Q

RABBI MOSS

I love Pesach. I hate Pesach cleaning. We spend two weeks working like a slave so we can spend one week celebrating freedom from slavery. Am I missing something? Is there meaning in the cleaning?

A

My wife finds a new spiritual lesson from the Pesach cleaning every year. Here is her latest insight. Do you know which parts of the house are the hardest to clean? Which areas accumulate the most junk? You would think it’s the busy areas, the rooms that get the most traffic and the sections that get the most use. But it’s not the case. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The messiest parts of the house are those you don’t live in. A spare room, an unused cupboard, a neglected garage, these are the most cluttered, dusty and disorganized corners of the house. The more deserted and empty an area is, the more mess it will accumulate. If you don’t fill a room with useful things, it will become the dumping ground for those tchachkes that belong nowhere. Empty space does not remain empty for long. It gathers dust, and much more. 10

April, 2014 •

323-965-1544 •

Your life works in exactly the same way. The enemy of virtue is emptiness. A mind that is left idle is fertile ground for needless worries and fears. It is when we have nothing to think about that we start feeling down and sorry for ourselves. The most dangerous people are bored people. When you have nothing better to do, you get up to no good. On the other hand, when we are busy, we are less likely to get up to the wrong thing. As one great Chassidic master said,“I don’t expect my disciples not to sin because they are too righteous to sin, I expect them not to sin because they are too busy.” So as you clean out the house for Pesach, ponder those messy corners of nothingness, and marvel at how emptiness can be so full of junk. Let it inspire you to fill your mind with wisdom, and your schedule with goodness. Want to find some meaning in life? Mind your own busy-ness.

Yes. The Toddler

Cart-Surfing in the Grocery Store is my Son. SARA WELL

H

e is standing in the middle of the cart in a sideways snowboarding stance. He knows exactly how to shift his weight on his knees to give him enough momentum to pick up speed as the cart rolls down the cereal aisle. He has both hands stretched out in opposite directions. To the untrained eye, it’s just to give him more balance. But I know he’s hoping to knock as much product off the shelf as possible. At 3 years old his arms are not long enough to reach. I should stop him. But this day has been a solid marathon of trying to keep Ari safe, and the tired is clouding my decision-making skills. This is honestly the safest thing he has done all day. The cart is now headed toward the end of the aisle. Sigh. I have to stop him. There could be people walking across the end of the aisle who don’t see Ari surfing toward them. I’m running to catch the cart. I would call for Ari to stop, but I know he doesn’t know how. Planning ahead is not his thing. He’s inches away from the cake displays. In a quick second I realize that if I grab the cart and stop it abruptly he can get a whiplash injury, or lose his balance and fall out of the cart. My trauma training takes over and in a quick moment my left hand grabs the cart as my right hand grabs for the back of Ari’s head and

16

neck in a mock C-spine hold. No whiplash. I look around for angry breathless security and store personnel ready to give me super helpful lessons about how dangerous it is to let my kid stand up in a cart. No one comes. Either whoever watches the security cameras is sleeping or they are too busy uploading the footage to the internet with some sort of “mommy fail” tag, or “toddler grocery surfing”. Ugh. So now I’m in that super awkward dilemma lots of parents find themselves in when their child narrowly averts crisis. Hug them because you’re so glad they did not get hurt, or berate them for putting themselves in that circumstance to begin with? Deep breath. I’ll hug him later. This is a teaching moment. Gameface. Narrow my Eyes. Serious voice. But Ari beats me to it. “I didn’t hurt me! I didn’t! People didn’t get hurt! I didn’t bump my head and go to the hospital for shots! I wanna see monsters now.” The good news is that he remembers all the previous speeches. He was listening when I told him people can get hurt and that he could get hurt. I need to come up with new material. I get the sense that trying to convince him that someone could have gotten hurt is a little too abstract. I go for cliché. “Mommy said NO. Mommy said NO standing in a

