Why do we keep asking for things from God? Maybe there is another side to Rosh Hashanah. Maybe we should ask God what He needs.

By Robert J. Rome, Ph.D.

For decades here in America, we have been operating by a set of assumptions. Among these assumptions: 1. If you work hard on your job and, show loyalty to your employer, your work will be rewarded. And 2. If you go to school and achieve a degree, you will get a higher level job and will have greatly increased earning potential. Our parents and counselors at school shared the promises of our society with us. Go to school. Learn a profession. You will be rewarded. These were the “rules” on which we were raised. We accepted them. We lived by them. For a couple of generations, these rules seemed to apply in America. Those with a college degree earned 1½ million more dollars on average than their high school grad counterparts. Those who completed a profession earned even more. We went to college. We got our degrees. We were licensed. And for the most part, we have earned appropriate incomes.

office availability, share research, and otherwise post information that may of interest to others in the field. Since the May and June graduations from the various psychology schools, a frequent posting is “Willing to Work for Free” as new graduates want to do the one year of postdoctoral experience which is required for licensed. Spend $200,000 on a graduate education, work hard and graduate, then work for free. I share what is going on in psychology as that is what I know best. The same is true for other professions. I know of two very talented law school graduates who had to take part-time jobs as they could not find appropriate full-time positions. I have heard of professionals who are working at Starbucks. They enrolled in college, worked hard, acquired their degrees… and they now work at Starbucks. The “deal” is off. The promises made to our now adult children are not being fulfilled. These are difficult times. New grads can’t get jobs. Long-time employees are laid off. Many are asked to work reduced hours.

That was then. These are different times. My daughter recently completed her doctoral degree in psychology. Of about 120 doctoral graduates in psychology, I have seen only about 12 job postings for entrylevel doctoral psychologists. For the first time ever, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health had no positions for entry-level psychologist positions. They had initially posted two entry-level positions, but, just as there are few entry-level positions, there are few more advanced positions. Two more senior psychologists who could not get jobs at their level took the more junior jobs. My daughter was privileged to be offered one of the 12 available positions, but the joy is limited as her colleagues and fellow students go without.

This is not only a recession. This period seems like a game changer. The rules have changed. They don’t seem to apply anymore.

A Whole New World for a Whole New Year

The Los Angeles County Psychological Association has a “listserv” where psychologists and students list job or

Instead of the graduates rejoicing over their new job, graduates are moving back home with their parents. Plans are put off. Students now have to begin repayment of college loans, even before they get any income. This creates great pressure. This year has appeared worse financially than the year before. What is in store as we face the coming year? What can we do as individuals? Many of us have clients who can no longer pay their obligations. More of us are taking more and more cases on a sliding fee schedule. Occasionally, a Rabbi or some other leader in the community will call and ask that I see a family who is in desperate need pro bono. More work, less pay.

Law firms have a reduction in income. Retail stores have declining business. Many businesses have gone bankrupt. Stores along Ventura Boulevard have “for rent” signs. This is not just a recession. So what can we do as we face Rosh Hashanah and the New Year? This is where I might, as I have done in previous articles, ask you to open up your homes and your Sukkot on the holidays to those in need. I would ask you to shop at stores with declining sales. I would encourage you to take more pro bono cases and to forgive bills owed to you.

But I would like to suggest something different, something additional.

No Copay, No Share of Cost Or

Our synagogues and Jewish agencies are hurting. Food banks are serving more than ever. Our Rabbis are giving families money for a place to stay. The charitable needs of the community are draining the funds of our community institutions. On top of the money being handed out, donations to many institutions have declined as the economy has worsened. Synagogues that “sell” High Holiday seats are finding fewer people who can pay the full asking price. Shuls sold fewer seats last year than the year before. This year, they are likely to sell fewer tickets. Where donations are given by those called to the Torah, individuals are likely to give less than last year. The need of our synagogues is so much greater, yet the outlook for contributions is so much worse. We need to contact our Rabbis and ask how we may help. When called upon, give the most you can. Help in whatever way you can when asked. If a home is needed to help provide a holiday meal for a family, volunteer. Be available. Be as generous as you can. If we work together and help each other, we will survive this economic downturn which hopefully will soon end. As times improve, we will remain as a united community, our community institutions intact and our families strengthened.

Those two verses are an amazing contrast. Though the People of the Book may be as far-flung as the heavens themselves, the Book is always within our reach. Ultimately however, both the far-flung Jew and the Book he or she is meant to observe will always land together.

