rime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu delivered a great speech to the United Nations last week.

What makes a great speech? We sometimes know a great speech when we hear it or when we read it or about it in history books. The greatest speech ever, or at least in our American history, was Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. That Lincoln was able to pack such a punch in so few words is a wonderment of the English language.

Sometimes, a line or two of a speech becomes highly memorable, bringing greatness to the speech itself. We recall MacArthur’s “Old Soldiers Never Die…” or FDR’s “You have nothing to fear but fear itself.” The famous line can catapult an otherwise routine speech into greatness. Many times, the only reason we recall the speech at all is the famous line, such as Lyndon Johnson’s “I will not seek nor will I accept the nomination of my party.”

We tend to be able to identify lousy speeches rather easily. Qadafi’s speech at the U.N. the same week as Netanyahu’s speech will become famous as a joke of a speech, a truly miserable speech only memorable for how bad it was. I recall what I think was the worst Presidential speech I ever heard when President Gerald Ford asked, “What did Congress do in May,” before ripping the month of May off of a wall calendar. Many times, bad speeches say little and what they do say are said poorly and delivered poorly.

That brings us to Netanyahu’s speech. It was powerful.

It was great. What made it so great? His delivery was good, but not necessarily fiery. There were no lines which will be recalled throughout history. Yet, this was an historical speech. It was timely. It established the right tone.

Netanyahu’s speech changed the tone of conversation and discussion. He proved that it is not the Jewish people who must excuse their actions. The State of Israel does not need to defend her existence.

Netanyahu was able to use a powerful word, “shame,” in such a way as to put the representatives of the hundred plus nations who just sat there during speeches from the President of Iran and other rogue dictators on the spot.

Shame on them for permitting “leaders” to question the Holocaust, just six decades after the event. Shame on them for permitting the denial of historic fact. Shame on them for bestowing honor on the dishonorable.

The best sources for history are first hand accounts and primary documents from the actual events. Netanyahu made his case with the primary minutes of the meeting in

1942 of Nazi leaders plotting the “Jewish Solution.” He also showed the blueprints for Auschwitz-Birkenau. What is more real than the blueprints which show the design and details of the horrific place which will forever be linked with evil?

The usual way to try to prove the existence of the Holocaust has been with pictures of Jewish victims. When Jews are shown in the pajama-uniforms of Auschwitz, the Holocaust doubters say that these are merely pictures of individuals in holding facilities or prisons. Sometimes, pictures of bodies stacked high are used. As there is no single picture of all six million Jewish victims, the Holocaust doubters then say that we know thousands of Jews were killed, just as millions of non-Jews who killed in the war.

Netanyahu took a different approach. He showed the actual German documents that have been preserved by successive German governments as a testimony to their commitment to never again have evil like that perpetrated by their government against the people. Netanyahu’s case: We do not need to rely on the testimony or the accounts of Jews. All civilized peoples recall the horror of the Holocaust. The Germans documented it and each German government since has preserved the original documents as testimony to the factual events. The message: All civilized people accept the truth of the Holocaust. If you do not accept the historic fact of the Holocaust, you are not civilized. If you permit others to take the lofty pulpit of the dais at the United Nations who are outside of the civilized society, you too become uncivilized.

Shame on those who speak. Shame on those who listen.

Wow! Netanyahu’s speech should be must seeing for all Jewish students in programs from Sunday schools through day schools. This speech which unfortunately took place during the middle of the work day and was not seen by most who were at work or school should be circulated on DVD’s to member families of all synagogues and organizations for viewing.

After Netanyahu, we do not need to apologize for our existence or the existence of the Jewish state. We do not need to prove the civilized character of our people or our state. We Jews are part of the civilized world. Those who question our right to exist are part of the uncivilized world and should be ashamed. Nobody ever said it better.

