The Observant Jew

L’Chaim! RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ

T

his common refrain when making a toast is so well established that it has become a noun on its own. People will say, “Let’s make a L’Chaim,” or, “You’re invited to my daughter’s L’Chaim.” What they mean is that there will be some sort of alcoholic drink consumed and the actual swallowing will be preceded by a hearty wish of, “L’Chaim! – To life!” So where did this come from and why is it so important to the Jewish culture? Do we truly idealize the consumption of liquor? Are we praising the buzz or the escape that drinking affords a person? Of course not. There must be something deeper, something more meaningful. One source for this custom comes from Talmudic times when wine was very strong and drinking undiluted wine could be harmful. Before one drank wine, he would say,“Savri, Maranan,” asking his companions, “What do you hold? Has it been diluted? Is this safe to drink?” Their response, if it was safe, would be “L’chaim! To Life!” to let him know that it would not hurt him. In fact, many Sefardim still have this custom during Kiddush. When the one making Kiddush says, “Savri, How do you hold,” or alternatively, “pay attention for I am now making a bracha,” the listeners respond with a hearty, “L’chaim!” It would make sense to continue the practice if there were health concerns, and I imagine that most of us are careful to make sure that we are about to ingest something that will not kill us, at least, not instantly. Why, then, has the practice continued and more than that, achieved some sort of mystique about it? The answer lies

10

in something fundamental that we might have missed. The translation of the word is not so cut-and-dried. You see, if we wanted to say, “life,” or “alive,” the word would be ‘chai.’ The fact that we use the word ‘chaim,’ with an m at the end, makes all the difference in the world, or actually, worlds. When we partake of a food or beverage, we make a bracha before we do. In that way, we acquire from HaShem the right to consume the item, and we elevate it as well. We know that there are physical and spiritual aspects to everything. When we say, “L’chaim,” we are not saying “To life” but “Two Lives” (or, “to two lives” to be more precise.) Chaim is a plural form of chai which connotes two types of life. One is the physical world in which we dwell and the other is the spiritual world we aim for. We ideally should be cognizant of both these existences at all times. Our job in this world is to take the physical and uplift it by giving it an aspect of the spiritual. By recognizing that the purpose of the drink is not just to indulge but to sanctify the day through Kiddush, we are living not just one life, but two lives, or, “Chaim!” As an extension of this, when we wish to enjoy a drink as part of a simcha, we recall the fact that the enjoyment is not purely physical but spiritual too! We wish people well on both a physical level and a spiritual one as a reminder to us and to them as well that to truly live is to live a life now that will last for eternity.

info@thejewishlink.com

When we use fine crystal and silver on Pesach, or when we eat on Shabbos and Yom Tov (and we Jews really eat on Shabbos and Yom Tov!) we are bringing the physical and spiritual together to remind ourselves of what it means to truly live. The Sukkah, of course, is a most amazing coalescence of these ideas. We must have solid walls, a symbol of the physical world. However, the roof is open to HaShem’s sky, representing the limitless eternal nature of our own ruchnius, the fact that our lives are lived for a future world as well, which is closely interconnected with our physical one. Every time we eat, drink, relax, play, or schmooze, we can ensure that it is for, and has an aspect of, spirituality. If we eat, drink, or exercise to be healthy to serve HaShem, if we relax to be a better parent or spouse when we’re refreshed, or if we schmooze to build friendships and steer the conversations away from lashon hara, then we have successfully connected this world to the next and are living not one life, but two at the same time. This Sukkos, as you’re sitting fully-immersed in the mitzvah that shows us how to connect the two worlds, have a cookie, look

skyward, and drink to your success. L’chaim! Looking for a book to engage your teen? The Observant Jew, a compilation of some of Rabbi Gewirtz’s best articles from years past, is receiving critical acclaim with special focus on its appeal to young adults. With short, funny, insightful selections, your son or daughter may not even realize they’re gaining Yiras Shomayim, Simchas HaChaim, and Midos Tovos. To them, it’s just fun to read. Look for it in your favorite Jewish Book Store or visit Feldheim.com and see what a difference it can make!

