The Observant Jew
I Hate Auto-Connect RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ
I
n the “good old days” of typewriters, when you made a mistake you had to throw out the page you were working on, or perhaps use an amazing product like “Liquid Paper” which would you applied with a tiny bottle and brush to gloppily form little moon crater-like surfaces on the page, covering the error which your typewriter would strike with the right key to make your correction. You didn’t let it dry enough? Oops, now you’ve got a mess, PLUS your typewriter keys have white on them. Technology advanced and amazingly, your typewriter could be a correcting one. In that case, a white ribbon came up and the letter struck that, applying a perfect white (and dry) letter, which could then be followed by the correct one. Brilliant! Ah, but technology stands still for no man and we entered the astounding world of the word processor. I bought mine at a thrift shop and amazingly, it had a built-in screen that let you see the words before you hit the print key and started the rat-a-tat typing of the daisy wheel. It even had a disk so you could save your work! Of course, the disks didn’t go to anything else so when Personal Computers, or PCs, came along, you couldn’t bring your work with you from the old Word Processor. But computers were smarter than a simple word processor. They had different programs you could use, one of which

was for writing documents. And then came, “Specllheck!” I mean “Spellcheck!” The birth of ubiquitous red underlines or highlights that alert you to a misspelled word was a boon for poor spellers everywhere. But soon, people realized that it was not a utopian product. Ewe could steel misspell things of they were reel words. (You could still misspell things if they were real words.) You see, while the spellchecker could make sure you knew that you wrote a word it didn’t recognize, it wouldn’t make a suggestion of what you meant. When it began to make suggestions that was great, so long as you knew how to choose the right spelling. I won’t get into grammar detection, where every time you type “there” it suggests, “their,” so, that will save some time… With the arrival of smartphones, though, something new came our way: “Auto-correct.” As people texted and typed on tiny technological tools, they tacitly tapped the wrong keys. Programmers sought to help these poor folks and set up technology that automatically changes the word for you. Sometimes, you don’t even notice it until after you’ve sent the text or e-mail and you are mortician that you missed the change. (*mortified.) As the title of this article alludes, your smartphone can change your words and the meaning of what you’ve tried to convey. Not so smart after all, eh?

As a society, we’ve come to expect these typos, such as the word pwn, as in, “I pwn you,” when winners of online games mean to write, “I own you,” to the losers of some electronic contest. When someone sends us a text that is unintelligible it has almost become a game trying to figure out what they were trying to write. And that’s when I found my inspiration in this irksome technology. “Say what you mean and mean what you say” is a great line, but sometimes we don’t say what we mean. Sometimes we don’t communicate as well as we would like, and sometimes we misspeak. If we were texting it people would be more forgiving. So why not be more forgiving when they’re speaking in person? Understand that sometimes people, like computers, make mistakes. We tolerate it from a phone, why not from a friend? We can take the patience we’ve acquired from looking at these errant text messages and transfer it to the place it’s more needed, to people who don’t have the entire dictionary built into their SIM cards. “Ah,” you’ll say, “but people are much smarter than computers. They’re not supposed to make mistakes.” That may be true, but what we expect from people is much more than we expect from a simple digital device and we should understand
that people DO make mistakes and don’t even have the benefit of someone instantly stepping in to try and make them look better. So, the next time someone says or does something really dumb, just think of them as a “smarter phone,” and know that it’s probably not what they meant to do. Then be patient as they find a way to correct themselves - as soon as they realize what happened.
We should understand that people DO make mistakes.

Israel’s Chief Rabbi Lau Makes Historic Appearance
Rabbi Lau Visits the Conejo Valley and Appeals for Jewish Unity
N
early 500 participants attended what was billed as a “Historic Evening,” featuring an open discussion with the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Dovid Baruch Lau Shlita, on the topic of “Israel and American Jewry.” Hosted by Chabad’s Conejo Jewish Academy at the Westlake Hyatt Hotel in the Conejo Valley, California, the event, held on Wednesday, January 7, was especially unique for the broad cross-section of Jews it attracted from what is a very suburban, and largely secular, region of Southern California. The Chief Rabbi and his wife, Rebbetzin Tziporah Lau, were also greeted by the mayors and councilmembers of the local cities at a preevent reception at the hotel. In his introductory remarks, Rabbi Moshe Bryski, Director of Chabad of the Conejo, hailed the new Chief Rabbi’s efforts to pick up where his illustrious father, Rabbi Yisroel Meir Lau Shlita - who held the same office from 1993 to 2003 - left off. Rabbi Bryski also spoke of the close relationship the former Chief Rabbi had with Chabad and with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who foresaw in 1992 that the elder Rabbi Lau, then Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, would soon be chosen as the Chief Rabbi of the entire country, and advised him to prepare himself accordingly. In the evening’s panel and “Town Hall” style discussion, the first round of questions were presented by moderators, Moshe Bryski and David Suissa, President of the Tribe Media Corporation and a weekly columnist for the Los Angeles Jew-

