et me preface my article with the caveat that I myself, and my family are Torah observant Jews. As a professional, who meets and observes individuals from a large cross-section of the Jewish population, I have become aware of a growing phenomena, detrimental to the Jewish people that is quite concerning to me. I took Latin in high school. In my third year of Latin, we read and translated from the original Latin each word of Virgil’s Aeneid. Every word was treated with respect as we sought an exact translation and became absorbed in the richness of this great work which tells of the origins of Rome. While we read Homer’s The Odyssey in English translation in English class, we discussed together in class every adventure. We knew that the work combined the real with fantasy (e.g., there was no such thing

as a Cyclops as just one example of the unique fantasy “characters” within this classic work), but we appreciated the literary brilliance of Homer in developing these characters and stories within stories. We tend to read all kinds of classical works with great respect. We read Shakespeare’s plays as if they are not only great literature, but also as a source for the history of the periods described. The words of Macbeth or Hamlet are cherished. We are taught to memorize key sections and quotes. Somehow though, and very unfortunate for our generation and for the Jewish generations to come, many Jews have very limited Torah knowledge, and have not accorded a divine Torah with the kind of respect given these other works created by man. Something different happens for many Jews when reading the Torah. The Torah is the essential component

of Judaism that was revealed by G-d to the Jewish people at Sinai. This Divine revelation at Mount Sinai is the quintessential event which clearly defines the Jewish people, the relationship between G-d and the Jews, and the importance and the role of the revealed Torah within Judaism. However, Reform and Conservative philosophies, Jews speak of “divine inspiration” instead of revelation, seeing the Torah as “inspired” but not given by G-d. In reality, it has been my experience that many Jews treat the Torah as neither revealed nor inspired. They show the Torah little respect. Many read the Torah’s depiction of Creation by citing Darwin to “prove” that the Torah “cannot stand up to modern scientific knowledge.” Whole sections of the Torah are outright dismissed by these non-believing Jews. They criticize the Torah for not being historical (in their

view) and for not being a work of science. A whole field of biblical criticism has emerged where many Jews and non-Jews study the Torah not to find the meaning in the Torah, but rather to criticize what they see as missing from the Torah. Since the mid-1800’s, colleges have offered courses in the “Old Testament” the courses have been centered around “Biblical Criticism” a school of thought that originated among certain Christian scholars which viewed the Torah as the works of multiple authors “J,” “E,” “P,” and “D.” They divide the Torah into at least four sections where the first has the primary name employed for G-d as the fourletter name for G-d only spoken by the High Priest on Yom Kippur. These sections describe a strong G-d who enacts punishment against those who transgress. Other sections call G-d Elokim and are less involved with a punishing G-d. Still other sections reflect the Priestly laws, while other sections are seen only in Deuteronomy. The Torah is described by the Biblical critics as not a single work given by G-d at Sinai, but rather in their opinion, the Torah is a loosely tied together work from different authors. The Torah, according to the Biblical critics, was not revealed at Mount Sinai. It is, in the view of the Biblical critics, a poorly edited work which still shows its many roots.

Many traditional Jews see this pursuit of JEPD as antisemitic at heart. Discredit the Bible and you discredit the people of the Bible, the reasoning goes. A quick check of history shows that Wellhausen, a pioneering Biblical critic indeed had anti-semitic tendencies. However, not only anti-semites employ the techniques of Biblical criticism. Many Jewish institutions, including Hebrew University in Jerusalem, either have courses in JEPD or insert the teachings of this discipline into the courses they have. We can read in Homer about muses whose musical chants are heard as ships enter the vicinity of the harbors guarded by the muses. We read in Shakespearian comedies about faeries. We still show respect for these works, even though we know that neither faeries nor muses exist. Yet, when these nonbelieving Jews read in the Torah about the world being created in seven days, they quickly point out that this contradicts what “clearly” has been established by science. The Creation story details the centrality of the human being to the created world. The Flood story speaks of the rainbow as G-d’s guarantee that He will not use a flood to destroy the peoples of the world again. The Torah teaches truths regarding the place of humankind in the world, the value of life, • 323-965-1544 •

