A Seder Without Wine

A band of 300 brave souls, in rotating shifts of 50, have remained behind at the Japanese nuclear plant to do what they can to keep the disaster from getting worse. n times of calamity and danger, there will often be a few who step forward to protect and save others, even at the risk of their own lives. In times of war, such individuals are often awarded the Medal of Honor. Their actions are so self-less, their protection of their fellow soldiers so great that the nation pauses to recognize their special actions in the saving of lives. We recall how in the midst of 9/11 as thousands ran down the stairs of the World Trade Center buildings, scores of “first responders” went up the stairs to assist others in the evacuation. When the buildings subsequently collapsed, these first responders perished, but not before saving the many thousands who were able to leave the buildings with their help. Almost every war and major battle, nearly every natural disaster, and each man-made calamity yield stories of exceptional courage and bravery. In dangerous times, a band

8

April 8, 2011

of special individuals often step forward to go “beyond the call of duty” to protect the safety of their fellow men and women. A band of 300 brave souls, in rotating shifts of 50, have remained behind at the Japanese nuclear plant to do what they can to keep the disaster from getting worse. They have worked tirelessly and without regard to their own safety to try to restore the cooling systems of the various reactors to prevent a full melt-down of the reactor cores. They have done their best to keep the radioactive releases into the atmosphere to a minimum. If they can succeed in connecting electricity to the cooling system, they can prevent the need for additional hundreds of thousands of Japanese from being forced from their homes 20 or more miles from the reactors. So great is the danger, I have read, that these workers can often only work 15 minutes at a time. Even with • 323-965-1544 •

Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

precautions, many have been exposed to radioactive water that has seeped into their boots and protective gear. These workers are well aware of the dangers, and yet they have not left even though they know that they face the horrors of radioactive poisoning and the various cancers triggered by radioactivity. They know their deaths are certain, and yet they remain. They see themselves as the last line of defense in protecting a whole nation against the increasing dangers posed by the damaged reactors. While some step forward in time of crisis in self-less, courageous ways, it seems only natural that others shirk away from danger. When I was a Navy Chaplain at Camp Pendleton, among the units I served was a small unit that consisted of those who had fled from Vietnam during the Vietnam War in the face of danger. When these Marines had been ordered to the battle front, they ran away rather than fight. Charged with info@communitylinks.info

Unauthorized Absence (going AWOL, absent without leave), these Marines were either captured by the government or turned themselves in after the conclusion of the Vietnam hostilities and faced court martial and prison time. While some step forward in extraordinary ways when faced with danger, others turn and run. Most of the time, the few who run don’t affect the outcome of a battle or war. Some of the time, a single brave and courageous individual going beyond the call of duty will save an entire battalion, even an entire town or city. The 300 brave souls who remain at the damaged nuclear plant may be saving an entire nation. What causes one man or woman to run and another man or woman to step forward in extraordinary ways? What triggers heroism in some brave souls. We don’t know the psychological processes that lead to seemingly irrational fearless behavior by some. Is there more than a little craziness in a person who puts aside his or her own safety to save others? The special courage that saves lives has been the subject of fictional stories or movies. Who can forget the Bruce Willis character in the movie Armageddon who is willing to land on an asteroid bound for a collision with earth to trigger a bomb which will send the asteroid away from direction of the

9

earth, saving the people of the earth. We even have an entire literature of super heroes who are uniquely special in their ability to save trains from colliding and individuals from other means of certain death. But in each major disaster or war, we have regular human beings who may lack the powers of a Spiderman or Superman or Wonder Woman but yet are able to reach supernatural courage and heroism. The State of Israel has been blessed with extraordinary men and women who have been able to go behind enemy lines to plot against Israel’s enemies leading to victorious battles. America has been similarly blessed with individuals who took the fire of enemies so that their fellow soldiers could escape and the battles could be won. The bravery of police and fire fighters is known far beyond the events of 9/11. Even regular citizens often serve to save so many others, only to lose their own lives in the end. I remember the crash into the Potomac River of a jet that had just taken off from what was then called National Airport. An unknown man going past on a nearby bridge just dove into the river after witnessing the jet break apart in the river’s waters. This unknown hero brought person after person to the safety of ropes from a rescue helicopter. When he had finished saving virtually all of the passengers who • 323-965-1544 •

had been tossed into the river by the crash, this exhausted unnamed hero lost his strength and sunk beneath the river current losing his own life. Dozens of individuals from the jet who had seemed sure to perish were saved by this one man who did not have to stop and certainly did not have to dive into the frigid waters of the Potomac that day. But thank G-d that such an individual came forward! We don’t yet know the outcome of the nuclear tragedy in Japan. But we do know of the 300 brave workers who did not leave, but rather have given themselves up to almost certain

