THE KABBALISTIC SPIN ON ROSH HASHANAH By Rabbi Naftali Silberberg

O

n Rosh Hashanah, Jews worldwide flock to their synagogues and beseech the Almighty to grant them, their families, and all of Israel a peaceful, happy and prosperous year. According to Jewish tradition, on Rosh Hashanah every creation passes before the Supernal Judge. He determines who will live and who will not, who will be prosperous and healthy and who will not. Everything which will occur in the coming year is decided on Rosh Hashanah. Why is everything determined on an annual basis? Can’t an eternal and infinite G‑d plan a little further in advance? Would it not be more time and energy efficient to judge perhaps a hundred or a thousand years at once? Rosh Hashanah commemorates the sixth day of Creation, the day when G‑d formed Adam and Eve and breathed into their nostrils the breath of life. An understanding of the dynamic of creation will explain the significance of Rosh Hashanah. 10

Certain things are taken for granted. For example, when we turn on a sink faucet, we expect and assume that water will emerge from the tap. Or, a child in most households who opens the refrigerator expects to find food on its shelves. In truth, however, neither the water nor the food appear on their own. There is a well-staffed company which maintains the water pipes and pumps necessary to draw water from the reservoir into the residential home, and parents invest incredible energy to stock the refrigerator. The same is true with creation. It seems that the world stands on its own. We assume that that which existed a moment ago will continue existing a moment later. But, in fact, the Creator is perpetually maintaining the cosmos. In the absence of the steady flow of divine energy, all would cease to exist, much as the water in the tap would stop flowing if the water company went under. And every once in a while, or once a year to be more precise, G‑d loses interest in His creation pastime. We were September 7, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

created because G‑d desired to be a beneficent king, and consequently we, His subjects, came into being: creatures upon whom G‑d could heap His otherwise unused infinite capacity for kindness. But at the onset of every year’s Rosh Hashanah, G‑d loses interest, as it were, in His finite and flawed subjects. He withdraws, becomes introverted, and we need to provide Him with an incentive to continue creating for one more year. This isn’t because He has a short attention span and habitually loses interest in projects before they reach completion. Rather, this phenomenon is part and parcel of the master plan. When G‑d originally created this world, there was nothing which elicited that grand gesture. There was no one around yet to elicit anything; it was an act of pure kindness. But ultimately, “pure kindness” isn’t so kind after all. It leaves its beneficiary feeling unworthy of undeserved beneficence. That’s why G‑d created a world wherein everything, even our existence itself, is rightfully earned. If the world will remain in existence for another year, it will be because we stimulated G‑d’s desire to continue on course.

Thus, on Rosh Hashanah, the anniversary of our creation, it is up to us to ensure that everything continues. We go to the synagogue and proclaim, “Reign over the entire world in Your glory.” We “remind” G‑d of His love for His chosen people, reaccept Him as our absolute King, and express our innermost desire to serve Him for yet another year. We “remind” Him of the enthusiasm He originally had when creating the world almost 6,000 years ago. And when words fail us, due their inherent inability to communicate the deepest heartfelt feelings, we take a shofar, a medium whose simple weeping notes convey the wordless cry and request which emanates from the core of our souls—“Father, King, we need You and love You, and we know that the feelings are mutual!” This Rosh Hashanah, as we congregate in the synagogues, let us bear in mind that what hangs in the balance in the coming year is more than our personal welfare. All of creation is counting on us. Let us wholeheartedly commit ourselves to G‑d, and He will surely reciprocate by committing to grant all of us a beautiful and meaningful year.

O

ne year, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov said to Rabbi Ze’ev Kitzes, one of his senior disciples: “You will blow the shofar for us this Rosh Hashanah. I want you to study all the kavanot (Kabbalistic meditations) that pertain to the shofar, so that you should meditate upon them when you do the blowing.” Rabbi Ze’ev applied himself to the task with joy and trepidation: joy over the great privilege that had been accorded him, and trepidation over the immensity of the responsibility. He studied the Kabbalistic writings that discuss the multifaceted significance of the shofar and what its sounds achieve on the various levels of reality and in the various chambers of the soul. He also prepared a sheet of paper on which he noted the main points of each kavanah, so that he could refer to them when he blew the shofar.

