I used to work in the store from time to time as a youngster. I would unpack boxes, replace shoes on the shelves, and assist in other ways. Certain things amazed me, even as a child. My father had a stack of blank checks. A person who came in and forgot his or her checkbook at home only had to fill in their bank name and account number, and presto!, they had a check with which to pay for their purchase. There were no computers to check whether there was an account balance, even an account. But my father trusted his customers. And his customers trusted him. Our communities were then filled with many people you could trust. The local pharmacy had the pharmacist owner in a white lab coat who knew you and your medical needs. I recall the owner of the local carpet and drape store who had likely visited in your home and personally knew your needs. I recall the local insurance agent who knew each child in each family and sent birthday cards with genuine personal messages. Fast forward to 2012. Some dealings with my insurance agent have highlighted the changes in our society which have occurred. A number of things relating to my insurance have happened in the last month which bring into question who you can trust. First, I received the renewal for my homeowner’s insurance. The evaluation of my home and the required insurance for my home was increased by $100,000 from my earlier policy. Had my home gone up in value by $100,000 in the last year or two? No, by all estimates, the price had actually gone down. Had the cost of re-constructing my house if there were a fire gone up by $100,000 during this time? No, I contacted several homeowners in my immediate area. None of the other homes’ replacement values had gone up like that. With the higher insured amount, the premium went up substantially as well. 12
Just a week after receiving the homeowners’ insurance bill, we received the new bill for our earthquake insurance through another company but through the same agent (we have been insured for our home by separate companies for general insurance and earthquake for several years). Our earthquake policy now required over a half million dollars more evaluation and insurance than just a couple of years earlier. Our homeowners’ insurance had been high, but this was outrageous as we were required to insure our home for an amount close to half a million above what we feel is its actual worth. Furthermore, the deductible is calculated as a percentage of the total insured. Our deductible now exceeded $150,000. The first $150,000 of damage would have to come out of our pocket. That is like having no insurance at all. I called our insurance agent. We have worked with this agent since 1981. I explained to him our concerns. I asked if there was another way of getting better earthquake coverage from perhaps another company. He said that no other companies were providing earthquake insurance in our area. Despite my having trusted this agent for decades, I could not accept that there were no alternatives. I called a highly rated insurance company, the same company that has provided our auto insurance since 1974. In 10 minutes, I had insurance for our home. With three new policies (for home, for earthquake, and for valuables), we would save about $700 per year, all while having better coverage. Our earthquake deductible would go from a $153,000 deductible to under $43,000. So much for the lack of availability of alternative earthquake coverage! I’m not sure whether our previous insurance agent purposely misled us or not. One thing is clear: The trusting March 9, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

