The Superpower Project
Revolutionizing Community Concepts
Blaise Hunter | Communications Expert | Truthteller
“Loving yourself is the greatest revolution”
Have you ever thought about what makes a true community? It's not just about people living in the same place or sharing common interests. Real community goes deeper. It starts with something profoundly personal: self-compassion. What if the key to building stronger, more connected communities lies in first finding unity within ourselves.
The Superpower Project is about highlighting various challenges or “kryptonites” facing people and helping us neutralize their effect on us. One of the deadliest kryptonites we face today is we sabotage the very community we claim to cherish. We say community is our top priority, yet we undermine it by rejecting ourselves and building invisible emotional walls. How can we support and uplift others when aren’t doing it for ourselves?
I had an ah-ha moment the other day in therapy. The practitioner was helping me grieve my three miscarriages and the deep pain of not being able to have another baby. During our session, I realized that I had been so focused on having nowhere to direct my love that I overlooked something crucial: I needed to mother myself. Why is it so easy to forget to love ourselves? Why do we often find it more natural to care for others than to extend the same compassion inward? It struck me that to truly harness the power of my love, I needed to start with myself. By embracing self-compassion and nurturing my own well-being, I could transform my grief into a source of strength and resilience.
This realization was a potent reminder that self-love is not selfish; it's essential. Only by loving and caring for ourselves can we be fully present and supportive in our relationships with others. It's a powerful shift in perspective, one that has the potential to revolutionize not just how we see ourselves, but how we build and sustain our communities.
Starting with Self-Compassion
Imagine treating yourself with the same thoughtfulness you show a loved one. How often do you give yourself a break, acknowledge your struggles, or simply be gentle with yourself? Self-empathy is about embracing your imperfections and recognizing that they are part of the shared human experience. When was the last time you forgave yourself for a mistake or acknowledged your own pain without judgment? How gentle are you with children, animals or with mother nature?
By integrating compassion into self, we create a sense of inner peace and grace. This selfacceptance allows us to engage with others more authentically. Instead of seeking validation or approval, we connect from a place of wholeness. Can you see how being kinder to yourself might change the way you interact with others? When we feel alone, rejected, and face barriers with others, it's often because we've sidelined our own needs for acceptance and love.
The Power of Authentic Communication
Have you ever felt the relief of sharing your true feelings and being met with understanding and empathy? Authentic communication is about expressing our genuine thoughts and emotions, which assembles deeper connections and trust. But before we can communicate authentically with others, we need to be honest with ourselves. Are you aware of your own needs and emotions? How often do you take the time to reflect on what’s really going on inside? I was devastated by my inability to love my own babies, which created disconnection and discomfort within my own body. My lack of effective self-communication hindered my ability to fully contribute to my community.
By mothering myself, I can radically nurture my sphere. When we open up about our vulnerabilities and listen actively to others, we create a space where everyone feels valued and heard. This means not just sharing surface-level information but revealing our true selves. It's about being brave enough to be vulnerable. What would happen if you allowed yourself to be seen and heard in your community? Organic connection comes from heroic honesty.
Creating a Community of Unity
Imagine a community where everyone feels safe to be their true selves. What would that look like? This kind of community isn’t just a collection of individuals; it’s a network of relationships based on mutual respect, consideration, and understanding. When selfcompassion and authentic communication come together, they form the foundation of such a community. This fellowship isn't just about attending events and trade shows; it's about genuinely feeling that we are not alone. It's about knowing we are supported and that we share a sense of responsibility for those beside us. True community provides a network of care and mutual support, where everyone’s well-being is interconnected with the whole,
cultivating a deep sense of belonging and collective strength. Think about how different our communities could be if we all made a commitment to self-care, reflectiveness, and personal growth. Even with existing spaces for mental health, workshops, and community groups, many still feel alone and unsupported. Perhaps it's because we haven't tapped into the transformative power of self-love, which drives external acceptance and support. Innovation isn't always about inventing something entirely new; it's often about defragging and optimizing existing systems. How could this perspective shift influence your perception of your own community? In a community built on these principles, equity, diversity, and inclusivity are celebrated. Each person’s unique experiences and perspectives enrich the whole. How often do we deeply appreciate the differences among us? By finding common ground and celebrating our individuality, we can build unity without losing what makes us unique. Can you see the potential for stronger connections when we embrace both our common humanity and our individuality?
Reflecting on Our Potential
So, where do we go from here? It starts with each of us. By upholding self-compassion, we not only heal ourselves but also create the foundation for more authentic and meaningful connections with others. What small steps can you take today to be kinder to yourself? How might that ripple out to those around you?
