The Excitement OF Traveling to Israel

s”xc In a few days, I leave for Israel. I am excited. I feel almost as if I am going somewhere I have never been before. But this is not my first time traveling to Israel. What is it about this land that literally brings thrills and chills even after repeated visits? Some of my excitement stems from the opportunity to visit my youngest daughter who has been studying at a Seminary in Israel since August. Seeing her for the first time in four months is exciting, but this does not explain the full, tangible excitement I feel at my pending trip. For me, each visit to Israel has a fresh, newness. Part of this stems from our attempts to include a new journey to new sites within Israel on each trip. This year, plans include a trip to Kibbutz HaGroshim in the North of the Galilee with an excursion to the Golan. I have not been to the Golan Heights since 1980. So much has happened in the last 30 years. The Golan is home today to one of the great Kosher wineries, a ski resort, and numerous archaeological sites, among much more. Everyone is sharing that this is the greatest time to venture to the North as the hills are lush with greenery and rivers and waterfalls flow. The Kibbutz we will visit actually has a river, a tributary of the Jordan, which runs under glass through the hotel lobby. I am ecstatic about the opportunity to visit these areas with my daughter. There is always something new in Israel. Also special will be our staying for Shabbat at the Sephardic Educational Center in Jerusalem. After serving first as a consultant and then as a volunteer for more than 25 years for the Los Angeles programs of the SEC, I look forward to being at this historic site which formerly housed the offices of the Rishon L’Tzion, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi. Local Beverly Hills physician Dr. 9 December 17, 2010

Jose Nessim had a vision. He worked for years to purchase the buildings in the Old City of Jerusalem and bring them back to their historic usage with this international center which serves Jews of all backgrounds. His vision has been realized in magnificent ways. Those who are familiar with the Old City may recall the parking area where you often disembark from taxis taking you into the Old City. The SEC is the collection of large buildings right next to the parking area, just overlooking the Kotel. Thinking about our upcoming stay in the SEC brings me goosebumps. Some “old” visits also bring out the new. Being at the Kotel, the Western Wall, on the Friday evening one day after arriving in Israel is something to look forward to. While I have been at the Kotel for a dozen or more Shabbat evenings over the years, each time is something new and different. The Kotel is an international meeting place. Each time I am at the Kotel I see acquaintances from previous times in my life. I see former students with whom I studied in New York, colleagues I know from Los Angeles, and friends from different times and places in my life. Sometimes I see individuals I have not seen in 30 or more years. And sometimes, I see someone I saw just days earlier in L.A. The Kotel on Erev Shabbat is truly the central meeting point for Jews throughout the world. This year, we are staying at a condo in the Rehavia section of Jerusalem. That is also something new. As we have seen in pictures, it is a beautiful condo with three bedrooms, far more than we need. But it affords a more economical base for travels in Israel. We all stand with Israel in times of need. We cringe whenever the peace of Israel is threatened. We mourn when prison guards perish in a forest fire. But Israel is far more than a series of “bad

news” (may only good news and tidings come forth from Jerusalem!). All those I know in Israel have spoken recently of the booming economy, the peak real estate market, and the technology and other successes of Israel. Israel is a continuing success story where for so many dreams have been and continue to be realized. Seeing the new buildings and infrastructure that have emerged since last visiting Israel is part of the excitement during each stay there. A recent National Geographic issue focused on archaeological sites in Israel highlighted by recent discoveries from the reigns of Kings David and Solomon. For those who were doubters, the discoveries confirm the truths of the biblical accounts. My daughter has already inspected some of these historic sites with her Seminary class. I hope to have her share some of her recent experiences. What is new can also be very old. A trip to Israel is never long enough. I know that I will be looking forward to my next trip even while still on this trip. It is always that way. I hope to share my experiences during this trip with you. Of course, we all hope that soon we will indeed join together in Jerusalem with the coming of the Mashiach. That will indeed be the ultimate trip! What an adventure that will be!

I

n this week’s parsha, when Moshe stumbled across an Egyptian taskmaster beating a Jewish slave, he killed him and buried him in the sand. The next day, Moshe passed by two Jews who were fighting, he intervened, and they threatened to turn him in. When Moshe heard that, he became frightened and after Pharaoh found out, Moshe had to flee to Midian. Rashi gives two reasons that Moshe was afraid. (1) Moshe thought that nobody had seen him and now he was afraid that Pharaoh would find out and kill him. (2) The Medrash says he was frightened because he thought that perhaps the Jewish people were not worthy of redemption.

