SPOT LIGHT On Community News Maltby Martial Arts Club

The Club is called the Maltby Martial Arts Club, and we train every Sunday 18:30 to 20:30 at The Wesley Centre on Blyth Road, and every Thursday 18:30 to 20:30 at Redwood School, Redwood Drive, Maltby. We charge £4.50 per session that you train, so if you don't train you don't pay. As a club we have trained in the Maltby area for over 20 years at various locations. As a club we focus on the self defence side of Karate and don't do cart wheels or other aspects of gymnastics.. We aim to help people, get fit, healthy and confident, and train people from the age of 5 to well over 50. We train in all aspects of self defence from blocks, disengagements, restraints and the basics such as kicking and punching. The aim of the club is to build a family atmosphere where people can learn, train and socialise. As Instructors we have a wealth of knowledge with two 4th Dan black belts that have trained for over 20 years and myself as a 2nd Dan that has trained for over 10 years. All 3 of us are CRB checked, first aid trained, fully insured and registered black belts in Japan with a lot of experience in training people of all ages. Craig Batham Nidan IMGKA 07796 767674

SPOT LIGHT On Community News Social responsibility - are you doing your bit? Why not join the Wickersley South Africa Trip 2013 and help us feed and educate the children Like you, WSSC (Wickersley School & Sports College) is becoming increasingly aware of its social responsibilities and is committed to supporting worthwhile projects which not only make a difference to individuals and communities, but which teach our students the most important lesson of all – life experience. As you’ll no doubt be aware, South Africa has one of the most unequal societies in the world. And, whilst the country is striving to emerge from its troubled past, many communities continue to face incredibly difficult circumstances. WSSC is playing its part and partnering with Isaac Booi Senior & Primary School in the Zwide township of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to improve nutrition and provide safe drinking water amongst its pupils through education, which according to Mr Mandela “is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world!” The project involves transforming areas of land (Photo A) with a rain water harvesting scheme to create food gardens with sustainable crops and trees (Photos B).

WSSC Fundraising As you will appreciate, a project of this nature demands dedication, planning, personal commitment, effort and of course money. And, whilst the team of students and adults involved from WSSC have promised to honour all of these and started personal contributions and fundraising efforts within their social circles, we still require the goodwill and assistance of the Wickersley community to help us realise our vision. So, the question is…”Can you or your company offer support to our Summer 2013 project?” Donations, whether material, facilities, equipment, or financial would be greatly appreciated. Also if you wanted to, we envisage opportunities for you to be involved in future projects. If you’re interested in getting involved – now or in the future - need more information or wish to discuss sponsorship then please email drodgers@wickersley.net Alternatively you may wish to donate at: www.charitygiving.co.uk/wickersley-pe Dave Rodgers Teacher & Partnership Organiser

Charity Dinner Dance

Wickersley School & Sports College Invites Former Pupils & Friends of the School to a Charity Dinner Dance on Saturday 2nd February 2013 at Rotherham Holiday Inn. In aid of the Wickersley School Africa trip to Isaac Booi School, Zwide in July 2013. To help transform areas of land with a rain water harvesting scheme to create food gardens with sustainable crops and trees.

Photo A (Before) Photo B (After) The project also involves working closely with children and teachers in some of the most challenging communities in Africa to overcome malnutrition which has been proven to impair learning.

Tickets: £29.95 available from Karen Brooks. Tel: 01709 544836, Mobile: 07961 884 194 or email: kabrooks2710@yahoo.co.uk

We’re now looking to form an on-going partnership with this Port Elizabeth school which involves the wider Wickersley community. Initially this will involve a 2 week visit in Summer 2013, but longer term we aim to carry out further environmental improvements, together with joint educational and sporting activities.

