When everyone is somewhat quietly engrossed in their food, I return to my room to try to wake myself up, thinking all the while: "It is 5:30 in the morning and I am being treated like a waitress." The rest of the morning doesn't usually go any better, as I have already allowed a big gray cloud of selfishness and impatience to settle on the home—and it is contagious.

y children wake up with the sun, no matter how early that might be. A month ago, that meant 5:30 a.m., now it means 6:12 a.m. I always considered myself a morning person, I really did, but there is a stark contrast between waking up to the silent sunrise and the gentle singing of the birds and being abruptly torn out of my dreams by the boisterous voices of a three-year-old, twoyear-old and one-year-old.

"Mommy, I want cornflakes!" You are still under your covers and you already want cornflakes?!?!

"Mommy, I woke up! Look, look, also the baby woke up. Mommy!!!"

But I didn't wake up! Who told you that it was time for you to wake up?

"Mama, Mama!

Nnnnnda, nnnnnnda!" Oh, you are so cute, but it is soooo early.

Extricating myself from the bed is not easy, but it is only after this small victory that the real battle begins.

Awoken suddenly and plunged into breaking up fights and dealing with spilled bags of flour before both of my eyes are fully open isn't exactly the recipe for my best mood. So, I am faced with the three most adorable creatures in the entire world and they are waiting to be smiled upon and warmly hugged. And I? I don't want to smile, I don't want to even speak. I just want to brush my teeth in peace without someone asking me if I am using mint or strawberry toothpaste and if the mint burns my tongue. I would like to say the morning blessings and drink a cup of tea while quietly pondering the day ahead of me and who I would like to become through it.

So, on a really bad day, the morning looks something like this – I mumble a fake "good morning" and, with a

frown on my face, I start portioning grapes into three bowls and doling out cornflakes. If any child dare complain about their allotted spoon or change their order from with milk to without, I snap at him or her and declare that "This is what there is, take it or leave it!"

We have all joined a competition to see who can prove that their needs are more important than everyone else's.

On one particularly dreary day I asked myself how things had become like this. After all, I am a rather cheerful person and I understand children's vital need for a compassionate, affectionate mother. The conclusion I arrived at was simple: They are waking me up so suddenly that my body is being woken up far before my soul. My soul knows how to react to petty bickering and spilled milk, but my body does not!

So, this was a nice new excuse I had.

I tried it on for size for a few days, easily excusing my obnoxious behavior and lack of cheer. After all, this is an ill-fated body that has woken up before its soul counterpart.

But every time I repeated this new line of mine, it sounded weaker and weaker. After all, the first words a Jew says upon regaining consciousness in the morning are the words of the prayer "Modeh Ani": "I thank You, my King, for returning my soul to me – How great is Your faith in me!" icated to our Creator, acknowledging: You have given me another day in this world; I am already indebted to You. The conclusion of this short prayer is a bit puzzling: "How great is Your faith in me." What faith? Don't we mean to say that our faith in Him is great? The answer is what gives us the strength to get out of bed and make something special out of our day: If G‑d woke you up, it means He has faith that you are going to do something worthwhile today. After all of yesterday's mistakes, He believes in your ability to pick yourself up and be productive today. The Creator of the world Himself has called you to duty; He must believe in you!

With this in mind, it was becoming more and more difficult to convince myself that my soul was sleeping in. In fact, it became ridiculous – if anyone would choose to be lazy and lie in bed for another hour or two, it would not be the soul part of this duo. More importantly, if I am being given my soul back, it is a sign that G‑d believes in my ability to overcome the propensity to wake up cranky. That being the case, I had to come up with a better excuse or, rather, a better plan.

A friend recently shared her thoughts on New Year changes with me – "It is all about decisions. Why do I arrive on time to a meeting on Monday and five minutes late the next day? Because on Monday I decided I was going to be on time and on Tuesday, I made a note somewhere in the deep folds of my brain that it is O.K. to be five minutes late.

So, really, I just have to decide on Wednesday that I am going to be on time. And that I will not lose my temper with my husband for not taking out the garbage and that I will not eat three chocolate bars for lunch instead of a salad and sandwich. We can change only what we decide to change. It doesn't make it easy, but it makes it possible."

