Watching the Playos:

The Changing Nature of Baseball, The Changing Nature of Society Robert J. Rome, Ph.D

I

grew up in the Westchester area of Los Angeles. I recall in 1958 sitting on the back fence at our home and witnessing a motorcade on Airport Boulevard following the arrival of the Dodgers for their first year of playing in Los Angeles. Sitting in open convertibles were Dodger stars such as Duke Snider and Johnny Podres and manager Walter Alston. It was quite a memorable experience for me as a young boy. This year, as I watched the baseball playoffs involving the Angels and Dodgers, I saw a type of baseball vastly different from the kind of baseball I recall from the 1950’s and early 60’s. Those days saw pitchers like Koufax or Drysdale most often pitching to the eighth or ninth innings. Those days saw the birth of the late reliever with Ron Peranowski (later a pitching coach) perfecting short relief. If the team was winning, you saw either a complete game or a game with 1-2 relievers at most. Those were also the days of the well-rounded general players. There were Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and the Duke. These players not only hit, but they could steal bases. And boy could they field! Duke Snider had such a renowned strong throwing arm that someone actually challenged him to attempt to throw the ball out of the Coliseum from the playing field where the Dodgers then played. During this year’s playoffs, arguably the best player on the Dodgers was removed in many games in late innings for a defensive player. Even the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez, who some would argue is the best player in baseball today, was removed for a pinch runner. The day of the allaround baseball player appears over. There are hitters who only come in to face right handed low-ball pitchers, while there are other hitters who are summoned to the plate to face high pitches either from the right or left. There are pinch runners for when there is one out and others for when there are two. There are specialists of all sorts, but not the generalist great player seen in the past. In one of this year’s playoff games, the winning team had nine pitchers! One pitcher came in to get a ground out and then was removed. Another pitcher came in for the sole purpose of walking the one batter he faced. Even the strong arms in the playoffs, pitchers capable of throwing complete games, were often gone by the end of the fifth inning, even when they held the opposition to three or less runs. Perhaps one of the reasons for the use of Steroids in recent years has been the pressure for certain players to

9

November 6, 2009

be as strong as possible in their particular areas of specialization. The homer hitter exists for just that purpose. There is much pressure for that player to become as strong as possible to be a threat to hit the ball out each time. Remember, Hank Aaron, the last non-steroid home run champ, never hit 50 home runs in a single season. He was known when playing just as much for his singles and doubles as his homers. But that was in the age of the “generalist.” We now live in the age of the “specialist.” This constant changing of pitchers and bench players today makes for a slower and more boring game. I am not the only one who longs for a new Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle. The legends of these baseball greats loom even larger in an age with no similar great generalists of the sport. Many have seen baseball as a metaphor for life. Each great novelist seems to feel compelled to write their Great American novel featuring baseball. Many of these novels are put on the movie screen. “A Field of Dreams” is seen as a metaphor for relationship between father and son centered around the baseball diamond. “The Natural” speaks to the indestructible talents inherent in some players (i.e., people) in our society. The rise of “specialists” in baseball and other sports parallels a rise in reliance on experts and expertise in other fields as well. The Orthopedic Surgeon now specializes in the hand, the back, the leg, or some other body part. There are pediatric neurologists who specialize only in seizures, while others specialize in other specific areas. We used to have pediatricians, internists, ob-gyn’s, or other generalists that we went to. We now consult a specialist for each type of pain we experience. The same is true in dentistry where we might travel to three or four different dental specialists to figure out the cause of a single condition. Most every one of these specialists has learned to see the problem of the patient almost exclusively from their own narrow perspective. The psychologist or psychiatrist treating Attention Deficit Disorder will diagnose this condition almost 100% of the time, while the psychiatrist who treats mental health disorders will often seen the same child as having an Anxiety Disorder. The Autism specialist will find this same child to have Autism. Just as in baseball where only a bunt specialist seems to know this component of the game, each specialist looks at only a small component of the person being treated. Virtually every field today has had an increase in specialists and a decrease in generalists. You have to go to a