info@thejewishlink.com

cart. Ari has to sit in time out when we get home. And now I’m not taking you to see the monsters.” (Monsters are the live crabs and lobsters in the tank by the seafood section.) That works. Ari’s happy face is now a grumpy face. For a second. Then he brightens up and says, “Let’s have salad!”. Salad! Now I brighten up! My kid is making healthy food choices! Until I remember that he likes to throw the tomatoes in the produce section. Not this time. I grab a ready pack and bee line for the pharmacy counter. I pass the freezer section and grab frozen whatever. It’s the first thing available within reach with a reliable hechsher, and that’s what dinner is tonight. Gluten free pizza crust. Frozen peas. Ready pack. I pass the sorbet. Dessert. Disjointed dinner? Today my family will have to be a little forgiving. I grab a massively over priced toy car for Ari so that I have a few moments to talk to the pharmacist while he explains Ari’s triple course of antibiotics, all of which have varied dosing instructions. Apparently, the cat that Ari quietly tried to drag into the car for show-and-tell while I buckled the baby into her car-seat was a stray. So it isn’t even 9am and we’re picking up three different types of antibiotics. Ari won’t take any medication in a liquid form though. He will only take pills. Pediatric doses of antibiotics don’t come in pill form. The pharmacist is trying to figure out how to condense the liquid into capsules. Bless him. I look down at Ari while I’m waiting on line. He’s not in the cart. Panic. I turn around to find him negotiating hard with the elderly woman behind us in the motorized wheelchair scooter, “It’s really really my turn. You had it the whole time!”. I apologize and tell Ari that the lady needs her chair because she can’t walk. That seems to work, because he’s doing forward rolls and cartwheels in front of the pharmacy counter now. Someone tells him the floor is dirty. I’m guessing one of the three antibiotics I’m filling now will cover whatever infection he picks up from the floor. Not worried. Time to pay. This is the scariest part of my trip. Whoever lined the super narrow check out lines with gum, licorice and chocolate clearly hates moms of toddlers. So we self check out to avoid that disaster. Ari loves scanning products. In the moments that it takes me to slide my credit card through the reader, Ari is out the front door of the grocery store and actively trying to untie someone’s

dog from the post. Really?! So I risk a second viral video upload as I become the crazy mom yelling and running out of the grocery store. The last thing I need right now is to lose someone’s dog. Or have Ari risk another animal bite. I don’t have the energy for proper parenting right now, and all I can think about is getting home. We’re about to cross the parking lot. Ari sits on the floor. He points to himself. “I can’t walk. I need a wheelchair.” “Ari. No dessert if you don’t walk to the car.” He walks. I sit down in my minivan thirty minutes from the time I first pulled in. I look at Ari in my rearview mirror. He’s buckled into the car in his five point safety car-seat. He is coloring on the leather seat next to him with a pen he must have found on the floor of the grocery store. He sees me. He gives me the pen. No words exchanged. For a brief moment I entertain the idea that maybe I could just drive him around until bedtime. But bedtime isn’t for another nine hours, so we head home. I’m usually really careful to plan my grocery-store trips for when the one baby sitter who will watch him (while he is awake) can come over. So on behalf of all the moms of the many Ari’s out there: if you see us in the grocery store and our child is cart-surfing, throwing tomatoes, doing cartwheels on the dirty floor, or trying to untie a dog from the front of the store, please understand that it’s not that we don’t care, have no safety awareness, or sense of propriety. It’s just that these hair-raising moments are our normal, and we have to pick our battles. What is horrifying to you, may actually be one of our child’s safer moments of the day. If you really want to get involved, engage the child for a minute. Show him a picture of your grandchild. Talk to him about cars…or turtles. That will give the mom enough time to pick out dinner food that is a little more normal. Or pay for groceries. Or pick up medication for the child’s stray cat bite. Alternatively, you can just watch. But please don’t post it to the internet.

“What is horrifying to you, may actually be one of our child’s safer moments of the day.”