I
n the 1950’s, my father owned a shoe store. It was a large shoe store with a very large back room where a huge inventory added to the shoes on display. The “Westchester Factory Outlet Shoes” store featured major brands with a wide array of styles, colors, and sizes. It was a unique store in the Westchester area of Los Angeles. What made the store very special to the area residents was that my father made a special effort to know the customers, their likes and dislikes, their sizes, and the sizes of their family members. He made a special effort to stock the odd sizes of many. I recall how our Rabbi who had a very wide, EEEEE shoe was always impressed when he came to the store for shoes as my father always made sure there was a selection in his size in a variety of top styles just for him.
relationship that was bestowed on all of the local business people in the 1950’s no longer exists. There seem to be only a few people you can fully trust today. I outlined the example of our insurance woes as just one example of how business seems to be conducted today. My father’s shoe store went out of existence in the early 1960’s. Across the street opened a branch of a large shoe store chain. While their store in Westchester was only half the size of my father’s store, they had seven other stores in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. If they lacked in the Westchester store a certain color or size, they could call another location and have the shoes delivered to the customer the very next day. My father could not compete with that. Fortunately my father had come to know representatives of the major shoe companies and began a new career as a sales representative, a career where the trust he earned through his specialized service to each store he served brought him great success. My father was able to change careers and succeed, but the community suffered the loss of a special relationship with a unique store and store owner. Think about your past. Besides your pharmacist and your local businessmen and women, the people who perhaps were most trusted in the community were our elementary school teachers. My classmates and I and my parents held out teachers in great esteem. Again, fast forward to 2012 and the headlines regarding abuse of students by their teachers: Boy, how times have changed! What can we do? How do we live in a world without trust? There are solutions. There are ways to restore trust into our lives and into our community. Pirke Avot, The Ethics of Our Fathers, advises us to get for ourselves a Haver. Haver can be translated in a number of
ways. The term can mean friend, colleague, and even mentor. When you move to a city, get a Haver, someone you can personally relate to, someone you can trust. If you have a true Haver, you will restore trust to your life as you will interact daily with someone who understands you and cares for you. Even if you find yourself in an untrustworthy environment, the call or visit with a Haver can greatly improve your day. A good Haver can restore your faith, your hope in people. Secondly, become active in your local synagogue community. Weekly attendance, if not daily attendance and participation in a steady community will help to develop meaningful relationships. What a great feeling when the Rabbi who named your children later becomes the Rabbi who officiates at your children’s weddings. Within the synagogue, there are those who sit each Shabbat in your row. There are those who invite you and who you invite to your Shabbat table. The synagogue community helps to personalize what seems to be our very impersonal world. Some synagogue-going Jews look for some kind of spice and variety in their lives. One week they go to synagogue A, next week, they walk to synagogue B. They hear of a speaker in synagogue C the next week and that becomes their destination. They daven in a minyan, but lose the personalized nature and benefits of the synagogue community. We no longer live in the “Leave It to Beaver” world of the 1950’s. But we don’t have to fear the world in which we live. As we develop special relationships and friendships, as we actively participate in our synagogue community, as we interact with our Rabbi, we build the right world for today.

NEWT GINGRICH 2012
Speaker Gingrich thanks Commissioner Winkler for organizing and co-chairing the successful event as supporters look on. Yehuda Remer Photography
Speaker Gingrich thanks Nir Weinblut, Proprietor of La Gondola Restaurant, for organizing and cochairing the successful event as the security detail looks on. Yehuda Remer Photography
Rabbis Aaron Abend, Nachman Abend and Yanky Lunger pose with Speaker Gingrich at Jewish event.
La Gondola Restaurant in Beverly Hills was filled to capacity with Newt Gingrich supporters as well as the national media to hear the former Speaker of the House give a major foreign policy address. What started out as a small luncheon for Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich turned into a hybrid major media event and successful fundraiser co-chaired by Commissioner Howard Winkler and La Gondola Restaurant owner Nir Weinblut. Gingrich was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1974 and was reelected 10 times. A co-author and architect of the "Contract with America", Gingrich was a major leader in the Republican victory in the 1994 congressional election. In 1995, Time named him "Man of the Year" "for his role in ending the four-decades-long Democratic majority in the House". While he was House speaker, the House enacted welfare reform, passed a capital gains tax cut in 1997, and in 1998 passed the first balanced budget since 1969. Since leaving the House, Gingrich has remained active in public policy debates and worked as a political consultant. He founded and chaired several policy think tanks, including American Solutions for Winning the Future and the Center for Health Transformation. He has written or co-authored 27 books.
Newt Gingrich and Los Angeles County Commissioner Howard Winkler had first met in 1988 when Winkler coordinated the Presidential Campaign of former New York Congressman and then United States HUD Secretary Jack Kemp. Speaker Gingrich, a true patriotic American and a staunch supporter of Israel's right to exist stressed the following points: 1. No Israeli Prime Minister can morally accept the risk of a second Holocaust. No Israeli Prime Minister can be asked to risk the survival of his country. If Israel decides that they have no choice then the United States must back Israel. 2. We shall have an explicit strategy of replacing the dictatorship in Iran that is threatening to destroy Israel and that harbors terrorism throughout the rest of the world. We need a national dialogue about radical Islam and the threats from radical Islamists. We have to confront the fact that it will be controversial but it needs to be said. 3. We need an American energy strategy that is designed to use all the American energy assets so that we genuinely, once again, become what we were during World War Two: The world's largest supplier of energy at relatively low cost.