Children need warmth almost more than they need oxygen In Psalms, King David writes, "Who will go up the mountain of G‑d? Only one with clean hands and a pure heart…" The Slonimer Rebbe expounds on this mountain-climbing parable.

He explains that there are two prerequisites for success if a person is going to climb a huge mountain: The first is the unwavering decision that no matter what, he will fight his way to the top. He must be ready to undergo any kind of challenge to reach his goal. The second is that he has to believe wholeheartedly that he will succeed in the end. It is not a question of if he will climb that mountain to its peak; rather it is only a question of how and when. So long as any fraction of a doubt lives in his heart, he will not be able to overcome the hurdles that lie in his way.

"Climbing the mountain of G‑d" means climbing the mountains that G‑d has implanted in our day, our week, our month, our life. There are slightly smaller ones like annoying co-workers and there are enormous, terrifyingly steep ones like chronic, debilitating illnesses, but all of them are there for us to champion over them, becoming stronger through the climbing. To triumph, we need to make the decision that we are in this fight until the end and to have the unmovable faith that victory will be ours.

I took this theory out for a test ride. A few days ago, sunup found me deeply lost in a nonsensical dream, beautifully void of any plot or conflict. And then suddenly, it was gone. My cheek was glued to my pillow and a two-year-old boy was standing at the doorway saying, in a sweet and gentle voice, "I woke up. Can you change my diaper?"

I quickly moved my lips and forced out: "Modeh Ani – I thank You, G‑d…" thinking of the incredible privilege it is to be the mother of this precious toddler. Before letting a moment pass, I made an unwavering decision that I do not have to get up this exact second, but when I do haul myself up to a vertical position, I will be happy, cheerful and pleasant. If I am in this situation it means that I can rise to the challenge and I will. I was mentally prepared – my children need warmth almost more than they need oxygen and I am determined to give it to them. Even at 5:30 a.m.

The new tactic worked. After a couple moans and position flips, I was up and so was my mood. Lifting my son, dirty diaper and all, I hugged him with all my heart. Each child was greeted with a jovial smile, backrub, and a croaky morning voice exclaiming how happy I was to see them. The morning started off great and continued even better.

We have just begun a New Year, giving us a chance to renew and to be who we truly want to be. What we will achieve this year is reliant on what we decide to achieve this year. This is the opportune time for us to ask for Divine aid in accomplishing those goals so that we can blaze onward and upward with the certainty that we will prevail. • Rivka Zahava is a graduate of the Hadassa School of Optometry.

How would you feel?

That is a question asked by a wide-ranging group of inquisitors ranging from kindergarten teachers chiding their immature charges, to philosophy professors lecturing to disciples about the worlds of the theoretical. Its validity sets the tone from issues that vary from the golden rule to admonitions at the supper table. And at first glance it seems that the Torah uses the maxim to mitigate a deficiency in our very own human nature.

"Do not taunt or oppress a ger because you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Exodus 22:20). According to most commentators, the verse refers to the ger -- a convert to Judaism. Others comment however, that it also applies to any newcomer, be it to a neighborhood, a synagogue, or a school. Rashi explains that the Torah forewarns the Jewish nation from being cocky toward anyone who would join our people. "After all," Rashi expounds, "the stranger can easily remind us of our since-forgotten experience in Egypt, where we, too, were strangers."

However, something bothers me. The Torah's set of values is pure and unmitigated by personal partiality. So let us ask. Does it truly matter that we were once strangers? Is not it inherently wrong to taunt a newcomer? Shouldn't the Torah just say, "Do not taunt a newcomer? It is morally wrong!" Why is there even a mention of our Egyptian experience? Had we gone directly from Jacob's home to a settled life in the land of Israel, would we then be allowed to taunt newcomers? Of course not! Our years of servitude should not influence the morality of taunting others! So why does the Torah consider our bad experience a factor?

Dr. Norman Blumenthal has published extensively about the unique experience of Holocaust survivors' children.

