O editor’s letter

On the Catwalk

The life of a model is not easy but the life of a black model is even less easy than that of a white model. While more designers have been seen casting more black models on the runway, there is still a majority of white faces walking the runway. And so it is such a big deal for Mayowa Nicholas and Victor Ndigwe, in their very early careers to work with, and walk for fashion power houses such as Balmain, Christian Dior, MuiMui, Dolce and Gabbana, Hermes, Loewe. Since they won the face of Elite competition Nigeria in 2014, both Mayowa and Victor have continued to set standards for aspiring models here in Nigeria. So the big question is, what makes one model stand out from the next? Could it be, having that presence,

that X Factor? This edition, playing host to Mayowa and Victor, we tried to find out. And, contrary to popular opinion, we know that models are quite intelligent and good actors, or how else are they able to interpret a look with such precision? Also in this issue, we go off air with Kaylah Oniwo and Vimbai Mutinhri. Both media girls talk about their lives and style. In the beauty segment, Bryan Okwara is our cover star, he opens up about his career and stand on men’s makeup, you have to read his story. As always we have loads of style inspiration and guide specially for you.

Trends

WE LOVE Trends come and go and that , we have come to know in the world of fashion. Paying attention to trends as time goes by is very important so as to refrain from being left behind by fashion itself. Although trends do change they don’t all change at once, a few are left behind and refurbished to look better.

Pink

Sequin

Pink seems to be one colour to look forward to this 2017, from powder pink to pink bismol, this is a must have for the year.

This is one trend that was rocked for most of 2016, making an outfit glamourous in every way, we hope to see more of it in 2017 as well as all the new ways to pull sequin off.

Pyjamas

Slinky robes and posh pykamas have been tempting us to go all night feeling comfortable and just flop into bed. This trend reared its head in 2016 and warmed its way into the hearts of of many. We look forward to seeing how it would fare this 2017

Ruffles

Ruffles were a huge part of 2016’s summer as well as the rest of the year, and it seems they aren’t going anywhere, as the trend seems to be waxing strong this year. Ruffles have reigned supreme for quite a while and it would be no no surprise if they stay.

Sleeves Sleeves have always been a part of every outfit and now as time goes on, they get longer, bigger and more stylish. We look forward to seeing what 2017 has in store for statement sleeves.

Colour Play

Words by: Smart Courage

When it comes to colour pairings for 2017, there is one combination that we spotted again and again fuchsia clashing with scarlet red. The key to mastering this look is to avoid prints, stick to statement colourblock pieces and embrace unexpected layering to create maximum impact.

MAYOWA

NICHOLAS MAGIC OF THE BLACK

UNICORN REPORT BY: Ifeanyi Ogbo

here’s something about Mayowa Nicholas that evokes the lost glamour of the nineties supermodel era, perhaps it’s in the way she mirrors the ample lips of Naomi Campbell, the simple elegance of Cindy Crawford and the perfect runway physique of Linda Evangelista or perhaps it’s just a gift the self-identified unicorn was born with . Whatever the reason may be, Mayowa is definitely one of the most striking models of this new era.

Growing up as the eldest in a family of four residing in the Lagos suburbs, young Mayowa wanted to grow up to become an accountant or a banker. “Fashion wasn’t really something I wanted to venture into and modeling wasn’t on the list at all until I was scouted in 2014” she admits 2014 turned out to be the year the magic of the unicorn was unraveled, Mayowa won the Elite Model Look Nigeria, 2014 and became a top 10 finalist at the Elite Model Look Competition Worldwide finale in China. She was automatically signed on to Elite Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Beth Model Management (mother agency) and a host of others. Since her Elite Model Look Nigeria win, Mayowa has surprised and thrilled

many by clinching many firsts in the international scene. She has been featured in Yves Saint Laurent’s monochrome campaign and also in Miu Miu fall/winter 2016 ad making her the first Nigerian model to be associated with both brands in that light. Mayowa was also seen strutting her game in Dolce and Gabannna’s Fall/ Winter 2016-2017 campaign, also the first Nigerian model to be part of such a campaign. She was listed in Vogue as one of the top models to watch (alongside Kendall Jenner), and it wasn’t long before she featured in a fashion editorial for the famous fashion magazine. She has been associated with big brands such as Hermes, Balmain, Calvin Klein, Ralph and Russo, Kenzo and many more.