“You are my brothers, you are my sisters, you are my family,” —Chief Rabbi Lau ish Journal. Questions from the audience were then fielded and presented by Rabbi Yisroel Levine, Director of Chabad of Oak Park. While the Chief Rabbi did not shirk away from any controversial questions presented on such issues as Orthodox serving in the army, conversion, marriage and his approach to non-orthodox movements, it was his emphasis on commonalities and his gentle demeanor that came across most. When asked what he sees as his primary function as Chief Rabbi, Rav Lau answered that it was to teach; to engender

awareness and a love for Torah amongst all Jews. In addressing the topic of the evening, and what message, above all, he wanted audience members to walk away with; the Chief Rabbi spoke of the deep and unshakable bond that exists among all Jews all over the world. “You are my brothers, you are my sisters, you are my family,” he said. “We need each other. The Jews of Israel need the Jews America and the Jews of America need the Jews of Israel... It is only through the recognition and celebration of our unity that we have survived, and that we will continue to survive and also thrive.” Rabbi Dovid Eliezri of Chabad of Yorba Linda helped organize the Chief Rabbi’s tour of Southern California. Rabbi Lau will be delivering a shiur on Sunday at the Bies Midrash of Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon Chabad and will be speaking at Chabad of Yorba Linda on Monday evening.

ormer Orange County resident and Israel Defense Forces lone soldier Sahar Elbaz on Feb. 2 was honored at an elite citation ceremony for his bravery during Operation Protection Edge. Following his graduation from Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School two and a half years ago, Elbaz joined the IDF and was recruited to the combat Givati Brigade. During the recent Gaza War, Sgt. Elbaz came under attack by five heavily armed terrorists. His commander ordered him to take cover and protect himself, yet Elbaz returned fire, killing four of the terrorists. By risking his own life, Sahar’s bravery saved the lives of his fellow soldiers for which he received the IDF’s citation of bravery, “Tzalash HaRamatkal.” Just days prior to the ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Eva Cohen of the LIBI Fund, realized that all the other soldiers

would have their families present at this ceremony, except for Elbaz, whose parents live in Los Angeles. She decided to arrange a surprise visit in tribute to the young soldier. “Shimon and Ilana Elbaz were ecstatic when I called them in Los Angeles and invited them to surprise Sahar for the citation ceremony,” Cohen said. “I am so happy we were able to make sure they were there. They were so proud to see their son’s dedication and bravery recognized by Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon.” A proud father, Shimon Elbaz explained, “The ceremony was amazing. We were really excited to see Sahar. It was a very emotional experience,” said Shimon, adding his gratitude toward LIBI for facilitating the surprise visit. LIBI USA is a non-profit organization that provides for the social, religious and educational needs of Israeli soldiers.

The Fourth Faction RABBI HAROLD RABINOWITZ
T
he Children of Israel had an experience during their sojourn from Egypt that was unique, though one that nations and groups are apt to experience every once in a while: impending doom. Just picture it: a year (more or less) of plagues have brought Pharaoh and Egypt to their knees, and the Israelites have left, taking a good portion of the wealth of Egypt (which they were instrumental in creating) with them, and are making their way to the encounter with the Almighty, to receive the Torah, and to enter and take possession of the land that is their ancestral home. But then something goes horribly wrong. The Egyptians bounce back. Just as the Israelites are camped on the shore of the Sea, here come the Egyptians, their chariots bearing down on them full tilt, armed to the teeth. For the first time, the Israelites are facing disaster, impending doom. But Moshe responds to their fears, and in two verses (14: 13–14), he addresses four possible Israelite reactions to the crisis. According to the Talmud Yerushalami (Ta’anit 2:5), all four of these

