Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY PARISH COUNCIL About The Councillors The parish council is made up of volunteers from the community. A council the size of Bramley should have 13 councillors, we currently have 10. We will accept nominations for new councillors, if you feel you could give a bit of your free time to help our community contact Rob Foulds (Parish Clerk) The current members are : Malcolm Brown (Chairman) Dave Sayner (Vice Chairman) Sarah Court Dennis Hardwick Glyn Staves James Moore David Jackson Westley Wood Jason Caress Peter Ward Contact Numbers : Chairman 07966954244 Clerk 07990664710 The Council Meetings The Parish Council meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in The Parish Hall on Cross Street. Meetings start at 6.30pm with a public forum which includes input from South Yorkshire Police through Police Community Support Officers. Plantings Around The Community At the moment the council employees are busy putting in bedding plants around the village and the hanging baskets are going up. You may have noticed that this year we have extended the hanging baskets on to Flash Lane. As you can appreciate we can only put baskets up in restricted areas due to the cost. We will be planting flower beds at bottom of Church Lane and around the memorial garden on Cross Street. We do hope to extend the planting in the next few years. I am sure you will agree it does brighten up our village. The Flash Lane Cemetery As a Parish Council we are also responsible for the upkeep of the cemetery on Flash Lane. We pride ourselves in keeping this area neat and tidy as befits a cemetery. One of our gardener’s works in the cemetery two days per week during the summer
months. Last year we installed screens around the bins in the cemetery. The bottom of the cemetery has been sown with wild flower seeds, but unfortunately due to the very dry weather they appear not to have germinated. Fingers crossed they may start to grow now we have had a little rain. In the cemetery regular visitors will have seen the area which has been paved. We have planning permission to install a lych-gate type structure which will have seating in it and will be a welcome addition to the cemetery. If you have any comments on the upkeep of the cemetery good or bad please let us know.

Latest News On The Bramley Carnival The planning for the carnival is now well under way. This event started a few years ago in Hellaby and has grown over the years. Last year was a fantastic success and many hours of work went into the event. It is all worth the effort, when you see how many people especially children, leave with a big smile on their face. As mentioned in last issue we are looking for a carnival queen, for details contact Cllr Staves by email glynstaves1@hotmail.co.uk or on 07872959762 Applicants must be between the ages of 9 and 15 and live in the Bramley parish. There are still some spaces left for stalls again contact Cllr Staves. Bill Chafer Youth Club Final arrangements are still being discussed by the PC and RMBC about the takeover of the building. With good will on both sides the youth club opened as usual on Tuesday 7th June. There is still much work to be done, organising the way the club will be run. Over the next few weeks meetings with volunteers, youth workers and most importantly the young people will take place to put a plan together to ensure we give our young people a safe and enjoyable environment at Bill Chafer. The PC would like to thank the volunteers for the time and commitment they have given. We ask the young people to be patient as we are sure all will be good in the end. Community Garden The garden is progressing well. Vegetables and flowers have been planted over the last few weeks. Some young people have spent much of the week off school during spring bank working on the allotment under the supervision of Cllr Caress. Well done .

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BBQ BLISS
BBQ Bliss
How to host the perfect barbecue
Like all good parties, the perfect barbecue requires planning. Most people choose a wood or charcoal burning barbecue. If you’re going to buy one, choose one with a deep firebox - where the fuel is placed. This provides the heat necessary to cook food properly. Make sure you have plenty of fuel too. There’s nothing worse than getting to the big day and discovering you don’t have any! Have a bucket of water next to the barbecue in case of emergencies. Paper plates, napkins, disposable cutlery and plastic cups may never be stylish, but they’re tailor-made for barbecues and save on all that clearing up after the event. Put a couple of bin bags around your garden to encourage your guests to tidy up after themselves. Marinate meat the night before your barbecue to allow the flavours to permeate. If you’re cooking fish, a shorter marinade time is fine; just 20 minutes should be enough. The biggest mistake people make is not lighting the barbecue far enough ahead. Too early and the food will taste of smoke and kerosene from the firelighters! A charcoal fire takes between 35-45 minutes from lighting to reach cooking temperature. Pile fuel into the centre of the fire box to allow for a cooler area around the edge of the grill. It’s time to cook when the fuel glows red with a layer of white ash over it. The rack should be searing hot to prevent the food from sticking to it. You can oil the grill bars if you wish. Soak wooden kebab skewers in water first to prevent them catching alight. The relaxed atmosphere shouldn’t get in the way of good hygiene. Keep raw and cooked food separate, wash your hands regularly and don’t leave the barbecue unattended at any 6
time. To cook meat thoroughly and quickly, bring it to room temperature before grilling. There’s so much more to barbecued food than blackened sausages and under-cooked beef burgers. Get inventive! Variety is the essence of a great barbecue. Steak and other dense meats are perfect. Once seared on each side, move them to the cooler edge for proper cooking and keep basting. Chicken is safer if taken off the bone and bashed flat before grilling. The thinness will help it cook evenly, safely and quickly. Don’t turn the food too often. Good quality burgers are a must. One little tip is to press a dimple into the centre of the burger to avoid the ballooning effect. Vegetables add a splash of colour and provide tasty options for vegetarians. Cook vegetables in the hot middle of the grill. Fish should also be cooked in the centre. Meaty fish such as tuna, swordfish, salmon and monkfish are best because they’re firm and don’t break up easily. Don’t forget to include great salads and plenty of liquid refreshments too. Prepare for a glorious summer of eating al fresco, but don’t forget to check the weather forecast and have a “plan B” in case of rain. Suki North

