August heralds the start of many changes for us here at Community Spotlight. We have split the content of the magazine into events, news, lifestyle & interests and business. These new sections are grouped together and colour coded to make it easier to find the information you require. We have created a pricing structure for anyone who wishes to list an event (details on page 5) and we have also created a pricing structure for our new S66 Business Directory (details on page 30 & 31). The Directory will swing into action next month and will have details from many businesses around S66. Advertisers may notice that we have increased our advertising rate. This is to reflect our continually increasing coverage. Any bookings made under the old pricing will be honoured. Also, why not check our new website, where you can see events, back issues, sign up for our newsletter and more? I trust you will enjoy the new look magazine and I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.

SPOT LIGHT On Community News Wickersley Youth Under 10’s FC Wickersley Youth Under 10's are starting their journey to fulfil a trip of a life time. The Under 10's managed by ex-professional footballer Len Curtis and Andy Yates are playing in the A Division of the Sheffield and District Junior Football League. Most of the boys have been together since they were 5 years old and have formed great friendships during this time. This current, highly talented group of youngsters will be pitting their wits against the best teams in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham this coming season. However, their dream whilst at this young age is to take

More than an English Country Garden By Aaron James As summer comes we all begin to think about days out. But where to go and what to do isn’t always an easy choice especially for those with disabilities. However it isn’t always necessary to travel miles and spend a fortune because right on our doorstep is Winthrop Park, a community garden specifically designed to provide a peaceful haven for people to relax regardless of their physical or mental ability. It is run by registered charity Second Nature Life Support who proudly state, “The Park is an array of colour, texture and scent. The purposefully chosen flowers, plants and trees are placed strategically in the creatively shaped beds, allowing visitors the opportunity not only to perceive the beauty of nature, but to interact with it. There are Yew trees, poppies and foxgloves that were utilized in times past for medicinal purposes. Curry plants and lavender bushes can be found beyond the arch which leads to the Twisted Willow Tree, where people are able to experience the distinctive smells and various textures.” This is then no ordinary garden. The brainchild of Carol and David Bowser, the garden was formed on the site of a former sewage works, as a result of David’s experience in recovering from a stroke in 2000. During his recovery he spent hours in his

Hopefully this will inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Barcelona's famous footballers, Messi, Xavi and Iniesta! The hard task of fundraising and sponsorship has commenced and the first event will be a Race Night at the Pitches on 14th September. garden and quickly realised that the experience was playing a key role in his recovery. Consequently and after a lot of hard work and determination, and with the help of volunteers from the local community, Winthrop Park came into being. Their idea was to create a space of relaxation for the whole community in the hope that the therapeutic effect of nature would be able to help others had it had helped David during his recovery. The park is specifically designed for easy access with wide paths and plenty of benches on which to rest and relax. There is wheelchair access to every area including the conservatory, tearooms and activity centre and there is always a friendly volunteer on hand to help in carrying trays of food and drinks to the many seating areas. Their outstanding achievement was recognised in 2009, when they were awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service to the community. If this summer you find yourself wanting to try somewhere new why not take a stroll around Winthrop Park? It is located at Second Lane off

Newhall Avenue in Wickersley and a very warm welcome awaits all. Further details can be found on their website www.winthroppark.com or by phoning 01709 709335.

An Introduction To Lost Chord

longer than anyone thought possible.

Lost Chord, based in Maltby is a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and wellbeing, of people living in residential homes and struggling with dementia, by helping them to communicate through the power of music, song and dance. By using interactive musical sessions our professional musicians strive to stimulate those areas of the brain which are still responding for those who may be unable to walk, talk, feed themselves or communicate in any way.

In order to keep our current programmes running we need to raise £270,000 each year.

We currently organise more than 1200 musical sessions a year in over 100 venues on the scheme including 30 residential homes in the Rotherham area. The evidence of the power of live music in unlocking memories for people with dementia is striking and undeniable and their sense of achievement is overwhelming. Our achievements: • Some who are unable to communicate speak for the first time in months. • Some who have not spoken for some time often sing all the words to familiar songs. • Some with aggressive tendencies can become visibly calmed. • Those who are confused and unable to sit for any length of time are often still and sit for far

SPOT LIGHT On Community News Hellaby Sports Day

Aldersdale Court, Summer Fayre

As our Jubilee Celebration had to be moved to Centenary hall due to the bad weather the visit from Rotherham FC had to be postponed.