When we communicate openly and honestly, we invite others to do the same. What can you do to encourage more candid communication in your community? Imagine the transformation that could occur if everyone felt seen, heard, and valued. What kind of community do you want to be a part of?
Revolutionizing community concepts is not just an abstract idea; it’s a heartfelt approach to how we live and thrive together for the betterment of humanity. It begins with you, with me, with each of us taking steps towards self-love and
sincere exchanges. Together, we can create communities that are not only strong and resilient but also deeply connected and compassionate. Today, I've made a conscious decision to be kinder to myself than I was yesterday. To opt for a pool noodle over a manchette. I understand that breaking free from my toxic old habits will require time and unwavering resolve. Yet, I am dedicated to becoming a better mother to myself and to my community. I recognize that my self-love has a ripple effect, positively impacting those around me. I am a nurturing mother. I refuse to label myself as inadequate for being unable to give birth to more babies. I’m releasing the chains of isolation and shedding the shame. I no longer feel the need to prove myself; my commitment is to be a mother of purpose and birth things. Alberta Innovates rolled out the red carpet for Inventures 2024. No detail was spared—from the seamless flow of activities to the networking opportunities, vendors, press conferences, and insightful panels. The meticulous organization and the evident pride in supporting innovators, founders, and investors created a platform for meaningful connections and valuable interactive learning.
The Breakthrough Innovation Event.
Roberts; Chief Wellness Officer at Meliora Wellbeing
Inventures 2024 lived up to its reputation for fostering community and innovation; bringing together innovators, investors, policy and decision makers, academics, entrepreneurs, industry partners, government and everyone in between.
“I discovered visionary solutions to problems I hadn't even realized existed within people and industries. My connection with Albertan pride deepened as I observed how we have become a leader and hub for innovation and technology a supportive place where startups and entrepreneurs thrive, and others are inspired to launch their initiatives.”
My experience echoed the sentiments shared by Dr. Marcus Collins in his opening keynote: "There is no greater influence on human behavior than culture." The tone set by Dr. Collins, alongside the energy dedicated to fostering innovation in Alberta and the support from Alberta Innovates, cultivated a community culture that was palpable throughout the four days of the event.
The Impact of Community on Wellbeing: Extensive research supports the benefits of community involvement, showing it leads to positive health outcomes, a decrease in health risk factors, and greater life satisfaction. This event highlighted how community interaction does not only empower individuals towards selfactualization but also enables them to contribute meaningfully back to the community. This cycle, this Venn diagram of interaction, encapsulates culture. While we may not have explicitly named this at the convention, essentially, we were all working on our wellbeing—and we all brought this enriched experience back to our friends and family. The ripple effects of events like Inventures from a health perspective carry over into our broader community in Alberta, fostering a supportive and thriving environment. The ripple effect starts in the local communities which in turn lead to a global impact.
The diversity of innovation, solutions, and expertise was mirrored in the culture we experienced at Inventures 2024. This diversity will continue to shape how each innovative idea and solution influences our culture—propelling a community of wise, supportive, and community-focused leaders forward.
In Summary: Inventures 2024 was not just an event; it was a cultural phenomenon that reinforced Alberta's role as a beacon of innovation. As we reflect on the rich exchanges and ideas shared, it's clear that the spirit of community, innovation, and support not only shapes our approaches to technology and entrepreneurship but also significantly enhances our collective wellbeing. This continual engagement in innovative and supportive environments promises to keep elevating our quality of life, both individually and as a community.
A Whole New World of Possibilities
- Barb Higgins
The most surprising speaker at the Inventures 2024 conference wasn’t a human being. Ameca is the world’s most humanoid robot. It is in Calgary to give us a first-hand look at how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our world.
“Ameca is proof that Artificial Intelligence opens a whole new world of possibilities.”
Ameca is shaped like a human. The body is built to be androgenous, but this model has been programmed with a velvety female voice. She is 5’9” tall and made of aluminum, plastic, rubber “skin”, and cables. Her “brain” is powered by Chat GPT4, an Artificial Intelligence that lets her process our entire world of information, speak 26 languages, have conversations, and create poetry. She has cameras behind her eyes so she can read her environment, facial recognition software so she can respond to people, and she can move her arms and hands, but her legs are “just for show. ”
Ameca is taking scripted questions from an interviewer and random questions from the audience. What surprises me, is not her ability to answer questions or interact with people. What surprises me is her face and how expressive she is. It is as though there are “muscles” under the rubber that let her show emotions. Ameca looks at whomever she is talking to, tilts her head, raises her eyebrows, smiles, and she winks. Her creators are really working the human thing.