death to save a country. With the work of these 300 workers, less radioactivity has escaped into the atmosphere. The evacuation radius of those forced to leave home has remained at about 18 miles from the plant, instead of stretching to many more miles and hundreds of thousands of additional other potential victims. In the face of the tragic loss of life, we say “Baruch Dayan HaEmet,” Blessed is the True Judge. We also say thanks to G-d for blessing us with the extraordinary people He created who give up their own safety so

that others can be safe. Through the uniquely special people who step forward at such times of needs, we realize the true beauty of G-d’s created world where we are blessed with the power to choose to be courageous and so strong. Thank G-d for those who step forward in time of need. If it is true that one who saves a single life is like one who saves the entire world, then those who save an entire nation are like those who save an entire universe. Thank G-d for such heroes.

arshas Metzora deals with the purification process of the person afflicted with tzora'as. After the disease healed, the formerly afflicted person is instructed to bring a sacrifice that includes two very diametrical items. "And he shall take two birds, cedar wood, crimson thread and hyssop (Leviticus 14:4)." The Torah details the offering and all of its intricacies, leaving the commentaries to ponder the symbolism of the wood of the tallest of trees bound together with the lowly moss of the hyssop. Rashi explains that, "the hyssop symbolizes the humility that the metzora should have," and the cedar," he explains, "is a symbolic reminder that he who holds himself as high as the cedar tree should learn to lower himself like the hyssop."

However, wouldn't hyssop alone teach us this characteristic or at least symbolize humility? What point is there in bringing cedar? And, in fact, if bringing moss represents the need for humility couldn't the offering of cedar represent the need for pride? Perhaps there is another explanation for the two attributes to be joined. A few years after Rabbi Shneur Kotler succeeded his late father Reb Ahron as the Rosh Yeshiva of the Lakewood Yeshiva, the Yeshiva's enrollment began to expand. No longer was Reb Shneur able to sit and study in the large Yeshiva all day. He was suddenly forced to raise funds day in and day out often leaving early in the morning and returning home way past midnight.

A brief respite was the annual convention of Agudath Israel at which nearly 1000 laymen and rabbinical leaders would gather for a long weekend to discuss the state of Torah affairs. My grandfather, Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, the oldest member of the Council of Torah Sages would often highlight the keynote session on Saturday night. As the eldest of the world's Torah sages, Reb Yaakov would find a way to sneak up to the dais, usually through a back door, to avoid having the entire crowd arise upon seeing his presence as is required by Jewish Law. Yet this year things were different. Reb Yaakov engaged the much younger, Reb Shneur in conversation outside the large ballroom and waited until everyone took his or her seats. Then he took Reb Shneur by the hand and said, "I think it is time we took our seats." He proudly held Reb Shneur by the arm and escorted him to the dais as the throng of people rose in awe. Reb Shneur, stunned by Reb Yaakov's departure from his trademark humility asked him why he did not go through the back as was his usual custom. "Reb Shneur," he explained, "your Rebbitzen (rabbi's wife) is sitting in the auditorium . The entire year she sees you in a much-dishonored light. You run from donor to donor in order to keep the Yeshiva open, you have hardly any time to prepare your lectures, and all she sees are people knocking on your door with their problems. Yet she stands beside you faithful and unwavering. It is time that she sees that you get a little kavod (honor).

Rabbi Yitzchak Meir of Gur (1799-1866) explains that sometimes people become so humbled to the point of forgetting that they can actually achieve wonderful accomplishments. Often, humility breeds self-effacement that may lead to despair. Of course Rashi is correct in explaining that those who are haughty as the cedar must humble themselves as mass, but one must also bear in mind an equally important fact - that at times after one has been humiliated as low as the hyssop he must rise in his own eyes to the height of a cedar and proudly exclaim that he can and will accomplish the lofty and far reaching goal to which he or she aspires. And those are goals that only the cedar's limbs can touch. So, perhaps the lowly hyssop must be bound with a seemingly mismatched and more supercilious counterpart, the cedar. Because when they are offered hand-in-hand, they may have a lot to learn from each other. • 3201 Camino Del Sol, Oxnard CA 93030 (805) 983-1560 www.herzogwinecellars.com