A Quality Education for All

Private school looks to means-tested fees to beat affordability crisis BY JUSTINE FERRARI

T

he rising unaffordability of private school fees has prompted one independent school to overhaul the way it charges parents, introducing a system that calculates tuition fees based on parents’ income. Independent Jewish school YeshivahBeth Rivkah Colleges in Melbourne is believed to be the first school in Australia to charge parents in line with what they can afford, with the introduction of a “means-tested” fee scheme. School fees will be capped at a maximum level, rising from 8 per cent to 18 per cent depending on household income, regardless of the number of children enrolled. Principal Yehoshua Smukler said the school decided to tackle the issue of affordability head-on after reviewing declining enrolment trends in Jewish schools across the nation. “The No 1 reason families are opting out is simply affordability,” he said. “Families don’t want to go into significant debt or make unreasonable compromises to their lifestyle. They want a private school and Jewish education for their children but find it’s unaffordable.” Rabbi Smukler said private school fees, which are already more than $30,000 for Year 12 in some of the elite schools, were expected to reach $50,000 in the next five years, and the school felt the need to act to remain open to the broad community. The college is one of the top-performing schools academically in the nation, with its students scoring alongside the

16

elite private schools in national literacy and numeracy tests and in Year 12 exams. But Rabbi Smukler said the school was not interested in being elite and its excellent results were an outcome of the education provided, not the goal. “We don’t want to become a school for the elite,’’ he said. “We believe a quality education should be accessible. Some of our families can afford any school they want but they’re choosing our school on purpose because they believe in what we are offering.” The new scheme, called CAPS (Creating Access Promoting Success), is modelled on a system used in Montreal, which Rabbi Smukler said the school had modified and improved. It is available immediately for new students and from next year for existing families with annual net household income and investments of less than $350,000, excluding the family home. For a family with a net income of $150,000 a year, the school fee is set at

323-965-1544 •

www.thejewishlink.com

12.5 per cent, or $18,750, which is more than the tuition cost for prep, which is about $12,000. So if a family had a child starting prep it would pay $12,000, but if the family had more children it would pay only a maximum of $18,750, regardless of the number of children or their age. At present, the college’s fees range from about $12,000 in prep to about $25,000 in Year 12. Rabbi Smukler said the scheme had been road-tested with families before it was rolled out and, despite the differing levels of charges, was welcomed for its transparency and certainty. “The philosophy of our school is very inclusive, we welcome families from a very wide range of the Jewish community,” he said. “It’s been a fundamental part of our philosophy since our school was founded about 70 years ago to be an accessible, community school.”

From Oklahoma to Jerusalem World’s Oldest Jewish Prayer Book Makes Its Way Home BY BY ANAV SILVERMAN, TAZPIT NEWS AGENCY

t was a historical moment at Jerusalem’s Bible Lands Museum on Thursday night, September 18, as the world’s oldest known Jewish prayer book, or siddur, was displayed for the first time to the general public with leading Jewish and Christian figures present. The siddur, which is 1,200 years old, belongs to Steve Green of Oklahoma, who owns the largest private collection of biblical artifacts in the world, with over 44,000 rare texts and biblically-related objects. This prayer book will be displayed for one month in the Book of Books exhibit, the internationally-acclaimed exhibition which displays the most important biblical texts and traces “I know that the Jewish the history of the Bible and the dissemination of the monotheistic faith. people have a great On display are original fragments appreciation for this from the Septuagint, the earliest New Testament Scriptures, exquisite illuprayer book. three main parts; the morning service, liturgical poems and the Haggadah read at the Passover Seder. It dates back to the first half of the Ninth Century AD during the period of the Babylonian Geonim, the spiritual leaders of the Jewish community in the early medieval era. It was during this period that Amram Gaon, one of the leading Geonim, wrote an orderly liturgy for the first time used for both the synagogue and home. The siddur originates from the Middle East and has undergone sophisticated carbontest dating methods to validate its age. “Scholars have yet to fully research the prayer book,” added Weiss, noting that that there are experts around the world studying high-quality digitalized versions of the siddur. Green purchased the siddur over a year and a half ago for his Oklahoma-based collection but the prayer book will eventually be permanently hosted at the Museum of the Bible which is currently under construction in Washington D.C. Before the prayer book was purchased by Green, it was originally in the hands of a private family for many generations according to Weiss. “I know that the Jewish people have a great appreciation for this

Among those present at the unveiling of the prayer book at the Bible Lands Museum on Thursday night were Speaker of the Knesset, MK Yuli Edlestein and Father Gabriel Nadaf, a Nazareth-based Greek Orthodox priest, who has worked to foster closer ties between Jewish and Christian communities in Israel. “I’m proud to be here this evening because together we are witnessing our shared history and faith, and experiencing history anew from eyes that appreciate the past,” Nadaf told Tazpit. “It’s a very moving moment and it comes from the heart, to see where we originally come from.” “Not only are we the ‘People of the Book’, we are the people of the same book, the same language and prayer book,” Green told Tazpit News Agency. “It’s been the same prayers,” said Speaker Edelstein. “These are through many travels and I’m glad that it has made its way the exact same words millions of Jews say every morning and here to Jerusalem,” he added. Sola-Darity!