responses were considered plausible and reasonable—they represented four factions amid the Israelites who had possible responses to the crisis. Moshe tells them that this time, the response they suggest won’t be necessary; Hashem has something else in mind. Here are those two pesukim: 13. “Don’t be afraid,” said Moshe. “Stand still and behold what Hashem will do to rescue you today. For as you see Egypt today, you will never again see them. 14. The Lord shall fight for you; you need only remain silent.” The Yerushalmi sees each of these four Israelite factions addressed in these verses. One faction wanted to throw themselves into the sea, and die al Kiddush Hashem—as martyrs. “Stand still,” Moshe tells this faction; do not consider martyrdom—not this time. Another faction wanted to fight the Egyptians. This factions was also silenced: “The Almighty will fight for you” Moshe says, and this silences that faction. A third faction wanted to rely on prayer to Hashem

for rescue. But this faction is also silenced: “You need only remain silent,” they are told. But now comes the fourth faction: the Yerushalmi says this group argued that the Israelites should return to Egypt. “Return to Egypt!?” And do what—become slaves again? Remember that these were not groups complaining rebelliously—they were considered reasonable strategies of dealing with the emergency. Arguably, these four attitudes could be seen to characterize Jewish responses to crisis and emergency situation for centuries. It’s impossible that this factions was arguing that the nation should return to Egypt and continue being slaves. What would have been the point of the entire Exodus experience if that were the case? No, this faction argued that the Israelites should return to Egypt—and rule it! That this option was considered a reasonable strategy was nothing less than a vindication of Joseph. For it was Joseph who insisted that the family of Ya’akov Avinu—the entire family—settle in Egypt and begin the fulfillment of the prophecy and promise to Abraham (15:13) that the Israelites would be “strangers in a foreign land, that will enslave and oppress them.” When you think about it, once the identity and position of Joseph was revealed, the family of Ya’akov could have simply competed their original mission, namely, purchase food (to relive the famine in Canaan; perhaps qualifying for an “employee discount”), and return to the land of Canaan. They could then complete the establishment of a kingdom in the land promised to the Patriarchs. It was Joseph who understood that exile—in Egypt; and then in Babylonia; in Northern (Ashkenazic) Europe; in Spain; in Poland and Russia; and finally now in America— is part of the process of “building the nation of Israel.” Exile is not just a travail, a test, a “character builder” or a punishment. Integrating Judaism into a foreign culture is a necessary phase in the development of Am Yisroel—the Jewish People. As the Kotzker Rebbe pointed out, galut (exile) and gilui (revelation) have a common root. It is in exile that we learn the hidden parts of ourselves—our character, our talents; our spiritual assets. Joseph understood this; even the Patriarch Ya’akov wasn’t certain. He needed some assurance from G-d (Bereishis 46:
3–4) that it was right for him to leave Canaan and settle for the long term in Egypt. He was, after all, abandoning the land promised to his family, at a time when he was establishing it as a permanent home, an Israelite kingdom. Yes, the Almighty had… something else in mind, when the Israelites were trapped against the Sea and faced the attacking Egyptian chariots (and what a “something else” that turned out to be!) But it has always surprised me that we have always denigrated the experience of Egypt and all the other exiles.—that we have never appreciated the value of adapting to an unfamiliar environment, integrating Jewish values with those of other cultures, using the intellectual achievements of foreign traditions. Of course, exile is difficult. Living a life in accordance with the tenets and practices of the Torah can be tough in a foreign land. Consider how often these alien environments have turned out being hostile—sometimes very hostile. These experiences have often encouraged the Jewish People to separate themselves from other cultures—even from those in the midst of which we live. Maintaining loyalty to the teachings of Judaism and to the Jewish way of life in an unfriendly culture has not been easy (to put it mildly). When I think about it, it’s amazing that there was that fourth faction—a group that argued for becoming productive, integral members of the non-Jewish (in that case, Egyptian) society, while staying loyal and observant of the institutions of Jewish life. And yet, that’s exactly what we’re experiencing here, isn’t it. The only question is: will we turn this exile into a positive experience—using it to enrich our understanding of Jewish ideology and values? Or will this exile end as have so many others—forcing us to consider the other three strategies our ancestor considered on the banks of the Sea.
As the Kotzker Rebbe pointed out, galut (exile) and gilui (revelation) have a common root. It is in exile that we learn the hidden parts of ourselves—our character, our talents; our spiritual assets.

