The Seder Service in a Nutshell

At the Seder, every person should see himself as if he were going out of Egypt. Beginning with our Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we recount the Jewish people’s descent into Egypt and recall their suffering and persecution.

s I write this article, Jewish women, and men, are scurrying to finish Passover preparations. Passover is the realization of the phrase that “it’s hard to be a Jew.” We need to buy ample Kosher for Passover foods, at excessive prices, to replace the non-Passover foods that filled our closets and refrigerator. We have our counters cleaned and our carpets scrubbed. We send our clothes to the cleaners and purchase new outfits to wear. We turn our children’s back packs inside out. We check the spaces between, behind, and under our couches. Just before the holiday, we “kasher” our silver and metal items that we can in boiling water. As we replace our now Kosher for Passover silver into our drawers, we realize that we are almost done with the cleaning process. Then, our family cooks take over. Food is prepared for the Sedarim and other meals for the first two days of the festival. Charoset is made. Horseradish is ground. Chairs are brought in from the garage with extra tables to extend our dining area to accommodate the family. Tables are set.

So, is the holiday worth it? In these days of two working parents, it is quite hard to set aside the time for Passover preparations. To make matters worse, those who have children in Jewish day schools see the closing of these schools for Passover vacation right when the cooking is at its peak, a day or two before Passover begins. Not only must one complete the cooking and other work for the holiday, this work must be done with children under foot as they are on vacation from school. Is it worth it? Does the end of celebrating a Kosher Passover justify the means of hard work and preparation? The special quality of the holiday is indeed worth the effort and cost!

As the sun sets, there is a gigantic feeling of relief. The preparations that began with the closing of Purim a month earlier, and in some cases even earlier, are now done. While there will be more work to set up for the second night for the second Seder and there will be additional festival meals completed for the last days of the holiday, the Passover preparations basically end with the sun setting and the opening of the Haggadahs and the pouring of the wine for Kiddush for the Seder.

Passover brings families together. The Seder is most often the largest gathering of family and friends at individual meals in the entire year. Family members often travel great distances to be together. Cousins spend time with one another. Grandparents are honored to see offspring. The joy of seeing last year’s “youngest” child being replaced with another four year old in the family to recite this year’s Four Questions is part of the family history. Passover reinforces family.

Many question whether the ends justify the means. Is Passover worth all the work?

The message of Passover is also worth all the effort. We retell the story of the Pesach and the Exodus from Egypt. We learn that all of our forefa-

through all of the work involved and make reservations at the various hotels scattered throughout the nation where others prepare Passover for you. But the privilege to have others prepare Passover for you comes at a steep price. A family of six can easily cost $10,000 at one of these Passover resorts. While many opt for this solution in an effort to keep some rest in these days of rest, most cannot afford this option.

thers were there. They all experienced the Pesach. This is not a holiday that happened to others. This happened to us. The personal message of the holiday transcends the typical religious message of most religions where something happened to a sage, prophet, or “saint.” Each Jew experiences the Passover. Each Jew recalls the personal experience of Pesach. Each Jew is important to the story and history. G-d is a personal G-d who saved us individually and collectively. We make each Seder special by having our children recall what they learned in school. We listen each Seder night to learn new messages through the Drashim our children recite and the lessons we ourselves have studied in preparation. Each family member, from youngest to oldest, becomes a teacher to the others by sharing the lessons they have learned. If the powerful meanings of the Sedarim are not enough, the message of the Torah portion on the holiday, where the splitting of the Sea is central, reinforces the message of how all Jews matter. All of the Children of Israel experienced the crossing through the Sea on dry land. Again, this is not some miracle that happened to a single prophet or religious figure as happens in the accounts of other religions. This happened to the entire multitude of the people, not just Moshe Rabbenu. It happened and continues to happen through the retelling of the account to all of us. Do I wish Passover was not quite so expensive? Yes. It appears to be part of G-d’s inexplicable plan to have

Passover expenses the same week that property taxes and income taxes are due. Are there ways we could make Passover cheaper or more affordable? I have heard of synagogues that encourage their members to give only Passover foods as Shelach Manot for Purim. Such an effort if spread would bring down some costs. There may be other ideas that could be implemented as well. Could there be ways that the preparations could be eased? The efforts of some schools and school children to have Passover car washes, to help with cleaning and home preparation, and other such efforts are all good. We, especially the women among us, can use all the help they can get. So there may be ways to lighten the Passover load. It certainly is worth a community discussion how we can make Passover a somewhat easier holiday to celebrate. But, the beauty and meaning of Passover deserve our preparations and work. (There are even important values as children share in the Passover preparations, to make Pesach different from the rest of the year.) When we celebrate the personal nature of our G-d and Creator and the unique events in history involving all of our ancestors, we realize how great this holiday is. Is Passover worth it? Yes. Chag Sameach V’Kasher, Have a joyous, Kosher, and meaningful holiday!

