ashon Hara, lamed hay, you belong in pre-1A. This was the first cheer each of my daughters learned in preschool. (For the less informed, Lamed Hay are the initials for the Hebrew phrase for gossip, Lashon Hara. Pre-1A was what kindergarten has been called in Jewish schools--it's a long story as to why.) With this simple chant, gossip is established as something only a kindergartner would do.

In regard to Lashon Hara, my girls have taught me a lot from what they have learned. Of course, you need to refrain from speaking ill of others. But my daughters taught me, after learning from their teachers, that Lashon Hara goes much further. You should generally refrain from speaking about others, good or bad. What seems like a positive comment to some, actually may lead to embarrassment or other negative feelings, especially for those who show the humility that we admire so much. Combating Lashon Hara has to be a universal goal as speaking gossip about others has been likened to murder as you may destroy a person's reputation and standing. When you consider the increased level of education of the American population with an increase not only in college degrees, but an increase in professional and graduate studies as well, you would think that the American popu8 November 18, 2011

lation would act in a more informed, educated way. Instead, we have developed a technology where we get gossip on an entirely “higher” level. We can destroy rabbis, presidential candidates, and others in one Facebook or blog posting or social network tweet. We don’t require accusers to be named. We don’t require evidence. The latest “evidence” simply refers to the unfounded previous reports. Millions of people can “hear” Lashon Hara without minutes, sometimes within seconds. All our education, all of our technology seems to be driving our civilization deep into the gutter. It does seem that we have embarked on a capability for “high tech lynchings.” For those who think I’m referring to the gossip surrounding presidential politics, I’m thinking first of all about the total destruction of Michael Jackson in a trial designed to seek justice for his death. Now, you may all have negative opinions of Jackson from the accusations in previous court cases, forgetting that he was found innocent of the various charges. But no matter how you feel about Jackson, prior to this trial you could picture this great entertainer “moonwalking.” You could remember the energy of his performances. You could remember the beauty of some songs, the power and beat of others. No matter what you felt personally about his character,

Michael Jackson was rightfully hailed as one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Yet, in this trial, we heard the drunken/stoned, pitiful voice of Jackson on a phone message machine. We saw the pictures of the “pharmacy” of drugs on his bedstand. We heard testimony regarding his out of control addictions. While prosecuting Dr. Murray may have had a purpose, the gossip that was perpetuated along with the destruction of the memory of Michael Jackson was just not worth it. The Lashon Hara within the trial was out of control. The reputation of Michael Jackson died as surely in this trial as the life of Michael Jackson passed on two years earlier. This was a tragedy on top of a tragedy. Anyone who shops in a supermarket has seen the magazine covers with pictures of Kim Kardashian, a woman whose very existence is based on gossip. Sorry for quoting from the gossip, but supposedly she sold rights to her wedding for a total of $10,000,000, including the televising of the wedding and the publishing of the wedding pictures. Her wedding to the basketball star lasted all of 72 days. This “storybook” wedding and marriage had no substance. It was a relationship founded on gossip. The casualty of the 72-day fiasco: The sanctity of marriage. The Message: Marriage is something for sale. There are no dreams fulfilled. That is the message now thrust on the generation of our children. Substance does not matter, only style. Gossip is catapulted to what is important in this upside world. How did this happen? What is next? The two-day marriage? A “highly educated” young man in his mid-twenties came to me during the 2008 election and asked me in all seriousness, “Did you hear how Sarah Palin’s child is really the child of her middle daughter?” Here was a man with an advanced professional degree and a couple years of actual work experience. And yet, he accepted as truth gossip which was on its surface unbelievable. How did we get to this point where a vice presidential candidate for a major party could have such rumors perpetuated without any system of checks? How did we get to the point where a person can be “slimed” without any truth or any liability for those spreading these rumors?

