A Word From The Editor

Welcome to the August issue of the Community Spotlight on Bramley Magazine. I can hardly believe that we have already reached our third month. Time has really flown by since we pressed the ‘print button’ on our first issue. Interest in the magazine Community Events has been growing daily from community groups and advertisers Bramley Parish Council alike. I am thrilled that we continue LDF Drop In to receive information for the Tooth Care For Kids benefit of the community. After all that is what all this is about. Garden View

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY PARISH COUNCIL A Word From Bramley Parish Council Welcome to this issue of Bramley Community Spotlight. The parish council are receiving many comments about this publication and our thanks go to Matthew and his team at Snazzle Ltd. for all the hard word and commitment they are putting in to producing Spotlight each month. Residents are getting in touch with us as a result of this and it is great to hear their views and comments. Please continue to contact us. As I write this I have just come through the village and I am pleased to say the baskets and flowers are looking fantastic. Many thanks go to our gardeners John Smith and Shaun Barrett who have put many hours of work into the planting. It is especially good to see the village Memorial Garden looking so good. One disappointing event is the theft of a number of bedding plants from the bottom of Church Lane, not only after the efforts of John and Shaun, but it is at a cost to us a community. The Parish Council have two new councillors, Cllr Gill Yeardley and Cllr George Breen. They will be getting involved in aspects of our work within the community over the coming weeks. Cllr Westley Wood is working on a new web site for the parish council and the village. There will be sections where we can post minutes from the parish council meetings, news and events, and a photo gallery, history of the village and profiles of your parish council. If you have any old pictures of the village or any information regarding the history please contact Cllr Wood by email wjw_wood@yahoo.co.uk. Carnival Preparations for the village carnival are going ahead at a pace. We are unable to have a parade this year as we had hoped. This is due to South Yorkshire police being unable to commit to closing the main Bawtry Rd due to the budget cuts etc. So we will be having a smaller “parade” starting at Bentley Rd and progressing up the verge on Flash Lane and onto the playing fields where the Mayor and Mayoress will be waiting to open the carnival. This will be lead by Bramley Brass Band and will involve the carnival Queen and the acts that will be entertaining us throughout the day. There are still places for stalls at the carnival if you are interested contact glynstaves1@hotmail.co.uk. Or on 07872959762. As mentioned previously the carnival with wild west show, dog agility , birds of prey, football tournament and fun fair will be on Saturday 3rd September and the “Bramfest” music festival will be on Sunday 4th. Bramfest will have live bands on Flash Lane playing fields and also musical entertainment in St Francis Church hall.

6

The parish council have also engaged a singer to go into Cambron House to entertain the residents. There is still time for entries for the Carnival Queen for girls between 9 and 15 who live in the parish. Contact Cllr Staves for information. Carnival Logo Children from Bramley Grange and Bramley Sunnyside school have been helping out the carnival committee by designing a logo for this years carnival. There were many entries and the carnival committee had a hard job to find the winning entries. The winning logo will be used on the advertising posters, T-shirts and carnival programme for this years carnival which is to be held on 3rd and 4th September. The judges picked the top three entries from each school and then the overall winner. The winners will be invited to the carnival on Saturday 3rd September to receive their prize's. The Logo Competition Winners Bramley Sunnyside: 1st Emily Lankenau 2nd Keara Harper 3rd Rory Hutton Bramley Grange: 1st Gerogia Green 2nd Charlotte Osborn 3rd Caitlin Deakin The overall winner is Emily Lankenau from Bramley Sunnyside school. So look out for Emily's design on posters around the area. The carnival committee would like to thank everyone who took part and the staff at both schools for their help and enthusiasm. Citizen of the Year Last year the Parish Council started an award for an award to a resident of Bramley who contributed to the life of the village. There are many people who do good deeds and go un noticed. Last years winner was Keith Burrell and he was nominated by Rev Wortley and this was the nomination :