ets imagine that someone could produce a big budget movie that takes us back to ancient Egypt according to the Torah view of what really happened during the Exodus. We could personally experience millions of Jews suffering from the torments of slavery and then watch the miracles and redemption. With special effects and dramatic soundtrack we would feel almost as if we were there, be moved to tears, and truly identify with the experience. The Haggadah tells us that "In every generation a person is obligated to regard himself as if he had come out of Egypt." Yet, if the Seder night comes, and a person would sit down and watch that movie, feel, indentify, and be moved with the entire experience, that person would not have fulfilled this obligation. What if that same person, who perhaps has only recently

discovered his spiritual side, is dragged to a Pesach Seder never having learned anything about Judaism or the Exodus? At the seder, he is handed a matzah and told that on this very night, we went out of Egypt, and G-d has commanded us to eat this cracker. When this person eats the matzah, without real awareness or understanding of what is happening, this person has fulfilled the obligation and has gone out of Egypt! What is so special about this cracker which we call matzah? What is the power of this simple bread that we put as much effort and holy intention into the cutting, guarding, kneading, baking and eating of it, as we do into the preparation of holy objects like Tefillin, Tzitzis, or the writing of a Torah scroll? Why is eating matzah the only way to truly experience Yetzias Mitzrayim, our Exodus from

Egypt? The holy Zohar tell us that matzah is called "Michlah DiMehiminusa/The Food of Faith." The Haggadah says "This matzah that we eat -- for what reason? Because the dough of our fathers did not have time to become leavened before the King of the king of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He, revealed Himself to them and redeemed them." Matzah contains a mystical energy that infuses faith into the soul. The matzah serves as a conduit through which Hashem reveals himself to the soul. The Ari Z"L explains the secret as to why we are nurtured by the food that we eat. Food possesses a higher energy, it contains a spark originating from a place higher than the source of the human soul. In its physical state it is trapped and separated from its exalted source. When we eat a vegetable or animal and digest it, we also swallow the spark into human spiritual consciousness. When this is done properly, with the right intensions, one elevates and brings an awareness of Hashem to the object. Once it is unlocked into its true environment, this spark of energy will radiate and act on its own desire to elevate even higher, with the human bound to it. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 70B) tells us that bread strengthens the mind. R' Yehuda says "An infant cannot say 'father' and 'mother' until it has tasted of wheat." Simply this means that during the age of nursing they don't have that mental recognition or capability, but by the time the child is weaned and begins eating regular food, particularly grain, it has the ability and intellectual maturity to be able to identify and recognize its parents. The deeper meaning is that there is something within the bread itself, that strengthens the child's knowledge and unlocks the understanding. The Zohar says that when the Jews left Egypt, they were like little children, and they did not know their father in heaven until they ate the matzah. It was the act of eating the matzah that gave them this enlightenment to connect with Hashem. All grain contains this particular quality, but why specifically matzah, to the exclusion of all other types of bread? Furthermore, why must we eradicate all other types of grain and leavened breads before we can eat the matzah? Being that there are two varieties of bread, it can be concluded that there are two types of energy that can be fed and used to connect to Hashem. The first is an inflated leavened intellect, an understanding based upon egotistical logical reasoning. The second is flat, matzah-like intellect, one of surrender and submission, at the expense of self. This is the difference between faith and knowledge. Bread is the food of knowledge and understanding, matzah is the food of faith.

