I was listening to one show in particular when a caller named John unleashed a torrent of anti-Semitic accusations against the “Jewish Senator.” Unfortunately, John’s outburst was not an isolated incident. AND THE WINNER FOR THE WORST CASE OF MANNERS AND LACK OF RESPECT FOR 2009…
W
e live in a society of deteriorating manners and a frequent lack of respect toward you as a person. We no longer see men opening doors for women. We don’t frequently see common courtesies any more on the road. Two drivers vie for the same parking space and seem willing to crash into one another rather than yield to the other driver. Children don’t seem to respect their elders, especially their teachers. Parents yell at and insult their own children in public. Congregants bad mouth Rabbis. We do seem to live in a world where we no longer acknowledge that our neighbors are worthy of courtesy and respect. There is a practice of many businesses and charities which seem to have gone well the beyond the limits of acceptable practice. These groups are deserving recipients of recognition for the worst manners and behavior and least amount of respect shown to others. We all get phone calls from charities for contributions at disturbing hours. It is hard to eat dinner without frequent interruptions. Sometimes, the calls occur at even more offensive times. We often get calls at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings from New York-based charities that don’t seem to recognize that the 818 area code is in a different time zone. Having the whole family awakened from the ringing of a phone well before 7:00 a.m. on a Sunday is clearly an act of discourtesy. Even worse: All of these calls seem to have a 5 to 10-second delay before a live person is on the other end. You get awakened and have to immediately answer the phone call out of deep sleep in hopes that the two to three rings have not already awakened our children only to find that the call was apparently dialed by a machine and no one is on the other side of the call. While you keep saying “hello, hello,” finally a “human being” on the other side realizes that the call has been answered and comes on the line. You can question how the offending person has the nerve to call at 6:30 in the morning. There is no apology, simply the spiel about the charity and why you must donate. Machine dialing calls at 6:30 in the morning without even being on the line when the callee is awakened by the call…well, that certainly would win the award for the most offensive action in this increasingly offensive world! A number of years back, I was picking up a friend of one of my daughters from out of state who was at the home of a second friend. When I pulled up to the home, I searched for a parking space and parked the car. My

daughter was shocked. She said, “just honk the horn.” I responded that I was not just going to honk the horn on a Beverly Hills street. This would not be nice to the family who was graciously hosting my daughter’s friend. My daughter responded, “nobody does that anymore.” I replied, “I do.” Sure enough when I came to the front door and knocked, those who answered were shocked to see someone at the door. They would have seemed to prefer someone just honking the horn. The chivalry that had lasted for centuries was dead. The message seemed to be: Honk the horn, because you will be seen as an alien from some other world if you bother to come to the door. On our street, the honking begins well before 7:00 a.m. each day as carpools and buses begin to come to pick up students for the many schools attended by children on our street. There can be no sleeping as every 5 minutes or so, until well after 8:00 a.m. horns blare out announcing the arrival of another disrespectful driver of a carpool. Remember all the old rules: Give our seat to the elderly or disabled person; respect your teachers; give honor and esteem to the Rabbi of the community; the car on the left yields to the car on the right, etc. All the rules of the past do not seem to apply. Fights break out in line at the grocery stores. Drivers don’t let other cars merge into traffic. Men don’t even get out of their cars to pick up a date. Insulting seems preferable to compliments. The world is filled with disrespect. There is often no Shalom Bayit (family peace). There is only boorish behavior by so many. Not only do the old rules go unobserved. A new generation is growing up in a rule-less society. They don’t even know what is expected of them. Students don’t only seem to want to get an A. They want to embarrass the other students in the class. The recognition of another student in class is seen as a lack of recognition of your own child. We are now living in an either/or society and not a “both” society. Only one can win. The other must lose, in this increasingly obnoxious world in which we find ourselves. Neighbors not only do not invite neighbors to their parties, they make all kinds of noise until their equally offensive neighbor calls the cops on them. I had a great teacher who not only taught me the subject of the class, but reinforced rules of respect that have stayed with me now over 30 years later. Rabbi Moshe Zucker was an old-country Rabbi. In the

