The Observant Jew

Dandelion Whine RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ

I

nspiration can come from anywhere, even your own backyard. Or, in this case, my front yard. As I came home after shul one Shabbos morning, I noticed some bright yellow flowers on my lawn. “Oh, no!” I thought, “Dandelions!” It reminded me of a story. A man who took great pride in his lawn found himself with a large crop of dandelions. He tried every method he knew to get rid of them. Still they plagued him. Finally he wrote to the Department of Agriculture. He enumerated all the things he had tried and closed his letter with the question: “What shall I do now?” In due course, the reply came: “We suggest you learn to love them.” I wondered. Why DO people hate dandelions? I mean, they are so bright and cheerful, a sunshiny yellow, and they’re so easy to grow, you don’t even have to do anything! If they were buttercups, people wouldn’t mind, but for some reason dandelions make us crazy. The simple answer, of course, is that they are weeds. We know they are and we’ve been hearing people complain about them our entire lives. It’s so simple to us that this is a bad thing to have on your lawn that we know we have to get rid of them without thinking twice. Not one to be satisfied with simple answers, I started asking people, “What’s so bad about dandelions?” “They have really deep roots,” said one person, “and they’re very hard to get 10

rid of.” Another told me, “Left unchecked, they will take over your entire lawn and kill the grass.” A third person pointed out that “they look nice at first, but then they turn ugly pretty quickly and leave you with a big mess.” These are all keen insights into our dandelion distaste, but obviously, I am here to write about Torah culture, not horticulture. What’s up with my preoccupation with dandelions? As I had taken note of them in the beginning, that they looked nice but were really bad, the comparison to aveiros, sins of all types, was instantly apparent. While an unsuspecting person might find the dandelions attractive, the experienced person sees them for what they really are, and that’s the same as sins. So many things we are faced with in life seem to be good, pleasant, and appropriate. By following our natural inclinations, we think we are doing the right thing, because of course our internal compass wouldn’t steer us wrong! That’s why it’s so important to spread the word about the fact that these things are, in fact, wrong, just as everyone knows that dandelions are weeds and weeds are bad. By highlighting and discussing that sins harm us, we can help remove some of the temptation for them because it is common sense and knowledge that they are “bad.” The more I looked, the closer the comparison seemed to be.

“They have deep roots.” - Well, the more one sins, the more firmly they become rooted in his heart, and thus, more difficult to eradicate. “They can take over your entire lawn.” - Yes, sins, too, have a way of taking over a person’s life, tainting his actions, decisions, and thoughts. (In this case, they are in reverse order because that’s how it often works in life. Think about it and you’ll see what I mean.) “They’re only pretty at first.” - Sins look attractive right now, like they’re something we really want, but that only lasts for a fleeting moment. If we wait and look at them in relation to the long-term effect they will have, we will see how disgusting and troublesome they truly are. Now, for a moment, let’s go back to the story above. After trying so many unsuccessful things, the man went to the top experts in the field to ask their opinion. How could he rid himself of this nuisance? The response he got was that it was of no use; he might as well just accept his fate and enjoy it. This is a common tool of the Yetzer Hara. When a person sins, the Yetzer Hara tells him, “That’s it, you’re a sinner now.

Why bother trying to change? This is who you are!” Unlike the experts in our story, though, our Torah does offer advice for ridding ourselves of sin. Of course, the best way to avoid sin is by recognizing it from the beginning as something unwanted. However, if it happens, try not to let it go unchecked and have time to develop roots. Keep the sin separate from your life, recognize that it was a mistake, not your identity, and keep working to wipe it out. If you keep at it, you will achieve the clear, luxuriant growth you’re seeking, and be able to handle any other challenges that might spring up.

The best way to avoid sin is by recognizing it from the beginning as something unwanted.

here was once a man who had twenty-four thousand disciples. He taught them to love, but their love was too absolute, too true, to be loving. They died, and their death spawned a period of mourning that darkens our calendar to this very day. This man had one disciple who devoted his entire life — literally his every minute — to the pursuit of truth. Yet his truth was true enough to love. He, too, passed from this world, and the anniversary of his passing is celebrated as a day of joy and festivity to this very day. This, in a word, is the story of Lag BaOmer — the story of Rabbi Akiva and his greatest disciple, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