The experience has been amazing; Meeting new friends, working with great people, it has been an awesome career so far and I’m having fun.”

personal style as African chic, she is ever fascinated by the varying dynamics of fashion in different climes and lands. “I think the common denominator in the fashion sense embraced by French women is they always go with the trend. For example you go to Paris and see the style there is very chic and sophisticated which I love. Meanwhile in London it’s more of a strong look and very street-style oriented, same as New York. In Nigeria the women fashion sense is more about glamour, the bigger the better; blings, sequins, bold colors, African prints and all that jazz. n an industry that has been previously attacked for body shaming and being subtly racist, Mayowa is appreciative of the fashion world’s increasingly more progressive approach in diversity and accepting different body types. Staying true to herself, Mayowa relays that she loves her hair short “My hair has always been neck length and I appreciate the fact that there has never been a complaint about my hair since when I have been modeling in Europe.” She accredits yoga and water as her go-to-fitness/beauty routine. “I love yoga! It’s really good for relaxation and fitness. For my beauty routine, I drink lots

of water and indulge in an oatmeal face mask.” Mayowa lists her phone, lip balm, water, bible and moisturizer as five things she can’t live without. Keeping her love for figures in mind, she reveals she’ll still go back to school, “I love accounting so I will definitely go back to university to pursue that.” Till then Mayowa looks set to hit more firsts and break more records in her modelling career. What can stop an inspired and determined black girl? Nothing. The world is ready, and our eyes and cameras are fixed on the unicorn.

ryan walked into the studio looking none the worse for wear considering he just got off a plane no longer than two hours before the shoot. After a few introductions to the team on set, he got down to business very quickly and soon had most of the room in smiles, at ease with his interpretation and understanding of the project at hand. Bryan IkennaOkwarashot to fame after he won the first ever Mr. Nigeria competition in 2007. Since then he has gone on to star in different big screen movies and is currently the brand ambassador for the cocktail brand Martini. He has worked in various parts of the entertainment business counting modelling, pageantry and acting, and his transition through these different facets of the industry required he follow trends when necessary, setting the pace and rebranding from one industry to the other – It doesn’t hurt to look good too. We couldn’t help it, we looked him over wondering how he was able to jump right into meetings with his busy schedule and all the traveling involved and does he ever find time to workout? “I take short naps in between trips. A cup of coffee with honey, fresh fruits and a lot of water for hydration, while going over my script or document.” He says. “I have to keep a fit and able body so I make sure to check into a hotel with a fitness and health centre, or I perform basic routines like sit-ups and push-ups in my room.” As a brand ambassador, keeping his face and skin in great

condition is very important to him but he’s not very big on the use of products. His big secret for great looking skin is “Basically just personal hygiene. Skin oils multivitamin tablets and lots of effervescent vitamin C drinks.” Bryans’ hair came up during the shoot, as he was asked to let it down by one of the stylists so as not to look ‘too Bryan.’ “Why don’t you try not looking too you?” He retorted amiably, eliciting laughter from the entire team. Being a good sport, he made like Rapunzel and let his hair down and the pictures…. Amazing! He obviously takes care of his dreadlocks, going in for a regular trim and relock when needed. He washes it twice a week with scented hair oils and a good moisturizer. “I keep it long and dark with my little secret too.” He laughs. On the fat chance that you were wondering,Bryan’s favorite perfume is Bvlgari’s Men in Black, but he’d settle for most male fragrances. He also has a specific diet that’s never failed him yet, consisting of low carbs and high protein foods, so let’s do away with the plans for baking him a big heart shaped cake for Easter. In recent times more men have begun to pay attention to grooming, and so it was no surprise when Tom Ford recently released a campaign promoting cosmetics for men. What better timing for this new trend to arrive, our cover personality happens to be a man this issue so we took a shot at the question relating to men’scosmetics, and our cover star supports it fully. “It’s about time. you, that special, unique thing that baffles whoever sees it… Beauty is a statement that usually starts from the inside before it is expressed as a compliment or hidden as admiration. Beauty is uncanny, yet interesting. Beauty is magical.”