We offer counseling for: Domestic Violence/Anger Management Groups
If prayer has no influence on the sick, why did the sick get sicker? Another point, those praying for the sick, to whom did they pray to? Is a Christian prayer for a nonChristian acceptable? Can a Buddhist pray for a Jew? For that matter can you pray for an atheist? Maybe people prayed for the wrong things.

Lastly, maybe G-d, the healer of all flesh, said no! G-d may have an agenda where He wants the sick to return their souls to spirit. He accepts the prayers but has other plans that we cannot fathom. In a new book “The Heart Speaks,” Dr. Mimi Guarneri describes the importance of prayer. She offers a study to prove her point: 150 patients at Duke University and Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center entered a pilot study to test the idea that spiritual influences could have a measurable impact.

The medical world recently reported that prayer has no positive effect on the sick and, if anything, prayer may cause sick people to become sicker. The $2.4 million study, by the John Templeton Foundation, smacks of bias, ignorance and downright arrogance.

The Efficacy of Healing & Prayer
Angioplasty patients were prayed for simultaneously by different religious sects around the world from Buddhists in Nepal to Carmelite nuns in Baltimore to Baptists in North Carolina. The parishioners were asked to pray for the patients who were assigned to them, according to their normal customs. The researchers utilized a monitoring technique to follow patients from pre-catheterization to post-angioplasty, tracking such items as stroke, heart attack incidence, and mortality. Those patients who were prayed for had fewer adverse

outcomes than patients in the standard therapy group. All these studies were double-blind, meaning that neither the staff nor the patients knew of their treatment. Because of this, it’s difficult for skeptics to invalidate them by stating that any observed result of prayer must be due to the subject’s expectations or the power of his or her beliefs. And then there was the early research by Dr. Franklin Loehr, a Presbyterian minister and scientist, who even documented the tangible effects of payer on microorganisms and plants. In experiments conducted on germinating seeds, Loehr used three pans of various kinds of seeds. One served as the control; another received positive prayer and another negative prayer. The results regularly showed that positive prayer helped speed the germination of seeds and produced more vigorous plants, while negative prayer halted the germination of certain plants and suppressed growth in others.” This to me is a very clear proof of the efficacy of prayer. Dating back to the Old Testament we are told of the great Jewish prophet Moses who prayed for a plague to strike the Egyptian nation and then he prayed to end the plagues. His prayers were successful and should be an example for us all. In the history of religion you see the efficacy of prayer, how prayer brings comfort, and heals the sick. No matter what the Templeton Foundation claims, prayer has been in the hearts and minds of all mankind. I believe that Dr. Viktor Frankl, the psychiatrist and founder of logotherapy, had it right. In his book “The Doctor and the Soul” he asks “Is it permissible for (a doctor) to interfere with a patient’s decisions? Does that not involve interfering in a private, personal area of the human spirit? Will not such interference lead to his thoughtlessly or arbitrarily imposing his own personal outlook on the patient?”

This problem does not arise for the minister, priest, or rabbi, whose function it is to discuss questions of belief and outlook and who is authorized to hand down guiding doctrines.” Frankl makes it very clear that the physician is to realize his limits. His role is to stick to healing the body and not comment on the soul. On the same note it has been said that when Rabbis play doctors congregations become sick. But nowhere, until now, do we have physicians speaking against prayer. True, we need to respect our medical profession and count on them for healing but remember it is in G-d we trust! • March 9, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