Purim Guide How to
THE STORY IN A NUTSHELL: The Persian empire of the 4th century BCE extended over 127 lands, and all the Jews were its subjects. When King Ahasuerus had his wife, Queen Vashti, executed for failing to follow his orders, he orchestrated a beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queen—though she refused to divulge the identity of her nationality. Meanwhile, the anti-Semitic Haman was appointed prime minister of the empire.Mordechai, the leader of the Jews (and Esther’s cousin), defied the king’s orders and refused to bow to Haman. Haman was incensed and convinced the king to issue a decree ordering the extermination of all the Jews on the 13th of Adar—a date chosen by a lottery Haman made. Mordechai galvanized all the Jews, convincing them to repent, fast and pray to G-d. Meanwhile, Esther asked the king and Haman to join her for a feast. At the feast, Esther revealed to the king her Jewish identity. Haman was hanged, Mordechai was appointed prime minister in his stead, and a new decree was issued—granting the Jews the right to defend themselves against their enemies. On the 13th of Adar the Jews mobilized and killed many of their enemies. On the 14th of Adar they rested and celebrated.

LISTEN TO THE MEGILLAH
To relive the miraculous events of Purim, listen to the reading of the megillah (theScroll of Esther) twice: once on Purim eve, Wednesday night, March 4, and again on Purim day, March 5. To properly fulfill the mitzvah, it is crucial to hear every single word of the megillah. At certain points in the reading where Haman’s name is mentioned, it is customary to twirl graggers (Purim noisemakers) and stamp one’s feet to “eradicate” his evil name. Tell the children that Purim is the only time when it’s a mitzvah to make noise!
2.
GIVE TO THE NEEDY MATANOT LA’EVYONIM
Concern for the needy is a year-round responsibility; but on Purim it is a special mitzvah to remember the poor. Give charity to at least two (but preferably more) needy individuals on Purim day, March 5. The mitzvah is best fulfilled by giving directly to the needy. If, however, you cannot find poor people, place at least two coins into a charity box. As with the other mitzvahs of Purim, even small children should be taught to fulfill this mitzvah.

3.
SEND FOOD PORTIONS TO FRIENDS MISHLOACH MANOT
On Purim we emphasize the importance of Jewish unity and friendship by sending gifts of food to friends. On Purim day, March 5, send a gift of at least two kinds of ready-to-eat foods (e.g., pastry, fruit, beverage) to at least one friend. Men should send to men, and women to women. It is preferable that the gifts be delivered via a third party. Children, in addition to sending their own gifts of food to their friends, make enthusiastic messengers.
4.
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY
Purim should be celebrated with a special festive meal on Purim day, at which family and friends gather together to rejoice in the Purim spirit. It is a mitzvah to drink wine or other inebriating drinks at this meal.
SPECIAL PRAYERS AL HANISSIM, TORAH READING On Purim we include the Al HaNissim prayer, which describes the Purim miracle, in the evening, morning and afternoon prayers, as well as in the Grace After Meals. In the morning service there is a special reading from the Torah scroll in the synagogue (Exodus 17:8–16).
Pre- and Post-Purim Observances: PURIM CUSTOMS: MASQUERADES AND HAMANTASHEN
TORAH READING OF ZACHOR
A time-honored Purim custom is for children to dress up and disguise themselves—an allusion to the fact that the miracle of Purim was disguised in natural garments. This is also the significance behind a traditional Purim food, the hamantash—a pastry whose filling is hidden within a three-cornered crust.
On the Shabbat before Purim (this year, February 28), a special reading is held in the synagogue. We read the Torah section called Zachor (“Remember”), in which we are enjoined to remember the deeds of (the nation of) Amalek (Haman’s ancestor) who sought to destroy the Jewish people.
THE FAST OF ESTHER To commemorate the prayer and fasting that the Jewish people held during the Purim story, we fast on the day before Purim. This year we fast on Wednesday, March 4. The fast begins approximately an hour before sunrise, and lasts until nightfall.
THE “HALF COINS” MACHATZIT HASHEKEL It is a tradition to give three coins in “half” denominations—e.g., three half-dollar coins—to charity, to commemorate the half-shekel that each Jew contributed as his share in the communal offerings in the time of the Holy Temple. This custom, usually performed in the synagogue, is done on the afternoon of the “Fast of Esther,” or before the reading of the Megillah.
SHUSHAN PURIM In certain ancient walled cities—Jerusalem is the primary example—Purim is observed not on the 14th of Adar (the date of its observance everywhere else), but on the 15th of Adar. This is to commemorate that fact that in the ancient walled city of Shushan, where the battles between the Jews and their enemies extended for an additional day, the original Purim celebration was held on the 15th of Adar. The 15th of Adar is thus called “Shushan Purim,” and is a day of joy and celebration also in those places where it is not observed as the actual Purim. February 10, 2015 •