A CELEBRATED DEATH The 18th of Iyar is Lag BaOmer — the 33rd day of the OmerCount which spans the seven weeks from Passover to Shavuot. Two joyous occasions are associated with this day. During the Omer period we mourn the deaths of 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who died in a plague because, as theTalmud informs us, “They did not conduct themselves with respect for each other”; Lag BaOmer is the day on which the plague ended and the dying ceased. Lag BaOmer is also the anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Akiva’s greatest disciple, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Before his death (many years later,

without connection to the plague), Rabbi Shimon referred to the day of his passing as “the day of my happiness” and instructed his disciples that it be observed each year as a day of joyous celebration. Why is the passing of Rabbi Akiva’s other disciples mourned as a national tragedy, while the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai is remembered with celebration and joy? Indeed, the very same day that celebrates the end of the dying of Rabbi Akiva’s disciples, celebrates the death of his greatest disciple! To unravel the paradox of Lag BaOmer, we must first examine the root of the disrespect that caused the plague amongst Rabbi Akiva’s disciples. Rabbi Akiva taught that “Love your fellow as yourself is a cardinal principle in Torah”; indeed, this is the most famous of his teachings. One would therefore expect that Rabbi Akivas disciples would be the foremost exemplars of this principle. How was it that they, of all people, were deficient in this area? But their very diligence in fulfilling the precept “Love your fellow as yourself ” was their undoing. Our sages have said that “Just as every person’s face differs from the faces of his fellows, so, too, every person’s mind differs from the minds of his fellows.” When the twenty-four-thousand disciples of Rabbi Akiva studied their master’s teachings, the result was twenty-fourthousand nuances of understanding, as the same concepts were assimilated by twenty-four-thousand minds -- each unique and

distinct from its 23,999 fellows. Had Rabbi Akiva’s students loved each other less, this would have been a matter of minor concern; but because each disciple loved his fellows as he loved himself, he felt compelled to correct their erroneous thinking and behavior, and to enlighten them as to the true meaning of their master’s words. For the same reason, they found themselves incapable of expressing a hypocritical respect for each others’ views when they sincerely believed that the others’ understanding was lacking, even in the slightest degree. The greater a person is, the higher are the standards by which he is judged; in the words of our sages, “With the righteous, G-d is exacting to a hairsbreadth.” Thus, what for people of our caliber would be considered a minor failing had such a devastating effect upon the disciples of Rabbi Akiva.

THE THIRTEENTH YEAR But there was one disciple of Rabbi Akiva who learned to overcome the pitfalls of uncompromising love and uncompromising truth, as exemplified by the following incident in the life of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai: The Talmud relates that when the Roman rulers of the Holy Land placed a price on the heads of Rabbi Shimon and his son Rabbi Elazar, they hid in a cave for twelve years. During this time, they spent every minute of their day studying Torah. When they emerged from the cave, they were shocked to discover people plowing and sowing: how could people set aside the eternal life that is Torah and occupy their days with the transitory life of the material? So intense was their wrath at such folly that whatever met with their burning glance went up in flames. Proclaimed a voice from heaven:“Have you come out to destroy My world? Return to your cave!” Rabbi Shimon’s thirteenth year of study, while increasing his knowledge and appreciation of the truth of Torah, also taught him the value of endeavors other than his own. Now, wherever he went, his look would heal rather than destroy. The 4,000-year history of Jewish learning has known many great and diligent students of Torah; yet none epitomized the absolute devotion to the pursuit of the divine truth to the extent exemplified by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Throughout the writings of our sages, his example is cited as the ultimate case of torato um’nato, “one whose study of Torah is his sole vocation.” Certainly, then, Rabbi Shimon’s commitment to truth was no less absolute than that of Rabbi Akiva’s other disciples. Yet his truth was true enough to love. In his thirteenth year in the cave, he attained a dimension of the divine truth that tolerates, indeed embraces, the many and diverse avenues of connection to G-d which the Creator has provided to a humanity whose minds, characters and temperaments are as diverse as their number. In his thirteenth year in the cave, Rabbi ShiMay 9, 2014

323-965-1544

mon attained a level of truth in which he could utterly devote himself to the eternal life that is Torah, and advocate such devotion for everyone else, and at the same time appreciate and respect the path of those who serve G-d via the temporal life of material endeavors. So the very same day that celebrates the end of the plague amongst Rabbi Akiva’s disciples also celebrates the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. The Chassidic masters explain that the passing of a righteous person marks the point at which “all his deeds, teachings and works” attain the pinnacle of fulfillment and realization and the point of their most powerful influence upon our lives. And the deeds, teaching and works of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai are the ultimate rectification of Rabbi Akiva’s disciples’ tragic failure to achieve the proper synthesis of love and truth that would make their love true and their truth loving.

