A Word From The Editor

Welcome to the May issue of Community Spotlight on S66. It’s hard for me to believe that it is exactly 1 year ago that I was working on our first issue which was released June 2011. Whilst I am on the verge of celebrating 1 year of the Community Spotlight Magazine the country is beginning to get ready for the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations. In this issue we have some Jubilee facts on page 6, and information on community celebrations for the Jubilee. After speaking with a number of individuals and community groups I can see that there is a growing sense of excitement about the festivities. Many are looking forward to joining with their community and returning to the ‘good old days’ with street parties and other events. This month’s competition is for £20 of Cinema Vouchers, see page 29 for more information. If you have a story, event or general community news that you want to be ‘spotlighted’, please let me know. If you would like to advertise in future issues of Spotlight please contact us or see page 31. I hope you enjoy this issue. Please continue to send us your feedback and input for future issues of Spotlight. Don’t forget if you would like to see a back issue of the magazine they are available online at www.communityspotlight.org.uk.

SPOT LIGHT On A Diamond Job! A Diamond Job! The Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee this June. Here are few Jubilee facts and figures in commemoration. The Queen is the second longest serving monarch after Queen Victoria who reigned for 63 years. During the last 60 years, the Queen has undertaken 261 official overseas visits, including 78 state visits, to 116 different countries. During these visits she’s been the recipients of some extremely unusual gifts which include:

two tortoises from the Seychelles; a seven-year-old bull elephant called Jumbo from the president of Cameroon; and two black beavers presented after a visit to Canada. The Queen has sat for 129 official portraits during her reign including one by Rolf Harris! Her Majesty is even on Facebook. She also has a website, a You Tube channel and a Twitter account! Queen Victoria was the last and only British monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee. The Queen, who will be 85 on Accession Day in 2012, will be the oldest monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee. Queen Victoria was 77 when she celebrated hers in 1897.

SPOT LIGHT On National Autistic Society

National Autism Month

April was National Autism Month. When hearing about autism, many people think of the film Rain Man, or of a child genius who can’t function at all socially. The reality for most people affected by autism is somewhat different. Autism is a developmental disorder which affects the way a person communicates and relates to the world. The causes are not known, and it is a lifelong condition. It is a spectrum, which means while all people with autism will share certain traits, the effect the condition has on them will be different. Some will be able to live independently, while others may need care for the rest of their lives. People with autism have difficulties with social interaction, communication and imagination. Common social mores like sarcasm and jokes are difficult to understand, and figurative speech tends to be taken literally, so the expression ‘cool’ may mean slightly cold to someone with autism, rather than slang for something good. They see the world differently and often feel they don’t fit in, but can’t figure out why. People with autism often have learning disabilities that mask the symptoms of autism. Asperger Syndrome is a form of autism that is not usually accompanied by severe learning disabilities, and people with it are often of higher than average intelligence, but sufferers may still struggle with social interactions and may have milder learning difficulties such as dyspraxia and dyslexia. Around 1 in 100 people in the UK are on the autistic spectrum. As awareness of autism and Asperger syndrome grows, diagnosis for children is becoming more common, but for adults it can still be a struggle. The first step in getting a diagnosis would be to talk to a GP. It might help to ring the Autism Helpline to help prepare what to say. The GP will then make a referral to a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist for an assessment and formal diagnosis. They will ask questions about childhood history, day to day interactions and so on. There may be more than one appointment before a report is written and official diagnosis is made, but once it is done, further support and services can then be accessed. Organisations like The National Autism Society can be a great help. They can provide information about services to support autistic people, such as housing, befriending, employment and education. They also provide support for friends and family of autistic people too. The vast majority of people with autism

can lead happy, independent lives, especially if the people around them have knowledge and understanding of the condition. By Rita Williams-Hall Autism Helpline 0808 800 4104 National Autistic Society http://www.autism.org.uk/

National Autistic Society News By Keith Stringer, Maltby Town Councillor

The Ancient Brettons I'm so pleased that we have secured 'The Ancient Brettons' to help us raise funds for the National Autistic Society Rotherham Branch. I have seen this group on two previous occasions and each time they have played to a 'sold out house'. In the past they have raised money for 'SAFE AT LAST' and 'HELP FOR HEROES' and other 'fundraising' efforts. It is worth mentioning that they perform free of charge. They are a group of talented musicians and performers who will have the audience tapping their feet and clapping their hands throughout the show and I can guarantee that they will have everyone singing towards the end. Over 500.000 people in the UK suffer from Autism and every penny raised at this event will go to providing help, support and advice to the people who suffer from Autism in the Rotherham Borough. I sincerely hope that people will come forward and help support this worthy cause. St James’ Palace Thursday the 22nd of March 2012 was a special day for me and it's a date that will always live in my memory. It was the day when I had the honour to attend the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the National Autistic Society which was held at St James Palace. At 5.00 pm after spending most of the afternoon relaxing in the glorious sunshine in St James Park, I steadily made my way up to the Palace and took my place in the queue to wait for the time when the gates would be opened. As I waited, I was amazed to see how many other people would arrive to join the queue. It was estimated that there was just short of four hundred people in attendance. At 5.30pm the gates opened and I was shown to a large black door, as I approached, the door opened and there in the doorway stood a number of gentlemen and two very large and tall policemen. On arrival I was asked to provide my identity documents and my two official invitations.