The Feast By Tuvia Bolton

Editor's note: This is an old Jewish story/joke/metaphor. Versions abound. My favorite is Tuvia Bolton's rendition:

here were once two beggars who used to go around begging together. One was Jewish and the other a gentile. As the night of Passover approached, the Jewish beggar offered to help his non-Jewish friend get invited to a seder (the festive Passover meal accompanied by many commandments and rituals) and get a good meal. "Just put on some Jewish clothes and come with me to the synagogue. Everyone brings home poor guests for the seder. It's easy, you'll see." The non-Jewish beggar happily agreed. On the first night of Passover they went to the synagogue, and sure enough, both got invited to different homes for the festive ceremony. Hours later they met in a predetermined place in the local park. But to the amazement of the Jewish beggar, his friend was blazing mad. "What did you do to me?" He shouted. "You call that a meal? It was torture!! It was hell! I'll pay you back for this-you'll see..." "What do you mean? What happened?" the Jew asked. "What happened? As if you didn't know! You Jews are crazy--that's what happened! First we drank a glass of wine.

I like wine, but on an empty stomach... My head started spinning a bit but I figured that any second we would begin the meal. The smell of the food from the kitchen was great. Then we ate a bit of parsley. Then they started talking, and talking, and talking. In Hebrew. All the time I'm smiling and nodding my head as if I understand what they're saying--like you told me to--but my head is really swimming and hurting from the wine and I'm dying of hunger. "The smell of the food from the kitchen is making me insane, but they don't bring it out. For two hours they don't bring anything out! Just talking, and more talking. Then, just what I needed.... another cup of wine! Then we get up, wash hands, sit back down and eat this big wafer called matzah that tastes like newspaper, leaning to the left (don't ask me why...). I started choking, almost threw up. And then finally they give me this lettuce, I took a big bite and wham! My mouth was on fire. My throat! There was horseradish inside! Nothing to eat but horseradish! You guys are crazy... "Well, I just got up and left. Enough is enough!" "Ah, I should have told you." replied the Jew. "What a shame! After the bitter herbs is a glorious meal. You suffered so long; you should have just held out for a few more minutes...!"•

A seder without wine? How can it be? You ask. Everybody knows we have to drink four cups of wine at the seder, in remembrance of the four stages of liberation from Egyptian bondage. Indeed so important are these four cups of wine that we make a blessing on each of them, while on the first cup of wine we make the kiddush. A seder without wine is almost unthinkable! Yet, it happened once upon a time when a whole Jewish community had to make the seder without wine. This is what our story is about. It happened many years ago, in a land ruled by a king, who was not unfriendly to the Jews. Indeed, one of his best friends was the Rabbi of the community, whom the king admired for his wisdom and learning, kindness and humility? A combination of virtues he did not find among his courtiers. The king just loved to spend time with the Rabbi, discussing matters of importance. And when the king had any problem, he asked the Rabbi's advice, and he never had any cause for regret. Everything would have been well, except that the king had a prime minister who was no friend of the Jews, and who was especially jealous of the friendship the king showed to the Rabbi. One day the prime minister asked the king why he was showing such friendship to the Rabbi."Why not?" replied the king. "I admire his wisdom and learning; there is nothing but kindness and fear of G-d in his heart, and he is most loyal to me and wishes me well. He certainly deserves my friendship!" "What if I proved to your Majesty that the Rabbi is not all that he pretends to be, and that behind your Majesty's back he will not hesitate to break your laws, and speak unkindly of your Majesty?" "I doubt very much if you can prove any such thing," replied the king confidently. "But if you do, I will know how to deal with him. On the other hand, if you fail to prove your reckless accusation, I will know how to deal with you. And so, my dear prime minister, how do you propose to prove your accusation?" "The day after tomorrow the Jews will begin celebrating their Passover festival. On the first two nights of the festival they have a special feast, a "seder" they call it, when they drink four cups of wine. So important is wine for their seder that a Jew will gladly sell his last shirt to be able to have wine for the seder.

A SEDER WITHOUT WINE By Nissan Mindel

Now, I suggest, your Majesty, that you command the Rabbi to tell the Jews that no one, not even the Rabbi himself, shall drink any wine at the seder. Then you will see if the Rabbi and the other Jews carry out your order, and what they say about your Majesty" "And how are we going to find this out?" asked the king. "I know that before the Rabbi sits down to his own seder table, he vis-