B
arely a week has passed since Sara Leah has entered my life. It's hard to believe how in such a short period of time my world could be so dramatically altered. It's amazing how this tiny package -- less than eight pounds of human being -- has made her presence felt throughout my day and night. Every room in our house has been transformed to accommodate her needs. The desk in the family room has become a diaper changing station. Her crib, carriage, rocking seat and other baby paraphernalia have become the dominant element in our home decor. Hour after hour is taken up with holding her, soothing her, changing her and, of course, the round-the-clock feedings.
Because She is Mine The relationship is definitely a give-and-take one. I give her my all, and she takes. She is still a few weeks shy from smiling, cooing back or even gurgling happily. Most of the time her eyes are shut tight, and hold little recognition when they do open. Basically she sleeps, eats, cries and requires constant care. But there is nothing that brings me greater contentment than clutching my baby's five perfect tiny fingers, or stroking her cottony soft cheeks, her head cradled against my shoulder. Nor am I the only one in our family to feel this way. All of my children have commented, each in his own way, how much they love "their" baby. How cute, soft, perfect "their" baby sister is -- despite the fact that she robs them of their mother's time and attention. Watching me rocking and singing to Sara Leah for the umpteenth time after a particularly taxing day and grueling night, my husband commented, "It's unbelievable what an outpouring of love a parent shows to her child. Look at what you went through because of her -- pregnancy, labor and then her non-stop crying as you tend to her with a sore and recovering body; yet you still hold her with such adoration." But this is the love and bond every parent feels towards her newborn. A love simply because she is mine, despite her lack of giving anything back. In fact, it's precisely because she can't give anything in return that the connection is so strong. As any parent, I love each of my children unconditionally. But as each of them grows and our relationship deepens, the original, pure, unconditional love is no longer as appar36
ent. That bond becomes subsumed within and sidetracked by all that my child gives back to me: the nachas, the adorable smiles and hugs, the witty comments, the affection and the friendship. The more my children grow and mature, the more I no longer only love them, but also come to like them -- as the unique and special personality that each one becomes. My newborn Sara Leah, however, with her lack of anything to give to me, exemplifies the depth of our simple connection. A pure, intrinsic love deriving wholly from the fact that she is mine. There is only one thing I can think of that's akin to this love. It is a love that mimics the deep and unconditional love between G-d and us. It's like the deep bond with G-d that the Chassidic masters spoke of: the bond elicited by the simple, spiritually "uncharismatic" individual, who unlike the spiritually developed, righteous tzaddik, gives nothing in return. Like a parent's love towards her newborn, this strong outpouring of love from G-d to all of us is not due to our merits, talents or strengths. It's not because of our spiritual stamina, positive qualities or because of any "nachas" we may give Him. It is simply and only because we are His. n what is probably the most anti-climactic event in Jewish history, the nation that was about to receive the Torah from Moshe turns away from the will of Hashem. After 40 days they begin to worry that Moshe will never return and they panic. They create a new leader for themselves -- The Golden Calf..
Masked Emotions PARSHAS KI TISA The Torah describes the scene in Exodus 32:6: "The people offered (the calf) peace offerings and they sat down to eat and drink and they got up to revel." Hashem immediately commands Moshe to descend Mount Sinai in order to admonish his corrupt nation. As Moshe comes down the mountain he hears tumultuous shouts emanating from the people who were celebrating their new found deity. His student, Yehoshua, also hears the sounds and declares (Exodus 32:17) "the sound of battle is in the camp." Moshe listens and amends the theory. He tells Yehoshua, "It is not the sound of victory, nor the sound of defeat: I hear the sound of distress." When Moshe sees the Golden Calf he breaks the Tablets and restores order, sanity, and the belief in Hashem. What is strange about the episode is the contrast of the sounds made and the sounds heard. If the Jewish People reveled and celebrated then why did Yehoshua hear sounds of war and how did Moshe hear sounds of distress? They should both have heard the sound of celebration and festivity. Rav Chaim of Sanz had a custom: he would test