On Lifestyle & Interests

Caring for Elderly Pets

Just like us humans, our pets age, and just like humans, as they age they become susceptible to more ailments. Check your pet regularly for changes in behaviour or appearance that could indicate the onset of illness or disease. Reduced activity could be a sign that your pet is in pain, perhaps due to arthritis. This can be eased by gentle massage, but dogs also need to continue to exercise in order to keep the joints free, although too much exercise can cause more harm than good. If they’re less active, your pet might gain weight - resulting in additional health problems. This can be remedied by decreasing their calorie intake. Some elderly pets experience a loss of appetite – perhaps due to a reduction in their sense of taste or smell - that could result in weight loss. Encourage eating by offering smaller meals more regularly, by gently warming the food and by ensuring it is fresh. Your pet also needs a quiet, undisturbed place to eat. Older pets are more susceptible to heart and lung disease. Signs include coughing, wheezing, breathing difficulties and general weakness. Bumps, lumps and swellings may indicate cancer and if your pet becomes incontinent or starts to urinate more frequently, this could be due to changes in the urinary tract, prostrate or other body systems. In all cases, the sooner problems are spotted, the better the chance of successful treatment, so consult your vet promptly.

Caring for Elderly Pets

Of course, not all conditions are life-threatening. Ear infections are common in dogs and signs include a discharge from the ear, persistent head shaking and pawing. If your pet is already hard of hearing, an infection could make this worse, so be sure to make allowances and speak up! If your pet starts bumping into things, tends to stay closer to the wall than usual and follows closely on your heels, their sight may be failing. Eye problems include infections, cataracts, decreased night vision and blindness. Watch out for eyes that discharge, look discoloured, cloudy or glassy. You can help your pet cope by keeping the environment familiar – don’t move furniture around! Keep an eye on their teeth and if you notice any swelling of the gums take them to the vet as gum disease, in addition to causing tooth decay, could result in infections being passed into the blood which could cause damage to organs already less efficient and less able to resist infection. Finally, remember to keep your pet warm in winter. If you are cold, chances are they are too, so put a sweater on both of you! Having an elderly pet isn’t all doom and gloom. Ageing is part of life, and with lots of love, care, patience and regular visits to the vet, there is no reason why you and your pet shouldn’t enjoy getting old together! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

A Good Read

A Good Read

Love, Sex, Death and Words – John Sutherland and Stephen Fender Sometimes it can feel like the shelves of the local bookshop are planning your life out for you, with their collections of 1001 Places To Go/Films To See/Things To Do Before You Die/Turn 40/Lose The Will To Live.... Such collections vary in quality too – some are weighty coffee table tomes, beautifully illustrated, which reward random opening and selection, whereas others have a distinct sense of being ‘thrown together’ for a key shopping moment in the crowded calendar. Well, if you have a book buff among your acquaintance, here is a collection with a difference. Sutherland and Fender have used the days of the year as their format, and each day contains a mini essay concerning a literary event from history. Some are uproariously funny anecdotes, some are well-known tales of foolishness or excessiveness which stand up well to a second/third/tenth telling, and some are serious musings on life and literature – in other words Love, Sex, Death and Words. So, in a typical month, you might go from Peter Pan to TS Eliot, or from Francis Bacon to Harry Potter. The day by day format suggests that the authors intended this to be a book ‘dipped in to’ on any given day. However, the quality and variety is such that it can be read all at once should you so wish – I did, and passed an enormously entertaining

CORNER

train journey rattling straight through from January to June. Not just for avid readers, but for anyone interested in life and literature, this is an excellent bedside or holiday companion – funny, entertaining and educational. Be warned though – one thing leads to another and you will soon find yourself putting many of the authors who feature here on your wish list.. The Queen’s Knickers – Nicholas Allan Ever wondered why the Queen’s Christmas Speech is so short? It’s the holly on her knickers. But they are not her most impressive pair – well, not compared to the special parachute-equipped pants that she wears for transatlantic flights, or the ones that inflate into a rubber dinghy... Confused? Don’t worry, Nicholas Allan explains it all in this gloriously mad and ever-so-slightly-rude fantasy tale about the Queen’s underwear choices. The text may be deadpan, but the illustrations show just how much fun the writer is having dreaming up all kinds of different knicker varieties. It’s contagious – by the end, you too will be pondering what else the Queen (and her loyal servant Dilys) should have packed in the special pants trunk. Ideal for four years olds and above, this book is destined to become a modern classic. Go on, take a look! Kath Bennett