I got to thinking. Even my own children who have been raised from birth to love Israel and who have been to Israel numerous times, have never experienced some of the

truly momentous events in our Jewish history. They regularly see on television snippets from JFK’s inaugural where he guided the listeners to “ask not what their country could do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” I know my children have seen on the news and at other times the grainy pictures of FDR addressing Congress and the nation. Yet, my children have never heard the spectacular radio accounts of Jews spontaneously dancing in the streets of New York as the last votes were cast at the U.N. authorizing the partition of Palestine and authorizing a Jewish state. My children have never seen the footage of Ben Gurion declaring the independence of the Jewish state in May 1948. They never heard the melodic voice of Abba Eban giving voice to the Jewish people at the U.N. before the Six Day War. They have never seen footage of Golda Meir waiting on the tarmac of the airport outside Tel Aviv greeting her former enemy, the Egyptian President Sadat, as he descended from his plane seeking peace. They may have seen the picture of Rabbi Goren sounding the Shofar as the Jewish soldiers reached the Kotel in 1967 as that picture is so ubiquitous. However, they have never been moved by the film of events which have changed Jewish history forever and which are central to the evolution of Israel as we know it.

There is a need for a “Time-Life” history in film, photographs, and audio accounts of key events in Twentieth Century and Twenty-First Century Jewish history and the history of the State of Israel. The images and sounds are so moving, yet none of us have them to

show our children. They are being deprived the primary historical artifacts of the events which have led up to today’s Israel. We are denying them the power of the moments which have been captured on film. These images are moving. We have denied our children the moving experiences that we who are older have experienced first hand.

In the 1950’s, I recall going into every Jewish home in Los Angeles and seeing the set of encyclopedias sold at the local Ralph’s grocery stores on the shelves. With the first volume either free or only for $1, the purchase of this encyclopedia was seen as an easy way of bringing “culture” and knowledge into the home. I can foresee a DVD series of film of the events of modern Jewish and Israeli history becoming as omnipresent in Jewish homes today as the cheap encylopedias were 50 years ago. I believe that an affordable DVD series would bring the power of history into our Jewish homes. Our children never experienced David Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, or Moshe Dayan. A DVD series would bring home the reality of the history of Israel in a powerfully meaningful and effective way.

Highlighting one of the DVD’s should be Netanyahu’s speech for our children to witness firsthand. His words represent a call to action. We are not the ones to be ashamed. The ones who doubt our authenticity as a people with a right to Israel as our homeland are the ones who should experience the shame. Netanyahu hit a home run with this speech, a speech we should replay and remember long into the future.•

D

id you ever stop to imagine what life was like inside of Noah's ark? There were three floors; the middle floor was filled with a collection of the world's animals wild, domestic, and otherwise. Birds and critters of all shapes and sizes, vermin and an endless potpourri of creepy crawlers whose pesky descendants bear witness to their survival during that tempestuous period.

Then there was a floor of refuse. There was no recycling center, and no sewage system that I am aware of.

The humans had the top floor. Cramped in an inescapable living space was Noach, his three sons, their wives and one mother-in-law. I think the rest of the scenario can play clearly in our minds. Surely, it was far from easy.

What intrigues are the detailed architectural commands that Hashem gave Noach. Hashem details measurements and design for an ark that took 120 years to build! Why? Are there lessons to be learned from the design of the design of the ark? After all, Hashem promised that there will be no more floods. If there are no more floods, then there need not be any more arks. So what difference does it make how it was built. Obviously, there are inherent lessons we can learn from the design of the ark. Let's look at one.

Noach is told to build a window. It seems practical enough; after all sitting for an entire year can get awfully stuffy.

So Noach is commanded to build a window for breathing room. It is a little troubling. Does Noach need a command to add something so simple as a window? Does it make a difference whether or not he had a window? Did that command have to be incorporated into the heavenly plans for an ark that would endure the ravaging flood?

One of the hundreds of visitors was the Bluzhever Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Spira, whose entire family was wiped out during the Holocaust. He sat quietly, taking in the pain of the bereaved family. Finally, when it was time to say something, Rabbi Spira turned to the Rosh Yeshiva and spoke. "Your loss is terrible, but at least your son will have a living remnant, his child. He will also have a resting place and stone where the family can visit. I do not even know where any of my children who were killed by the Nazis are buried." Then he added, "yet somehow Hashem has given me the strength to rebuild my family and life." Those words truly helped console the Rosh Yeshiva.

Sometimes when we are locked in our little boxes, we, too, need a window. When we think our world is crumbling and that we are doomed to a fate that is too difficult to bear, Hashem tells us to make a window. Sometimes, in our frustrations we have to look across the globe, or even across the river to know that despite our difficulties, others must endure a more difficult fate. And when we realize that they can endure, whether it is an Og holding on the back of the ark, or struggling with those lost amongst the ruins, we can remember that life inside the ark is not so bad after all. •

ood deeds deserve good dividends, but there is one deed mentioned in this week's portion that is veiled in anonymity. However, its dividends lasted so forcefully that the impact was realized almost 500 years later.

