MONDAY

December 2012

Welcome to the Christmas issue of Community Spotlight. As Christmas is often a time to reflect on the past year, I also think that it is a good time to reflect on the reason for the season. It doesn’t seem two minutes since I was wishing you a Happy New Year, and what an eventful year it has been. We’ve seen celebrations galore including the Queen’s Jubilee, Euro 2012 and the London 2012 Olympics. Whilst the nation has been partying, here at spotlight we have also had our own celebrations as we increased our coverage from 10,000 to 16,000 homes and businesses including Maltby, I have recently celebrated my 30th birthday and the magazine has continued to grow in success and popularity with the help of it’s readers and advertisers. Spotlight wouldn’t be the same without your support and input, and for that I would like to say a huge thank you. All that is left to say is I wish you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

With just 4 weeks to go until Christmas, the party season is getting into full swing and 2 slimmers from Maltby are ready to celebrate in style after losing between them 1 stone 8lbs and winning a slimming competition. Lucy Dolan has dropped a dress size, going from a size 14 to a 12, since joining the Maltby Slimming World group and Andrea Nuttall has recently reached her target weight. Both ladies have been members for only a matter of months but now they are both looking forward to slipping into a slinky party dresses for the festive season after Lucy became ‘Miss Slinky’ for the 5.30pm session and Andrea became ‘Miss Slinky’ for the 7.30pm session. Slimming World’s annual ‘Miss Slinky’ competition recognises members who have undergone a transformation by becoming slimmer and more confident – and who look great in their party outfits too! Both Lucy and Andrea are confident that with the help of their Slimming World group and Consultant Anita Smedley, who runs the group, that their new “slinky” selves are here to stay throughout Christmas and beyond. If you’re inspired by Lucy and Andrea’s stories and you’d like to drop a dress size or more before Christmas, come along to the Maltby Slimming World group, which runs every Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Full Life Church on the High Street, or for more information call Anita on 07712 540088 or visit www.slimmingworld.com

MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL PLAN:

Thank you for taking part in our survey and helping to shape the future of Maltby. We are now looking at the questionnaires to find out what are your priorities. If you have a questionnaire there is still time to return it to the Council. Your views are important.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON: The rain did not dampen spirits for the Christmas Lights Switch On! What a fantastic afternoon! The entertainment, community stalls and most of all the people of Maltby came together for an afternoon of fun. Father Christmas saw nearly 500 children, who all received a free present . The photograph shows Rob McVeigh who officially switched on the lights. Rob was supported by the Dream Girls, Tia Treloar, 2 Chique and the Gillian Banks Theatre School dancers. However the highlight of the day was the guest appearance from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Another great success for Maltby.

MACMILLAN CANCER RESEARCH: £182 was raised by Maltby Town Councillors for Macmillan Cancer Research by donating and selling mulled wine and mince pies at the Christmas Lights Switch On. Councillors donated the mulled wine and the mince pies were donated by the Maltby branch of Tesco. Morrison at Catcliffe gave selection boxes which were used in a Tombola and raised £32.50. Thank you all for taking part.

ANNUAL WALK TO ROCHE ABBEY AND CAROL SERVICE :

This year Maltby Town Council is supporting the annual walk to Roche Abbey and Carol 8

If building your own bin, it’s best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you’ll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper,

pruning clippings (not the really woody stems) and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven’t gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Lock Up This Christmas & Puzzles

LOCK UP THIS CHRISTMAS

As we enter the season of goodwill it is worth remembering that not everyone views Christmas as a time for giving. With expensive gifts often placed under the tree we are easy targets for the criminals who would much rather take from us. Research shows that January in particular sees a substantial rise in the instances of burglary. Mark of Dickie Locks in Maltby confirms the fact by explaining that this is one of his busiest periods of the year. Often being called out to replace a lock for the victims of crime the problem is compounded by people using insufficient devices to protect their homes. Often locks are of low quality and it is not until it is too late that quality mechanisms are employed. Dickie Locks offer a wide range products that not only fulfil security requirements but are available to suit most budgets and Mark encourages people not to leave it until after the event to make the home secure. He also stresses the importance of taking care of keys. While out celebrating it is amazing how many people manage to lose or have keys stolen. This not only increases the chance of being burgled but also means being locked out of the home or car at the most inopportune times. Maybe it is an idea to save Dickie Locks' number into your mobile phone as it's when you're locked out that their services are most likely to be required.