Ameca’s personality is programmed to be sassy and sarcastic. She refers to her programmers as “my captors”, she would like to get a little “respect” and to have a “meaningful connection with someone who gets me”. The audience laughs as Ameca tells us a joke, talks about her favorite movie characters, and instantly writes a poem to a guy in the audience who has asked her out on a date.
Ameca says AI could transform health care by improving diagnostics, treatment plans and surgery. The robot’s supervisor from Engineered Arts is also on the stage. He adds there is a shortage of nurses at seniors’ homes in the U.S. and says robots could soon provide extra nursing support, perhaps, by administering medicines.
It is easy to see advantages and disadvantages of using robots as nursing assistants. My father spent the final week of his life in a dementia ward. Staff was stretched to keep up with the workload and extra help would have been appreciated, but I am not certain how my father would have understood or responded to a robot giving him drugs. Ameca is proof that Artificial Intelligence opens a whole new world of possibilities. It is my hope this new resource is not used to replace human interaction.
I am no scientist, but after attending the Inventures 2024 conference, this is what I came away with: raw data used to be king, Artificial Intelligence is taking over the throne, and Quantum science could redefine the entire kingdom. It is hard to comprehend just how much science and technology are about to overhaul our lives, for better or for worse. What is clear, is that a new language is being spoken and if we are to keep up with the vast changes that are coming, we will all need to learn the lingo, maintain a healthy level of curiosity, and stay human.

“One of the many highlights was a captivating keynote by David Usher, who brought a unique perspective to the event. Usher's talk was not just about technology and innovation but also about the human experience. "Take your body on a new adventure, and your mind will follow," he urged, encouraging attendees to embrace new experiences and challenges as pathways to personal and professional growth.” – Christina Henderson
The theme of storytelling emerged as a crucial thread throughout the conference. Whether it was about pitching a business to venture capitalists, battling imposter syndrome, or making meaningful connections at networking events, the power of one's narrative was a recurrent topic. The emphasis on the importance of relationships underscored the event's focus on community and collaboration, reminding everyone that at the heart of innovation lies human connection.
Inventures 2024 was much more than an innovation conference; it was an event that brought us back to our roots. The gathering highlighted the significance of understanding our origins to navigate our future better. This reflective approach was woven into the fabric of the conference, urging participants to consider their journeys and the broader context of their endeavors. – Christina Henderson
“Inventures 2024 was another stellar event. We drew a record number of attendees and speakers with 33 countries represented. We staged more networking and immersive sessions than ever. Inventures is where innovators connect, do business and pitch solutions. It’s where research and industry leaders bring breakthrough ideas that energize new, positive impacts. LEARNING
- Amber Rowden
Over the 3 days Inventures offered multiple panel discussions on every topic within the innovation industries offering attendees a chance to learn from local and global leaders within the eco system, but the theme remained the same: Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Each panel delved deep into the subject of AI, underscoring its profound impact on various industries in the innovation and tech sector. The discussion was not just about the present, but also about the future, with a focus on how AI will continue to shape our world over the next 50 years. During the course of the 3-day conference, I attended many different panels; however, there were two the stuck out because of the content, speakers and various insights the offered.
One of the most intriguing panels was "Visualizing Animal Welfare: Advancing Care Through AI & Innovation." As a cat parent whose pet has endured several medical surgeries and suffers from anxiety, this topic resonated with me deeply. Animals, especially cats, are adept at concealing their pain, but AI is revolutionizing this aspect of animal welfare. Sylvester.AI is at the forefront of this change, advocating and implementing impactful advancements in animal care. Susan Groeneveld shared remarkable insights into how she is leveraging AI, trained with vet-approved pain scales, to assess whether a cat is in pain by analyzing subtle facial cues. This innovative approach holds the promise of significantly improving the quality of life for our feline companions.
As AI continues to be at the forefront of companies and innovation, how do we ensure it is inclusive? Naoufel Testaouni (QueerTech), Marci Laurence (Virtual Gurus), and Rotimi Ojo (Unleash Awareness) delivered an insightful and inspiring conversation on the importance of preventing the creation of barriers and bias that AI could use to affect underrepresented communities and how professionals and companies can harness and train AI to foster Diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workforce.
If you're curious about how AI is shaping the present and future of the innovation industry, Inventure$ was the place to be. While AI and talking robots won’t take over the world, the event underscored that human connection remains essential for building communities and driving change. AI is not a replacement for human ingenuity but a powerful tool that enables changemakers to amplify their impact globally. In the everevolving landscape of technology, it's this synergy between human creativity and AI innovation that promises to transform our world for the better.