Bibi at the Matzah Bakery Israeli Prime Minister Bakes Matzah for First Time BY ANAV SILVERMAN, TAZPIT NEWS AGENCY.

I

sraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the time to bake some Passover matzah today for his first time when he visited a matzah bakery in Kfar Chabad ahead of the upcoming Passover holiday on Tuesday, April 1. Local Chabad leaders and rabbis briefed Prime Minister Netanyahu on the preparations to hold Passover seders in approximately 250 Chabad houses throughout Israel as well as approximately 3,000 Chabad houses across the world. They also gave him a tour of the matzah factory and instructed him on how to properly bake the matzah. The Israeli prime minister noted himself that, “At home, I have eaten Chabad-made matzah for years. Today, for the first time, I am also preparing it myself. I will get to eat the matzah that I have baked this coming Passover and that’s quite moving for me.” Chabad leaders told Netanyahu 18

“At home, I have eaten Chabad-made matzah for years. Today, for the first time, I am also preparing it myself. I will get to eat the matzah that I have baked this coming Passover and that’s quite moving for me.” that eating the matzah - the traditional unleavened bread eaten on Passover - expresses the belief that the Jewish People can withstand any pressure and asked that he continue to stand up for the freedom of the State of Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu, citing the Passover Haggadah added that “In every generation enemies rise up to destroy us but G-d saves us from them. www.thejewishlink.com

The haggadah mentions four sons – wise, wicked, simple and the one who does not know how to ask – but each one has a Jewish spark and you watch over this Jewish spark.” He also added that he was looking forward to the Passover holiday, which begins on Monday night, April 14. “I am very excited. I wish the entire Jewish People a Happy Passover.”

Malaysian Flight 370:

We Can’t Stand Uncertainty ROBERT J. ROME, PH.D.

A

s of the writing of this article, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 is missing. In one of the alltime mysteries in air flight history, the plane simply disappeared. While the plane is still missing, the Malaysian government has declared it lost at sea. But where is it lost? At first, it was felt it was lost in the South China Sea. Then, to the west of its original flight plan. Then, when we discovered that the plane had continued flying for about eight hours after it had been lost, the area of the south Indian Ocean became the definitive site. We can’t stand uncertainty. We grasp at satellite photographs of possible debris from a missing jetliner.

24

April, 2014 •

323-965-1544 •

Yes, a satellite photo seems to “definitely” show debris, most likely the debris from a missing jet, we think. That is until the items prove that they are not associated with the plane. Another photo may be the definitive picture of the debris field. But we then can’t locate that debris field with planes and ships at the site. Every day, we hear that we have a new, outstanding” lead. Then the debris field is estimated to be approximately 700 miles from the previous search site. And so it goes. We desire certainty, but after three weeks, there is no certainty. There is a good theory, followed by another good theory. We desire certainty, but there is no certainty.

www.thejewishlink.com

At the time of the writing of this article, it has been three weeks since Malaysia Flight 370 simply disappeared. The plane simply vanished off of radar screens. We know that satellites continued to follow the flight for seven to eight hours after it “disappeared.” But the beeps that were transmitted by the jet did not correspond to any GPS locators on earth. We learned that there was a possible north route for the plane, a course set by the pilot or co-pilot, that might take the jet to landing strips in Pakistan. There was also a southern route, also set by the pilot or co-pilot, where the plane might have run out of gas somewhere over the Indian Ocean. The distance

