Why do we have the opportunity to sin in the first place? Why did G-d create the things which He, Himself, tells us are not good?

What a Difference a Year Makes: The Elimination of Services for Young Children in California By Robert J. Rome, Ph.D.
O
ne year ago, I was privileged to coordinate a unique event in the community. Jewish leaders, parents, and educators gathered at Touro College in West Hollywood in early March 2010 to learn about resources available in the community for children with special needs under five years of age. Close to 100 gathered to discuss school and community services. Speaker after speaker gave hope to parents that there are abundant resources for their children. There was great excitement as the day ended. That was less than a year ago. One year later… Now, this year, when parents contact the state agencies designed to help their children, they are advised to call their health insurance. Instead of getting the treatment that can help their child, parents now often wait months on a waiting list for an appointment with a specialist. The local Regional Center used to provide two to three sessions weekly of speech, occupational, and physical ther-

apies to a child, for a total of six or more therapy sessions total weekly. Now, after state cutbacks and the elimination of services, a child is lucky to get one therapy session, that is one session of only one kind a week. Young children with early autistic-like symptoms now often get worse not better. With intensive speech therapy, non-speaking two year old children often rapidly gained speech skills, that is up until the current budget cutbacks. Now, with less intensive services, time on waiting lists, and group therapy instead of individual therapy, or no therapy at all, treatment success is now beyond the reach of many. California had been a pioneer in early childhood treatment. A system of regional centers oversaw the Early Start Program which administered a vast network of service providers. Public schools had programs that were the envy of the nation. That was then… Now, families are most often on their own. It is as if the schools are saying to families go out and prove to us that your • 323-965-1544 •
child needs help and we might then help you. As the services have been so dramatically cut back, there is no advertising or publicizing of resources in the community. There are no community education programs like the one we had last year. Most parents now don’t even know that some services may be available. I’m not naïve. Our state budget is in crisis. I know that the state has had to cut back. There simply is not enough money for everything to continue as before. But while children’s services are decimated (or worse), other things go on in the state as if nothing has happened. A single retired prison guard still may get more than $200,000 a year in pension. State law permits, I am told, retirees to get in pension 80% of their highest annual pay as their retirement as long as they live. The year before retiring, a prison guard can sign up for hundreds of hours of overtime and build up his final year’s pay. The 80% he then draws in retirement is more than he made per year in all but the final year beinfo@communitylinks.info
fore retirement. What has prison guard retirement pay have to do with early childhood services? The $200,000 typically made in a single year by one retired guard can pay instead for intensive speech and language services for 30 children. The state honors pension commitments, but commitments to young children no longer seem to matter. The number of state employee retirees receiving six figure pensions is now in the thousands. The legislature and elected leaders refuse to address the growing problem of meeting these outsized pensions. The pensions continue, but services to young children get eliminated. There are special interest groups to fight for the employees. But who fights for the three year old child or her parent? Was there previous waste in the moneys spent for young children? Yes. Parents often fought with attorneys for as many services as possible. The zip codes showing the most services provided per child were the wealthier zip codes where families often had many resources to draw on in their fight to help their children. Children from poor working families received fewer services than those who could hire attorneys to fight the state. This was not an appropriate way to determine who would gain treatment. There needs to be a decisiontree based on research which guides in the distribution of treatment to be most effective.

There was a need for change, but not for virtual elimination of services. There needs to be researchbased decision trees governing many aspects of the state budget and expenses. We need to take a look at the best way to fund pensions. We need to eliminate loopholes where individuals earn far more in retirement than they ever made on the job. We need to reconsider other areas of expense as well. While we cut classroom expenses that impact directly on the children, we go on building new schools at a record pace because school building comes out of different funds. Voter approved bonds enable new school construction. But once a school is built, general budget funds must be used for electricity and water at the school, for an administrative staff even before children attend the campus, and for many other expenses. Money is now being spent by the Los Angeles Unified School District to operate empty schools without a single student, while actual money for students is cut. I am reminded in the movie “Dave” when the man impersonating the President calls in his friend, a small town accountant, to search in the federal budget for money to cut. Using common sense, this Jewish CPA is able to cut millions from the budget to come up with money to pay for a desired program.