Bitachon Why is Moshe’s fear even mentioned in the Torah? Our forefathers and leaders had many emotions and feelings that we don't know about. What lesson is there for the future generations of the Jewish people to learn from it? We are commanded to have both emunah and bitachon in G-d. What is the difference? If a person is in any kind of trouble, to know that G-d controls everything, and that He has the power to protect and deliver any kind of salvation is emunah. Bitachon is to be completely confident and certain that Hashem will definitely help in every situation. This mitzvah is described in many places: In the classic works of Reishis Chochma, Shaarei Teshuva, Chovos HaLevavos and Rambam, amongst many others. The Chovos HaLevavos, in Shaar HaBitachon, writes “The essence of trust is the complete tranquility of the soul of the truster. His heart should be completely reliant on the one that he is trusting - that G-d is going to do what is good in any matter." For example, G-d forbid, if a person is waiting to hear back from a doctor about a particular test, the mitzvah of bitachon is that one should have absolute certainty and remain completely calm, knowing that everything will turn out fine. Or, if a person is already ill, G-d forbid, this person should remain completely tranquil and confident that Hashem will definitely heal them. The

14

December 17, 2010

mitzvah of bitachon applies to every worrisome situation – financial trouble, work related problems, our children, etc. There is a mitzvah to remain completely confident, with absolute menuchas hanafesh, that everything is going to turn out fine. On what basis can we do this? How can we be sure that G-d is going to deliver us from such a situation? Is there no such thing as reward and punishment? Furthermore, the Medrash in Vayishlach tells us that there were two people which Hashem had promised that he would remain with them and protect them, and nevertheless, they still feared - Yaakov and Moshe. Why did they fear? They were concerned that perhaps they had sinned. They didn’t trust themselves, and perhaps they had lost the protection. So, if Yaakov and Moshe, our greatest patriarch and our greatest prophet, were worried about their own sins, who are we to think that we are any better? On what basis are we to remain confident that G-d will give us livelihood, and health and success? The Chazon Ish, in his famous treatise on Emuna and Bitachon, explains that there is no basis to blindly believe that Hashem will always help. According to the Chazon Ish, bitachon is an extension of emuna. It is a state of tranquility, remaining completely calm in every situation not because we’re confident that we’ll be delivered from our problems, but because we know that whatever is going to happen, we're in Hashem's hands. G-d loves us and wants to take care of us and whatever He does is for our own good. G-d is the only one who has an impact and effect on our lives. Therefore, if a person finds himself in a dilemma, it is because Hashem wanted you in that dilemma. When we know that we are in Hashem's hands, we have nothing to be nervous about. All of the advice and opinions of friends, doctors and experts doesn't make a difference. G-d transcends nature and He can and will provide a miracle if this is what he wants. But, whatever happens, it is what G-d wanted for me. This opinion of the Chazon Ish is very well known, however, there are many who disagree with this interpretation. They clearly state that to be in a state of bitachon is to rest assured that Hashem is going to do good in the way that we see fit. We want to live long, healthy, happy lives. We must • 323-965-1544 •

believe that Hashem is going to take care of us with an apparent and revealed good, and not only should one believe that it is possible, but we should be completely confident that this is what will happen. This type of bitachon is extremely difficult. To have absolute confidence without nervousness or intimidation, to disregard the opinions of every doctor, friend or expert, to disregard knowledge of our own imperfections and indiscretions is very, very difficult work. However, if we can do this, and believe through the logic and the arguments, as a reward G-d will save us even if we don’t deserve it. There are many who explain bitachon this way: Sefer Ha-Ikrim says “The one who trusts in G-d, kindness will envelop him… it is the way of trust [in G-d] to bring an unknown, earned kindness.” He also writes that “if a person would have believed in Hashem as he is supposed to, the goodness would not have been withheld.” Rabinu Bachaya says “the one who trusts in G-d will be extracted from his troubles as a reward of him trusting. Even though the trouble was supposed to come upon him, and he was deserving of some pain and suffering, Hashem is going to turn everything around because he trusted in Him.” The Maharal writes in Nesivas Olam “How great is the attribute of trust in G-d! If you believe in G-d and trust Him with all your heart, everything is done for good for this person, because the person trusted in Hashem.” Medrash Yalkut Shemoni: “Anybody who trusts in my name, I will save, because he trusts in me” Yalkut Tehillim” “Many pains come to the wicked person, but the one that trusts in G-d, kindness will envelop him. Even a wicked person that trusts in G-d, has G-d's kindness envelop him.” The Chofetz Chaim in the name of the Vilna Gaon: “Bitachon is not dependent upon virtue. Even if a person is not worthy, but he holds onto his trust in G-d, the bitachon itself protects him and shields him, and G-d will do a kindness to this person.” The Baal Shem Tov explains that bitachon is so powerful that if G-d wants to punish someone with strong Bitachon, the punishment cannot come and G-d cannot harm info@communitylinks.info