May I take this opportunity to congratulate the residents of Aldersgate Court here in Maltby for putting on such an excellent Summer Faye in and around their Community Centre recently, which was very well attended. It was so nice to witness the good old community spirit that was in evidence that day. Everyone worked together. Each year, this group of people choose to raise money for a charity, or any local group. This year, all monies raised was given to the Maltby based PHEONIX SWORD DANCERS who also attended and gave a number of performances. The money raised was well over £900.00 which will go towards purchasing a portable stage for the dances. Again, well done Aldersgate Court, you did yourselves, and Maltby proud.

They will now be coming to the Barrie Grove Playground on 1st Sept (1300-1600) however we don't see why only the footballers should have the fun so we are making it into a sports day for all children. There will be games and races for all ages including a 6 leg race (1dog with owner). Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this time. The ice cream man will be on hand in case it is very hot!

Ulley Sailing Club On the 14th and 15th of July, Filey Sailing Club had their annual open regatta. This event was an open event attended by many visiting clubs from all over Yorkshire and the UK. This year showed a very healthy attendance from Ulley Sailing Club. So much so that we won the Filey Town Council Tide Clock in recognition as the most turned out club to sail in the regatta. USC managed to get an impressive 16 boat on the water in a fleet of 60 boats. This is surely showing our growing enthusiasm and strength of the club, we are all geared up to support our Team GB in London 2012. The weather provided an interesting platform for racing over the two days, Saturdays wind and waves came from over the Brigg giving a large swell and strong constant wind. On Sunday the sea conditions settled a little, smaller waves as the wind came off-shore however strong and shifting wind provided a very interesting and testing event. Other awards on the day included winner to Jamie Mawson in the Handicap fleet in his RS600, winners of the Enterprise fleet for Matt Velamail & Tim Brownell but also positions 2nd to 8th in the Enterprise fleet goes to our members too.

Fundraising At Brundish House May I, through your pages, take this opportunity to thank the residents, staff and family members of Brundish House Aged Persons Complex here in Maltby for the cheque for one hundred and ten pounds which has been donated to the NEWMAN SCHOOL in Whiston that was presented to both Borough Councillor Jenny Andrews and myself recently. This very kind gesture was made after the residents raised this money through a grand raffle over the jubilee celebrations. Again, many many thanks to everyone. Regards. Maltby Town Councillor, Keith Stringer.

Anita Is Set To Share Her Slimming Secrets

before my husband and I’m not even breathing heavily. The one dream I do have, which I hope to fulfil soon, is for my husband and I to renew our wedding vows. That means that I can have new wedding photographs taken that I can be proud of”

A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 5 stone 6 lbs is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives for the better too. Anita Smedley joined her local Slimming World group in Rotherham 2 and a half years ago and has dropped from a size 22/24 to a size 12/14.

“On top of that, I’ve got a new career. It’s well-paid and the hours fit around my family, but best of all I’m doing something that I’m passionate about. As a slimmer myself I know how hard it can be and I couldn’t have lost 5 stone 6 lbs without my Consultant and my group. Sharing recipes and other ideas, and overcoming disappointments as well as celebrating success was all part of the journey, so there will be lots of support, encouragement and fun at my Slimming World group.”

Now, she has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club, and members at the group are getting ready to welcome Anita as their new Consultant when she takes over the group on 10th July 2012. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle like finding ways to become more active even if you’re not very mobile or don’t like exercise. “My weight loss has completely changed my life. If I was invited to a party I used to try to find excuses not to go because I could never find anything to wear that I felt comfortable in. Now I love going out and have some great clothes to wear. My husband enjoys walking but walking up hills used to make me so out of breath I couldn’t speak and I had to stop at regular intervals along the way. To my delight, I now get to the top of the hills

Garden View

The Great British Tradition We're in the middle of the school holiday period, and as many people dream of their annual trip, there’s no better place I’d rather be than in a garden. Whether I’m surrounded by the sweet smelling jasmine on a formally planted Italian hillside, or the heady scent of Lavender in southern France, or the gentle aroma of the old English rose, if the sun is shining and I’m sat in a space filled with plants, I’m on holiday. I guess it’s lucky that I have a great garden at home, which makes me feel like that every time I step into it. We’re not going on holiday this year as I’m hoping for a great British summer, (support the nation during the recession and all that), so we’ve decided to holiday at home which I believe is fashionably known as a ‘staycation’. Instead of lining the pockets of our European neighbours, we’re going on a road trip around our country to see how many gardens we can cram into one week. The last time we did this we began our trip in May, in the Highlands of Scotland, where we were just in time for the fabulous array of Rhododendrons and Azaleas. The cool damp gardens provide many scenic walks through the woodland and the smell of the fresh clean air really does cleanse the soul. It’s as if you can smell the earthy growth of spring.