Trend to try lat, asymmetrical, thin, and barely there, brows have the ability to completely change how we look, so it’s little wonder why our obsession has reached peaked fever.

While some of us are blessed with naturally perfect brows, quite a number of us need a little bit of help to get the perfect eyebrows for our face. In our eyebrow obsessed world, microblading is fantastic when wanting to fully reconstruct, define or fill in gaps in over plucked brows. Guess what?! it lasts up to 24 months! Cool right? Semi permanent tattooing is the way to go!

How microblading (semi permanent tattoo) differs from permanent tattooing

Instead of a vibrating tattoo needle, a special manual Microblading pen & a blade is used to draw strokes onto the already stencilled eyebrow. It’s an extremely meticulous process which takes the human error out of the traditional needle & vibrating gun technique. Thanks to the hand-drawn technique,

results are a far cry from the old-fashioned version. We have seen horrific situations where the ink from 6-15yrs old tattoos oxidises to green or blue even red but with the Microblading technique there’s little or no room for discolouration. What’s more, because the pigment is inserted at such a superficial depth— epidermis, there will be little or no bleeding.

Contraindications for Microblading Microblading cannot be performed if you are; pregnant,

lactating, epileptic, haemophilic, diabetic, prone to scarring, psoriatic or have severe allergies. Just to mention a few but the list is not limited to the above mentioned ailments. Usually a consultation is necessary prior to the procedure to rule out any possibilities of an adverse reaction, contra-action or contraindications. Pain is relative. Some feel more than others. Overall it feels like little scratches. You feel it, but it’s not unbearable. It’s not like having a baby....lol. A topical numbing cream and tops ups are applied throughout the process to dull the discomfort.

Healing time

The best part about the technique is that there is no down time. Your new set of brows will be ready for a selfie right after. Yup! No swelling. The healing process is different for everyone, on an average it takes about 3-4wks. After a month we recommend a 1hr touch-up. Yearly touch ups are also recommended to maintain colour, shape & definition. So that’s the summary of the “wild & new” trend that has got women tattooing their faces!

It’s an extremely meticulous process which takes the human error out of the traditional needle & vibrating gun technique.

think every female would understand the fact that lipsticks are an essential and almost have a place in our daily lives; and just for record purposes, matte lipsticks have the crown right now. Isn’t it great that you can go to an event and drink water and eat chicken nuggets and your lipstick stays untouched? Yes, there are basic shades and colours you should have; so we would quickly talk about that as relates to complexion and shape (size) of your lips:

COMPLEXION:

J

ust in case you are still unsure about your skin tone, here are some pointers; examine your skin in natural light; look at the colour of your veins on the inside of your wrist; try on gold and silver jewelry; and notice how your skin reacts to the sun.

cf

|40|BB

Look 1

Find a color that is one two shades deeper than your natural lip color; test with your lower lip alone and be sure the shades are not different.

Before 2 You Lip

Walk in line with your undertone and complexion: For light skin; choose pink, peach and nudes. For medium-tone, try rose, mauve, or berry shades. For tan skin, avoid browns and purples and go for colors with an orange undertone like coral, or deep pink. For dark complexion, try browns or purples like walnut, caramel, plum, or wine.

What you didn’t know about SIZE: lipsticks C

ontrary to popular belief, it is actually glossy and shimmering shades that make your lips appear fuller, while the dark shades and matte BYLINE: HANSON KEREN texture make your lips smaller; so if you already have full lips, no need to gloss up and vice versa CF

PS: You should test a lipstick before you buy it and make sure you have no makeup on.