17

March 26, 2 0 1 0

We can come to an understanding of G-d through our minds, thorough learning and research, thinking and analyzing knowledge, and coming to wondrous conclusions of the greatness of G-d. Yet, even with a full understanding one is still very limited with our minds, we are not relating to G-d, rather we are connecting to the image of G-d that is created by our finite mind. As the Zohar explains, "there is no thought that can grasp Him at all." Hashem is not graspable, he has no limits and no boundaries, and there is no mind that can know him. How can we connect with and fully experience Hashem in his very essence? That is in our emunah, our faith. Faith is based on conviction, it's a full belief with passive receptiveness to the revelation of Hashem directly within the soul. Faith knows G-d, but not intellectually. For example, if one wanted to understand the parent/child relationship, there are two ways to go about it. One is to research and study the scientific writings explaining the biological, psychological and emotional connections between child and parent. One can even delve in to Kabbalah to learn the symbolism and esoteric meaning of these relationships. After years of research, this person will have a big fat book with a lot of information. The other way to discover this is to walk past a playground. Observe there, a little child who is terrified and bewildered. He's lost his mommy or daddy, and searches the strange faces. As he's running back and forth, suddenly, his father appears in the corner of his eye. At that moment, the child can't help himself, and he shrieks "DADDY!" That single word, captures the essence of their relationship. This little child has no knowledge or understanding about this man or how this person came to be his father. The cry comes from deep inside the child, beyond anything the child is capable of thinking. With emunah, something is introduced to us that is bigger than the confinement of our brains. With faith we can cry out to G-d himself. When G-d is revealed to the soul, He is revealed as He is, there is nothing other than Him. We lose all ego, and any sense of self disappears. It is a silent awareness that is not coming from the person. That's why emunah is feminine, it's a mekabel, receptor, because we are receiving that awareness from Hashem Himself. Being in Egypt is also an emotional state of being. It's being entrenched in ego and existence, in pitch black darkness. If a person sees the world as something other than Hashem, that is being stuck in a lie. Going out of Egypt means being exposed to the truth and accepting the reality of only Hashem, and that we are simply expressions of

Him. This is what is revealed on Pesach at night, at the moment of the Exodus. The says "Niglah Aliehem/HE was revealed to them, the King of the king of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He..." That was the moment that Hashem stripped all veils and partitions. Usually only the transmissions of Hashem comes through to the world, and only after tremendous concealment and contraction. Here, Hashem revealed himself to the world for the first time as HE really is. At that moment, the Jewish people became a matzah. They lost all sense of self. It eliminated ego so thoroughly that even within their possessions, the bread couldn't rise. It's interesting to note, that chometz is not forbidden throughout the rest of the year. If this sense of self awareness is something so despicable and arrogant, why should we eat bread at all? There is nothing wrong with a person exploring the mind. It is important to understand, and we are supposed to understand and try to make sense of things. But that has to be secondary. The core of the Jew and our route to connect to Hashem is through faith. Everything begins with the humility of the matzah, with the humbleness of the flat, unleavened bread that we eat at the seder. A quintessential bond with Hashem takes place at that moment, our soul is energized and this empowers us. The rest of the year, we are only building on that revelation. G-d willing, even before we eat the matzah this year, we will be in Jerusalem. • Excerpt from "The Parsha In My Life" class by Rabbi Reuven Wolf Maayon Yisroel was founded by Rabbi Reuven Wolf, a renowned educator and inspiring lecturer who has devoted his life to reaching out and rekindling the spirit of Yiddishkeit in his fellow Jew. PARSHAS TZAV

T

his week's portion begins with Hashem telling Moshe to teach Ahron and his children a few laws. Hashem does not tell Moshe to speak to Ahron, He does not even tell Moshe to teach Ahron. He tells Moshe "Tzav es Ahron." Command Ahron. "Tzav," Rashi explains, "is a very powerful word. It means command with a charge that is to be executed with speed and diligence. The word tzav," Rashi continues, "is also used only for situations that have eternal ramifications." If we analyze the next few commands, we may be left wondering: why do those charges need the powerful preface Tzav? The next verse is about the Korban Olah. A Korban Olah is a sacrifice that is committed entirely to Hashem, no part of the animal, save the skin, is left for human benefit or consumption. The person who brings it wants to make sure that it is offered within the highest standards of Halacha. The admonition, tzav surely is appropriate. However, the Torah only spends one verse on the Olah. It proceeds to tell us about the daily cleaning of the ashes of the altar. A Kohen must wear linen vestments, re-

large volume on his old table, and would start to pray. He would often condense his advice into on or two sentences, but it would be potent. People asked, and he gave answers. Within days miraculous salvation came. And so did the people. They stood in lines outside his modest home, and the very old man would find the time to see anyone who walked in with the problems of the world bearing down on his or her shoulder. An aspiring young man, whose quest was to be as great a scholar as the Steipler himself, came with a problem. The young man felt that this particular predicament was impeding his spiritual growth and surely a man like Rabbi Kanievski, who persevered in the face of life-threatening problems, could relate to his! The young man had written the situation in detail for the Steipler to grasp its severity. "Every Friday," wrote the young man, "I come home from Yeshiva, and the scene in the house leads me to despair. The table is not set, the kitchen is hardly clean, and the children are not bathed! What should I do? How can I concentrate on my studies when I have such problems?" The aspiring scholar expected the Steipler to advise him how to deal with a wife that was not keeping to his standard.