through proactive treatment. Helping a child with some problems to develop from this point on in a totally normal and appropriate way is exciting. With a little proactive treatment now, we can prevent more serious problems later.
Helping families with a disabled child is one of the important appropriate uses of government resources. Because the expense of helping the child is so great, we take a little from each of us so that the child can be helped without bankrupting the family. Many times, we can even prevent a disability from occurring through early intervention and overcoming the problem before it worsens. We can actually prevent disabilities
It has only been a year since the Jewish community celebrated the wide array of services available to young children and their families. We can only hope and pray that treatment services for young children fully return and that soon we will again have a day devoted to helping parents choose among the many resources available for their children. Amen.

Nobody would ever counsel a couple to have a strong argument every so often. A disagreement isn’t helpful in a relationship, and can result in a serious schism. Similarly, G-d doesn’t want us to sin. He commands us not to go down that path; to stay away from what He finds abhorrent, and to maintain a healthy relationship with Him. The Talmud states (Avoda Zara 4b) that the sin of the Golden Calf was an act far beneath the level of the Jewish people. Only a few days earlier, they stood at Sinai, where G-d spoke directly to every Jew; He infused each soul with G-dly energy, and said “I am G-d.” Now, suddenly, they are driven to worship the graven image of a calf!? It was as if they were unfaithful during their own wedding party! How was it possible for them to sin? The Talmud explains: They didn’t sin because of their own weakness; G-d created the perfect circumstances that made the sin irresistible to them. He increased their evil inclination beyond its natural strength, and gave it a potency to overwhelm them, and push them into sin. Why? The Talmud continues, and the commentators explain: this occurred to provide an opening for repentance. One who committed a grave sin might despair at the hopelessness of the situation – that G-d cannot not accept repentance for it because the relationship is damaged beyond repair. However, because G-d immediately accepted the sincere teshuva of the Jewish people for their sin with the golden calf - a sin which represented the complete and ultimate rebellion against G-d – therefore, there is hope for anyone. The simple lesson is that a person can never falter beyond repair. The sin of the golden calf is empowerment for anyone to teshuva, no matter what. G-d is just. We must say that Hashem did not cause an entire generation to sin and go through such pain and misery, extreme spiritual loss, and then necessitate thousands of years of
14
February 11, 2 0 1 1
rectification just to help a few people in later generations. They did not volunteer to suffer for the benefit of others. It’s clear that there is an even deeper lesson to be learned: We must say that this opening for teshuva, which was gained through the incident of the golden calf, was to the benefit of even that saintly generation. Through their process of sin and a sincere return, they attained a level of relationship with G-d that was previously inaccessible to them. Our sages tell us that "In the place where baalei teshuva stand, even the perfectly righteous cannot stand" (Brachos 34b). What is the true power of teshuva? The answer is connected to the purpose of life. Before birth, a person’s soul is plucked from the higher worlds. These spiritual realms are a place where the
holy “spark.” It is the divine interest that causes that particular phenomenon, substance or being to exist, G-d’s investment into that creation. In heaven, truth is apparent, that G-d is the only reality, and if something else appears to exist, it is because in the vast eternal plan that G-d has for the universe, it serves His desires and interests. The sparks shine brightly in heaven. On our world, however, many things are covered and blocked by a klipa, which literally means shell, because it conceals the spark like the shell of a nut covers and blocks the fruit inside. Because of the klipa, matter can appear to be isolated and disconnected from G-d. Our job, as the Jewish people, is to peel away all of the shells and uncover the inner G-dliness that is at the core of every being. We accomplish this in a very practical way: by applying whatever we can to the service of G-d.
Brightening the Darkness A deeper look into the mistakes we make light of G-d shines brightly, where the soul can bask in its glory and relate to Him on a level that, down here, we can never understand. Suddenly, the soul is thrown into our physical world, a place of concealment, where G-d’s presence is hidden, and His radiance and glory are not apparent. The purpose of this traumatic journey is for each soul to do her part of revealing G-d’s presence in the physical world; to transform the seemingly mundane, physical world into a holy one, where G-dliness is fully revealed and G-d can dwell, or so-to-say, feel at home. The challenge is not primarily focused on bringing G-d here by drawing down the light from above. Rather, the ultimate purpose is to uncover the (unapparent) G-dliness that has always been here, since the beginning. As the Kabbalists teach us, within all physical and spiritual matter, there is a • 323-965-1544 •
Many mundane things can be directly revealed through a mitzvah, like using wood to make a sukkah, money for tzedakah, leather for tefillin, wool for tzitzis, or flour for challah. Some things are elevated in a more indirect way. Our cars and our homes support us in the service of G-d, as do our jobs and the food we eat. By relating to our possessions and our relationships as means and opportunities to serve Hashem and implement His wishes, we reintroduce them into spirituality and bring to light their innate holiness. Certain things remain off-limits. The Torah tells us what foods are not kosher, and what activities and relationships to refrain from. If G-d forbid, a person gets involved with these things, a space is created that G-d will not manifest Himself within. Eating nonkosher food, pursuing a forbidden relationship, or engaging in any other info@communitylinks.info
sinful activity supplies the klipa in our world with a powerful energy, and strengthens the blockages. Furthermore, by engaging and empowering them, they cover up our own soul’s ability to relate to G-d. These negative activities and objects cannot facilitate divinity, and only increase darkness in the world. G-d has clearly defined what He doesn’t want us to get involved with, and the best we can do with these things is to push them away. The life of a tzaddik is purely within this domain - doing mitzvos, transforming the mundane aspects of the every-day world into something spiritual, and rejecting that which is negative. The baal teshuva, however, has a much greater influence on making this world holy than the tzaddik. The true baal teshuva has returned to a place where the tzaddik will never venture. Yes, there is an absolute rule G-d clearly says that some things that are despicable and disgusting to Him. They are antithetical to Him, and can never join the realm of holiness. He warns us that if we persist and pursue them, He will be very unhappy with us, and our relationship with Him will become blemished. But one who, for whatever reason, has fallen into the unholy and the negative, has the opportunity to propel it into a pure and powerful good. The Talmud tells us (Yoma 86b): “Great is Teshuvah! For even deliberate sins are transformed into good deeds.” The implications are astounding! A person (with the proper kind of teshuva) can not only erase his own sins, but completely transform them into mitzvos! The very same negative energy that only moments ago was disgusting to G-d, has been purified and transformed into an active channel for G-dly light! Why do we have the opportunity to sin in the first place? Why did G-d create the things which He, Himself, tells us are not good? Because without them, we wouldn’t have the choice to do the right thing. We would be no different than the angels of the higher worlds, who see and experience G-dliness in every aspect of their existence. They have no free will – G-d is their only reality. The negative things that we are drawn to and experience in our world, which we are commanded to stay away from, are ultimately only here to push us towards the good things we are supposed to interact with. The mitzvos are G-d telling us, so-to-say, who He is. For example, when Hashem commands us to wear Tefillin, or to light Shabbos candles, it is because, on some level, He enjoys it. Obviously we must understand that mystically, behind the leather straps, or the candles, these mitzvos draw forth a very deep, divine energy and pleasure that we cannot comprehend. In our world, we are given only a physical representation of the divine Will, so we can relate to it in some way. By doing Hashem’s mitzvos, we connect to Him and His interests even though we don’t necessarily see what is truly taking place.

