H

ave you ever stayed home from work or school when you are ill and just dying to get some sleep? I dare you to sleep after 9:00 a.m. It is at 9:00 a.m. that the phone begins to ring off the hook from various charities asking for your money. It seems that various professional fundraisers are doing their best to make you sometimes regret that you ever made a contribution in the first place. Whether through persistent phone calls at inconvenient hours, through mounds of junk mail, or through knocks on the front door, it seems that fundraisers have become experts in taking advantage of your generosity. Giving to charities puts you on lists to get calls and mail. It seems that the more you give, the greater the likelihood that you will be bothered. There are other questionable practices of many charities. During a major disaster several years ago, I called to pledge money to help in the recovery effort to a very prominent national charity. When I received the bill for my pledge, I promptly paid it. Two months later, I received a phone call that my pledge had still not been paid. I thought that maybe the check had gotten “lost in the mail.” I then questioned whether I had sent the check in the first place. Thinking that I had made some sort of mistake, I promptly sent a second check. However, when later going through some of my bank records, I realized that over two months earlier, that charity had cashed my donation. It did not matter to them whether I had paid or not. Somebody within the charity’s apparatus had concluded that routine calling of those who had made pledges would not only be helpful in collecting from those who had not yet paid but might contribute to getting additional money from those who had paid. A major organization, however, should have the ability after two

9

August 13, 2 0 1 0

months to have in their files that they had already cashed and deposited payment. These kinds of practices go beyond charities. My wife became very concerned last year about a political cause. She was so concerned that she made a phone call to contribute to this cause. However, the one donation to one cause triggered a veritable avalanche of solicitation requests from numerous other organizations. The political organization that had received my wife’s contribution evidently shared her name and address with as many as a hundred other political groups. One contribution led to literally hundreds of envelopes of solicitations and phone calls over the next couple of months. Again, the phone rang off the hook. Some of the brochures that you receive regarding charities in Israel are quite welcoming. Many describe helping people in real need and quality programs to serve them. I responded once to one of those charities that looked so good in their brochure only to find that the charity also then sold my name, address, phone number, and other information to many other charities. I know this because the charity to which I gave had incorrectly spelled our name. In the next couple of months, we received dozens of solicitations from charities in Israel with the same misspelling. So much were we bothered that it just seemed that it was not worth it to have given in the first place, no matter how good the cause. I find myself responding to these problems and concerns by turning inward. When a charity calls on the phone, I simply state that I do not respond to phone solicitations. When I receive an envelope from a charity in the mail, I simply throw it out without looking at it. While I try not to be mean, the quality of our lives has been substantially changed as a result of those professional solicitors who take advantage.

I am reminded of the story of the Rabbi who always expressed trust. The Rabbi was in his study with the Shul president when one day a frantic man appeared. This man proclaimed that he didn’t know what to do as his young daughter required surgery to live. The man and his family had exhausted all of their resources but still were $1100.00 short of having enough money for the surgery. Without the surgery, his daughter would surely die. The Rabbi took out his checkbook from his desk and wrote a check for $1100.00 from the Rabbi’s Special Fund to the man. The man seemed so happy as a result. He told the Rabbi that now he could get the proper medical care for his daughter. He thanked the Rabbi profusely and repeatedly shook the Rabbi’s hand. After the man left, the Shul president inquired: How can you trust a man off the street like that? How can you just write out a check for $1100.00 to someone you never met. The Rabbi responded that when a person is in need, you must respond. About a week later, there was a front page article in the local newspaper. It seems that a man was going to churches and synagogues in the local area asking for money for a surgery for his daughter. The man’s daughter had no illness or need for surgery. Even after one minister gave to him, he went to other ministers, priests, and rabbis to still get additional donations. The news account reported that the man had been arrested for fraud. The synagogue president cut out the ar-