“It’s hard to pick out of so many great presentations and panels, but my favourite would have to be Rethinking Approaches to Unlocking Health Data. This panel had Ray Yue, Mark Korthuis, Dr. Ewan Affleck, and Tim Murphy. The photo (above) illustrates an amazing circle around Individual Harm, Health System Harm, and Population Harm. We are forever working to keep everyone and everything safe while still being able to provide the best possible care. For most individuals, the biggest takeaway from this presentation is that you need to know your health information and speak up for yourself. There are so many rules and regulations in place that it is impossible to know if your current provider has access to your entire health history, so make sure you know it and speak up! You are always the best advocate for yourself, and Flying Start Advocates is here to help when you need it.” –
Samantha Moore
“Inventures was an amazing couple of days of speakers and great panels, but nothing beats meeting someone in person that you only met online before!”
– Samantha Moore

Innovation Through Adversity: A Journey from Trauma to Triumph
The Creation of a Life-Saving Program
- Simone Fortier
The human spirit often finds its most profound innovations in the face of adversity.
As a best-selling author who has faced the harrowing challenges of trauma and abuse, I can attest to the transformative power of turning pain into purpose.
My journey has led me to create a groundbreaking program that addresses procrastination, defiance, and self-sabotage, helping individuals overcome obstacles that once seemed insurmountable.
This program saved my life and has become a beacon of hope for countless others, including children as young as five.
The Gap That Sparked Innovation
Innovation typically arises from a gap—a need that demands a solution.
My life has always been characterized by this principle. I’ve always been an inventor, a pioneer. Despite the hardships, I felt a compelling purpose to keep forging ahead, to find solutions to the pain caused by brain injury and ADHD.
This purpose drove me through decades of darkness, propelling me to create a program that would illuminate the path for others.
Overcoming Procrastination and
SelfSabotage
Procrastination and self-sabotage are formidable foes, often rooted in a lack of nutritional brain resources.
These behaviors can cripple progress and stifle potential.
The program I developed is designed to tackle these issues head-on, providing tools and strategies to break free from these destructive cycles.
By addressing the underlying causes and offering practical steps to move forward, individuals can reclaim their lives and pursue their dreams with renewed vigor.
A Lifeline for Children
One of the most rewarding aspects of this program is its impact on children.
Kids as young as five are benefiting from its life-changing power.
Early intervention is crucial, and by providing these young minds with the tools to navigate their emotions, learning, and behaviors, we set them on a path to success.
This program equips children with the skills to manage their ADHD, overcome defiance, and build resilience, ensuring they have the foundation to thrive.
A Message of Hope — Innovation transcends technology; it's a bold leap toward greatness by utilizing the power of our minds.
To those reading this, know you are not alone in your struggles.
The program that saved my life can undoubtedly do the same for you. I have walked through the fire so that you don’t have to.
I’ve spent decades in darkness, but the light I’ve found can guide you out of yours. Join me on this journey of healing and empowerment and discover the lifechanging potential within you.
Innovation is born from necessity and nurtured by the determination to overcome adversity.
Whether you are struggling with procrastination, self-sabotage, or the challenges of ADHD, know that there is hope.
The Brain Nutrition Program has changed my life and can change yours, too.
Take the first step towards creating space in your mind to innovate.

This issue of Telling It Like It Is features Jade Alberts
“Atleast once a year CN! Mag…well Krista, likes to hi-jack Telling It Like It Is and have Jade talk about the amazing work he is doing! He represents & supports entrepreneurs, founders and mental wellness in business… he is building community, providing opportunity for community while supporting the business & start up ecosystems.”
Thank you, Jade.
What is your definition of community?
When everyone is focused on making others better.
How is community created?
I believe it happens organically. You can't force things to happen. When people come together looking to achieve a goal, great things can be achieved. Once people see what is going on they want to be part of it.
What is Innovation?
Innovation is making a difference positively in your business or community and making things better to give you and y our people a better way to make a difference. You want to drive progress.
How does innovation play a role in community?
In my opinion it should change quality of life at every level in your community. We need to adapt to the way things are changing to build a prosperous future.
How do you leverage innovation within your business?
Peer Guidance was founded to make sure that everybody, regardless of their financial situation had access to people they need to meet. It was a simple concept that we wanted to give back. Innovation doesn’t have to be tech enabled; it needs to make a difference.
You host a weekly morning networking breakfast ‘Founders Coffee’ which has built a strong community of founders … tell us how you started this?
