 3 of Ceasefire Filled with Attacks As the Israeli and American people are engulfed in the euphoria of the swearing-in ceremony of America’s 44th president, Barak Obama, the fact that eights mortar rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza today almost went unnoticed. The secular mainstream media did its best to play down the attacks, briefly reporting ‘ceasefire violations’ while stressing most of the rockets landed in Hamas-controlled Gaza. In Israel, the severity of an attack is measured by its outcome, and in today’s case, with Hashem deciding the rockets will land short of their intended target was enough for Israel’s media to proclaim them ‘infractions’, perhaps ‘violations’, nothing more. After all, no one was injured or killed so in essence, it is as if it never took place.
Rocket damage to homes in Ashdod
Perhaps as quickly as America forgets its last president, Israelis will forget what the situation in the south was some three weeks ago, before Operation Cast Lead. The population is apparently too preoccupied with the ceasefire to be concerned with 8 rocket attacks, not even questioning where the “immediate and stern response” has vanished to. Yes, the air force did fire back a bit, but there was no stern response and there was no crushing blow to “restore and ensure our future deterrence” against future unprovoked rocket attacks against our civilian population centers.
Donators giving out toys to children in bomb shelters
The news on Tuesday night is addressing only one issue, the new American president. Without dispute, this is a global event but at the end of the day, the obsession with the American leadership seems to serve as a welcome deterrent from the events that should be occupying our attention, once again, permitting Israel’s leaders to divert the national attention away from the pressing realities of the unfinished Gaza War. Ironically, what should draw our attention goes unnoticed in the media, the fact that the theme of the presidential inauguration is synonymous with recognition of a G-d, a Supreme Ruler and the need for prayer. This aspect of the American pomp-and-ceremony is intentionally shunned, for we mustn’t permit the leaders of the Modern State of Israel to permit themselves to get too carried away with the old ways of yesterday, the tradition that has sustained Am Yisrael throughout the years of golus.
We merited seeing many miracles in Gaza, and those capable of realizing the threats faced by soldiers in Gaza as well as the close to 1 million southern residents. They are living testimony to the Divine Intervention that has once again delivered us safely from those who seek to destroy us. To our dismay, our secular leaders who yearn to compel a nation to accept their shallow ways are now once again seeking to undo the miracles, day-by-day, and we hope that they will not succeed in their mission, avulsing an entire nation from its current state of loftiness chas v’sholom. The media will continue selling the ceasefire and its merits, filling Israeli homes with TV visions of Gaza, showing the ‘horrors’ inflicted on the ‘innocent Palestinians’ by the IDF as they sought to snuff out the enemy. It is truly sad that a nation has reached a point where the propaganda machine of a barbaric enemy penetrates their hearts on a deeper level than the suffering of brothers and sisters, who for eight years have endured, paying a heavy price, and today, almost merited being delivered from that evil foe but were prevented from doing so by their own leaders.