tŚĂƚ Ă ŐƌĞĂƚ ŝĚĞĂ͊ Throughout our lives as pet sitters, we have been lucky enough to care for many tortoises. We have gained great experience with tortoises through ownership as well. The story behind this article is tortoise hibernation, what an incredible process this is to observe and carry out. We are about to hibernate Joanne, our 55 year old Spur-Thigh. What I find so fascinating is to watch Joanne as she starts to prepare for the big sleep. As summer fades and autumn encroaches into her life; how her mood changes and she starts to fast, following the aggressive eating in the warm summer sun. Her movements slow even more, and we find her digging herself into the earth, getting ready to sleep out the winter. So begins our ritual of ‘helping her hibernate’. She goes inside a box inside a trunk (to keep any pesky mice away)…with plenty of straw and blankets…and drilled breathing holes….then stored safely, for her winters sleep, until the warmth of spring beckons for our much loved Joanne….sometimes hibernation sounds quite appealing!! Since joining Weight-watchers in April 2012, 53 years old Wendy from Maltby has been an inspiration to other members. Her story has touched them all. Tragically losing her husband in 2010 eating became something of a comforter. Then her daughter was diagnosed with cervical cancer and wanted to get married quickly. Wendy felt really uncomfortable with her weight and wanted to look better for the wedding. Over six months using all the tools available to her, including great determination, she lost a fantastic 21.5 pounds and looks amazing! The wedding went ahead and even better her daughter was given the all clear. Such was Wendy’s fortitude in the face of such family issues that the Maltby group of Weight-watchers organised a charity walk and raised £500 for McMillan Cancer Research. A successful outcome indeed and it is hoped that Wendy’s experience will inspire and motivate many others to tackle and overcome the real life situations, what ever is thrown their way.

Literally 5 minutes later I received a second text message, this one reading: “AVOID PENSION POVERTY! Do you have a frozen or private pension? Reply INFO for a free pension review by an IFA! Another sales text message that I did not want and was not interested in. With claims management companies on the increase and other forms of business realising that they can get their sales message directly in front of consumers by targeting phones and other electronic devices, unsolicited phone calls, text messages and emails are on the increase. In fact it has been reported that a number as high as 1 in 3 mobile phone users have received an unsolicited phone call or text. So what can you do about this? 1. Unwanted phone calls If you want to stop sales calls you can register your details with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). This is an organisation that keeps a register on behalf of OFCOM (the regulator). To register log on to http://www.tpsonline.org.uk After you have registered with TPS there is a 28 day registration period following which time a ban comes into effect that forbids any company from cold-calling your phone number. If you continue to receive phone calls ‘after’ you have registered with TPS you should notify TPS and make a complaint to The Information Commissioner’s Office, who are responsible for taking enforcement action where a company makes marketing calls to a person who is registered with the TPS and has not given prior consent to receive such calls. The more complaints that they get the more likely they are to take positive action to deal with this problem. 2. Silent (abandoned) phone calls These are calls where there is no-one at the end of the phone when you answer. These are particularly frustrating but also can be a cause for concern, especially for elderly and other vulnerable people. Under Ofcom’s rules the number of abandoned calls companies make to consumers each day is not allowed to exceed 3% of the total live calls

32

made on that day. In April Ofcom fined home insurance and repairs company HomeServe £750,000 for making excessive numbers of silent and abandoned calls. Ofcom were clearly hoping that this would send a message to the industry that these type of calls were unacceptable. However, it does not appear to have worked. If you receive such a call complain to Ofcom as they clearly need to take more serious action but will not do so unless the level of complaints increase. 3. Unwanted Text messages Unfortunately TPS does not deal with unsolicited text messages and there is no equivalent organisation that you can register with. The only thing that you can is to ask the company that sends you the text message to remove you from their database and if they fail to do so report them to the Information Commissioner’s Office: www.ico.gov.uk. If the text message is sent without the sender identifying themselves and you have not asked for the text it is illegal under Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and with this being the case the Information Commissioner’s Office should take action. 4. Do’s and Don’ts Unless you are sure that you want to use the service advertised never respond to an unsolicited text message, not even to say STOP. If you respond it will highlight the fact that your number is correct and in use which will be valuable to them. Never give out any personal details over the phone or via text to any of these companies. If the call or text was not prompted by you, complain. Remember, whenever you give out your mobile/ home phone number or email address to a business it is likely that it will end up being sold and therefore included on marketing databases. Only give this information out if you really need to and when you do insist that you ‘opt out’ of your details being passed to third parties. For further information on this or any other consumer or legal matter visit Dean’s free website: www.youandyourrights.co.uk or join him on Twitter: @deandunham.