My Friend, My Rebbe Reflections on the Life and Legacy of R’ Dovid Winiarz z”l (The Facebuker Rebbe) RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ
S
ome people become Rebbes because they are naturalborn leaders. Dovid Winiarz became a Rebbe because there are so many people who need to be led. I won’t write about his early years growing up in Columbus, Ohio because I don’t really know much about that time in his life. I won’t try to tell you what he was like as a boy because I didn’t know him then. This article is not a biography and I didn’t interview people for it. Instead, this is going to be the feelings and insights of one man – me – about the person who became my best friend (as he was for so many others) in just a short time for far too brief a period. I’m not exactly sure when or how I first met Dovid Winiarz. I believe it was on Facebook, (a large social media virtual community) where I was gratified to find someone whose values and hashkafa I shared, who seemed to effervesce with Simchas HaChayim and whose core values were truth, justice, and the Torah way. Like a shepherd watching over his boss’s flocks, Dovid

would gently guide people back to HaShem by sharing words of Torah, jokes, smiles, and answering questions. With a background in Kiruv, he saw Facebook as a dangerous land which he hoped to help people navigate. He knew people were getting lost and would need someone to show them the way back home to their loving Father in Heaven. With guidance from his Rebbi, R’ Reuven Feinstein Shlit”a, and a bracha that he remain safe online (one which he renewed annually) Dovid opened up shop as the Facebuker Rebbe (to stay under the radar of Mark Zuckerberg who had previously shut down Dovid’s page as a Facebook “Rabbi.”) I must have happened across his page and made some comments or sent him messages. He didn’t remember it that way and was sure we must have met offline, in the “real” world, perhaps after he saw a copy of my Migdal Ohr parsha sheet. I don’t recall, but it doesn’t matter. We became close friends instantly. With Dovid, it was always that way because everyone who came in
www.thejewishlink.com

contact with him (well, ALMOST everyone) immediately felt the love he had for them. (There were those in certain online groups who didn’t want guidance, who were angry at HaShem or Yiddishkeit for what some people had done under the guise of “frumkeit,” and though Dovid tried to reach them, they resisted. Even they, however, acknowledge that he was never rude or insulting to them.) He had been a campus rabbi in College of Staten Island, a community of which he was a huge pillar, though I don’t know if everyone would realize to what extent. He and his wife ran a food pantry and when he won a contest at a local ShopRite, that $250 gift card went straight towards that food pantry. He was a known personality in his community who was renowned for his constant smile which he somehow managed to maintain no matter how many people he shared it with. He loved to make people happy and that’s why they loved him. He loved HaShem and wanted people to feel just how loved they were by HaKadosh Baruch Hu. He believed in me. He encouraged me. He made me realize that I could do so much and had so much to offer Klal Yisrael and the world. These are not just my thoughts, but the thoughts of a myriad of friends and acquaintances that he had. I take that back. I don’t know if he had acquaintances. I think once you knew him, you felt he was much closer; your friend, supporter, and staunch ally. Others will tell you stories of his efforts to make people smile, his gloriously excruciating puns and coffee references, with a little bit of politics mixed in. They will talk of his work in helping people find rides, shidduchim, jobs, and how, when he found a product or service that one of his friends provided, he would share that with so many people, always happy to help someone make a buck, and not asking for a cut, even when he needed it himself. He confided in me that when the mortgage market bubble burst, he was one of the casualties. He was pained that he could no longer write the tzedaka checks of the size he used to. But through that pain, he kept smiling. I recall one day when we spoke and he shared a glimpse of the burdens he was carrying. It was a conversation that lasted maybe a minute or two but his biggest concern was, “I’m finding it a challenge to keep smiling today.” But smile he did. Each week, when I sent him a copy of my Parsha sheet, he
would see how many of the items he could share with his diverse group of followers. Sometimes I’d hit a double or a triple, and sometimes he’d message me, “Home run! I posted your Dvar Torah and the story, the Did You Know is going up at 3 o’clock, and I’m going to tweet your Thought of the Week.” Those were times I felt on top of the world. He made me feel like I was special and the fact that he was sharing this Torah with others was of little consequence. I sent him some of my articles and he helped me figure out which ones to put in my book, The Observant Jew. He, through the auspices of Survival Through Education, his kiruv organization which provides books of worth helping the Chosen People choose, helped me publish it, and kept a number of copies to share with people who “won” his online contests, ones they never even realized they’d entered. I was touched to hear from his son, Shaya, that from the day that he received the book, R’ Dovid read one section each week at the Shabbos table for the family. He believed in me, and made me believe in myself more. When the car he was riding in to a Kiruv convention skidded across the median on an icy road and collided with another vehicle, Dovid was called to the Home Office and the truth about just how much he did came out as we, the friends he left behind, compared notes. I’m out of space but not out of memories. The legacy that Dovid Winiarz left with me, which I want to share with all of you, is that each of us can do amazing things, and that we should try to see the amazing side of those around us too. A smile goes a long way, and believing in someone goes even further. We will try to “Stay great,” Dovid. Yehi Zichro Baruch.
The legacy that Dovid Winiarz left with me is that each of us can do amazing things, and that we should try to see the amazing side of those around us too.

