Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY PARISH COUNCIL Bramley Parish Council In August During August the Parish Council doesn’t meet. This isn’t to say that things aren't happening. The authority of the parish council for the day to day running of business passes to the chairman , vice – chairman and clerk. If there are urgent items that need approval of the full council then a meeting will be called. Our next scheduled meeting is on Tuesday 13th September in the Parish Hall on Cross Street. As usual the meeting will commence at 6.30pm with an open forum where residents can raise matters of concern. So please come along. Carnival Preparations for the carnival are now in full swing. There’s still lots to do before carnival weekend. The acts are all booked and ready to go. The overall theme is Wild West. To start off the day there will be a parade from Bentley rd to the carnival field where all the acts and various groups from the village will be led by our own Bramley Brass Band. They will be welcomed on to the field by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham. The Mayor will be invited by the Chairman of the Parish Council to open the carnival. For your entertainment throughout the day there will be The Martells Raiders, The Pheonix Falconry display, The H7M Dog agility display team, Bramley Brass Band (who will be playing throughout the day), Wackey Tumblers to entertain young and old and U12s football match between Bramley Juniors and Sunnyside Utd. To top it all the funfair will be there to give a bit more excitement. There will also be numerous stalls for you to visit. The parish council will be providing free rides for the younger generation. These include donkey rides, helter skelter and a Punch and Judy show. Come along an enjoy our village carnival. Carnival Queen The Carnival Queen for this year is 10 year old Annabel Sheil from Bramley. It was a tough decision for the committee as there were many entries, and we would like to thank everyone who applied. Annabel is a keen dancer and has taken part in shows which have raised money for local charities. In her role as Carnival Queen Annabel will attend events in the village over the next year and will switch on the Christmas lights. Last years Carnival Queen Sophie Longden did a very good job in her role and we would like to pass on our thanks to Sophie. This year we are not having the Carnival Princesses, however we would like to thank Eden Morrison and Shania Connell for their involvement in last years event. The Carnival committee would like to than Fawleys for helping to make this a special day for Annabel. Bramfest This is an addition to this years carnival and takes place on Sunday 4th September commencing at 12 noon. Local groups, Northen Swagger, Reverbed, The Talk, The Rawmarsh Mashers, The Velcro Teddybears, Alvarez Kings and Diamond Velocity will be
6
performing on the carnival field. The funfair will also be operating and food and a bar will be available. Our thanks go to Ian West for all the work he has put in to this part of the carnival. At this point we would like to warn residents that the music will be loud, but its only for a few hours so we hope you will understand !! The weekends events will start Friday evening 2nd September with the opening of the funfair. Car Boot The Parish Council held a car boot on Flash Lane Playing fields on 14th August. This was a new venture to raise much needed funds for the work of the pc. The event was well attended and hopefully we can arrange another in the not to distant future. A big thank you to everyone who helped on the day, to the traders and buyers. Citizen Of The Year There is still time to nominate a resident of Bramley for this years “Citizen of the Year Award”. This annual award is for a resident of Bramley who has done that little bit extra and as usual they tend to go unnoticed. Nominations should be sent to Cllr Malcolm Brown at badsworthuk@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 07966954244 Councillor Profiles Starting this month we are going to give profiles of your parish councillors. We begin with the Chairman of the Parish Council Cllr Malcolm Brown. I have lived in Bramley almost 30 years, and I am married and have a 24 yr old son. All my working life was spent in the steel industry in Rotherham working for what is now known as Tata steels. In 2007 I took early retirement and started doing some voluntary work in a school in Rotherham. I work there two days a week with children of year 5 and 6. Mostly I work one to one helping the children with reading and sometimes maths. An enjoyable part of this is seeing the young people develop and improve in the work they are doing. Also I go on residential trips to places such as Filey, Dovedale and Crowden. My interests include walking, cycling, photography and I am a keen rugby fan and I don’t miss many Rotherham Titans games at Clifton Lane. I became a parish councillor in 2009 after being involved in the Bramley Action Group which fought against the imposed one way system. Since becoming a parish councillor I have tried to ensure that the village is kept clean and tidy and have pushed for more planters, trees etc in the village. My main reason for becoming a councillor was to try and revive a community in the village, which we as a parish council have done by involving all sectors of the community in things such as the carnival, Christmas

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY PARISH COUNCIL lights and the Remembrance Service. All of which I feel proud to be involved in. I was elected as Chairman in 2010 and re elected in 2011. I try to ensure that all aspects of the village can have a say in whats happening to our village, and thanks to Community Spotlight this is now starting to happen. At the moment my main focus is the Bill Chafer Young Peoples Centre. I became involved in 2010 when as part of my role as a councillor I did some work at the centre with the young people during the summer holidays. We built bird boxes and did other environmental tasks. I kept in contact with the Young People and in October last year was so pleased when the young people from the centre asked if they could be involved in the service on Remembrance Day. When the decision was taken by RMBC to close the centre we were asked by the young people to support their campaign to keep the centre open, which the parish council took the unanimous decision to do. At this stage the parish council are in the process of taking over the building to ensure the future of the centre not only for the young people of Bramley but the community as a whole. The parish council hope we have your support in this. It is a privilege to be Chairman of the parish council and I am lucky to have a group of councillors working together on behalf of the village. They give their time generously for the reward and satisfaction of making Bramley a better place for all of us to live, and I thank them for this.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON OH NO NOT NITS & A BRIEF HISTORY OF...