I wish to nominate Mr Keith Burrell of 8 Progress Drive, Bramley for the Citizen of the Year Award. Keith is a kind, trustworthy, reliable and hardworking gentleman although now a retired engineer and carer for his wife Morfydd, Keith is an extremely self-giving and selfless person, who does much work 'behind the scenes' to help and bless others. He is a person many turn to when in need of a listening ear or some practical household help. Keith manages a local allotment as well as helping others tend

A very modest and humble gentleman who enjoys singing and gets involved in the pastoral care and support of those in need, Keith is a regular organiser and participant at local 'Songs of Praise' and 'Old Time Music Hall' events at the local nursing homes and sheltered housing complexes. I wholeheartedly commend Keith to you for the Parish Council's 'Citizen of the Year' Award.

Nominations should be sent to Cllr Malcolm Brown at badsworthuk@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 07966954244 Youth Club The youth club continues to flourish under the new arrangements. The Young people are meeting 2 nights a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm. The negotiations with RMBC are continuing but progress is being made. When the Parish Council fully take over the building youth leaders will still be provided trough RMBC. The building will also be available to rent for community events. The PC is determined to ensure the provision of youth club activities for our younger residents. A big thank you goes to the volunteers who are giving their time to support the youth workers and the young people. It would not be possible without their involvement.

Bramley Parish

2011

Community Garden Mostly the garden is being used by the young people from the youth club. It would be great if some older residents had a few hours to become involved and pass on their gardening expertise to the younger members of the village. So far potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, peas, beans and radishes to name but a few have been grown on the garden and the young people have harvested some of the crops to give produce to some of the elderly residents. One problem we are continuing to look at is the closeness of the garden to the MUGA and the fact that balls are coming over the MUGA and into the garden. There are a number of suggestions which we are looking at and hope to resolve soon. There is no parish council meeting in August, but if there are any issues you wish to raise please contact us. In the next issue we will start to focus on the councillors so each month there will be a profile of a member of the PC Contact Numbers Chairman 07966954244 Clerk 07990664710

Community SPOT LIGHT ON Ldf Drop In

Consultation begins on Rotherham's future. Now is the time to have your say on the future of Rotherham!

The Borough-wide consultation on the Local Development Framework – the 15 year plan which sets out where development will happen starts on Monday and everyone is invited to make their views known. The consultation is about not only the overall strategy, which sets out how much development and where, but also the details of potential development sites across Rotherham. During July, August and September, the public are being urged to have a look at and comment on the proposals, which will be outlined in two documents. The 'Draft Core Strategy' - the overall plan, and the 'Sites and Policies Issues and Options'- which suggests sites for housing, employment, retail provision and other uses. This is the first time that the Council has actively sought comments on the options for the individual sites, and we need Rotherham people to help us make the best choices for their local areas. The last consultation on the LDF took place in 2009 and because of the responses from the public then, and because of changes in government policy, Rotherham is proposing significant reductions to not only its housing target but also the employment land required and the amount of Green Belt it suggests would be needed to be released. The annual housing target has been reduced by 27 per cent to 850 new homes per year. A new local target of 12,750 new homes is to be built between 2012 and 2027. The figure previously considered was 24,482 new homes. The employment land target has been reduced by 30 per cent with around 230 hectares being proposed for new economic development and a further five hectares for new office floorspace.

8

The amount of Green Belt being suggested to be released has been reduced by 60 per cent with the authority maintaining a 'brownfield first' approach and only a phased release of Green Belt towards the end of the 15 year period, if needed. The Council want the public's views and is advising them that they can view the documents on-line, at public buildings or at the drop-in sessions listed below. The consultation will last until Friday, September 16. The online consultation system can be accessed from Rotherham Borough Council's website at www.rotherham.gov.uk/forwardplanning or comments may be made in writing to be received by 5pm on Friday, September 16, at RMBC, Forward Planning, Planning and Regeneration Service, Bailey House, Rawmarsh Road, ROTHERHAM S60 1TD. The documents are also available for inspection at the enclosed venues during office hours: • Bailey House, Rawmarsh Road, Rotherham • Customer Service Centre, Civic Building, Walker Place, Rotherham • Customer Service Centre, Station Street, Swinton • Customer Service Centre, New Street, Dinnington • Customer Service Centre, Braithwell Road, Maltby • All libraries in the Borough (normal opening times) The following public drop-in sessions will be held in this area: 03/08/2011 Bramley - 2 to 6.30 pm - Bramley Parish Hall 10/08/2011 Wickersley - 2 to 6.30 pm - Wickersley Community Centre