Bringing Happiness to Others Lego-Man Meor Cohen Tells His Story
T
hree years ago, when I came to Ezer Mizion’s Donald Berman Rehabilitation Center, they explained to me that I would be working with children who have cancer and with children whose parents have cancer. All I came for was to donate some LEGO but the angels at Ezer Mizion made me see how much more I could do. I was a little frightened at the thought. After all, the word ‘cancer’ is unmentionable and I’d be diving right in. But I know what it means to be a child with a sick parent. Ever since I was 5 years old, my father, may he live and be well, has been a heart patient. For almost thirty years, he has been fighting a variety of illnesses – on chagim, Shabbat, and ordinary weekdays. I never had the security of knowing that just because I saw my father at breakfast would he be there at supper. But he did his absolute best, and even more, to see to it that I had a good childhood. Even at the peak of his illness, it was important to him to be a loving, relevant, and active father. My mother fought like a lioness to make sure that I, her youngest, would not feel deprived. But the hospital visits and constant, pervasive fear did their part and without question, had an effect on me. Through the years, Abba got better and then was sick again, and that cycle kept repeating itself. As a family, we learned to live with this reality. The real burden fell on my mother, who would not give up. Her concern that all of us would continue to live our lives in an emotionally healthy manner became her life mission. Thank G-d, my father continues onward. There are better days and there are worse.

The LEGO Club at Ezer Mizion meets frequently. When I am at the LEGO club with children whose parents are sick, I melt with compassion. I remember myself in their shoes – the fears, the concerns, the feeling that the most prominent figure in your life is fighting for his life…and may lose the battle. It isn’t easy. Each time I relate to a child whose parent died, the challenge intensifies, and with it, the commitment that as long as a child is in my LEGO club, I will make sure he gets what this club was established for – a chance to hold on to the security of a normal world of childhood. Special events are held throughout the year. Before Rosh Hashona, we held a “LEGO in Honey” event at Oranit – a LEGO party for children whose parent has cancer. About thirty families stepped out of their medical nightmare for the moment, sat around tables heaped with LEGO, and built a variegated display of creations. Three lucky winners left with huge LEGO sets and everyone got a standard family

