Why would the Torah use the words "and to all its inhabitants," when only some of its inhabitants are going free? The masters and employers were never slaves.

or more than 20 years, the largest Jewish community activity of the year in Los Angeles has been the Israel Day Festival. Put together by a volunteer committee with only one paid staff member, a group of mostly Israelis has staged the perfect family outing in support of Israel each year. In recent years, up to 40,000 Jews and non-Jews have come together to celebrate Israel in Woodley Park. Here is an event which not only honors Israel, but does it in true Israeli fashion with an outdoor picnic-like celebration complete with entertainment, food, and a host of very interesting booths and exhibits. Those who have celebrated Israel Independence Day in Israel comment each year how much this event is like bringing Israel to Los Angeles. Though put on in a cost-effective and efficient way, the activity takes on a very Hollywood feel. Among the participants most years have been the Governor, the Mayor, members of the Board of Supervisors, and a host of state officials. Top radio, TV, and movie personalities come to show support for the Jewish state. For the past 15 years or so, the Israel Day Festival has been an officially designated cultural activity of the City of Los Angeles. But this year, the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles has decided • 323-965-1544 •

that this largest Jewish communal event would not get the support of the official governing body of Jewish Los Angeles as the Federation has withdrawn the annual grant for this event. What makes it worse is that the Federation only contributed in past years $20,000 of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Festival budget. But with the Federation withdrawing support for the Festival and the City of Los Angeles now charging about $50,000 for the police security for the day, a service that used to be provided for free (you know the shrinking city budget), the bare bones budget of the Festival could not handle the losses. So, this year there will not be an Israel Day Festival. The event has been cancelled, hopefully for this year only. Los Angeles has now become the only major city in the country without a major event highlighting Israel Independence Day. What did the Jewish community get for $20,000 in previous years? Think of all the things: 1. A huge event drawing from all elements of the community. 2. The only event which truly unites the Israeli and non-Israeli communities. 3. An event where Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, secular, and religious all gathered in peaceful info@communitylinks.info

s xc

harmony. 4. Front page articles in the local newspapers and a full spread in the Los Angeles Times. 5. An event which showcases the support for Israel of all major politicians in the state. 6. An event at which most major synagogues, schools, community groups, and others sponsor booths showcasing the diversity of the community.

7. An opportunity to articulate the support for Israel in a frequently hostile environment.

NO COST MEDI-CAL No Copay, No Share of Cost Or

8. And more. All of this cost the Federation only $20,000! What a bargain! By contrast, the Federation just mailed to all donors an invitation for a Centennial Dinner. The postage alone approached the cost of the Federation grant for the much larger and worthwhile Israel Day Festival, let alone the cost of the invitation… What are the priorities of the Jewish community if the community cannot afford $20,000 for the celebration of Israel’s Independence. There is money in the community for other causes and events, both within the Federation and among other independent Jewish groups and agencies. As just one example, there have been several full-page ads in the L.A. Times as well as ads in other media for this year’s Yom Ha-Shoah program at the Los Angeles Holocaust Memorial. The cost of publicity alone for this event exceeds the former Federation subsidy for the Israel Day Festival. There appears to be plenty of cash in the Los Angeles Jewish Community to recall the past, but no money this year to celebrate the present and future of the Jewish people. A Holocaust Memorial service is needed. But so is a celebration of Israel Independence Day. I am not just a neutral observer in all this. It was my honor to have served for about a decade on the Israel Day Festival Committee. I am especially proud of my efforts to help gain City of Los Angeles support and recognition for the Festival. My admiration for the Festival Committee that is able to stage an event for tens of thousands with basically a volunteer-only staff and a minimal budget is so great.

ence. Whatever the reason, Los Angeles now stands alone without a community-wide event in honor of Israel Independence Day. It is too late for this year to find replacement funds to make up for the withdrawal of the Federation’s support. After decades of successful Festival events, this will be the first year without a Festival this Millennium. I only hope that enough of the readers of this article will speak out in support of Israel and gain Federation support for the Festival in the future. If needed, we are a strong enough community that can bypass the lack of Federation support and stage this community event despite their withdrawal of support if necessary. To the Israel Day Festival Committee members, I believe you can count on us to be there next year, not only with our attendance, but with our financial support as well. We love the work you do and the event you stage. Thank you all for decades of hard work and success. You have made a difference. Next year in Woodley Park! By Robert J. Rome, Ph.D. Robert J. Mitzvah Vigilante