LA Community takes action in honor of Israel

O

n Sunday, September 14, more than 70 members of the Chabad Sola community came together to celebrate. The occasion was Sola-Darity!, an evening of live music, freshly made falafel and lots of happy people. More importantly, it was the celebration of a successful, community solidarity trip, straight into the heart of Operation Protective Edge, in the South of Israel. As thousands of rockets were being fired at Israel, landing as far north as Tel Aviv and crippling small businesses in the south, Jews all over the world stood united to help their brothers and sisters living in Israel. Under the leadership of Rabbi Avraham Zajac of Chabad Sola, many members of the Los Angeles area donated money and gifts to help the Jews in Israel affected most by the war. Several lucky members were able to go as emissaries. The trip began in the holy city of Hebron, where the group had a chance to spiritually energize before heading into the South. The reason for starting the trip in Hebron, according to Rabbi Zajac, is that “the city of Hebron represents and is the portal between the physical world and the higher world. Without a doubt that part of the journey added to the tremendous success that Hashem granted us with this beautiful trip.” Eran Weiss, one of the Chabad Sola members on the trip, described the arrival into the South of Israel as one of struggling shopkeepers and big hotels, deserted in the middle of the busy season. “We came to bring them happiness, and to take them out of their routine,”

“I have never been more proud to be a Jew, and to be member of a Chabad of Sola Community that has this kind of initiative.” — Rabbi Zajac.

said Weiss. “We came to show love and support to all the people we met, to be a part of an emotional journey into Israel.” The money the group spent in the

local stores was, at times, more than the storeowners had seen since the fighting began. They even delivered toys to young children in schools situated right on the border with Gaza. During a video presentation at the event, Sola-Darity!, a teacher from one of the schools is seen thanking the Jewish community in Los Angeles for the special gifts. She finishes by saying, “It really makes us stronger to know that you, the Jewish community in Los Angeles, are with us in these not easy moments. Thank you very much.” The group also had the opportunity to visit the soldiers on the front line, anxious to go home and yet ready to defend, and in the hospitals’ intensive care units, badly bruised and severely

burned. Many had already lost friends in the war. Omri Cohen, another member of the group said,“You could see that all of them were just happy to be alive.” According to Cohen, “It was a joy for life that you could just see in every one of those soldiers. It was very inspiring.” While the event was both a fundraiser for Chabad Sola and

the Chabad Terror Victims Project in Israel, it was also a chance for the community to come together, to celebrate life and to inspire further action. Sponsored by Aviv Vodka, Shirah Wine, Lieder’s Catering, Ataras Judaica, Maimon Music, and a number of generous community members, Sola-Darity! was another part of the movement that Rabbi Zajac has been cultivating since he came to Los Angeles. Rabbi Zajac explained his reason for the event using the beautiful words of the Rambam, that “a person should always view oneself as being in perfect balance between ones good side and ones opposite side.” He hosted this event to reaffirm the notion that, “when we do one good deed, say one good word, or even have one good thought, we bring redemption both to ourselves, and to the entire world. How much more so when it comes to our connection to our land, to the holy land, to Eretz Yisroel.” Chabad Sola would like to specially thank all of the event sponsors for their help and support, and all those from the community who with their time, energy and resources, helped make the trip to Israel and the Sola-Darity! event so successful and impactful. A

memorial event with a special photo exhibition honoring the late Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon took place on Monday, September 15 in Minsk at the National History Museum of Belarus, from where Sharon’s parents immigrated to the Jewish State. The event was held as part of the Limmud FSU Belarus festival, a festival of Jewish learning, held Sept. 12-14 in Vitebsk, which drew over 600 young Jews, mostly professionals 20-40 years old. The memorial for Israel’s eleventh prime minister was held in collaboration with the Government of Belarus, the Embassy of Israel, and the local Jewish community, with the participation of Sharon’s son Gilad, and close aide Israel Maimon, who served as his Cabinet Secretary. Marit Danon, the head secretary in Prime Minister’s Sharon’s office, curated the Sharon photo exhibition, which includes photos from the Israel Defense Forces, the Israeli government archives and his personal

collections. A press conference and meeting with local officials also took place following the event. “I am very excited to stand here today at the opening of the exhibition on the life of my father,” said Gilad Sharon at the opening ceremony. “My father’s life stations integrated in Israel’s history, and I hope this beautiful exhibition will be another step in deepening the relationship between Israel and Diaspora Jews, and maybe some of them will go to Israel.”