the importance and value of work animals, etc. The Torah presents the relationship between men/women and their Creator. The Torah presents men and women of character and distinction, our forefathers and foremothers that have and will continue to serve as role models for all the generations. There is so much to learn from the Torah. Yet, we find that few of these biblical critics accord the Torah even the kind of respect reserved for major classical works. Our Hebrew Bible has been referred to as the greatest book ever written. It may be too much to expect that disbelievers will accord full respect to the Torah. The Bible is not a work of science or history. It is the blueprint that G-d gave to the Jewish people. It can shape our lives. Restoring the Bible to its rightful place will enrich us greatly. Increased study of the Torah text will be good for all Jews. Indeed all people will benefit when we restore the grandeur traditionally ascribed to the Torah text.

Sins of Greatness

T

his week the Torah teaches us about sins and offerings. It tells us about how a human is supposed to respond to misdeeds. It tells us about all types of people who make mistakes and sin. High Priests and princes as well as simple Jews are subject to failures and so, in addition to penitence, each sinner on every level must bring an offering. When referring to the average sinner the Torah teaches the halacha by beginning the laws with the words, "If a man shall sin" or "when a man shall sin." It uses the Hebrew word "im," (Leviticus 4:27) or "ki" (Leviticus 5:21). However when it comes to "a prince amongst the tribes" who is the sinner, the Torah uses a different expression. It does not use the standard words for if and when, rather it uses a totally different expression "asher." "Asher nasi yecheta -- if that a prince sins, and commits one from among all the commandments of Hashem that may not be done -- unintentionally -- and becomes guilty" (Leviticus 4:22). The word asher, is quite similar in fact to the word "ashre," It means praiseworthy. That point is not lost on the Talmudic sages. Rashi quotes the Sifra, "If that a prince hath sinned: The word "Asher" is connected in meaning with "Ashrei" which means praiseworthy. The verse implies the following connotation: Praiseworthy and fortunate is the generation whose prince (king) takes care to bring an atonement sacrifice even for his inadvertent misdeeds.” That is surely praiseworthy, especially to those of us who live in a generation pock-marked with scandals of denials and cover-ups. But if that is the case, why not use the term “asher” in reference to the bringing of his pertinence, not referring to the sin itself ? Isn't it the admission of guilt that merits praise, not the actual misdeed? There are many variations to this story. The basic premise, however, is well known. In the city of B'nai Beraq there are many Bar Mitzvah celebrations every Shabbos. It became very difficult for Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievski, the elder sage known to world Jewry as the Steipler Gaon to attend every Bar Mitzvah. In fact, he was old and weak and hardly had the strength to go to shul. One week, a Bar Mitzvah boy was honored with the

maftir. Immediately after the davening, the Steipler Gaon was standing there in line, waiting to wish him Mazal Tov. The Steipler Gaon bent down and began conversing in earnest with the neophyte member of the adult Jewish community. It seemed to the hushed crowd that this was much more than a perfunctory Mazel Tov wish. The boy paled as he shook his head several times in amazement. "Of course, Rebbe!" he exclaimed. "Of course! There is no question. I feel terrible that the Rebbe felt he had to discuss this with me!" The Steipler thanked the young boy, wished him Mazel Tov again, blessed him, and left the shul.

FOR 2 YEARS IN A ROW HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED IT YET?

The entire congregation was shocked. What could the Steipler have wanted? "Let me explain," began the boy. "Six years ago I was davening in this shul with a very large siddur. The Steipler approached me and chided me for learning Gemara in the middle of the Tefilah. I showed him that it was a Siddur and that I actually was davening. He apologized and left. Today the Steipler came to my Bar Mitzvah and reminded me of the story. He explained to me that even though he apologized for his mistaken reprimand six years ago, it was not enough. Since, at the time, I was a child under Bar Mitzvah, I did not have the frame of mind to truly forgive him. Even if I did forgive him, it had no halachic validity. The Steipler found out when my birthday was and waited for six years until my Bar Mitzvah. Today, I am halachically old enough to forgive him, and so, he came back today to ask my forgiveness!"