AS YOURSELF As noted above, it is only among men of the caliber of Rabbi Akiva’s disciples that such a failing could bode such devastating results. But our sages chose to record this story for posterity and fix it in our lives with a series of laws that govern our behavior in the weeks between Passover and Shavuot each year. Obviously, we, too, have something to learn from what happened to Rabbi Akiva’s disciples. The lesson is twofold: we must learn from their virtues as well as from their mistakes. We must learn to care enough for our fellow man not to indulge his errors and accommodate his failings. This might be the easiest and most socially comfortable way to behave, but, rather than tolerance, it bespeaks an indifference toward his or her welfare. On the other hand, we must never allow our commitment to his betterment to lessen in the slightest our respect and esteem toward him, no matter how misguided and unresponsive he might be. If this seems paradoxical, it is. But the ability to embrace this paradox is at the very heart of the Torah’s commandment to “Love your fellow as yourself.” For in regard to ourselves, it is a paradox with which we are quite comfortable — every psychologically healthy person loves himself unconditionally and, at the same time, incessantly strives to improve himself. This paradox we must also cultivate in our relationship with others: on the one hand, we must never compromise our efforts to improve our fellow man out of respect for his views and feelings; on the other hand, we must never allow these efforts to compromise our love and respect for him. For to succumb to either compromise is to fail to love him as we love ourselves -- a principle which Rabbi Akiva considered fundamental to G-d’s blueprint for life and of which Hillel said: “This is the entire Torah; the rest is commentary.” Courtesy of MeaningfulLife.com

The Parchment of Rebuke That Came Home BY ARYEH SAVIR TAZPIT NEWS AGENCY

R

abbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman, Dean of the Migdal Ohr Institutions, sat in his home in Migdal Ha’emek, bewilderedly reexamining the piece of Torah parchment he was given. Cut by a Nazi almost 70 years ago from a Torah scroll in an Eastern European synagogue, the sacred parchment was used by the Luftwaffe officer as a wrapping for his ID card during World War II. How did Rabbi Grossman come into the possession of such a unique and shocking piece of history? Moti Dotan, the Head of the Lower Galilee Regional Council, had recently returned from a ceremony honoring of the 25th anniversary of the twin cities pact between the Regional Council and the Hanover district in Germany. Dotan was approached at the conclusion of the event by a member of the Hanover District Council. “My father, Werner Herzig, died a few weeks ago,” said the man. “Before his death he said he wanted to share with me a secret. He told me he had fought in World War II and told me about his involvement in those awful crimes, such as his participation in the burning of a synagogue on the Russian front.‘It’s important for me to tell you this, because today there are those who don’t believe that it happened’ he told me.” Dotan relates that Herzig junior gave him the ID document and parchment and asked him to locate a holy man in the Galilee and present it to him. “I thought of the holy work that Rabbi Grossman does, and that he was the most suitable person to receive the document and parchment,” says Dotan. “When I came to him to give him the document, I shared with him the story. As he held the parchment tears started to flow from his eyes,” recalls Dotan. He said that Rabbi Grossman symbolizes to him all that is good in Judaism,

and will make proper use of the item. Rabbi Grossman held the piece of parchment and read from the text. The parchment is from the book of Deuteronomy, in the weekly portion of “Ki Tavo.” He read: “...and distress which your enemies will inflict upon you, in your cities... Then the Lord will bring upon you and your offspring uniquely horrible plagues, terrible and unyielding plagues, and evil and unyielding sicknesses... Also, the Lord will bring upon you every disease and plague which is not written in this Torah scroll, to destroy you. And you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of the heaven for multitude” (Deuteronomy 28, 57-62). These verses are known as the verses of admonishment. Rabbi Grossman is convinced that this is a “Supreme message of Divine providence. After 60 years, this document arrives in Israel,

www.thejewishlink.com

wrapped in these words of scolding, and is calling on us ‘to awaken.’ After all, the German could have cut the parchment from any of the Five Books of Moses, and he specifically cut out the section that speaks suffering, servitude and then of redemption,” said Rabbi Grossman. Rabbi Grossman has shown the ID book and parchment to young people, and tells of the great excitement it causes. “It’s a tangible object, which you can see with your own eyes. You can see here the embodiment of evil; how after the destruction of a synagogue, this man had the audacity to enter and cut from the Torah scroll, only because he thought that the parchment was a suitable way to preserve his document.” Rabbi Grossman has vowed to continue to visit schools and young people with the document and to share this awe striking story with them.