Similarly, when we are commanded to stay away from something, it is because of the “divine distaste“ for it, because it doesn’t represent the truth and oneness of G-d. Although, evil doesn’t even truly exist, it’s strictly a façade created to challenge us, and make us better through avoiding it.
yearning to reunite, and when the couple does make up, the resulting bond makes the relationship deeper and stronger. The original act itself was bad. Now, after the reconciliation, looking back on it, the act brought them to a deeper connection. It was ultimately and effectively a positive part of their connection and not part of a disconnection.
G-d gives us a full buffet of choices, but He only wants us to choose Him. We must work to be sharp enough to recognize that everything else is completely false, and to completely reject it. When a person embraces the truth, it has a huge impact on the world. He reveals Hashem in the world. All the more so when a Tzaddik does it. Furthermore, by rejecting the unholy, ultimately, we completely dissipate its existence.
All of this is possible because it is a result of the sin and then teshuva of the golden calf. Even the eruv rav - the mixed multitude of tag-alongs that instigated the sin - were forgiven and elevated because of it. They reached spiritual heights that would otherwise have been impossible
What happens, if G-d forbid, someone does sin? The person enters a zone that is devoid of truth, and ultimately, existence - literally experiencing a taste of death. However, simultaneously, a very powerful opportunity presents itself. Because this soul, an entity of truth, has separated herself from G-dly reality and entered into a space that’s dark, one where G-d is blocked, and the truth is gone, she is now yearning for it. The soul is thirsting for divine light, but it can’t access G-dliness because a barrier has been put up. A klippa which was energized by the sin now stands in the way. The bigger the sin, the less experiential G-d becomes in our lives. That’s why, G-d forbid, if someone sins, it’s becomes harder to pray, more difficult to experience the joy of Shabbos, and generally challenging to feel the connection of G-d to our everyday lives. Nonetheless, as the sinner covers up the soul and creates the blockages, simultaneously the soul is intensifying her yearning to reconnect with G-d. The more isolated and disconnected a person gets, the greater the longing of the soul. This ache might simmer quietly for a long time under the rubbish. Eventually, there will come a time, without question, that this soul can no longer cope with her detachment. She will erupt with a desperate force of desire and passion for G-d with an intensity that a tzaddik cannot have because the tzaddik always quenches his thirst. G-d is always accessible to him. The baal teshuva, who entered into the realms of death, visited the muck of the world and interacted with it, was drawn back to Hashem with a greater passion than ever before, because of it! Sometimes in a marriage, a couple experiences their deepest connection only after a quarrel. As a result of a poor choice of words or disagreeable behavior, their relationship may experience coldness and a separation. If they have true love, however, as a result of that separation there is a greater
16