Without revealing actual details, he related a case history of a young man whose father had escaped from a Nazi concentration camp at the age of 16 years old. The fugitive did not hide in the forest or in a barn, rather he joined a group of gentile partisans. For the duration of the war, he lived with them, ate with them, and killed Nazis with them. Still, the courageous young man never gave up his convictions and feelings of Judaism.

On that day his father, by then a very successful executive who was very active in the American Jewish community, turned to him and said. "Son, now the easy life is over. Just like me, now you must learn what it takes to survive amongst the gentiles!" He sent the young teen to a university in the southern part of the United States where Jews were as rare as snow. Within months, the young man, mercilessly taunted in a foreign environment, suffered a nervous breakdown. It took years of therapy to undo the shambles.

Perhaps we can understand the posuk in a new homiletic light. The sages declare that our experience in Egypt was very necessary, albeit uncomfortable, one to say the least. Under the duress of affliction we fortified our faith. Under the pressure of ridicule we cemented our resolve. Under the strain of duress we built families and sustained our identity. And perhaps it was that experience that laid the ability to endure far-reaching suffering, tests of faith that were only surpassed by the tests of time.

And now enter the convert John Doe who hails from a corporate office in West Virginia and has made a conscious, comfortable decision to join the ranks of Moses' men. Our first reaction may just be to have him bear the test of the Jew. Like bootcamp in Fort Bragg, or beasting at West Point, we may have the urge even a compulsion to put Mr. Doe through the rigors of our oppression. After all, that is the stuff of which we are made. We may want to taunt and tease because "we were slaves in a foreign land." The Torah tells us not to do so. "Do not taunt or oppress a ger because you were strangers in a he land of Egypt." Do not impose your difficult experiences in life on others that are newcomers to your present situation. It is easy to say, "such men are made from sterner stuff" and proceed to harangue those who would join us. That should not be. Life has a personal trainer for every individual, and each soul has a particular program mapped out by the Almighty. Jews from birth may have had to suffer in Egypt, while converts have other issues to deal with. One's particular experience may not be fodder for the next person. Do not use your encounters as the standard for the entire world. One cannot view the world from the rear view mirror of his personal experience. • Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

yberspace, outer space, inner space. Genome maps, globalization, going to Mars. Smart cards, smart bombs, stem cells and cell phones. There is no denying it: we live in a new age. Science fiction has become scientific fact. And the question is asked: In this new world order, with science and technology changing the way we live, is religion still relevant? Do we still need to subscribe to an ancient and seemingly long-obsolete code of laws when we are so much further advanced than our ancestors?

This question reminds me of little old Hymie Levy of London who somehow found himself attending a cocktail party in the company of aristocracy. Poor Hymie was completely out of place mingling with the lords and ladies of British royalty and high society.

One Duchess was so irritated by this ordinary Jew’s presence that she confronted him directly. Oozing sarcasm, in her finest elocution, she let on to Hymie, "Did you know that my family traces its lineage back to the very people who were personally present at the signing of the Magna Carta!" Hymie Levy was unfazed. He gave a little shrug of his shoulders and whispered straight into the ear of Her Haughtiness, "Un mein Zayde Moishe vos poisonally present by de giving of de Tzen Commendments!"

Have the Ten Commandments passed their "sell by" date? Are faith and doubt, murder, adultery, thievery, lying and jealousy out of fashion? Notwithstanding all our marvellous medical and scientific developments, has human nature itself really changed? Are not the very same moral issues that faced our ancestors still challenging our own generation?

Whether it's an ox cart or a Mercedes, road rage or courteous coexistence is still a choice we must make. Looking after aged parents is not a new problem. Whether it was Adam and Eve or Michael and Sheryl, the grass somehow always seems greener on the other side. For some inexplicable reason, the other guy's wife, house, horse or Porsche still seem more attractive and desirable than our own.

The very same issues dealt with in the Bible -- sibling rivalry, jealous partners, and even murder -- are still the stuff of newspaper headlines today. So what else is new? Has anything changed? Yes, today we have astronauts and space stations and laser beams and laptops, but the basic issues and choices human beings must face remain identical. Once upon a time, the question was "do I hit him with my club or slice him up with my sword?"