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BLAST FROM THE PAST
Summer Holidays In Years Gone By
How holidays have changed over the last 50 years I am in my 50's and come from a working class background. My Dad was a miner and money was hard earned and carefully spent. He worked 7 days a week just so that he could put a little money on one side each week for a summer holiday for the family. Our summer break was usually spent in Blackpool. We would spend every day on the beach, even if the sun didn't shine. As long as the rain kept off, we would be there, my older brother, myself, my parents and generally a couple of friends and my aunt and uncle. I would spend my time swimming and building huge sandcastles and I thought I was the bees knees with my ‘Kiss Me Quick’ hat on. My brother would play cricket with my Dad and uncle and strangers (who became friends) would often join in the fun. We would have a treat of ice cream or candyfloss and I would have a huge sugar dummy on a ribbon around my neck. It would last me all week and it’s a wonder I still have all my own
teeth. If we had been well behaved we were allowed a ride on the donkeys. We were really lucky as we also went on the local club trip. My Dad would pay his subs each week and off we would go, a long queue of coaches wending their way to the east coast. Skegness or Mablethorpe were the most popular destinations. We would be given a paper bag with a ham sandwich, a packet of crisps and a biscuit and we would also have a can of pop. But the most exciting thing was the envelope with a ten bob note in it. A whole ten shillings to spend on myself. That is the equivalent of 50p these days. But all those years ago it would last me all day and pay for many rides on the funfair and I would spend hours on the penny slot machines. We were all exhausted by 4pm when we would pile back onto the coach and sleep all the way home. Oh how things have changed. Holidays are much more the norm and are part of everyones year and are pretty much taken for granted. But there is something to be said for the summer holidays of years gone by.........not that there is a donkey strong enough to carry me these days. An Anonymous Local Lady

