t really feels like winter has arrived and made itself at home. The days may be getting longer, but summer still feels a very long way off. That’s why it’s always so lovely to see the first of the snowdrops poking through – that’s a sure sign that spring is on its way. We’re very lucky around Stamford to have some beautiful gardens to visit to see snowdrops – Easton Walled Gardens, Deene Park, and if you’re prepared to drive a little further; Anglesey Abbey. February also means Valentine’s Day. We’ve been searching for some quirky alternatives to the usual jewellery, flowers and lingerie; anyone fancy a hot air balloon ride? Our wine guru, Leigh Johnson has also picked out a couple of wines that speak the language of love. Unfortunately winter often means coughs, colds and if you’re unlucky; the flu. We’ve put together some simple tips to keep you and your family fit and healthy over winter. And not forgetting about our hair and skin; we’ve been talking to some of the salons around Stamford to hear what the experts say on maintaining a healthy glow when the weather is so cold. We’ve given our babies and tots calendar a facelift this month and will be including more family features in the coming months to appeal to families with children of all ages. You’ll start to see more new features over the next few months; so watch this space! And as usual, please get in touch if you have any news or a local event that you’d like to promote.

KDC’s Enterprise Week returns this year from 9 to 13 March and aims to promote business development, entrepreneurial spirit, stimulate business growth and help create new business. There are a wide range of interactive workshops, informative talks and networking in events across Grantham, Stamford and Market Deeping.
Events include blogging for business, getting to grips with Twitter, using LinkedIn, as well as tips on delivering great customer service and telephone techniques. The highlight of the week is a full day business problem-solving experience at Stoke Rochford Hall on Wednesday 11 March. The afternoon will incorporate the final of a novel problem solving event, the ‘Apple Business Challenge’. A £250 cash prize, sponsored by the Federation of Small Businesses, is up for grabs for the
team that designs and builds a vehicle or device capable of transporting the most apples along a 10 metre track. The winning team will transport the most apples from A to B over a two minute period. Full details, entry criteria and closing date are available on the Enterprise Week website. Councillor Frances Cartwright, SKDC’s portfolio holder for grow the economy said: “Here at SKDC we are extremely committed to supporting business growth and development across the district and it’s great to see Enterprise Week back again after such a successful event last March.” A dedicated website with the full programme of events for the week, including how to book for each session, is online at www.skdcenterpriseweek.co.uk.
Come blog with me
S
tamford Concept editor, Michelle Board, will be speaking at Enterprise Week about getting started with blogging. “Blogging really has grown in popularity over the past four or five years and many businesses are now writing very successful blogs,” says Michelle. “A blog is a great way to engage with your customers and give your business a personality, as well as improving your Google ranking.” Michelle will be talking about how to get started writing a blog, what to blog about, growing your readership and her top do's and don'ts of blogging on Monday 9 March at Eventus in Market Deeping, 12pm-2pm. Tickets cost £6 and can be booked online at www.skdcenterpriseweek. co.uk or call the Guildhall Arts Centre on 01476 406158.

New uniform
for Stamford Welland Academy
W
Stamford Welland Academy successfully launched its new brand and logo back in September 2014 at the start of the academic year. As part of the new brand for the school, it was felt important to launch a new uniform which would reflect the new school ethos. Mr Partington, the Principal, believed that the community, as well as local students and parents should be involved in creating the new design.
In October last year the school launched a competition to design the new uniform and were inundated with colourful pictures from students, staff, primary school children and members of the local community. One entrant, Jamie Russon, an ex-student of the school and now a local designer, impressed the school with her designs. Jamie agreed to help the school with compiling a detailed questionnaire based on some of the ideas from the competition. Jamie worked alongside Student Council pupils, Megan Dunstan and Laura Notely, both from Year 11, on the questionnaire. The questionnaire asked detailed questions
relating to blazer colours and styles, skirt design and length, collar choices, ties versus no tie, size and positioning of logos, ways in which the House colour could be shown, as well as special additions for prefects, sports ambassadors and head students. The results from the questionnaire have now been collated and the panel has narrowed down the options to three designs. Louise Warren, transition programme manager for Stamford Welland Academy says: “Having consulted the community on their choices, it became apparent what was important to students wasn’t always important to parents. Whereas parents were more conscious of costs and how easily the garments could be washed, students wanted to look smart and have pride in their House colour being displayed quite prominently. There was also debate on whether girls should wear ties and have a trouser option.”