1930’s, realizing the perils that were in store for the Jews of Europe, he came to the United States where he taught future Rabbis in the New World. Rabbi Zucker would share stories of courtesy and respect in the actions of others. He would also model proper behavior through his own actions. Rabbi Zucker once shared a story about exemplary behavior of one of his students in class. He told of how this student noticed that when the Rabbi removed his Fedora hat one day, there was no yarmulke underneath, as there usually was. As Professor Zucker was teaching Talmud, this student briefly waited for the right opportunity. At an appropriate time, he compared what the Rabbi was teaching to a passage in the Rambam (Maimonides) where the Rambam raised the issue as to whether a man must wear a head covering inside of a building. Rabbi Zucker realized that the student was making a reference to his own situation as he felt his head and realized he had no head covering. Rabbi Zucker expressed pride in the student. The student did not want to risk embarrassing the Rabbi. He even chose a reference which might permit the lack of head covering. Rabbi Zucker gave this story as an example of how we must respect one another. Rabbi Zucker also taught his students through his own exemplary behavior toward others, especially toward his students. I came to class for the semester final. Rabbi Zucker was going to give us an oral exam on the pages of Gemora that we had studied. This was last final among the six classes I had. I studied all night, but never reviewed one passage that I had barely understood when we went over it in class. Sure enough, Rabbi Zucker called on me to explain that very passage. I tried. But I was having great difficulty. Rabbi Zucker saw the difficulty I was experiencing.
Rather than embarrass me, he acknowledged that I seemed somewhat tired. He suggested I come to his office in two days where after I could be quizzed by him at that time. He even suggested one of the commentaries on the passage which will be particularly helpful. Unlike some teachers we have had who seem to love to make fun of poorly prepared students, Rabbi Zucker did not take joy from ridiculing students. He got to know each of his students. He greatly respected his students and showed this respect. He knew what a student was capable of achieving. When a student was not living up to his capabilities, Rabbi Zucker recognized that this was not typical. He encouraged students to do their best, even if it meant not grading his or her final and giving the student another chance. Because Rabbi Zucker gave me another chance, I learned to give deserving students I have taught a second chance. I have learned from Rabbi Zucker’s story how to say things so as not to embarrass others. From the Rabbi’s example, I realize that we must often take special steps to guarantee that we treat others with the greatest respect, that we treat all people as if they were created in G-d’s image, for they were. When we treat all others in a respectful way, we acknowledge the value of each person. We help to create the world G-d surely intended. Within this better world, we enhance our own existence and value. I will continue to go to the door and not just honk. I will give students a second chance. I will try to go out of my way to make sure others are not embarrassed. I know I will make errors, but my hope is that through the example I try to set, my children and students will learn from me just as I have learned from my parents and teachers. And we will live in a better world! •

Bais Chaya Mushka, located in the heart of Los Angeles, was founded to provide an exemplary well rounded Judaic and general academic education for Jewish girls; regardless of their background, or financial capability. While many of our students come from diverse backgrounds, we have geared our educational policies to be inclusive and individualized. We encourage our students to utilize their individual potential and strive for excellence. Faculty members are chosen for their ability as well as desire to teach. They are role models in both their behavior and dedication to their profession. Education is the foundation of the Jewish people. Bais Chaya Mushka, is one of the few schools in the greater Los Angeles area that constantly opens its doors to every single Jewish family. The thought that there may be a child, in need of a Jewish Education, whose needs we cannot meet, spurs us urgently to expand our programs until there is no child lacking a Jewish Education. Since our inception, we have strived to expand and better our school. Thank G-d, our school is growing and we must do more to meet the needs of every individual student. A famous Chassidic idiom says, “If good is good, then better is better”. Since 1988 we have lived with this motto. As much as our school has grown since 1988, as successful and established as we are today, there is always more that we can, must and will do to make it even better. Our school is an independent entity and financially self-supporting. Every penny we receive comes from kind people such as you and is directly spent on our dear students’ education. At this time we desperately turn to you to help enhance our exceptional program and maintain these doors open wide for every Jewish girl and family. Please join us this January 31, 2010 when we will host our annual “Say ‘Chai’ to Bais Chaya Mushka’s phone-a-thon. The success of the phone-a-thon depends entirely on dedicated volunteers and donors who are willing to give their time and donations to help benefit our school. Bais Chaya Mushka’s accomplishment would not be possible without your continued generous financial support. **** Please help us, help you! In providing our students with the best Jewish education, we are insuring the survival of the Jewish people! *****