info@thejewishlink.com

from point A, the furthermost point on the northern route, to point B, the furthermost point on the southern route, is close to 10,000 miles! A little over two weeks after the disappearance, the Malaysian government bought into one of these theories and decreed that the plane had run out of gas and crashed into the Indian Ocean. All aboard were now dead. The search was as good as over. But, as of the writing of this article, about a week after the Malaysian government had declared the plane officially lost in the ocean, no parts of the plane had yet been found. Yes, satellite photographs had shown debris in several disparate parts of the Indian Ocean, but we have been learning during this search that the ocean is a waste bin for boats and ships. And the possible debris sites had proven impossible to find, at least as of the time of the writing of this article. We have learned much during the search for Malaysian Flight 370. First, we learned that the transponders which signal where a plane is can be turned off by the pilots or anyone else, including possible hijackers. Just a flick of a switch and the plane can “disappear.” And this is about 13 years after 9/11 when the hijackers were said to turn off the transponder switches of the planes. We learned that satellites that continued to track the flight cannot identify within 5,000 miles just where the flight was. We learned that pictures from satellites do not identify the longitude and latitude or the GPS positions of the pictures. The pictures taken can be from anywhere across tens of thousands of square miles of ocean surface. These realizations defy what we thought we knew. So why does the Malaysian government issue a seemingly premature statement that the plane had “officially” gone down in the Indian Ocean, without any actual proof? It seems that we all desire certainty. The Malaysian government simply used the preponderance of the seemingly available evidence to reach a conclusion. But when last charted, the flight was flying northwest, not southwest. One of the generals who provides commentary for Fox News is convinced that the plane continued northwest and landed on one of the military runways of Pakistan. But most people have adopted the theory that something may have happened to the pilots and the plane just kept on traveling south.

We don’t like mysteries. We want everything neat and clean. We want to hear something happened aboard the plane and the plane went on with a lifeless crew. Alternatively, we want to hear that the pilot, or co-pilot, was on a suicide mission. Anything but uncertainty. We don’t want to think that the plane was on a secret mission to land in Pakistan or in some other hostile country. We don’t want to think about the plane being refitted with bombs and then flying in the direction of Israel. We have learned much from this incident. First, we have learned that it is just plain idiotic to allow for transponders to be turned off by a switch. Whether this was done by the pilots or by a hijacker, permitting this to happen is ridiculous. Secondly, we learned that we need cooperation between countries. Thailand waited for days to confirm that their radar caught this flight. This was key information that they didn’t provide “because nobody asked.” We learned that it is not enough for satellites to take pictures, the pictures need indicate GPS stats. It is a vast ocean out there. Pinpointing the exact location of a picture is key to finding any objects located. This is a terrible story, but there is no reason to prematurely say the plane went down when there isn’t any actual proof. The families don’t deserve a premature “decision.” They want to hold out hope until we can be sure. What if there was a plan by the pilot or co-pilot to commandeer the aircraft when changing air traffic controllers and to direct the flight to some secret airstrip. After all, the pilot did rehearse the landing on a variety of airstrips on his flight simulator in his home. Someone in the cockpit had turned off the transponder, most likely so the flight could not be followed. This appeared simultaneous with the change in course. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Until all possibilities have been pursued, Israel is right in believing that this Malaysian airliner could present a potential threat to its airspace. We want definite answers, but this one time, there may just not be an easy answer. Every experience can be a learning experience. Even if the plane is soon found, we have much to learn from the experience of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.

We want definite answers, but this one time, there may just not be an easy answer.

The primary objective of the drill was to test the operations and preparedness of the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital, scheduled to open in the next couple of months. The 2,000-bed Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital (FUEH) is the largest of its kind in the world, designed to protect the patients of Northern Israel in times of war. The concept behind this integrated parking lot/underground hospital was conceived after the Second Lebanon War, during which the hospital came under direct rocket fire. Lessons learned from that experience led to the design and construction of the underground hospital to assure the safety of Rambam’s patients and personnel. Another drive to construct such a facility emanates from the understanding that the next war will necessitate provision of medical care under fire. With recent history in mind, part of this exercise included a simulation of Rambam Hos-

pital under a missile attack—an all too realistic scenario. The drill included transfer of one large department and a few medical units from the hospital’s main building to the FUEH, which extends three floors underground. The logistic exercise included operating of systems and the deployment of necessary equipment. Once set up, hospital staff practiced the transfer of hospital beds and equipment to designated locations on each of the floors of the underground hospital, including the transfer of complex intensive care, dialysis, and surgical equipment. During an unexpected emergency the FUEH will have to receive hundreds of oncology and gynecology patients, dozens of dialysis patients, and hundreds of other patients in need of medical services—not to mention the wounded coming in from the battlefield or the civilians wounded in the rocket attacks. This exercise is a small part of the massive logistical operations practiced at Rambam in preparation for times of crisis conducted with the assistance of other agencies, including the Home Front Command (HFC), the Ministry

