BEANS AND BIRTHRIGHTS By Rabbi Yossy Goldman
In this week's parshah we read of the birth of twins to Isaac and Rebecca. Jacob and Esau are very different from the moment they leave the womb. As they grow older, their disparate personality traits become increasingly obvious. Jacob is the "dweller of tents," a diligent Torah scholar, while Esau is a "skilled hunter" and a man of violence. We also read how one day, when Esau returns from the hunt, exhausted and starving, he finds Jacob cooking a pot of lentils. Esau wants the beans; Jacob offers to give him the pottage in return for Esau's birthright. As the first-born twin, Esau would have been the one chosen to minister in G-d's temple. Esau accepts the offer and the deal is done. Fast-forward some 275 years. We're in the Book of Exodus now (4:22), and G-d is sending Moses to Pharaoh to redeem His people. He describes them as b'ni bechori yisrael -- "My son, My first born, Israel." Rashi, quoting the Midrash, comments: "Here the Holy One Blessed is He affixed His seal to the sale of the birthright which Jacob purchased from Esau." Here? It took G d so long to put His stamp of approval on 12
a deal that was entered into hundreds of years earlier? Why only now? The late Israeli Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi M.Z. Neriyah, offered this explanation: You can sell your birthright for beans, but you can't buy a birthright for beans. To throw away one's holy heritage is easy, but to claim it takes years of effort and much hard work. He used the analogy of a war hero who earned a row of medals for bravery and courage under fire. Sadly, in his old age he was forced to sell his medals in order to survive. So someone else walks into the pawnbroker's and finds these war medals for sale, buys them and pins them to his chest. He might walk down the street, proud as a peacock. But does it have any meaning? We all know that this man is no hero. In fact, he is nothing more than a pathetic fool! To wear the badge of "My firstborn Israel," the Jewish people had to be worthy of the honor. It wasn't enough that their father Jacob had purchased the birthright from an unworthy but willing seller. The children of Jacob needed to demonNovember 16, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info
s”xc strate that they understood what it meant to be Children of Israel. When Jacob bought the birthright from Esau it was a legal deal. One wanted the beans, the other wanted the birthright. Fair and square. But did Jacob earn that hallowed title, or was he like the fellow who bought the war medals? Generations later, when his children had gone through the "smelting pit" of the Egyptian bondage and still, with amazing faith and tenacity, kept their heritage -- then they were deemed worthy of the honor of the birthright. Now, after the trial by fire, after the blood, sweat and tears of slavery, the great Notary on High, the heavenly Commissioner of Oaths, takes out that ancient document, the yellowed deed of sale that had been waiting for generations, and puts His official stamp and the wax seal on that document, and says, "Now now you are worthy of the birthright. Today you are My Son, My Firstborn, Israel." There's a famous graffiti exchange that has much truth in it. Someone not too partial to our people had scrawled, "How odd of G-d, to choose the Jews." And one of our own responded, "Actually, the Jews chose G-d."
Being Jewish is indeed the birthright of every Jew. But it's not enough that G-d chose us, we must choose G-d. We need to earn our birthright by living as Jews. Chosenness is not license to snicker or condescend to others. It is far more responsibility than privilege. It's not good enough that our parents and grandparents were good Jews, that my Zayde was a rabbi or a schochet and my Bobba made the world's best blintzes. What are we doing to earn our stripes? Indeed, you can sell your birthright for beans. But you can't buy a birthright for beans. Rabbi Yossy Goldman was born in Brooklyn, New York. In 1976 he was sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, of righteous memory, as a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary to serve the Jewish community of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is Senior Rabbi of the Sydenham Shul since 1986, president of the South African Rabbinical Association, and a frequent contributor to Chabad.org. His book ‘From Where I Stand’ - Life Messages from the Weekly Torah Reading was recently published by KTAV and is available at Jewish book shops or online www.ktav.vom