“It is a great honor for Limmud FSU to host this new exhibition, which is on display here in Belarus, about one of the great leaders of the State of Israel who was born to parents who came from this country last century,” said Chaim Chesler, founder of Limmud FSU. “Ariel Sharon never forgot the legacy of his family and put in great effort to learn Russian and his family’s history. This is why we’ve decided to have this event and exhibition during our Limmud FSU Belarus Festival- to show a wonderful example of a great leader whose roots are here, though his life and activities were in Israel.” Sharon himself was born in Kfar Malal, an agricultural moshav in central Israel in 1928. He is not the only Israeli with Belorussian roots to be honored in Belarus of late. Last week, on September 12, a ceremony honoring Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the father of modern Hebrew, was held 100 miles north of Minsk in Glubokoe, where Ben Yehua

studied Jewish studies. Launched during the second Jewish learning conference in Belarus of Limmud FSU, the ceremony featured the unveiling of a plaque by Ben Yehuda’s greatgrandson Gil Hovav, an Israeli celebrity chef. Ben Yehuda immigrated to the land of Israel in 1881, where he worked to revive and modernize the Hebrew language. “This emphasis helps Jewish and nonJewish Belorussians connect to Israel and the Jewish people,” Chaim Chesler told the JTA, remarking on Limmud FSU’s priority to underline the cultural links between Israel and Belarus. The Jewish community in Belarus in the third largest in the former Soviet Union, with Minsk serving as the largest center with 20,000 Jews living in the capital and the rest spread out in the country’s smaller cities and towns. Other Israelis with Belorussian roots include former prime ministers Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir as well as former presidents Chaim Weizmann and Shimon Peres.

Young Israel’s Mission to D.C.

I

n the aftermath of Operation Protective Edge, during which Hamas terrorists launched indiscriminate rocket attacks against Israel and Israel endured unwarranted criticism from many in the international community, the state of the U.S.-Israel relationship is as important as ever before. As the diplomatic efforts to curtail Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions continue, it is essential that Israel’s legitimate concerns about its safety and security be duly addressed. With global anti-Semitism increasing at a rapid and frightening pace, the effort to combat the hatred is absolutely vital. It was against that backdrop that the National Council of Young Israel’s (NCYI) Executive Board traveled to the nation’s capital on September 10, 2014 for its Leadership Mission to Washington, DC. Hailing from California, Florida, and various cities up and down the East Coast, the Young Israel leaders spent the day interacting with White House officials and key lawmakers in Congress. Participants in the mission included NCYI President Farley Weiss, Chairman of the Board Bob Levi, 1st Vice President Yosef Poplack, Recording Secretary Bea Seinuk-Ackerman, and Associate Vice Presidents Asher Miller, Stanley Treitel, and Baila Weiss. The day began with a special White House briefing that was organized by Matt Nosanchuk, Director of Outreach for the National Security Council and the Obama administration’s liaison to the Jewish community, at which time the Young Israel mission participants were updated on a number of important issues. Two senior staff members from President Obama’s National Security Council (NSC), Maher Bitar, Director for Israeli and Palestinian Affairs at the NSC, and Nitin Chadda, Director for Iran at the NSC, provided timely information relating to Israel’s security needs in the wake of Hamas’ attacks on Israeli citizens, continuing peace