The Observant Jew

Being in Charge RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ

P

art of the wondrous advances we’ve made in technology is the frustration of the constant need for electricity. As the phones get smarter, the battery life seems to get shorter. You need to always know where your charger is or else you risk missing an important call, e-mail, or Words With Friends notification. The old phones used to hold a charge for days if you didn’t use them, but now I find myself keeping a charger in the car, in my wife’s car, at home, and in my various offices. It’s almost involuntary that I’m going to plug my phone in as soon as I sit down. Of course if I don’t, things stop working as they should and the specter of a totally dead phone looms large. When my kids want to play on my phone, I have to consider whether I have enough battery life for them to do it before it dies completely. They already know that I won’t let them use it if I need to plug it in. As I got in the car one day to go to shul, I began to plug my phone in. I thought about how silly it was. How much could it possibly charge in the three or four minutes it took for me to get there? Then, of course, I told myself it was better than nothing. If it wasn’t plugged in it would use using battery life just by being on, so I could at least combat that by plugging it in. It was then that I got the idea for this article. As we approach Pesach, I’m reminded of a famous comment of R’ Yaakov Kamenetsky z”l. Moshe told Paroh that the Jews wanted to go serve HaShem for 40

three days in the desert. Instead, as we know, they left Egypt entirely, never to return. How could Moshe have misled Paroh this way? R’ Yaakov suggests that in truth, the original plan was to go out for a three-day retreat, get the Torah, and come back to Egypt to finish out the four hundred years. It was only because Paroh refused and they tarried longer that they sank to the lowest level of impurity and had to be completely redeemed. He explains that the original three-day trip would have given the Jews the chance to recharge their spiritual batteries, giving them the strength to withstand the remaining years of exile in Egypt. The study of Torah is unique in that it has special qualities that enable people to cope with difficulty. Having the Torah allows us to put challenges and hardships in perspective and survive what would otherwise be intolerable. Do you see where I’m heading with this? Even if they couldn’t get completely recharged, the three days of Kabolas HaTorah and spiritual “charge” would have given our People the power they needed to make it through until they could be fully plugged in to HaShem in Eretz Yisrael. We can and should apply this to everyday life as well. Any opportunity we have to do something spiritual should be taken. If we can plug in for three minutes in the car and listen to a Torah lecture, great. If we are

www.thejewishlink.com

info@thejewishlink.com

waiting for someone and can say a chapter of Tehillim, fantastic. If we can think about the six constant mitzvos, that HaShem exists and is uniquely in charge of the world, to love Him, revere Him, and not seek out other gods or follow the desires of our eyes and heart – we’ve just connected to the Source and recharged ourselves a little bit. When we find things that may pull us away from the Source, like when my kids (or I, myself ) want to waste my phone’s battery playing games, we have to gauge the benefit or importance of them and how it will negatively impact our spiritual battery. Remember, just existing uses up our battery. Walking down the street, controlling our thoughts and mouths, these things take energy! The best answer is to constantly plug in and keep charging whenever you can. Even those little moments of

being “in charge” may be the ones that help you make it through the day. Jonathan Gewirtz is a prolific inspirational writer whose work has appeared in publications around the world. He also operates JewishSpeechWriter.com, where you can order a custom-made speech for your next special occasion.