Basically, there are two ways to move something from here to there. You can either take the direct route, as in moving object C in a straight line from point A to point B. Or you can take the roundabout route, as in flying from New York to Seattle via Houston, or zagging an e-mail fourteen times around the globe to get it to the guy in the next cubicle. Now let's look at the story of Joseph and his brothers. The purpose of the exercise, most everyone agrees, was to move Jacob and the seventy members of his household from Hebron, Canaan to the land of Egypt (about 200 miles as the crow flies across the Sinai Peninsula). There, in Egypt, the first family of Jews would experience the state of galut (exile, displacement, submission to alien rule) foretold to their grandfather Abraham at the "Covenant Between the Pieces." The experience would prepare them for the next few thousand years of Jewish history, most of which would similarly transpire amidst the unique challenges and opportunities of galut. And this is how G-d (who certainly has the direct route option available to Him) made it happen: He made Jacob fall in love with Rachel. He then arranged it that Jacob be tricked into marrying Leah instead (in the end, Jacob gets to marry Rachel too). An abiding jealousy lingers between Joseph (Rachel's son and his father's most beloved) and the sons of Leah (older, numerous, and quite upset about the situation). Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers and languishes in a dungeon for a dozen years, before becoming viceroy of Egypt -- the effective ruler of the most powerful nation on earth. A hunger in the Land of Canaan compels the brothers to seek food in Egypt and be subjected to the cruel machinations of the Egyptian ruler. Only it's not really an Egyptian (it's Joseph) and he's not really being cruel (he's teaching them a lesson in brotherly love). Joseph pushes them to the limit, to the point when they must choose between giving up Benjamin (Rachel's other son) and standing up to the man who has the entire might of Egypt behind him. The brothers, led by Judah, refuse to be intimidated and confront the "Egyptian." At this point, Joseph reveals his identity and invites them all to settle in Egypt. Of course, your e-mail got to your colleague's desk at the end. To some, that would be the only thing that matters. But the more inquisitive among us will ask: why did it have to travel via Tallahassee, Bangkok, Kiev and Pretoria to get there? But first we should ask: What is galut? If we understood what galut is, perhaps we'll also understand why we got there the way that we did. True achievement is possible only under conditions of absolute freedom. A person must be in full control of his or her life, free of any and all constraints and hindrances. But being "in control" breeds complacency and spiritual laziness; only when challenged and oppressed, only when compelled to resist and battle "overpowering" circumstances, does the human being rise to and actualize his or her true potential. This is the paradox of galut. For galut to work it must be real -- we must experience external forces, alien to our nature and mission in life, constricting us, challenging us, forcing us to draw on our deepest reserves of fortitude and commitment. But for galut to work it must be fake. We must be free in essence, however enslaving the "experience" of galut may be. And so it was when galut began, with the "oppression" of Israel's children by Egypt's ruler. As the brothers stood before Joseph, they experienced the walls of Egyptian power closing in on them, depriving them of their freedom, making them dependent upon it for their very sustenance, challenging their most basic loyalties to each other. At the same time, a truth hovered just beyond the surface reality -- the truth that it's all a sham, a sham of their own making, in which at any moment the mask will fall and the "ruler of Egypt" be revealed as their own flesh and blood. And so it is with the daily challenges we face as a people and as individuals. These are very real -- real in that they exact from us the very best that's in us. At the same time they are utterly fake -- contrivances of our own making, projections of our own illusions, shadows of our own light. We need only stand up to them with the confidence of our inherent power and freedom, and the mask will invariably fall away. • By Yanki Tauber

PRO-ISRAEL DRAMA TO OPEN IN LOS ANGELES Atpol Productions is proud to announce the Los Angeles opening of A TINY PIECE OF LAND, a new drama by Joni Browne-Walders and Mel Weiser. The play will open at the Pico Playhouse on April 7, 2010 for a three-week run.