the paper had disappeared! He distinctly remembered placing it there that morning, but now it was gone. Furiously, he searched his memory for what he had learned, but his distress over the lost notes seemed to have incapacitated his brain: his mind was a total blank. Tears of frustration filled his eyes. He had disappointed his master, who had entrusted him with this most sacred task. Now he must blow the shofar like a simple horn, without any kavanot. With a despairing heart, Rabbi Ze’ev blew the litany of sounds required by law The and, avoiding his Mas By R abb t master’s eye, reer K i Sh lom e o Yo y sumed his place. s

Finally, the great moment arrived. It was the morning of Rosh Hashanah, and Rabbi Ze’ev stood on the reading platform in the center of the Baal Shem Tov’s synagogue amidst the Torah scrolls, surrounded by a sea of tallit-draped bodies. At his table in the southeast corner of the room stood his master, the Baal Shem Tov, his face aflame. An awed silence filled the room in anticipation of the climax of the day—the piercing blasts and sobs of the shofar. Rabbi Ze’ev reached into his pocket, and his heart froze:

ef Z evin

At the conclusion of the day’s prayers, the Baal Shem Tov made his way to the corner where Rabbi Ze’ev sat sobbing under his tallit. “Gut Yom Tov, Reb Ze’ev!” he called. “That was a most extraordinary shofar-blowing we heard today!” “But Rebbe . . . I . . .” “In the king’s palace,” said the Baal Shem Tov, “there are many gates and doors, leading to many halls and chambers. The palace-keepers have great rings holding many keys, each of which opens a different door. But there is one key that fits all the locks, a master key that opens all the doors. “The kavanot are keys, each unlocking another door in our souls, each accessing another chamber in the supernal worlds. But there is one key that unlocks all doors, that opens up for us the innermost chambers of the divine palace. That master key is a broken heart.”

celerated wound healing. In rabbits with cutaneous wounds, honey was found to decrease edema, decrease inflammation, reduce necrosis, improve epithelialization, and improve wound contraction when the wound tissue was examined histologically. In mice, the use of honey also demonstrated accelerated wound healing on cutaneous wounds at the histological level. Clinical observations from human trials reported that honey-debrided wounds facilitated formation of granulating tissue, improved epithelialization, and reduced inflammation. This was consistent with what was reported in the animal study data previously discussed; however, clinical observation without the support of histological evidence is limited. Studies showing honey helps children with nighttime coughs

Health benefits of Honey By Sara Chana, IBCLC, RH (AHG)

Hashem wants us to use honey this time of year. It’s so tasty to eat an apply dipped in honey, but did you know that honey besides being delicious has many medicinal properties. Honey can heal cuts and scrapes even better than antibiotic creams If you cut or scrape yourself, reach for honey instead of your antibiotic cream and you pay be pleasantly surprised. When applied to a wound, honey slowly releases hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic compound produced from an enzyme, disinfecting the wound, killing the germs and healing the broken skin. Scientific evidence has shown that most strains of harmful bacteria cannot survive in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Also, honey’s viscosity provides a protective barrier and forms a moist environment for the wound. It creates a healing layer between wound and dressing with no sticking and no tissue damage, reducing the chance of scarring as the skin cells grow without forming any scab. Honey supplies nutrients necessary for healthy tissue regeneration and stimulates the growth of new blood capillaries. The antibacterial properties also provide a barrier to cross-infection of wounds. Honey’s high sugar content has an osmosis effect on wounds. It draws lymph out to the cells while absorbing moisture and provides an anti-inflammatory action which reduces swelling and pain. Animal studies have demonstrated some profound findings with honey. Clinical studies have shown that honey ac28

Honey is also suggested for a night-time cough. Giving yourself or child honey a few times throughout the day and especially before bed can help sooth a night-time cough. (Honey should never been administered to a child under one year of age). A tasty idea is to heat up organic honey on the stove add some elderberry syrup mix well, chill and store in the refrigerator. Studies have shown that honey is a potent treatment for nighttime cough. In one study of 130 children aged 2-17 with runny nose and cough were randomized to receive nightly doses of buckwheat honey, artificial honey-flavored cough medicine (dextromethorphan), or no treatment. On a parent-rated symptom scale, honey was found to be the most helpful in reducing nighttime cough and improving sleep in children with upper respiratory infections. Another randomized study of 139 children aged 2-5 years old with upper respiratory infection were divided into 4 treatment groups: honey, dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine (eg, Benadryl), or no treatment. Standard care, such as acetaminophen and nose drops, was also given to all children as needed. While improvement was seen in all of the groups, children receiving honey had the fewest episodes of nighttime cough and slept better compared to children in the other groups. Honey used for acne For centuries, people have been using honey mask for acne and for curing other marks, scars, spots etc. The honey masks are very popular and very effective. It can be made with different combinations of herbs and other substances. Below is a special Rosh Hashana facial mask Ingredients: One medium sized apple (preferably organic apple), four to five tablespoons of honey (preferably organic honey) and lukewarm water (to wash face). To preparation: Scoop out the seeds of the apple and run the rest in a mixer to make a fine pulp. Now add three to September 7, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