And for those who think I may only advocate for Republicans, what about the years of gossip regarding President Obama’s place of birth? In the end, it does not even matter where he was born as there are provisions for children of American citizens to become citizens when born while the American parent is out of the country. You may recall that George Romney, Mitt Romney’s father, was an Amer9 November 18, 2011

ican citizen despite his parents being on a Mormon mission in another country when he was born. He was eligible to run for President despite being born in Mexico. Senator McCain was an American citizen even though he was born in the Panama Canal Zone when his father was stationed there in the Navy. Gossip about President Obama is no better than gossip about Sarah Palin. Gossip destroys. There are many reasons to either support or oppose the President. His birth certificate and the gossip generated by discussion about it did not help our nation in any way. Governor Palin in the end could not survive the gossip. Her reputation was shattered. Again, there are many reasons to either support Governor Palin or to oppose her. Gossip should not figure into the calculation. I have learned much from my daughters. Through them, I have come to realize the broad impact of all aspects of Lashon Hara. I have questioned in this column in previous articles the very high cost of tuition to send a child to a Yeshiva of Jewish day school. While I do think there are ways to bring down the cost, I must say that the value of the Midot (values) my daughters have been taught has a worth far greater than the cost of the tuition paid. Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch explained the concept of being “The Chosen People” as meaning that we have been chosen as a people to go out into the world to teach Torah values. There is no better way to accomplish this task than to teach the Jewish mandates against Lashon Hara to the larger public. It is time to speak up as Torah-observant Jews for a higher level of public discussion and debate. It is time to time to demand more of our news media and more of politicians. It is time to say no to the magazines at the checkout stand. It is time to stop watching the meaningless weddings. It is time to look for the true heroes in our world and to forget those who are all style and no substance. We can expect more from the world, and often more from ourselves. A return to our true values will help nullify the terrible impact of a world seemingly lost in negative gossip. We can help to restore a better world.• Robert J. The Rising Waters of Menchlichkeit
Parshas Chayei Sarah Avraham [Abraham] sent his servant Eliezer on quite a difficult mission. Find a shidduch [match] for not only the world’s most eligible bachelor, but for its most spiritual. Yitzchak [Issac] was designated by Hashem to be offered as a sacrifice. He never left the land that would one day become Israel. And he was raised by the founders of Judaism, Avraham and Sarah. It isn’t easy to find a match for such a special individual. Avraham made Eliezer promise that he would not bring back a Cannanite woman for his son. Instead, Eliezer was to search among Avraham’s family in Charan and find a suitable maiden for the sacrosanct young man. Laden with gifts, Eliezer left for Charan. As a selection criteria he devised a sure-fire approach. "Avraham," he thought, "is the epitome of kindness and hospitality. Surely Avraham would want those qualities prevalent in his daughter-in-law." He prayed to Hashem to guide him. "When I arrive in Charan, I will ask a maiden for water. The maiden," he thought, "who replies by saying, ‘drink, and I shall even give your camels to drink, [and drawing 16 N o v e m b e r 1 8 , 2 0 1 1
water for camels who had just completed a long desert journey is no simple task]’ must be the one who is designated for Yitzchak." (Genesis 24:13-14) The exact scenario that had been prayed for actually occurred. As Eliezer stood by the well in Charan, Rivka [Rebbeca] walked toward it. The posuk (verse) tells us that as soon as Eliezer watched Rivka begin to draw water, he raced toward her and asked her the pre-determined questions. The gracious response led to our destiny. The Medrash questions why Eliezer raced forward to greet Rivka. It answers that as Rivka went to draw water, Eliezer saw a miraculous event. As she lowered her bucket, the waters in the well rose to greet her. Therefore Eliezer ran to greet this maiden, as this was a spiritual individual who must truly be Yitzchak’s bashert (pre-ordained). Yet, if such a miraculous event occurred, why did Eliezer continue with his pre-planned act? Why did he ask Rivka for water and wait until she responded by offering drinks to both him and his entourage? Also, when Eliezer

discusses the entire scenario with Rivka’s family and tells them why he decided upon Rivka, he repeats the story of Rivka’s grace and hospitality. Yet Eliezer fails to mention of the miraculous incident of the rising waters. In the Slobodka Yeshiva, nothing was as important as the study of Torah. Students who excelled in their diligence and ability were viewed in awe. But the greatest reverence was saved for the founder of the Yeshiva, Rabbi Nosson Zvi Finkel, the Alter [Sage] of Slobodka (1849-1927). With his brilliance, humility and great character, he set the tone of the entire Yeshiva.