ticle and brought it to the Rabbi. The Rabbi read the article and a broad smile appeared on his face. The Shul president asked how could you smile after being taken advantage of like that? The Rabbi responded, I am smiling because the girl is not sick. We somehow have to balance the possibility of being taken advantage and the reality of the needs of people served by charities. Having your family disturbed is bothersome. But I am sure my “bother” is not as bad as the “bother” of those who go without food or without shelter. You have to protect your family and your family’s quality of life, but you also have to keep giving. So how do I respond if I don’t respond to phone solicitations or the envelopes that come in the mail? When I hear about a charity doing special work from friends or other sources, I don’t wait for a letter of solicitation but rather try to write out a check directly. I also find myself no longer giving many smaller multiple gifts to many different charities that I used to give. I now give larger donations to the charities to which I give. I still don’t know on balance how to respond to the predicament of current fundraising habits of organizations. But I know that it is still a Mitzvah to give. How do you handle this predicament? I welcome your responses and input. Maybe you have developed your own, better ways of dealing with the current environment and fundraising habits of charities. If you want to reach me, I know when you can. On any Sunday morning you will find me wide awake after repeated early morning calls. •

The King in the Field

R

Waking Up to the Smell of Roses

abbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi describes the great opportunity of the month of Elul with the following powerful analogy: A king and his subjects have an essential bond. A true king cares for his subjects and is committed to their well being. He protects and provides for them, and works to alleviate their suffering. He tries to make their lives easier and more fulfilling. The subjects, on their part, live for their king. They boast of his strength, might, heroism, generosity, benevolence and kindness. They are ultimately loyal to him and will do everything to fulfill every one of his desires and wishes. They pay their taxes willfully and, if needed, will join the king's army and place themselves in harm's way, or even give their lives for the king's sake. Most of the King's subjects are residents of distant cities and the farmers and villagers throughout his country and don't have any direct contact with their king. The king lives secluded in his capital city, beyond the palace walls, where most of his subjects don't usually go. Even the people living in the capital only get see their king every once in a while, when he comes out for a parade or special event. If an ordinary citizen wants an

16

August 13, 2 0 1 0

audience with the king, there is a long and complex procedure to follow. First, an application needs to be filled out and sent to the royal government. That application is then scrutinized by the palace secretaries, and if deemed worthy of the king’s attention, the King’s guard will do a thorough security investigation of the individual. If the ministers and guards decide to allow a citizen to see the king, they will schedule an appointment, maybe weeks, months or years in the future. After the nerve wracking wait, the citizen needs to travel to the capital, weeks in advance of the appointment, to meet with an advisory board. They prepare him for the audience by describing and approving the types of clothing to wear in front of the king, how to walk into the room, how to speak to the king; They will rehearse the proper greetings , how to bow to the king and even how to leave the room. Even after all of these months of preparation, of neglecting work and family, all for the sake of the appointment, the citizen can only hope that the king will be willing to listen and grant the request. When they visit the capital or the palace, the citizens are always acting on their best behavior. The royal decorum demands it, but it isn’t natural behavior for most of the people, and the king who truly loves and appreciates his people wants to get to know them, and see • 323-965-1544 •

them as they truly are, in their normal lives. Once in a while, the king longs to leave the palace and spend time with his people. He wants to get to know them and see them as they are in their regular lives, in their own homes. So, from time to time the king goes out to the countryside to observe and meet the people. He isn’t coming to intimidate or overwhelm them, so he doesn’t come with his grand royal coach and full entourage. He leaves the pomp behind, dresses in more casual clothes, and comes out to the distant villages with only a few servants, in an ordinary coach. The king doesn’t send ahead royal proclamations or announcements that he is coming. He simply rides towards the village, past the roadside inns and the wheat fields where the peasants are working. The king stops to watch. The shop keepers and the ordinary folks come out to see who is there. Some have heard that the king is around, but they aren’t exactly sure if that is him. Some wave, but most feel a little intimidated. Finally, someone steps up to the king and discovers his radiant smile and his happiness to be with the people. This encourages more of the people to come over and greet him. A tractor rolling by also stops. This farmer, in the middle of his work day, is excited and anxious to info@communitylinks.info

see the king. He jumps off the tractor and tries to make himself presentable for the king. He pushes his hair back with his hands and wipes the dirt and grease from his fingers on a towel that is tucked into his overalls. He runs to the crowd and when his turn comes, he makes his way to the king, introduces himself and shakes the king’s hand. Ordinarily, this sweaty man with his dirty overalls and greasy hands would never come close to the king. But here, not only is it perfectly fine, but it is what the king desires.