The fact is that many times a disagreement doesn’t lead to reconciliation, but only to destruction. Sin is very dangerous and not a correct path to choose. G–d tells us not to go there, He commands us to stay away. He warns us that it will bring both physical and spiritual pain and suffering, and it does. However, the potential and the possibility exists that if, G-d forbid, a person does sin, he or she will be able to achieve a deeper and stronger connection to Hashem, one that a tzaddik doesn’t have. No matter what happens to us, or what choices we make in our lives, we are on a journey moving towards a deeper connection with Hashem. G-d forbid, we ought never to sin, and we must run away from it. Then again, looking back at our mistakes, we must realize that we have the power to not only erase the past but to redefine it, and turn all of our baggage into propelling forces that forever deepen and intensify our relationship with G-d. May we all see the ultimate transformation of all darkness into light very quickly, with the coming of Moshach. ________________________________________ Excerpt from "The Parsha In My Life" class by Rabbi Reuven Wolf. arriage is a pretty bizarre concept. It must have been G-d's idea. Who else could think of such a wacky plan like bringing together two opposites and putting them under one roof to share a life? And who else could invent an institution as beautiful and powerful as marriage? It's wacky-but it works. It is precisely its absurdity that makes marriage an experience not to be missed. One of the most exciting aspects of marriage is the discovery of the profound differences between men and
love. But we should ask: what is it that makes us different? Is it just social conditioning that makes a man a man and a woman a woman, or are we born that way? Is masculinity a hormone, a feeling, or a way men are educated? Are women trained to be feminine or do they innately know how themselves? There are many theories on the gender issue. In the works of Jewish mysticism, or Kabbalah, the question is dealt with extensively. The Kabbalah's approach is both unique and revolutionary. It says that the source of
Although every individual is unique and we don't all fit into over-simplified definitions, in a general sense there is a clear distinction between male and female spiritual postures. Their diverse soul-sources translate into two very different personas. Perhaps it can be expressed like this: Men are more removed souls; they are geared to provide the direction in the relationship. Women are more involved souls; they have the capacity to bring presence to the marriage. This becomes clear as we analyze and
A Wild Idea
The Kabbalah of Marriage women, and learning how they complement each other. These differences are not just biological. On every level of our being--intellectual, emotional, psychological and spiritual--men and women seem to be from different planets. You don't have to be married to realize this. We see it in our parents, our siblings, and our friends. But only in marriage do you start to appreciate and enjoy these differences. What you made fun of in your little sister you may love in your wife; and the things that made your brother an obnoxious brat could make your husband into the man you