The Torah tells us in this week's parsha, "u'shmartem es mitzvosai, v'aseesem osum -- watch the mitzvos and do them" (Vayikra 22:31). What does watch mitzvos mean. If one does a mitzvah he is surely doing more than watching them. Watching mitzvos seems quite passive. Observant Jew is a term used for those who actually perfom the and adhere to the laws, and the curious word observant, perhaps, indeed comes from the Hebrew word u'shmartem. But doesn't Hashem want us to be more than just watchers. If He tells us to do mitzvos, then surely we watch them! Why the double, if not redundant, expression? I went to be Menachem Avel (in the vernacular - pay a shiva call) a friend, Rabbi Zissel Zelman, who was sitting shiva for his father. He is a Chicago native whose father, Rabbi Zelman, grew up in Chicago way before Torah Judaism had flourished there. Reb Zissel related that as a young man, his father would pass the newsstand every Saturday night after shul to pick up a paper. As he did not carry money with him, he had made an arrangement with the vendors to return on Sunday morning to pay the vendor. Rabbi Zelman was not interested in the sports pages nor was he interested in the headlines. In fact he was not interested in the paper altogether. Rabbi Zelman bought the paper for his mother. She also was not interested in the sports or the news. She was interested in the dead. Every Saturday night she would comb the paper looking for announcements of tombstone unveilings that were to take place on Sunday at the Jewish Cemeteries. An unveiling is a time when people are charitable, and the elderly Mrs. Zelman would go to the cemeteries and raise funds from the gathered for Yeshivos in Europe in Israel. She would eventually turn the coins into bills and send the money overseas. A plaque hangs today in the Slobodka Yeshiva in Israel commemorating her efforts. Perhaps the Torah is telling us more than just doing mitzvos. It is telling us to watch for mitzvos. Be on guard. There are hundeds of opportunities to find mitzvos and to do them. But we must be observant and vigilant. There are hundreds of mitzvos that pass by our very eyes. Scores of Good Mornings. Hudreds of packages we can help lift, as well as spirits. There are hundreds of hearts we can help heal as well as small acts of charity we can fulfill. Perhaps the Torah is telling us more than watch the mitzvos that come our way. Perhaps it may be telling us to be on the lookout for those that are out there waiting for us to observe them!

I

t is probably the most famous Biblical verse in American History. Each year thousands of people come to see its bold raised lettering prominently encircling the rim of the revered icon of our country's independence. Many visitors hardly notice the verse. Instead, their gaze is transfixed upon another, much less divine symbol, that bears the painful message of that sacred verse. But the large crack they come to see has no inherent meaning. It is only the result of the constant resounding of the words that are sacredly enshrined on its oxidized metal. Those words are from this week's portion, "proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all its inhabitants thereof" (Leviticus 25:10). Truth be told, however, those words refer not to a revolution or liberation, they refer to the mitzvah of Yovel - Jubilee. Every 50 years, all Jewish servants, whether employed for only a six-year period or on an extended docket, and even those who desire to remain as servants to their masters, are freed. They return home to their families, and their careers of indenturage are over. But the verse is confusing. It says, "proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all its inhabitants thereof." Isn't the Torah referring to the freedom of slaves and the servants. Isn't that a proclamation of freedom for only a select few? Why would the Torah use the words "and to all its inhabitants," when only some of its inhabitants are going free? The masters and employers were never slaves. They are not going free. Or are they?