discussions between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority, the status of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, the troubling situation with regard to Turkey, and the emergent threat posed by ISIL. In addition, Stacy Bernard Davis, Senior Advisor for the U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism at the U.S. Department of State, made a presentation about government-togovernment discussions relating to the shocking rise in anti-Semitic attacks on European Jewish communities, as well as engagement with the Jewish communities themselves. The Young Israel mission participants then traveled to the U.S. Capitol, where they were addressed by Senators and Representatives that play a formative role in constructing legislation to enhance the relationship between the United States and the State of Israel. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, discussed his efforts to impose new sanctions on Iran in order to keep the Iranian government honest and curtail its illicit enrichment program. “Under no circumstances can Iran be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon,” said Senator Menendez. Senator Menendez also spoke about his staunch support for the State of Israel. “I believe that Israel has the right to defend itself, just like any other country in the world,” he said. “I will continue working to keep Israel safe and secure.” The Senator decried Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ marriage to the terrorist group Hamas and noted that he is exploring the imposition of financial consequences in response to the PA’s actions. Referring to his feelings about the BDS movement, Senator Menendez made his position extremely clear.“Any talk about boycotts of Israel are condemnable by me,” he said.

7+( '(67,1< 2) 7+( -(:6 The fate of the Jewish people is unlike that of any other nation. We are either exalted and revered or downtrodden and oppressed — there is no middle ground. If we follow the ways of HASHEM, the Torah assures us that we will live a life of prosperity, abundance, and peace. Secure in our borders, finding only goodness and happiness in our land, we will be blessed. However, if we reject HASHEM’s ways, then we will be cursed; oppressed, and tortured, — hunted down by our enemies until we are thrown out of our land.. At the end of a long prophecy of what will befall us if we don’t follow the ways of HASHEM, the Torah seems to lay the blame on one issue: because you did not serve HASHEM, your G-d, amid gladness and goodness of heart when everything was abundant. It seems the pivotal point of these two extremes is based on simcha.-- Implying that serving HASHEM with happiness is critical to our success 42

as a nation. Rabbeinu Bachya explains that this is because the mitzvahs must be done with joy and complete devotion. When the mitzvahs are done without joyfulness, they are lacking in their effect, and this can be part of the spiral downward. He then gives an example of a mitzvah that wasn’t done with complete motivation. The Medrash tells us that when Reuvain attempted to save Yosef from his brothers, he said, “Let us put him in the pit.” His intention was to buy some time to eventually save him. However, had he realized that he would be recorded in history as the one who saved Yosef, he would have put him on his shoulders and carried him home to his father. From here we see the importance of doing a mitzvah with complete dedication and commitment.

7+( 32:(5 2) 6,0&+$ This Rabbeinu Bachaya is difficult to understand on two levels. First, how can the Torah command me to be happy? Being happy isn’t an emotion that we can turn on and off like a light switch. And second, how can we compare the effect of doing a mitzvah joyfully to the case of Reuvain? That was a classic example of kavod. We are well aware that honor is one of the most powerful driving forces in

the human condition. Public recognition, fame, and having one’s name in the floodlights of history are things that people in every generation kill for. Granted Reuvain was a tzaddik, but the fact that he would have been titled the savior of Yosef for eternity is something that would propel a man to extremes. How can that be compared to something as minor as joy in the performance of a mitzvah? While happiness when doing a mitzvah may be a nicety, it certainly can’t be ranked up there with kavod as a driving force. The answer to these questions can best be understood through a different perspective.

it, emotionally we just don’t feel it will happen. With that emotional blindness comes blindness to the value of our actions. Since in our operating reality, I will never die, then what I do or don’t do really doesn’t matter. If for a flashing moment, I were to see what the World to Come will be like for me, I would effectively lose free will. The extraordinary accomplishment of one mitzvah would so overwhelm me that I would be completely and radically different — not different physically, not smarter, but much more driven to accomplish my purpose in life. When Chazal tell us over and over again that mitzvahs are worth far more than the greatest treasures in this world, it is because they had that clarity. They understood what it will be like for each of us as we regale in our great wealth. In that World, we will look back at every chance we had to grow as the greatest opportunity ever given to man. We will look back at our mitzvahs, and they will bring us far more joy than earning than a million dollars an hour. This seems to be the answer to Rabbenu Bachya. One of the greatest motivators in the human is enthusiasm. That enthusiasm is based on a value system. If I value money, I will be driven to pursue it, and the acquisition of it will bring me great joy. If I gain a deeper perspective on life, then I experience elation, knowing that my net worth in the World to Come is growing at an incredible rate. My investments are paying back in spades. That excitement is one of the most powerful motivating forces — equal even to kavod. With it, a person can reach great heights. Without it, a person’s avodas HASHEM can become stale and lose its potency, thus beginning a downward spiral. Ultimately, joy is a great force that both allows a person to enjoy his short stay in this world and propels him to achieve the greatness for which he was created.