its the Jewish guest house, where a public seder is arranged for the poor and homeless wandering Jews that happen to be in town. If we disguise ourselves, it will be easy for us to join the crowd and witness the seder" "So be it," the king agreed. "But I warn you: you are playing with your head!""It's my head against the Rabbi's head," the prime minister challenged. The following day the king sent for the Rabbi, and when he appeared, the king said to him: "I command you to tell the Jews that no one, not even you, my friend, shall drink any wine at the seder on penalty of death!"The Rabbi was surprised and saddened, but he answered, dutifully: "Your Majesty's command shall be obeyed." True to his word, the Rabbi sent out word to all the Jews in the city: "By order of the king, Jews are forbidden to drink wine at the seder; but except for that, the seder should be celebrated in the usual way and with the usual joy and inspiration; and each time, when the Haggadah calls for the drinking of a cup of wine, an empty cup should be lifted, and the following prayer recited: `Master of the World! It is revealed and known to you that we sincerely desire to do Your Will, but his Majesty the king forbade us to drink wine tonight on penalty of death. Since, according to Your holy Torah, the saving of life puts aside the mitzvah of the four cups, we pray for Your forgiveness for not drinking wine tonight."' In the guest house the table was set for the seder. For each place setting there was a Seder Plate, with matzah, bitter herbs and the other required items; there were spotless wine glasses and cups, and bottles filled with red wine.

33

April 8, 2011

Soon the room was filled with celebrants, who seated themselves around the table. Among them were two strangers, dressed as poorly as the rest, but since all were strangers, no one paid any particular attention to them. Certainly it did not occur to anyone that those two were none other than the king and his prime minister. Presently the Rabbi came, and all rose respectfully in his honor. He seated himself at the head of the table and greeted everyone with a hearty "good Yom Tov." The first item of the seder was, of course, Kaddesh: to make kiddush on the first of the four cups of wine. The Rabbi reminded all the guests of the king's decree. He bade them to rise and lift up empty wine glasses and recite after him the prayer he had composed for this occasion: "Master of the World," etc. Everyone faithfully followed the Rabbi's instructions, and the wine bottles were left untouched. Otherwise, the seder proceeded as joyously and inspiringly as ever. The king and his prime minister sat through the entire seder and heard the same prayer repeated four times. Everyone, including the king, enjoyed the seder meal; only one person sat there like a bereaved man among bridegrooms, the unhappy prime minister. When the seder was over, the king and his prime minister left the guest house together. Before parting at the gate of the palace, the king told his prime minister to be sure to appear before him the following day in midafternoon. The following morning the king sent a messenger to the Rabbi to summon him to appear before the king at mid afternoon. At the appointed time the Rabbi and the prime minister met at • 323-965-1544 •

the gate of the palace, and both were ushered in before the king. Turning to the Rabbi, the king said: "Unknown to you, worthy Rabbi, I and my prime minister were your guests at the seder last night. We were disguised, of course, and we came to see with our own eyes if you would obey my order. The foolish prime minister had staked his head, assuring me that you would not. I am happy that you did faithfully carry out my order, though I sincerely regret having caused you and all the Jews unnecessary heartache by interfering with your sacred seder celebration. But the prime minister shall pay for his folly. I place him in your hands: choose any kind of death for him, and it shall be done!" "Your Majesty," the Rabbi replied, "ever since we lost our Sanctuary in Jerusalem no Rabbinic court is authorized to pronounce a death sentence on anyone.""In that case," said the king, I shall pronounce his death sentence: he shall be hanged publicly forthwith!" Then the king told the Rabbi that the decree prohibiting wine drinking was lifted, and the Rabbi could now make it known to all Jews that they could again drink all the wine they wanted. The happy news quickly spread among the Jews and was received with great jubilation. The second seder was celebrated with extraordinary joy and deep gratitude to the Almighty in celebration, not only of the miracles and wonders of the liberation from Egypt, but also of the miracle that happened to them in getting rid of a cruel enemy. It was the happiest Passover that they had ever celebrated. •

Pesach -

From Redemption To Redemption

By Rabbi Wolf

R’ Eleazar ben Azaryah said "I am like a man of seventy years old, yet I did not succeed in proving that the exodus from Egypt must be mentioned every nightuntil Ben Zoma explained it: "It is said, `That you may remember the day you left Egypt all the days of your life;' The words `the days of your life' refer to the daytimes, [and the additional word] ‘all’ indicates the inclusion of the nights!" The sages said: "`The days of your life' refers to the present-day world; and ‘all’ refers to [the bringing of] the days of Moshiach." This famous passage of the Haggadah is actually a quote from the last mishna in the first chapter of Brachos, which discusses the daily mitzvos of reading the Shema and remembering the exodus from Egypt. Many commentaries explain that this mishna isn’t recording a halachic dispute and that all parties agree that the exodus is to be mentioned during the day and night, both in the present world as well as in the future world. What their discussion revolves around is the word Kol/All; is this word present in the verse to clarify this law about the night, or is it there to include even the days of the future redemption? Why is this in the Haggadah in the first place? On Passover, we have a mitzvah to tell the story of the exodus from Egypt. This mishna discusses our daily obligation to mention the redemption, but is otherwise unrelated to Passover. The Shema is a crucial and deepest moment of our prayer, where we connect directly to Hashem’s oneness and mastery over the universe. If we are mentioning the redemption during this moment, it is because it is at the core of