One day two students were discussing a new young man, Isaac Sher, who had just entered the Yeshiva. "Isaac is a true ilui (prodigy)," said one. "He knows the entire Shas (Talmud) and Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law), by heart." After the other boy listened as the first extolled the intellectual virtues of Isaac Sher he added meekly, "I had a conversation with him the other day. He is truly a geshmahkeh mentch (man of character and charm)." "Geshmahkeh mentch?" questioned the first student in a scoffing tone. "Is that all you can say about him? We are talking about the greatest mind ever to step foot in this Yeshiva and all you can say that he is a decent and kind fellow? I see you don’t appreciate a person’s true value." With that the disgusted student began to walk away, but the towering presence of the Alter of Slobodka blocked his path. "No," he said firmly as he motioned to the humiliated student. "That young man is correct. Reb Isaac’s greatest quality is that he is a geshmahkeh mentch." The Alter eventually took Reb Isaac Sher as his sonin-law. Eliezer was emotionally impressed by the miraculous rising waters; however, he composed himself. Miracles were not the criteria needed to become Yitzchak’s wife. He knew that character transcends any miracle or genius. In finding the wife of a patriarch and mother of a nation he did not look for Rivka the miracle worker. He looked, and found, the geshmahkeh mentch.

CELEBRATING THANKSGIVING THE JEWISH WAY
I was born into a Jewish American family. My father’s family was three generation American. I was especially proud to be a fourth-generation American Jew. As a child I played a great game of baseball, read Sunday funnies and celebrated American holidays. My mother’s family was the complete opposite. They came from Europe with no appreciation for baseball or any American pastimes. As a child I went to a small cheder, a Jewish school. My classmates were children of refugees. One year I was introduced to a very strict, no-nonsense Jewish teacher - called a rebbe. This rebbe had very little patience for me, as I was very different from his European students. I was an American - a Yankee boy. According to my rebbe, all American customs were taboo. They were considered “traif,” non-kosher. Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July were all jumbled into one big no-no. He claimed that a Bible law forbids the Jewish nation to emulate the ways of other nations. He would quote the biblical verse Leviticus 18:3: “Neither shall ye walk in their statutes; do not follow their social customs.”
22 N o v e m b e r 1 8 , 2 0 1 1
However, not all Jews think that way, as we shall see. A week before Thanksgiving my father called my European grandparents and invited them to an 18 pound turkey dinner. On Thursday we would have a Thanksgiving repast. The Monday before Thanksgiving the rebbe made a speech. “Thanksgiving is forbidden. It is a pagan holiday. No Jewish boy is allowed to eat turkey.” I thought that if I ate turkey my teeth would fall out. I told my rebbe about the early Indians and the first Thanksgiving. I thought he would realize that Thanksgiving could be considered a mitzvah - good deed for both Jews and Gentiles. I told him about friendly Indians; how they saved the starving Puritans; that the Thanksgiving meal reminds us of the foods the Indians gave the settlers to survive through the rough winters in the new world. It’s a mitzvah to share and give thanks to G-d. “Yingele (sonny boy), I told you we don’t celebrate these holidays. It is forbidden to even listen to your bubbemeises (tall tales).” That night I told my dad that I wouldn’t participate in a pagan holiday. “It’s against the Bible,” I said. He flew into a rage.

“You are an American, a fourth generation American. Be proud that you have a country that believes in G-d. Thanksgiving is a Jewish idea.” He told my mother that if this continues he will take me out of that cheder, the Jewish school. For the next few years my father bought a large turkey for Thanksgiving and we had two turkey meals: one on the American Thanksgiving and one on the following Shabbos. We now celebrated Thanksgiving on the Jewish holy day of Sabbath.

My dad had a point. Thanksgiving, indeed, was a holiday that fit into the Jewish idea of thanking G-d for His goodness. We could have Thanksgiving every Sabbath. I don’t remember if Thanksgiving became a kosher holiday or not, but having two turkeys solved our family dilemma. On Oct. 3, 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the original Thanksgiving Proclamation. In it he stated, “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown.