Today the question is "do I call up the nuclear submarines or send in the guided missiles?"

Technology has developed in leaps and bounds. But the core issues, the basic moral dilemmas have not changed one iota. We still struggle with knowing the difference between right and wrong, moral or immoral, ethical or sneaky, and not even the most souped-up computer on earth is able to answer those questions for us.

Science and technology can do wonders for humankind. But they can also blow us all to kingdom come faster than Attila the Hun could have ever imagined. Science and technology answer How and What. They do not address the question of Why. Why are we here in the first place? Why should I be nice to my neighbour? Why should my life be nobler than my pet Dobermans? Science and technology have unravelled many mysteries that puzzled us for centuries. But they have not answered a single moral question. Only Torah addresses the moral minefield. And those issues are perhaps more pressing today than ever before in history.

Torah is truth and truth is eternal. Scenarios come and go. Lifestyles change with the geography. The storylines are different but the gut level issues are all too familiar. If we ever needed religion -- or in our language, Torah -- we need it equally today and maybe more so. May we continue to find moral guidance and clarity in the eternal truths of our holy and eternal Torah. Amen. •

Rabbi Meir said: When the Jews stood before Sinai to receive the Torah, G-d said to them: "I swear, I will not give you the Torah unless you provide worthy guarantors who will assure that you will observe its laws."

The Jews declared, "Our children will serve as our guarantors!"

"They truly are worthy guarantors," G-d replied. "Because of them I will give the Torah." (Midrash Rabba, Song of Songs 1:4) Of the many childish qualities which set apart the "maturity challenged" youth from their adult counterparts, two are very stark and blatant.

1) A child's entire focus is on the here and now. The past is a non-existent bygone, and the future—an even more non-existent dream. The younger the child, the more nonexistent is all but the present.

For example: On Sunday morning, the average adult wakes up and thinks about his goals for the day ahead—be they taking care of responsibilities or chores, or indulging some desires and hobbies which are reserved for weekends.

Only after creating some semblance of a plan does the day begin in earnest.

“Yesterday” is code word for “completely irrelevant past”; “tomorrow” is code word for “utterly irrelevant future”…

A child, on the other hand, wakes up and his first thought is: "What do I do now? Do I jump on Mom's head to wake her up? Or can I more wisely utilize Mom's sleep time by climbing the china closet to purloin some of the sweets she's hidden there?" The day ahead is completely irrelevant; all that matters is living in the moment.

This is also why every child-raising book speaks of the importance of immediate consequences – positive or negative – for youngsters' actions. This is for two reasons: a) the warning of a future [i.e. non-existent] reward or punishment will not impact what the child will do in the [very real] present. b) If the consequence is delayed, the child can't comprehend why he's receiving a very real punishment/reward for an abstract act which has been relegated to the annals of immaterial history.

Interestingly, I've noticed that young children refer to any prior date as "yesterday," and anything which will occur in the future, no matter how distant, is part of "tomorrow."

How far in the past or future is unimportant; "yesterday" is code word for "completely irrelevant past", and "tomorrow" is code word for "utterly irrelevant future"…

2) Every child considers himself to be the very cog around which the world revolves; the sole purpose of

every G-d-created being is to serve him. Every game and latest gadget was invented with him in mind, and how dare Mom and Dad – who were also put on Earth to serve him – deny him his birthright! And when they do capitulate to his whimpering and moaning and buy the toy, the nerve of them to suggest that he share it with a sibling!

The importance of global upheavals and momentous scientific discoveries pale in comparison to a lollypop. If it doesn't affect him, it just doesn't matter.

This is why children must be trained to feel and express gratitude. Not because they are naturally unappreciative, but because they fail to understand why, for example, they must be grateful to parents who are just performing their duty.

Thanks is due to a creature who has a life and aspirations of its own who selflessly chooses to forgo his own benefit to help another. This certainly does not apply to the parent whose life's purpose is to cater to his every wish. Thanking a parent is akin to showing appreciation to the school bus which transports him to school!

How much more would each of us accomplish if we were childishly eager to utilize the present moment to its utmostThese two childish qualities clearly have serious downsides.