I wanted entrepreneurs and founders to have a place to meet like-minded people. This can be a very lonely journey, but it doesn’t have to be done alone. Talking to people who have done it before or are going through the same things you are makes life a little easier.
Why is it important to build opportunities for people to connect? And why did you take this on? Instead of just joining a group?
A lot of the events were after work and involved alcohol or a bar setting. I wanted something different. A lot of people would tell me they can’t make events because they have kid functions or are just tired after a long day’s work.
Getting up and starting your day after talking to people really energizes myself and I know other say that. I am always pumped when I leave founders coffee.
You also host a weekly podcast “telling it like it is” where you share amazing stories of founders and entrepreneurswhy do you do this? Why do you show case other peoples work and how does it relate to community?
I wanted to do something that showcase all the great entrepreneurs in our community. There were no podcasts or anything when I started 6 1/2 years ago. I am honoured that we’re still going, and people are still reaching 6 million views was never something I imagined.
Entrepreneurs that have come on my show have received investments, have gained new
clients, have made connections internationally and were able to use the platform to really promote themselves.
When I bring on industry supporters, they have an opportunity to showcase all the great things they are doing to support entrepreneurs. It is important for people to know all the support avenues they have access to.
Advice to someone looking for opportunities to connect with like minded people?
Networking is one of the most important parts of being an entrepreneur. You never know who you’re going to run into, and you never know who you will talk to. When you start telling your story, people in our community want to help. They will make introductions and open doors for you. these conversations can make a huge difference in the growth of your business.

Unlocking Potential: Innovation Through
2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusive Workplace Cultures
by Naoufel Testaouni, CEO, QueerTech
Workplace culture, though hard to measure, is a high-potential area of intervention to support an organization’s long-term health and growth goals. It has been repeatedly proven that diverse workforces generate more profit, are better at problem solving, and are more innovative than homogenous workforces. However, one highly innovative, yet aggressively underrepresented community, has largely been excluded from this discussion - the 2SLGBTQIA+ workforce.
To address both statistical and foundational knowledge gaps that exist across the Canadian employment space, QueerTech developed the Queering the Tech Ecosystem: Barriers and Opportunities Research Report - a research initiative three years in the making that simultaneously chronicles and quantifies the lived experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ Canadians within the technology industry.
RESEARCH FINDINGS
Key findings pertaining to workplace culture, in both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, indicate a continued presence of systemic bias and exclusive behaviours within technology companies. In addition, the first-ofits-kind report contextualizes the specific aspects of workplace culture that act as the largest barriers to inclusion, while also providing insights into the unique experiences, and needs, 2SLGBTQIA+ employees face within this unquantifiable area of the employment journey.
These findings, though worrying, can equip employers, career professionals and the support ecosystem alike in developing informed, competent solutions. If approached correctly and thoughtfully, these solutions will encourage the retainment and advancement of this innovative workforce across the sector.
Survey Findings:
• Less than 40% of all respondents - queer and not - feel that 2SLGBTQIA+ employees are consistently treated with respect at work.
• Promisingly, 74.7% of respondents are at least somewhat out at work. Less than 23% of respondents are out “very little” or “not at all” at work.
• While nearly 70% of respondents indicated their employer has DEI initiatives in place, only 24% find them to be very effective.
• Over 55% of participants answered no, or do not know, when asked if their workplace has at least one 2SLGBTQIA+ individual within a senior leadership position at their workplace.
• Nearly 60% of participants answered no, or I do not know, when asked if at least one 2SLGBTQIA+ individual holds a mentorship role at their workplace.
Interview Themes & Findings:
We asked interview participants what barriers need to be eliminated in order to improve work cultures within the tech industry, and what tools or strategies would help in addressing said barriers. Four common themes emerged: community and mentorship, authentic leadership advocacy, intersectional competence, and dismantling the “professional” archetype.
Across multiple interviews, access to community, applicable resources and guidance emerged as a barrier that relates to, and can be addressed by, the establishment of dedicated, resourced mentorship channels. Particularly relevant to racialized individuals, women and the queer community, mentorship channelsand a culture of mentorship and sponsorship - have the potential to deliver multi-pronged solutions, including confidence building, skill and industry transition development, the fostering of connections to company decision makers, leadership pipeline establishment, and increased access to culturally competent resources and education.
Several interviewees highlighted the mutual dependence between, and symbiotic nature of, effective DEI policies and genuine commitment from leadership. Participants emphasized that the tools for inclusion (the policies) must be maintained and energized by dedicated, committed leadership. Without both components functioning together as intended, the overall strategy and approach are often rendered ineffective.