I have learnt to live in every moment and celebrate every achievement as though it is the peak of my career, after all you’re only as good as your last show.” Knowing that culture influences fashion, she is proud to be from Africa, one of the fashion hubs of the world. Presenting, a powerful and inspiring woman, a selfacclaimed material girl but one not ruled by money or a love for it. She doesn’t do regrets, nor does she believe in them as she is sure that all things in her life happened in their seasons, according to her unique journey and she is inspired by anything Naomi Campbell, whom she believes is the absolute queen of angles and movement. Know who she is? You guessed it, Vimbai Mutinhiri. The huge success of the Zimbabwean model, actress and media personality came riding in like an overpowering tsunami after her appearance on the sixth season of the annual reality TV show, Big Brother Africa, and Vimbai Mutinhiri is still ever grateful for her appearance on the show. “Big Brother Africa Amplified launched me! If not for that platform, I’m not sure my career would have rolled out the same way it has. It gave me a world of exposure and the

He’s my bae all day every day.” She announced her decision to no longer host the AMVCAs early in 2016, 3 years after its inception, deciding instead to concentrate on her reality TV show ‘Miss Vimbai Travels’. “I turn 30 this year, so I have so many exciting campaigns planned to connect with women and girls across the continent. I am using my birthday to celebrate our daily achievements as young African women. I want to use the gift of another year added to my life to pour into other people. It is going to be a fun ride!” Apart from this mystery man that makes her worthy of our envy, Vimbai cannot live without her phone, internet, a TV, green tea and her faith bracelet for meditation. She plans to keep working on motivating and reaching out to young ladies that admire her. Laughing, she said, “I definitely have a lot of Mary Jane in me! (Gabrielle Union’s character in the BET series being Mary Jane); fierce boss lady by day, then feminine, gentle and dramatic lover by night.” At this point we had to join in her laughter.

cultures and traditions from Europe, Asia and across Africa. “I have a very open heart and mind towards taking ownership of all cultures. The things I detest most about any culture are inciting views that cause people to hate other people. I wish we could evolve from “them and us” mentalities particularly between tribes in African culture. Things I am most proud of about being African is the fact that we can all sit at a table and use our hands to eat out of the same bowl. It’s so pure and innocent. South Africans call it the spirit of ‘ubuntu’.” The popular media personality takes her fashion seriously and her style sense which she describes as quirky evolving into classic, timeless and sophisticated looks, has been hailed numerous times as one of the most fashionable in the industry. It is a surprise to learn that this has not always been the case for her. “I have had so many fashion faux pas!” She exclaims excitedly, “but you probably didn’t even notice because I own everything in the moment. You know we do the best with what we know, then when we know better we also do better.” In three words she would describe her style as, “First. Only. Different.” Vimbai believes that experiences are a large source of inspiration, as everything she encounters influences her perspective and her creative process. She stays inspired by traveling often and not taking any of her experiences for granted, no matter how commonplace they seem. She also reads at least 2 books a month. Talk about dedication! She says,”I am most passionate about pursuing my purpose and leaving an indelible mark of my presence wherever I set foot. That is my reason for waking up in the morning… even when I feel like I can’t go on, it’s what reminds me that my reason for breathing is bigger than me. My mission drives me.” Among the male folk, she is enjoying the growing ‘#beardgang’ and ‘#fitfam’ movements - features we assume her partner has, as she has somehow kept him out of the eyes of the public. “My partner has chosen not to lead a public life so I spare him the

aylah Oniwo is the face that embodies the sultry smooth voice sailing out of your radio sets co-hosting great shows like “The Road Show,” “Beauty, Lifestyle and PartyMix,” and her very own show “Catwalk with Kaylah.”In this tell-it-all interview with Complete Fashion,Kaylah leaves out nothing as we tried to know her better.