Thankfully, people mature—for living in a world wherein people remained exclusively focused on themselves without consideration for others would be unimaginable. And the human would still be living in caves if he lacked the capacity to plan for the future. However, there is much to be learned from the child's perspective.

"Do not say 'When I will have free time I will study,' for perhaps you will never have free time" (Ethics 2:4). How much more would each of us accomplish if we were childishly eager to utilize the present moment to its utmost, instead of delaying important goals for an imaginary future? Furthermore, how many people's ambitions are hampered because they dwell in the non-existent past—frightened into inaction by past failures, or lacking motivation because they rest on the laurels of prior achievements?

"Every person is obligated to say, 'The world was created for me'" (Sanhedrin 37a). You are not an insignificant cosmic speck; you are the reason why the world was created. G-d Himself waits for you to fulfill the purpose of creation by studying some more Torah and observing yet another mitzvah.

Perhaps this is why G-d enthusiastically accepted the children as guarantors for the Torah. The message is plain: Torah is intended for "childish" people who realize t h a t (1) there's no time like the present, and (2) you are the one chosen to do it!

What is Livescan Fingerprinting?

Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening.

Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states.

However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. mong the items that were to be included in the building of the Tabernacle was acacia wood. And though there is no acacia wood in the Sinai Desert, Rashi tells us that 210 years before the exodus, on the journey to Egypt, Yaakov (Jacob) brought acacia trees to be planted in Egypt. He knew that one day the Jews would be liberated and would need a sanctuary in their sojourn. So he prepared wood. Yaakov had not seen his son for 22 years, yet mind you while going to see Yoseph, he brought the material needed for a structure, that was to be built years in the future! What prompted Yaakov to think that way? Was there nothing else to bring to Egypt? Why wasn't he worried with the needs of the present? After all, 70 souls were entering a new land and culture. I am sure there were more pertinent things to bring than wood.

On a visit to Congregation Toras Chaim of Hewlett, NY, Rabbi Paysach Krohn told a wonderful story.

Ponovez Yeshiva in Bnai Beraq is one of the most distinguished Yeshivos in the world. A number of years ago, at the beginning of a semester, a young boy from Switzerland who applied there was denied entry. The Rosh Yeshiva (Dean) told him to come back in a few years, his level of study was not advanced enough for the Yeshiva, and he also was a bit too young.

The boy said he understood, but he wanted to speak to the Rebbitzen, the widow of the founder and late Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovez, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahanamen, of blessed memory. The Yeshiva administration was a bit surprised: Rav Kahanamen had passed away a number of years prior, and the young man did not claim to know the Rebbitzen. More important, she had no role in the admission process. Nevertheless, the young man was shown the Rebbitzen's apartment.

After a few moments, the boy emerged, and the Rebbitzen asked to speak with the Rosh Yeshiva. It took less than a few minutes, for the Rosh Yeshiva to emerge and motion the young student waiting outside of the Rebbitzen's apartment.

"Welcome to Ponevezer Yeshiva," the Rosh Yeshiva heartily declared. "We have decided to accept you wholeheartedly."

The boy smiled while many of the students and others who gathered outside the apartment were baffled. "What

could have influenced the decision?" they wondered.

The young man solved the mystery for the students who had gathered near the Rebbitzen's apartment.

"When I was seven years old, one summer my mother and I vacationed at a Swiss mountain resort."

Coincidentally, the Ponovezer Rav z'l was in Switzerland for the summer and checked in to the only kosher hotel in the area - the one we were at! The problem was, the only available room was on the upper floor, and it was hard for the Rav to walk up and down. My mother heard about the problem and immediately offered to switch our room on the first floor, with his.

After thanking her profusely, the Rav called my mother and me into his new room. "I want to thank you, Mrs. Schwartz," he said. "I understand that when on vacation it is hard to move rooms, but more so I also want to express appreciation to your son. I'd like to buy him a toy in a gift shop. What would he like?"

"I told the Rav that I did not want a toy, I did not want any prize. I did not even want a few coins. All I wanted is to become a student one day in the Ponovez Yeshiva. The Rav smiled and said that he would accept me whenever I felt I was ready. Immediately, the Rav took out a pen and paper and wrote the note that I handed to the Rebbitzen today. Frankly, I never even read it. All I know is that the vision of my youth was fulfilled today."