separate tax expert for real estate transactions, a separate one for business, and yet a third for filing personal taxes. There are residential and business property real estate experts. Within the residential field, there are home experts, estate experts, condo experts, and income property experts, among others. Even cleaners specialize in shirts versus wedding dresses versus bedding. When you ask high school students today what they want to do for a career, they don’t just say “become a doctor or lawyer.” They often describe in detail a small, very specific field of specialization, such as becoming a pediatric kidney specialist dealing with transplants. Something has been lost. To be a good specialist, you first have to become a good generalist. The psychologist who deals with children with Autism, must first become a good psychologist in general, before then becoming a good expert with children. Only then does expertise in a specific area of dealing with children come into play. The attorney who fights in the Supreme Court on behalf of white collar criminals accused of widespread fraud must first become a good attorney and litigator before embarking on such as specialized practice. The trend toward specialization and away from generalization is neither good for baseball or for society. It is hard work to develop competency across numerous areas of a given discipline or field. Few seem willing today to become the well-rounded attorney or physician. Even house cleaning specialists have emerged with different expertise. You get a different person to clean your granite counters than to clean your floors, and yet a third person who specializes in cleaning your windows. We need to see people put the effort into learning

the broad base of skills of the larger profession before mastering a single area of expertise. With a return to the generalist, we may see again the emergence of a Sandy Koufax or a Warren Spahn. At one time in the 1950’s we saw Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, and Hank Aaron, among others, all playing at the same time. Today, we see only one or two players that can be mentioned in the same breath as these Hall of Famers. Similarly, we had pioneers in medicine in the areas of comprehensive cancer treatment or orthopedics, while we now have only the individual “body parts” specialists. We need to teach our children that the kind of specializations seen today in baseball resulting in the near continuous substitutions of players and the prolonging of the games which results has harmed the game. Similarly, we have to teach our children to think more broadly and to prepare themselves for the larger field rather than the narrow scope of expertise. Having general knowledge and skills must be seen as a prerequisite of a later choice to specialize. A good brain surgeon must first be a good surgeon, and even before that, must be a good physician. The combined generalist/specialist may require longer training and a different model for practice. But this reliance on so many specialists who only see conditions within a narrow scope of reference without regard to the larger picture has to go! Maybe next year, the baseball playoff games will use only 2 or 3 pitchers for each side and only 4-5 on the bench, and end before midnight. Then again, maybe before next year, the Messiah will come (G-d willing).

omething which is holy is also protected and, to a certain extent, hidden. The Holy of Holies, the innermost chamber of the Temple, was the most sacred place in the world. One way its holiness is expressed is through the fact that nobody could ever go there -- except the High Priest on Yom Kippur.

The ideal of modesty does not mean at all that the woman is hidden from society. According to the Sages, Sarah provides a key example of a woman who taught others and gave spiritual inspiration to the women of her time. Modesty is a fine value, but it is not taken to the extremes apparent in some societies.

Similarly, and more familiar to us, the Torah scroll is holy. Usually, it is kept behind a curtain in the Ark. When the Torah scroll is taken out of the Ark this is felt to be a special occasion, and everyone in the synagogue stands up. It is still within a mantle, and only when it is brought to the bimah is the mantle removed. If the Torah scroll is carried to another location it is usually wrapped in a tallit, as an extra covering expressing its sanctity.

Later on the parshah speaks of the spiritual insight of Sarah, which was in fact greater than that of Abraham. G-d says to Abraham: "Listen to the voice of Sarah, and do everything that she tells you." Rashi comments that this means: "Listen to the voice of the Divine Spirit within her. This teaches us that Abraham was second to Sarah in power of prophecy."

Our parshah, Vayeira, tells us something about womanhood: that womanhood is sacred, and has great spiritual power. And it also tells us that feminine modesty is a profound aspect of human life, making a woman beloved to her husband.

The Torah thus highlights several qualities of our greatgreat-grandmother Sarah: modesty, inner beauty, power to inspire others, and holiness. These are qualities which she has bequeathed to her daughters through the generations. Dr. Tali Loewenthal is Lecturer in Jewish Spirituality at University College London, director of the Chabad Research Unit, and author of Communicating the Infinite: The Emergence of the Habad School.