"Why didn't he enter the hom?" The winds began to blow, and despite the chill Reb Isser Zalman walked back and forth outside his home. About 15 minutes passed and once again, Rabbi Melzer walked slowly up the stairs, waited, and then headed back down. His nephew could not contain himself, "Please, Rebbe," he pleaded. "What's the matter?" Reb Isser Zalman just shrugged and said, "just wait a few more moments. Please." "But, uncle, it's getting cold. Please answer me. What are you waiting for?" Rabbi Melzer realized that he could no longer keep his motivations to himself. "I'll explain. As I walked up the steps I heard the young woman who comes once a week to help with the housework in the kitchen. She was mopping the floor and singing while she mopped. I knew that if I were to walk in she would have become embarrassed and stopped her singing. The singing helps her through her work, and I did not want to make her work any bit harder, let alone deny her the joy of her singing. Despite the cold, I decided to wait outside until she finishes her work and her song. Then I'll go in." The Torah uses a very significant expression this week that synopsizes the true meaning of ownership and servitude. "Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all its inhabitants thereof." When one employs he is also indebted to his employee. In addition to the paycheck he is responsible for the workers feelings, working conditions and welfare. He is responsible to provide a safe environment, suitable provisions, and above all mentchlechkeit. And when Yovel arrives and the workers and servants return home, they are not the only ones going free. A great burden is lifted from the shoulders of the master. Freedom is declared for all the inhabitants of the land. The servants are not the only ones who are "home free." As we used to say in the heat of the game of ring-o-lee-vio, we are, "home free all."

HOME FREE, FOR ALL

It was a cold and blustery day and Rabbi Isser Zalman Melzer, the dean of the Eitz Chaim Yeshiva in Jerusalem, was returning home from a long day in the Yeshiva. Accompanied by his nephew, Reb Dovid Finkel, who normally walked him home, Rabbi Melzer began to ascend the steps to his Jerusalem apartment. Suddenly, Reb Isser Zalman stopped and retreated down the old staircase as if he had forgotten something. As he reached the street, he began to wander aimlessly back and forth, in thought. His nephew began to question the strange actions of the Torah sage. "Did Reb Isser Zalman forget something?"

umbers are funny things. On the one hand, they seem utterly devoid of meaning: think of the sterility of bureaucracies ("Go to Window #14 and fill out form #3062") or the banality of an address like "25 20th Street." On the other hand, consider how numbers are used when we say things like, "Eighteen years' experience in the business"; "A $450,000 home"; or "This is our child. She's three." Counting something makes it real to us: only when we have assigned it a quantity can we understand what it means to us and how we can use it. Imagine that you are given a chest full of gold coins. You thank your benefactor and take it home. As soon as the door is securely bolted, what's the first thing you do? Count them, of course. Sure, it feels great to be able to say, "I'm a rich man." But if you want to do something with your riches, you have to know: How much? "And you shall count for yourselves from the morrow of the Shabbat, from the day on which you bring the Omer offering, seven complete weeks they shall be; until the morrow of the seventh week, you shall count fifty days... And you shall proclaim that very day a holy festival" (Leviticus 23:15-21)

Numbers

The people of Israel departed Egypt on the 15th of Nissan, celebrated ever since as the first day of Passover. Seven weeks later, on the 6th of Sivan--marked on our calendar as the festival of Shavuot--we assembled at the foot of Mount Sinai and received the Torah from G-d. Every year, we retrace this journey with a 49-day "Counting of the Omer." Beginning on the second night of Passover, we count the days and weeks. "Today is one day to the Omer," we proclaim on the first night of the count. "Today is two days to the Omer," "Today is seven days,