In order to take full advantage of this remarkable weekend we are providing parents attending the seminar a separate Chanukah children’s program which will be offered parallel to the seminar lectures schedule. The children’s program will be divided into four age groups and held on a separate floor. Each class will have a teacher and assistants who will provide your kids with a spectacular holiday experience: A magician, clowns, yummy Sufganiut and lots more. This weekend will be catered by our renowned “Morris Catering” chef who will delight you with a vast array of delicious meals with the children enjoying a complete kids menu. Snack stations loaded with coffee, tea and scrumptious cakes will be available for the seminar participants. If you participated in one of our fabulous weekends in the past you already know that it is a remarkable experience that you should not forego. “We felt like we were transported to heaven and back” said Shmuel Naftali at the end of our seminar “We were lifted to another dimension” “It felt like a family event” exclaimed another seminar goer and added “This seminar entered my heart and touched every nerve. I highly recommend it. Hidabroot is a very special organization. I finally understand my mother. She is an avid fan of Rabbi Zamir Cohen and she is the one who pushed me to attend this seminar. I finally realized what she was raving about. This Rabbi is phenomenal; words cannot begin to describe his lectures”. Israel Gad who participated in the last seminar shared his deep intimate feelings “It was like a dream. It was my second time attending a seminar and I was still utterly moved by it. I told Rabbi Zamir that he is getting under my skin nourishing my soul. I used to have such hatred to religion…Thirty five years I was really anti. I was a successful business man until all turned sour and I lost a lot of money. I was contemplating suicide. A friend persuaded me to listen to Rabbi Zamir Cohen’s tapes. For two weeks they were left untouched in my car. One day I decided to put one in my car’s player and listened, I was mesmerized. For four and half hours I November 16, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info
just sat there motionless and listened, even when I arrived at my destination I could not leave my car and I ended up staying in the parking lot. Sitting and listening. I thought to myself why commit suicide? Maybe the answer to my life’s problems is right here? I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is sad that many do not understand the amazing work you are doing” concluded Gad with his voice full of emotion. “We usually hold these seminars on American Holidays” said Erez Mimon the seminar’s organizer – head of “Los Angeles Hidabroot”. “This year we decided to change and hold it during Chanukah with the goal of bringing unity to the Jewish community in Los Angeles and inviting everyone to a splendid Jewish vacation – Ten lectures, Seven Banquet meals, five star accommodations in a luxurious hotel, listening to two phenomenal rabbis in one life changing event” This seminar sounds like quite a logistical challenge. What is required to make it happen? “Wow… I don’t know where to begin describing the complexity of it.. from finding the hotel that fits our needs, the issue of electricity on Shabbat, supplying wash basins for Netilat Yadayim, finding rooms with no sensors, to designing a satisfying menu. We also have to create a thought provoking seminar addressing diverse audience in addition to creating a kids program that entertains all ages. We also employ an organized telemarketing network that accommodates all seminar participants. The Banquet hall gets decorated lavishly almost like it is a wedding. We buy elegant table and chair covers, we install special lighting and bring in a complete synagogue – Shtender, Torah scrolls, Chazzan etc. Sounds like a huge undertaking. What motivates you to do it? “Our goal is to provide a positive experience to the Jews living here” said Erez “We work very hard for many days and nights to insure it will run flawlessly. We drive to bring unity to Jews coming from different parts of our community providing all of them with a relaxing tranquil relief from their daily stressful routine. This seminar allows them to dive deeper into Judaism warm embrace. Seminar participants are limited to 500 people only –First come first serve. Parshas Vayeitzei
Asleep on Hallowed Ground Rabbi Naftali Reich
I
22
f the image of Jacob’s ladder was not the most spectacular prophetic vision ever, it certainly comes close. In his dream, Jacob saw a ladder planted firmly on the ground yet reaching all the way into the heavens, and as he watched in utter fascination, he saw angels ascending and descending the ladder.
Our Sages tell us that he was mortified that he had actually slept in such a holy place. But even this does not fully answer the question. After all, what is so terrible about sleeping on hallowed ground? And if it was really such a terrible transgression, why did the Almighty reward him with this prophetic dream?
Then he wakes up, and lo and behold, it was all a dream. Jacob is shaken, and he reacts rather strangely. How can it be, he laments, that I am in the presence of the Almighty and did not even know it? No expressions of transcendent joy. No ecstatic expansion of the mind as a result of his sublime prophecy. Just chagrin. Why?