Sometimes the praise of our leaders is not the fact that they bring a sin offering, but rather in the entire sin and absolution process. It is important for us to understand, not only that they ask forgiveness, but what they did wrong and how they rectified their misdeed. We are praiseworthy when we have leaders that understand what is considered wrong, and openly teach us through their actions how to respond. When the process is comprehensive, then the combination of the mistake and the absolution can be considered praiseworthy, for they are acts we can all learn from. 3201 Camino Del Sol, Oxnard CA 93030 (805) 983-1560 www.herzogwinecellars.com

O

nce upon a time there lived two kings who had a long-standing dispute over a border territory. Each claimed that the disputed territory belonged to him. Finally, after many battles which resulted in much human loss and drained their royal treasuries, they decided to end their fighting and make a thorough investigation to find out who had the right to the land in dispute. In the course of the investigation, one of the kings discovered that he was a descendant of Haman, the son of Hamdatha the chief minister of King Ahasuerus in Shushan, the capital of ancient Persia and Medea. The discovery made the king very happy. "Now I will capture two birds in one net," he said to himself. "First of all, I will take revenge for my ancestor Haman, whom Mordecai and Esther sent to the gallows, together with his ten sons. Secondly, I would force the Jews of my land to pay me a large sum of money each year by way of compensation. That should certainly turn their happy festival of Purim from gladness to sadness." The king immediately issued a decree that the Jews in his land must pay ten thousand silver kikar (talent) to the royal treasury on

22

the day of Purim. At the same time, the Jews had to deliver to the King a Jew named Mordecai to be hanged on that day.

Originally published in Talks and Tales, Published and Copyright byKehot Publication Society, Brooklyn NY 11213

On hearing the cruel decree, the Jews cried out in horror and despair. They knew that three things help to annul a cruel decree: Repentance, Prayer and Charity. So they began an intensive move to improve their ways, to pray with greater devotion and give more charity than they had done before. They also sent messengers to the great Rabbis in other lands begging them to pray in their behalf for a miraculous delivery from their distress.

In an Instant

Two of these messengers came to the famous Gaon Rabbi Moshe Isserlis (ReMO) in Cracow (Poland). They told the famous Rabbi their sad story. In reply, the ReMO told them that he could not help them. But he advised them to go to see a poor tailor who could help them. The ReMO told them where the tailor lived, and added: "If the tailor will not immediately agree to help you, tell him that I sent you to him." When the two messengers reached the tailor's poor, tumble-down shack, the tailor received them rather coldly, saying, "I see that your clothes are in no need of mending, so why

have you come to me. It is a pity for both you and me to waste our time. You see I am busy." The messengers tearfully related their sad story of the terrible decree, threatening the Jewish community in their country, adding emphatically: "The saintly ReMO sent us to you." Hearing the name of the ReMO, the tailor stood up and his whole bearing changed. "Go home in peace," he said in a friendly tone. "The Almighty has already accepted your prayers, and everything will be alright." II The day of Purim was fast approaching, and the Jews' fear grew from day to day. If they did not deliver the fine, together with a fellow Jew named Mordecai to be publicly hanged, the cruel king had vowed to drive them all out from his kingdom without mercy, and to take over their possessions. The Jews gathered in the synagogues, and prayed to HaShem as never before; while the cruel king was looking forward with glee to the public ceremony he had prepared for the hanging of a Jew Mordecai. That night the king could not fall asleep. When he finally did so, he awoke almost immediately and was terrified to see a saintly-looking old, strange Jew standing near his bed, with a mysterious smile on his face. Baffled and terrified, the king threw a quick glance at the clock, wondering whether it was day or night. Then he quickly jumped out of bed and grabbed a sword which was hanging on the wall. He ran to the door intending to attack the bodyguards for allowing the Jew to