In the palace one can see all of the majesty and the glamour of the king, which isn’t apparent when the king is in the field. On the other hand, the simplicity and pure closeness that someone can have with the king in the field is so much deeper then that in the palace. A subject can be up close and personal and talk to the king like a friend, as opposed to when he is in the palace and the citizen is granted only a few words, and where one is overwhelmed and intimidated with so much fear of the king that it is very difficult to relate to him.

The king is overjoyed to meet each of the villagers. He is smiling and listening as they tell him how much they admire and appreciate him. A few present him with a small gift and others take the opportunity to ask for help with something they think the king can assist them with. The king listens happily and talks to everyone, telling his secretary to take note of those people that need assistance or attention later. Both the king and the ordinary citizens accomplish a lot, and derive great pleasure when the king is in the field.

This is the difference between the times of the year when we get to see the King and how we get to see Him during the month of Elul.

The experience of seeing the king when he is in the field doesn’t compare to seeing him in the palace, beyond the gardens and fountains of his castle walls. In the palace, the king sits with all of his servants and guards. He is dressed in his royal garments, wearing his shiny crown jewels, accompanied by the royal symphony and surrounded by pomp and grace as he sits on his throne in the royal assembly room. In this setting, those who approach the king do so carefully and fearfully, with the utmost respect and formality.

Those city dwellers that live near the palace are the tzaddikim that inhabit the spheres of holiness, and remain in close vicinity to G-d. They don’t go out into the material world. These righteous people spend their days engaged in prayer in Torah study, and perpetually maintain a deep spiritual connection with Him.

Shabbos and holidays. On these days, when the gates of the palace are open and we have an opportunity to meet the King, we must first go through the preparations. We stop working, wash away the week and change out of our weekday clothes, divesting ourselves of our earthly thoughts and we enter into a higher state of consciousness. Some people have worked hard to attain the proper level elegance and refinement and their experience on Shabbos and Yom Tov is incredible, because they can enter into a closer presence of G-d and feel His glory and greatness. Most of us, unfortunately, might make it into the palace courtyard, where we can sense that there is something amazing taking place, but we aren’t ready to walk in the halls of the palace. We can’t experience G-d’s true majesty because we are too coarse, so we don’t experience the full presence of the King. Elul is a unique time. During this month, G-d comes down, so-tosay, into our villages; the King comes into the field. Hashem comes to see us as we are: at home, at the office, in the car, or wherever we might be. When the people see the king in the field, they don’t run home to take a shower or change into their best clothing because the

king doesn’t want that. He wants to see them in their overalls, as they are. When the king is in your presence it is disrespectful to ignore him or pretend you don’t see him and continue what you are doing. It is every subject’s duty to stop and approach the king to greet him. Spiritually, this means acknowledging that G-d is the King and we are His subjects. Each of us must accept upon ourselves the yoke of heaven, submit to G-d and recognize that our lives are about serving Him. On Shabbos or Yom Tov, we have to stop everything we are doing, prepare ourselves and do our best to recognize the King during our scheduled appointment. In Elul, the King is with us, as we are, and we can do this while we are involved in our weekday activities. During this month, we don’t need any special refinement or purification. For thirty days, G-d is walking in the fields, smiling to each and every one of us, waiting for each and every one of us to approach him. How do we connect to G-d during this time? In the middle of the workday, if the phones aren’t ringing and we have an extra moment, we can say some extra Tehillim with the recognition that Hashem is smiling and wants to hear every word we say. We find the time to study extra Torah, or go to a new class. We put a tzedaka box on the desk, and whenever we have some