him. To punish this person G-d will first have to test his Bitachon. In the Sefer Noam Elimelech, regarding the shimita/sabbatical year, he explains that if Jews have proper bitachon, then they are very happy when the shmita year comes. When we work the land for six years, our livelihood comes from G-d even though we need to physically toil in order to draw down the sustenance. If, on the seventh year, G-d commands us not to work, then we don’t need to exert ourselves to draw down his blessing. It will just shower into our lives and will serve as a source of joy. G-d says "I will command my blessing." This teaches us that when it comes to bitachon during shmita, even if one is impeding the blessing by not trusting in G-d, despite this, G-d says He will command the blessing against its will. Hashem will take care of us no matter what. The sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe explains that a person who is drowning will try to grab onto anything to stay afloat, even a little piece of straw that's floating by. Obviously, the straw isn’t going to help, but it’s something to try and grab onto. Even if he grabs the straw with faith, knowing that he will not drown, but he is grabbing the straw, and relying on G-d that He will protect him, that is not bitachon. That is tikva/hope. Bitachon is when there is nothing left, when you look around and there are vast oceans and waves in every direction. At that point, when a person gives his complete trust to a Hashem, knowing that he will survive, that is bitachon. Where hope ends, trust begins. Bitachon is to remain calm in body, mind and soul, always. We are supposed to exert an effort to help ourselves, but before and throughout, and even after hearing from every doctor, lawyer, banker, friend and expert, one way or the other, we must be completely calm and confident. Bitachon is to have absolute faith and absolute trust in Hashem, and to remain the same person, with the same smile, before, during and after every challenge and circumstance. To carry a belief and trust in G-d in this way is that the highest and deepest service of Hashem. The main purpose for the Jewish people on this world is for to bring G-dliness into the most physical domain of existence. That's why all of our mitzvos us are so physical. We put on Tefilin with our physical arms, we love G-d with our physical hearts, and we have to learn Torah with

15

December 17, 2010

our physical brain, and built a sukkah out of physical materials. Physical matter is the thickest husk that blocks G-dliness, and our job is to reveal Hashem in the physical world. There is no mitzvah where G-d reaches into the physical creation more then when a person is trusting in Hashem. The Talmud tells us that a thief can sit by a windowsill, ready to break into a house, and pray to G-d that he will be successful. The lesson is that that the nature of faith is that faith does not really have implications on a person's actions. Faith is something that is experienced deep in the G-dly soul and actions not by the physical body. So, it's possible for a person to have a schism between his physical self and his higher self. This thief, that believes in G-d deep within his soul, does not have G-d with him in his body, which is about to commit a sin. The faith doesn’t shine all the way through.

have a mitzvah to believe that G-d is going to be good to us in the way that we want him to be good to us, as a good husband will be kind and caring for his wife. Some people might argue that this is a very dangerous approach, because it isn’t realistic, or will cause great disappointment or disillusionment for people who believe with all their hearts and see things come crashing down. The truth is that we cannot be harmed by this faith. Why do we trust in G-d? Not because we want to trust or because it feels better. We trust in G-d because G-d commanded us to trust in Him and we cannot be harmed by fulfilling a commandment of G-d. Hashem will help those that trust in Him make the transition, and they will be perfectly capable of going into the emuna state of believing that it was the highest good that could have happened in their circumstance.

However, through bitachon, G-dliness permeates the earthy part of man so strongly that the person is physically relaxed, even though there is something so threatening to his physical life, that he should be trembling. That is why bitachon is even stronger than prayer. We can carry G-dliness within ourselves the entire day.

This is the lesson that the Torah is teaching us by telling us that Moshe was scared. He had done a good thing by saving a fellow Jew’s life, and a second good thing by stopping a quarrel. Moshe should have been confident in his proper actions. The fact that Moshe was scared was the reason that Pharaoh heard about it and wanted to kill him.

We know that G-d will provide us with the highest good. But, how do we know that the good will be something that we want in our lives. Sometimes the highest good, stemming from the loftiest places can expresses itself painfully in our world. How can we be confident that G-d will deliver the good that we want?