The Power of Music

YESHIVA AHARON YAAKOV/OHR ELIYAHU BOYS’ CHOIR VISITS GARDEN OF PALMS

“This was not only a performance of music but also of chesed” 44

T

he Yeshiva Aharon Yaakov/ Ohr Eliyahu (YAYOE) Boys’ Choir performed at the Garden of Palms Jewish home for the aged on March 11, just before Purim. This was not only a performance of music but also of Chesed for after boys sang their six songs they distributed Hamantashen and spoke to the members of the audience establishing a special connection between our younger and our older generations. The twenty-six member choir is directed by Rabbi Yitzchak Golbart who rehearses the choir during the after school as part of the Enrichment Program. Rabbi Golbart said the parents are so happy that their sons have the opportunity to bring choral music experiences into their lives and to be able to share their gifts with the community. One parent said watching the boys and the relationship between them and the

audience brought her to tears. A woman there who has both parents living at the Garden of Palms said she wished this could be done each week because it was so good for her them; it was a very meaningful morning. Rabbi Goldberg, the Menahel of YAYOE, offered a wonderful introduction of the Choir and a powerful drash about Purim and music. In preparation for the Rabbi Goldberg encouraged the boys to speak to the residents and ask about them. One could see in the sparkling eyes of each of the residents who attended the performance and spoke to the boys. Thanks go to Mrs. Shelly Fenig who provided the individually wrapped Hamantashen, to all of the parents who transported and chaperoned the boys and to the staff of the Garden of Palms; all made the event possible and successful.

A True Dayan

Veteran Gang Homicide Prosecutor Running for Judge

A

mong the most dynamic candidates for L.A. County Superior Court judge this year is Dayan Mathai. He is running for Office No. 61 in the June 3rd election. Dayan, a seasoned criminal prosecutor, is the son of immigrants who taught their four children the values of working hard and service to others. Dayan’s parents came to America from the Malabar Coast of south India, where there has been a Jewish presence since the time of King Solomon. Dayan’s parents were raised in an area rich with political and cultural knowledge of the Jewish people and grew up with a unique understanding of the history of the Jewish people. After arriving in the United States in 1962, Dayan’s parents continued to follow news about Israel (this was the time of Golda Meir) and the challenges the new nation faced. When their only son was born in 1969, they proudly named him after Moshe Dayan, the Israeli war hero and statesman. It was years later that they discovered that Dayan means “judge” in Hebrew, stirring hope that this might indeed be their son’s destiny, to carry out justice in their newfound country. Dayan grew up in southeast Los Angeles County and graduated from Biola University. He graduated from the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University in Washington, D.C. While living in the nation’s capital and the heart of America’s judicial branch, Dayan was inspired by his dynamic professors and academic mentors to dedicate his career to the law and to seek justice for those victimized by criminals. Dayan joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office as a Deputy District Attorney in 1999. Dayan’s prosecutorial talents and passion for justice led him to the Victim Impact Prosecution (VIP) Unit, which prosecutes violent crimes against women and children. One of Dayan’s first murder trials, Dayan 46

successfully prosecuted the case and secured a life sentence for the killer. During these early years as a prosecutor Dayan received valuable experience in the courtroom, trying more than 70 Felony Jury Trials. These trials included four murder cases, and eight attempted murder cases, for which Dayan secured a 100% conviction rate. In 2006, Dayan was promoted by former District Attorney Steve Cooley and assigned to the elite Hardcore Gang Division, where he prosecuted the most violent gang members. In just over six years in the gang division Dayan successfully tried over 30 murder cases, including multiple-defendant cases, complex special circumstances murders, and death penalty cases. In all, Dayan tried more than 50 gang members in 35 Hardcore Gang Cases, including 30 gang murder cases, with an admirable conviction rate of 97%. In June 2010, Dayan was awarded the Hardcore Gang Prosecutor of the Month for his successful back-to-back prosecutions of complex murder trials. His career has been marked by a consistent dedication to seeking peace in the city through the proper execution of justice, and he has worked to do so with integrity and moral character, values he believes are essential in a civil society. Dayan believes he has been able to handle complex trials because of his foundational understanding of right and wrong, the need to hold people accountable for their actions, and to ensure that justice is sought for both victims, the accused, and the society at large. Dayan has been featured on the History Channel’s “Gangland” series for his successful murder prosecution of an MS-13 Gang member who had killed an innocent victim. In 2012, Dayan was recruited to the Organized Crime Division, another specialized division of LADA, which focuses on the most sophistiwww.thejewishlink.com