Martin Lewis - Gender Insurance

LEWIS

Gender Insurance By Martin Lewis

I’m not quite sure this is what ’60s feminists had in mind. Due to a new equality law that comes into play in December, many women face huge car insurance hikes, some as high as £2,000. Yet there’s still (just) time to beat it.

If there are costs to cancelling, then it’s a punt as to whether it’s worth it or not - there are no hard or fast rules here. The best thing is try to find a better value policy than you currently have that can cover these early leaving fees.

On 21 December the European Court of Justice gender equalisation ruling gains the full force of law. From that date, insurers aren’t permitted to discriminate by offering different prices based on whether someone is a man or woman – gender is no longer a factor. So, all other things being equal, you’d pay the same.

How to find the very cheapest deal

The current situation is far from that. According to Gocompare, at the end of August men on average paid £315 – or 41% – more than women. Men under 20 paid up to £2,000 more, as young women drivers have a far better safety record than their stereotypical boy-racer equivalents. No one knows for sure what will happen even now, though we’ve known about this ruling for over a year. This is because insurers are playing a waiting game to spot what their competitors will do – so they can nip in and gain advantage one way or the other. It is possible men’s prices could drop to that of women’s (fat chance). More likely, women will face monumental hikes and men’s come down a touch. Act now and you can beat it The younger you are, the more this is likely to have a full-scale price catastrophe impact, as this is where the biggest differences are. Under-35s are likely to be affected and under-25s hit hard. If your renewal is due now, great. Ensure you get a cheap policy – that effectively locks in at current discriminated prices for a year. However, if your renewal date is closer to the law coming into effect, you are at risk. This isn’t a case of all change on 21 December – insurers can bring it in, or at least start to move prices in that direction, earlier.

34

Combine car insurance comparisons. If you don’t have an unusual insurance history, the easy way to get a cheap price is by using comparison sites. Yet don’t just look at one, combine a few, as they don’t all search the same companies. This way you get a wider spread of quotes without adding much time. My assessment of the current top three for range is MoneySupermarket.com, Confused.com and TescoCompare.com. If you have an atypical situation, consider getting one-on-one help from an insurance broker. Check the biggies they miss. Not all insurers are on comparison sites - the two most notable exclusions are Aviva and Direct Line. Plus, if you’re in a home with more than one car, it’s worth also checking out the Admiral MultiCar policy as comparison sites can’t factor that in. Add in a responsible second driver. If you’re a young driver, see if you can cut the cost by adding a second driver to your policy, even if they’ll rarely drive the car. As it reduces the average risk, it can cut your cost. It won’t always work, but can make a big difference. Third party isn’t always cheapest. Counter-logically you may pay more as opting for lesser third-party cover can statistically indicate to insurers you’re a higher risk. So don’t assume it’s cheapest, always check comprehensive prices too.

The one way out is to consider whether you can cancel your current policy and sign up for a new 12-month one now. Many providers, if you haven’t claimed, will refund you for the part of the policy that’s unused.

Consider telematics policies. Young drivers who are struggling to get cheap insurance using the techniques above could also try telematics, where your driving is monitored by a box in the car, and your insurance price reflects this. For a full rundown of these, see www. moneysavingexpert.com/U25carinsurance

However, they will probably charge an early exit fee, and it’s also worth bearing in mind you’re unlikely to get a no-claims bonus for that year. So before you do anything, it’s worth checking to see what the score is.

Check for cashback. Once you’ve found your cheapest deal, see if you can get cashback on it via a cashback website like Topcashback.co.uk or Quidco.com to reduce the cost.