SPOT LIGHT On National Autistic Society On entering, I was shown a large passage and was advised to follow it. To me there was no great rush because I wanted to take in everything that I saw. As I remember, the carpet in this corridor was a deep red colour. The ceiling was gold and all the frames that housed the number of large paintings that hung on the walls were gold too. The pieces of furniture I past gleamed. At the end of this corridor, I was welcomed by a number of gentlemen who wore black coats and grey pinstriped trousers and a number of ladies who were sat at a table who then gave me my name tag. On receiving this tag I was directed to carry on down the passage and to take a left. At the end of the journey I found myself again being welcomed by two further gentlemen who invited me into a large room. This room was no different from what I had already seen but a partition separated the room into two. The far end of the room was where I was directed to go if I wanted a drink. The rooms filled very quickly. I met and spoke to a number of people. Some seemed to be taken aback when they learned that I didn't work for the Nation Autistic Society but was just a mere fundraiser who stands outside shops in Rotherham doing collections, although I did speak to two people who did the same as I. By now the wine was flowing and the canapes were disappearing as soon as they appeared. At approximately 6.15pm there was an air of excitement throughout the room as the Patron of the National Autistic Society, The Countess of Wessex and the President Jane Asher entered. First Jane Asher spoke and welcomed everyone to the celebration and a cake was cut whilst everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' In her speech the countess described just how far the N.A.S. had come since a number of ladies had met around a table in the 60's and had formed the Society. She went on to thank all the staff and volunteers who give up so much time to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves. Following the speeches, the conversations, wine and canapes continued and any hopes I had of actually speaking to the countess were dashed as people moved forward in their attempts to speak to her too. No, I didn't get to meet or speak to either the Countess or Jane Asher but it doesn't take away the fact that I had attended a celebration in St James Palace and I will always maintain that I was representing Rotherham and its borough whilst I was there that day.

Cheque Presentation 'Maltby Town Councillors Lauren Astbury and Keith Stringer presented a cheque for £100.00 secured from the 'Scarborough Charitable Trust' to committee members of the National Autistic Society, Rotherham Branch on Friday the 29th of March. The presentation took place at Hilltop School, Maltby. Thank You May I take this opportunity to thank the many customers who supported the collection in aid of the National Autistic Society which I held at TESCO SUPERMARKET, Maltby on Monday 16th of April. The sum raised was £106.00. Many thanks to the staff at TESCO for allowing me to hold the collection in their store, it was very much appreciated.

SPOT LIGHT On Bramley and Wickersley Lions Club

Bramley and Wickersley Lions Club Easter S(F)unday – 8th April 2012

Fun, Cheers and roars of Laughter were heard around Wickersley on Easter Sunday as families flocked to the Three Horseshoes to join Bramley and Wickersley Lions Club Easter celebration. We gathered at first light to a wet and miserable morning, some nursing hangovers to turn the garden of the pub into an Easter Paradise. Marquees were put up in record time as busy Lions were kept on their toes by slave driver Lion Les. Stalls set up, bunting dangling from trees, balloons blowing in the wind we were ready with time to spare. People in passing cars were asking what was happening, promising that they would return that afternoon to join in our FUN.

new engine into the yard to give the kids, both big and small a special treat and let them get aboard. Our nosey Lion jumped the queue with hisses of disgust so that he and his new found friend could have a bird’s eye view of the cockpit and rub his paws over the polished chrome. Mid afternoon and smiles of pride were on parent’s faces as they saw their loved ones taking part in the Easter Bonnet parade, where many had made their own headwear in our craft tent. With some great prizes for the winner and runner ups, kids went away full of delight and happiness. So a fantastic fun filled day was had by many but our pack of Lions didn’t sleep that night, it was pack up, clear up and tidy up................................. Lion Gary Bartram Bramley and Wickersley Lions Club.