ful, humorous and moving new play. The play had its initial production in May, 2009, at the Oregon Stage Works, in Ashland, Oregon, under the direction of Peter Alzado. Mr. Weiser will direct the current production.
A TINY PIECE OF LAND brings a long-missing Israeli perspective to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Through the personal losses and triumphs of an ordinary Jewish family, forced with thousands of other settlers in 2005 from their Gaza settlement homes, the play presents a powerful, but hopeful, view of Israeli hardship and courage in the face of worldwide misunderstanding and condemnation.
Mel Weiser, author of CRY, TIGER! (optioned for Broadway) and numerous other plays, also wrote The Trespasser (Avon Books), Within the Web (Dell) and Nick Nolte: Caught in the Act (Momentum Books), which won the Irwin Award as "Best Celebrity Book of 1999." Weiser has directed over 40 plays, from Broadway through regional and dinner theatres. Ms. Browne-Walders, theatre arts graduate of UCLA, has written numerous plays herself, including My Name is Evie Goldstein, Waiting for the Coast Guard and Home Furnishings, which have been produced at Playwright's Theatre and Theatre Artists Studio.
All too often, Palestinian suffering is the lens through which much of the world views the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. And viewed this way, Israel is accused of being the brutal aggressor. This is a terrible perversion of truth; it distorts historical fact and obstructs a solution to this seemingly endless Middle East conundrum. Playwrights Browne-Walders and Weiser decided to set the record straight, and that is why they have written this power-

n August 2000, Senator Joe Lieberman was selected as the nominee for Vice President of the United States of American by Al Gore. The entire nation buzzed about Senator Lieberman's selection because his was the first Jewish nominee for the second highest office of the United States.
GRAND OPENING!
Every Talk Radio show I tuned into that day was covering the Jewish angle of this story. I was listening to one show in particular when a caller named John unleashed a torrent of anti-Semitic accusations against the “Jewish Senator.” Unfortunately, John’s outburst was not an isolated incident. Most of the accusations were straight out of the notorious, early 20th century, Protocols of Zion. Based on evidence repeatedly corroborated by British, German, Ukrainian, Polish and Russian sources, the Protocols are an anti-Semitic forgery and religious and political hoax. John quoted obscure passages from the Talmud to demonize Jews and Judaism. The word Talmud literally means “study” and is a record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, customs, and history, compiled over several centuries after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE. I was so frustrated by Jim’s ignorance I called into the show and after a little convincing was moved up in the cue and had my time to speak. I asked John if he was basing his information on his personal research of the Talmud. When he said “yes,” and that he had carefully read the entire Talmud, I asked him how long this took him. “About 8 hours,” was his reply. I challenged his claim by pointing out that if you read one page of the Talmud a day it would take 14 years to complete this massive work. The Talk Show host couldn’t refrain from laughing and John didn’t know what to say. I then proceed to demonstrate that the passages John had quoted were taken out of context or non-existent fabrications. For example, anti-Semites try to paint Judaism as cruel religion because of the biblical passage, “an eye for and eye.” The Talmud discusses this passage and rejects a literal interpretation and unanimously concludes that this statement is a metaphor for fair monetary compensation for damages. In fact, there is no historical evidence that Jews ever understood or enforced this passage literally. The Protocols of Zion is a scam and John, along with his fellow anti-Semites, chose to believe the lies contained within it. They surrendered their critical thinking skills for the sake of perpetuating their hatred of Jews. They epitomized the slogan, “my mind is made up so don’t confuse me with the facts.” The irony is, that the Talmud is one of the greatest examples of critical thinking. Its