Room For A Broom move the ashes, and place them near the altar. Why is this menial job mentioned together with the holy Olah? To what end does it merit the powerful command, tzav? The Steipler Gaon, Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Kanievski, was a paradigm of holiness. The stories about his sanctity were well known throughout the Torah community. At seventeen, he had already survived the Russian army without compromising Shabbos or Kashrut. The Steipler was not known for lengthy conversation. He had lost his hearing standing as a sentry on freezing Siberian nights during his tenure in the Czar's army. People would write questions to him or beseech him to pray on behalf of the sick or unfortunate. The Steipler would read the note, hardly lift his eyes from the

The Steipler looked up from the paper and made a grave face. The young man smiled. The Steipler must have realized the severity of the situation. Then he spoke in his heavy Russian-accented Yiddish. "You really want to know what to do?" The young man nodded eagerly. The Steipler looked austere. "TAKE A BROOM!" Rabbeinu Yonah of Girondi (1180-1263) explains the juxtaposition of the command to sweep ashes with that of the Korban Olah. A person must realize that sometimes what is considered menial work in human eyes merits the highest accord in Hashem's eyes. The mitzvah of sweeping the Altar is prefaced with the word tzav and placed next to the Korban Olah. One must realize that the little, unglorified acts also yield great sanctity. In the quest for spirituality, one must never demean the simple chores. For no matter how holy one is, there is always room for a broom. •

The Seder Service in a Nutshell A quick overview of the Passover Meal's steps water and eaten (after reciting the blessing over vegetables).

In Our Forefathers’ Footsteps At the Seder, every person should see himself as if he were going out of Egypt. Beginning with our Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we recount the Jewish people’s descent into Egypt and recall their suffering and persecution. We are with them as G-d sends the Ten Plagues to punish Pharaoh and his nation, and follow along as they leave Egypt and cross the Sea of Reeds. We witness the miraculous hand of G-d as the waters part to allow the Israelites to pass, then return to inundate the Egyptian legions. _______________________________________________ Kadesh - the Benediction The Seder service begins with the recitation of Kiddush, proclaiming the holiness of the holiday. This is done over a cup of wine, the first of the four cups we will drink (while reclining) at the Seder. _______________________________________________ The Four Cups of Wine Why four cups? The Torah uses four expressions of freedom or deliverance in connection with our liberation from Egypt (see Exodus 6:6-7). Also, the Children of Israel had four great merits even while in exile: (1) They did not change their Hebrew names; (2) they continued to speak their own language, Hebrew; (3) they remained highly moral; (4) they remained loyal to one another. Wine is used because it is a symbol of joy and happiness. _______________________________________________ Why We Recline When drinking the four cups and eating the Matzah we lean on our left side to accentuate the fact that we are free people. In ancient times only free people had the luxury of reclining while eating. _______________________________________________ Urchatz - Purification We wash our hands in the usual, ritually-prescribed manner before a meal, but without the customary blessing. The next step in the Seder, Karpas, requires dipping food into water, which in turn mandates, according to Jewish law, that either the food be eaten with a utensil or that one's hands be purified by washing. On the Seder eve we choose the less common observance to arouse the child's curiosity. _______________________________________________

28

Dipping the Karpas in salt water is an act of pleasure and freedom, which further arouses the child's curiosity. The Hebrew word "Karpas," when read backwards, alludes to the backbreaking labor performed by the 600,000 Jews in Egypt. [Samech has the numerical equivalent of 60 (60 times 10,000), while the last three Hebrew letters spell "perech," hard work.] The salt water represents the tears of our ancestors in Egypt. _______________________________________________ Yachatz - Breaking the Matzah The middle Matzah on the Seder plate is broken in two. The larger part is put aside for later use as the Afikoman. This unusual action not only attracts the child's attention once again, but also recalls G-d's splitting of the Sea of Reeds to allow the Children of Israel to cross on dry land. The smaller part of the middle Matzah is returned to the Seder plate. This broken middle Matzah symbolizes humility and will be eaten later as the "bread of poverty." _______________________________________________ Maggid - the Haggadah At this point, the poor are invited to join the Seder. The Seder tray is moved aside, a second cup of wine is poured, and the child, who by now is bursting with curiosity, asks the time-honored question: "Mah nish-tah-na hah-laila-ha-zeh me-kol hah leilot? Why is this night different from all other nights?" Why only Matzah? Why the dipping? Why the bitter herbs? Why are we relaxing and leaning on cushions as if we were kings? The child's questioning triggers one of the most significant mitzvot of Passover, which is the highlight of the Seder ceremony: the Haggadah, telling the story of the Exodus from Egypt. The answer includes a brief review of history, a description of the suffering imposed upon the Israelites, a listing of the plagues visited on the Egyptians, and an enumeration of the miracles performed by the Al-mighty for the redemption of His people. _______________________________________________ Rochtzah - Washing Before the Meal After concluding the first part of the Haggadah by drinking (while reclining) the second cup of wine, the hands are washed again, this time with the customary blessings, as is usually done before eating bread. _______________________________________________