Upon descending to Egypt, Yaakov Avinu knew that redemption would be a long way off. He also understood that one day there would be a Mishkan for his children.

For without it, the exodus would be meaningless. Yaakov realized that a home for spirituality would be the key to Israel's survival. In Braishis, after crossing a river, Yaakov worries about little things he left behind and returns to retrieve them. He worried about the small things that were dear to his children. He worried about the memories of the past. Here, Yaakov worries about what he needs to build the future.

There were flourishing Jewish communities in the early years of American Jewish immigration. The communities that had the vision to bring the wood to build a Mishkan - the home for Torah -- are still vibrant and flourishing.

For with the vision for spirituality the Jewish people will always have the spirituality for vision. •

It was Friday afternoon; he was a young American, visiting the Kotel for the first time. By the way he dressed and acted, I was sure that he would consent to putting on tefillin. I was usually very successful with this type of youth, but no matter what I would say, he would not agree.

I tried my assortment of tested approaches one after the other, but to no avail. No matter what I said, he refused.

First, I tried reason. No luck! Emotion. He didn't budge!

Humor? No, he was not going to give in no matter what.

I was truly surprised. With years of experience in sizing up visitors, I could almost always tell an agreeable Jew, but it was as if he had made a promise to himself and he was not going to break it.

As I wrestled with him trying all the best arguments, an old man kept interrupting me, insisting on telling a story.

“A story? At a time like this?” I thought. “For sure the kid was going to slip away while this old man would go on with some tale,” but he insisted. I gently held on to the tip of the boy's sleeve to keep him from slipping away as the old man began. But as soon as he started, I could see there was no need. He wasn't going anywhere.

The story began, “Tomorrow is my anniversary. It will be forty-four years tomorrow that I was liberated from the death camp.” He spoke softly, almost casually. It took a moment or two to realize the depth from which he spoke. His English was perfect, which also seemed to diminish his authenticity, as if a thick Yiddish or European accent was necessary for the story to be true.

“There were 8,000 of us that went in there together, and I was one of thirty-five who survived. Only thirty-five of us….” He paused looking back into that darkness. “I weighed 88 pounds when I got out.”

“The day of the liberation, I found myself in the Camp museum. The room was filled with exquisite treasures stolen from Jews and displayed as propaganda trying to justify their hatred of the Jewish People. I found before me unbelievable wealth, abandoned by the fleeing murderers as the Allied armies advanced. I knew that the room would be bare, looted, by the morning, and I could take anything I wanted. Right before me there was a ring, a watch, and a pair of tefillin. You must understand that these were not ordinary jewelry, but they were taken from a very, very rich man. The ring alone was so costly that they said it was worth 34,000 days' labor.”

“At first I picked up the ring, then the watch, but I was afraid that if I took either of them, people would think that I was a very rich man and they would hunt me down for my wealth, so instead I took the tefillin. I want you to know that when I put them on I felt like I grew two feet taller. I felt strong again and I have been putting them on every day since then, and the good L-rd has kept me healthy every day since then.”

He looked at the boy who by now was a soft puddle. He hugged the boy and kissed him, “Now, I want you to put on tefillin.” The boy merged into the old man's hands as he helped him to put on the tefillin. “And after you put on tefillin, I want you to come home with me for Shabbos dinner.”

The boy's eyes were wide open and soaking wet. He was sure that he was dreaming, as the fortunate survivor led him away towards a joyful dinner and a changed life.

Grease a 15-inch pizza pan. Prepare the brownie mix according to box directions. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes, or until done. Remove from the oven and cool. Beat the cream cheese, pineapple, and sugar together in a bowl. Use any reserved pineapple juice at this time, if needed, to soften the mixture to a good spreading consistency.

Otherwise dispose of or save the juice for another use. Spread the mixture over the cooled brownie crust. Arrange the banana and strawberry slices over the cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle with the chopped nuts and drizzle with chocolate ice cream topping. Refrigerate. To serve, slice as you would a pizza, and enjoy!