Garden View

On Lifestyle & Interests

Back to school – Garden School September days can often be hot and sunny and the soil will definitely still be warm after the heat of the summer, but this month also signals great, if not subtle, change. The days are noticeably shorter and the first signs of leaf fall are occurring, even if it’s only the buttery yellowing of the silver birch by the sides of the road (which seem to turn earlier every year). Now you’re back from your relaxing holiday, it’s ‘off to work we go’ in the garden too and it’s a great time for selecting, buying and planting spring flowering bulbs, and also for planting new shrubs and perennials. To work off that ‘holiday tummy’ from an excess of San Miguel (other European lagers are also available) I begin my lawn treatment programme this month by scarifying (raking out the dead grass and moss), before aerating (making holes in it) and brushing with horticultural sand. This is really only necessary on a heavy clay soil, but any lawn will benefit from a good raking and top dressing. This basically means the addition of an autumn lawn feed (to promote healthy root growth) and a sprinkling of sandy loam soil to level out any lumps and bumps. September is also a good month to get more plants for free, whether that’s by removing seed heads from faded flowers and drying by hanging upside down in a paper bag, or by division. Herbaceous perennials (those which disappear

Garden View

underground in winter and grow back fresh new growth in spring), can be dug up right now with a fork and chopped in half or quarters if big enough. Replant and water well and you will have extra plants to swap with friends or increase in your own borders. If you’re quick, there may even be time to take some late semi ripe cuttings. This way you can ensure that even if we have a really harsh winter you can get to keep your favourite Salvias, French Lavender or tender Pelargoniums going from year to year. If the onset of Autumn fills you with dread, and the doom and gloom of yet another 6 months of darkness depresses you, or you simply don’t have a clue what I’m gibbering on about in these monthly articles, then why not book yourself onto a gardening course. You’ll meet like minded gardening enthusiasts and you might even learn something in between the plant orientated chitter chatter, seed swapping and tea drinking. But if that’s all too much effort and garden school is just not for you, how about some armchair gardening? Log on to You Tube and search ‘spearjac’ to view loads of handy ‘how to’ guides.

Jobs to do this month

• Pick autumn raspberries • Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting • Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them • Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway • Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that they are ready for use in the autumn

Slimming World News

Financial Adviser, Zoe, Goes From “Less Is More For Maltby’s Women Of Helping Save £’s To Helping Lose Lb’s The Year” After a 7 year career break from the banking industry Zoe knew returning to work in the current financial climate wouldn’t be easy. Current unemployment in the area is on the increase and as a mum of three boys aged 3, 5 & 6, rising child care costs would also make full time work difficult. However, Zoe has taken a complete change of career to help the people of Wickersley see the pounds drop! As the new Slimming World Consultant Zoe is excited about the change, having seen the group lose 286lb in July she is all set to support the members continue with this. Zoe knows the challenges only too well. Now a target member, she joined Slimming World with a friend to try & shift the last stubborn 1 1/2 stone she carried after her pregnancies. After trying other methods to lose weight Zoe was blown away by the amount of unlimited free food she could eat after previously feeling she had to starve to get the figure she dreamed of. Now she looks forward to meal times & feeding her family lovely healthy meals. Zoe will welcome all members, old & new, to the Wickersley groups at St Albans Barn, Church Lane, off Morthern Rd, every Monday at 9.30am, 5pm & 7pm.