The parshah begins by telling us about three angels who visit Abraham. They are disguised as travelers. They ask Abraham: "Where is Sarah your wife?" He answers: "She is in the tent." Rashi, the great Bible commentator, discloses a level of meaning within these words which might not be immediately apparent. As we learn elsewhere in the Torah, Sarah is a very beautiful woman. By affirming that she is in the tent, rather than standing in all her beauty before the three visiting men, there is a subtle hint to the idea that Sarah is modest. Why should the angels wish to hint at Sarah's modesty? Rashi says "in order to make her beloved to her husband." Modesty expresses inner beauty and hints at the deep spirituality and holiness which is the inner nature of womanhood. In certain ways the woman represents the Shechinah, the Divine Presence in the world. The quality of the feminine is the point where the physical and the sacred join. The angels have come to tell Abraham and Sarah that Sarah will bear a child. Perhaps the hint to her modesty, thus making her yet more beloved to her husband, is part of their mission.

Modesty is an ideal which is central in Jewish life. It affects not only clothes, but also speech and behavior. As defined by Jewish law, modesty concerns men as well as women. But in popular consciousness, it is specially relevant to the woman. Modesty expresses the inner beauty and also spiritual power of womanhood.

I

n what must be one of the greatest transitional scenes in the entire Biblical narrative, this week the Torah transposes us from the gracious home of Avraham in one scene and to the evil city of S'dom in the next. Avraham's home was one of kindness. It was a home where the master of the house would run to greet nomadic wanderers, and invite them into his abode only three days after a bris milah! It was a home in which Sarah had opened a door in every direction, ensuring that there was an unrestricted invitation to any wayfarer, no matter which direction he or she came from. The scene switches to S'dom, a city in which kindness and charity were unheard of. A city in which a damsel who committed the terrible crime of feeding a pauper, was smeared with honey and set out for the bees. Sdom was a city where visitors who had the audacity to ask for overnight lodging were treated to a special type of hospitality. They were placed in beds, and then, if they were too short for the beds, their limbs were tortuously stretched to fit the bed; if they were larger than the beds their limbs were chopped off. How does the Torah make the transition from the world of kindness and charity to the world of evil? The Parsha tells us the story of three angels who visited Avraham. Each had a mission. Rashi tells us, "one to announce to Sarah the birth of a son, one to overthrow Sodom, and one to cure Abraham." You see, three were needed as one angel does not carry out two commissions. "Raphael," explains Rashi, "who healed Abraham went on to rescue Lot, as healing and saving may be one mission." And so the scene moves from Avraham in Eilonai Mamrei to Lot in S'dom, where the angels posing again as wayfarers were graciously invited. They saved the hospitable Lot and destroyed the rest of the city. I have a simple question. Why did the angel who was sent to destroy S'dom make a stop at Avraham's home? Two angels could have gone to Avraham's home, one to heal Avraham and the other to inform Sora of the good news. The third could have gone directly to S'dom and waited there for the others to catch up. Why make a detour to Avraham? Traditionally, young children who start learning Talmud, are introduced to Tractate Bava Metzia in general and the chapter Eilu M'tziyos in particular. The tractate deals with property law and emphasizes respect for other people's possessions. Eilu M'tziyos stresses the laws of returning lost items and the responsibilities of a finder of those objects. Some wanted the boys to learn about the blessings, but Rav Moshe Feinstein insisted that the custom not be changed. He wanted to imbue the youngsters of the enormous responsibilities that they have to their fellow man. One cannot be a Jew only in shul where he can sway, pray,

20

November 6, 2009

and recite blessings, but one must also be also be a Jew in the outside world, where the tests of honesty arise each day. I heard the story of one of those youngsters, who found his way off the beaten yeshiva path. His college-years search for spirituality found him studying with a yogi in Bombay, India who railed against Western comforts and derided the culture of materialism. He preached peace, love, and harmony while decrying selfishness and greed. The young man was enamored with his master's vociferous objections to Western society, until he was together with him on a Bombay street. A wallet lay on the ground. There was cash and credit cards sticking out from it. It was clearly owned by an American tourist. The Yogi picked it up and put it in his sarong. "But it may belong to someone," protested his young charge. "It is a gift from the gods," he answered, "heaven meant it for us . . . ." The young man's protests fell on deaf ears. At that moment, the words of his Rabbi back in fifth grade rang in his ears. "These are the items that must be announced for return; any item with an identifying sign . .”