23

enter the king's bed-chamber. But the minute he opened the door, a strong whirlwind lifted him up in the air and carried him aloft. In deadly fright, the king passed out. When he regained consciousness, he found himself in an abandoned ancient cemetery, which was surrounded by high stone walls. This threw him into an even greater terror, and he began to shout: "Help! Help!" But no one answered. For many hours he felt very confused and full of despair. He was also tortured by hunger and thirst. His clothes were torn and ragged as he tried unsuccessfully to climb the high walls. Again he began to call out: "Help! Save me!" But all that came back was a deadly silence. Suddenly he saw that strange old Jew he had seen in his royal bedroom. The stranger was carrying a basket of bread in one hand and a jug of water in the other. This time, the king was happy to see him, and he begged him to save him from his desperate situation. The Jew paid the king no attention. He just left the bread and water and disappeared. The following morning, after a most dreadful night, the old Jew again came, bringing bread and water. Again, without speaking a word, he disappeared. The same thing was repeated again on the third day. This time, the old man asked the king: "Do you wish to say anything?" The king went to pieces, fell to the feet of the old Jew and begged him for mercy. "I have sinned terribly against the innocent Jews in my country," the

king said. "But I swear that I will nullify the decree against them and will treat them with justice and kindness in the future. Please, Please, free me from this hell. I cannot bear it any longer." "If you will give me this assurance in writing, with your signature, I will free you and you will again be king in your country," the Jew replied. "This I shall most gladly do," the king answered. He immediately wrote out a new decree, canceling the previous decree against the Jews, and promising never again to issue any harsh decree against them. After signing the document, the King handed it to the Jew. No sooner had the king done this than he felt a strong wind lifting him up and carrying him away. He became terrified and fell into a faint. When he recovered, he found himself in bed in his royal palace. Near his bed stood the same mysterious Jew who had entered without permission the night that the king had first been carried off by a whirlwind to the distant, awful cemetery. In his hand, the Jew held the document that the king had given him. The king turned to the old Jew reproachfully: "Why did you have to torture me for such a long time?" With a mysterious smile on his lips, the Jew raised his hand in which he held the document and, pointing to the clock showed him that the hands on the clock's face stood at the same position as they were the instant when the king was carried away from his palace. Full of astonishment, the king realized that the entire terrible experience had lasted just one instant! •

A Fateful Party It all began in Ancient Persia in the 4th century BCE. The Holy Temple that had stood in Jerusalem was destroyed more than 50 years earlier, and the Jews were subjects of the mighty Persian empire which extended over 127 lands. Three years after King Ahasuerus ascended the Persian throne, when he felt secure in his new position, he celebrated by throwing a grand 180-daylong party for all his subjects. Following this extravagant gala, Ahasuerus hosted a smaller weeklong party for the residents of the capital city of Shushan. In the palace's women's quarters, Ahasuerus' wife, Queen Vashti, hosted her own party for the Shushanite womenfolk. On the seventh day of this party, Ahasuerus' heart "was merry with wine," and he commanded his wife Vashti to appear before all the partying men—he wanted to show them all her exquisite beauty. Vashti balked at this request, and at the advice of his advisor Memuchan, Ahasuerus ordered Vashti's execution.

The Purim Story The Beauty Contest When Ahasuerus' wrath dissipated, he was lonely for a wife. His servants suggested that he orchestrate a beauty pageant. Officers would be appointed in all the king's lands, and all beautiful girls would be brought to Ahasuerus. And the girl who would find favor in the king's eyes would be the new queen.