Karpas - the "Appetizer"

Motzie Matzah

A small piece of onion or boiled potato is dipped into salt

We eat the matzah.

Taking hold of the three Matzot (with the broken one in between the two whole ones), recite the customary blessing before bread. Then, letting the bottom Matzah drop back onto the plate, and holding the top whole Matzah with the broken middle one, recite the special blessing "Al achilat Matzah." Then break at least one ounce from each Matzah and eat the two pieces together, while reclining. _______________________________________________

Hallel - Songs of Praise At this point, having recognized the Al-mighty, and His unique guidance of the Jewish people, we go still further and sing His praises as L-rd of the entire universe. After reciting the Hallel, we again recite the blessing over wine and drink the fourth cup, reclining _______________________________________________ Nirtzah - Acceptance

Maror - the Bitter Herbs Take at least 1 ounce of the bitter herbs. Dip it in the charoset, then shake the latter off and make the blessing "Al achilat Maror." Eat without reclining. _______________________________________________

Having carried out the Seder service properly, we are sure that it has been well received by the Al-mighty. We then say "Leshanah haba'ah bee-rushalayim -- Next year in Jerusalem." www..chabad.org

Korech - the Sandwich In keeping with the custom instituted by Hillel, the great Talmudic Rabbi, a sandwich of Matzah and Maror is eaten. Break off two pieces of the bottom Matzah, which together should be at least one ounce. Again, take at least 1 ounce of bitter herbs and dip them in the charoset. Place this between the two pieces of Matzah, say "Kein asah Hillel..."and eat the sandwich while reclining. _______________________________________________ Shulchan Orech - the Feast The holiday meal is now served. We begin the meal with a hardboiled egg dipped into salt water. A Rabbi was once asked why Jews eat eggs on Passover. "Because eggs symbolize the Jew," the Rabbi answered. "The more an egg is burned or boiled, the harder it gets." Note: The chicken neck is not eaten at the Seder. ___________________________________ Tzafun - Out of Hiding After the meal, the half Matzah which had been "hidden," set aside for the Afikoman ("dessert"), is taken out and eaten. It symbolizes the Paschal lamb, which was eaten at the end of the meal. Everyone should eat at least 1 1/2 ounces of Matzah, reclining, before midnight. After eating the Afikoman, we do not eat or drink anything except for the two remaining cups of wine. ___________________________________ Barech - Blessings After the Meal A third cup of wine is filled and Grace is recited. After the Grace we recite the blessing over wine and drink the third cup while reclining. Now we fill the cup of Elijah and our own cups with wine. We open the door and recite the passage which symbolizes an invitation to the Prophet Elijah, the harbinger of the coming of Moshiach, our righteous Messiah.

Shmerl's Seder

I

t was well past midnight on the first night of Passover, and the great Chassidic master Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev had just concluded enacting the Passover Seder in the presence of his disciples. They had recited the Haggadah, recounting the story of the Exodus and discussing the deeper meanings implicit in each of its passages; they drank the four cups of wine, dipped the karpas in the salt water and the bitter herbs in charoset, ate the matzah, the korech and the afikoman, sang the psalms of praise and gratitude -- all in accordance with the letter of the Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law) and the esoteric principles found in the awesome mystical works of the saintly "Ari". Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's disciples had participated in many of their Rebbe's seders in the past, but this one surpassed them all. The Rebbe and all those present felt transported into a different world, as though they had risen above their bodily limitations and into a world of pure G-dliness.

38

March 26, 2 0 1 0

Suddenly the room filled with the sound of a deep rumbling like thunder, and from within the thunder an awesome voice announced: "Levi Yitzchak's seder was pleasing to G-d, but there is a Jew in Berdichev called Shmerl the Tailor whose seder reached even higher!" The Rebbe looked around him. It was obvious that only he had heard the heavenly announcement. "Has anyone heard of a tzaddik (righteous person) called Shmerl the Tailor?" he asked his Chassidim. No one had. After several minutes of silence one of the elderly Chassidim offered: "There is one Shmerl here in Berdichev that I know of, and he used to be a tailor about thirty years ago, but he's certainly no tzaddik. In fact he's pretty far from that. They call him now 'Shmerl the Shikker' (drunkard) and he lives with his wife in a old large shipping crate near the railroad tracks."