record of thousands of discussions among the Jewish sages demonstrates that they did not want to leave any stone unturned before they came to a conclusion. There is a timely lesson to be learned from this ancient book. The best way to avoid being mislead or deceived is to use your critical thinking skills and check your facts before you make any decision. • Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz is the founder and director of Jews for Judaism International. aakov had passed from this world. His twelve sons were left alone in a foreign world, and it was time for reconciliation. The brothers were afraid that with Yaakov's passing Yoseph would avenge them for selling him to Egypt. So they sent the sons of Yaakov's concubine Bilhah, with a message. "Your father commanded before his death saying, 'Thus shall you tell Yoseph, please, kindly forgive your brothers terrible deed and their sin for they have done you evil." Yoseph assures them that he has no intent for retribution. In fact, he promises to sustain the brothers and their families.
After one strike, the batter, Joe Dugan, called time and approached his well-respected manager. "Judge," the player suggested, "the rookie at third base is playing well behind the bag. If I drop a bunt, we'll squeeze in the winning run!" The judge looked sternly at the ball player. He was stunned at the mere suggestion. "Mr. Dugan," he exclaimed, "You will do no such thing. Either we will score our runs honorably or not at all!"
The 1929 Boston Braves were owned by Judge Emil E.
The Sha'ar Bas Rabim explains that though Yaakov never explicitly gave the command to lie, he did issue a game plan for the future. Before he blessed the brothers, he gathered them together with the words, "gather yourselves together," (Genesis 49:1-2). The charge for the future was unity, and whatever it took to achieve unity amongst the brothers was the core of Yaakov's wishes. The brothers understood how to play the game of life and how their father Yaakov would have wanted it. Peace and harmony were the only ultimate goal. That is what all parents want for their children and that is what the objective of the twelve brothers was. It took a squeeze play, but harmony was achieved. Had Yaakov been
Fuchs. Judge Fuchs cared basically for the financial management and legal affairs of the team, but the depressed economy and his unwillingness to put up with the difficult and expensive Roger Hornsby, left the team without a manager.
alive to manage the situation he may have also chosen the exact game plan. Yaakov, with the guidance of his mother and a skillful deception, had his father give him the blessings that were intended for Esav.
Judge Fuchs, an experienced adjudicator, read the rulebook and surrounded himself with a few cronies who would help him guide the team. Then he literally brought his swivel chair into the dugout and began to manage the team.
My grandfather, Reb Yaakov Kamenetzky, of blessed memory, once told me that attaining the highest level of any attribute require knows when to violate it! And to that end, Avraham the stalwart of kindness and compassion, was ready to sacrifice his own son at God's command, surely an act of seeming brutality. Yaakov, whose virtue is truth, knew when it was proper to mislead. And Yaakov's sons who understood the virtue of Yaakov's truth, also understood his quest for peace. They learned, very well, that though sometimes it is time to swing away, this was the time to drop a gentle bunt. •
The Talmud in Yevamos tells us that Yaakov would not have suspected Yoseph to be vengeful and he never issued the stated command. The Talmud extrapolates from this incident that one may twist the truth for the sake of peace and harmony. Yet it seems that there was a bit more than twisting truth. It sems that there was an overt lie. And why would they use Yaakov's name in this untruth? If he did not suspect Yoseph as Rashi explains, then weren't they insulting him by saying, "your father commanded"?
PARSHAS VAYECHI Squeeze Play
It was late in the summer of that dismal season, and the team had just been on a losing streak. Miraculously, however, it seemed that the down streak was about to end. The game was tied in the bottom of the ninth and the bases were loaded. The Braves were batting and Judge Fuchs gave the orders to swing away.