Meeting Justice - Meeting Kindness by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

He was stirred by truth of his traditions, and the purity of his past. He left the Yogi and the wallet, and eventually returned to a Torah life. It is easy to rail against others. It is easy to talk about loose morals and unethical behavior. It's even easy to destroy Sdom. But Hashem did not let the angels do just that. He told them all to them first visit Avraham. He wanted them to see what kindness really means. See an old man run to greet total strangers. See a 90-year-old woman knead dough to bake you fresh bread. Meet the man who will plead for mercy on behalf of S'dom. And then, and only then can you mete the punishment that they truly deserve. Because without studying the good, we cannot understand the true flaws of the bad. Without watching Abraham commit true kindness, we should not watch the inhabitants of Sdom get their due. •

The other day I watched the most unbelievable video. It was footage from a train platform in Australia. A young mother was fussing with her baby, protecting him from the strong wind. Then, in a split second, as she let go of the stroller to fix her belt, a gust of wind pushes the stroller towards the tracks. The mother and other bystanders rush to catch the moving stroller but can't. It topples over the platform, into the tracks, the very moment a train is passing by. You watch the mother reach over, her arm getting hit by the train, miraculously not falling in herself. Then you see everyone on the platform, their hands covering their mouths, horrified that this young baby was just killed before their eyes. But he wasn't. Somehow, unbelievably so, this baby survived. With the exception of a scratch on his forehead. I watched this video over and over again. I couldn't believe the blatant miracle. It gave me such hope and encouragement. How could someone watch this video and doubt whether we have a Creator that runs this world? Today I again saw the hand of the Creator, as He directs the world in His unfathomable way. But this time with the opposite result.

in the corner. And I wonder why I thought that a messy room was really so terrible that it was worth screaming at my kids over. Now I sit here waiting for them to get home from school so that I can tell them how much I love them. And I just pray that in those few hours between now and when they come home, that I don't forget how I feel right now. I don't think in terms of if they come home, but when they come home. And I get it. We have to think like that to make it through the day. But even with that naïve certainty of when they come home, how will I respond? They will have homework to do, dinner to eat, baths to take. And somewhere along the way I will most likely get annoyed, overwhelmed and very possibly lose my cool. The spilled soup will seem like the greatest of tragedies along with the misplaced homework which has actually caused me in the past to scream aloud, "Why me???" Perspective. I am not saying anything new. Every tragedy that comes close to our lives shakes us up. It is that wake-up call to appreciate what we have. But it is not enough when it is temporary. Why do I wonder what will come of this miracle baby and not focus on what will be of my life?

The worst kind. The kind that we react to by pronouncing, Baruch dayan ha'emet, "Blessed is the true Judge." This morning I found out that a little three-year-old girl was killed in Jerusalem as she got off her school van. This girl was the daughter of a friend I had when I lived there. This woman already knew tragedy, having lost her own mother as a young girl. Her baby girl was named after her beloved mother. I am writing this as I try to process this loss. As I try to understand how and why these things happen. They do not make sense. But who says they are supposed to? When I watched the video of the miracle baby, I remember saying to my husband that this kid better grow up to be something unbelievably special. After all, with your life saved like that, you better make something of it. I even showed it to my children so they could watch a true miracle before their eyes. Now I sit with tears streaming down my face and think about my friend. I think about the loss of her baby girl, her only daughter. I look at the picture of the medics working on her with the slightest view of a pink backpack

Why do I make plans for the future without really contemplating that every moment I breathe is a true miracle? Why do I not live consciously with the true recognition that I have no certainty or security of what will be? All I have is right now. All I can truly know is right now. But do I live right now? I am usually too busy regretting the past or worrying about the future. The fact that I have a present is truly a present. And I better make sure I use it well. The mother of the miracle baby will no doubt live her life with a constant awareness of what could have been and gratefulness for the blessing she was given. My friend will unfortunately mourn the loss of her baby girl for the rest of her life, an awareness that will always be present. And me? I hope to work on myself so that every minute can count, for we only count our minutes when we realize they are limited. And I pray that the Judge of all judges takes us out of this darkness and brings us true clarity with the ultimate gift of Moshiach.•