• 323-965-1544 •

But Rabbi Levi Yitchak was thinking to himself, "Ahah! this must be one of the hidden tzaddikim. And he lives right here, in Berdichev, while I knew nothing about him!"

is scurrying about -- except me.

It was two o'clock in the morning when the Rebbe stood at the door of old Shmerl's hovel.

"So he answers me, 'Oy Shmerl, are you so drunk that you forgot that tonight is Pesach? Tonight is Pesach! Do you remember what Pesach is?'

An old Jewish woman answered his soft knock. "Good Yom Tov!" said Rabbi Levi Yitzchak quietly. "Please excuse me for the late hour. Is your husband Shmerl at home?" "Good Yom Tov," She answered. "Just wait one minute please, Rebbe, wait right here. She disappeared into the house, and the unmistakable sound of a bucket being filled with water was heard from inside. Then a minute or two of silence and suddenly... SPLASH! She threw the bucket of water on her sleeping husband. "Aaahh! Oyyy! Where am I? Ooiy vai!" he screamed, and then his wife was heard shouting, "Get up you drunk! The Rebbe has come to punish you! Wake up, you good-fornothing!"

"So I stopped someone I recognized and asked him, 'What is everyone rushing for? Where are they all going?'

"I tried thinking but my mind wouldn't work. Pesach, Pesach, I... I can't remember. It sounds very important though; I remember something about Matzos... and Egypt. 'Please,' I begged the man, 'do me a favor and tell me what it is again.' "The man looked at me in a strange way, and answered 'Listen, Shmerl, tonight you have to make a seder. You know, recite the Haggadah, eat three matzos, bitter herbs, four cups of wine. You'll enjoy the wine Shmerl,' he said with a sad smile, 'though I guess you won't enjoy abstaining from your foul vodka for eight days...' "'Eight days!' I cried. 'Why? Why can't I drink for eight days?' I was trembling and beginning to remember a little.

Poor Shmerl staggered, sopping wet, to the door. When he saw that it really was the Rebbe standing there at his door in the middle of the night, he fell at Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's feet and began weeping, "Please, Rebbe don't punish me. It's not my fault... I didn't know any better... Please, have mercy..."

"'Because that's the law!' he answered. 'For eight days, if you're a Jew, no chametz (leaven) passes your lips. Vodka is chametz. If you can't hold out for eight days, maybe go to Israel,' he laughed, 'there chametz is only forbidden seven days...'

The Rebbe of Berdichev was completely astounded at this bizarre scene. Could it be that this man's seder was loftier than his own?

"I was stunned. No vodka for eight days! I rushed home, took all the money I had, bought a big bottle of vodka, poured myself eight large cups one after the other, and drank them down... hoping that that would help me make it through the holiday.

He bent down, lifted poor Shmerl to his feet and said, "Listen, Shmerl, I didn't come to punish you. In fact I don't even know what you are talking about. Please let me in, let's sit down and talk. I only want to ask you something. Go put on a dry shirt and we'll talk." Minutes later they sat facing each other over Shmerl's small table. The Rebbe looked at him kindly and said: "Shmerl, listen. I want you to tell me how you conducted your seder last night. Don't worry, I promise that I'm not going to punish you, I promise. "Oy!" moaned Shmerl and began weeping again. "My seder! But Rebbe, I really didn't know any better... Oooy!" Gradually he calmed down and began speaking. "Early this morning, that is... yesterday morning, I'm walking in the street and suddenly I notice that people are rushing about. This one has a broom over his shoulder, that one is carrying a box, the other one something else, everyone