Doesn’t everyone want to be happy?

,) , :(5( $ 5,&+ 0$1 Sheldon G. Adelson, the son of immigrant parents, grew up in a poor neighborhood of Boston. His father was a taxi driver; his mother ran a knitting store. At a young age, Adelson began showing an entrepreneurial spirit, first by selling newspapers on local street corners, and then by becoming the owner of his first business at age twelve. Over the course of his working career, he built over fifty companies. He is now the owner of Las Vegas Sands Corp., the parent company of the Venetian Resort. In 2003, his net worth was ranked at 1.4 billion dollars. While that is an impressive sum, it didn’t put him anywhere near the richest people in the world. ais Rebbe Jr. High was buzzing with excitement shortly after the school year began. In honor of Vov Tishrei, they scheduled a Mother and Daughter Mega Challah Bake for all Jr. High girls in Los Angeles and their moms! The girls acted as Shluchos, racing to see how many guests each girl could invite. Representatives visited the local schools in the weeks before with fliers and were met with an enthusiastic response at Toras Emes, Darko, Etz Jacob, Bais Tzivia, and Yavneh as well as encouraging their friends from Ohr Eliyahu, Hillel and Public School to join as well. Years ago, the Rebbe blessed the first graduating class of Bais Chaya Mushka in a unique letter that they should be “Neiros Le’hair”, lamps which illuninate. The Rebbe’s vision was clearly seen as the girls prepared for the event, and compiled a beautiful booklet for the event explaining the deeper meaning of challah and sharing inspiring stories. The night before the event, girls were at school with one of their amazing teachers and their incredible B’nos Chabad heads, Miss Chaya Zirkind, Miss Sarah Elharrar and Miss Chanie Mentz, pre-packaging ingredients and building the beautiful centerpieces. Girls in all different styles of uniforms were seen on Pico Blvd. last night, approaching Schneerson Square with thier moms. They were greeted warmly and given a special welcome kit. At the event itself, the crowd was led in Tehillim by Rebbetzen Cunin, the Rebbe’s Shlucha to the West

Each ingredient was introduced by a different girl who connected the ingredient to a different bracha to daven for: Sara Newman introduced the yeast and asked everyone to daven for Hashem’s constant protection as hinted in the hebrew word for yeast - Shemarim. Simi Broner davened that the warmth of Torah be constantly in our lives as represented by the warm water. Next, Sharon Shashoua led us in asking that the brachos that Hashem give us be openly sweet and good like sugar. Bina Stauber reminded us to pray for those who are in need of the bracha of children as represented by the eggs. She also demonstrated how to check an egg to make sure it is kosher. Chaya Solika Garbose begged that Hashem’s shechina should rest upon us as it did on the keilim which were annointed with oil. Simcha is the foundation of a Jewish life just as flour is the foundation of the dough was what Chani Sulami shared as she poured in the flour. Finally, Chana Cohen told us about the

ROASTED VEGETABLE COUSCOUS I adapted this recipe from Bobby Flay’s and basically any vegetables will work. I have made it with regular zucchini and peppers and I recently made it this way. Instead of broiling large pieces of zucchini, I sauteed the baby zucchini and pea pods and added the cherry tomatoes at the end. Times Prep Time : 20 min Cook Time : 15 min Ready Time : 35 min

Servings 8

Ingredients 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup olive oil salt and pepper 1 cup baby zucchini, cut into thirds (or 1 large zucchini) 1 cup sugar snap peas, cut into thirds

12 cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 1/4 cup basil 1/4 cup parsley 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound Israeli couscous 2 cups water or stock

Directions In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, mustard and garlic, slowly add the olive oil and whisk until combined. Season with salt and pepper. Pour 1/2 the marinade over the vegetables and let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes. Heat a large deep saute pan, once hot add zucchini and sugar snap peas. Saute for 5-10 minutes until desired doneness. Remove from pan and set aside. Add the olive oil to the pan and bring over medium-high heat, 48

add the couscous and toast until lightly golden brown. Pour in the water or stock and bring to a boil then cover and simmer for about 10 minutes, until couscous is al dente and water is absorbed. Place in a large serving bowl, add the grilled vegetables, tomatoes and herbs and toss with the remaining vinaigrette. Serve at room temperature. Reprinted with permission from www.joyofkosher.com.