No sooner had the church bells chimed 12, dozens of families flocked to our fantasy haven. Kids were kept entertained with some great games like “Hook a Duck” “Stick in the sand” and to top it all a real coconut shy (many thanks Warmsworth Lions) all with fantastic prizes. Our prize every time tombola went down a storm as our thoughtful planning worked wonders with different colour coded tickets girls got something nice and boys didn’t end up with Barbie dolls. Face painting, a balloon modeller, card making and even a magician kept everyone entertained throughout the dry but breezy afternoon. Our own Lion found a new friend Baby Bop where they spent a while together on the bouncy castle only to feel the consequence of the plateful of bacon sandwiches that they had devoured earlier.

There are other downsides too, and I think the main one has to be the fact that you don’t get the thrill In addition to the traditional method and satisfaction of that special day when you go of sowing seeds, garden centres, DIY outside and observe the seedlings poking through stores and even supermarkets are the soil. Having checked daily since the week after now providing more options for you sowed them (as I do!), you get a real sense of people looking to grow their own achievement when the fresh new leaves emerge vegetables from young plants, but I’m from the crusty seed coat. The other major downside not sure how I feel about this. In one is cost, and some young plants do actually work out respect I’m excited about the more expensive than buying the end product from movement, and think that it’s a great the supermarket, but I guess there’s not much fun in step forward; mainly because it introduces that. vegetable growing to a wider audience and it takes away the scary ‘unknown science’ of germination. SPOT LIGHT On A Profile Of Muts ‘n’ Mongrels different dogs have different needs, and Good news for dog owners! While prices can vary because of this, a typical full (By Aaron James).

A new dog grooming business, specifically formed, to enable the area’s dog owners to enhance the care they are able to give to their pets, has been established within the old council workshop units on Lincoln Street in Maltby by husband and wife team Andy and Angie Bowen. For many years Angie has been well known locally for her work in animal rescue and her advice has regularly been sought by friends and neighbours on issues of pet care. When she and her husband both found themselves unemployed, with the job market offering very little prospect of improvement, they decided to go it alone and start their own business. Mutts‘n’Mongrels dog grooming service was formed and rapidly began to gain an enviable reputation for its approach. “Unlike many in our industry we really do put the welfare of the pet first.” said Andy. “Let’s face it dog grooming, for many dogs, is not the pampering session it is often purported to be and in reality it can be quite a stressful and traumatic experience. At Mutts‘n’Mongrels we do everything we can to reduce this risk. We never have more than one dog on the premises at a time, unless they are from the same home, consequently there is never a queue of dogs in cages waiting to be groomed. We offer a strictly one on one session and carry out our work at a pace that suits the dog. This means the dog is far less fearful and much more relaxed.” Despite the extra care and attention Mutts‘n’Mongrels give to their canine clients this is not reflected in their prices as Angie explained. “The whole point of our business is to offer a service that enables owners to enhance the care they can give to their pets. Dog grooming can be very expensive, so much so that it becomes unaffordable to many people, the result being that many dogs are never professionally groomed at all. This can have serious consequences for their health and well being so we keep our prices as low as possible in order to make our service available to everyone.”

16

groom will only cost around £20. This includes de-matting, bathing, checking of ears, teeth and anal glands, clipping and nail check. Additional services such as flea and tick treatments, worming and soon even micro-chipping are all available and with individual treatments from just £5 Mutts‘n’Mongrels has quickly established itself as one of the most competitive businesses in its field.

But it doesn’t stop there. This innovative and forward thinking company has other strings to its bow. In line with its ‘enhancing pet care’ philosophy and after much research into the pet foods market, Mutts‘n’Mongrels are able to supply a range of high quality dry dog foods at surprisingly low prices which start at just £8.75 for 15kg including free local delivery. What’s more… delivery is usually within 24 hours! All good news indeed for the area’s dog owners but also for Andy and Angie in their new business venture as their approach has quickly attracted a host of satisfied customers. So what has enabled them to have made such an immediate impact? Their answer is unequivocal. “Our own determination of course but in honesty we have found that our customers like the fact that at Mutts‘n’Mongrels we really do put their pet first.” More details can be found at their website: www.muttsnmongrels.co.uk or by calling 07788 524835 www.muttsnmongrels.co.uk pets@muttsnmongrels.co.uk

WICKERSLEY GALA EVENT 2nd JUNE 11am - 4pm

To celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee wickersley have a '1950s' theme with traditional fun and games at Wickersley Park - located behind the Health Centre at the roundabout or via Warren Road. The event is free and everyone is welcome to dress in 50s clothing or fancy dress for the children in a 'kings and queens' theme!! We have a 1950's swing band alongside our other line up of musical entertainment in the music marquee. Vintage transport will be on show and we already have buses on display from the era. We would love to hear from anyone who has a classic car or bike and wishes to display it. Many stalls have already been organised, 24