March 11, 2011

The leader of the Jews at that time was a Shushanite resident named Mordechai. He had a cousin, Esther, who was orphaned as a young girl. Mordechai raised her and treated her as a daughter. Though she had no desire to be the queen, Esther was forcibly taken to the king's harem, to participate in the contest. While all the other contestant beautified themselves with perfumes and lotions, Esther did nothing. But G‑d had His own plans. When Esther appeared before the king, he im-

mediately liked her, and Esther became the new Queen of Persia. But as per Mordechai's directive, Esther refused to divulge her nationality—even to the king. Mordechai to the Rescue Shortly after Esther became queen, Mordechai overheard two of the king's chamberlains discussing a plot to assassinate the king. Mordechai had them reported, and the traitors were hanged. The Anti-Semitic Prime Minister Meanwhile, Haman, one of Ahasuerus' ministers, was promoted to the position of Prime Minister. Haman was a virulent Jew hater; in fact he was a descendant of the notoriously antiSemitic nation of Amalek. Immediately after his promotion, the king issued a decree ordering everyone • 323-965-1544 •

to bow down whenever Haman appeared. Now Haman would walk around with a large idol hanging from a chain around his neck. When Mordechai, a proud Jew, refused to bow down, Haman was infuriated. He resolved to take revenge against all the Jews and threw lots to determine the "lucky" day when he would implement his plan. The lot fell on the 13th day of the Hebrew month of Adar. Haman approached Ahasuerus and offered him 10,000 silver talents in exchange for permission to exterminate the Jews. Ahasuerus, who was no friend of the Jews either, told Haman, "The money is yours to keep, and the nation is yours to do with as you please." Haman immediately sent proclamations to all the king's land. These declarations, sealed with the royal signet ring, ordered the people to rise up against the Jews and kill them all – men, women, and children – on the following 13th of Adar. Mordechai's Request Mordechai became aware of the decree. He rent his garments and donned sackcloth. He sent a message to Esther, asking her to approach the king and beg him to spare her people. Esther responded that according to the rules anyone who entered the king's presence un-summoned would be put to death—unless the king extended to that person his golden scepter. "And I," Esther said, "have not been summoned by the king for thirty days already!" Mordechai sent another message: "Do not think that you will escape the fate of all the Jews by being in the king's palace. For if you will remain silent at this time, relief and salvation will come to the Jews from another info@communitylinks.info

source, and you and the house of your father will be lost. And who knows if it is not for just such a time that you reached this royal position." Esther agreed to approach the king. But she asked Mordechai to gather all the Jews in Shushan and let them all fast for three days and nights. And after this fast Esther would put her life in her hands and approach the king. Mordechai complied with Esther's request. He gathered the Jews of Shushan – especially the children, 22,000 of them – and they fasted, repented and prayed to G‑d. The First Feast After three days of fasting, Esther donned royal garb and entered Ahasuerus' chambers. Immediately, the king extended his scepter. "What is it?" Ahasuerus asked. "What is your request?" "I would like to invite the king and Haman to a small feast I have pre-

pared," Esther responded. So the king and Haman joined Esther for a wine-feast. During the feast, the king again asked Esther whether she had anything to request. "Yes," Esther responded. "I would appreciate if tomorrow, again, the king and Haman would join me for a feast. And then I will tell the king my request. Haman left the party a happy and proud man. Oh the honor he was being accorded! But standing at the king's gate was Mordechai – who still refused to bow to Haman – and Haman was enraged. When he arrived home, his wife and wise advisors counseled him to erect a gallows, and then to go to the king and request permission to hang Mordechai. Haman excitedly went ahead and put up the gallows. The Beginning of the End Sleep eluded the king that night, so he asked his servants to read for him from

the Royal Chronicles. They complied with the king's orders. They read from the Chronicles how Mordechai saved the king's life when two of his chamberlains hatched a plot to kill him. "Was he rewarded for this fine act?" Ahasuerus asked. "No he was not," the servants responded. At that moment Haman entered the king's courtyard. His purpose? To ask the king's permission to hang Mordechai! Before Haman could utter a word, Ahasuerus addressed him: "My Haman, in your estimation, what shall be done to a person whom the king wishes to honor?" Haman, who was certain that the king wished to honor him, responded: "Bring royal garment and a royal horse. And let one of the king's nobles dress the man and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, 'So is done for the man whom