our Judaism; it has power and relevancy to our daily existence. R’ Eleazar ben Azaryah is teaching that this redemptive force, which we mention twice every day, is an active power in our daily lives during the day, and at night, even in our times, and according to the sages, even in the future when we will experience an even greater redemption. In a spiritual sense, the redemption from Egypt is continuously taking place every moment of our lives, and will continue to do so. So, when we read this Mishna in the Haggadah, in the context of Passover and the Seder, we realize the relevance, power, magnitude and endurance of the redemption from Egypt and the miracles that occurred at that time. When did R’ Eleazar ben Azaryah say this? The Talmud relates that R’ Elazar ben Azarya was appointed and the leader and prince of the Jewish people when he was only eighteen years old. To show his worthiness for the position a great miracle occurred, and overnight he grew a long grey beard. It was on this day that he said : "I am like a man of seventy years old…” Why did R’ Elazar ben Azarya merit to say this teaching, and why did he do it on this particular day? Surely R’ Elazar ben Azarya knew all of our laws and customs, and of course he knew that every Jew is obligated to study as much Torah as possible, but that which is relevant to him takes precedence. For example, if one can choose to study the laws of the red heifer or the laws of kashrus or Shabbos observance, being that there is an immediate need to know how to propinfo@communitylinks.info

erly observe Shabbos and keep kosher, these laws should be learned first; we have to know what we are to be doing. So, if R’ Elazar ben Azarya was appointed to the leadership on that day, he must have studied the parts of the Torah that were applicable to him assuming this tremendous responsibility. How did this teaching relate to his new position? Mystically, exile in Egypt is akin to being in a state of constriction and limitation. We all have boundaries and limits to our abilities, understanding and desires; we are born this way. Each soul is simply a piece of G-d taken from the limitless and immeasurable divinity in Heaven and thrown into a physical body down here on Earth. Besides for all of the aches and pains that we might suffer during a lifetime, even more traumatic to a soul is the shock and isolation that comes as a result of being separated from unconcealed and limitless G-dliness and spirituality. Perhaps even worse than the separation and yearning to reconnect with G-d, the soul is forced to spend the majority of her time in mundane activity. Just to maintain even the most basic physical life requires that a person sleep, eat and toil for livelihood. All of this necessary time is spent at the expense of the soul’s only desire, which is for Torah, mitzvos, and to return to the divinity beyond.

41

April 8, 2011

To make matters worse, every G-dly soul is partnered with an evil inclination, often called the animal soul. A person’s evil inclination naturally works against G-dliness. The animal within us lusts and craves for physical pleasures and delights, and can drive one very far from the path of G-dliness. It pulls us away as far as possible from divinity and attaches us to things which are antithetical to spirituality; that is all that it understands. Even when we try to pull away from these things, the evil inclination can attack us with its powerful tools such as sadness, despair, laziness or hopelessness. All of these factors work against us, despite our soul’s only true desire to reconnect with G-d. We are taken away from light into darkness, and we have to struggle with this constantly, on a daily basis. This is our own personal exile, and each of us has our own particular variations. Yetzias Mitzraim/The Exodus from Egypt happens to us every day. Despite the fact that we are all in some way trapped, G-d empowers each and every soul to transcend her problems and physical limitations. A Jew is never cemented to Earth. We have the ability to yank ourselves out from the muck and clean up whatever mess we find ourselves in. No matter what is trying to hold us back, we can break away. More-

• 323-965-1544 •

over, we always have the ability to grow and strengthen our relationship with G-d through Torah and Mitzvos. Despite all the demands of a physical body and all the disorder of the evil inclination, we can still connect with G-d. This is the redemptive power we were granted when Hashem took us out from Egypt. It remains with us constantly, and can never be taken away from us. This Mishna teaches us that this redemptive power, this “exodus from Egypt,” is to be particularly remembered during three periods in our lives: daytime, night time, and during the Messianic era. Daytime is a period that is fully illuminated. During our lives, this is when we are fortunate to experience deep inspiration and connection with G-d. He parts the veil of creation, and the warmth of His glow spills over us and we feel joyful, inspired and fortunate to be alive. In these periods of great enlightenment, we grow quickly and easily. Learning Torah and doing Mitzvos are not chores, but an honor and a great opportunity. Even during these moments, R’ Elazar ben Azarya teaches, we must remember the exodus from Egypt. We shouldn’t be satisfied with it. Despite any great illumination and success we feel, G-d is limitless and always far beyond that. We must always pursue a path of growth. Somewhere, there is another