Mother’s Day for the Working Mom RACHEL STERN SIEGMAN

A

s mothers across the United States receive the obligatory macaroni necklaces and breakfast in bed from their adoring children, many women still struggle to find a receptive work environment which enables them to thrive both as parents and professionals. Over the sea in Israel, a mere 31% of managerial positions in the country’s leading companies are held by women. Despite this gloomy statistic, there are companies who are positively brimming with female leadership including the leading Golan Heights Winery. In addition to the winery being home to Israel’s first female winemaker, three of the prominent members have shattered the famed glass ceiling and risen to the top, not only as women but as proud mothers. Anat Levi, CEO of the Winery met the rigorous challenge of acquiring her leading position while raising four children. She was selected as the only woman to compete against eight men in a grueling regime of diagnostic tests and interviews. When she proved to be the best candidate for the job, Levi became the winery’s first female CEO and an example of one of Israel’s leading female businesswomen. Yet for many women, the obstacle of landing a job is only half the challenge. Once in the position, mothers constantly have to balance between a screaming child and a pressing deadline or between birthday parties and business meetings. This arduous task is enough to leave many in tears by the end of Harry Chapin’s heartrending “Cats and the Cradle” and often a tug-of war takes place in a mother’s conscious. As the stress of conflicting priorities may become monumental to mothers, Debby Shoham, head of the wine training department and mother of a four year old, explains that it all comes down to gaining support of your loved ones.“Realistically you must understand the combination of roles you have and cannot 24

“You need to work hard, be honest, and make it clear what is important in life and what is secondary.” get bogged down by guilt for spending time at the office.” On the flip side, it is important to clearly define one’s priorities. Levi explains that from day one in her position she never shied away from her role as mother. “I announced publically that family comes first and my colleagues in the office understood, even though that sometimes means I have to leave earlier.” Yael Gai, international sales and marketing manager and mother of four, explains that taking a leadership role in her career has positively affected her four children. “My career, as well as my husband’s, has shown our children that if you invest and do things seriously you can succeed and achieve in life. I already see the fruits of this today reflected in my children, in the manner they go about www.thejewishlink.com

their studies and the additional responsibilities they take upon themselves to reach their own significant achievements.” Shoham adds that success at work can lead to success as a mother, and she concludes, “a happy mother makes a happy child.” Gai contends that in order to make it in the work force you have to have drive and perseverance. “If you really want it you cannot give up,” explains Gai, “You cannot put yourself and your needs last, but must always look where to balance the important things. Choose personally and decide what points are significant to you and don’t give up on them.” While Mother’s Day only comes around once a year, take this opportunity to show appreciation for the women who are striving to reach the top as both mothers and professionals. Gai has her fingers crossed for a bottle of her favorite Yarden Pinot Noir, a home cooked meal and some quality family time. No matter how you plan on celebrating the day, allow Gai’s message to permeate your thoughts, as she warns, “do not give up on yourselves, because that is a guaranteed recipe for failure.” Levi agrees and adds, “you need to work hard, be honest, above all else be a human being and make it clear what is important in life and what is secondary.”

Elan Carr for Congress

Jewish Community Leaders Support Elan Carr for U.S. Congress

“The United States must stand strongly in support of Israel.” 32

A

group of Jewish Community leaders and activists met with Deputy District Attorney Elan Carr who they feel is the most experienced and qualified Candidate running to replace Congressman Henry Waxman who is retiring. Elan has outlined his positions on Taxes, Jobs, Education, Healthcare, Immigration, National Defense, Environment, etc. to view his positions on these important issues visit www.ElanCarrForCongress.com. ABOUT ELAN CARR Elan’s mother was a young girl in Iraq when Iraqi authorities arrested her father for being Jewish. She remembers having to leave him behind as she, her mother, and her baby brother fled to Iswww.thejewishlink.com

rael as refugees. Like so many other Israelis, Elan’s mother, his step-father, and his fatherin-law each proudly wore the uniform of the Israel Defense Forces and defended, by arms, the right of Israel to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people. During the 10 months when he lived and worked in Israel, Elan saw firsthand the ravages of suicide bus bombings, watched as Hizbullah’s rockets rained down on northern Israel, and witnessed the angst felt by Israelis of all ages who struggled daily with existential threats to their families and their country. When he served as a U.S. Army officer in Iraq, Elan helped to lead an antiterrorism team in life-saving missions