Oh No Not Nits Again! Treat them naturally
It’s September and back-to-school time. There are lots of new experiences to look forward to, and a couple best avoided. One of these is the dreaded head lice, which seem to become more of a problem each year. Even the Prime Minister’s children weren’t immune! About the size of a sesame seed, head lice feed on blood from the scalp, often hiding near the nape of the neck and behind the ears. They prefer clean, long hair - much better for clinging to the hair shaft and for easier transmission (they don’t fly or jump!). An adult louse can lay 4 or 5 eggs (nits) a day for up to 10 days. These hatch after 7-10 days, usually on the top of the head where it is warm and humid. A louse attaches eggs to the base of a hair using saliva-based glue. Before feeding it injects an anaesthetic into the scalp. Both this and the glue can cause intense itching. Insecticide-free remedies are preferable for those who suffer from eczema or asthma, young children and pregnant or lactating mums, due to the possible side-effects of malathion, permathrin and phenothrin. A degree of resistance to these chemicals is also becoming a problem. Wet-combing to remove lice and nits using a specialised comb, such as the Nitty Gritty, with the addition of hair conditioner or olive oil, is also
the best treatment if there are any open sores due to scratching. Clean the comb with an old tooth brush or rinse in water between each combing. Olive oil is useful as it suffocates lice, but it can take a few washes before it is completely removed. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary and neem oils to olive oil, and massaging well into wet hair will further help to weaken the lice. Cover with a towel or a shower cap and leave on for at least one hour, then shampoo thoroughly. Remove the eggs with a comb to prevent more lice hatching at a later date, and repeat twice more at 3/5 day intervals. Always carry out a patch test before using, and always protect the eyes. Following treatment, the above oils can be added to shampoos as a natural preventative. Hot wash bedding, and check clothes and soft toys. Warning others, as the PM did, will also help! There is no shame in having head lice! There are a number of herbal treatment lotions and preventative sprays, such as Delacet, Fairytales, Nice ‘n Clear and Not Nice to Lice, available from chemists or online, but wet-combing is still essential to remove the eggs. Delacet claims to kill both, as does Quit Nits, but these may be tricky to find in the UK. Sue Blain, Naturopath
A Brief History of...

Sewers
The oldest known British Neolithic settlement dates back to 2800BC at Skara Brae in the Orkneys. Yet although the villagers then lived in simple stone huts, they built drainage systems and used basic lavatories! Under Roman rule, human waste was drained into cesspits and sewers. The sewers were open to begin with, but the stench was so great that eventually they were covered over. Right up to the 19th Century, Europeans struggled with sewage. Effluent discharge into rivers and streams, plus the overflow old cesspits were two factors responsible for the spread of disease. Germany was the first country to tackle the issue properly. When the city of Hamburg was destroyed by fire in 1843, it was rebuilt to include large-scale underground sewers. Two years later, London’s sewers were redesigned by Sir Joseph Bazalgette. He was appointed Chief Engineer to the Metropolitan Board of Works. His sewers intercepted the city’s streams, and pumping stations helped to carry the waste to outfalls north and south of the capital. Bazelgette’s sewer system is still in use today.

This month - Miniature narcissi Think of daffodils and you’ll probably think of the large yellow variety. They look fabulous while in flower, but can present some problems for small gardens. They are tall, unstable in high winds, heavy rains and snowfall, and they produce masses of green foliage which must be left to die down for six weeks after flowering. Only then can you shear them off to ground level. Miniature narcissi however were made for small suburban plots. They are under 12 inches / 30cm tall and are much more stable in bad weather, even heavy snow. As a bonus their foliage is neat so not particularly unsightly during the dying-down period. Just like the big varieties, if you plant them now they will provide pleasure for many years. All daffs, be they large or dwarf, need a good start. Make a hole roughly four times deeper than the bulb. It will seem like overkill, but the biggest mistake most gardeners make with bulbs is shallow planting. They will still flower well during the first seasons, but because they are too near the surface, they will find it difficult to take in enough nutrients and water to make reserves for the subsequent years. The result will be a show of green leaves and not much else!