info@communitylinks.info

aspect of constriction and limitation to move past; tomorrow must always be better than today. Nighttime is when we have the opposite experience. It’s a time of great concealment, and we feel the darkness all around us. We become uninspired and feel distant from G-d. We wallow in laziness, depression, pain and misery, and see failure again and again. It feels like G-d is simply not there for us. Even during these moments we must know, R’ Elazar ben Azarya says, that when G-d took us out from Egypt he put such a redemptive power into the world and into our souls, there is always the spark of redemption ready to be set ablaze. There is a kernel of freedom in the core of our souls that is never taken away, even in the deepest and darkest moments of our lives, when we feel like we cannot break free. Through the first redemption, the exodus from Egypt, G-d gave us the power to constantly grow, and break free from any constriction or limitation; to throw off darkness and express the true soul. The sages add a lesson even more novel and powerful: this power of redemption is so lasting and strong, that even when Moshiach comes, a time of ultimate spiritual growth and permanent redemption, we will still acknowledge the exodus

from Egypt, and it will still be relevant to our lives. The Torah writes that the Jews “ran” away from Egypt. Why did they run? Pharaoh only wanted to let them leave for three days; he didn’t want to completely set them free. So, as soon as they left, they ran as fast as they could, and never came back. Why did G-d arrange the exodus in this way? Hashem is all knowing and all powerful! He could have arranged the Exodus as an unquestionably final break just as easily. Running away from Egypt seems to be the least powerful way of finalizing the Jewish people’s freedom. It happened this way because their physical redemption mirrored their spiritual redemption. The Jews, after 210 years of spiritual depravation, were trapped in the darkness and servitude of Egypt. G-d appeared and cracked through the darkness so they could break free, and their souls immediately flared up and connected with Him. Temporarily, they were numbed to the darkness that surrounded them, but it wasn’t destroyed, and the possibility of that darkness stirring once again and sneeking its way back into their lives was very real. For this reason, the Jewish people ran away as quickly as possible. To say that Pharaoh liberated them com-

pletely would not have been true. Egypt still had a hold on their souls (it was simply dormant for the time being) and they fled. This spiritual reality translated itself into the physical redemption, and therefore Pharaoh only gave them a short break, but didn’t actually emancipate them. The imminent redemption will not occur this way. Rather, through our Torah and Mitzvos, the true goodness of every Jew will be ignited and inspired. Slowly we chip away at the darkness and unholiness that encompass the world and transform its essence, including every part of the human being - even the animal soul. The yetzer hara itself will be drafted into the service of Hashem, and will fully crave and lust for spirituality the way it now chases mundane pleasures. Every part of our lives will be transformed; all of the darkness will be turned to light. It’s a slow process, and we don’t see it as it occurs, but it has been happening for thousands of years. The moment Moshiach comes, and the divine light is turned on in the dark world, we will see the truth so clearly and openly, that we will run towards it with every fiber of our being, and there will not be a possibility for anything else. There will never be another exile. If this is the case, why do the sages teach

that even then, when final redemption completely destroys all darkness, will we need to remember the exodus from Egypt? The Egyptian redemption will seem immature and incomplete in comparison! The unbelievable innovation of the sages informs us that leaving Egypt and the coming of Moshach are really one in the same. From G-d’s perspective, the full dosage of redemptive energy, including the final redemption, already manifest within the world way back in Egypt. From our perspective it’s manifest in stages. At first, leaving Egypt, we’re empowered to free ourselves from the darkness, and to resist it. This doesn’t destroy the darkness completely, but gives us the opportunity to transform it to light through Torah and Mitzvos. Very soon, when Moshiach comes, the next stage will manifest, and we will see the truth that is already there now – that G-dliness and spirituality exclusively fills reality, and it is the supreme good. This is why the sages use the terminology “‘all’ refers to the bringing of the days of Moshiach.” It is only through the redemption of Egypt, an ongoing process which still empowers us throughout our lives, which is happening right now, that we are able to resist the darkness and continue preparing the world for the imminent final redemption. R’ Eleazar ben Azaryah was studying on that day, preparing to be the leader of the Jewish people, through thick and through thin. It’s easy to see that G-d is there for us during the daytime, to help guide us and inspire us when we are already ready and