“I wanted to be an accountant, I was inspired by my aunt’s personality as a top accountant in a bank. I studied Banking and Finance at the university for 4 years till I got my degree but music and radio was something I always loved. I auditioned at different radio stations but I had my eyes set on Cool FM. I was determined and focused till I was eventually chosen.” Kaylahs’ friendly and easygoing nature is apparent in the incredible chemistry she shares with her co-host, Freeze, on their show “The Road Show.” She has learnt to tolerate, respect and encourage her friends when needed. “Chemistry is so important and I am grateful for Freeze. If I were

to air a show with someone else it would be N6. We have a good relationship off air so that would definitely be a good option… I think we would be fun.” Talking about fashion, a venture that requires the eyes, on a radio show is something that’s never been done before. Imagine how she made it work. “I do this via social media. I direct listeners to platforms where I have posted everything I intend to talk about, and engage the audience real time. It definitely worked. Now, I stream my show live, which has gotten the listeners even more excited.” Kaylah doesn’t have a problem hosting 3 radio shows that focus on issues that are rarely ever in sync. On “The Road Show”, she talks about any trending topic and engages listeners with her co-host Freeze. Then there is “Catwalk with Kaylah” which is all about fashion, runways, designers and the ones to watch in the fashion industry. And finally “Beauty, Lifestyle and PartyMix” with DJ Xclusive, a show that as the name implies, is a unique blend of these three topics. She carries out extensive research before each show and the passion with which she discusses the topics on any of them tells you just how much she loves and enjoys her job. She obviously intends to be in radio for a long time.

“I have learnt to live in every moment and celebrate every achievement as though it is the peak of my career.”

“It’s my first love, I would love to be on TV as well, that should be fun!” In recent times when we have all sorts of social media platforms to keep up with, Kaylah makes out time to reach all of her fans on each platform. She also blogs and is in talks with a production company for a TV show. Yes, we are thinking the same question you are; is there any day this woman doesn’t want to take on the world? “We are all human and we have our days,” she laughs, “but I try to make it work because we have millions of listeners who tune in waiting for us to make them really happy. My most challenging time was when I learned I had lost a very good friend a few minutes before going on air. I was shattered but I braced myself. It was tough but I had to do it!” This multi-talented RJ got a year older on the 22nd of January and we cannot wait to see what she gets up to the rest of the year, perhaps she might try her hand at acting, seeing as she studied at the Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva Academy of the Performing Arts. “I love acting, it requires your time and commitment to deliver perfectly so I’m not sure it’s something I want to take on fully since I have other interests… I will definitely go where God leads.” Kaylah doesn’t just work hard though, she plays hard at well; winning a treasure hunt at the opening of the Nigerian Floor at The Massive hotel Dune, in Abuja. You’ll usually find her in a pair of her favourite Levi sneakers thinking up a way to do something new and having the time of her life in the process.

He’s a designers favorite that has rocked the runway for some of the world’s most celebrated fashion brands like Ermenegildo Zegna, Dolce&Gabbana, Fendi, Versace, Hermès, Balmain and many more. Last year he was chosen by Missoni heir and Creative Director, Angela Missoni, to be the face of the Italian brand’s spring/summer 2016 ad campaign. Not too shabby for Victor Ndigwe, the Anambra State indigene who was only eighteen when he won the Nigerian elite model look competition in 2014, a victory that changed the trajectory of his life. “I found out about the Elite Model Look competition through my sister. We were meant to go to the casting together, but she ended up having exams,” the 6”1 model shares when looking back at the genesis of his modelling career. Since his win and representation of Nigeria in the elite International finale, He has been signed to Elite model management across all major fashion capitals. Victor, the self-titled “phoenix” has ascribed his success to hard work. “It hasn’t come as easy as it looks, I do work hard. I’m equally a spontaneous person, so that helps too” When he isn’t strutting his stuff for cameras and big brands, Victor is busy working on his music. His music, an eclectic and groovy take on hip-hop, is largely influenced by Burna Boy. “ I like Burna Boy’s music a lot so it’s quite

F THANK YOU to everyone in love with my character ‘Mide’ and to everyone watching and loving Skinny girl in transit.

given to him by stylist Yolanda Okereke.