Had Moshe been calm and confident with the knowledge that nothing could harm him, the entire incident would've been forgotten and Moshe would have been protected. The entire reason that Moshe needed to run away was because Moshe was afraid.

G-d is married to us and he loves us very much, with a love that is beyond rational explanation, beyond reason. He chose us and He must take care of us in a way that we understand is good, not just in a way that He sees is good. Just as a good husband cares for his wife by giving her the things that she wants and sees as good, G-d also provides for us the way we want to be provided for. Does this contradict the idea that everything that G-d does is good? We have to differentiate between the past and the future. When it comes to the past, we are absolutely obliged to believe that G-d did for us the best thing that He possibly could have done. Even if it was painful, we know, with absolute certainty that G-d did this because there is no other way that He could have helped us. When it comes to the future, we • 323-965-1544 •

We have a mitzvah and an opportunity to completely trust in G-d every moment of everyday. We are confident that Hashem will not keep his children waiting for redemption even for one extra minute. May we merit today to dance together with all of the Jewish people in Jerusalem. Excerpt from "The Parsha In My Life" class by Rabbi Reuven Wolf. T

here is an interesting Midrashic interpretation of two words in this week's portion that seem to contrast starkly with their simple meaning. In fact, on the surface the interpretation seems even to contradict the simple meanings! Yaakov blesses Yoseph’s children and then tells Yoseph, "as for me, I have given you Shechem one portion more than your brothers, which I took from the Emorite with my sword and with my bow." Rashi explains that after the brothers attacked the city of Shechem in response to the assault on their sister Deena, the Emorites, a neighboring country, tried to conquer Yaakov at his time of weakness, similar to Jordan's joining against Israel in the Six-Day War. They, too, were miraculously defeated. So Yaakov tells Yoseph that he acquired those lands with his sword and bow. But Rashi and the Targum Unkeles, who is known for his almost literal translation of the Torah, deviate and translate the words bow and sword in a different light. Rashi explains they are wisdom and prayer, and the Targum explains the words as two forms of supplication. The allegory is understandable. Prayer surely surpasses the pen in its might over the sword. And some prayers, like a sword, are strong and sweeping and affect all those they strike. Others, like an arrow, reach one specific point from a far distance. The question is: we know that Yaakov prayed. Of course, he prayed! Yaakov’s prayers are documented

throughout the Book of Genesis. He prays throughout his encounters with his adversaries, yet this time he chose to talk about his battle prowess. Why then translate his expression of utensils of war as prayer? The Ponovezer Rav, Rabbi Yosef Kahaneman, of blessed memory, was renowned for his efforts in rebuilding Torah from the ashes of the Holocaust. He established the jewel in the crown of the Torah city of B'nai Berak by building the Ponovez Yeshiva and its myriad affiliate institutions. He built a Yeshiva for pre-teens, another for young men, and still a third for married scholars. He built the Batei Avos, a

huge housing complex with hundreds of subsidized apartments for needy families. He built schools for orphaned boys and girls in B'nei Berak, Ashdod, and numerous cities across the State of Israel. Often, he would visit wealthy patrons in the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Europe, and appealed to them to contribute monies for the Ponovezer Institutions. The story is told, perhaps apocryphally, that one particular donor once confronted him in jest. "Why is it, Rabbi Kahaneman," he wondered, "that all the other Rabbis and Roshei Yeshiva who visit me never mention money? All they talk about is Torah and mitzvos. But you come here and cut right to the chase. You don't talk about Torah or mitzvos. Your appeal, however, is, direct and to the point. You come here and say that you need one hundred thousand dollars to finish a girls school in Ashdod. Why don't you also give me a speech about Torah, mitzvos, and Jewish continuity?" Rabbi Kahaneman did not draw back. He took the man's hand and looked him in the eye. Then he told him a profound statement. "You know me well. Many fund raisers talk, 'Torah, Torah, Torah,' but they mean money, money, money. I talk money, but I mean Torah, Torah, Torah." Our Chazal, who understood the essence of Yaakov's being; who saw his deep faith in running from Esav, fighting with the angel, and confronting the tragedy of Shechem; and who appreciated his travail with Lavan, understood

quite well what his bow and sword were. They were very comfortable with the greatness of Yaakov’s persona, one steeped in a spirituality constantly connected to his Creator. They understood that when Yaakov said sword he meant the swift and sharp result of prayer, and when he said bow and arrow he meant the piercing cry of supplication. Every word, even the seemingly mundane words, of our forebears, were the foundation of our faith and are filled with spiritual meaning. Everything pointed to the One Above. It is when we as temporal beings preach prayer and espouse faith, that we must be suspect. Do we really mean prayer & faith or are we just talking prayer but thinking bows & arrows? •

Question: I'm getting conflicting messages on the mind/heart thing. The Sages encourage us that the mind should rule and guide the heart. Then they tell us that "G-d desires the heart." Which is it?