the king wishes to honor!'" "Great idea," Ahasuerus responded. "Now go get the garments and the horse and do so for Mordechai the Jew!" Haman had no choice but to comply. On the next day he went and honored Mordechai as the king had ordered, and then immediately rushed to join the king and Esther for... The Second Feast "What is your request?" a curious King Ahasuerus asked Esther at the feast. "If I have found favor in your eyes, O King," Esther pleaded, "and if it pleases the king, let my life be granted me by my plea, and the life of my people by my request. For my people and I have been sold to be annihilated, killed and destroyed!" Esther then identified Haman as the evil person who wished to perpetrate this atrocity. The king was greatly angered. When he was then informed that Haman had

built a gallows for Mordechai, he ordered that Haman be hanged on that very gallows. The Tables Are Turned On that day, Haman's estate was given to Esther, and Mordechai was appointed Prime Minister in Haman's stead. But Esther was far from satisfied. Haman was dead, but his evil decree was still in effect. According to Persian law, once a king issues a decree it can not be rescinded. But the king gave Mordechai and Esther permission, and they promptly wrote up a decree that countermanded Haman's edict. The decree granted the Jews permission to defend themselves against their enemies. And by this time, considering that all knew that the queen and Prime Minister were both Jewish, no one would prevent the Jews from doing just that! And the Jews in Shushan were oh so happy. Celebrations abounded!

The Battle On the 13th of Adar that year, the Jews throughout the Persian Empire mobilized and killed the enemies who had wanted to kill them. In Shushan, among the dead were Haman's ten sons. Esther asked the king's permission for the Jews in Shushan to have one more day to destroy their enemy—and the king acceded to her wish. On that day, the 14th of Adar, the Jews worldwide celebrated, and the Jews of Shushan killed more of their enemies, and also hung Haman's sons. The Jews of Shushan then rested and celebrated on the 15th of Adar. In Commemoration Mordechai and Esther established a holiday to commemorate these amazing events. Jews worldwide celebrate on the 14th of Adar, while residents of walled cities – like Shushan – celebrate on the 15th of Adar. This holiday, called "Purim," is the most joyous holiday on the Jewish calendar. •

COMMUNITY 1 ST A NNUAL J EWISH E DUCATOR AWARDS S TUDENT E SSAY C ONTEST : W INNING S TUDENTS ARE FROM H ARKHAM H ILLEL H EBREW A CADEMY AND Y ESHIVA O HR E LCHONON C HABAD The Milken Family Foundation and the BJE (Builders of Jewish Education) launched a Jewish Educator Awards Student Essay Contest this fall. Participation was open to middle and high school students at BJE-affiliated schools in greater Los Angeles. Middle school students (grades 6-8) were asked to write on the subject: “Who Is Your Jewish Hero and Why?” Ilan Atri, a middle school student at Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy, won the competition in the middle school category with an outstanding essay about his personal Jewish hero – his father. High school students (grades 9-12) were asked to discuss “What Does It Mean to be a Jewish Leader?” Menny Chanazow, a student at Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon Chabad, eloquently reflected on the meaning of Jewish leadership. The two student essay winners were presented with $500 each from the Milken Family Foundation to contribute to the charity of their choice, and each school that the students attend was awarded an unrestricted gift of $1,800 in honor of the prize-winning essayists. The Jewish Essay Contest, promoted by BJE to middle and high schools, was judged by Julie Gruenbaum Fax, Senior Writer at the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, Eileen Horowitz, Luisa Latham, and other volunteers. Student winners were announced at a community luncheon sponsored by the Milken Family Foundation. The Foundation and BJE also presented four Jewish day school educators with $15,000 Milken Educator Awards at the program. For more information about