Community SPOT LIGHT ON Tooth Care For Kids

Tooth Care for Kids

permanent teeth depends upon the condition of these first teeth, so it’s essential to care for them. Milk teeth are small with thin enamel so problems spread quickly. Adult teeth start to grow by the age of six and most should be evident by the time they’re 13. Apart from accidents, there are two preventable causes of damage to children's teeth; tooth decay and dental erosion. Both have similar causes. Acids from sweet foods and drinks, including fruit juices, eat into the tooth enamel. Water or milk are the best drinks for children. Fissure sealants are well worth considering. This is a special film used to cover the vulnerable molars which have deep, hard to clean crevices. The sealant protects the tooth surface from decay. Sealants are quick and painless to apply and last for years. Regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent future, potentially traumatic, treatment. Help your child grow up with a healthy set of teeth and gums. Good habits created while the child is young will stand them in good stead for the rest of their life.

Does the thought of visiting the dentist fill you with dread? Do you break out in the cold sweat of sheer terror? If so, then please don’t pass this fear onto your child. Your child must be relaxed about visiting the dentist for their future health and wellbeing. Good dental habits start young. Introduce your child to the dentist as early as possible by taking them with you when you go for your regular dental check-up. This will get them used to the sights, sounds and smells of the dental surgery. Your dentist may take a quick, casual look in your child’s mouth, ostensibly to count teeth, but also to check gently for any early problems. This will encourage your child to feel comfortable in the chair. Get your child used to cleaning their teeth start as soon as the first tooth shows through their gums. Brush gently with a special baby toothbrush. Supervise teeth cleaning until they prove they are proficient enough to do it themselves. Plaque-disclosing tablets stain the plaque so your child can see it. This is good for encouraging a thorough brushing routine. An electric toothbrush especially designed for children is very effective. Fluoride toothpaste is vital, fluorine in the water is a bonus, not a replacement. Most children have their entire set of 20 milk teeth by the age of three. Proper development of their

Community SPOT LIGHT ON Garden View

Garden View

This month - Microorganisms As their name suggests you can’t see them, yet microorganisms are some of the most important things you can grow in your garden. Garden soil is teeming with millions of them, or rather it should be. They help to keep the soil healthy. They decompose organic matter, replenish soil nutrients, form humus, promote root growth, increase nutrient uptake, and breakdown herbicides and pesticides. The microorganism family includes bacteria, algae, fungi, and protozoa and we want to do everything we can to encourage these tiny gardening friends. In order to provide a good environment we need to provide oxygen, moisture, carbon-based food matter, and the right temperature and pH. Oxygen content can be kept high by digging in lots of organic matter so that the soil structure is aerated. 75% of microorganisms live in the top two inches (5cm) of soil so particular care should be taken not to compact the topsoil. Improving the drainage of stodgy clay soil is particularly important as water-logged soil contains very little oxygen. Mulching helps to improve the moisture content of soil and also helps to maintain the soil temperature. Bare soil bakes in the summer and freezes in the winter. Mulch acts as

both shade and insulation so the temperature remains more constant. Carbon-based food matter is just a posh way of saying ‘organic matter, including green manure and well-rotted compost. This provides a gourmet buffet for microorganisms and they’ll reproduce rapidly. Finally, pH is probably the most difficult area to tackle. Most gardens have a natural pH range beyond which they’re not going to change much. So someone living on a limestone ridge, as I do, is never going to be able to grow acid-loving Azaleas, except in pots. But that’s not what we’re trying to achieve when creating a favourable environment for microorganisms. We don’t need to radically shift the pH, we just need to modify it slightly. There are pH modifiers on the market, but the best way of doing it is slowly by digging in compost or other organic matter. Organic matter acts as a neutraliser and will work whether your soil is acidic or alkaline. It is particularly important for alkaline soils like mine, because they have far fewer bio-available nutrients so become impoverished very quickly. This month give some thought to encouraging your microorganisms. Your plants will thank you. Modern Work