The story is told of Reb Chaikle, a poor tailor from Lodz, who had recurring dreams. Each night his father would appear to him and tell him about a secret fortune. All he had to do was travel to Vienna and visit the royal palace. Exactly 50 yards from the palace, explained his father, was an old oak tree. Under that tree, his father told him, lies a great treasure. All Reb Chaikle had to do was dig under the tree, and all his financial problems would be solved. At first, Reb Chaikel ignored the dreams, but they kept repeating night after night, and he felt compelled to travel to Vienna and seek his fortune. He camped out near the palace and waited for an opportune moment to begin the dig to fortune. At midnight on a moonless night he stealthily crept up to the tree and began to dig. His shovel did not get a chance to strike dirt when he felt a rough hand squeeze the back of his neck.

Spaced Out!

The meaning of the message is surely open to analysis. What does the Torah mean by telling us that Torah is not in heaven? We all know that. After all, aren't we reading those verses on Shabbos, in synagogue, here on earth?

Rashi explains that the Torah means to tell us that if the Torah was actually in heaven we would have to find a way to retrieve it, bring it back to earth, and study it! Quite a prescient prediction of space-travel! But, I imagine, if a possible cure for cancer or the quest for other scientific discoveries prompted a multi-billion dollar space program with a goal to land on the moon, Mars and our other celestial neighbors, the quest for morality would have propelled us there thousands of years prior! Perhaps, however, we can use an old Jewish story to see how the Torah is entreating us in a different vein.

"Jew!" shouted the palace guard. "What on earth are you doing at twelve midnight, 50 yards from the palace gates, shoveling dirt?" Reb Chaikel had no choice but to tell the story of the dream and the great fortune that lay beneath the oak tree that he was about to dig up. He even offered to split the booty, if only the guard would let him go. "You idiot!" laughed the guard. "Everyone has dreams. In fact, I myself even dreamt that if I would go to the city of Lodz in Poland, and dig in the basement of some Jewish tailor named Chaikel, I, too, would find a fortune! Hah!

by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

The Torah, this week's portion tells us, is not in space. “We do not have to travel to the heavens, nor cross the seas to learn it. It is close to our hearts and our lips to do and observe” (Deuteronomy 30:12). Though the Torah is not in the heavens, that is not always the case with the Jews! We read this week that sometimes the Jewish people will be so dispersed that "if your exiles are scattered at the end of the skies, Hashem will gather them from there" (Deuteronomy 30:4).

Now get lost!" Legend has it that Reb Chaikel returned to Lodz, and after a little digging in his own home became a very wealthy man. Sometimes we look at the Torah's goals as way up in space! We look at the mitzvos as nearly impossible tasks that are as difficult to achieve and perform as landing on the moon. We view them as hurdles that are impossible to overcome and not feasible to attempt. We must travel to distant lands and perform incredulous feats.

The Torah assures us twice that it is within our reach. A Jewish soul may be lost in space, but Hashem will find a way to bring him home. Whether through a chance meeting with an observant Jew stuck in Thailand, or seated next to him or her on an airplane circling Dallas airport, Hashem will find him. Next, the Torah assures us that its very manual is a lot closer to practical observance than people may imagine. One may think it takes extensive efforts to become something he imagines is way beyond his reach.

Old City of Jerusalem

I write this as I sit here, feeling so fortunate. I find myself literally in the center of the Universe. Oh, how I wish I can capture this moment! I am sitting here with my children, in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Here, from where G-d began creating the world. Here, where our Matriarchs and Patriarchs walked. Here, where King David lived and composed the Book of Psalms. Here, where the first and second Holy Temples stood and were later destroyed. Here, where three times a day, Jews around the world face in earnest prayer. Here, the gateway to Heaven for all of our prayers. Here, where we will one day see peace and the restoration of G-d's Throne... And here I am, looking after my son who is making cartwheels on the cobblestone. Here my daughters are giggling as they balance on the large stone steps. It is 9 pm, yet here I see children enjoying refreshing popsicles, riding bikes. Here I see a little girl pushing a stroller, taking her baby brother for a pre bedtime walk. Here I see people talking, laughing, with

incredible energy. From here, I cannot bring myself to leave. The air is cool, with a beautiful breeze. The moon is bright. The sky is dark. Here I see the Churbah Shul, so magnificent, with such a bittersweet and rich history. Destroyed and rebuilt, twice, now standing in full glory... Here is an example of the immortality of our People. And here sit men, women, children, Bubbys and Zaidys. No one is rushing anywhere. There seems to be nowhere to go! An oasis in time. Just sitting and breathing in the holy air is enough to satisfy both body and soul. I leave tonight. Back "home". But I literally feel pain in my heart just thinking of leaving this city, my true home. We hear music! A brand new Torah Scroll is being escorted to a Shul in the old city. I am uplifted by the melodies, a violin, accordion, singing, dancing, as the beloved torah is danced thru the walkways. We all rise and clap and join in the greatest joy that unites all Jews. Differences melt away in the presence of our Holy Torah, in this Holy City. A man with a big kippah offers my daughter to choose from his basket of candies as he