throughout the country. He wrote classified reports on terrorist courses of action and how to defend against them. And then, when his combat tour of duty in Iraq was extended, he prosecuted terrorists who had attacked and injured Americans. When Elan visits Sderot, as he has done on multiple occasions, he brings a personal understanding of what it is like to hear the scream of a rocket’s tail fin only seconds before feeling the May 9, 2014

ground heave beneath one’s feet from the terrible force of the explosion. As the current international president of Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi), Elan has been a leader in opposing efforts to delegitimize Israel on college campuses. He has made it one of AEPi’s top policy priorities to stand strongly with Israel and to oppose the notorious Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movements that are prevalent on college campuses today.

By training hundreds of students to become leaders of the proIsrael movements on their campuses, AEPi under my leadership has played a central role in opposing and often defeating anti-Israel legislation and activities on campuses throughout North America and Europe. Elan believes that the United States must stand strongly in support of Israel. He also believes that support for Israel must be a core principle of U.S. foreign policy, must be bi-partisan and unwavering, and must not depend in any way on which Israeli political party is democratically elected to lead Israel’s government. Elan is married to Dr. Dahlia Carr, a medical doctor specializing in rheumatology and a lifelong Democrat. As a physician in private practice, Dahlia is a small business owner who pays rent and creates jobs in the 33rd District. Having watched reimbursement rates to doctors drop and many doctors drop an increasing number of health insurance plans, Dahlia is deeply concerned about the future of health care in America, and looks forward to joining with Elan in making our health care system work for everyone. Elan and Dahlia live in Los Angeles with their two daughters – Hannah and Rachelle – and have just welcomed their newest addition to the family, a son. The California Primary Election will be held on June 3, 2014 which is Erev Shavuos. It is recommended that Jewish Voters obtain an absentee ballot and vote in advance so as not to miss voting for all the important candidates and issues in this Election.

The Marriage Seminar West Comes to LA R abbi Shafier will be in LA from May 8th-18th to promote the Marriage Seminar. The Marriage Seminar is Rabbi Shafier’s response to the reality of the unfortunate spread of divorce and troubled marriages in our communities. The Seminar seeks to address two pivotal questions -- what is causing this sudden epidemic, and more significantly, what can be done about it? In other words, how can we ensure that our marriages are as good as they can be? Regrettably, there isn’t one “cause” for the breakdown in relationships, and many of the reasons are deeply rooted and not easily changed. Traits such as self-centeredness, unrealistic expectations, and a lack of maturity and self-control aren’t things that are quickly changed. Nevertheless, attitudes can be altered, and with fo-

cused work many challenging marriages can be greatly improved. The Marriage Seminar was produced by Rabbi Shafier to address these realities and remedy the issues that they sprout.

Thursday, May 8th- 10th, Shabbos Parshas Behar “The Marriage Seminar” Series Weekend at Shaarey Zedek, 12800 Chandler Blvd. Sunday, May 11th “The Marriage Seminar” Full Day Event at Bait Aaron, Torah Outreach Center, 301 South La Peer Drive Wednesday, May 15th “Building a Focused Family in a Distracted Generation” sponsored by the Yachad Kollel, 8:30 pm at the Torat Hayim Simcha Hall, 1026 South Robertson Blvd.

Cheder Menachem in the Geography Bee F

rom the mighty Rocky Mountains to the luscious greens of the tropics, our world is quite a sight to see. Capturing these treasures, ostensibly a simple task, is in fact a difficult mission requiring much effort. The students of Cheder Menachem of Los Angeles had the unique opportunity to compete in a statewide competition that explores the world in which we live in and appreciate the wonders of Hashem. Our school wide competition has led to the only Los Angeles county student qualifying to compete in the state finals, located in Fresno, California. Each teacher, student, and administrator, is extremely proud of Ashie Denebeim’s efforts and accomplishments. As arrangements were being made for Ashie to attend the statewide National Geography Bee, his father, Rabbi Yonason Denebeim, a Chabad emissary in Palm Springs called his colleague, the local Chabad rabbi in Fresno, Rabbi Zirkind. Rabbi Zirkind was ecstatic to hear, as Chabad of Fresno is connected to the National Geography Bee in more ways than one. Sean Boyd, the National Geographic coordinator in Fresno, attends the local Chabad, where Rabbi Zirkind is the practicing Rabbi. Mr. Boyd noted to Rabbi Zirkind how incredible it is, how the only qualifying student from Los Angeles County attends Cheder Menachem of Los Angeles.