open to Him. What about the nighttime? How would R’ Eleazar ben Azaryah lead and inspire the Jewish people when they are struggling to do the right thing, if G-d forbid they feel uninspired and unmotivated? What is he trying to accomplish with his leadership? With his wisdom, he puts the spotlight on the nighttime. He says that even when we are struggling in the dark, during a long and bitter exile, when we feel uninspired and disconnected, we are still connected to redemption. Not only do we have the power to leave Egypt and break free of our problems and limitations, we have an even greater power with us - the power of ultimate redemption – which can completely and permanently transform all darkness into light. He connected every moment of our lives, no matter where we are or what we are doing, to the ultimate redemption. This is how R’ Eleazar ben Azaryah was preparing for his great task of connecting with and leading every Jew, elevating the lives of his people. Every Jewish soul is a piece of G-d from above, and we are always connected with our source. When our souls are plucked from heaven and thrust into a body down here on Earth, it is only to show our soul’s strength and durability through thick and thin, and a soul will always find G-d no matter how far she strays. This is the Pesach of our lives and our times, and through this recognition, that every Jew is a force of redemption, and that every moment of our lives is a moment of redemption, not a moment of exile, may we merit seeing the final redemption very quickly. • 323-965-1544 •

VAAD HARABONIM The Rabbanim and gabbaim of Vaad Harabbanim experienced a thrilling moment during the days of Purim, in the home of posek hador Maran Harav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, shlita, when Maran lifted up the money for matanos Posek Hador Maran Harav Yosef Shalom le’evyonim that were donated to Vaad Elyashiv, shlita, performs the shelichus on Purim for the matanos le'evyonim contri- Harabbanim, assuming the role of shalibutions made to Vaad Harabbanim ach for all the contributors, and then handed the funds to the couriers who rushed to pass the money to the recipients bo bayom.

Maran Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, examines the stubs of the checks distributed on Purim by the Vaad Harabbanim

This unprecedented step taken by the posek hador, shlita, expressed his unqualified faith in the Vaad Harabbanim charity fund, as he knows with total certainty that every penny that had been donated to Vaad Harabbanim for matanos le’evyonim had been given to the truly needy all over Eretz Yisrael. And indeed, people were rubbing their eyes in disbelief. Although everyone is familiar with the absolute confidence that Maran, shlita has in the Vaad Harabbanim, this was still a rare occurrence: Harav Elyashiv himself as the shaliach!

Maran Rosh Hayeshiva Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, shlita

Jerusalem said, “If Harav Elyashiv would tell you that he wanted to pick the most mehudar esrog for you, wouldn’t you take it? So, too, Maran, shlita, made a point of telling us that this is the most exemplary matanos le’evyonim there is, and he himself was going to be our shaliach to fulfill this mitzva! This means that we could be 100% sure that we have fulfilled the mitzva in the best possible fashion!” But Am Yisrael was not alone in its excitement over this historic moment. Those who were present when Maran, shlita, performed the shlichus – which happened six different times, morning, noon, and late afternoon, over the two days of Purim — testified that Harav Elyashiv himself was excited about performing this role, and was deeply impressed by the huge sums that Am Yisrael had donated to the needy of the Holy Land. Maran was far from the only one who was moved; other Gedolei Yisrael also expressed profound emotion when they were shown the piles of check stubs from the checks that were distributed on Purim, and could see the impressive sums that had been collected to save thousands of families in Eretz Yisrael.

CHEDER MENACHEM SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT IS ACKNOWLEDGED BY PROMINENT LOCAL RABBONIM - Seder Moed, Levi Mishulovin 11 Mesechtas of Seder Moed, Yossi Raeburn 9 – ten Mesechtas including Brachos, Avos and Tractates from Seder Moed, and Yossi Wolowik 13 – memorized Sedorim Moed, Nezikin and Kodashim.

Cheder Menachem, a Chabad Elementary School, serving over 275 boys from ages Pre 1A through 8th Grade in the Pico Robertson area, has championed excellence in Torah Scholarship with an exceptional extra-curricular program. The Mishnayos B’Ahl Peh Project, directed by Rabbi Sholom Heidingsfeld, has students engrossed and immersed in Torah study from Yud Shevat until Yud Aleph Nissan, every year.

For one hour, the Rabbonim challenged the students to recite numerous Mishnayos of the Sedorim, and asked questions related to the understanding of the Mishnayos, for example: "How many times is R' Yosei Bar Yehuda mentioned in Seder Moed and what is unique about this?" [Answer: “Twice once he is meikil, and once he is machmir.”]

On Tanis Esther 5771, the Cheder was honored by the visit of seven prominent Rabbonim from the Los Angeles area: R' Ezra Douek - Rav of Kehillas Ohd Yosef Chai, R Yochanon Henig- Rosh Kolel Yechiel Yehuda, R' Shloime Klein - Rav of Ohr HaChayim Shul, R' Daniel Korobkin - Rav of Kehillas Yavneh, R' Shimon Raichik - Rav Kehillas Levi Yitzchok Chabad, R' Chaim Boruch Rubin - Rav of Eitz Chaim Shul and R' Yosef Shusterman - Rav of the Chabad community and Chabad North Beverly Hills.