The commentators explain that Jacob was disappointed because he had missed an extraordinary opportunity. Had he known that he stood on hallowed ground, had he known he was actually standing in the presence of the Almighty, he would have concentrated on having an even more intense prophetic encounter with Him. But he had been completely oblivious to his surroundings. Indeed, he had gone to sleep! November 16, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • info@communitylinks.info
He could have risen to incredible spiritual levels. He could have attained the most profound prophetic insights. He could have penetrated the deepest secrets of the universe. But he went to sleep. He did have a phenomenal prophetic vision in his dream, but that was where it stopped. So much potential unfulfilled. Such a great opportunity lost. It is little wonder that Jacob awoke disappointed. A young man came to study in the academy of a great sage. He listened to the sage expound his thoughts and was amazed at their profound wisdom. He bent over the revered texts and pored over every single words in awe. A feeling of humility swept through his soul. “Oh, what a nothing I am,” he muttered under his breath. “What a miserable ignorant nothing.” The sage overheard his words and called him closer. “Young man,” he said, “why do you consider yourself a nothing?” “Because I am weak, a salve to my physical needs and desires.” “I see. And why did you come here?” “To learn from you.” “If you wish to stay here and be successful,” said the sage, “then you cannot consider yourself a nothing. After all, if you are truly nothing, how can you possibly retain wisdom? No, my young friend. Humility is a very good trait, but know your own worth. Know the sublimity of your soul and give it what it deserves.” In our own lives, we sometimes fall asleep on hallowed ground. Driven down by the pressures of everyday life, we can easily fall into the trap of deprecating our own worth. We consider our shortcomings and our failures, and we tell ourselves we have no business setting our sights very high. But this is a serious mistake. Never sell yourself short. You are hallowed ground. You possess a holy soul that is a spark of the divine. You are endowed with incredible spiritual treasures and resources. You have a kind nature and a generous spirit. Most important of all, you are a descendant of the patriarchs, a custodian of the holy Torah here on this world. Your potential is incalculable. You have it within your grasp to reach for the sublime. Don’t fall asleep on the job. Don’t wake up disappointed after it is too late. Open your eyes and experience the exhilaration of fulfillment.

SPORTS PROGRAM OFFERED FOR JEWISH SPECIAL NEEDS ATHLETES
On Sunday, December 2nd, 1:15 PM at the JCC on 5870 West Olympic Blvd. in Los Angeles, organizer Jeff Liss, his coaches and Jewish Men and Women ages 10-60, will begin the 7th year of their Special Macabees Basketball Program. It all began when Jeff and his wife Liz saw a group of developmentally challenged boys wearing kippot at the Third Street Promenade. It gave Jeff an idea. Liss, a coach with the Westside Special Olympics, has trained and worked with mentally and physically challenged children for almost twenty years. When he stopped to talk with these Orthodox boys, he thought‌why not a Special Olympics-type program for Jewish Children and Adults. So it was stated and so it began. Athletes ranging in age from 10-60 and their disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, seizures and other mentally and physically challenging disabilities, both Male and Female, have been meeting at the JCC for the past 6 years. Each Sunday’s practice is divided into two sessions‌one hour of skill development, followed by a half hour of practice games where the athletes begin to hone their skills in an actual basketball game. During the skill development session, athletes are divided into small groups based on their level of ability. Each group has a volunteer coach, assigned by Liss, to focus on learning and practicing the various basketball skills‌.passing, catching, dribbling, shooting and playing defense. As Liss
stated,â€? everything is about the athlete, his or her development and having fun.â€? The 12-14 week season culminates in a “Finaleâ€?, a game between athletes from the Special Olympics playing against the Special Macabees Athletes. Parents, family and friends of all the athletes are invited to the game and last year’s game attracted over 200 in attendance. For most of the parents, it was the first time they ever saw their son or daughter, in full uniform, playing in an organized “real Basketball gameâ€?. The thrill of seeing their child/adult shoot and score brought tears and twinkles to many an eye that afternoon. And as Jeff Liss and his coaching staff stated‌â€?it was the most rewarding feeling we’ve ever had.â€? Rob Green, one of the coaches stated after the game, “I have seen such improvement and growth from one season to another. Their growth in self esteem and feeling of self worth, as a result of this program, is amazing. They feel part of a group a team, a feeling of being wanted and needed.â€? One of our female athletes mentioned how‌â€?I like being treated with respect and how I have learned to dribble properly and now have the skills I need to play basketball‌I am so happy to be a part of this program.â€? The mother of one of our male athletes, recently said, “my son looks forward to going on Sundays and being a part of the Special Macabees. He doesn’t feel he’s being treated differently because of his special needsâ€?. Now entering its 7th year, Jeff and his staff of dedicated coaches, Rob Green, Jay Davies, Yossie Bock and others, will be meeting and greeting old and new participants at the JCC on Sunday, December 2nd, from 1:15 – 2:30 PM. To sign up for this year’s Special Macabees program or for further information on how to get involved contact Jay Davies, at 818-414-5857 or email specialmacabees@hotmail.com Written by Morris Liss