time, we turn and stop, even if only for a moment, and greet the King. He is right there, smiling at us and all we need is a pure heart and the desire to get close to him. Even those of us who keep a distance from the King, who see Him in the field but are intimidated or embarrassed to approach, perhaps because we might not be in His good graces, have the same great opportunity in Elul. During this time, the King looks at all of His citizens with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. He wants everyone to approach Him, and He is especially welcoming and forgiving. He is warm even to those of us who are afraid or ashamed for whatever reason. We all have baggage. We suffer from addictions, patterns of negative behavior, desires and lusts that keep us away. The King knows His people, and He knows that some of us are bound in shackles that are holding us back and keeping us tied down, preventing us from coming close Him. In Elul, when the G-d is, so-tosay, out among the people, He welcomes all of us, even those that are keeping our distance. He sees and senses us, and sends us a smile and a wink, because He loves all of His people. As soon as He sees interest, a little stirring of the soul, He erupts with love and a huge smile. He sends his love deep into our souls and renews our interest, strength and vigor so that we can

get close to Him and serve Him as we should. This smile, a subtle invitation, is something only available to us during Elul. The holy Ari z”l explains that that the thirteen attributes of mercy, the highest form of connection that we have with G-d, are only fully accessible on Yom Kippur during the Neilah service and during the entire month of Elul. At the conclusion of Yom Kippur, a day when we are like angels, serving G-d without earthly distractions or desires, without food or water, every single Jew can gain entrance to the King’s chamber for a short period of time. During the month of Elul, we have the same access to the King without all of that. We are showered by the thirteen petals of divine mercy. The merciful King is with us and we can feel the compassion He has toward our souls. He is here to help us breaks through the cement, and all of the muck that blocks the inner longing of our neshama to get close to Hashem. G-d willing, this year before Rosh Hashana, when G-d goes back into His glorious palace, we will wake to the sound of the shofar, a call to smell the roses of Elul. We can’t miss this opportunity of such intimacy and closeness, and G-d willing it will propel us quickly to a tangible revelation in Yerushalayim , where G-d will build the third temple, his earthly palace, here, together with us •

Marriage: The tie that binds.

PARSHAS KI SEITZEI

It is the building-block of any nation and the foundation for its growth. Yet Jewish law restricts whom the children of Abraham may marry - even among those who share their own faith. The Torah tells us that neither an Ammonite nor Moabite male may marry into the direct descendants of Abraham. True they may marry other converts, but they can never enter a direct union with descendants of Klal Yisrael. The Torah tells us the reason for this restriction. "On the fact that they (Ammon) did not greet you with bread and water as you left Egypt and for employing (Moab) Bilaam the son of Pe'or to curse you" (Deuteronomy 23:4-5) One must truly wonder: according to the Torah, anyone is allowed to become a Jew. It requires acceptance of the mitzvos and the responsibilities that Judaism entails. Yet the Torah it seems, has great reason to disallow males who descend from the nation of Ammon and Moab from marrying direct descendants of Abraham. Surely it is solely not the refusal of bread and water or the employing of a sorcerer to curse the Jews. After all, the Egyptians enslaved the descendants of Jacob, nevertheless, Egyptian converts may marry Jews - albeit after three generations of waiting. Even converted descendants of our enemy Esau may marry the children of his nemesis brother Yaakov. What then is the inherent evil trait of Ammon and Moab that disallows their union with Abraham? A brilliant young student entered the portals of Yeshiva Torah Voda'ath in the 1940s. Hailing from a distinguished rabbinic family which instilled within him a creative mind, he questioned some of the arcane dormitory rules and restrictions that were imposed with boys of less character in mind. But rules, said the dormitory counselor, are rules and he wanted to have the young student temporarily expelled until he would agree to conform. An expulsion of that sort would have left the young man (who lived out of town) no alternative but to leave the Yeshiva.