The Rabbonim toured the Cheder, and were presented with a Teshurah/Memento - a Kuntres of Megilas Esther with the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s commentary. Program History: This year marks the 11th annual Mishnayos Baal Peh Program - “ a Tribute in honor of the Rebbe’s Birthday” - from the Cheder students. The above-mentioned students are joined by their fellow schoolmates in this school-wide effort. To date, 9 weeks into a 12 week program, -- over 1200 prakim of Mishnayos including 135 complete Mesechtas, and 4700 lines of Tanya including 90 complete prakim -- have been committed to memory by Cheder students. The Cheder Rebbies and Tzivos Hashem coordinators play a major role in the enthusiasm, accomplishment and excitement generated by this outstanding Torah project. •

Rabbi Mendel Greenbaum the Menahel of Cheder, Rabbi Mendel Goldman a Board Member, Rabbi Heidingsfeld and many Cheder Rebbies greeted the visiting Rabbis and joined the proceedings. The participating six students are required to demonstrate their acuity by committing to memory at least 10 Mesechtas/Tractates.Menachem Farkash 12 – achieved an admirable academic feat by memorizing the entire six Sedorim of Mishnayos; Levi Greenbaum 11 - Seder Moed and Seder Kodashim, Mendel Korf 13

“And you should love your neighbor as yourself…” (Vayikra 19:18) How can the Torah obligate an emotion of love?

The Shepherd’s Shepherds

Rabbi Moshe Cordovero writes in Tomer Devorah, “This is why all Jews are “guarantors one for another” since each individual actually has a portion of everyone else, so that if one damages himself he damages that portion of himself that is in his friend. It follows that his friend is a guarantor for that portion. Therefore it is fitting for a person to desire the best for his fellow, and view his good fortune benevolently and cherish his friend’s honor as his own- for they are actually one in the same! For this reason we are commanded to “love your neighbor as yourself ” and it is proper that a person should desire the wellbeing of his fellow and not speak ill of or wish ill for him.” Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch ztl. approaches the same point for an etymological approach. The word for “your neighbor”-“rayechah” finds its root in the same word for shepherd as it says in the famous 23rd Psalm “HASHEM royi”“HASHEM is my shepherd…” Curious that the Torah chose that category of personage to whom we are obligated to demonstrate our love, Rav Hirsch writes, “Everyone is to find and recognize in everybody else his “mireh”- “the pasturage of his life”, the furthering of his own well-being, the conditions for his own well-being in life. Nobody may look at the progress of another as a hindrance to his own progress or look at the downfall of another as the means for his own rising and nobody may rejoice in his own progress if it is at the expense of his neighbor’s failure…In exactly the same way and from the same consciousness of duty he directs his love to the well-being of his neighbor, loves him as a being equally a creation of G-d, he proclaims his love of G-d by his love of His creatures.”

The Tanna D’Bei Yishmael explains why the Jewish People are compared to a sheep. Just as if any single limb of the lamb is smitten all the limbs feel it so it is with all of Israel. He offers the following parable about a group of people traveling on a ship. One passenger takes out a drill and begins to bore a hole beneath his seat. His friends say to him, “Why are you doing this?” He says back to them, “What does it matter to you? I’m only drilling under my seat!” They answer him back, “You are going to cause the whole ship to sink on us!” I heard once a story about a fellow that climbed to the peak of some great mountain. There he was, with his timberland boots and backpack, alone and aloof from the world. Like an eagle, the paradigm of arrogance according to the Zohar, he reveled in his achievement. He thought to himself, “Who needs other people!? I’m king of the hill!” Just then, his glasses fell from his face and while feeling

around for them he stepped on them and crushed them. He was helpless and visionless without his glasses. Within a short while he was curled up in a fetal position awaiting assistance. We don’t make our own clothing or create our own food from scratch daily. An intricate army called economy provides for most of our daily needs. A cup of coffee is an enormously sophisticated accomplishment when we consider from how far coffee beans come and how water is delivered and heat is produced and milk and sugar are processed and shipped. No wonder we make a Brocho, “Shehakol Nehiah B’dvaro” –“Everything comes about through His speech”. That’s just a coffee. What about all the other grandiose and subtle brands of goodness that we are the beneficiaries of ?! To the extent that we can keep an awareness of these myriads of matters big and small, so will we naturally love the Shepherd’s shepherds. •