So plant them deep and they’ll return year on year, looking more beautiful each time. Another great way to enjoy miniature narcissi is to plant them in pots. 25cm /10 inch pots are about the right size. Put some drainage material in the bottom then fill with potting compost. Plant the bulbs just below the surface then stand the pot in the shelter of a wall. Water the compost when it looks dry. Come the spring you should enjoy a pot full of colour. Once they’ve finished flowering you can plant them more deeply outside and they’ll continue to flower each year. Miniature Narcissi Suggestions ‘Minnow’ - A profusion of multi-headed lemon-yellow flowers. ‘Jetfire’ - Bright orange trumpet and deep yellow petals. ‘Cotinga’ - Dainty ivory flowers with petals that look like they’re windswept backwards and trumpet flushed with apricot. Very unusual. ‘Golden Bells’ - Free-flowering with a large trumpet. These are just suggestions. You can’t really go wrong with any miniature narcissi. The only problem you’ll have is deciding where to plant them all!
Back to School
Suki North has written her checklist Whether you view the end of the summer holidays with sadness or a sense of relief, there’s a lot to do before that new school term starts. Clothing. You’ve already bought all uniform items, including shoes and bags, haven’t you? Hopefully everything has been tried on recently. Children grow, often very suddenly, and usually during the first week of term! Now label everything. Iron-on labels save time, but can peel off after a few washes. Make sure you have spares.
equipment, musical instruments, shoes etc. ‘live’ there at all times. No more time-wasting and morning stress, scouring the place frantically for missing items. Well that’s the theory…it must be worth a try! Get as much as possible ready the night before. A calendar or timetable for each child will help everyone be more organised. Thinking caps. Available online now. Oh how I wish this was true.
Stationery. What child doesn’t love a new, filled pencil case. It gets the school year off to a good start. Buy a few extras too so they’re available for when junior suddenly announces “I can’t possibly go to school because my favourite pen is missing”. Hassle-free mornings. Create an area near the door for all school items. Ensure all bags, sports

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BRAMLEY & WICKERSLEY LIONS
Bramley and Wickersley Lions Club Watch Out! There’s a Lion About
Firstly a BIG thank you to everyone who is making Bramley and Wickersley Lions a great success. It’s fantastic to see new faces at our meetings especially our own Lion who was on hand to give a warm and unexpected welcome to would be members at our last meeting. Very soon we will be officially launching the club when we get our Charter from Lions Clubs International Foundation who are totally amazed at what we have achieved in such short time. Our FUNdraising activities are about to hit the streets, firstly with a great stall full of fantastic games at the Bramley Carnival on Saturday 3rd September where our newly appointed tame lion will be on the prowl followed later by a quiz night at the Three Horse Shoes and a pie and pea supper. We’ve also been busy talking to Father Christmas who is eager to visit to our neighbourhood in December and meet all the children, big as well as small but, unfortunately he can’t bring his sleigh, so if you can help us build our own or help us with parts we’d love to hear from you, we need either an old caravan or a large trailer or even better its chassis, large sheets of wood and plastic, box metal, rope lights, a generator and more importantly some labour so if you have welding, carpentry or sign writing skills and want to help to bring joy to local faces please give us a call on 07505 914 080 or email us on lions@bwlions.org.uk, and help us make Christmas special this year. We also need your help with unwanted gifts / presents / games that we can use for raffle 20
prizes no matter the size so please check your drawers and cupboards and free up that space, your donation will raise vital funds that will put sparkle back to faces of people in need. Remember every penny we raise we give back to helping needy people / organisations in your community. To find out more of what we do please visit our website www.bwlions.org.uk which is constantly updated or come along to our stall at the Bramley Carnival for a chat and meet our team of dedicated helpers. We meet on the 1st and 4th Thursday of the month at the Three Horseshoes in Wickersley at 8.00pm so why not come along and see for yourself the passion we have, you’ll get a warm welcome and your involvement will help improve the quality of life for many people, remember that we are just Ordinary People that do Amazing things for the community of Bramley and Wickersley. About Lions With 18,000 members in the UK and 1.45 million worldwide, Lions make a huge difference in their local communities. Lions Clubs principal aim is to help and fund for those in need, whilst enjoying the satisfaction, fellowship and fun that can be derived from taking part. Lion Club members are dedicated to improving the quality of life for many people less fortunate than themselves within their communities.