The Torah tells us about a war that took place. Avram's nephew Lot was captured. The Torah tells us "Then there came the fugitive and told Abram, the Ivri, who dwelt in the plains of Mamre…" (Genesis 14:13) It obscures the name of the refugee and does not even directly state his message. The next verse, in a seemingly disjointed manner, tells us, "and Abram heard that his kinsman was taken captive, he armed his disciples who had been born in his house -- three hundred and eighteen -- and he pursued them as far as Dan" (ibid v.14).The Medrash tells us that the refugee was Og, a giant of a man who escaped an attack on his fellow giants. He informed Avram that his nephew was alive, albeit taken prisoner with malevolent intent. He figured that Avram would try to liberate Lot and be killed in battle. Og would then marry Sora. (Perhaps that is the reason that the Torah seems to separate what Avram heard from what the refugee told.) For this piece of disguised information, Og receives a seemingly disproportionate reward. He is granted not only longevity, as he lived until the final days of the Jews’ sojourn through the desert, but also the impact of his deed was so potent that Moshe was afraid to attack him before entering the Land of Canaan! Imagine.

Og lived for 470 years after the deed, and then Moshe had to be reassured that he need not fear his merits!

Rabbi Berel Zisman, one of the few remaining from his illustrious family of prominent Lubavitch Chasidim spent a portion of World War II in a concentration camp in Munich. After the war, he was allowed entry to the United States, but had to wait in the town of Bremerhaven for six weeks. During that time he decided to travel to BergenBelsen the notorious concentration camp which was transformed to a displaced person camp to visit a cousin who was there. Dozens of inmates came over to him with names of loved ones scattered across the free plains of the USA. They wanted to get them messages. Berel took their messages. itch Yeshiva in Crown Heights. Knowing no English, upon his arrival he asked a cousin to address postcards.

Each had a message written in Yiddish "My name is Berel Zisman. I have just arrived from Europe - and have regards from…"He filled in the blanks and ended the brief note on each card with, "for further information, I can be contacted at the Lubavitch Yeshiva, corner Bedford and Dean in Crown Heights."

Rabbi Zisman does not really now how many people received his cards, but one person who lived in a basement apartment on Hewes Street definitely did. When Rabbi Jacob Kamenecki, one of the United States' leading sages, came to the Lubavitch yeshiva looking for Berel Zisman, a war refugee who had arrived at the yeshiva only a week ago, no one knew why.

Berel was called out of the study hall and met the elderly man, filled him in on all the particulars about the status of his relative, and returned to his place. When the young man returned to his seat, he was shocked at the celebrity treatment he once again received. "You mean you don't know who that Rabbi was? He is the Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Voda'ath!" Berel shuddered, feeling terrible that he made the revered scholar visit him. A while later, he met the Rosh Yeshiva and approached him. "Rebbe, please forgive me, I had no intention to make you come to me to get regards. Had I known who you were I would surely have gone to your home and given the information to you in person!”

Reb Yaakov was astounded. He refused to accept the apology. "Heaven forbid! Do you realize what kind of solace I have hearing about the survival of my relative. I came to you, not only to hear the news, but to thank you, in person, for delivering it!"

Imagine. Avram was nearly 80 years old, he had no descendants, and the only link to the house of his father's family -- at least documented as a disciple of Avram's philosophies -- was Lot. Now even the whereabouts and future of that man were unknown. And when Og delivered the news of his whereabouts, perhaps Avram's hope for the future was rekindled. Perhaps his gratitude toward Og abounded. And though Og spoke one thing, and Avram heard another, the reward for the impact on Avram's peace of mind was amazingly powerful.

We often make light of actions and ramifications. The Torah tells us this week, in a saga that ends five books and some four hundred years later, that small tidings travel a very long distance. •

verybody makes jokes about Noah and his Ark. Bill Cosby has a whole routine on the subject (which I must confess is uncannily faithful to our commentaries' understanding).

Then there's the one about Noah being the first stock market manipulator in history -- he floated a company while the whole world was in liquidation!