22

Garden View & Puzzle Solutions

After a few months back at home our next trip took us to the beautiful gardens of Devon and Cornwall, where a visit to the fabulous Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden project were combined with more modest privately owned back yards where lots of homemade scones were consumed! We then moved across the country to stay with friends in Kent, ‘The Garden of England’, where we visited a host of National Trust gardens, as well as Sissinghurst (famed for its white garden) and Great Dixter (home of the belated Christopher Lloyd), and finally up to the Cotswolds to see Laurence Johnson’s Hidcote and the much talked about private garden of Prince Charles. Quite a year and quite a trip, a very British summer filled with afternoon tea, cucumber sandwiches and a G&T … Game of croquet anyone?

Jobs to do this month • Dead head flowering shrubs such as roses for continued flowering. • Paint the fence and other wooden structures • Raise the height of the blades on the mower so you don’t stress out the grass too much • Take cuttings from Dianthus (Pinks/Carnations). • Ensure Camellias and Rhododendrons are fed and watered to ensure great flowers next year

A Good Read & What’s Your Sport?

A Good Read

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress – Dai Sijie This remarkable little book, published only ten years ago, is well on its way to being regarded as a modern classic – so much so that it has already found itself on some GCSE English Literature syllabuses. Whilst that might be enough to put you off reading it, I urge you to give it a try – believe me, after the first few pages you will be hooked. Set in 1971, Sijie’s novel follows the story of two middle class city boys, forcibly removed to the Chinese countryside for re-education as part of the Cultural Revolution. Guilty of nothing other than having doctors and dentists for parents, they are subjected to punishingly hard physical work and appalling living conditions. Two things make their lives bearable – the presence nearby of the beautiful Little Seamstress, and a collection of books, first borrowed and then audaciously stolen from a friend, which open up a world beyond the mountains. Sijie’s story crackles with wit and humour throughout – the opening scene, in which the narrator finds himself playing a tune hastily retitled ‘Mozart is Thinking of Chairman Mao’ sets the tone instantly. But this is also a story about the power of words and the power of desire, and as such is beautifully told. Each character is vividly drawn, from the Little Seamstress herself to the grotesque village headman. Comic episodes are interwoven skilfully with passages exploring the transformative power of literature, and

before you know it you have reached the inevitable yet poignant conclusion, which will stay with you for a long time afterwards. Flat Stanley – Jeff Brown Stanley Lambchop is a rather unusual boy. After an accident with a bulletin board, he is four feet tall, about a foot wide – and half an inch thick. Of course, being flat has its advantages – Stanley’s trip to California in an envelope is great, and his brother Arthur would love to be able to slide under their bedroom door like Stanley does. And, if Stanley was round, he would never have been able to assist his neighbour in catching thieves intent on stealing the world’s most famous painting. But there are downsides too – while it is great to be a kite for half an hour, it’s not so much fun when Arthur gets bored and leaves Stanley stuck in a tree. People can be cruel too, and eventually the name calling gets too much. Luckily, Arthur is on hand with a solution to his brother’s problem... This picture book manages to make an impossible situation seem perfectly plausible, thanks to the matter of fact style and simple, convincing illustrations. Ideal to read aloud to younger children or as a first book for newly confident readers, it has stood the test of time since its first publication in 1968. If it isn’t already a family favourite, then it is destined to become one very, very quickly. Kath Bennett

Proud mum Lynn told Spotlight magazine that she first took Paige to Chera’s Dance Factory at Clifton School 3 years ago and was so pleased when she showed such an aptitude. After just 3 months she won her first freestyle competition and has now got a collection of trophies and medals in excess of two hundred! Her most recent achievement, in April this year, was yet another first place at a freestyle competition in Skegness and the award is a testament to the hard work and dedication she has shown. Paige also competes in floor and street dance which require a variety of disciplines in which she excels. However, as dance is a visual art, costume is also extremely important and Paige has always had a problem finding the right outfits. She had ideas in her mind about just what she wanted but wherever she looked nothing quite fitted the bill or met the required competition standards. A friend suggested that she contact Jayne Maxwell. Jayne runs her own, costume and corset making business, Thinbelina in Maltby, and is able to create unique designs to the highest standards. She works in a large studio purposely set out with the most up to date machines

26

and has a choice of hundreds of fabrics to choose from. Working with Jayne was very easy because, despite Paige’s youth, Jayne not only listened but shared her own ideas too. Between them they designed Paige’s perfect outfit and once Jayne had created it Paige was delighted. She describes it as the ‘costume of her dreams’ and is so grateful to Jayne for all her input and hard work. Both she and her mum are agreed that they wouldn’t go anywhere else in the future. Jayne, who can be contacted on 01709 818733, is also pleased to have been a help. “Paige is a lovely girl with an exceptional dancing talent, and a great eye for design too, and I wish her every future success.” That comment will no doubt inspire Paige to even greater things especially as she has told her mum that she enjoyed working with Jayne so much that she wants a job with her when she grows up!