male/female identity is beyond both nature and nurture. It is our very soul. Men and women have totally different soulroots, and that is why they are different.
contrast the respective natures of men and women. There are certain situations in which this contrast becomes more obvious and exaggerated. Let's look at a few examples.
In Kabbalistic terms, men's souls come from the world of divine transcendence; women's souls come from the world of divine immanence. Transcendence is the divine quality of being beyond; immanence is the equally divine quality of being present. These are the male and female aspects of the Divine, and are reflected in man and woman respectively down here in the human realm.
In the lead up to their wedding, Joanne complains that Eddie doesn’t seem so excited. When it comes to choosing the menu, Eddie tells Joanne that she can decide on her own--he really doesn't mind if the salad is served with French or Italian dressing. The color scheme is totally up to her, he'll go along with whatever she likes, even if it's mauve (he's not even sure what 'mauve' is). Joanne is running to see

how the invitations turned out, and Eddie doesn't even bother to look at them. When she shows them to him he doesn't even notice the watermark in the paper that spells their names in calligraphy. Any mention of the wedding and she is overcome with excitement; meanwhile he hasn't even bought a suit yet. Eddie can't help it. It isn't that he isn't excited--he is, in his own way. But Eddie is a man. He is excited to get married, but for him getting married has nothing to do with a menu or decorations. It is an event--the details don't interest him. But for Joanne, every detail of the wedding makes the event. In each detail is the stamp of her personality. She is involved. He is removed. Another example: Adam and Lisa just attended a self-help lecture. The speaker spent an hour and a half suggesting strategies to improve your life. Lisa is on fire, inspired, and ready to start implementing major changes in her life. Adam is still wondering how much the speaker gets paid per appearance. When asked how he found the speech, he responds with words like "interesting," "well-presented," "entertaining"--all distant and impersonal assessments. Lisa may or may not ever change her life, but she definitely thought about it. For Adam, the ideas were good, but it would take time and great effort to even realize that those ideas may apply to him too. Adam is removed. Lisa is involved. Raymond and Tammy are together reading this very article. By the look on Tammy's face you can see exactly what she is feeling. She is infuriated. All these generalizations and blanket statements about men and women. I don't fit into these stereotypes! After three paragraphs she walks away. "I can't read this junk," she says. Raymond, not hearing her outburst or noticing her departure, reads on. His face is mostly blank--the only reaction he offers is a slight raise of the eyebrows. He finishes the article,
25
February 11, 2011
not even realizing that this paragraph was written about him, and moves on to look at the advertisements. He may have agreed with the article, or maybe not. You would have to ask him to find out. Raymond is removed. Tammy is involved. Tammy is right. We don't all fit exactly into these molds. In fact, we each have elements of both gender groups--our male and female sides. But in a general way, there is a male and a female attitude. The male is removed and aloof. The female is present and involved. There is nothing wrong with either attitude. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it's good to be removed. When it comes to seeing things in context and making judgments, aloofness and objectivity are essential. You can only see things for what they really are when you remain outside of them; once you are involved you can no longer see the big picture. This is the strength of the male soul--distance that allows objectivity. But objectivity has its downside too. You'll get nowhere if you stay on the sidelines of life and remain a spectator. To be alive and real means getting involved, and for this you need to come down out of the world of theory and immerse yourself in the moment. This is where the female element comes in. It is her sense of involvement and presence that gives life colour and personality. It is the woman who makes life real and vibrant, who takes things from the analytical to the experiential, from theory to practice. Marriage is the ultimate partnership between the two worlds of immanence and transcendence. By each partner learning to share his/her unique perspective while appreciating and connecting to the other's parallel perspective, husband and wife become a perfect balance of complimentary universes. The man guides the woman, the woman leads the man. Man gives • 323-965-1544 •
perspective, woman gives experience. One without the other is an incomplete picture. Together, they form a unit that has the best of both worlds. With this definition of male and female we can understand two ancient Jewish traditions. In the days before the wedding, it is customary for the groom to be called up to the Torah in synagogue, and for the bride to immerse in a Mikvah. On the surface, these two activities seem worlds apart. Saying blessings over a Biblical scroll and dunking in a ritual pool hardly resemble each other. Why such diverse practices for man and woman? Perhaps one answer is that these acts are a way for bride and groom to plug in to their respective spiritual sources, to emphasize and nurture the unique contributions each party will bring to the future marriage. The man is to provide direction and stability to the marriage, so he plugs in to the ultimate source of direction and stability--the Torah. The woman is to bring vitality and experience to the union, so she immerses in life-giving waters. His is an act of theory--a reading. Hers is an act of total envelopment–-an immersion. He has connected to the source of transcendence; she to the fountain of immanence. It is no small feat to unite man and woman--two opposites as diverse as heaven and earth, heart and mind, theory and practice. We prepare ourselves by first dipping into our respective spiritual sources--the holy words of Torah and the sacred waters of Mikvah. At the Chuppah, a canopy of divine light fuses our souls together as one. Then, after the wedding, we have a lifetime to learn how to work together and discover the wonder and beauty of two worlds becoming one. A pretty wild idea. A pretty good one, too. • By Aron Moss