“But we have forgotten G-d. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self–sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the G-d that made us. “It has seemed to me fit and proper that G-d should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” I think if my Rebbe would have seen this wonderful proclamation, then he might have joined us in prayer at the Thanksgiving meal.

This week the Torah tells us of the great dichotomy of character between Yaakov and his older brother Esav. Yaakov sat and studied while Esav hunted. Though it is difficult to understand the roots of this great divide, their parents' reaction to this diversity is even more confusing. The Torah tells us that "Yitzchak loved Esav for there was game in his mouth, and Rivka loved Yaakov." (Genesis 25:28) The variance in their opinions manifested itself in the fight over the blessings. Yitzchak intended that Esav receive his blessings for worldly goods, intending to save the spiritual ones for Yaakov. Rivka pushed her son Yaakov to attain the blessings for the worldly goods, too. What was the fundamental difference between Yitzchak's and Rivka's view of their children? Why was • 323-965-1544 •
there such a diverse notion as to who should inherit the wealth of this world? How is it possible that Yitzchak, who epitomized the very essence of spirituality, favored Esav, a man steeped in worldly desires? Vice President Al Gore tells a story about outgoing Senator Bill Bradley. Senator Bradley once attended a dinner at which he was a guest speaker. The waiter set down a side dish of potatoes, and placed a pat of butter upon them. The Senator asked for an extra portion of butter. "I’m sorry sir," the very unyielding server replied tersely, "one pat per guest." With a combined expression of shock, scorn, and disbelief, Senator Bradley looked up at the formal steward. "Excuse me," he said. "Do you know who I am? I am New Jersey info@communitylinks.info
Senator Bill Bradley." The Senator cleared his throat. "I am a Rhodes scholar and a former NBA star. I currently serve on the International Trade and Long-Term Growth Committee, and the Debt and Deficit Reduction Committee, and I am in charge of Taxation and IRS Oversight. And I’d like another pat of butter on my potatoes." The waiter looked down at the Senator. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. "I am the one in charge of the butter." Yitzchok understood the great contrariety between his children. However, he felt that Esav, the hunter-child, understood the mundane world much better. So it was only fitting that Esav be gifted with the blessings of a mundane world. Esav would then supplement Yaakov’s needs, and a true symbiosis would emerge. Rivka, on the other hand, was pragmatic. She felt that putting Esav in charge of the material world would lead to selfish hoarding that would hardly give Yaakov a portion.
She understood that while Yaakov’s sustenance was basically from spirituality, he still needed a little butter to survive. And she could not rely on Esav controlling the butter: she knew the personality all too well. There would be no parity or sharing. Esav would take it all. Everybody has a job, whether it be spiritual or menial, and each job must be executed with a sense of responsibility and mission. The argument between Rivka and Yitzchak was complex, but it was simple too. Esav may be more astute in churning the butter; however, will he make sure to give Yaakov his fair share? Rivka knew that the world would be a better place if we all shared our respective portions. But she wouldn't count on it.

Kosherfest, the two-day trade show for everything kosher that attracted an estimated 6,000 people to the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, holds an annual cooking competition between renowned chefs who prepare kosher meals. Past competitions were for the best appetizer, sushi and deli sandwiches. Judging the competition, which was based on taste, presentation and creativity, were Jack Silberstein, Director of Culinary and Business Operations at Jack’s Gourmet; Chef Philippe Kaemmerle, Lead Pastry Chef at The Center for Kosher Culinary Arts; and Chaim Szmidt, editor in chief of The Kosher Scene. The competition was produced in partnership with The Center for Kosher Culinary Arts, Brooklyn, NY. In addition to hands-on cooking and baking classes for men, women and children, they offer on-site demonstrations, private cooking lessons, small catered affairs and personal chef work (www..kosherculinaryarts.com).

