Leading Jews Toward Tradition, Even in Death: The Unique Contributions of Hy Arnesty About 20 years ago, Hy Arnesty retired from his work as a salesman for a large toy company. Many retirees move to the Desert or to Florida. Others travel or relax by the pool. One man, Hy Arnesty, embarked on a new life’s journey. Along the way, he has helped to shape Jewish life in Los Angeles in important ways, bringing Jews closer to tradition, even in death. A couple of decades ago, Hy realized that with retirement, he had a lot of time on his hands. He volunteered to serve as Chair of the Cemetery and • 323-965-1544 •

Burial Committee of Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel, the large Sephardic synagogue on Wilshire Boulevard. In the past, this position involved overseeing the dozens of plots that have been purchased by the synagogue and are available to families who have suffered loss. But Hy saw in this position far more. An Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict, Hy was assigned during the Korean War to help families who had experienced the loss of a loved one in the war. He knew that helping families after the passing of a loved one info@communitylinks.info

s xc

involved more than just the purchase of a burial site. He soon expanded the committee role and his position. Hy gave out his phone number to the entire community to call whenever someone died. He offered to go to the Jewish mortuaries with the families who suffered loss. He arranged with the mortuaries to have traditional preparation for burial for the Sephardic families he brought in. Cremations, a procedure which violates Jewish law, were no more in the community as Hy explained appropriate procedures to each family. Appropriate services and burials were arranged. He arranges the traditional Huevo service and meal after the family returns from the cemetery as well as the Mincha and Arvit (Maariv) services following the funeral. Hy himself asks to speak at the funeral service inviting the families to come on Shabbat to services to recite Kaddish. He guides the families through the first 30 days and the months of mourning which follow. He ensures that a memorial candle is lit in the synagogue and that each family is informed of the anniversary of the passing. Hy Arnesty, a retired toy salesman, has brought tradition to thousands of families over the past two decades. He has guided people, many of whom are virtual strangers to Judaism and Jewish tradition, to the path of tradition. He makes an unpleasant and difficult time very meaningful for families. His efforts have helped to maintain Sephardic traditions. He helps families do what is right. Hy does not get paid for his work. He even spends much of his own funds as he travels many miles to the homes of children of the deceased and to mortuaries and cemeteries throughout Southern California. Hy Arnesty is not “frum” (religiously observant) in the way we often think about a Jew who devotes his life to restoring and maintaining tradition, though he is a synagogue Jew who states that he has gone to every Shabbat service at the Sephardic Temple for the past 20 plus years. He is not trained as a Rabbi. He is not a teacher in the traditional sense. Yet, in his calm manner, he instructs on average a couple of families each week in what is appropriate after a death according to Jewish tradition. He guides synagogue members as well as unaffiliated who call him because they do not know where else to turn.

Hy Arnesty’s other love is the Jewish War Veterans association, as he has long held leadership positions in the Hollywood post. He combines his veteran duties and his position in the synagogue in some interesting ways. flag presentation when requested by the family. Each military vet is saluted. Hy also chairs one of the largest Memorial Day commemorative services at a local Jewish cemetery. Here is a man who lives for country and community. Hy Arnesty has been nominated for California Veteran of the Year. It has been my personal privilege to second that nomination. But based on his work on behalf of those who pass away and their families in the Jewish Community, I would recommend the highest honors in the community for Hy. In time of need, he is always there. He brings hundreds closer to Jewish tradition. He helps mourners to do what is right. When you call the Arnesty home and he is not there, as he is so often out helping families in need, the phone machine answers with the words, “Arnesty is the best policy.” Indeed, calling Hy to help in properly mourning for a loved one is the best policy. On behalf of the Jewish community of Southern California, thanks go out to Hy. Hy Arnesty deserves the honor of Veteran of the Year. And so much more! Robert J. the Rav appeared and the group entered to greet him warmly. In a few minutes the town dignitaries converged on the inn with their students and children all in line to meet the great sage.

"If there shall be an impoverished person from among you or any of your brethren in your cities... you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand against your destitute brother. Rather you should shall surely give him and you shall not harden your heart when you give him" (Deuteronomy 15:7-10).

Terribly embarrassed, the innkeeper, who realized that he had berated and humiliated a leading Torah figure, decided to beg forgiveness from the Rav.

The repetitive expression and emphasis on the word him is troubling. "You shall surely give him and not feel bad" would suffice. Why is the phrase "when you give him" necessary? The Torah is referring to the person to whom you have given. It tells us not to feel bad about giving charity. Why the extra phrase about the recipient?

The Rav replied. "I would love to, but you see that would be impossible."

Rabbi Yosef Dov Soleveitchik, the Rav of Brisk, was revered throughout Europe as a foremost scholar and Talmudic sage. One aspect of his character was known to shine even brighter than his scholarship - his humility.

"Rebbe," he cried, "I am terribly sorry. I had no idea that you were the Brisker Rav. Please forgive me."