3 tomatoes, deseeded and chopped finely ½ red onion, finely chopped 2-3 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

but we would still like to hear from local groups and small businesses who wish to put on a stall, particularly with a theme around old-fashioned games, such as 'roll-a-penny'. There will be plenty for the children to do, including a mini-fair and activities and games. No gala would be complete without ice-cream, candy-floss and a bar-tent!! However, there is plenty of space so feel free to bring a picnic. It promises to be a great day. SPOT LIGHT On A Good Read & Puzzle Solutions

A Good Read

The Help – Kathryn Stockett The Help is a book that has mushroomed in popularity by recommendation. If you have read it, chances are that someone had told you how good it was. And if you haven’t read it, chances are that when you do, you will pass the word on to someone else. They will not be disappointed. Set in Mississippi in the 1960s, and recently adapted into a successful film, The Help is told by three women – Aibileen, Minnie and Skeeter - all strong, all proud, but very different. Aibileen works for Miss Leefolt, raising baby Mae Mobley Leefolt as she mourns the death of her own adored son, pouring her love and warmth into the little girl. Minnie struggles to keep a job thanks to her smart mouth, but with a husband and five children she has little choice but to work. They watch the white women who employ them; they raise their children, cook their meals, clean their houses, and know their secrets. Skeeter, not yet married, seems destined to become one of these women - yet for her, the memory of Constantine, the ‘help’ who raised her, awakens a curiosity about the lives of Aibileen, Minnie and the countless others like them. The initial catalyst is the Home Help Sanitation Initiative, proposed by queen bee Miss Hilly Holbrook, which aims to ensure separate bathrooms for the help. Everyone, according to Miss Hilly, knows that this is essential to prevent the spread of disease. Prompted by unease, and a deep desire to break into journalism, Skeeter sets out to tell the life stories of Aibileen and Minnie, in their own words. Stockett uses the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement and the setting of small-town Mississippi to offset the

28

stories that Aibileen, Minnie and eventually many others tell. The story which unfolds offers an insight into how large scale change can sometimes have just a tiny impact on everyday lives. Each voice is distinctive and each character beautifully drawn. Much is shown, rather than told, leaving the reader to imagine the lives beyond the outlines given. It may sound like a cliché, but this book will genuinely make you laugh and cry… and think, which is perhaps the most important element of all. Read it. The Pirate Cruncher – Jonny Duddle Look closely at the very first pictures in this book. Is there something strange about the fiddler who wanders the narrow streets of a tiny Cornish fishing village, singing a song about treasure? Perhaps, but Captain Purplebeard and his crew do not notice, and soon they are sailing off in search of a mysterious island, following the intricate map provided on the endpapers of the book. On the way, the fiddler sings them directions, advice and warnings, which they heed with varying degrees of success. Even when their numbers seem to mysteriously diminish, Purplebeard presses on... This is an incredibly detailed picture book, ideal for 3 to 6 year olds. On the first reading, the song of the fiddler carries you along as surely as it does the pirates, so much so that the ending is a genuine surprise. By the second, third and fourth readings (and believe me, there will be these and many more!) the clues become more apparent, but the whole thing is still enormous fun. Destined to become a firm family favourite. By Kath Bennett

SPOT LIGHT On The Babysitter, Election Thanks & Competition The Babysitter

Who is looking after your children? Hiring a babysitter is a great way for parents to have a night out, and for the babysitter to earn a bit of pocket money. But how should you choose a babysitter? What is the legal position around babysitting? The law does not specify a minimum age for a babysitter, but the NSPCC recommends that you do not choose anyone under the age of 16. Even when you are out, the legal responsibility for the care and safety of your children remains with you. Be aware that 16-year-olds vary considerably in their maturity, so choose someone you already know well, or who has been recommended by someone you

know and trust. Make sure you all spend some time with the babysitter beforehand, so you are all comfortable with each other. On the night, make sure the babysitter knows where you will be, the phone numbers that you can be contacted on, and if possible, the number of a nearby relative and neighbour. Make sure they know what to do in an emergency, have a leaflet with basic first aid nearby. Let them know your house rules. And at the end of the night, escort them home or allow them to stay over, for their own safety. Good luck, and have a nice time! By Rita Williams-Hall

Election Thanks

From Councillor Lauren Astbury May I take this opportunity to thank the many people from the Hellaby Ward who voted for me in recent Local Election’s. May I also thank my friends and family members who gave up so such of their time in helping me to gain such a wonderful victory. A special thanks to Cllr Jenny Andrews who acted as my agent throughout the campaign. Her plan and strategy brought about a wonderful success for me which now enables me to work for. and represent the many people in my Ward. Again. Many thanks to everyone Yours Faithfully. Councillor Lauren Astbury