dances by... I won’t forget this. Neither will my kids. How to leave? We cannot... “If I forget you, Oh Jerusalem, my right hand will be forgotten…” It is here that King David wrote and sang these words... And so I will not forget, nor will I leave. If G-d wishes for us to end up on that plane tonight, leaving the Holy Land - I will not allow my spirit to leave. I will stay put! My body and soul will remain right here, with the holy and ancient stones under my feet, keeping me grounded as I travel back to Oxnard, California. And, I will not rest. Truly, I will not allow myself to get comfortable, until I have done my part to see that the entire Oxnard becomes Jerusalem, permeated with Jewish life, Jewish pride, and an era of Redemption. I will sign off by sharing with you my favorite prophecy of Zachariah, regarding the times of the coming of Moshiach (which I quoted in my Bat Mitzvah speech some years ago!): “Again will sit elderly men and elderly women in the streets of Jerusalem.” Let us join together to sit in the streets again, experiencing G-d’s presence, with joy and with health. Amen! Shalom! Racheli Muchnik

I

t’s Rosh Hashanah again. The Jewish New Year arrives on Wednesday night, September 28th. Jews will mark their calendar new year with the number 5772 since creation. Families will meet at prayer services and spend time praying to G-d for a blessed year. At least one family meal will be had with the customary apple dipped in honey symbolizing the hope for a sweet year. With the holiday spirit comes some serious thinking. Why is there so much suffering? We continue to be puzzled and shocked with the needless shootings and killings at schools, workplaces, and most recently in Isreal. We think, whatever happened to G-d? Why is there no G-dly intervention. As a believer in G-d I understand that there is intervention. True, there are acts of G-d like fires and earthquakes for which there is absolutely no

understanding, but man’s contribution to suffering troubles me. For answers, I look at traditional Jewish writings. In the Talmud, Megillah 29a, there is a statement “Wherever the Jews were exiled, G-d’s Divine Presence, accompanied them. When they will return to the Holy Land, G-d will return with them.” This means that G-d is with His people. What ever happens to His people affects G-d. It would be correct to state that if people suffer, then G-d, the Divine Presence, suffers. Now the question should not be why do we suffer, but why should G-d have to suffer? We experience bad things and G-d suffers with us. Why? In G-d’s master plan for humankind there are provisions made for man’s accountability. It is like a partnership.

Some things we do while G-d does other things. For example, G-d creates the world, then man is placed in it and is given the freedom of choice to enhance or destroy it. Think for a moment, the three basic things we need for existence are water, air and bread. Of the three, two are freely provided by G-d. Bread is one of the least expensive foods and is readily available. What has humankind done with the two free gifts? I believe not so good. We have poisoned the air and polluted the water. Instead of taking advantage of the pure water and clear air, we have been steadily destroying those vital gifts. What kind of partners are we? How G-d must suffer seeing the abuse. On Rosh Hashanah Jews and non Jews must remember that G-d created man. People trace their lineage to Adam, the first man. The moment Adam opened his eyes he proclaimed G-d the King of the Universe. Adam accepted the responsibilities of caretaker of the Earth for G-d. We, his children, are responsible to care for this Earth. We are to set up courts of justice, prevent cruelty and abuse which are part of the Noachide Laws, the others being the laws of sexual decency, the prohibition of blasphemy and murder. A story is told of an ancient house of prayer in Europe that possessed an eerie sound. When entering the prayer room, you would hear a continuous sobbing sound. The closer one would walk to the ark, the stronger the sobbing was heard. The old caretaker, shamus, would tell of a story he had heard from the older shamus relating to the phenomenon dating back hundreds of years:

