Community SPOT LIGHT ON ZUMBA

New class at Full Life Church, Maltby

Monday, 6:30pm

Ring Deborah 0791 221 5246

www.zumbadoncaster.co.uk

A passion for fun is what makes Deborah’s classes so exhilarating! Deborah firmly believes that Zumba enthusiasts adore the new workout phenomenon because it makes fitness accessible without the strain, without the sacrifice, just the pure joy of a party. Its about happiness and fun and Deborah gives her classes her own unique style of showing them how to leave their inhibitions behind! She says to all her new Zumba participants “just leave your perfectionism outside the door” and in a world where there is such a high level of competitiveness and pressure it is wonderful to have an hour of feeling a deep rooted connection to returning students as well as finding your energy levels soar through the roof during the effective totally exhilarating Fitness-Party. Deborah understands how annoying it is to not be able to see what is going on when the classes are so packed so she has two demonstrators up front with her and can often be seen to leap out into the class and party on down, spreading the Zumba love and feeding the party atmosphere. If you bring this article with you, you’ll get in FREE to your first class so what have you got to loose? From Fatty to Fitty It is not just from academic knowledge as a retired Senior Lecturer in Psychology that Deborah knows how to keep her weight loss class members on track. She has her own “before and after” story having lost 5 stone herself firstly through treatment for an under-active thyroid then helped by her Weight

Watchers leader and pals and then through her new found passion for barefoot running and of course Zumba Fitness Classes. You may even see her cycling around on an eccentric recumbent cycle! Because she has been unfit herself, she understands the need to take things steady at first and she has a demonstrator with her at the front who shows you the low impact alternative to what you are doing thus making it safe for complete beginners and those with injuries who can moderate the routines to fit any physical limitations. Deborah is also a licensed Zumba Gold instructor which means she has specialised in helping the active older participant toward a fit and healthy lifestyle. New Zumba Class starting at a Great New Venue - try it for FREE! Deborah loved the atmosphere in an instant when she first walked into the beautiful Full Life Church venue and is delighted to be starting classes there on Mondays at 6.30pm. She was determined to find a hall for her Zumbalicious crowd that would not limit the class size and this wonderful building, with its dimmed spotlights, smooth new floor and modern airy feel is just the ticket. The Details Deborah ensures her Zumba Fitness Class contains easy-to-follow latin-inspired steps that are designed with a mix of fast and slow rhythms that will tone and sculpt your body using the most effective interval training methods which translate to high calorific expenditure. Your feet need to slide and turn easily so don’t wear running shoes with a heavy tread as these may “stick” to the floor. However you shoes need to be supportive enough to allow side to side lateral movements which are common in Latin Dancing. Bring a bottle of water, preferably with a sports stopper so you can swig your drink throughout the class. It can be handy to have a sweat towel or sweat band on your wrist for when you get hot! Wear clothes that you would wear to an aerobics class. For further information call her anytime on 079 122 152 46 or visit www.zumbadoncaster.co.uk.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY PARISH COUNCIL Bramley Parish Council - An Introduction

The Work We Are Doing

Bramley Parish Council has just held its 114th Annual General Meeting. Many residents haven’t heard of the Parish Council or the work that is done in Bramley. Many who have heard of the Parish Council think that it is connected to the church, which isn’t the case. The PC consists of 13 councillors all who are volunteers and the day to day running is done by a clerk who is employed by the PC. As well as the clerk a number of other people are employed as caretakers, gardeners and handy men. There are many aspects to the work of the parish council , which will be covered in further issues of this publication. But the main activities are running and managing the parish hall, cemetery and the carnival, which keeps on growing year by year.

Over the past year the PC have worked to try and improve the village and surrounding area. Over 50 trees have been planted in the cemetery, at the bottom of Flash Lane playing fields and more recently at the junction of Main St and Bawtry Rd as well as the bottom of Church Lane. Over the next month the hanging baskets will be put up in the usual areas of the village. This year planters will be attached to the railings at the crossing on Bawtry Road which should brighten up the area. We will continue to expand planting over the coming years to make Bramley a colourful village. As the PC is very community orientated we have started to create a community garden on Flash Lane, next to the youth club. There are two allotments on the site and in the near future a polly tunnel will be erected. The garden is to be partly run by the PC to grow plants for around the village, also the young people from the youth club have been given access to grow their own vegetables and flowers this will raise their interest in gardening and we hope other members of the community will come along and join in . Anyone who would be interested contact Cllr. Dennis Hardwick on 07774914436.