Community SPOT LIGHT ON RECIPE OF THE MONTH & PRICES
Apple Crisp - Perfect Autumnal Food Serves 4-6. Preparation time 30 minutes. Cooking time 30-40minutes. 1) Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas Mark 6. Toss the apples with half the cinnamon, the lemon juice, and 1 tbsp of the brown sugar. Place the fruit mixture into a lightly buttered 9-inch / 22cm round baking pan. 2) Combine all the other ingredients, including remaining cinnamon and brown sugar, in the container of a food processor and pulse a few times. Process for a few seconds more until everything is roughly incorporated. If you do not have a food processor, soften the butter slightly, and toss together the dry ingredients, then work in the butter with your finger-tips, a pastry blender, or a fork. 3) Spread the topping over the apples and bake 30-40 minutes, until the topping is browned and the apples are tender. Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature with cream or ice cream.
Ingredients • 900g / 2lb apples, peeled, cored and sliced apples (you will probably need 1.5K / 3lb g of whole apples to achieve this) • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • Juice of 1/2 lemon • 115g / 4oz brown sugar • 75g / 3oz butter, cut into bits • 40g / 1.5oz cup rolled oats • 75g / 3oz plain flour • 25g / 1oz flaked almonds (optional)

Community SPOT LIGHT ON BACK AGAIN
Back Again Solving back pain
Britain is a nation of bad-back sufferers. Four out of five of us are affected by chronic lower-back pain during our lives, and according to the Brain and Spine foundation it accounts for 5% of sick days. The term ‘bad back’ describes everything from a torn disc to a compressed spine. Poor posture is the cause of many back problems. It sounds odd, but the sudden pain we might experience when lifting a heavy object is not caused by the act of lifting, but by the 30-odd years of sitting badly that preceded it! Drivers and office workers are the most susceptible to lower back pain. When we sit at a work station we tend to hunch, forcing our spine into a C shape. Sitting properly means that your thighs are parallel to the floor and your feet are flat (you may need a thick book to raise your feet slightly to achieve this). Your screen should be just below eye level so you don’t have to stoop or stretch to see it. In this position your spine forms the correct S shape and your weight is distributed correctly. When driving, our back should be relaxed into the notch of the seat back, which should be angled at 10-15 degrees from vertical. Our elbows should be comfortably bent by 70-80 degrees and our arms should be relaxed. Anyone who sits for much of the day might want
to invest in an orthopaedic lumbar support like the eezzeebak, which can be attached to any chair, including a car seat, and which encourages correct posture, helping to reduce back pain. Surprisingly, the best treatment for back pain is exercise, not rest. This is because movement increases the blood supply to the spine joints, nerves and surrounding muscles. Improving stomach muscle tone helps to support the spine and so reduce back pain. Gentle exercise such as walking, cycling and swimming is best. Pilates and Yoga are also good as they improve core strength. Osteopaths can be very helpful if pain is acute. Don’t forget that a regular maintenance check up once every six months or so can keep back-pain at bay. Acupuncture has also been found to be useful for reducing inflammation and relaxing deep tissue muscles in spasm. The good news is that only 1% of back pain cases require surgery, usually for a trapped nerve or a damaged disc. Problems like tumours or serious nerve damage do occur, but are extremely rare. However, if you suffer with back pain, it is always a good idea to book an examination with your GP prior to making any lifestyle changes.
Three Simple Exercises to relieve back pain In order to achieve a strong, healthy, stable back, regular exercise is required. The exercises should strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, and also the abdominal and oblique muscles that encircle the trunk like a corset. Those of us stuck at desks for most of our working day can try these exercises whenever we have a few minutes spare. Try 10-15 repetitions and hold each position for a count of 15. 1. While sitting at your desk, put feet flat on the floor and hands on the edge of the desk. Push back, arching your spine into a convex shape, then reversing it into a concave position.
elbows to support upper body and, using abdominal strength, lift heels while keeping the back straight. 3. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, about half a metre from a wall. Face the wall and lean against it using hands, the back should be straight. Reach up with right arm and simultaneously lift left leg backwards and upwards. Repeat on the opposite side.