four (depends on the size of the apple and how many persons it will serve. The quantity of honey should be sufficient to mix well with the pulp) tablespoons of honey into it. Mix well into a uniform paste. Your apple honey mask for acne is ready to apply.

can also help with digestive disorders as well. Honey seems to help food to break down and coats the small and large intestine, which means that digested food moves through quicker and easier.

How to use: Apply a layer of this apple honey mask on your whole face. Wait for ten to fifteen minutes and let the mask dry up a bit. When done, wash the mask off with lukewarm water. That’s it. You are done!

Manuka honey in particular, has shown to help with acid reflux. The antimicrobial action of honey is finally being proven in clinical studies and manuka honey seems to be one of the stars. What is so unique about manuka honey for alleviating acid reflux? It is interesting to learn, that manuka honey is collected by bees which exclusively feed on the manuka flowers, and it contains a higher percentage of methylglyoxal (MGO) than other honey types. The methylglyoxal along with other components are responsible for imparting the antibacterial property to it. In addition to the strong antibacterial action, manuka honey acts as an anti-inflammatory and healing agent. If you suffer with acid reflux it is worth giving manuka honey a try.

Insight: The apple honey mask works best when fresh and is very easy to prepare, make it just before you apply. Facts: The grains of apple work as a sort of gentle scrub for cleaning your face, but it’s the glycolic acid in the apple that facilitates exfoliation. Together they clean up the skin pores. Also, since honey in it is a natural antioxidant and has anti-microbial properties. This eliminates the microbial infections that cause acne. Patch test before applying to you entire face: Test if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the mask by applying it on a small patch in your wrist and wait for a few hours. If rashes appear or you show other symptoms of allergy, do not use this mask on your face. Honey and acid reflux Many people are finding relief with reflux with the use of honey. Honey is very thick and has a tendency to coat the stomach and digestive system. Not only will it quell acid flare-ups it

G-d in the Fast Lane Parshas Ki Savo By Yossy Goldman

C

an one plan to be blessed? Obviously, we believe that when we live life as G-d intended us to, we will find or lives blessed in many ways. Even if we do not always see the results tangibly or immediately, we certainly are aware of many blessings that come with the territory of leading a G-dly life. But there is a verse in our Parshah, which promises us blessings we never even dreamed of. If you will listen to the voice of G-d... and observe the commandments... All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you... (Deuteronomy 28:2) What does it mean that blessings will overtake you? Rabbi Ovadia Sforno, one of the classic Biblical commentators, suggests that it means you will be blessed even when you made no effort to seek those blessings. It will come out of the blue, an unexpected windfall. The story is told of the saintly Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev that he once saw a young man running down the street. The Chassidic master stopped him and asked, "Where are you running?" The fellow answered, "To make a living, rabbi." To which the Berditchever responded, "So how do you know that your living lies in that direction and you're running after it? Perhaps your livelihood is to be found in the opposite direction, and you're running away from it?" Do we ever know for sure? How often do the best laid plans of mice and men come to naught? Haven't we all had the experience of trying our hardest to do a deal, and yet with all the planning and strategizing nothing whatsoever

44

materialized? And on the other hand, there may have been times when we put no work into it at all and suddenly from nowhere we landed the deal of the year? The truth is we don't know where the blessing of our livelihood lies. And so it is with spiritual blessings. There are times when we make the effort and remain uninspired and there are times when we become inspired effortlessly. According to the Baal Shem Tov, our unconscious soul may hear something on a higher plane and it filters down to our conscious soul and we are touched, moved or inspired. We live in an era of much confusion. Many are lost, floundering about in spiritual wildernesses. But many are finding themselves too. There have been many who didn't necessarily go looking for G-d but G-d found them. "How did you get inspired?" "To tell you the truth, I'm not really sure. I was minding my own business and I bumped into this Rabbi." Or, "I was sitting next to this fellow on the plane..." Or, "I was just a tourist at the Western Wall but something moved me." Everybody has a story. In some stories we went looking for G-d, in others He came looking for us. So if you feel the spirit overtaking you, don't speed up. Slow down. Let it catch up with you. May the blessings of G-d overtake you and transform your life Rabbi Goldman is Senior Rabbi of the Sydenham Highlands North Shul since 1986, president of the South African Rabbinical Association September 7, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info