Community SPOT LIGHT ON GARDEN VIEW
Garden View
This month - Gone to seed!
Gardening is a hobby and, after a while, most people with hobbies find themselves experimenting. They get a bit creative and want to see if they can do something on the cheap, or for free, or simply to find out whether it’s possible to do something just for the simple pleasure of trying. Seed collecting falls into this category for me. Most seeds are not particularly expensive to buy, so why would I or anyone else want to collect our own? Well I can’t speak for anyone else, but I get a real buzz from collecting seed, knowing that I can perpetuate a favourite plant without any outside involvement. Sometimes I’ll collect seed with a fair degree of certainty that I’ll be able to raise hundreds of little seedlings, and sometimes I do it for the challenge, as not all seeds are easy to propagate. If you want to have a go at seed collecting (and be warned, it’s a highly addictive pastime) then here are a few tips.
Choose a dry day with little or no wind. Select a healthy, pest and disease-free plant with seedpods which look as though they’re about to split. Label a paper bag (it’s much easier to do this first) then cut off the seedhead and turn it upside down into the bag. Place the bag into a dry place and wait for the seeds to ripen. Check regularly. When most of the seedpods have opened, tip out the contents on to a dry surface and separate all the seeds from any remaining bits of pod. Store the clean seeds in a small, labelled paper bag or envelope, in a cool dry place until ready to be used. Easy seeds to collect and grow: Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist) Aquilegia (ladies bonnets) Papaver (Poppy) Digitalis Purpurea (Foxglove) Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Cosmos bipinnatus (Cosmos) Lunaria annua (Honesty) You’ll soon discover many more. Happy collecting.
You will need: Large paper bags - I had real problems locating these until I remembered eBay. I bought 100 large bags for around £3. Plastic bags won’t do as they retain moisture and cause the seeds to develop fungus or go mouldy. Felt pen - for labelling. This is important as you will forget what you’ve collected even if you think you won’t! Box or trug - for carrying the bags of seeds around the garden. Small pair of scissors or secateurs – for snipping the heads.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON CAROLINA ON MY MIND
Carolina On My Mind
One Bramley Man’s Dream of America
Since returning to the UK I have been asked 'how was America' A simple question but not simple to answer. If asked in passing I have answered 'it was amazing'. But in all honesty that doesn't even scratch the surface. Since being a young boy I have always dreamed of America and of living there. I had seen it in movies and on photographs, admired the vastness of its land and the magnitude of its cities, especially New York. I had heard the term 'The American Dream' and for me the dream was just to stand in America itself. Now, having been there, I fully appreciate the meaning behind it. From boy to man I never lost sight of my dreams but didn't always think that it would be possible to achieve them. The opportunity arose for me to become part of the 'North Carolina Masters Commission' which meant that not only would I be visiting America but would be living there for 9 months. Masters Commission is an intense Christian School to learn about the Bible and God and then have the practical opportunity to tell other people about what we have learnt. It was a difficult process to raise the money and apply for the visa but I never lost sight of my goals and was delighted when my visa was granted. By September, my passport and tickets were in hand, tea bags packed and my British bull dog socks were pulled up high. I was flying from London Heathrow to North Carolina. I had left my home in Bramley and jumped across the pond to the big USA. From thereon in things began to change. Tea became sweet tea, pavements became sidewalks and 12
rubbish became trash. As the plane approached landing I glanced out of the window to see a vast army of trees for as far as the eye could see, I knew then that my real journey had begun and Bramley was far behind me. On arrival I was greeted by a sound wave of friendly but hyper Americans who just wanted to hear my accent. Judging by their reaction I didn't disappoint them and this continued for the rest of my stay. The hard work began immediately and the schedule was busier than I had ever experienced. We had studying, drama practice, youth and kids groups, cooking, public speaking classes, book reports and deadlines at every corner.......all this whilst travelling all over the USA in a van with 22 hyper Americans. We also helped to tutor in schools, feed the homeless and even visit people in prison. We even managed to squeeze in a 10 day working trip to the Dominican Republic which I would like to say was a break however the schedule was hectic. You may ask why we did all this. My answer is simply because our hearts desire is to show people love, an extension of Gods love. One place where we put this into practice was Boston Massachusetts. This was a place that had many similarities to home, one being traffic roundabouts (these are few and far between in America) but I am not convinced that Americans know how to use them correctly. I was endlessly reminded of the great Boston Tea Party as we sailed across the harbour. I sensed that some people here were not as fond of the British as others in America were. Another place we visited was Daytona

Community SPOT LIGHT ON CAROLINA ON MY MIND Beech Florida, where the sun never stops shining. Here we were able to give out free food, henna tatoos, nail painting, hair wraps and much more. This was on offer to young people as an alternative to their usual Spring break experience which often ends up with the misuse of drugs and alchohol. The final trip was to the city that never sleeps, the metropolitan capital of the world, the big concrete jungle that is NEW YORK CITY. Finally I found myself in the city of my dreams. To me, no where compared with this. The buildings reached high to the heavans, the sea of yellow cabs roared their horns, the hustle and bustle of people. I found this the only place where you could act your craziest and know for sure
that someone down the street is more crazy than you.......and not necessarily in a good way. There I was, in a world that previously only existing in my dreams and in the movies, a permanent smile on my face, with the love of God in my heart and the knowledge that He made all this possible for me. I am really hoping to go back to continue the good work for a second year . In order to raise the necessary funds I am using my skills as a photographer to do canvas and prints. If you would like to hear more of my mission work in America or would like to contact me regarding the photography, please email me at scottmason1990@gmail.com For now, God Bless and have a great day.