29 S e p t e m b e r 2 3 , 2 0 1 1

There lived a saintly man, called a tzadik, who prayed and fasted all his life. The saint was as close to an angel as possible. One night while in deep prayer, he heard G-d’s voice calling to him. “My son, tell me what you need and I will grant it.” The saintly man thought and thought. “I have clothing to wear, my health is good and I have a place to pray. I don’t need money. Nothing dear G-d,” the saintly man answered. There was a silence and then a loud sob. Thundering and lightening filled the air. G-d’s voice thundered out. “Why did you think of yourself, you should have thought of me. How I suffer for My people, for mankind, and justice for the poor and needy. Why did you not think of my suffering? Why did you not ask that my suffering cease?” The saintly man realized his sin and was too troubled to speak. From that day on he grew weaker and weaker. On his death bed he told his most trusted students his tragic story. From that day on, when entering the prayer room you could hear the sobbing, as if the prayer room was crying for G-d’s suffering at the lost opportunity. So, this New Year by all means enjoy yourself and family, dip some apple in honey, pray for a good year and most of all pray for an end of suffering: your suffering, my suffering and, most of all, G-d’s suffering. • Rabbi Eli Hecht, Chabad of South Bay Vice President, Rabbinical Alliance of America (310) 326-8234 (310) 326-1555, E-mail rabbieh@aol.com

an atomic armory, will spend its ammunition without achieving total annihilation? Reb Yosef Friedenson, editor of Dos Yiddishe Vort, tells the story of how he and a group of friends were in a smithy shop in the iniquitous labor camp in the town of Starachowice. The camp was notorious, and though the overseer of the factory in which they worked, a man named Pape, treated them kindly, one mistake meant that a German guard would treat them as saboteurs and shoot them dead. Assigned to the Herman Goering works one Shmini Atzeres, they were not told what their job was for that day. And so, to fulfill their holiday spirit, they broke out in a traditional song, Ain Adir kaHashem, Ain Baruch k'ben Amram (There is none as powerful as Hashem nor blessed as Moshe, the son of Amram).

Despite the harrowing foreshadowing of disaster, however, the verses of misfortune contain a message of hope as well. Moshe once again warns us of Hashem's potential wrath; yet a blessing lies within his curse, defining the very essence of the physiological indestructibility of the Jewish nation. In predicting calamitous repercussions of sin, Moshe speaks for Hashem and declares, "I shall accumulate evils against them. My arrows I shall use up against them." What does that mean?

Unstoppable Force

Rashi explains the verse according to a Talmudic explanation in Tractate Sotah. "My arrows will come to an end, but they themselves will not come to an end." The question is obvious. Is G-d's quiver limited? Can the L-rd ever be bereft of ammunition? How is it possible that the Heavenly arsenal, equipped with more power than

Pape was shocked. Despite the torture the humiliation, and the endless poisontipped arrows of the Holocaust, these people were singing!

"Why are you Jews singing?” he asked incredulously. “Do you have it so good that you can sing?" The group explained the words of the song to Pape, going through each stanza, including those that read, "there are no wise men like the scholars of the Torah, and there is no redeemer like Hashem." Pape was astonished. "After all the torture that you have been through, do you really still believe this?” Immediately, one of the younger members of the group, not a particularly religious lad, jumped up with an emphatic, “Yes!" And then each member of the troupe shouted their endorsement as well. "Of

by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

The final song of Moshe's life is read this week. Appropriate as a prelude to Yom Kippur, it talks about the great potential that the Jewish nation has within its very essence. Moshe tells us to "Remember the days of yore, understand the years of generation after generation. Ask your father, and he will relate it to you, and your elders, and they will tell you" (Deuteronomy 32:7-8). He reminds us of the glory days, when Hashem asked us to be His chosen people, accepting the yoke of Torah observance. But Moshe does not stop there. Using our tremendous capacity as a role of responsibility, he warns us of the calamitous effect if we waste or misuse our talents.

course! Surely! Without doubt!" One by one, each of those in the work-force-turned-choir exclaimed his unyielding approval. Pape soon understood that he was dealing with an indestructible people. He gesticulated wildly with both arms and declared, "I don't know how the Führer will ever get rid of you!" With that, he walked away and let them continue their relentless commitment to their unshakeable, indestructible faith. Noted scientist Isaac Asimov compiled a book of 3,000 interesting facts about the universe, history, and science. In it he deals with a longstanding question: "What would happen if an irresistible force met an immovable body?" Asimov explains that the question is ludicrous. He simply explains a physical fact. "In a universe where one of the above conditions exists, by definition the other cannot exist."