Both Slimming World members Tammy Evans and Katie Avill were stunned and excited after winning their individual group Woman of the Year competitions. Their consultant, Anita said “Both ladies have only been members for a couple of months but Tammy, has lost an amazing 1 stone 13.5lbs and has been an incentive to other members, and Katie, has lost a marvellous 13lbs. Both ladies are well deserved winners!” Tammy said: “The main reason for joining Slimming World was the need to lose weight in order to be considered for an operation and as well as being on the way to fulfilling this I’ve also benefited from more energy”. Katie is getting married in 2013 and wanted to slim down, she said “As well as wanting to look good in my wedding dress I love being able to wear the clothes I want and a great side-effect of the plan has been the increased energy levels I have and so I’ve started exercising“. The Maltby Slimming World groups are held every Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at the Full Life Church Centre on the High Street (next to the leisure centre). Facing Financial Problems?

Facing sudden financial difficulties can happen to anybody, especially during an economic recession. Losing a job is distressing enough but to suddenly find that outgoings exceed income can throw all financial planning into turmoil. Whatever the circumstances of being unable to meet household expenses may be; the reality is that one of the first casualties is often falling behind on Council Tax payments. When this happens it is not long before the bailiff can come knocking on the door. For families, who at such times are at their most vulnerable, this is a frightening experience. Bailiffs are renowned for their intimidating techniques in securing payments and often charge far more than they are allowed to under law. They will frequently threaten seizure and removal of property unless an account is paid in full and they rely on the fear and naivety of the debtor to secure payment. The truth is that a private bailiff has very limited powers when chasing overdue council tax. They do not have an initial right to break in to a property to do this. They must only enter a debtor’s property by gaining peaceful access and if this is denied them there is little they can do. Only once peaceful access has been gained do their powers and ability to impose more charges increase. The best solution when faced with a potential bailiff visit is perhaps then to simply refuse to deal with them and deny them access to your home. There are plenty of places to seek advice on what to do in these circumstances. Whole websites are devoted to the subject and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau also has trained staff that will no doubt have lots of experience in handling these situations. For many people the stress associated with falling into debt simply becomes too much. Thankfully help is available to them through excellent organisations like Christians Against Poverty (CAP). CAP is an award winning debt counselling charity with a network of over two hundred centres that offer hope and a solution to people in debt. They are able to help in a variety of ways including counselling and support, self help programmes and much more. Their services are easy to access and are completely free of charge. They are able to help anyone who lives near one of their centres and Rotherham is fortunate enough to be home to one them. Having already helped over 45,000 people facing debt problems their help and experience is a welcome resource for those who are unfortunate enough to face issues of spiralling debt. Immobilise, A New Police Initiative

Losing anything of value, such as a laptop or mobile phone, is obviously very distressing and probably even more so if the item is stolen. It isn’t just the financial loss that is suffered, but often, it is irreplaceable personal information like photos, numbers and work documents. Anything that can help to protect valuables is to be welcomed and South Yorkshire Police are currently promoting the use of Immobilise to do just that. Immobilise is a national property database that works in a number of ways to not only reunite owners with their lost or stolen property but also to reduce crime. Virtually any item can be registered from a simple mp3 player to a motor home. If that property is then lost or stolen the owner informs the police and updates the register. Should it then be found or retrieved by the police it can easily be traced back to its rightful owner. Without initiatives such as Immobilise, lost property is rarely reunited with the owner but when an item is found bearing an Immobilise sticker it is much more likely to be handed in to the police. Often the sticker itself is enough to deter the would be thief from stealing the item in the first place as a registered item is much more difficult to dispose of. The police actively visit second-hand dealers to check they are not selling stolen items. They scan items for sale and they will be alerted if any are on the database. This then can lead to the prosecution of both the thief and the dealer. Also, when someone is arrested for committing a criminal offence the police can now scan property the offender is carrying, such as a mobile phone, again alerting them to items appearing on the database. The obvious result of this initiative is that second-hand dealers are becoming more careful of where they obtain their products which makes life much more difficult for thieves. The more people that start to use Immobilise, and thieves become more aware of its implications, the more difficult it will be to profit from crime. If you would like to protect your valuables more information on the scheme can be found at www.southyorks.police.uk