US Congress Lauds EFRAT’s Saving Lives Mission in Meetings with Dr. Eli Schussheim

rominent members of the U.S. Congress expressed their admiration of EFRAT’s winning formula to save Israeli babies from abortion in circumstances to its founder Dr. Eli Schussheim. EFRAT steps in where the mother is facing a dilemma of whether to continue with her pregnancy, but does not feel financially or emotionally able to do so. Dr. Eli Schussheim, President of Israel’s Committee for the Rescue of Israel’s Babies-EFRAT, visited the Unites States and met in the Capitol with four Senators and nine members of the House of Representatives. Dr. Schussheim, a leading surgeon in Israel, who has dedicated his life’s work to EFRAT completely on a voluntary basis, focused his attention in all of his meetings on Capitol Hill to the work and effort his organization is devoted to in order to save lives of so many. EFRAT assists thousands of women annually who choose to continue their pregnancy with monthly food packwww.thejewishlink.com

ages and basic baby equipment such as cribs, strollers, baby baths and layettes. With over 3,000 trained volunteers are constantly available to provide women facing an unwanted pregnancy with one-on-one counseling and emotional support backed by EFRAT’s assurance of physical assistance. Speaking with Senator Rob Portman, Dr. Schussheim addressed the many lives EFRAT had managed to save through its programs. The Senator expressed his deep appreciation and offered his support of expanding a similar approach to the U.S. and the world. After a brief introduction by Dr. Schussheim about the work of EFRAT, Rep. Vicky Hartzler said, “It is so encouraging and inspiring the work you have done. I am so encouraged to know that you’re leading the charge in Israel and you are having success and we just need to multiply this in both our countries and around the world.” Senator Mike Lee lauded the work

being done by EFRAT and thanked Dr. Schussheim for the “great work.” “I commend you for what you are doing,” said Senator Lee. “Anything that encourages people to choose life over death is a good thing.” Rep. Steve Womack said, “We are very proud of the work of EFRAT, and Dr. Schussheim is just a tremendous example of the great work that is being performed by the organization. I’m very, very proud.” “Thank you for your commitment,” said Senator Tim Scott after receiving a presentation by Dr. Schussheim.

“When you think about the fact that over 56 Million folks haven’t stepped on soil because of their lost lives, here is an opportunity for us to take a positive stand and a strong position in protecting life.” In a lengthy sit down, Rep. Paul C. Broun alluded to the effort in stopping abortion, saying his first bill he introduced in Congress was ‘The Sanctity of Human Life Act,’ and is also the first bill Dr. Broun introduces each Congress. Dr. Broun who’s now a candidate for US Senate pledged to continue introducing the Human Life Act as the very first bill

if he obtains that seat. “It is important for us to understand that life is precious and it is part of our Judea-Christian principles that has made this country so great, “he said. Rep. Broun also spoke about his love and deep connection to Israel. “I support Israel because of a promise that G-d made to Abraham - our father,” he told Dr. Schussheim. You are one of the few from your community that I’ve hear speak this way,” Senator Joe Manchin told Dr. Schussheim after a brief introduction. The senator who describes himself as pro-life expressed his willingness to visit EFRAT facilities when he visits Israel in the near future. Dr. Schussheim also met with Representatives John C. Fleming, Andy Harris, Joseph R. Pitts, Sean Duffy and Rob Woodall. Former Vice Presidential candidate and chairman of the House Budget Committee Rep. Paul Ryan also took time out of packed schedule to praise Dr. Schussheim and was visibly moved when he reviewed the photos of the children born because of EFRAT. Closing the spree of meetings was Representative Randy Weber who said the work of EFRAT cannot be put in words. “Saving lives is a G-d given instinct,” he said. EFRAT is making a real difference in the lives of real people.” At the various meetings on The Hill, Dr. Schussheim proudly stated that in all of his years running EFRAT, not a single woman has ever regretted having her child, each of whom was saved for a mere $1,800 worth of supplies and equipment. Since 1977 EFRAT saved the lives of over 50,000 Jewish children in Israel. EFRAT’s goal is to inform women faced with an unwanted pregnancy that there are choices. Not all unwanted pregnancies must end with an abortion. Since 1977, EFRAT has saved over 50,000 children. Through a combination of education and economic assistance, EFRAT has helped establish a new generation of Jewish families.

Featuring What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan? Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.