which are one week to the Omer", "Today is twenty-six days, which are three weeks and five days day to the Omer," and so on, until: "Today is forty-nine days, which are seven weeks to the Omer." The fiftieth day is Shavuot. The Kabbalists explain that we each possess seven powers of the heart-love, awe, beauty, ambition, humility, bonding and regality--and that each of these seven powers includes elements of all seven. These are represented by the seven weeks and forty-nine days of the Omer count. Every Passover, we are granted a treasure chest containing the greatest gift ever given to man--the gift of freedom. It is also a completely useless gift. What is freedom? What can be done with it? Nothing, unless we open the treasure chest and count its contents. So on the second day of Passover, after we've taken home our treasure, we start counting. We count seven times seven, because the gift of freedom has been given to each of the seven powers and forty-nine dimensions of our soul. Indeed, what use is a capacity for love, if it is a slave to external influences and internal neurosis? Of what value is ambition, if we are its pawn rather than its master? Each evening for the next seven weeks, we open our treasure chest and count another coin. We count our loving love, intimidating love, beautiful love, ambitious love, humble love, bonding love and regal love. We assign a number to the regality of our awe ("Today is fourteen days, which are two weeks to the Omer") and to the beauty of our humility ("Today is thirty-one days, which are four weeks and three days to the Omer"). We count them all--and then we present ourselves at Mount Sinai.• By Yanki Tauber

weren't capable of offering the Paschal Lamb in its proper time on the 14th of Nisan, due to impurity or distance from the Temple, should offer the Paschal Lamb exactly one month later, on the 14th of Iyar. Jewish holidays are not commemorations of historical events; rather, they are spiritual reenactments. No two holidays are alike—every holiday features a distinct spiritual energy, offering us the opportunity to gain inspiration and the necessary spiritual powers in a specific area of our service of G-d. On Passover we receive the strength to liberate ourselves from our natural enslavement to our impulses and destructive habits; on Shavuot we tap into the core of the Torah, recommitting ourselves to connecting with G-d through its study; and on Sukkot we fill the reservoirs of

If the Milk Can't be Unspilled, Why Not Cry? Pesach Sheni, "the Second Passover," is observed on the 14th of Iyar. The origin of this semi-holiday is quite fascinating. On the first anniversary of the Exodus, while all the Jews were occupied with preparing their lambs for the annual Paschal Offering, Moses was approached by a small group of Jews who were ritually impure and thus excluded from offering, or partaking of, the Paschal Lamb. They weren't satisfied with their "exemption" from this Passover mitzvah. "Why should we be deprived?" they exclaimed. "We, too, want to experience the spiritual freedom gained by participating in the Paschal service!" Moses agreed to convey their grievance to the Almighty, and incredibly, the heartfelt wishes of this small group caused G-d to add a mitzvah to the Torah. G-d instructed that from that year and onwards all those who

our hearts with true joy. We stock up on these unique spiritual powers, enough to last us for an entire year, until the holiday returns once again. The mitzvot unique to each holiday are tools which enable us to tap into the spiritual energies present at that time. Immediately after Passover we are taught an important lesson; a lesson which applies to all the following holidays, too. Passover is the first holiday of the year; the "holiday calendar" commencing on the 1st of Nissan. Immediately after this holiday we are taught an important lesson; a lesson which applies to all the following holidays, too. Indeed, there is a biblically mandated designated time for Passover, but a person who for one reason or another has missed out and did not take advantage of the benefits which the holiday has to offer can info@communitylinks.info

have a personal Passover whenever he sincerely yearns for Divine assistance in gaining personal redemption. According to Kabbalah, the months of Nissan and Iyar are diametrical opposites: Nissan is a month pervaded by Divine Kindness; the month when G-d redeemed -- and redeems -even those who are unworthy of redemption. Iyar, on the other hand, is a month of discipline and self-improvement; the month when we count the Omer and are involved in personal refinement in order to earn the right to receive the Torah in the following month. Yet, the penitent Jew has the ability to experience a Nissan redemptive holiday even during the month of Iyar!

well on their way toward receiving the Torah—and I haven't even begun my spiritual journey! I'm impure!" Don't despair, you too can make the Passover leap and join everyone else in their state of Redemption, worthy of receiving the Torah on the holiday of Shavuot. It's no use crying over spilt milk, because G-d has an infinite supply of milk which can be accessed anytime—provided that we have a sincere thirst, and express to Him this feeling. May we soon merit to see the coming of Moshiach when we – who in our current exiled condition are "impure" due to our "distance" from G-d – will all bring the Paschal Lamb in the Third Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Amen! •

The lesson of Pesach Sheni is that it is never too late. Never think: "everyone else has already left Egypt weeks ago and is