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY & WICKERSLEY LIONS

Bramley and Wickersley Lions Club Hard Work, Dedication and A New Club is Born. Things are moving at an unprecedented pace with eager curiosity from you - our local community, showing fantastic interest in forming and being part of a new Lions Club to help benefit and aid needy people and groups within our area. Immense interest was shown at our exhibition stand within Morrisons on a busy Saturday just a few weeks ago where our army of Lions both current and past explained to fascinated shoppers what we do and the benefits of what the new club will bring and do. Lion Stewart our IT professional has worked his magic burning the midnight oil in creating and building a unique multimedia website for our club, so please, next time you are searching the Web click on www.bwlions.org.uk and see his work for yourself. For all you Facebook fans out there please add us to your friends by searching for Bramley and Wickersley Lions (bwlions) and you’ll get regular updates on how the club is progressing and the amazing work we do. Our inaugural meeting on the 23rd June went down a storm with a great presentation from Lion Brian explaining who the Lions are, Their History and the Progress of the new club, and why we want to start a new club in this area. We were joined by the Lions District Governor for the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber who had driven down especially from Garforth and was stunned by the determination and passion that we have in forming a new club.

meetings and meet new friends. Funds are being raised by the sale of Raspberries and Blackcurrants and also by our Raffle at our first meeting, well done the lucky winner who won the bottle of wine, and just to re-iterate every penny raised goes back to helping this area, where a few pennies from lots of people make great things happen. Our next meeting takes place on the 28th July at 8.00pm at the Three Horseshoes and is open to all, followed by regularly meetings on the first and fourth Thursdays of each month. If you can’t attend and want to learn more and how you can play a part in helping YOUR local community then please get in touch with us. You can email us on lions@bwlions.org.uk or call us on 07505 914 080 and remember our motto “Ordinary People that do Amazing Things” Lion Gary Who / What are we? • A LOCAL Voluntary Organisation. • Part of the bigger Global Lions International. Community SPOT LIGHT ON A BRIEF HISTORY OF...

A Brief History of... The Dating Game

When Henry VIII wanted to find His fourth wife in 1539, it was a great example of how Medieval dating practices could go horribly wrong. His advisors were pushing him to marry Anne of Cleves for mainly political reasons. He commissioned a portrait painting of her by Hans Holbein. It has been said that he painted her in a flattering light, but obviously the king didn't agree, and apparently when he saw her he called her a "Flanders Mare". The marriage didn't last long and was annulled because it was never consummated. I wonder how many blind dates have worked since? The world’s first ‘marriage bureau’ was founded by Henry Robinson in London’s Threadneedle Street in 1650. In July 1695 the very first ‘would like to meet’ advertisement was published in the somewhat drily titled, Collection for the Improvement of Husbandry and Trade. The advert read: A Gentleman, about 30 Years of Age that says he has a Very Good Estate, would willingly Match Himself to some young Gentlewoman that has a fortune of £3000 or thereabouts. And he will make Settlement to Content. The first couple to be matched by computer were the Americans, Shirley Sanders and Robert Kardell in 1958. They were then introduced on a TV show called People Are Funny. They were married in Hollywood in the October of that year and their honeymoon was paid for by the show’s sponsors.