Love at Second Sight By Yossy Goldman Why are so many marriages failures? And why do so many fail so soon after the wedding? This week we read about the first shidduch in history. Abraham sends his trusted servant, Eliezer, to find a wife for his son Isaac. He returns with Rebecca and they live happily ever after. The verse tells us "And [Isaac] took Rebecca, she became his wife, and he loved her." So, it would appear that in the Biblical scenario, true love comes after marriage, not before. Before a marriage can take place there has to be a commonality between two people, shared values, mutual aspirations and, yes, certainly a degree of chemistry between them. But true love has to be nurtured over time. Without doubt, a primary cause of many marital breakdowns today is the unrealistic expectations that people have going into marriage. Our generation has been fed a constant diet of romantic novels, hit parade love songs, glossy magazine advice and Hollywood fiction -- all of which bear little resemblance to the real world. (Dare I suggest that Shrek is the industry's first realistic love story?) "We fell in love!" "It was love at first sight." I confess to being a bit of a romantic myself, but surely "love at first sight" has got to be a contradiction in terms. 'Love' by definition takes years to develop. If you are honest with yourself, the only thing you can feel at first sight is lust. "Love at first sight" is a monumental bobba meise. So we "fall in love" thinking it's real, hoping it will be true and lasting, and then at the slightest disappointment we fall right out of love. Which only proves that it wasn't true love in the first place. True love takes years, true love is the mature conviction that our lives are intertwined and inseparable no matter what -- even if my partner goes grey or flabby or loses his money. That kind of love is measured not in romantics but in long-term commitment. When I officiate at a wedding ceremony I make a point of observing not only the bride and groom but also their par30 N o v e m b e r 1 8 , 2 0 1 1
ents. A single glance that passes between father and mother under that chupah -- radiating nachas and feelings of shared satisfaction -- tells me that they have had a good marriage. That, to me, is more telling then the mushy swooning of the newlyweds. As exciting as it is, their love may still be in the infatuation stage. Yet untested, it's still early days. So the first rule is patience. Love takes time. It needs nurturing. Sadly, too many give up too soon. Secondly, the Hollywood effect leaves us so naively impressionable that, at first, we convince ourselves that our partner must be the proverbial Prince Charming or Princess Grace. But then, at the first sign of imperfection, "Hey, I bought a lemon! I'm outta here!" Remember, nobody is perfect. Not even you, my dear. In the passage of time we do indeed discover the little imperfections of our chosen partners. Some things can be unlearned, with gentle encouragement and, again, patience. Others, we may just have to learn to live with. Acceptance is an art. Weigh up in your mind the relative significance of minor inadequacies against the greater good in the grand scheme of things. You may very well realize that you can actually live with those small, petty irritants. Admittedly, if it's something major then you may need to go for some serious counseling. And in making these calculations consider the following: Do I stop loving myself just because I am imperfect? Do I stop loving my children because the teacher told me they were really bad at school? Of course not. Why then do I have difficulty loving my spouse because of a perceived fault? Marriage is the beginning, not the end. If we can be realistic about our relationships we can find true love. But it takes time, patience, and the wisdom to overlook the little things that can annoy us. Then, please G-d, with true commitment will come true love, togetherness, a lifetime of sharing and caring and the greatest, most enduring contentment in our personal lives. Amen.

DAYS OF MIRACLE AND WONDER BY CHIEF RABBI WARREN GOLDSTEIN
There was one moment in particular during the Conference of European Rabbis that captured the awe of Jewish destiny: the mincha prayers at Nozyk Synagogue. A momentous event took place last week: the largest gathering of rabbis in Warsaw since World War II. The Conference of European Rabbis convened in this historic city, bringing together, among others, the chief rabbis of Israel, France and the Ukraine, Rome and Moscow, Austria and Poland; and dayanim (judges) from the Batei Din (rabbinical courts) of London, Paris, Strasbourg, Lyon and Amsterdam. The conference generously invited me from faraway South Africa to deliver a speech and participate in the discussions. There was one moment in particular during the conference that captured the awe and miracle of Jewish destiny: the mincha prayers in the Nozyk Synagogue, the only synagogue not destroyed by Germans, because they had turned it into a stable. As we began mincha, I looked around the synagogue. Seeing 200 rabbis, representing almost two million Jews in communities across Europe, the words from the Book of Psalms came to mind: “Some come with chariots and some with horses but we call out in the name of Hashem our G-d. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.” Who would have thought, at the height of Nazi power, when Jews were being murdered in gas chambers and when the Nozyk Synagogue was desecrated, that one day 32 N o v e m b e r 1 8 , 2 0 1 1
rabbis representing Jewish communities throughout Europe would return with strength and confidence to this very synagogue? Who would have thought that in Germany, of all places, a yeshiva to train a new cadre of young German rabbis would be established? The Third Reich brought horrific destruction; but in the end, it lost the war against the Jews. In defiance of any normal laws of history and human nature, through the awesome miracles of G-d, the Jewish people have survived. These are indeed days of “miracle and wonder.” Some 250 years ago, long before these modern miracles, Rav Yaakov Emdin wrote that the miracles performed by G-d to ensure the survival of the Jewish people throughout the many years of exile are even greater than the aweinspiring miracles of the Exodus from Egypt – the ten plagues, the splitting of the sea, the manna falling from heaven and the Clouds of Glory. Jewish destiny defies the normal laws of history. By any logical and rational assessment, we should not exist as a separate, identifiable people after almost 2,000 years of exile, dispersion and persecution. But Gd’s plan for us rises above the limitations of the physical world. At the heart of His plan is His Torah. The miracle of the rebirth of Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel, which we have been privileged to witness in our time, is a remarkable endorsement of the prescient words of Rav Yaakov Emdin.