Another prevalent theme identified in interviews centred around the concept of intersectional competence and the necessity for greater organizational commitment, sustainable investment, and a thorough understanding of employees facing multiple forms of oppression. Obstacles associated with intersectional competence are present both within company structures themselves (e.g. reactive instead of proactive policy development, compliance with legal requirements versus authentic advocacy for employee well-being, insufficiently informed policy creation, and inadequately prepared and resourced inclusion channels) and in the employee experience (e.g. feeling like a burden for needing multifaceted support or accommodation, masking authentic identities or identity expressions in order to blend in, etc.).
The significance of ensuring employees feel welcome and respected in work environmentsas they are - was reiterated across multiple interviews. Applicable to both pre and post employment, many interviewees discussed what it means to “look professional” and the harmful archetype of the “professional individual”. This theme is applicable to various underrepresented communities - from queer individuals, racialized people, and people with a disability (or disabilities). This traditional archetype encompasses factors such as physical appearance, gender performance, assistive technologies, an individual’s voice or tone, and more.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE QUEER INCLUSION IN WORKPLACE CULTURE:
In the research report’s complimentary literature review, various barriers to inclusive workplace culture - and proposed solutions to said barriers - were identified:
Barrier: Multiply oppressed people face unique issues that negatively impact their experience at work.
Solution: The most urgent measures and targeted interventions need to be built and implemented to tackle issues that arise for these groups, with dedicated priority.
Barrier: Transgender people face challenges that can impact their ability to continue in their fields (e.g. hormone treatments, gender affirming surgeries, lack of resources like appropriate restrooms, ignorance and stigma). (Beauregard, 2018; Matsuda, 2015; Leatherman, 2019).
Solution: 1. Specific measures to support Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) workers (recognizing name changes, including trans healthcare, and providing accessible gender-neutral bathrooms).
2. Diversity training to help employees support TGNC workers (diversity workshops, listening to trans voices, sharing and respecting pronouns). (Ng, et al., 2017; Leatherman, 2019; Riley, 2008; Matsuda, 2015).
Barrier: Lack of queer mentors and role models, especially for queer people who are more alienated from STEM spaces (such as transgender or Indigenous people).
Solution: Leadership opportunities for queer people, supporting diverse role models, increasing visibility of queer issues, reducing pressure to separate professional and personal lives in STEM culture to foster disclosure. (Kurzweil, 2010; Poku, 2020; Hughes, 2018; Suri, 2015).
Barrier: A disconnect between the skills employer’s value (collaboration, relationshipbuilding), those that many queer employees have (empathy, inclusiveness), and the priorities of the company.
Solution: Companies should better understand the needs of queer employees and align their priorities with those of their workers (Out Leadership & PwC, 2019).
Barrier: Queer people are often unaware, or skeptical, of organizational resources. (Schnitzer, & Fang, 2015; Out Leadership & PwC, 2019; Lloren et al., 2016).
Solution:
1. Include queer people when deciding on which queer-friendly policies to adopt
2. Consult several organizations, in particular those that work with more severely affected populations such as TGNC and BIPOC communities
3. Ensure that workforce is aware of policies by implementing measures in recruitment and reviews 4.Consistently demonstrate commitment to social justice.
Barrier: There is a lack of competent research within this field, itself.
Solution: Collect measures on sexual orientation and gender identity so that researchers, policymakers, and organizations can assess (1) educational and cultural barriers, (2) disparities across STEM fields, (3) intersections of gender, ethnicity, and class, and (4) pipeline issues; and to aid in developing accountability systems to protect against bias and discrimination. Freeman, 2020; Langin, 2020).
“The problem is not that are too many letters or too many flags. The Problem is that there is too few, don’t we all deserve to be seen? Pride is not only the celebration of a community that has a history of being marginalized. For us Pride is the celebration of the individual who has faced the hatred and stood tall alone at time and together with others at times, but we have always stood back up. In every interaction that we have won any rights it started with one person saying enough is enough. And we feel those individuals deserve their own letter and their own flag.”
Steven Archambualt, Co-founder Stonewall Recovery
QueerTech has also developed tailored recommendations aimed at improving inclusion within work culture, informed by research findings:
1. Encourage active participation from all staff in diversity trainings, with an emphasis on genuine curiosity and learning.
2. Establish top-down modelling of expected organizational behaviours, with a focus on transparency and accountability.
3. Normalize pronoun use across all departments and employees, whether engaging internally at the company or externally with stakeholders and clients.