Finding New Ways To Help Each Other In A Rough Economy. It’s a typical weekday morning and Jonah Light Jonah Light, a local corporate and event photographer has just finished davening Shacharis at Aish Hatorah, in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles. Jonah stays behind for a couple minutes to schmooze with some of his friends and invite them to the JBNLA breakfast next door - a monthly business networking event that happens twice a month. He mentions something to the featured speaker of the month, Saul Blinkoff about his upcoming lecture to the members of JBNLA, and then heads next door to Morry's Fireplace to join the rest of the JBNLA attendees. This is what a typical JBNLA morning looks like for members of the organization. A lot of the members of JBNLA knew each other before joining the organization. It’s these close relationships that have helped JBNLA continue to grow since its inception. The history of JBNLA dates back 4 years ago, to the creation of the Frum Business Network (FBN), by Jonah Light, in Los Angeles CA. Jonah was previously involved with a number of different networking groups around the city before realizing the need for a new networking organization. “I was surprised to see that there weren't any Jewish networking

groups in my area that offered its guests kosher food or proper structure, so I decided to create my own” says Jonah Light. “While my initial intention was to better connect the observant population, business-wise, the reality was that about 50% of the people that were coming were not observant Jews,

nor did they have any desire to be”. “At that time a friend of mine David Littauer put me back in touch with an old friend of mine, Josh Dill, of Passaic, NJ, who had started a similar group called the Jewish Business Network (JBN), which had a great website and had already hosted close to 20 meetings for its East Coast members. I decided that taking Josh’s concept and using it to create a better organization, was the next step for our budding organization”.

That’s how JBNLA got its name and to this day, JBNLA connects its members with the East Coast JBN, in an effort to build the organization and create new and exciting opportunities to its members throughout the country. The goal of JBNLA is to create a better physical & virtual space for effective cross-pollination of Jews & Jewish-run businesses throughout Los Angeles and, ultimately, across the nation. JBNLA hosts a breakfast networking event every 3rd Wednesday of the month at Morry's Fireplace (Just West of the intersection of Pico and Doheny) from 8-9:30 a.m. and also hosts an event every 2nd Monday night of the month from 8-10 p.m. There is also an exclusive monthly gathering for Jewish attorneys, and a quarterly meeting held in Valley Village for the Valley constituents . The cost for non-members to attend individual events is: $15.00 for presale purchases or $20.00 at the door. In addition, JBNLA in conjunction with JBN, offers a premium membership for $120 a year, which enables members to attend as many JBNLA and JBN meetings as they wish, nation-wide, for no additional cost. At each JBNLA meeting, there is a nice selection of kosher food and at least 30 minutes of unstructured “schmooze time” prior to a short “Dvar Torah” on business and Yid-

dishkeit, member introductions, and then the featured speaker (attorney, Adam Gauthier will be the featured speaker this coming October and will be presenting on valuable tips on public speaking). The Presentation topics vary, but always share a focus on giving practical and motivational tips for business owners and employees to enhance their business or clientele. of the networking aspect of the event is achieved each meeting, through referral slips, which each attendee is encouraged to fill out, and serves to help members effectively give referrals to one other. Ever since we introduced the referral slip system, we have been able to track who is being matched up and if the referrals are followed up. We've had a lot of success stories of people making business connections, increasing their bottom line, and even one marriage, all thanks to JBNLA. “With today's challenging and competitive workplace and economy, we need to work together to boost each other's livelihood” Jonah remarks. In the future, Jonah hopes to see new subgroups or offshoots of JBNLA spring up independently throughout the West Coast. To learn more about JBNLA’s programs and services, please visit JBNLA.com and fill out your business profile. It’s free to post. You can also sign up for email notifications or access the calendar of upcoming events from the Web site. If you’re interested in becoming a featured speaker at a future JBNLA event, or are interested in sponsorship opportunities and would like to get more involved with JBNLA, please call Jonah Light at (310) 556-7759 or send an email to jonah@lightbeamstudio.com.