Torah is flourishing once more, with the great yeshivas of Europe re-established in Israel, America and all over the world; Ponivezh, Mir and Gur are alive and thriving once again. Before the conference started, my son and I went to see one of the last remaining walls of the Warsaw Ghetto. As we entered, a group of Israeli soldiers left. On their lapels was proudly emblazoned the Magen David, now the emblem of the sovereign Jewish state. It struck me how decades ago, when Jews wore the Star of David on their clothing, it was a badge of dishonor, symbolizing their certain death. It has now become a badge of life, strength and pride. Yet this kind of miraculous rebirth can be intoxicating. It is easy to forget that even now, when we have brave, strong soldiers who can defend the Jewish people, our destiny is in Hashem’s hands. We learn this lesson from King David, one of our greatest military and political leaders, who bravely led and defended the Jewish State. King David was known not only for his political power and military genius but also as a great spiritual leader, learned in Torah and imbued with deep devotion to G-d, whose faith and connection to Hashem he expressed so eloquently in his Book of Psalms, which contains the verse quoted above. According to Rashi, these words were composed by King David as a prayer for his soldiers going out to battle under the command of his general, Yoav. Rashi quotes the Gemara (Sanhedrin 49a) which states that the military victory of Yoav and his troops was in the merit of King David’s prayers. Rashi interprets the verse “some come with chariots and some with horses” to mean that some
of the nations of the world place their trust in chariots and horses but we rely on Hashem because ultimately all salvation and victory comes from Him. Our Sages teach us that we are not allowed to rely on miracles. Thus, in order to defend Jewish life and the Jewish state, it has been necessary for us to create a powerful army. But King David reminds us that the success of our modern-day chariots and horses – the tanks, fighter jets and missile defense systems – is completely in G-d’s hands. King David also reminds us of our destiny. He of all people knew the great necessity of a strong army, but he also knew that we cannot be defined by it. We are defined by our moral vision, which G-d gave to us at Mount Sinai. It is through this Divine mission and destiny that G-d grants us the power to rise above the normal laws of history. The future of the Jewish people – and indeed of any society – does not depend on chariots and horses alone. Throughout history, many civilizations and empires with mighty armies have come and gone; yet the Jewish people have remained throughout. Chariots and horses are of this earthly world and therefore transient; our Torah and our Divine destiny are eternal. Physical things, no matter how powerful, eventually, like the human body, turn to dust, whereas G-d, His Torah and spiritual world are immortal. In the end, those who believe in their chariots and horses “are brought to their knees and fall.” But we, who believe in G-d, His Torah, and our eternal destiny, “rise up and stand firm.” RABBI WARREN GOLDSTEIN Chief Rabbi of South Africa.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees . In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, garlic, rosemary, basil, Italian seasoning, black pepper and salt. Set aside. Wash the turkey inside and out; pat dry. Remove any large fat deposits. Loosen the skin from the breast. This is done by slowly working your fingers between the breast and the skin.