They brought the matter before the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky. "True," he said, "rules are rules, but I owe this young man something." The dorm counselor looked stunned. "In the 1800s this boy's great-grandfather helped establish the kollel (fellowship program for married Torah scholars) at which I would study some decades later. I • 323-965-1544 •

owe his family a debt of gratitude. If the rules disallow his stay in the dormitory, then he will sleep in my home." An essential trait of the Jewish people is gratitude. The children of Avraham are instilled with it, whether it be gratitude to Hashem or his mortal messengers. However, it seems that Ammon and Moab have no sense of gratitude. Their forebear was Lot, Avraham's nephew who raised Lot and was saved him during a vicious war. Avraham taught Lot the spirit of hospitality and helped establish him in life. Yet Lot's children, Ammon, and Moab, showed no gratitude. In fact, they were eager to destroy Avraham's children - both physically and spiritually. There can be no fusion of those two traits. We can handle enemies. When an Edomite or Egyptian accepts the faith he can become a true partner in every aspect that bonds Jews - even marriage. But in the harmony of the Jewish family, in the building the future of our nation, there is no room for ingrates. Moabite women however, are exempt from the ban. It seems that they had no control over the decisions. How interesting it is to note that the Moabite convert, Ruth, the woman who showed tremendous gratitude toward her

mother-in-law was the precedent-setting example that lifted the ban on Moabite-women converts. Those actions of gratitude and understanding ultimately led to the birth of King David the forebear of Moshiach.

Elul Observances in a Nutshell

A

s the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking - a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. As the month of "Divine Mercy and Forgiveness," Elul is a most opportune time for teshuvah, prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all." The following are some of the basic customs and practices for the month of Elul: • Each day of the month of Elul (except for Shabbat and the last day of Elul), we sound the shofar as a call to repentance.

What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan?

• When writing a letter or meeting one another, we bless one another by including the greeting Ketivah vachatimah tovah-which roughly translates as "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year."

Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.

• Chapter 27 of the Book of Psalms is added to daily prayers, in the morning and afternoon. • The Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). • Elul is a good time to have one's tefillin and mezuzot checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use. • During the last week of Elul, in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, the Slichot prayers are recited, the first night at midnight, the following days in the early morning.

The Limited LEFT, RIGHT & THE POLITICS OF MISCONSTRUCTION

PARSHAS SHOFTIM 36

• 323-965-1544 •

info@communitylinks.info

n an era when political opinions are so clearly aggrandized -- one is pigeonholed as liberal or conservative, a rightist or leftist -- this week's portion shines a new perspective on right and wrong, and even left and right.

I

In describing the importance of following the advice of our sages, the Torah uses an interesting expression. "Do not stray from the path of their counsel, neither to the left or to the right." The Talmud espouses the faith we are to have in the wisdom of the sages by explaining: "Even if they tell you that left is right and right is left, and surely when they tell you that right is right and left is left." I was always puzzled by the interpretation. Theological insights into events are subject to interpretations as varied as the eye-colors of the viewers. Even rabbinical conjectures can be objectively understood from varied perspectives and lifestyles. But direction? How can we misconstrue directional accuracy? Either something is right or it is left. Back in the old country, a notorious miser was castigated by members of his community, for his lack of involvement in charitable endeavors. He was urged to begin inviting the poor to his home. He was even advised of how good the mitzvah would make him feel. Reluctantly, the next Friday afternoon he gave his son a few coins and told him to buy the cheapest piece of fish. He warned him not to spend more than an amount that would buy the lowest quality fish. He also cautioned him to buy it just before the shop was to close for the Sabbath when the price was sure to be at it's lowest. He was not to worry about freshness or appearance, just size and price. The son did exactly as he was told and brought back an excellent bargain: a large fish, thoroughly rancid.