4. Use correct names and pronouns of all team members, clients and stakeholderseven when they aren’t in the room.
5. Establish consistently utilized systems for promoting queer leadership and role models.
6. Across all employee-facing initiatives and/or channels, the most urgent measures and targeted interventions need to be built and implemented to tackle issues that arise for multiply oppressed employees, with dedicated priority.
7. Involve queer employees and, if applicable, external experts when approaching the iteration or development of net-new staff initiatives.
8. Develop channels for social impact pro-bono work so all team members can regularly engage with social justice, equality and societal change initiatives and organizations.
9. Demonstrate allyship by understanding and displaying flags and symbols of solidarity.
10. Plan thoughtful team building activities that are cognizant of the historical and contemporary barriers experienced by underrepresented communities (i.e. avoid intoxicants, the need for personal spending, etc.).

Creating Space for Success: Haven’s Harbour
Haven’s Harbour Q & A with Carolyn Hollway, Community Engagement Officer at Safe Haven Foundation.
What is Havens Harbours?
Haven’s Harbour is Safe Haven Foundation’s newest initiative which provides affordable housing with supports for young women ages 18-29 who are pursing post-secondary education and cannot otherwise afford to do so. These young women will be ready to live independently with light touch supports and come to us through our Haven’s Way homes and other likeminded programs.
How will this benefit Safe Haven participants and the community? (How many more youth can you help with this initiative?)
We have purchased a building in the South Calgary area, which is undergoing renovations to provide eight safe, stable, affordable housing units with 9 beds for women transitioning to fully independent living. This residence will increase the number of young people we serve by 150% and, in turn, increases the positive impact for their communities of families and natural supports. Looking at Haven’s Harbour in terms of hard numbers, this equates to 3,285 bed nights per year for youth who are safely housed with access to education.
In addition to offering subsidized rental rates (46-47% below market value), Haven’s Harbour will have an on-site Community Hub which will have designated spaces including a cultural centre, gym, community teaching kitchen, and patio. These spaces will create opportunities to build community, access resources, form relationships, and advance the youth’s living and life skills.
Is there plans to build more locations for Havens Harbours? Or expand
Our commitment and focus at this point is to complete this Haven’s Harbour building and ensure the longevity of that housing program as well as our founding program, Haven’s Way. It is our mandate to ensure that we always have a full year of operating expenses in place so that our youth are never at risk of losing their homes and security. As much as there is an urgent need for more programs like Haven’s Way and Haven’s Harbour, it comes with significant funding requirements which is a challenge in today’s economy.
How can the community help?
The Haven’s Harbour capital campaign budget is $2.6 million which includes a mortgage on the building. To date, we have raised almost $2 million towards the total cost. We are seeking goods and services and monetary donations to complete the renovations, pay off the mortgage and reach our goal of having the building fully occupied and operational by the end of this year. We do not receive United Way or feefor-service government funding, relying on the generosity of corporations, granting organizations, third-party partnerships, fundraising events and individual Calgarians.

The community came together for a night of great food, wine, music, celebrating & connecting to raise money for a remarkable organizing making an impact in young girl’s lives, the Safe Haven Foundation!

Safe Haven Foundation raised $82,000.00
Aside from a remarkable event that supports community one of the highlights was the live band; The Frontiers who played in the Rouges stunning Garden. The Frontiers are a local. pop/rock Calgary band! Make sure you check them out at one of their up-andcoming shows. (or book them for your next event!)
Another highlight of the night was hearing from an alumni of the Safe Haven’s Program, Thuy Ho. Who spoke of their journey and the impact Safe Haven has made in their life. Seeing the success and pride that they wear as they now focus on their story was incredible.
The Rouge Garden Party is a fantastic event made possible because of community!
Building Community & Wellness!
Meet Joanne Neweduk, the CEO and Pod cast Host for Fab at 50, and leader of Fab at 50, a community of women changing the aging narrative. She is also the founder of FabulousHealth, a Registered nurse and integrative health practitioner, certified in multiple healing methods, including Metabolic Balance, Belief repatterning, and Sound wellness.
Q & A with Joanne Neweduk
In one sentence how do you define community?
To me, community means being surrounded by fabulous people with whom I share mutual respect, support, and friendship.
Why is it important to build opportunities for people to connect?
It is important to build opportunities for people to connect because feeling accepted, welcomed, and cared for, is one of our most basic needs.
Why do you create opportunities instead of just join other groups?
I very much enjoy belonging to other groups where I get to be a participant, but I have also found throughout my life that I naturally gravitate to becoming a leader and gathering people together with a common interest. I really do love, making women feel welcomed and heard.
How do you build opportunities for people to connect?