Teach by Example Ilan Atri Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy I recently became a Bar Mitzvah. At my celebration, as I called my father up to light his candle, everyone watched as he slowly made his way to the table. His walk was ungainly, but everyone noticed only the pride in his heart. Standing in front of my friends and relatives, I proudly spoke of how my father not only told me to be a good Jew, but how he showed me by example every day of my life. I believe now, more than I ever did as a young child, that the greatest Jewish hero in the world is my dad. Why? My dad was born prematurely, when his mom was pregnant for only six months. Because of this, his legs did not develop normally, and he is unable to walk like everybody else. He limps and gets tired after walking only short distances. However, nothing stops my dad when it comes to being an observant Jew, and for this reason he is my true Jewish hero. When we moved to the United States from Mexico City twelve years • 323-965-1544 •

ago, we found a suitable apartment in Los Angeles. This apartment was a good distance from shul, and we lived on the 6th floor! But these obstacles never stopped my father from walking back from shul on Friday nights, to and back from shul on Shabbat mornings, and to shul Shabbat afternoons. Every Shabbat, my dad walked seven miles, which for him was like walking twenty miles. Even if it is pouring rain, sweltering hot, or bitter cold outside, he still walks to shul. I have never heard my father complain. He continually illustrates his commitment to being an observant Jew, making me want to emulate him throughout my life. My dad always taught me the importance of being Jewish. As I studied for my Bar Mitzvah, he encouraged me and stressed the significance of becoming a bar mitzvah. More importantly, he has always showed me by example how to be a pious Torah Jew. Even though he is highly educated, sometimes my father had to take jobs that were not suited for him. However, he chooses work that allows him to keep Shabbat. I remember once he had a great opportunity to work at American Express, but he turned the offer down because if he worked there, he would have to work on Shabbat and on Chagim. He has been teaching and showing me that nothing is more important to our family than our religion and beliefs. Ever since Pre-1, my father has made it his priority to make sure I receive a Torah education in a fine Jewish school. He has willingly sacrificed so he can afford thousands of dollars info@communitylinks.info

COMMUNITY a year so I can learn the six hundred thirteen mitzvoth and the thirteen midot. I thank him for teaching me Torah values and showing me by example that I should always follow my beliefs. My dad doesn’t tell me how to live. He lives and tells me to watch him. He is not only the greatest Jewish hero, but he is the greatest person in the world.

A Leader’s Compassion Menny Chazanow Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon Chabad The leaders of Jewry throughout the ages exhibited a multitude of honorable qualities. Some displayed astounding courage and self-sacrifice. Others possessed profound intellects and grasped even the most mystical and complicated of concepts. They were utterly dedicated to their faith and epitomized the idea of being a pious and God-fearing Jew. There is only one quality, however, that truly entitles a man to stand among this lofty group. This character trait transcends common sense and physicality and depends solely on the heart. A Jewish leader's

defining characteristic is his ability to care. In most circumstances the word 'relationship' describes the connection between two entities. These entities relate to each other—they have something in common. As a result, a link forms between them. Yet this is as far as it goes. This link is weak and delicate at best, and can dissolve in a second if the individuals but lose the common ground that unites them. When all is said and done, these two beings are just that: two separate beings. In their respective cores, in the nucleus of their realities, they are worlds apart, each with its own unique existence that nothing and no one else will ever really be a part of. Deep down, they don't mean much to each other. The relationship between a Jewish leader and follower, though, is an exception, for this is a connection based on deep founded and entirely unconditional love, not unlike the bond parents and children share. To a Jewish leader, followers are not separate entities. At his core, the leader is not removed and apathetic towards them as though they were merely a crowd, a blurred and faceless mass whose inner-

most thoughts and desires are of little consequence. In fact, the antithesis is true. A Jewish leader's disciples are part of him. He is not his own, distinct entity, but one made up of millions of smaller ones. Thus, when a person has a difficulty, a need, or a want, the leader doesn't see just another follower among many, with just another problem among many. He sees it as though he himself had this problem, as though he himself was hurting, and he solves this problem and soothes this hurt as he would for himself. A reporter once asked the Lubavitcher Rebbe what title would be most appropriate for him. Was he a leader? A teacher? A role model? The response would astonish some, but to me it’s just proof to what I’ve always believed. “I,” replied the Rebbe, “Am a best friend.” This is a Jewish leader’s most amazing ability, his defining attribute, and his legacy. It’s not his divine foresight or his piety. Nor is it his brilliance. It's the simple fact that he is the shepherd who thinks not that 'my flock needs to be fed' but that 'this sheep is hungry and this sheep is hungry' and so on. He’s your failsafe, your ubiquitous pillar of support. He cares. •