Blu Crew and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice Formed in September 2009, Blu Crew is an independent fund-raising group with primary ties to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Sheffield. With more than 20 members based throughout the Rotherham and Sheffield area, they hold social evenings, concerts, duck races and all manner of fundraising events. Blu Crew’s objective is very simple – to raise as much money as possible by organising entertainment and fundraising events. Typically we put on Variety Shows and Concerts at venues in the local area and invite members of the public to come along and enjoy the entertainment whilst primarily supporting charity. Based in North Anston, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support for children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at the hospice in North Anston. Bluebell Wood is a place filled with laughter and love. We give families the chance to relax, take a break and have fun. They provide this care and support for children and families within South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire. It costs £2.5 million every year for Bluebell Wood to offer this support. With no statutory government funding, much of this amount is raised by support groups and members of the public.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Beet Salad with Feta Cheese - Light and tasty summer fare Serves 4 as a starter or 2 light lunches Preheat the oven to Gas mark 6 / 200C.

Tear or cut the beet tops from the beets, leaving about an inch of stalk attached. Wash and dry them thoroughly. Place beets in a roasting pan or on a flat baking sheet. Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Roast for 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the beets. Test for tenderness after about 30 minutes of cooking by piercing the largest beet with a knife. If the knife easily enters the beet with only a small amount of resistance, it's done. And the smaller ones will be, too. Remove from oven and let cool for 20 minutes or so. Slip the skins off the beets. They should slip off easily, but use a paring knife on any stubborn spots. Cut the beets into 1cm / ½-inch dice, and toss in a stainless steel mixing bowl with enough olive oil to coat them. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze one half into the bowl, gently stirring to combine and checking the flavour to taste. Season to taste with the sea salt. Whisk together 3 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp lemon juice then toss the salad leave in this dressing in a separate bowl. Spoon the beet mixture onto the centre of a salad plate and top each portion with about 1 tbsp of crumbled feta cheese and about ¼ cup of the dressed greens. Serve right away.

Ingredients • 1 bunch red beets • 1 bunch golden beets • ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese • 1 cup baby green salad leaves, rinsed and dried • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 lemon • Maldon sea salt, to taste (Any cup will do as a measuring cup. The beauty of a salad is you can make as much or as little as you want...just keep the same proportions and you can’t go wrong)

Community SPOT LIGHT ON A GOOD READ

A Good Read After the Armistice Ball – Catriona McPherson This evocative first novel by Catriona McPherson recalls a time long-forgotten - those missing years following the end of the First World War. Into this setting she brings a new detective character – the seemingly guileless socialite Dandy Gilver – and a scandal, the apparent theft of the Duffy diamonds. Like all good detective stories, however, there is much more to the story – and to the characters – than meets the eye. In Dandy Gilver, McPherson creates a sympathetic and initially reluctant detective, whereas her villains and victims are by turns chilling and complex. The novel also explores the social norms and niceties of the time in real detail: one of the central twists of the plot is based on the carefully euphemistic language used by the doctor who attends to the Duffy family, and the shadow of war, and how it affected the young men of Gilver’s generation, is never too far away. McPherson strikes a balance between action, dialogue and introspection so that the reader just has time to think it out before being drawn into the next stage of the drama, and she also makes excellent use of the surrounding Scottish landscapes, which are drawn in loving detail. As the novel moves towards its conclusion, it becomes a real page turner. Appealing to crime fans and social historians alike, this is an excellent read.

The Last Polar Bears – Harry Horse The best children’s books, as everyone knows, work on two levels, appealing to both children and adults – and here is a case in point. ‘The Last Polar Bears’ by Harry Horse follows the adventures of Grandfather and his dog, Roo, as they journey to the North Pole in search of the last polar bears (and, perhaps, some ice cream, too), and will keep children gripped and adults chuckling all the way through. The two explorers set out, with their equipment loaded onto a golf trolley, and sail away on ‘The Unsinkable’. When they arrive at the North Pole, they are met by hundreds of penguins, who observe them as they battle against setbacks to complete the last stage of their journey. Grandfather narrates the story in a no-nonsense, matter of fact way – it is Roo the dog who is the more fanciful of the pair – but the words only tell part of the story, and there is much more to be learned from the beautifully drawn pictures: the penguins’ general store in particular, is an absolute delight. Always treading that fine line between fantasy (the ice cream fields on the Great Bear Ridge) and reality (the note on the first page which tries to explain Grandfather’s insistence that there were penguins at the North Pole!), this is a marvellous story which will reward reading again and again. Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call