Keeping Business Local
The Importance of Supporting Local Companies
6. Shopping locally creates jobs. Shops in our town centres and villages create local employment and self employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Evidence shows that for every ÂŁ10 spent in an independent shop, ÂŁ25 is generated for the local economy.
I've always wanted to support local companies, and have found it very sad these past few years to see businesses buckle under financial hardship. With the advent of 'big brand shops' in our communities, many smaller companies have found it difficult to draw the customers in and 7. Local independent shops invest more in sustain a healthy viable business. our communities. Sole traders and independent stores are 10 reasons to Shop Local proportionally more generous in their support for the community. So supporting local shops 1. Shopping locally saves you money. People think that local shops are expensive, but the evidence just isn't there to back this up. If you think about travel to out of town stores, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and customer time, the overall cost is often much greater. 3. Shopping locally retains our communities. People don't like losing shops and services in small towns and villages. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally - so if you want a vibrant town centre, we need to shop locally. 4. Shopping locally retains our distinctiveness Many town centres in Britain look the same. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive.
vulnerable, young people and those without private transport.
9. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local shops. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping locally means that you get a higher standard of service. 10. Shopping locally saves services. Private, voluntary and public sector services cluster around shops. The loss of the high street often corresponds to a reduction in these services. As shops disappear, so do hairdressers, vets, dentists etc Your Local Shops Over the next few issues of this magazine we will spotlight many shops from around your area. I want to encourage you to keep shopping local and keep helping to build and support your community.
5. Shopping locally saves the environment. We are all aware of CO2 emissions and our environmental impact. Local shops often stock a higher percentage of locally sourced goods for Matthew Hodgkinson which distribution time and customer journey Editor of Community Spotlight on Bramley times are reduced. This helps reduce our global and Managing Director of Snazzle Ltd. footprint.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Liver and Chorizo with Onions (Serves 2 generous portions) This is a Spanish take on the classic ‘liver and onions’. Liver is nutritious and cheap but its also incredibly tasty. Don’t be afraid to give it a try.
Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed frying pan. Add the onions and fry over a low-to-medium heat for five minutes. Add the garlic and fry for a further two minutes, until the onions and the garlic are soft and just beginning to turn golden. Turn the heat up slightly. Add the chorizo. Fry for a further minute or two until the Chorizo begins to sizzle and give up some of its fat. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further two minutes until they soften. Finally add the sherry. Scrape the pan a little to deglaze it and release all the lovely flavours into the liquid. Bring to the boil and allow the liquid to reduce by half In a separate pan heat a little butter and fry the liver for just two minutes on each side it should stay pink in the middle. Serve with the chorizo mushroom and onion mix on creamy mashed potato. Garnish with the parsley NB: Don’t be put off by liver. Cooked well it rivals fillet steak for texture and appearance.
Ingredients
• 300g of lambs’ or pigs’ liver sliced to ensure it is no more than ½cm thick • 100g of cooking chorizo, sliced into rounds about ½cm thick. • 100g of mushrooms, sliced • 1 medium onion, finely sliced • 2 cloves of garlic sliced • 2 tbsp of olive oil • 100ml of fino sherry • Fresh parsley

Community SPOT LIGHT ON FAKIN’ IT
Fakin’ It!
How to fake a tan Ever since a bronzed Coco Chanel returned from her Mediterranean holiday in the 1920s, the tan has been the hottest summer fashion accessory. Women go ga-ga for that golden glow. Unfortunately dermatologists do not...and frankly I’m not wild about contracting skin cancer either. There are many things I will do in pursuit of beauty but risking my health isn’t one of them. So what is a girl to do? The only sensible way forward is to fake it. But, how can we achieve that gorgeous ‘just returned from St. Moritz’ glow rather than that ‘I’ve just been Tangoed’ day-glo! Well, there’s no denying that for a completely flawless finish a salon or a spa is your best option. The full treatment may include exfoliation, moisturising and airbrush bronzing. You’ll feel like a movie star afterwards...the only downside is the price. However, for a special occasion it’s well worth the outlay.
Apply the tanner limb by limb. Start with your legs, smoothing the lotion over the shins and calves before lightly sweeping it over the ankles and tops of the feet. Move on to the hips, stomach and torso, then the shoulders and the arms: if you can enlist the help of your partner or a friend to reach the trickier bits, so much the better. For facial skin, use a preparation designed especially for this area.. Cleanse and exfoliate, but don’t moisturise as it may affect the results. You can apply a little moisturiser under the eyes as it’s more flattering to leave this area of skin slightly paler. Remove the tanner from your palms with a damp, rough flannel. Don’t forget to clean down the sides of each finger too. Finally, allow all areas to dry for ten-fifteen minutes before dressing and refrain from indulging in any activity which may make you sweat, at least for a few hours...you don’t want streaks!
For those of us without bottomless pockets, we’re left with the DIY option. Don’t be disheartened. A good finish is not hard to achieve, you just have to follow a few rules. Set aside some time where you won’t be interrupted. Shave your legs, then exfoliate your skin with a body scrub in the shower. Pay special attention to rough areas like elbows and knees. Dry skin absorbs more tanning lotion and orange bits are so not sexy. Rub a little Vaseline over your nails and cuticles to prevent them from staining. For the most natural results, choose a fake tan just a shade darker than your normal skin tone. To Advertise Call: 01709 814549 Or Email: matthew@communityspotlight.org.uk