His character ‘Mide’ has won the hearts of many who watch the web series and he wishes to say, “THANK YOU to everyone in love with my character Mide and to everyone watching and loving Skinny girl in transit”. His all-time desire to be a wealthy, young, hardworking man as well as the cooperation from co-actors of the show who always have their A-game on, has made it easy to portray his character on the show.

Ayoola considers himself a trendsetter and hopes to do great things in both industries, “Following trends are overrated. I’m here to represent a new wave and by God’s grace, I will”.

Ayoola came into limelight in 2012 after going through so many challenges auditioning for several talent shows and being rejected, until he finally won Project Fame. His first screen appearance came from acting in 2010, when he got on Tinsel as “Lucky Osuji” (a character fashioned after the popular Steve Urkle of the ABC/ CBS sitcom, Family Matters). He considers it all a blessing, as the experiences made him stronger and taught him that consistence is key and also provided him with first hand learning experience.

He let us in on a couple of projects he’s working on, some of which are: An AuderySilver TV series “BankersNGR”, An Mnet TV series “Jemeji”,A Derwin feature film “Little Bits of Happy”, A Tribe85 productions film “Isoken”, An NdaniTV production “gidi up” amongst others.

Sharing a passion for two things (music and acting) can’t be easy but Ayoola has found a way to merge both worlds with finesse, making the hard decisions of when to start and when to stop or make a switch. “I am deeply passionate about both, and I feel

As the saying goes “dress the way you want to be addressed” and although comfort is sacrificed on the altar of style it is still important to be comfortable. Behind the scenes you can be sure to find him in his plain shirts, pants/shorts paired with a simple footwear and his most prized accessory is a chain

Ayoola is of the opinion that colour blocking is a very daring trend and represents the pop culture generation, who are bold and aren’t afraid to try new things. “We see things differently, we would rather make mistakes trying, than sit around doing nothing. Colour is everything, life is beautiful, and if our fashion can represent that, then by all means”. On the controversy about Tom Ford’s recently released male cosmetic line, he said “Haha there’s nothing wrong with that. As long as we don’t get to the point where dudes would spend forever making themselves up, now that will be funny”. In the course of our chat with Ayoola, he revealed that he

WEAR YOUR

Words The Plain white t-shirt will always be king. its closest cousin “the graphic shirt” might be a rebel, but with a cause. Graphic shirts give room for free expression, give off an edgy vibe and are the wardrobe darlings of most creatives. Featuring prominently in the runway collections of Ti Nathan and Maxivive at the recently concluded Lagos design and fashion week, it’s quite evident that graphic tees are here to stay. Here are ways to rock this too-cool-for-school trend without looking like a schoolboy

Keep The Graphics Neat:

it’s best to stick with two- or three-color designs that are as fresh as a pop art painting, not cluttered like a three year old’s drawing book. A simple visual gives off a striking vibe and is more memorable than a

cartoonish jamboree.

Make It Memorable: How to look different from every other guy wearing a graphic tee? One line: make it memorable. Go for a quote, symbol or motif that’s inspiring and fun. Celebrate your heritage, go retro, and keep it quirky but classy. If you stand for something, your shirt can be a great medium to spread your message. Less Colourful Accessories: If you’re wearing a graphic tee, leave the fancy cap, the patterned shoes and the rainbow-colored pants at home. Your graphic t-shirt is already a statement, there is no need to overcomplicate things CF

lorem | lpsum |59|

cf

Keep It Fitted: Go for a shape and a size that complements your body build preferably a not too tight, not too loose straight fit that won’t squeeze your sides (and accentuate the bulge that speaks of the many times you’ve eaten fufu in the past). When it comes to length, a tee should hit about halfway down your pant zipper. Anything longer and it could just pass for a dress.