LEGO set as a gift. All this was done thanks to you – you, who contributed money and became a partner with us at Ezer Mizion’s Donald Berman Rehabilitation Center, making this moving event possible. During the party, I stood at the side for a moment and returned in my mind to those days when Ima and I would come home from the hospital after visiting Abba. I would go into my room, sit on the floor, open the LEGO drawer, and immerse myself in my own world, building whimsical creations and dreaming of the days when everything would be okay. Thank you for enabling me to walk down this path each time anew, reliving my own childhood feelings, empathizing with the kids around me and giving, giving , giving enabling them to better cope with the monster named Cancer that has taken over their lives. Lilui nishmas Rabbi Menachem Gottesman
G
immel Shvat marked the shloshim from the passing Rabbi Menachem Gottesman (Aharon Menachem ben Asher Zelig) zt”l. On Thursday night a siyum on shishei sidrei mishna was made lilui nishmaso in the Yeshivas Ohr Yerushalayim Elchanan Gurfinkel Hall. His wife, Rebbentzin Leiba Gottesman ĵĜħģ”ě, several close friends from Los Angeles, Rabbanim from Eretz Yisroel and Los Angeles as well as several handfuls of bachurim all joined together in memory of Rabbi Gottesman. Rabbi Mordechai Sompolinsky shlit”a, a maggid shiur in the yeshiva and long time friend of Rabbi Gottesman, arranged for several bachurim to complete the entire mishnayos by the shloshim. Following the siyum Hagon Rav Moshe Mordechai Chodosh shlit”a as well as Rabbi Chaim Baruch Rubin shlit”a of Los Angeles shared with the participants memories of Rabbi Gottesman’s great personality and achievements for the sake of the Los Angeles community. A central point in their words was his great determination and perseverance against all odds to inject Los Angeles, which was then a spiritual desert, with true Torah values. Although his undertakings ranged all aspects of Jewish life, his main focus was building from the foundation, the young children and ultimately the next generation of frum Jews. Harav Chodosh mentioned how Rav Simcha Wasserman zt”l had always spoken so highly of Rabbi Gottesman and the incredible work he was doing on behalf of klal Yisroel.

Recipe Corner CAMEMBERT HAMANTASCHEN WITH APPLE CINNAMON FILLING With this hamantashen recipe I combined sweet and savory flavors using the classic pairing of cheese and apples. The flavor and texture of the melted camembert works perfectly in this new kind of hamantashen cookie. Times Prep Time : 20 min Cook Time : 15 min Ready Time : 35 min
Servings 18-20 cookies
Ingredients 4 eggs 1 cup oil 1 1/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 1/2 - 3/4 wheel of Les Petite Camembert (NO RIND) 3 teaspoons baking powder 5 1/2 to 6 cups flour 1 tbsp lemon zest 1 small jar of apple cinnamon preserves
Directions Preheat Oven: 350 degrees 1. In a medium mixing bowl, mix together eggs, oil, sugar, cheese and vanilla. Next, add baking powder and flour to the bowl and mix well to combine. Finally, add the lemon zest and give it one more good stir. 2. Knead the dough until smooth. Flour a rolling pin and roll out to roughly 1/8 inch thin on a floured board. 3. Using a round cookie cutter or a drinking glass with a wide opening, cut out circles (use the scraps to make cookies as well, just keep forming into a large ball and rolling out thin and repeat process until dough is done). 4. Put a small dollop of filling in the center of each circle. 5. Have a glass or small bowl of a little bit of cold water near by so that you can dip your fingers in to help fold the dough into three sides over the filling forming a triangle (water acts as a glue to the dough and will help edges stick). Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes on a greased cookie sheet. Reprinted with permission from www.joyofkosher.com.
CHEWY CARAMEL PRALINES Times Ready Time : 30 min Servings 30 pralines Ingredients COATING 10½ ounces chocolate FILLING 1 cup sugar ¾ cup non-dairy whipped topping 1 tablespoon honey 3½ ounces white chocolate (pareve or dairy) ¼ cup chopped Craisins ¼ cup chopped pistachios ¼ cup chopped roasted hazelnuts (optional)
Directions 1. Prepare the coating. Melt chocolate. Fill molds with chocolate up to the top. Wait 2 minutes and turn molds over on a sheet of parchment paper to drain off excess chocolate (the exterior of the chocolate will remain in the mold, creating a cavity in the center for you to fill). Reserve excess chocolate. Clean off the surface of the molds with a spatula and freeze for 10 minutes. Remove molds from freezer. 2. Prepare the filling. Place a saucepan over medium heat. When hot, pour sugar into pan and melt until sugar turns honey-colored. Slowly add whipped topping and honey and stir with a wooden spoon until completely smooth. Remove from heat and add white chocolate. Stir until chocolate melts. Add Craisins, pistachios, and hazelnuts (if using). Cool for 5 minutes. Carefully fill molds almost to the top, but not quite, leaving room to seal the bottom of the pralines with chocolate coating. Freeze for 2 hours. 3. Melt excess chocolate reserved from the first stage of the coating. Remove molds from freezer and top up filling with a thin layer of chocolate that completely covers the filling and creates a base for the praline. Freeze for a half hour and remove pralines from molds. Reprinted with permission from www.joyofkosher.com.