39

"The next thing I remember is that I'm sleeping soundly in my bed when suddenly my wife throws a bucket of water on me -- you saw how she does it -- and starts screaming, 'Shmerl, you bum! You drunk! You good-fornothing! All Jews all over the world are making the seder tonight, and you are lying there like a drunken ox. Wake up and make a seder!' "So I staggered to my feet, put on some dry clothes and sat down at the beautifully set table. "The candles were shining brightly and making the plates and silverware sparkle so nicely. Everything was new, clean. I felt so different, almost holy. The wine and the matzos were on the table, the Haggadah was open in front of me. My wife had even set up the seder plate with all its things like she remembered from her father. She herself was sitting in her place opposite me like a queen, and

was even smiling. Everything was so beautiful. "But then -- I looked around me and didn't know what to do. The vodka was still swirling in my head, but, to be honest, Rebbe, even sober I don't know how to make a seder. "So I took a large bowl, and put everything in there. The three matzos, the bitter herbs, the dish of charoset, all those little items my wife had set up on the seder plate, I poured in the four cups of wine, and swirled it all together. "Then I lifted up my seder bowl and started talking to G-d. Just like I'm talking to you now. I started talking to G-d and I said, 'G-d, listen... I don't know You, but You know me. You know that after my father got killed I had to work all the time and I never had a chance to learn, right? So I don't know how to read this book, in fact I can't read anything! And I don't know what I'm supposed to do with all this stuff either. But one thing I do know... I know that a long time ago You sent Moses to take us out of Egypt, and I'm sure that you will send Moshiach to take us out of all our troubles now!'

CityHappenings YOUNG CHEVRA FAMILY FUN DAY PROMOTES UNITY IN THE SOUTHLAND

and friendship that is developing among the young Chabad families throughout the southland.

Last week, approximately 300 hundred men, women and children showed up to attend a Young Chevra of Southern California family fun day and barbeque. Young families from the Agoura, Long Beach, Valley, Lomita, Pico Robertson and La Brea communities came out in force to be united together and spend time with their families at Golf N’ Stuff. Located in picturesque Norwalk, California they enjoyed a fun filled day playing mini-golf, driving go karts and bumper cars, playing arcades, riding the Express Train and getting soaked on the bumper boats. This was followed by a sunny California BBQ and then a Tzivos Hashem children’s rally led by Rabbi Shua Einbinder.

Young Chevra has set the bar high for communities across the country. The relatively new organization was established only two years ago with the goal of promoting achdus among the young and rapidly growing Lubavitch communities of Southern California.

A very diverse group was in attendance, including professionals, proprietors, teachers and shluchim. Ages ranged from young newlyweds to families with multiple children highlighting the unique sense of harmony

The Board of Young Chevra has wide representation comprised of members from all the main local Shuls and regional communities. These men and women devote their personal time and energy to help make events like the one on Sunday a huge success. Young Chevra is now planning its annual weekend Shabbaton at Running Springs. The group has also launched a Gemach – Free Loan Fund for the Young Chevra community as well as a special Maos Chittim campaign to assist young families in meeting the costly needs of Pesach.

Tragedies happen. Unfortunately, we can't control them, and we have to learn to live with their consequences, as we try to continue our lives. Tragedy does not discriminate. It touches the lives of the wealthy and the poor, the wicked and the righteous. The Torah does not avoid telling us about the greatest of tragedies that happened to the most righteous of men. This week it describes the tragedy that occurred to one our greatest leaders, Ahron the Kohen Gadol. His two children, Nadav and Avihu, were tragically consumed by fire while bringing an undesignated offering to Hashem. Moshe is faced with the most difficult of challenges, consoling his bereaved brother who just lost two of his beloved children. The challenge is great and the words of consolation that Moshe used should serve as a precedent for all consolation for generations. Moshe consoles Ahron by telling him, "This is what Hashem has previously said: By those who are close to me I shall be sanctified and thus I will be honored by the entire congregation" (Leviticus 10:3). Powerful words. Deep and mystical. We are in this world by G-d's command, and our mission is to maintain and promote His glory. Those are words that may not console simple folk, but they were enough for Ahron who after hearing the words went from weeping to silence. But Moshe did not just quote the Torah, he prefaced his remarks: "This is what Hashem has previously said." Only after that premise does he continue with the words of consolation. Why was it necessary to preface those powerful words by saying that they were once stated? After all, the entire Torah was once stated. Could Moshe not just as easily have stated, "My dear brother Ahron. Hashem is glorified by judgment of his dear ones." It seems that the familiarity of the statements was part and parcel of its consoling theme. Why? The sudden death of Reb Yosef could not have come at a more untimely time - a few days before Passover. A

Holocaust survivor, he had rebuilt his life in Canada and left this world a successful businessman, with a wonderful wife, children, and grandchildren. It was difficult, however, for them all to leave their families for the first days of Passover to accompany his body, and thus his widow traveled with her son to bury her husband in Israel. After the funeral the two mourners sat in their apartment in the Shaarei Chesed section of Jerusalem. Passover was fast approaching, and they were planning to spend the Seder at the home of relatives. As they were about to end the brief Shiva period and leave their apartment, a soft knocked interrupted their thoughts. At the door to her apartment stood none other than one of Israel's most revered Torah sages, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach. "I live nearby," he said, "and I heard that there was a funeral today. I came to offer my condolences." The sage then heard a brief history of Reb Yosef's difficult, yet remarkably triumphant life. Then Reb Shlomo Zalman turned to the widow and asked a very strange question. "Did you say the blessing Boruch Dayan HaEmes? Blessed are You, Hashem, the true Judge." "Why? Yes," answered the elderly lady. "I said it right as the funeral ended. But it is very difficult to understand and accept."