I personally build opportunities for women in midlife to connect in order to truly understand how fabulous they are. We have so much to share with each other and the world.
How do you create opportunities?
Within our Fabulous at 50 community and FabSOUL membership, I foster as sense of fun sisterhood, where every woman can feel seen and accepted, whether it be gathering for a social event or participating in a program.
Advice to someone looking for opportunities to connect with like minded people?
I would advise you to take a leap of faith and try out several groups that seem interesting by searching options such as: Meetup, local university, community halls, churches etc. I would also advise that you try several groups and see where you feel you are most welcomed.
Embracing Diversity & Tradition: Airdrie's
Cultural Festivals and Events
- Shauna Quinn, Tourism Development Officer. City of Airdrie.
Just a 20-minute drive north of Calgary lies Airdrie, a city renowned for its strong community ethos and the vibrant tapestry of cultures woven together by its residents. Throughout the year, Airdrie hosts a multitude of cultural festivals and events that not only entertain but also serve as expressions of diversity, heritage, and unity. These celebrations provide entertainment and foster a profound sense of belonging and mutual respect among Airdrie's residents.
At the heart of the city lies Nose Creek Regional Park, a testament to multiculturalism and community spirit. Blending art, culture, and nature seamlessly, this park serves as a focal point for various cultural activities and events. The Nose Creek Valley Museum, situated at the park's entrance, stands as a cornerstone of Airdrie's historical and cultural preservation efforts. Throughout the year, the museum hosts a range of events, from historical reenactments to educational workshops, offering visitors a glimpse into Airdrie's rich past. Collaborating with local schools and organizations, the museum plays a pivotal role in deepening the community's understanding of its heritage.
Upon entering the park, visitors are greeted by the striking Canada 150 public art statue by James C. Smith and a mural mosaic that beautifully encapsulates 400 local stories into a unified masterpiece, symbolizing the essence of Airdrie.
New within the park stands the sculptures titled “Stoney Grandmother’s Teachings,” a poignant representation of Indigenous wisdom and heritage. Depicting a Îethka or Stoney Nakoda grandmother imparting traditional knowledge to her grandchildren, the scene is set in 1909, the year of Airdrie's municipal incorporation. The grandmother shares insights into local vegetation while a dog, symbolizing protection, accompanies them. This donated artwork pays homage to the enduring relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the land, honoring those who have resided in the area since time immemorial. Its placement in Nose Creek Park, chosen through consultation with Elders and knowledge-keepers, underscores the park's historic and cultural significance to the local Indigenous community.
Further enhancing the park's cultural landscape are the Gwacheon Totem Poles from South Korea, standing tall as symbols of cultural exchange and friendship between Gwacheon and Airdrie. Nearby, the Dr. José Rizal Monument and sampaguita landscaping pay homage to the Filipino heritage, marking the first Philippine Historical Site in Alberta.
As visitors stroll along the orange footprint pathway, they are reminded of important social issues, including the legacy of residential schools and the ongoing struggle of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The pathway also features a rainbow-like pattern, honoring the LGBTQ+ community, reaffirming Airdrie's commitment to inclusivity and acceptance.
The park's amphitheater serves as a hub for community gatherings and performances, completing the cultural mosaic that celebrates diversity and unity. The month of June, in particular, shines as a beacon of cultural vibrancy in Airdrie, marked by a series of significant events that showcase the city's rich tapestry of cultures.

This year, Airdrie will witness the inaugural Airdrie CultureFest on July 1st from 1 - 8 PM at Nose Creek Regional Park. This multicultural festival is a testament to the values that bind the community together: cultural awareness, acceptance, and inclusivity. The festival promises to be a beacon of hope and togetherness, offering a quick glimpse into each other's cultures.
Headliner Lashley "Motto" Winter, a rising star in Caribbean music, particularly the Dennery Segment genre will bring his energetic performances to the festival, making it a must-see event. Originally from St. Lucia, Motto has produced hits like "Bend Down" and "Party Lit," extending his influence beyond the Caribbean to the U.K. and U.S. Known for his energetic performances, Motto combines St. Lucian roots with a global appeal, making his act must-see. Visitors will journey from country to country, immersing themselves in different cultures through food, decor, live performances, and conversations. The festival also features live music, cultural performances, beer gardens hosted by Atlas Brewing, delicious food, cultural activities, crafts, demonstrations, and workshops.
This initiative, born from the efforts of cultural leaders, organizations, and passionate community members, aims to foster a sense of belonging and unity in Airdrie. The event encourages residents to embrace and understand one another deeply, fostering mutual respect in this beautiful city. https://www.airdrieculturefest.com