Pleased with his purchase, the miser went to synagogue that evening and was proud to invite a pauper to his home. For the first time in memory he had a stranger actually eat with him. True to what he had been told, he really did feel wonderful. The beggar didn't. His weak stomach could not take the putrid fish and he became seriously ill. That Monday, the miser went with his son to visit the ailing beggar in the community ward of the local hospital. When the poor soul died of food poisoning, he proudly attended the funeral. He even paid his respects to the relatives who sat shiva at their hovel. Upon leaving the home of the mourners, the miser remarked proudly to his son, "Isn't it wonderful that we got involved with this beggar? Look how many mitzvos we have already performed. And it didn't even cost us more than a few pennies!" Often, perceptions of right and wrong are discerned, formulated, and executed according to a warped sense of justice. Personal perspectives, attitudes, and experiences greatly influence our Torah-values and attitudes. Political correctness often hampers proper rebuke. Is it that we would not want to offend an overt transgressor or do we just not want to get involved? Does overzealous rebuke stem from our concern for the word of Hashem? Or are we just upset at the individual because we have a debt to settle with him? When we see a definitive right and left, perhaps we are looking from the wrong angle. It may very well be that our right is the Torah's left, and the same is true of the reverse. We are told to follow our sages whether they tell us that right is left and left is right. In a confusing world, they may be the only ones who really know which way is east. •

A Tiny Fix and a Little Snip Two Elul Parables

The Hole In The Boat A man was called to the beach to paint a boat. He brought his paint and brushes and began to paint the boat a bright, new red, as he was hired to do. As he painted the boat, he noticed that the paint was seeping through the bottom of the boat. He realized that there was a leak, and he decided to mend it. When the painting was done, he collected his money for the job and went away. The following day the owner of the boat came to the painter and presented him with a large check. The painter was surprised. "You have already paid me for painting the boat," he said. "But this is not for the paint job. It is for mending the leak in the boat." "That was so small a thing that I even did not want to charge you for it. Surely you are not paying me this huge amount for so small a thing?"

"My dear friend, you do not understand. Let me tell you what happened.” "When I asked you to paint the boat I had forgotten to mention to you about the leak. When the boat was nice and dry, my children took the boat and went fishing. When I found that they had gone out in the boat, I was frantic for I remembered that the boat had a leak! Imagine my relief and happiness when I saw them coming back safe and sound. I examined the boat and saw that you had repaired the leak. Now you see what you have done? You have saved the lives of my children! I haven't enough money to repay you for your 'little' good deed...” A Piece of String

told to go up to the attic, where their old clothes were stored, and to help himself to some. He went up to the attic, and collected a neat bundle of clothes. After packing them into his bag, he searched for a piece of string with which to tie it. He saw a rope wound around a nail and decided to help himself to a piece. So he took out his pocketknife and cut the rope. Crash! There was a terrific smash, and the next moment the whole family rushed to the attic crying: "You idiot! Look what you have done! You have ruined us!" The poor boy could not understand what all the excitement was about. He said: "What do you mean, ruined you? All I did was to take a small piece of rope. Surely this did not ruin you?"

A wealthy merchant bought a wonderful candelabra for his home. It was a masterpiece, made of pure crystal and studded with precious stones. It cost a real fortune.

"You poor fish," replied the merchant. "Yes, all you did was to take a piece of rope. But it so happened that my precious candelabra hung by it. Now you have broken it beyond repair!"

Because of the candelabra's massive size, the ceiling in the merchant's dining room could not support its weight. In order to hang this beautiful candelabrum, a hole was bored in the ceiling, through which a rope was run and fastened to a beam in the attic.

These two stories, my friends, have one moral: Very often, by doing what seems to us a "small" good deed we never know what wonderful thing we have really done. And conversely, in committing what seems to us a "small" transgression, we are causing a terrible catastrophe. Both good deeds and bad deeds cause a "chain reaction." One good deed brings another good deed in its succession, and one transgression brings another. Each of them, no matter how seemingly small, may create or destroy worlds. Don't you think these two stories are worth remembering? •

Everybody who came to the house admired the wonderful candelabra, and the merchant and his family were very proud of it. One day a poor boy came begging for old clothes. He was

t was another dark day during the Second World War. A hungry Jewish boy named Binyamin Wertzberger was at work dragging heavy train tracks with his bare thin hands.

tion Camp in Upper Austria, which was labeled as "Grade III" (intended to be the toughest camps for the "Incor-

Wertzberger was thankful he had survived, but quickly learned that he was the only member in his family to remain alive. "I had a brother and 2 sisters and they were all murdered by the Nazis," he says, eyes closed.