A
title usually reflects the theme of the subject matter. "Genesis" is about the beginning of the world, "Exodus" is about the Jews leaving Egypt. Whether it is a book, film or lecture series, the title should convey some idea of the content it describes. Which is why the title of this week's parshah seems highly inappropriate. Vayechi means "And He Lived." The name derives from the parshah's opening line, "And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years..." The parshah, however, goes on to tell us not about Jacob's life, but rather about his death: his last will and testament to his children, his passing, his funeral, and his interment in Hebron in the Holy Land. Why would a parshah that concentrates on a person's last days on earth, his deathbed instructions and his burial be entitled "And He Lived?" The answer, say our sages, is that we are not discussing biological organisms, but Jews. And the test of true life for a Jew is whether he lived an authentic, consistent Jewish life -- for life. Did he falter before the finish line, or was he faithful to his value system until the end? How do we know that Jacob did indeed live, in the fullest sense of the word? That his was a genuine, G-dly life? When we see that he remains true to those ideals until his dying day. Only then can we say with certainty that his life was truly alive; that his was a Vayechi life. The fact that Jacob died a righteous man validated his entire life-span, establishing it as a true life, alive and real from beginning to end. There are individuals who have their eight minutes of fame, who shine briefly and impress the world only to fade away and leave us disappointedly watching so much unfulfilled potential dissipate into thin air. Others are longer lasting, but don't quite go all the way. Like a certain man named Yochanon who -- the Talmud tells us -- served as high priest in the Holy Temple for 80 years and then went off the rails. Very scary stuff! No wonder Hillel, in Ethics of the Fathers, warns us not to trust ourselves morally until the day we die.
Complacency is dangerous. There are no guarantees. One must constantly "live" -- i.e., grow and attempt to improve oneself -- lest one falter before the finish line. I will never forget my experience with a very fine man who was remarkably loyal to the company he worked for. For 45 years he was with the same group, totally and absolutely dedicated. Then he reached the age of compulsory retirement. Suddenly he took ill. The doctors had no real diagnosis. But he got sicker and sicker until he became incapacitated and eventually died. To this day, nobody knows what he died from. But those who knew him well understood that once he left the workplace to which he had devoted his entire adult life, he had nothing left to live for. Sadly, he had no other interests. His work was his life, and without his work there was no life left. It is psychologically sound to take up a hobby, learn to play golf or develop other interests outside of work. A Jew, though, should ideally start studying Torah. Go to classes, read a stimulating book. Studying and sharpening the mind is good for the brain. Recent medical research confirms that it can even delay the onset of Alzheimer's. Most importantly, a person must have something to live for. Find new areas of stimulation. Discover, dream, aspire higher. Life must be lived with purpose and vigor. That's why at the end of this week's parsha, which also concludes the Book of Genesis, the congregation and Torah reader will proclaim Chazak, chazak v'nischazek -"Be strong, be strong, and we will all be strengthened." Because the tendency when we finish a book is to take a breather before we pick up the next one. Such is human nature. But a book of the Torah is not just any book. Torah is not just history or biography. Torah is our source of life, and we dare not ever take a breather from life. "Chazak" energizes us to carry on immediately. And so we do. The very same afternoon we open the Book of Exodus and continue the learning cycle without interruption. Truth is consistent, from beginning to end. May our lives be blessed to be truly alive -- with authenticity, faithfulness and eternal fulfillment. Amen. •

by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky
I