"But why?" asked the owner in shock.

Giving Personally

Once, he stopped by an inn in the middle of a freezing night and asked for lodging. He had no entourage with him, and the innkeeper treated him with abuse. He did not disclose who he was, and after pleading with the innkeeper, he was allowed to sleep on the floor near a stove. The innkeeper, thinking that the man was a poor beggar, did not offer him any food and refused to give him more than a little bread and water for which Rabbi Soleveitchik was willing to pay. The next morning Rabbi Soleveitchik did not see the shocked expression on the face of the innkeeper when a few of the town notables came to the inn. "We understand that the Brisker Rav was passing through this town. Is it possible that he came by your inn last night?" At first, the innkeeper dismissed the question - until

"You see, "explained the sage. "You are coming to ask forgiveness from the Brisker Rav. That is not who you insulted. You debased a simple Jew who came for lodging - and he is no longer here to forgive you."

The Torah explains that there are in essence two parts to tzedaka - the patron and the recipient. Often the giver becomes detached from the recipient; he wants to give but has no concern for the receiver. He may even have disdain for the person at the door, but the mitzvah of tzedaka overrides his pre-judgement and a contribution is given. Perhaps the Torah stresses the words "do not feel badly in your heart when you give to him," to teach us an important lesson. In addition to the mitzvah of giving, one should identify with the recipient too. Know the true situation of the person to whom you are giving. Understand what you are giving for. Be sure that when you are giving to him, your heart should not be in bad spirits. The Torah recognizes the simplest beggar as someone worthy enough to have his pronoun repeated. "Surely give him; do not feel bad in your heart when you give him." If the Torah is careful enough to classify the beggar as an individual who transcends a generic recipientand transform him into a personal beneficiary, then perhaps he is worthy of recognition by all of us. •

This week the Torah teaches us about charity. Not only does it tell us who to give, it tells us how to give. And it does so in an uncharacteristic and seemingly repetitive fashion.

office of a prominent businessman, one who had strayed from the path paved in Europe by his parents and grandparents, Rabbi Shapiro was asked an unusual question.

Rashi quotes the Talmud in Makos that there were signs posted at each crossroad pointing and declaring, "Refuge! Refuge!" each pointing the way to the nearest refuge city.

Rabbi Shapiro smiled. "Let me explain: Hashem not only wants that the Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin should thrive, he wants as many people in America as possible to know what is happening there as well! Had one man given me a check, and I would have taken the next boat back, I never would be talking to you about Yiddishkeit, about your heritage, your past, and your future! Now however, I meet hundreds of Jews who have heard about the tremendous love for Torah that our students have. They have heard the beauty of their mission and their devotion to the cause of learning Torah. They know what Tractate we are studying and how we apply Torah to everyday life.

But, why? If road signs should be erected, shouldn't they be for Jerusalem, guiding the thousands of tri-annual travelers from the north and south who journeyed there for the shalosh regalim? Why should cities that house manslaughter offenders, get guideposts while the holiest city of Israel doesn't?

"Rabbi," the industrialist proposed, "why is it that you have to see so many Jews to accomplish your goal? If Hashem wanted your Yeshiva to flourish, why didn't He arrange that you meet just one philanthropist who will undertake the entire project, by adding a few zeros to the amount of his check? After all," continued the magnate. There are plenty of modern institutions in the US that have been established by one benefactor!"

Road Signs to Eternity

Rav Meir Shapiro, established one of Europe's most prestigious Yeshivos of its era. The Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin, not only housed a magnificent Bais Medrash, it had a spacious dormitory and dining hall. Its fine accommodations would spare Yeshiva boys the embarrassment of having to eat teg, virtually begging for meals in the homes of wealthier business people. But in order for the students not to plead, Rabbi Shapiro did. And so he traveled around the globe, crossing the ocean to the US and Canada, to raise funds for the beautiful Yeshiva. In fact, he even served as a cantor in a prestigious North American congregation in lieu of a one thousand dollar gift to the Yeshiva.

Some ask about the size of the building and all about the Sifrei Torah that will be place in the Aron Kodesh. When someone with a single check endows a music hall, nobody else gets involved in its development and its intricate details become the obsession of individuals, not the shared responsibility of a community! So there is no excitement, no involvement, no buzz! You can't build enthusiasm in that manner. Imagine the scene: A man kills accidentally; he has to flee to the city of refuge. He does not know where the city is. He knocks on a door. "Hello," he exclaims to the startled homeowner, "I just killed someone, um… accidentally. Do

Rabbi Mordechai Kaminetzky • www.torah.org

The Torah not only tells us how to live our lives and where to go, this week it tells us how to get there as well! First the Torah tells us about a man who was negligent and accidentally killed someone. We are to establish cities of refuge where he can flee and live until he can return home. "You shall separate three cities for yourselves in the midst of your Land, which Hashem, your G-d, gives you to possess it" (Deuteronomy 19:2). But the Torah does more than tell us to build cities of refuge. In an unprecedented command, it establishes a highway commission, telling us, "Prepare the way for yourself, … and it shall be for any murderer to flee there.”