Today as I am older and more sensitive to the feelings of fathers and children, of family and friends, those men have gone up much more in my estimation. They have become superheroes. After all they went through, to be able to live normal lives again, to marry or remarry, to bring children into this world, to carry on life, businesses, relationships, are mind boggling achievements.

The Rebbe saw Noah in a far more serious light. Noah was a survivor.

My own father was not in the camps but he is the only survivor of his entire family from Poland. Some years ago, he recorded his story and recently it was published in book form -- From Shedlitz to Safety: a Young Jew's Journey of Survival. We, his children, never knew half of what he went through. When I imagine him sitting as a teenage refugee in Shanghai, China and discovering that his entire family was wiped out and that he was left all alone in the world, I go numb. How did he continue?

How did he stay sane? How did he keep his faith? Thank G-d he did and he started a family all over again, otherwise I wouldn't be here to write these lines. My own father has become a superhero to me.

Noah was saved from the deluge of destruction that engulfed his world and his greatest contribution is that he set out to rebuild that world. We don't read about him sitting down and crying or wringing his hands in despair, although I'm sure he had his moments. The critical thing the Bible records is that after Noah emerged from his floating bunker he began the task of rebuilding a shattered world from scratch. He got busy and picked up the pieces and, slowly but surely, society was regenerated.

Only one generation ago a great flood swept over our world. The Nazi plan was for a Final Solution. Every Jew on earth was earmarked for destruction and the Nazis were already planning their Museum of the Extinct Jewish Race. Not one Jew was meant to survive.

So even those of us born after the war are also survivors. Even a Jewish child born this morning is a survivor -- because according to Hitler's plan, which tragically nearly succeeded, he or she was not meant to live.

This means that each of us, like Noah, has a moral duty to rebuild the Jewish world.

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, I prayed in a small shul in Crown Heights where every other man at the morning minyan (prayer quorum) bore a holy number on his arm. They were concentration camp inmates and the Germans tattooed those numbers onto their arms. Sadly, today, the ranks of those individuals have been greatly diminished. Every time one of them would roll up his shirt sleeve to put on tefillin, the number was revealed. They seemed to hardly notice it, as if it was nothing special, but to me they were heroes. Not only for surviving the hells of Auschwitz or Dachau but for keeping their faith intact, for still coming to shul, praying to G-d, wearing His tefillin.

Says the Rebbe, we all have that same responsibility -because we are all survivors.

Who will bring Jewish children into the world if not you? Who will study Torah if not you? Who will keep Shabbat? Who will keep the Jewish school afloat? Who will rebuild the Jewish world if not you and I and each and every one of us?

In the smaller country communities of South Africa, where I make my home, there are still small bands of dedicated Jews who come together in someone's home to make a minyan, or who serve as an ad hoc chevra kadisha to bury the Jewish dead according to our tradition. These are not rabbis, cantors or cheder teachers.

They are ordinary people. In the big city they would probably not be nearly as involved, but in their small town they know that if they don't do it nobody will.

We need that same conviction wherever we are.

Thank G-d for His mercies in that our world is, to a large degree, being rebuilt. Miraculously, the great centers of Jewish learning are flourishing today once more.

But far too many of our brothers and sisters are still outside the circle. Every one of us needs to participate.

We are all Noahs. Let us rebuild our world. •

“The righteous emulate their Creator,” say our sages.

I

f you want to know how to behave in a given situation, see what G-d does.

On the whole, G-d chooses to run His world in accordance with a series of unchanging (and thus predictable) behavior patterns—what we call “the laws of nature.” It would be just as “easy” for Him to rain down manna from heaven as to cause grain to grow and flour and water to bake into bread; but with the exception of one forty-year period in our history, G-d has consistently chosen to nourish us via natural bread from the earth rather than miracle bread from the heavens.

So we, too, manage our lives in accordance with the rules of nature. While we believe with complete faith that G-d is the sole provider of life and sustenance, we labor to construct the natural vehicles through which His providence may flow. We know that to be nourished by a piece of bread supposedly produced by human hands is no less a “miracle” than to be nourished by “bread” falling from the heavens; nevertheless, we do not sit around waiting for manna to rain down upon us, but devote hours, energy and talent—resources that could have been devoted to “holier,” more spiritual pursuits—to plowing, sowing, milling, kneading and baking, or to earning the money to pay others to produce our bread.