And so the Torah tells us something about the promise that Hashem made to His people. They are an immovable object. Hashem's unremitting commitment for his children has declared Judaism impregnable. And so the physical arrows He may send to chastise them cannot forever continue. They must eventually expire. Traveling with Kosherica By Yochanan Gordon Glossing through the pages of Jewish Newspapers these days you'll find an extraordinary number of Rosh Hashana and Succos related ads. More than anything else, this means that schools are in full swing, the Yomim Tovim are upon us and the summer is fading further out of our purview. During the heat of the summer the forecasters were already predicting the oncoming of the chilly weather earlier than ever, which probably means that you will be wearing layers in an attempt to keep warm during those night time seudos in the Succah. So with all the preparations required to host family and friends for an extended Rosh Hashana season, then again come Succos, and cold weather to boot, you will surely feel the need to getaway. The good news is that your vacation has been mapped out in its entirety and it is assured to be the most rewarding vacation of your life thanks to the folks at Kosherica. The Kosherica team is looking forward to their greatest winter cruise season ever. Having spoken to family friends who went with my recommendation to travel with Kosherica for the first time to Alaska this summer, I understand that outdoing such a getaway would be quite a daunting challenge, but Kosherica has set a standard for outdoing themselves with each passing travel season, so there is no better time to finally experience a vacation the way it was meant to be - you certainly owe it to yourselves. For almost two decades, the Kosherica family has been partnering with the worlds leading cruise-liners in providing the Jewish traveler with the opportunity to travel the world in five-star luxury, unparalleled kosher entertainment, dynamic and thought provoking scholars in residence and delectable kosher cuisine second to none. I like to call it therapy for the body and the soul. It is truly the most wholesome experience available. This winter, whether you are looking to travel alone or with family, Kosherica is the most logical, convenient and rewarding option to travel with and the options are endless. Kicking off the winter cruise season is a Dec. 25th Cruise which embarks from NYC to the Bahamas making stops at the beaches in Orlando, the private Island of Great Stirrup Cay and then on to Nassau before heading back to NYC. Given ten hours in Orlando and Nassau, as well as seven hours to tour Great Stirrup Cay, is plenty of time to bask in its beauty and see its historic sites before heading back to the Cruise ship and back towards the City. Oh, and if you are worried about missing the snow in NY 46 S e p t e m b e r 2 3 , 2 0 1 1

you could contact friends and family from the sun-filled, sandy beaches of Orlando and ask them where they would rather be. On January 8th, 2012 Kosherica will lead a cruise to Asia. This a fourteen night cruise will explore the fascinating sites of Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and China. China visas will be required for travelers interested in embarking on this particular cruise. This cruise has been until now uncharted territory as far as cruises are concerned, but it is indicative of Kosherica's innovation and ingenuity and it is what sets them apart from the rest of them. January 22, 2012 marks Kosherica's annual Jewish Music Festival at sea. If you are a fan of Jewish Music then there is nothing more you could ask for. This midwinter cruise to the Caribbean features the Jewish worlds most talented voices including Avraham Fried, Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, World Renowned Israeli Broadway sensation Dudu Fisher and more. What is more unique than the concerts and the heartrending cantorial Shabbos tefillos is the opportunity to spend a week with the entertainers on a more up-close and personal level, an opportunity only made available on a Kosherica cruise. If you were thinking of taking the kids along on midwinter break this January 22nd, cruise to the Caribbean aboard Royal Caribbean’s, Allure of The Seas, the world’s largest and most exciting cruise ship to date. This will probably keep the kids as well as yourselves occupied to the point that you may have to fight with them to join you for the meals or for an excursion or two. The Allure of the seas boasts an impressive 28 ultra modern loft suites, 2700 rooms and 16 decks. It is the only Cruise-liner home to the Dreamwork's experience featuring the very characters from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon. Travelers aboard this ship will have the opportunity to pose for pictures and interact with the characters during meals and watch their respective three dimensional movies in a designated onboard theatre. Kosherica spends endless attention to each nuance in its travel itinerary with the traveller in mind. Every new destination, scholar in residence and entertainer are leaders in their respective areas of expertise. It's quite hard to fathom but all that is in addition to the intricately detailed schedule prepared by the experts at the Kosherica Family. From one season to the next the Kosherica cruises have been known to sell out quickly, so pick up your phone and dial 305-695-2700, 877-724-5567 or log onto www.kosherica.com and secure your mid-winter plans, you will thank me that you did but most importantly of all you will thank yourselves. Bon Voyage!!!

Responding to consumer demand for premium food products of the highest kashrus standards, Tnuva is pleased to announce that it's line of Maadanot frozen products including: Maadanot Cheese Puffs Bourekas, Maadanot Potato Puffs Bourekas, Malawah and Baked Jachnun, now feature the Vaadat Mehadrin Chatam Sofer and OU kosher symbols. Maadanot Phyllo Bourekas were the first of Tnuva’s frozen pastry products to feature the premium kashrus symbols earlier this year. The positive feedback from discerning kosher consumers spurred Tnuva to extend the elite kashrus branding to their entire line of pastry products.

"Thus, we are especially proud to be able to offer consumers from across the religious spectrum the most respected kashrus symbols in the industry, so that everyone can discover the secret to Maadanot's success."

What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan? Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.