When it came time to eat, he hurried with whatever strength he had left, although the food that was served was minimal and bland. He needed it to get through another day in the concentration camp.

After a long journey, he made it to Israel where he married and raised a family. "Baruch Hashem, they all learned in Yeshiva and lead a life of Torah and Mitzvos," he says.

Standing in line, a Nazi commander gave him and his fellow inmates a dirty look. "Do you dream of getting to your Jerusalem?" the vicious member of the German army asked.

When he retired from work, the family hoped he would spend more time with them, but Wertzberger had one more mission in life.

Wertzberger, who was born in Hungary, remained silent.

He walked over to the offices of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, the Jerusalem organization involved in physically maintaining and renovating the area of the Kotel.

"Maybe your ashes will merit to get there through the chimneys of the concentration camp," the Nazi officer went on to taunt the young Jew.

"I want to work for you," he told them.

Wertzberger recalls "going through hell; I was beaten, humiliated, starved and was forced to work in the most difficult circumstances." But he never forgot the Nazi's words. He swore that one day he would make it to Jerusalem. Years later he was exiled with thousands of others to the Austrian-Hungarian border. "We walked for days without food or drink. Whoever was tired or drifted off was shot to death. Bodies were piling up as we walked," he says. After a few weeks that seemed like forever, the now much-smaller group arrived at the Mauthausen Concentra-

Squad of the US 11th Armored Division, 3rd US Army, who liberated it after they disarmed the SS policemen.

The manager present looked at him strangely. "You are an elderly man. We don't have a job to offer you," Wertzberger was told. But he insisted. "I will do anything you ask. Just let me work here - You won't be disappointed," he said. Wertzberger was given the task of cleaning the stones of the Kotel, and he wakes up at 5 AM every day to do so. rigible Political Enemies of Reich.")

THOUSANDS ATTEND HISTORIC PIDYON PETER CHAMOR

A historic ‘Pidyon Peter Chamor’ event took Sunday, at the Klausenberg Camp in the Catskills. The event was attended by thousands, from a diverse range of backgrounds, currently vacationing in the Catskill Mountains. The rare event, was attended by dozens of Rabbonim and Rebbes, including the Kalusenberger Rebbe Shlit"a. The Peter Chamor was born to one of the animals from the Klausenberg Farm, run by R’ Ari Protovin and is located in the center of the Klausenberg Camp. The Cohen performing the Pidyon Peter Chamor, was Reb Baruch Yehuda Rubin of Boro Park. Who is Peter Chamor? A. Nobody. He doesn’t exist. It’s PEH-ter chah-MORE, Hebrew for “initiation of the donkey”—a Mitzvah, not a person. B. Peter Chamor is to first-born donkeys what Pidyon Haben is to first-born Jews. If the owner disowns ‘em, they go to the Temple. If he wants ‘em, he gives the Temple a sheep or goat instead. Positive Mitzvah #81. C. Before “holy cow!” there was “holy donkey!” This mitzvah distinguishes donkeys to pay tribute to their critical pack-animal role in the Egyptian Exodus. How do I redeem my donkey? 1. Qualifying Criteria Donkey must be the first born to Mr. and Mrs. Donkey. He must be male. He must be born naturally. He must belong to the Democratic Party. Just kidding. Owner must be an Israelite—Kohanim and Levites are exempt. 2. Hand it Over Today, the kohen serves as donkey collector in the Temple’s stead. Give him a sheep or goat (as long as it’s not dead, slaughtered or Caesarian-born), and Donkey’s yours to keep. 3. Make a Statement A special blessing is recited when the exchange animal is designated, even if it hasn’t yet been given to the kohen. Courtesy of Rabbi Mendy Hecht - AskMoses.com