the local children on a monthly basis. The children would recite orally from the Mishnah or Talmud and Rav Chaim would reward them generously with sweets and money. Once a group of secular Jews decided to dupe Rav Chaim. They taught a Talmudic selection to a gentile child and reviewed it with him until he knew it perfectly. They dressed him like a Chasidic child and had him stand in line with all the other children to be tested. The rabbi listened to the young boy intently. The other children were puzzled: they did not remember this boy from their cheder, yet they were amazed at the remarkable fluency he displayed in reciting his piece. Rav Chaim was not impressed at all. He turned to the young man and said, "please tell your father that there are better ways to earn a few coins!" With that he dismissed the child. The secularists were shocked. "How did the Rabbi know?" Their curiosity forced them to approached Rav Chaim. Rav Chaim smiled as he answered them. "There are two ways to say the Gemorah. One is filled with spirituality. The child's body is swaying and filled with the emotion of Torah. The other is just repetitive rote. This young man lacked the fire and the true joy that the Jewish children have when learning Torah. I knew he was not one of ours." The Jews got up to revel around the Golden Calf. Moshe and Yehoshua however knew the difference between true joy -- simcha -- and confusion. The Jews revel were in essence distressed but it was masked with drinks and noise makers. True joy is coupled with a certainty and a sense of direction; something lacking for those Jews celebrating the idol. The Jews may have gotten up to celebrate, but it was no celebration. It may have looked like a party to the untrained eye, but Moshe knew the true sound of joy. It did not exist with the Golden Calf. True joy is the harmony of spirituality and contentment. Superficial sounds of euphoria and celebration are heard by those with true insight as sounds of battle and distress.

VANQUISHING THE ENEMY PARSHASVAYAKHEL/PEKUDEI
W
hen the Jewish nation has troubles we need to know that it is a time for introspection. Only those without faith believe that things happen randomly. The Jewish Nation, who exists only through miracles, knows that nothing is random. There was a great sage, Reb Tzadok HaKohein, who wrote that when we have enemies from without, it is just a physical expression of the advance of the enemy from within, the inclination to go against G-d's will which we all have. This is a profound and novel idea to understand that there is something we can all do to better the stuation of Jews everywhere. The question is, what exactly should we do, and if we wish to conquer the enemy from within, where do we start? This question is really a question which every individual must ask himself, and consequently the answer will be according to the individual. Nevertheless, there is definetely a communal answer to this question as well. Let us see what we find in this week's parsha regarding this. "And Moshe assembled the entire congregation of the Children of Israel and he said to them: "these are the things which G-d commanded to do (them). Six days work should be done, and on the seventh day it should be sanctified, a restful sabbath to G-d..." (Exodus 35:1-2). Shabbos. Moshe assembled every Jew and informed them about the sanctity of the seventh day; the day G-d ceased creating. The day He shared with us to celebrate with Him. It is a day when things are different. A day when we can forget what we do and remember who we are - who we really are - in relation to G-d, and in relation to the scheme of the creation of the universe. Making Shabbos a special day is the way we actively show our belief in the Creator. We declare it with one day a week. We declare it communally! With unity! Moshe assembled the entire nation to teach us that Shabbos is a key to unity. All efforts toward building the holy Tabernacle of G-d's presence ceased before Shabbos
44
every week. Shabbos observance overrides building the Tabernacle to house G-d's presence! Shabbos is the sign between us and G-d. The Chofetz Chaim writes that as long as the "sign" is up over a place of business we know that the business is still operating, even if sometimes the store is closed. When the sign comes down, then we know that the business is closed. Our business is to be G-d's people in all aspects of our life. When the Shabbos "sign" is up, we know we're still in business. When, G-d forbid, the sign comes down, we should be concerned that our relationship with G-d is in bankruptcy, or worse. Each of us on our own level should give some thought to Shabbos. From Friday at sundown until Saturday evening when the stars are out, it is Shabbos. Let us at the very least remember that it's Shabbos. Turn to a loved one and wish them a good Shabbos. Become part of the Shabbos experience; the freedom, the holiness, and the profundity of sharing G-d's resting day. Let us begin to control the communal enemy from within by assembling in spirit on Shabbos, and then G-d will begin to vanquish the enemy from without. •