Good Old Fish & Chips by Aaron James

Walk down any modern high street in the country and the large array of food outlets that greet us is incredible. There are pizza shops, Indian and Chinese takeaways, fried chicken shops, burger bars, pie shops and many more. It has even been reported that chicken tikka masala has replaced fish & chips as Britain’s favourite takeaway! Yet it wasn’t so many years ago that all that was out there was the traditional fish & chip shop. So what changed? Did we English all of a sudden become so cosmopolitan that we all fell out of love with the good old chippy? Apparently not because they’re still there serving us by the thousands, but maybe there is something that has changed. In the old days we’d nip in to the chippy and stand in the queue, our bellies rumbling as our nostrils inhaled the wonderful aroma of fish and chips frying gently in hot beef dripping. We’d wait patiently in line until our fish supper was served

Good Old Fish & Chips

up, sprinkled with salt and vinegar, and then wrapped up in yesterday’s newspapers ready for us to dash home before they went cold. Then when we ate them we’d savour that special taste that reminded us of days out at the seaside where fish‘n’chips were simply the best. It doesn’t seem the same anymore. The smell doesn’t seem the same, the taste doesn’t seem the same and moreover they’re not served up in newspaper anymore! There’s perhaps little that can be done about that as it is not deemed healthy to use newsprint due to the range of chemicals that are used in the printing process. However, some shop owners are making a real effort to bring back the old days. Rather than using the cheaper and more convenient oils for frying they are reverting back to beef fat recreating the wonderful smells and tastes of the traditional British chippy. For now they may be few and far between but they’re worth searching out because there’s nothing to beat the satisfying taste of good old fashioned fish & chips!

Recipe Of The Month

Strawberry Buttermilk Pudding Cake with Mascarpone - A delicious summery treat Serves 9-12 Preparation time 25 minutes plus 30 minutes cooking time.

Method

Preheat your oven to 200C. Butter a 20cm x 20cm glass or ceramic baking dish. Set aside. In a small saucepan, combine the water, cornflour and 100g of the sugar. Bring to a simmer, add sliced strawberries, and cook for about 3 minutes or until the strawberries become slightly syrupy. Remove from heat and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and the remaining 60g sugar. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk (or yoghurt), melted butter and vanilla extract. Whisk in the flour mixture until just combined, be careful not to over mix. Add half of the strawberry mixture to the baking dish, spreading it evenly over the bottom. Next, place the batter in large dollops over the fruit and spread evenly, being careful not to mix the fruit with the batter. Finally, spoon the rest of the fruit mixture over the batter, making sure to distribute that evenly as well. Bake for 30 minutes or until top is slightly brown. Cool on a wire rack for at least five minutes before serving. Meanwhile whip the mascarpone and icing sugar in a large bowl until light and airy. Top each slice of pudding with a generous spoonful of mascarpone.

Ingredients • 60 ml cup water • 1 ½ tsp cornflour • 160g caster sugar (100g for the strawberry syrup and 60g for the sponge) • 300g sliced strawberries • 125 g plain flour • 1 ¾ tsp baking powder • ½ tsp salt • 1 large egg • 115g buttermilk (or yoghurt) • 115g unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 225g Mascarpone cheese • 3 tablespoons icing sugar

Local Directory SPOT LIGHT On S66 Business Our Index & Directory Is Changing. Until now the directory has only

listed, for free any advertisers in that particular magazine and any useful contact numbers. Starting from the next issue, the S66 Business Local Directory will begin to take shape:

1. Advertisers will receive a simple, single line entry for free when they advertise in the magazine. They will have the option to upgrade to an enhanced listing and receive 50% off these prices. 2. Anyone not wanting to advertise in the main magazine will now have this affordable tool for advertising their business on a long term basis. 3. The aim is to make this directory the first port of call for the readers of the magazine, and because it comes out monthly, the businesses listed will always be put to the forefront of readers’ minds. 4. Please see the next page for examples and prices of the listing options.