t was a test for the ages. The mighty Pharaoh commanded the midwives Shifra and Puah, known to us as Yocheved and her daughter Miriam, to kill all the boys born to Hebrew mothers. Not only did they ignore the edict, they countered it by nourishing the newborns with pacifying words and comforting amenities food and drink.. The Midrash tells us that they cared for the sick and unhealthy babies as well, nourishing them with prayers, and Hashem did not ignore their actions. But the verses need some explanation. First the Torah tells us, "And G-d rewarded the midwives, and the nation flourished and prospered." Only then does it add, "And it was as the midwives feared Hashem, and He made for them houses." Rashi explains that both midwives were rewarded for their efforts with more than physical houses. They were rewarded with houses of Kohanim and kings. Hashem rewarded them well with generations of kings and priests, Divine attributes that are perpetuated through the species of humans that the midwives actually saved male Jewish children! A kohain can only be the son of a Kohain, and a King can only be a male! But there seems to be an interruption in the order of the verses. The words "and the nation flourished” seem out of context. In fact, Rashi is bothered by the obvious question and explains the verses as follows. "And G-d rewarded the midwives," and what was the reward? "He made for them houses." The words "and the nation flourished" are part of the narrative, an historical footnote inserted into the middle of the episode of heroism and reward. But the simple, juxtaposed text needs clarification. Perhaps there is a way to explain the historical insert More than 10 years ago, my brother, Reb Zvi and his wife had a beautiful little baby boy. He was truly beautiful. And he was truly little. Five weeks premature and only two-and-a-half pounds. For a while it was touch and go. The prayers of a community and thousands of friends and relatives pulsed the support systems that sustained the child's short breaths and the parents' deep hopes. For nearly two months the baby endured in the neo-natal unit under the care of the most prestigious

doctors and devoted nurses that the city of Chicago had to offer. After two grueling months of prayers, incubators, and devoted healthcare, the baby arrived home healthy. The joy and gratitude to Hashem was overwhelming, but the young father did not forget his gratitude and appreciation to the mortal messengers, the entire medical and nursing staff, who worked arduously, day and night, to help insure the newborn's health. He wanted to express his appreciation in a very special way. He searched gift shops and bookstores for a proper memento to show his appreciation, but he could not come up with an appropriate gift. A few days after the baby was brought home, the young father mentioned his dilemma to his Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Eliyahu Svei, Dean of the Philadelphia Yeshiva. "The nurses don't want perfume, and the doctors don't need pens," said Rabbi Svei. What they want to see is the continued growth and health of your child. Every year, on his birthday, bring the child to the hospital and let the staff share in the joy of his growth and success! That will be the most meaningful gift you can offer!" The Rosh Yeshiva explained: Before the Torah mentions an additional reward bestowed upon the midwives, it alludes to the greater reward that they truly appreciated. Their efforts towards Jewish perpetuity were not in vain. The nation prospered. The young babies, whom they worked so diligently to sustain, grew up. And they married, and they flourished. All the midwives wanted was the propagation of their nation. And that was their first reward. The gift of Houses of the Priesthood and the Houses of Royalty were an added bonus which was Hashem was pleased to deliver. But as far as the midwives were concerned, the greatest reward was the joy in seeing that the children they delivered flourished, and that the nation prospered and grew. All the risks were worth it for that knowledge alone. And so the Torah tells us, "and Hashem made good for the midwives, and the nation grew and flourished." For them, that was the greatest reward. The rest was just icing on the just desserts. •

Superior Quality Amazing Beefy Taste
Our Wagyu beef is raised hormone and antibiotic free. Fed only the finest quality grain, containing absolutely no animal by-products. Strict ration and growth-rate guidelines are influenced by Japanese cattle-raising culture. The calves are carefully introduced to grain rations over a 90 day period then moved to select Iowa feedlots for 350 to 400 days in an all-natural, sheltered, low stress environment. The careful monitoring of every stage of the herd's growth provides a consistency in marblization and flavor. Cows raised in an all-natural environment with wide-open pastures, lush green grass, and fresh water makes for healthier beef. The ranch uses a gradual program of seven distinct feed rations to achieve perfect marblization and flavor. All calves are identified and tracked from birth to assure humane treatment and a strict adherence to our all natural approach.