2. Stand about 30cm from a wall and place hands against the surface at shoulder height. Bend

Community SPOT LIGHT ON A GOOD READ & PUZZLE SOLUTIONS
A Good Read
The Distant Hours – Kate Morton
Fifty years after it was posted, a letter arrives for Edie Burchill’s mother. Its effect is immediate and obvious, but the two have never shared their secrets and Edie remains in the dark about why this unexpected voice from the past has affected her mother so deeply. As she attempts to find out, she discovers a link between the letter and her favourite childhood story, The True History of the Mud Man – both of which have originated from Milderhurst Castle, still home to the mysterious and fascinating Blythe sisters. Morton cleverly juggles a number of narratives in this long and complex tale – Edie begins and ends the story, but in between several voices rise convincingly from the page. Each has their own tragedy: Percy Blythe, the eldest sister, inexorably linked to the castle; Saffy, her twin, dreaming of escape; Juniper, still waiting for her lost lover; and the lover himself, Thomas Cavill, doomed never to arrive. Their stories are true and tender and carefully, gradually revealed, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the final pages. Equally vivid are the minor characters – even those like Raymond Blythe, who never actually appear to us. This is a book about love, madness, dreams and the supreme power of the written word. Once again, Morton shows how well she can pull the various threads of her tapestry together, drawing us on until we feel we are really there at Milderhurst, watching as the shadows form themselves into ghosts and suggestions. A haunting and beautifully told story, which merits reading and re-reading.

The Swish of the Curtain – Pamela Brown Written in 1941, The Swish of the Curtain, the story of seven children who set up their own theatre company, is hopelessly out of date in these days of TV talent shows, pre-teen acting classes and YouTube - ‘Why don’t they all just go on Britain’s Got Talent?’ However, it remains one of my favourite books, and any child reading it at just the right age will find themselves fully absorbed in this charming, amusing novel. There are two secrets to the book’s appeal. The first is in the writing: Pamela Brown was only 14 when she completed it, and the adventure rolls along at a cracking pace, from the discovery of an old abandoned hall, its conversion to a theatre, and a series of successful shows. Each of these is depicted so vividly, that the reader could actually be sitting in the audience and watching the Blue Doors perform. And there is the second secret – the seven main characters are believable and sympathetic from the very start. Each reader will be able to identify themselves with at least one of them – Sandra, the placid, domestic core of the group, Vicky the acrobat, Jeremy the musician, or Bulldog the clown...each has their own particular charm, and most importantly their own small, significant dream. Honestly, once you have bought this, and before you pass it on to the child of your choice – read it. If it doesn’t make you long for the uncomplicated days of raspberry shakes in milk bars, when jazz was considered rather daring, even if you never experienced those things first time round, then you have no soul! Community SPOT LIGHT ON WHAT IS WIFI? & COMPETITION
What IS WiFi? Wonder no more…
Until we decided to drag our home computer system kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, I had no idea what Wi-Fi was. It might as well have been witchcraft for all I understood about it. I was intimidated by all the acronyms involved: Wi-Fi, WLAN and WAP…and what on earth was a ‘router’? Once it was all explained though it was actually quite straightforward, so if anyone is hesitating about what Wi-Fi is, why it might be useful, and how to go about installing it, read on. This month we’re explaining the basics. Wi-Fi is simply a way of obtaining broadband internet without wires. In order to do this you need to create a wireless local area network (known as a WLAN) in your home or office. A WLAN is a little zone where your personal computer, smart phone or games console can wirelessly access broadband internet. First you need a wireless transmitter. This is also known as a wireless access point (WAP). This receives the information from the internet via your broadband connection, and converts that information into a radio signal. It sends this signal to your computer, which receives it via something called a wireless adapter, and converts it back to its original form. The whole process also works in reverse, so that the computer can send information back again. Nowadays this transmitter is generally part of another device known as a router. The router is the device which takes the single broadband internet account and allows it to be used by two or more computers or smart phones etc. Most modern routers also contain a modem, which allows it to be plugged directly into a b ro a d b a n d - e n a b l e d phone line, using only
one socket and eliminating cable clutter. This also means that it doesn’t need to be right next to your PC. However, wireless strength is heavily dependent on proximity, so try to make sure that no solid walls are between the router and the PC. If your house is large, the router will need to be more powerful than if you live in a small apartment. You also need a Wi-Fi adapter on every device you’re planning to use on the Wi-Fi system. Mostly these are in-built on modern equipment, so check first to see whether you need to buy one. Wireless signals have different specifications. All are compatible with each other, but for best performance make sure any equipment you buy is ‘n’ specified, as this provides the strongest, fastest signal. Next month we will discuss how to go about setting up your system.