Mind or Heart? Answer: Actually, there is one mind and two hearts. There is the outer heart, that part of us that just reacts to the world, forever chasing whatever looks good to it, running from whatever looks bad and barking at whatever looks like it should be attacked. Then there is the inner heart, where the fire of the soul burns in serene simplicity, waiting for us to fan its flames. There is a gateway to the inner heart and its key is the mind. Without the mind, it is far too easy to fool yourself, to believe you are sincere and earnest when in truth all that leads you is a self-centered heart. All too often, we see how people justify the most unethical behavior by saying, "my heart told me this was right." But the heart to which they hearkened was the animal heart that barks in the forest. Often, it barks so loud, the inner heart cannot at all be heard. Which is why we need the mind: to sit and contemplate, to focus on the depth of what our inner heart is telling us, until its voice can be heard, amplified and crystal clear. Of course, we have seen many stuck at the gate, unable to proceed forward, as though the gate itself became the goal. Rabbi Zev Wolf of Nikolaiev told it as a parable. He told of the king who at the height of a one crazy, drunken party, announced that on a certain day anyone of his kingdom could come and take whatever they wished of the royal treasure. Then, the next morning he was sober and couldn't believe what he had done. Fortunately for him, his wise advisers came up with a plan. On the appointed day, the gates of the palace courtyard opened and the thousands who had camped out the night before poured in. Yet within a few seconds, they were dumb in their tracks. The most magnificent music they had ever heard wafted through the air while exotic birds flew overhead from one flowering tree to the next. The sights, the smells, and, most of all, the sound of the exquisite music that entered their ears, grabbed them as though they had been drugged and they could proceed no further. None of them save one bright young man. He plugged his ears with cotton and walked back and forth filling his wheelbarrow with fortune. "Fools!" he cried. "This is only the courtyard! The real treasure that can acquire all this and much more lies beyond!" The treasure of the palace, explained Reb Zev Wolf, that is the inner heart. The courtyard--that is the mind with all its games. Travel through the courtyard, but know your destination lies beyond... By Tzvi Freeman

o, it's time for another family outing. Sunscreen? Check. Snacks and water bottles? Check. Cash? Ummmmm.... Check. One second, I almost forgot the most important item of all... Camera and spare memory card? Check, check! After all, what value is there to a Kodak Moment if there is no Kodak? Every notable moment of the vacation – If there is no photo of the event, it never really happened and many of the not-so-notable ones – must be frozen in time for posterity. If the little one feeding the goat wasn't digitally captured the first time around, we must coax him (and the goat) to do a repeat. For if there is no photo of the event, it never really happened; it may as well have been a dream. (Ironically, as I was in the middle of writing this piece, the following was posted on my family's blog by the one arranging our family's annual summer get-away: "The Silberberg family will soon be invading the great Up North. Our destination is... The dates are... The way the weather has been, I would advise all to bring sunscreen, bathing attire, and cool clothes. Don't forget your cameras, too, as we plan to record memories...")

us going about our everyday business, while looking forward to those times when we can get away from the drudgery and enjoy some fun and quality family time. Yet when the awaited time arrives, one of our primary concerns is recording the moment—we're again looking forward to the future, seeking to ensure that we'll be able to re-savor the moments when we're back at home (at which time we will, of course, be hankering for the next vacation). Do we ever truly live in the present? Think: With the help of some clever advertising, we've come to define precious moments as "Kodak moments!" Children are a different story. It's yet to happen that any of my children (ranging from ages three to nine) should stop what they're doing and request that a picture be taken. They're too busy relishing the moment, taking it all in. Is it a wonder, then, that time flies for adults, while children experience each day as an eternity? A minute truly experienced lasts way longer than a minute that you have simply passed through while en route to another. Which leads me to wonder: Am I approaching Judaism and spirituality like a child, or like an adult?