cated and dangerous organized crime and mafia criminals. Dayan was the lead prosecutor in the March 2013 indictment of 25 MS-13 gang members for extortion and conspiracy to extort food trucks in the Hollywood area, the largest criminal case of its kind in Los Angeles County history. This case has been widely credited with reducing criminal activity by the MS-13 gang in this neighborhood and improving the area’s business climate. In recognition of Dayan’s impressive record as a prosecutor and his extensive courtroom experience, his candidacy for L.A. Superior Court has been endorsed by a bipartisan group of officeholders including District Attorney Jackie Lacey and L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe as well as more than 35 sitting judges. In addition, Dayan is endorsed by many law enforcement groups, including the L.A. County Police Chiefs’ Association, the Association of L.A. Deputy Sheriffs, and the L.A. Police Protective League. As much as Dayan loves his job in criminal courts, he also enjoys being on basketball and tennis courts in his spare time. As a fan of live music, Dayan attends many concerts and performances, and he even enjoys playing the piano and guitar himself. And, his exposure to L.A.’s diverse ethnic restaurants has inspired Dayan’s zeal for cooking Dayan dedicates much of his free time to fulfilling his parents’ example of service to others. He regularly volunteers with Hope For L.A., and has led several projects for Serve the City, Hope for LA’s annual service day. Dayan has personally led volunteer teams for Say Yes, an inner-city after school project, and The Weingart Homeless Shelter. For more information about Dayan, please visit www.MathaiForJudge.com.

A Taste of

Pesach Trusted Favorites. Simple Preparation. Magnificent Results.

From the publisher of the wildly popular Kosher By Design series comes a brand-new cookbook designed to put ease and confidence back into Passover cooking. BABY BELLA AND CRANBERRY BRISKET My cousin, who is very innovative in the kitchen, recommended this brisket recipe. Our photographer asked to take a break after photographing it, because it looked so good, he wanted to try some. He gave it two enthusiastic thumbs up! Meat ∙ Yields 10 servings Ingredients 1 (4-pound) brisket 1 cup chicken broth 1 cup jellied cranberry sauce ¼ cup potato starch 1 large onion, sliced 4 cloves garlic, chopped

¾ Tablespoon dried rosemary salt, to taste pepper, to taste 12 ounces baby Portobello mushrooms, cleaned and halved

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400°F.

5. Cover. Bake for 2½ hours.

2. Whisk together broth, cranberry sauce, and potato starch.

6. Add mushrooms and bake, covered, for additional 45 minutes.

3. Pour mixture into a large roasting pan. Add onions, garlic, and rosemary. 4. Season roast with salt and pepper. Place over onions in roasting pan. Spoon cranberry mixture in the pan over the meat. 50

CHOCOLATE CRINKLE COOKIES These are so good that we wanted to name them “I Can’t Believe It’s Pesach Crinkle Cookies,” but the title was too long! Pareve ∙ Yields about 50 cookies Ingredients ¾ cup oil 1¼ cups cocoa plus 1 Tablespoon 2 cups sugar 4 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla 2 cups potato starch 2 teaspoons baking powder confectioners’ sugar, for rolling

Directions 1. Using an electric mixer, beat together oil, cocoa, and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating to combine. Add vanilla, potato starch, and baking powder. Beat until batter reaches peanut butter consistency). 2. Refrigerate batter, covered, for 1-2 days. 3. Preheat oven to 350°F. 4. Use a small cookie scoop to form balls. Roll each ball in confectioners’ sugar. Place onto cookie sheets, 1 inch apart.

5. Bake for 8 minutes — don’t over-bake, as cookies will harden as they cool. Cool on cookie sheets for 10 minutes before removing.

Featuring What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan? Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.