In the 12th chapter of Genesis, we find our model for this approach to life in the behavior of the first Jew, Abraham. G-d had commanded Abraham to take up residence in the Holy Land; but when shortly thereafter a famine swept through the land, Abraham journeyed to Egypt, where there was bread to be had. Approaching Egypt, a land notorious for its depravity, Abraham realizes that he is in mortal danger on account of the beauty of his wife, Sarah, and he tells her to say that she is his sister, lest he be killed by an Egyptian coveting her beauty.

The famine in the Holy Land and Abraham’s travails in Egypt are counted among the “Ten Tests” which established the depth and invincibility of his faith in G-d. At first glance, however, it would seem that Abraham “failed” these tests: he did not stay in the Holy Land, trusting that G-d would provide for him even under conditions of famine; he did not assume that if G-d desired that he live, no lust-maddened Egyptian could take his life.

In truth, however, a disavowal of the natural tools of life does not imply a greater faith in G-d. Indeed, to do so is to go against the divine desire that we live within the

natural world as G-d’s “partners in creation.” The true test of faith lies in how a person regards his natural activities.

Does he consider them the source of his achievements?

Or does he recognize that they are merely “garments” within which G-d enclothes and disguises His essentially supra-natural sustenance of our lives?

Abraham’s faith did not prevent him from going to Egypt when the natural sources of nourishment ceased to function in the Holy Land, or from resorting to connivance and deceit to ensure his safety when his life was threatened. Indeed, the fact that he could take these actions and experience their apparent success in bringing him material gain and, at the same time, relate to G-d as the sole source of his safety and enrichment, was the ultimate proof of his faith in G-d.

Joseph But G-d, on occasion, does perform “miracles”—events in which the cloak of consistency and predictability is swept away and His involvement in our lives stands denuded from the garments of nature. In this, too, we are enjoined to emulate our Creator: there are occasions in our lives that call for a “miraculous” response, for a mode of behavior that utterly disregards the dictates of nature and convention.

These, however, are the exception rather than the rule, to be employed under exceptional circumstances in our lives, or by exceptional individuals whose entire lives emulate the miraculous dimension of G-d’s relationship with our reality.

Such an individual was Abraham’s great-grandson, Joseph. When Joseph was incarcerated in an Egyptian prison and did a good turn for a fellow prisoner, the chief butler of Pharaoh, he availed himself of the opportunity to request of him: In three days’ time, Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your station.... But remember me when your situation is improved. Pray, do me a kindness and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and have me taken out from this house Joseph, however, is criticized for his behavior; indeed, he is punished for placing his trust in man rather than relying solely on G-d. “The chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him,” and he was left to languish for two more years in Pharaoh’s dungeon.

What for Abraham was desirable behavior and a demonstration of his faith in G-d, was a breach of faith for

Joseph. For Joseph belonged to that select group of righteous individuals whose mission in life is to emulate their Creator in the miraculous, rather than the natural, plane of His relationship with His creation.

The Many and the Few These two approaches to life were personified by two great Talmudic sages— Rabbi Ishmael and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. In the words of the Talmud: It is written: “And you shall gather your grain.” What does this come to teach us? But since it says, “This book of Torah shall not cease from your mouth [and you shall study it day and night],” I would have thought that one must take these words literally; comes the verse to teach us, “you shall gather your grain”—conduct yourself also in the ways of the world. These are the words of Rabbi Ishmael.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said: If a person plows in the plowing season, sows in the sowing season, reaps in the reaping season, threshes in the threshing season, and winnows when there is wind, what shall become of the Torah?

But when Israel does the will of the Almighty, their work is done by others, as it is written, “And strangers will stand and graze your sheep...”

The Talmud concludes: “Many did like Rabbi Ishmael, and succeeded; like Rabbi Shimon, and did not succeed.”

In every generation, a few elect “Josephs” rise to a state of utter aloofness from the ways and cares of the material world, exemplifying the truth that, in essence, there is literally “none else besides Him.” But for the vast majority of us, the path through life is the path blazed by Abraham: a path in which G-d clothes His involvement in our lives in the garments of nature and we employ the resources and norms of our physical existence as the implements of our relationship with Him. • Rabbi Simon Jacobson