PARSHAS TZAV

Pure

A

s the laws of the korbonos progress through the ensuing week's Torah portions, we find more and more complex issues that deal with esoteric spirituality. The concept of animal sacrifice is difficult for us to comprehend, and the sages of yore, included Maimonides and Nachmanides deal with the concepts, rationale and purpose of them in great detail. This week, in addition to defining the various laws that distinguish different types of sacrifices, the Torah tells us of the concepts of tumah and taharah, loosely translated as spiritual purity and impurity. Of course, these laws have nothing to do with sanitary conditions, rather they define a state of spirituality that varies with the state of life and death. The Torah tells us that the meat of a sacrifice that will contact any tamei shall not be eaten.

ion

The law is that when tahor meets tamei, pure meets impure, tamei prevails and lowers the tahor to a state of tamei. The Kotzker Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Morgenstern, was bothered: why so? Why is it that tumah depreciates taharah? Why is it not the opposite? When purity meets impurity, it should automatically purify it? Let the impure become elevated with its contact with purity.

Rabbi Shaul Kagan, of blessed memory, was the Rosh Kollel of Kollel Bais Yitzchok in Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to his being a brilliant Talmudic scholar, he was very witty. As a member of the Kollel, I was a student of his, and he once related the following story to me: A man was committed to an insane asylum due to his aberrant behavior. After months of treatment the doctors felt he was cured and allowed him to leave. The man, however, refused to go. "I will not leave this institution unless you sign a document that I am sane," he declared. The doctors had given him a clean bill of mental health and figured they might as well acquiesce to the strange demand. Not long after his release, the man went for a job interview. After answering the questions quite impressively, the man leaned toward his prospective boss and asked in earnest. "Now that you asked me about myself may I ask you a question?"

leaders who should guide us on high moral ground. We thought they were tahor. Unfortunately, however, what we may think is pure, innocent and holy is sometimes not.

"You see, mister," declared the applicant while proudly displaying his signed document, "you only think that you are normal. I have a certificate!"

Therefore, explains the Kotzker Rebbe, when bona-fide tumah attaches to something that is at best hopefully and assumedly pure, definite impurity prevails and defiles that what was assumed tahor.

The Kotzker Rebbe explained that when it comes to the world of pure and impure there are facts we know for certain, and there are particulars we can never be sure of. The world of purity, unfortunately is not as assured as the world of impurity. We may think something is actually pure, we may assume that it is untouched and unhampered. However, we may never truly know the truth. We do not know its history; where it went; what it touched or what affected it. We are shocked with horror at the deeds of youngsters who were deemed innocent and pure, or

When asked if an item is kosher, I have heard others reply. I know that it is under supervision. I hope that it is kosher! In a world of mixed-messages and confusing signals, we can try to cling to perceived purity. And we can hope and pray that the role-models and values that we have chosen are the correct ones. But we surely can keep away from those ideas and actions that are clearly defined as impure. Those deeds can leave an impact powerful enough to taint the purest of neshamos. And we can avoid them. After all, they have a certificate! •

The supervisor was a little taken aback but replied, "I surely think so. Why do you ask?"

• 3 eggs • 1 cup granulated sugar • 3/4 cup vegetable oil • 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1/2 cup orange juice • 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 cup fruit preserves, any flavor

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. 2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until lightly and fluffy. Stir in the oil, vanilla and orange juice. Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the batter to form a stiff dough. If dough is not stiff enough to roll out, stir in more flour. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4 inch in thickness. Cut into circles using a cookie cutter or the rim or a drinking glass. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets. Spoon about 2 teaspoons of preserves into the center of each one. Pinch the edges to form three corners. 3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Allow cookies to cool for 1 minute on the cookie sheet before removing to wire racks to cool completely.