t takes a lot to build a Sanctuary in the desert. And it takes perhaps, even more to adorn the Kohanim who serve, in beautiful vestments that both symbolize deep spirituality while depicting splendor and glory. You need more than golden threads and fine tapestry. You need more than the ability to weave and design ornate garments. You need devotion, and you need heart. Not ordinary heart. Not the heart that pennant winners have or athletic coaches call for. You need a special type of heart. You need a heart filled with wisdom -- Divine wisdom. That is why Hashem commands Moshe to gather "all the wise-hearted people whom I have invested with a spirit of wisdom" to make the priestly garments (Exodus 28:1). But the Torah is unclear. Were these select people Divinely ordained with a spirit of wisdom for this particular mission, or were intrinsic "wisehearted" people imbued with an extra
spiring message, approached the famed Magid. "The sages tell us," began the skeptic, "'that words from the heart, penetrate the heart.' Rabbi," he snickered, "I assume that you spoke from your heart. Your words, however, have had no impact on me whatsoever! How can that be? Why didn't your words penetrate my heart?" Rabbi Kranz smiled. In his usual fashion, he began with a parable. "A simpleton once went by the workplace of a blacksmith, who was holding a large bellows. After a few squeezes, the flames of the smith's fire danced with a rage. The man, who always found it difficult to start a fire in his own fireplace, marveled at the contraption. He immediately went and purchased the amazing invention. Entering his home, he smugly announced, "I just discovered how to make a raging fire with the simple squeeze of a lever!"
The Heart Before The Force "spirit of wisdom"? If the former is correct, then what did Hashem add? And if all their wisdom was divinely-gifted, then why didn't Hashem simply ask Moshe to "gather all the people in whom I have invested a spirit of wisdom"? Rav Sholom Shwadron, the Magid of Jerusalem, of blessed memory, once told a story about the famed Dubno Magid, Rabbi Yaakov Kranz. The Dubno Magid once spoke in a town and a few maskilim (members of the enlightenment movement) attended. After the talk one of the cynics, who was totally unaffected by the warm and in-

He set a few logs in the cold fireplace and began to push the two ends of the bellows together. Nothing happened. The logs lay cold and lifeless. Embarrassed, the man returned to the blacksmith and explained his predicament. "I want a refund!" he shouted. This blower doesn't work!" "You yokel," laughed the experienced blacksmith. "You were blowing on cold logs! You must start a small fire on your own! If you don't start with a spark, a fire will never erupt!" The Magid turned toward the maskil and sadly shook his head sadly. "If there is no spark, the largest bellows will not make a fire." In telling Moshe whom to choose info@communitylinks.info
for the sacred task of designing the Mishkan, the Torah tells us how G-d invests. He wants people that were imbued with a ruach chachmah - a sprirt of wisdom. But he prefaces the statement by telling us how one receives spiritual wisdom. The gift of spiritual wisdom does not go to just anyone. Hashem looks for those who have wisdom of heart. Those who understand what it means to be kind, compassionate, and loyal. Those who have the devotion to His will and the desire for more enlightenment get His ordination. The people who were imbued with Hashem's Divine spirit previously had a spark. And from that spark grew a force - a Divine force - that propelled wise hearts into a Divine spirit of wisdom. Hashem tells us that we must begin the process on our own. If we supply the heart, He will supply the power to have deep, spiritual, even holy insight. He will supply the force. We must make sure, however, that we put the heart before the force. • Rabbi Mordechai Kaminetzky www.torah.org