How strange. Most of the time finds

If I honestly analyze my life, I can see that it's all part of one great plan.. The good deeds I do and the Torah I study are all leading somewhere The good deeds I do and the Torah I study are all leading somewhere. I might be motivated by reward in the next world, or the contentment and fulfillment that derives from leading a spiritual and selfless lifestyle. I'm building my spiritual photo album. Hopefully, all the pictures will be high resolution, and all graced with genuine smiles. But perhaps I'm missing out on something. Maybe I could just be living in the present. Our Sages tell us (Ethics 4:2), "The reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah." The chassidic masters explain this to mean that the truest reward of a mitzvah, the reward that surpasses by far all the other returns that a mitzvah garners, is the mitzvah itself. The ability to connect with an infinite G-d. The fact that a cosmic speck of dust can bring pleasure to the supreme King of kings—and thereby assumes utmost significance. Delighting in each mitzvah simply for what it is.

t was a test for the ages. The mighty Pharaoh commanded the midwives Shifra and Puah, known to us as Yocheved and her daughter Miriam, to kill all the boys born to Hebrew mothers. Not only did they ignore the edict, they countered it by nourishing the newborns with pacifying words and comforting amenities food and drink.. The Midrash tells us that they cared for the sick and unhealthy babies as well, nourishing them with prayers, and Hashem in heaven did not ignore their actions. But the verses need some explanation. First the Torah tells us, "And Gd rewarded the midwives, and the nation flourished and prospered." Only then does it add, "And it was as the midwives feared Hashem, and He made for them houses." Rashi explains that both midwives were rewarded for their efforts with more than physical houses. They were rewarded with houses of Kohanim and kings. Hashem rewarded them well with generations of kings and priests, Divine attributes that are perpetuated through the species of humans that the midwives actually saved male Jewish children! historical footnote inserted into the middle of the episode of heroism and reward. But the simple, juxtaposed text needs clarification. Perhaps there is a way to explain the historical insert

But there seems to be an interruption in the order of the verses. The words "and the nation flourished” seem out of context. In fact, Rashi is bothered by the obvious question and explains the verses as follows. "And G-d rewarded the midwives," and what was the reward? "He made for them houses." The words "and the nation flourished" are part of the narrative, an

For a while it was touch and go. The prayers of a community and thousands of friends and relatives pulsed the support systems that sustained the child's short breaths and the parents' deep hopes. For nearly two months the baby endured in the neo-natal unit under the care of the most prestigious doctors and devoted nurses that the city of Chicago had to offer. After two grueling months of prayers, incubators, and devoted healthcare, the baby arrived home healthy. The joy and gratitude to Hashem was overwhelming, but the young father did not forget his gratitude and appreciation to the mortal messengers, the entire medical and nursing staff, who worked arduously, day and night, to help insure the newborn's health.

"The nurses don't want perfume, and the doctors don't need pens," said Rabbi Svei. “What they want to see is the continued growth and health of your child. Every year, on his birthday, bring the child to the hospital and let the staff share in the joy of his growth and success! That will be the most meaningful gift you can offer!" The Rosh Yeshiva explained: Before the Torah mentions an additional reward bestowed upon the midwives, it alludes to the greater reward that they truly appreciated. Their efforts towards Jewish perpetuity were not in vain. The nation prospered. The young babies, whom they worked so diligently to sustain, grew up. And they married, and they flourished. All the midwives wanted was the propagation of their nation. And that was their first reward. The gift of Houses of the Priesthood and the Houses of Royalty were an added bonus which was Hashem was pleased to deliver. But as far as the midwives were concerned, the greatest reward was the joy in seeing that the children they delivered flourished, and that the nation prospered and grew. All the risks were worth it for that knowledge alone. And so the Torah tells us, "and Hashem made good for the midwives, and the nation grew and flourished." For them, that was the greatest reward. The rest was just icing on the just desserts •

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Cut the butternut squash, onions and apples in 1-inch cubes. Place them on a sheet pan and toss with the olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Divide the squash mixture between 2 sheet pans and spread it in a single layer. Roast for 35 to 45 minutes, until very tender. Meanwhile, heat the chicken stock to a simmer. When the vegetables are done, put them through a food mill fitted with the medium blade. (Alternatively, you can place the roasted vegetables in batches in a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Add some of the chicken stock and coarsely puree.) When all of the vegetables are processed, place them in a large pot and add enough chicken stock to make a thick soup. Add the curry powder, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Taste for seasonings to be sure there's enough salt and pepper to bring out the curry flavor. Reheat and serve hot with condiments either on the side or on top of each serving.