Consolation Reprise

Reb Shlomo Zalman, a man who lived through dire poverty and illness, four wars, and the murder of a relative by Arab terrorists, nodded. "I understand your questions. That blessing is very difficult to understand and to accept. You must, however, say it again and again. As difficult as it may be, believe me, if you repeat it enough you will understand it." Moshe understood that as difficult as it may be, the words he used to console Ahron were the precise ones that encompassed the essence of the meaning of life and death. They would be understood by Ahron. But he had to preface it by saying that this not a new form of condolence. It has been said before. It was already taught. Now it must repeated. Difficult questions have no simple answers, but it is the faith of generations that must be constantly repeated and repeated. There are no new condolences; there are no fast answers. The only answers we can give are those that have been said for generations. Perhaps that is why we console our loved ones today with the same consolation that has been said for centuries. "May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem." And it shall be repeated - again and again -- until there is no more mourning. •

Gold in them Thar Walls This week, in reading both Tazria and Metzorah, we combine portions that deal with the physio-spiritual plague of tzora'as. Tzora'as is a discoloration that appears in varying forms on human skin, on hair, clothing, and even on the walls of one's home. The afflicted individual must endure a complicated process of purification in order to rejoin the community. The Talmud explains that tzoraas is a divine punishment for the sins of slander and gossip. In fact, the Talmud in Ararchin 16b comments that the reason that the afflicted is sent out of the camp was because "he separated friends and families through his words, and deserves to be separated from his community." Rashi and the Ramban explain that the first form of tzora'as does not begin on the person. Hashem in His mercy first strikes at inanimate objects -- one's possessions. The discoloration first appears on the walls of a home, forcing the affected stones to be removed and destroyed. If that event does not succeed as a wakeup-call, and the person continues his malevolent activities, then his clothing is affected. If that fails, eventually the flesh is transformed and white lesions appear, forcing the afflicted to leave the Jewish camp until the plague subsides and the Kohen declares him acceptable to return. Rashi tells us that the first stage of tzora'as -- the home -- is actually a blessing in disguise. Tzora'as on a home can indeed bring fortune to the affected. As the Israelites were approaching the Land of Canaan, the inhabitants, figuring that one day they would re-conquer the land, hid all their gold and silver inside the walls of their homes. When one dislodged the afflicted stones of his home he would find the hidden treasures that were left by the fleeing Canaanites. It is troubling. Why should the first warning of tzora'as reek of triumph? What message is Hashem sending to the first offender by rewarding his misdeeds with a cache of gold? What spiritual import is gained from the materialistic discovery?

After the end of World War II, the brilliant and flamboyant Torah sage, Rabbi Eliezer Silver visited and aided thousands of survivors in displaced persons camps in Germany and Poland who were waiting to find permanent homes. man flatly refused to accept any. "After the way I saw Jews act in the camp, I don't want to have any connection with religion!" Rabbi Silver asked him to explain what exactly had turned him off from Jewish practice. "I saw a Jew who had a Siddur, yet he only allowed it to be used by the inmates in exchange for their daily bread ration. Imagine," he sneered, "a Jew selling the right to daven for bread!" "And how many customers did this man get?" inquired Rabbi Silver.

"Far too many!" snapped the man.

Rabbi Silver put his hand around the gentlemen and gently explained. "Why are you looking at the bad Jew who sold the right to pray? Why don't you look at the many good Jews who were willing to forego their rations and starve, just in order to pray? Isn't that the lesson you should take with you?" Perhaps Hashem in His compassion is sending much more to the gossiper than a get-rich-quick scheme. He shows the first-time slanderer to look a little deeper at life. On the outside he may see a dirty wall of a former Canaanite home. Dig a little deeper and you will find gold in them thar walls. Next time you look at a person only superficially -- think. Dig deeper. There is definitely gold beneath the surface. Sometimes you have to break down your walls to find the gold you never thought it existed. •