Community SPOT LIGHT ON A GOOD READ
A Good Read Rebecca – Daphne Du Maurier Rebecca opens with what is surely one of the most famous lines in fiction, ‘Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again’ and from that moment on, Daphne Du Maurier’s nameless narrator draws us into her story of love, passion, suspense and revenge, keeping us gripped until the final pages. Told in flashback, Rebecca is the story of a second marriage lived in the shadow of the first – the second Mrs De Winter, whose first name we never learn, meets her husband on the French Riviera, a year after he has been widowed. They marry and she returns to England with him, where she finds that her new home is still dominated by the memory of Rebecca, his first wife – a memory which is cherished and kept alive by the spectacularly sinister housekeeper, Mrs Danvers. The chain of events set in motion by the couple’s return leads to the recovery of Rebecca’s boat, and the revelation that she may, in fact, have been murdered. Du Maurier keeps the reader on the edge of their seat as the tautly plotted story twists and turns towards the still shocking ending. In the two Mrs De Winters, starkly contrasting, and the semi-grotesque Mrs Danvers, she created some of the most memorable female characters in twentieth century fiction. But the real heart of the novel, and possibly the true main character, is Manderley itself: closely and lovingly based on Menabilly, the house in Cornwall that Du Maurier explored, coveted and eventually lived in for several years, it comes alive on the page as vividly as any of the protagonists do. And in this detail lies the difference, which sets Rebecca apart from the competition and marks Du Maurier down as so much more than a romantic novelist. 26
Totally gripping, this is a story which will keep you awake reading the next and the next chapter – and which will stay with you for a long time afterwards. The Hundred and One Dalmatians – Dodie Smith It’s easy to see why this children’s story has captured the imagination of generations of readers, and why it has been filmed twice by Disney, not counting sequels and TV spin offs. However, there is a good argument for making sure that children read the book first, as inevitably there is so much more on the page than could ever be recreated on the screen. The story and characters are well-known – Pongo and Missis, owned by the Dearlys, become the proud parents of 15 dalmatian puppies, and are soon joined in their London home by Perdita, an abandoned liver spotted Dalmatian mother. However, the divinely nasty Cruella de Vil arranges the theft of the puppies in order to turn them into fur coats. The police are at a loss, but thanks to the ritual of the Twilight Barking, Pongo and Missus are able to track down their own puppies – and 82 others – to the gothic Hell Hall. The story of their escape and return to the Dearlys is told in short, exciting chapters which will keep young readers hooked and moving forward. If at all possible, look for an illustrated copy – the line drawings by Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone are as charming as Smith’s prose, and ought to be everyone’s first vision of the puppies and their parents, animal and human. A beautiful book which thoroughly deserves its classic status. Kath Bennett

Community SPOT LIGHT ON A BRIEF HISTORY OF...
A Brief History of... Cider
Apple trees have been cultivated since around the 5th century AD and cider, or something similar, seems to have been around for almost as long, although sometimes it was known as apple wine. It was brought to Britain by the Normans in around 1100 AD. Cider was originally a drink for the poor. Ale was made from malted barley and using grain for alcohol could mean going without bread. It was drunk instead of water because water
28
was often not safe to drink. The first settlers in America planted lots of apple trees simply so they could continue to make cider to drink. Originally it was made by crushing apples in a trough, until John Worlidge produced a special apple-mill in 1676. The best English cider is cask-conditioned; dry, fruity and with low carbonation. Normandy cider is sweeter and more effervescent with a complex taste. Both are perfect for consumption, chilled, on a warm summer evening.

Nutrition Everybody has an issue with nutrition at some point weather it be eating the wrong foods or not eating enough. When you hear the words “you need to eat a balanced diet”. What do you think of this? 3 meals a day, the right amount of food each meal time? Well it actually means the amount of each type of food weather its meats, vegetables or your fats. The recommendations for your daily intake are: carbohydrates 55 - 60% proteins 30% fats 10 - 15% If you maintain these then you will be eating as balanced diet and as long as your fat intake is from unsaturated fats then you will be healthy eating. maintaining the balance of healthy eating and exercise is a little harder as you need to eat enough to supply energy to exercise. keeping this balance means you will not tire or fatigue while exercising which I have seen many times. through doing this you will not receive much weight loss and if you do it will not be healthy. If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise three times a week for at least 40 minutes then you are well on the road to a healthy body. Remember to choose foods you like. Healthy diets and exercise are a lifestyle and if you change your lifestyle you will find and it a lot easier to keep up. A lot of diets fail because they can not be maintained. Andy Dawson, AD Fitness
Question: How much of your daily intake should come from unsaturated fats?