Bramley Carnival This year the carnival will be over 2 days on 3rd and 4th September. The carnival will be as normal on the Saturday, then on Sunday it will be a music festival with a variety of bands on the playing fields as well as other musical attractions at locations around the village. This years carnival has a wild west theme, there will be a wild west show, falconary display, dog agility and five a side football competition. The carnival is being organised by a committee from the community, including members of the PC, Bramley WMC and St Francis Church. Bramley Grange and Bramley Sunnyside schools are also involved this year. The children are being asked to design a logo for the carnival, the winning entry will be used on the carnival posters, programme and t shirts. Also the children are being asked to write a short story and the winning entry will be published in the carnival programme. Its great to have all the community involved in the carnival. Carnival Queen The carnival committee are asking for nominations for this years Carnival Queen. Applicants must be between the ages of 9 and 15 and live in the Bramley parish , for further information contact Cllr Glyn Staves on 07872959762 or email glynstaves1@hotmail.co.uk. If anyone is interested in having a stall at the carnival again contact Cllr Staves.

Bramley Youth Club Bill Chaffer Young Peoples Centre has been at the forefront of the PC discussions since the announcement of the closure was made earlier in the year. The PC were approached by the members of the youth club asking for support in the campaign to keep the centre open. Young people from the centre put a very strong case to the PC it was decided that we couldn’t stand back and let the centre close. Cllr Brown, Chair of the PC along with Cllr Hardwick and Rob Foulds the clerk to the PC have had numerous meetings with RMBC over the months to secure the youth club. It was announced in May that Bramley PC will take over the building and RMBC will provide youth workers for 1 session a week. At the time of writing we are still in the process of discussions with RMBC as to how the hand over will be dealt with. The PC are hoping to increase the sessions to a level normally seen at the youth club by using other resources. The main credit to this outcome is the young people of Bramley. They are credit to themselves, their parents and the community of Bramley.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BLAST FROM THE PAST Bramley Youth Club In The 70’s The Bill Chaffer Youth Club is at the heart of Bramley and after recent events regarding the centre it is clear that it continues to play an important role in the lives of many young people from the area. This has been the case for many years as Spotlight found out when speaking to a local woman who recounted her memories of the youth club way back in the 'groovy 70's'. "The club looks pretty much the same, with the play park alongside it. If I remember rightly as you walked into the centre, directly ahead was a games room with a pool table and table tennis etc. There was also a tuck shop which sold crisps and pop. To the right was a youth room where we would boogie away to disco music. It was great fun meeting with friends from other schools, who we only saw once a week at the club, so there was always plenty to catch up on. I have lots of fond memories, it was such a great place to meet up with everyone. Northern Soul music and Tamla Motown was the most popular music with Reggae becoming all the rage in the mid 70's. We would exchange gossip on boyfriends and fashion trends......oh to be young again. I went regularly on Thursdays I think, from 1972 to 1976. Afterwards we would all walk down to the Ball Inn (now the King Henry) to catch the 101 back to Maltby. It definitely played a big part in me learning to socialise with my peers and it gave me a chance to prove that I could act responsibly 20

whilst still having lots of fun. One memory that will always stay with me is of the help and advice I received from a youth leader. I was having the usual teenage traumas at home and really needed someone to talk to other than family. He listened to me, didn't belittle me at all and gave me good sound advice on how to handle things. There are no where near enough places for young people to go to these days and I am thrilled to hear that Bramley Parish Council have stepped in and taken the Bill Chaffer Youth Club over. Hopefully it will be around for many more years to come.” Signed: An anonymous child of the 70’s

Community SPOT LIGHT ON RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Cheat’s home-made pappardelle with quick tomato sauce (serves 2) Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat and add a good few lugs of olive oil. When the oil’s hot, add the garlic and chilli and fry until lightly coloured. Drop in most of the basil – stand back as it will crackle and spit in the oil – and then, after a few seconds, add the tomatoes. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 5 minutes. You’ll end up with a chunky sauce – if you like it smoother, pass the sauce through a coarse sieve. Taste the sauce and season with salt and pepper. Keep warm. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. On a lightly floured work surface, cut the lasagne sheets into strips with a knife or a pastry wheel. When the water is at a rolling boil, add the pasta and cook for a few minutes until just al dente. Drain the pasta strips in a colander, reserving a little of the cooking water. Stir the pasta into the warm sauce. If it’s a bit thick, add a few spoonfuls of the cooking water to loosen it up. Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and the reserved basil leaves and serve immediately.