you know where the Ir Miklat (city of refuge) is?" Anxiety, depression and even despair is fostered. The buzz is bad. There are murderers loose. And when they inform the public, often enough of their misdeeds, it sets an apathetic tone, where reckless manslaughter becomes the norm. The shock of death is dulled, and it becomes part of the repertoire of the urban experience. And wanton disregard becomes contagious. And the virus of sin spreads rapidly. And so the signs are set and the directions are clear and the murderers flee taking refuge in clearly marked cities, no questions asked, at least until the situation is adjudicated. On the other hand, take the trip to Jerusalem: The city with no directional advisories. Imagine: There is a crossroad. There is no sign. One must knock on a door. "Excuse me, do you know how to get to Jerusalem?"

In his commentary on Torah, the great sage and mystic Rabbi Chaim ibn Atar explains that Nadav and Avihu died from an overdose of love.

tially created from man she therefore can live together harmoniously. Had woman had been created separately there would never be a true harmony. For some there are problems between men and women are with communication and arguments. For example: When a man asks his wife to have an extra guest in the house. She may say, “No problem, sure or O.K.” Why doesn’t she say “Look,

SHALOM BAYIS PEACE ON THE HOME FRONT fashioned from Adam’s rib. The creation of humankind is different than all other creations. Why was man created singular? Jewish philosophors teach that in order for a man and woman to live a harmonious life they had to be created from one place. As we know, man is very different from woman. So how is it possible that male and female are able to marry and bond? It is because the male and female are not two separate people, they are really one. At marriage the female returns to the male, fusing and becoming one, humankind. Because the woman was ini-

I am worn out, I have been taking care of the children all week and I am tired. I refuse to have a guest.” She may be frightened to speak up. When the woman really wants to have a guest she will say “It’s my pleasure.” When a person says “no problem, sure, or O.K.” they really don’t mean it. This is worse than saying no. I believe there is a tremendous need for the people to speak up and explain their feelings. An argument is only good if one has the intent to express one’s feelings. You don’t have to argue to win, you need to argue to express your feelings. Spouses info@communitylinks.info

hen the Almighty G-d created life on earth he created male and female. Both were created at the same time. Animals were created male and female, as was the sea and sky creatures. In the Torah it states, “G-d said: ‘Let us make man in our image’... And G-d created man in His own image.” The only life created singular was man. Later the Torah relates how Eve was

have the right to express themselves and to say what they feel. One should not be intimidated to the extent that they can’t express themselves. One of the reasons people don’t express themselves is because they think they have to be able to win the argument or else they look bad. That is wrong. In the Torah we find a perfect example of a good argument. G-d reveals himself to Abraham, at age 100, telling him he is going to have a son. Sarah hears about this and she laughs. G-d comes to Abraham and tells Abraham “Why did your wife laugh?” Abraham says “Sarah, why did you laugh?” Sarah says “I did not laugh.” The Al-mighty G-d told Abraham that Sarah laughed and Sarah answers that she did not. Abraham expresses himself, Sarah expresses herself. Nowhere in our rabbis’ commentaries do we find that they had a fight and/or went to a marriage counselor. They were able to express their feelings, whether right or wrong and they continued on. Another case in the Jewish writings is regarding the birth of Samson. Samson’s mother was told by G-d, by an angel, that she is going to become pregnant. Her child, Samson, would grow up to be a hero of the Jewish people. The mother goes home and tells her husband, Menoa. She says that an angel told her that she will have a child blessed by G-d to become a great leader. Menoa doesn’t believe her. He say’s “When this angel comes why don’t you call me and I’ll speak to the angel,”suggesting that this would never take place. Sure enough, the angel comes again to the wife and repeats the prophecies. She tells her husband who then meets the angel and asks the angel “What are we supposed to do?” The angel says “listen to G-d and your wife.” Imagine, the angel tells the husband to listen to the wife. The wife is clever enough never to put the husband down. All through the story she is called the wife of Menoa. We are never told her name. She was smarter and more worthy to see the angel. She is careful to let her husband feel good. These are two examples from the scriptures of where we see arguments are not for winning, they are for expressing one’s self. If we need to find help it ought to be from a religious person that truly understands the needs of expression and commitment. Our religion has answers and guide lines. They teach us how to live and most of all how to get along with each other. Rabbi Eli Hecht, Chabad of South BayVicePresident, Rabbinical Alliance of America. E-mail rabbieh@aol.com

You’re Fired! The Kosher Leather Company Ltd felt it was time for a shake-up and advertises for a new Managing Director. Morris gets the job. Morris is determined to rid the company of all slackers. On his first tour of the factory, he sees a young man leaning against a wall. The area is full of production workers and he thinks this is a good time to let them all know he means business. Morris walks up to the man and asks, "How much money do you make a week?"