PARSHAS CHAYEI SARAH

A

vraham sent his servant Eliezer on quite a difficult mission. Find a shidduch for not only the world’s most eligible bachelor, but for its most spiritual. Yitzchak was designated by Hashem to be offered as a sacrifice. He never left the land that would one day become Israel. And he was raised by the founders of Judaism, Avraham and Sarah. It isn’t easy to find a match for such a special individual. Avraham made Eliezer promise that he would not bring back a Cannanite woman for his son. Instead, Eliezer was to search among Avraham’s family in Charan and find a suitable maiden for the sacrosanct young man. Laden with gifts, Eliezer left for Charan. As a selection criteria he devised a sure-fire approach. "Avraham," he thought, "is the epitome of kindness and hospitality. Surely Avraham would want those qualities prevalent in his daughter-in-law." He prayed to Hashem to guide him. "When I arrive in Charan, I will ask a maiden for water. The maiden," he thought, "who replies by saying, ‘drink, and I shall even give your camels to drink, [and drawing water for camels who had just completed a long desert journey is no simple task]’ must be the one who is designated for Yitzchak." (Genesis 24:13-14) The exact scenario that had been prayed for actually occurred. As Eliezer stood by the well in Charan, Rivka walked toward it. The posuk tells us that as soon as Eliezer watched Rivka begin to draw water, he raced toward her and asked her the pre-determined questions. The gracious response led to our destiny. The Medrash questions why Eliezer raced forward to greet Rivka. It answers that as Rivka went to draw water, Eliezer saw a miraculous event. As she lowered her bucket, the waters in the well rose to greet her. Therefore Eliezer ran to greet this maiden, as this was a spiritual individual who must truly be Yitzchak’s bashert. Yet, if such a miraculous event occurred, why did Eliezer continue with his pre-planned act? Why did he ask Rivka for water and wait until she responded by offering drinks to both him and his entourage? Also, when Eliezer discusses the entire scenario with Rivka’s family and tells them why he decided upon Rivka, he repeats the story of Rivka’s grace and hospitality. Yet Eliezer fails to mention

of the miraculous incident of the rising waters. In the Slobodka Yeshiva, nothing was as important as the study of Torah. Students who excelled in their diligence and ability were viewed in awe. But the greatest reverence was saved for the founder of the Yeshiva, Rabbi Nosson Zvi Finkel, the Alter of Slobodka (1849-1927). With his brilliance, humility and great character, he set the tone of the entire Yeshiva. One day two students were discussing a new young man, Isaac Sher, who had just entered the Yeshiva. "Isaac is a true ilui," said one. "He knows the entire Shas and Shulchan Aruch, by heart." After the other boy listened as the first extolled the intellectual virtues of Isaac Sher he added meekly, "I had a conversation with him the other day. He is truly a geshmahkeh mentch." "Geshmahkeh mentch?" questioned the first student in a scoffing tone. "Is that all you can say about him? We are talking about the greatest mind ever to step foot in this

The Rising Waters of Menchlichkeit Yeshiva and all you can say that he is a decent and kind fellow? I see you don’t appreciate a person’s true value." With that the disgusted student began to walk away, but the towering presence of the Alter of Slobodka blocked his path. "No," he said firmly as he motioned to the humiliated student. "That young man is correct. Reb Isaac’s greatest quality is that he is a geshmahkeh mentch." The Alter eventually took Reb Isaac Sher as his son-inlaw. Eliezer was emotionally impressed by the miraculous rising waters; however, he composed himself. Miracles were not the criteria needed to become Yitzchak’s wife. He knew that character transcends any miracle or genius. In finding the wife of a patriarch and mother of a nation he did not look for Rivka the miracle worker. He looked, and found, the geshmahkeh mentch. • by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

VICTORY IN VANCOUVER Still in the clouds from having soared to new heights in their astounding triumph over YULA at the Migdal Ohr Classic at Staples Center, the Valley Torah High School varsity basketball team was soon airborne, flying across the border to Canada to take on an international challenge and participate in the Bodwell Tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Valley Torah Wolfpack continued its winning ways capturing the gold by winning every one of the five games in the tournament competition including the championship game against Bodwell High School. Hometown fans, having witnessed VTHS defeating St. John’s, Pacific Torah Institute, King David and Collingwood High Schools, filled the Bodwell High School to capacity and with as much noise as you can imagine cheered the home team to encourage them to victory. But in a close and well played game Valley Torah prevailed 76-72. While in Vancouver, the Wolfpack and their coaches also visited a Jewish old age home where they helped celebrate the 102nd birthday of one of the residents. “The players were fantastic,” said Wolfpack Coach Motty Meisels. “Everyone gave 110% in everything they did from davening to dribbling to defending” In the 6 games they’ve played so far this season VTHS has scored an average of 82 points per game and have kept the opposition to just 50 points per game. The tournament was made possible by the generous support of friends and neighbors of VTHS from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale.