Community SPOT LIGHT ON COMPETITION We all know the benefits of exercise so why don’t we “get round to it”? Given the long term benefits of exercise, including speeding up our metabolic rate; long term injury prevention and building strength and flexibility; not to mention the psychological anti-depressant effects of all those endorphins buzzing around; why is it so difficult to make a commitment to our physical, emotional and psychological well being? For some it might be just a question of starting somewhere from the very beginning steps, for others of us we feel stale in our current routines and need new inspiration. Big Hearted Zumba fitness instructor and ex-senior lecturer in psychology Deborah Moluwka gives us her tips for success: If you have a bigger ‘Yes’ to something else... Unless we regularly take stock of our lives, there will always be a greater pull on our time unless we get healthy habits firmly embedded in our lives. There are many goal setting and time management technologies available in our time obsessed society, such as David Allen’s “Get Things Done” philosophy, but all without exception, recommend that we sit back and take an overview to see what might be missing in terms of life balance. If you notice that there is a big gap in the exercise slot, its time to be a “no” to some commitments which will mean getting better at delegating or de-cluttering your life. A few negotiations with loved ones may be what it takes to be on a new path toward health and fitness or possibly a stern word with yourself to put your own well-being further toward the top of the priority list. Remember the new note book feeling at the start of a school year? Sometimes all it takes is the equivalent of a fresh new text book. You may need to set aside some cash and invest in some new trainers, pay for a personal training session to get you underway or maybe a few quid for dance lessons and new outfit to go with it. It doesn’t always have to cost more money, you could just experiment with a new class or gym or go further afield for the dog walk. It can be incredibly motivating to set yourself a new goal, so don’t just turn up to Zumba class expecting everyone else to motivate you, invite yourself to get the steps right in one particular song or challenge a friend to some practice between sessions to your favourite songs to get that move looking the best it can. At Big Hearted Zumba we publicise our choreography notes and music on our website (www.bigheartedzumba.co.uk) so it is always available outside class for this reason. Or choose a new running goal or other fitness challenge and watch the results on your commitment to it, especially if you share your progress publicly such as using the “run keeper” app to put your runs on Facebook for all to see. Add variety and fun One of the reasons I love teaching Zumba is that we

have a commitment to bring in at least one new dance every week. Adding variety and fun to any exercise regime will increase the likelihood of holding your interest. In a society of instant bites of information we need to satisfy our craving for newness so find out how you can create newness in your current regime. A structure of accountability Why do slimming clubs work so well? One of the main reasons is the structure for accountability they provide. So if you want to get going or get re-motivated to join a new class or build a new exercise routine around your everyday life, it can be helpful to do it with a friend or make some new friends and you will look forward to the social side of the activity as much or even more that the activity itself. In Steven Covey’s work on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he reminds us that it is a very short time before something has become a habit that sticks. He encourages us to assess which are the most important priorities and put those “rocks” in the jar of life first in our time management structure. If health and fitness are not high on your agenda, the other grains of sands which can fit in around the rocks are meaningless since if we are unhealthy, the whole of life is affected in both the short and long term. To kick start yourself, why not enter our competition this month and join the dozens of fans of the new craze of Zumba Fitness classes in your area by the Big Hearted Zumba team.

Question: Where can you find the Big Hearted Zumba Team's choreography notes and music?

Prize is 10 free sessions at Big Hearted Zumba!

To enter please send your answer to the editor by email or post (see page 3 for details). Please include your name, age*, contact number and address. All entrants must be received before 5pm Sunday 14th August 2011. Entries received after this time will not be accepted. *The minimum age to attend a Big Hearted Zumba class is sixteen years old ** Please let us know if you do not want us to keep your details on file for future promotions.

Last Month’s Winner... Congratulations to Matt Critchlow of Gaunt Road, Bramley. Matt will receive 10 free sessions with a personal trainer (AD Fitness).