n what is probably the most anti-climactic event in Jewish history, the nation that was about to receive the Torah from Moshe turns away from the will of Hashem. After 40 days they begin to worry that Moshe will never return and they panic. They create a new leader for themselves -- The Golden Calf.. The Torah describes the scene in Exodus 32:6: "The people offered (the calf) peace offerings and they sat down to eat and drink and they got up to revel." Hashem immediately commands Moshe to descend Mount Sinai in order to admonish his corrupt nation. As Moshe comes down the mountain he hears tumultuous shouts emanating from the people who were celebrating their new found deity. His student, Yehoshua, also hears the sounds and declares (Exodus 32:17) "the sound of battle is in the camp." Moshe listens and amends the theory. He tells Yehoshua, "It is not the sound of victory, nor the sound of defeat: I hear the sound of distress." When Moshe sees the Golden Calf he breaks the Tablets and restores order, sanity, and the belief in Hashem. What is strange about the episode is
the contrast of the sounds made and the sounds heard. If the Jewish People reveled and celebrated then why did Yehoshua hear sounds of war and how did Moshe hear sounds of distress? They should both have heard the sound of celebration and festivity. Rav Chaim of Sanz had a custom: he would test the local children on a monthly basis. The children would recite orally from the Mishnah or Talmud and Rav Chaim would reward them generously with sweets and money. Once a group of secular Jews decided to dupe Rav Chaim. They taught a Talmudic selection to a gentile child and reviewed it with him until he knew it perfectly. They dressed him like a Chasidic child and had him stand in line with all the other children to be tested. The rabbi listened to the young boy intently. The other children were puzzled: they did not remember this boy from their cheder, yet they were amazed at the remarkable fluency he displayed in reciting his piece. Rav Chaim was not impressed at all. He turned to the young man and said, "please tell your father that there are better ways to earn a few coins!" With that he dismissed the child.
The secularists were shocked. "How did the Rabbi know?" Their curiosity forced them to approach Rav Chaim. Rav Chaim smiled as he answered them. "There are two ways to say the Gemorah. One is filled with spirituality. The child's body is swaying and filled with the emotion of Torah. The other is just repetitive rote. This young man lacked the fire and the true joy that the Jewish children have when learning Torah. I knew he was not one of ours." The Jews got up to revel around the golden calf. Moshe and Yehoshua however knew the difference between true joy -- simcha -- and confusion. The Jews revel were in essence distressed but it was masked with drinks and noise makers. True joy is coupled with a certainty and a sense of direction; something lacking for those Jews celebrating the idol. The Jews may have gotten up to celebrate, but it was no celebration. It may have looked like a party to the untrained eye, but Moshe knew the true sound of joy. It did not exist with the Golden Calf. True joy is the harmony of spirituality and contentment. Superficial sounds of euphoria and celebration are heard by those with true insight as sounds of battle and distress. •

DoubleTake
Can you spot the differences in these two pictures?
HILLEL ACADEMY Last week, the students of Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy were honored with a visit from Jacob Dayan, Israeli Consul
General,
Fontiadou,
Greek
and
Elisabeth
Israeli
Consul
General. The Consuls General came to officially thank the students for their messages of hope and support sent to the firefighters in response to the recent fires in Carmel, Israel. At the assembly, the students read excerpts from the letters including words of greeting in Greek! The Consuls General were both very moved and touched by the support from the Hillel students. They spoke to the students about how one action can make a world of difference and how these letters gave the firefighters and Israel strength and support during a time of need.