I

s it a sin to argue with G-d? Is it sacrilegious to question the Divine? Well, Abraham did it. Not for himself, but on behalf of the people of Sodom, whom G-d had decided to destroy because of their wickedness. Abraham was the paragon of chesed, the personification of kindness and compassion. He grappled with the Almighty, attempting to negotiate a stay of execution for the inhabitants of the notorious cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. "Will you destroy the righteous with the wicked?" he asks G-d. "Will the judge of all the earth not do justice?" "If there are 50 righteous men, will you spare them? 45? 40... 30... 20... 10?" In the end, Abraham cannot find even a minyan of righteous men in the cities and he gives up. And then the verse reads, “V'Avraham shov l'mkomo” -- "And Abraham went back to his place." Having failed in his valiant attempt, he acknowledges defeat and retreats to his corner. But there is also an alternative interpretation to those last words. And Abraham went back to his place can also be understood to mean that he went back to his ways, to his custom. And what custom is that? To defend the underdog, to look out for the needy and to help those in trouble, even if they are not the most righteous of people. Abraham refused to become disillusioned in defeat. He went right back to his ways, even though this particular attempt did not meet with success. What happens when we lose? We hurt, we sulk, and we give up. It didn't work, it's no use. It's futile, why bother? Just throw in the towel. Not Abraham. Abraham stuck to his principles. He may have experienced a setback, but he would still champion the cause of justice. He would still speak out for those in peril. And he would still take his case to the highest authority in the universe, G-d Almighty Himself.

Abraham teaches us not to lose faith, not to deviate from our chosen path or our sincerely held convictions. If we believe it is the right thing to do, then it is right even if there is no reward in sight. If it is right, then stick to it, no matter the outcome. One of my favorite cartoon characters is good old Charlie Brown in Peanuts. In one strip that sticks in my memory there is a storm raging outside and Charlie Brown is determined to go out to fly his kite. His friends tell him he must be crazy to attempt flying a kite in this weather, it'll be destroyed by the wind in no time. But in the last frame we see Charlie, resolutely marching out the door, his kite firmly tucked under his arm, and the caption reads, "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." Do we believe in our principles of faith because of expediency? Are we virtuous because we believe it is the way to the good life? Are we waiting for the big payoff for our good behavior? What happens when we don't see it? Do we become frustrated, disillusioned and angry at G-d? Some people become religious for the wrong reasons. They are looking for some magical solution to their problems in life. And when the problems don't disappear as quickly or as magically as they expected, they give up their religious lifestyle. It didn't work; I'm outta here. Virtue is its own reward. Sleeping better at night because our conscience is clear is also part of the deal. Or, in the words of the Sages, "the reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah." Our founding father reminds us that a Jew's gotta do what a Jew's gotta do, regardless of the outcome. Whether we see the fruits of our labors or not, if it's the right thing to do, then carry on doing it. May we all be true children of Abraham. •

SKS GEARING UP FOR PESACH When do factories start preparing for Pesach? Two months before Pesach? Three? In practice, SKS starts its Pesach kashrus preparations right after Simchas Torah! Kashrus supervisors gathered in the offices of SKS, Israel, on the night after Simchas Torah to receive updates and instructions regarding Pesach kashrus supervision. Why start so early? The answer lies in the great demand for kosher-forPassover products. SKS supervises the production of raw materials that go into many different foods, and its level of kashrus is widely accepted and greatly in demand. The chocolate bar you eat next Pesach may contain sugar and flavorings that were produced in December under the strict supervision of SKS. Today’s food industry uses many additives, and for a food to be certified as kosher for Passover every single ingredient must be strictly supervised. SKS mashgichim left Israel the day after Simchas Torah, to get to work. After all, Pesach is coming!