February and March, allowing members of the public to feel the garments and get a better idea of how the uniform will look. The design with the most votes will be chosen as the new uniform for Stamford Welland Academy. While the public make its final selection, the school is working with local uniform companies to ensure the winning uniform can be designed, manufactured, packaged, ordered and ready at the school for the end of summer term when the new Year 7 students will be assigned to one of the school’s Houses ( Austen, Newton or Da Vinci). It will be then that students from all year groups will be able to collect their new uniform from each of their Houses.
Vote for your favourite design
The three designs will now go to a public vote. You can find details of all three options and how to vote at www.stamfordwellandacademy. org/academy-information/uniform/. On the website you can also find out more about the Uniform Roadshow, when the school will visit a number of venues around Stamford during

ourne and Stamford shoe store, North Shoes, is in the running for two prestigious national accolades. The family firm has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2015 Footwear Industry Awards - men’s independent retailer of the year and children’s independent retailer of the year. It’s the fourth year North Shoes have been shortlisted for the awards, recognised as the shoe retail industry’s ‘Oscars’. They are previous winners of the independent family retailer of the year and ladies’ independent retailer of the year titles. James North, the fifth generation to head up the independent family firm, which also has a store in Westgate, Peterborough, said: “The awards recognise outstanding performance and just to be shortlisted alongside some of the biggest names in shoe retail is an honour for us. It is recognition of our fitting service – all of our staff are trained by the Society of Shoe Fitters – and the fact that we value traditional customer services."
Know your food allergens
N
ew EU rules now coming into force mean all food businesses, including bakeries, delis, cafes, restaurants, takeaways and other food outlets, will need to inform customers if any of 14 allergenic ingredients are present in the food they make or serve. This can be communicated to customers in writing on menus, verbally through explanations by staff or signposted to where or how more information can be found. SKDC is helping food businesses prepare for the new rules with a series of free workshops in Stamford at the Stamford Arts Centre on March 3 at 1pm, April 29 at 6pm, May 12 at 1pm and June 16 at 10am. To request a place on one of these sessions visit www.southkesteven.gov.uk/foodallergens, email healthy@southkesteven.gov.uk or call 01476 406080.

Celebrates 10th anniversary
O
ne of Stamford's leading beauty salons, Equilibrium, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary and has a year full of celebrations planned, including a number of events, promotions and new launches. Samantha, Equilibrium’s owner, when asked how things had changed over the past 10 years since opening, said: "There are certainly a lot more salons in Stamford now than when I first opened in 2005 but I have always tried to stay one step ahead by listening to the needs of our clients; plus we always try to stay up to date with the last technological advances within the beauty and cosmetic industry which is why we have just invested in a new piece of equipment.” The Lipofirm PLUS is the ultimate solution for non-invasive inch loss, body sculpting, cellulite removal and skin tightening providing clients a convenient non-invasive, no downtime, pain free procedure. Treatments can be performed on calves, knees, thighs, buttocks, stomach, arms, back and chin and is equally effective for both men and women. Free places for local students
ON DANCE COURSE W
ildcats Post 16 Academy in Stamford has fully funded places now available for its new full time professional dance course starting in September 2015. These places are fully funded (free of charge) to all qualifying students aged 16-19 (subject to meeting criteria which is non-means tested). Wildcats wants to make these free places available to local young people – transport is also available to students living in various areas including Rutland, Northamptonshire, South Lincolnshire and Peterborough areas.
The course is set up to teach a broad knowledge of dance styles including ballet, tap and commercial alongside theoretical aspects including working freelance and running auditions. Those who are successful in achieving a place will also learn skills required to be able to work within the industry including developing choreography and working within TV and film. The course

takes place in dedicated dance and theatre buildings. Caz Dolby, founder of Wildcats says, “We are really excited about this new course which has been planned to offer a real dance school option to local young people. The course has been written by Wildcats to reflect the changing needs of the industry and prepares students not only technically but also from a business perspective.” To apply for a funded place please call Wildcats on 01780 762000 or email admin@ wildcats-uk.com. These places are limited. Audition dates will be issued on a first come first served basis and Wildcats hope that the places can be filled with local young people who want to benefit from professional teaching locally.
Led by Wildcats’ dance teacher, Vince Williams, the course (in partnership with New College Stamford) offers students aged 16 and over the chance to train with professional teachers with experience in the industry. Vince has extensive experience of working in the dance industry having choreographed many TV, film and theatre shows including Dizzy Rascal, the feature film Nativity 3 and up-and-coming band Catfish and the Bottlemen.

usiness is going well for Stamford’s newest independent estate agent, Nest Estates. Jayne Knights and Matt Payton have created a warm and welcoming office in North Street, and welcome anyone to come in for a chat. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the reception we’ve had,” says Jayne. “There’s no pressure at all when you come in to see us. We’re more than happy to offer any advice whether you want to sell now, or in a year or two’s time. We have good relationships with many local tradesmen, so if you need building work or decorating, we can recommend someone.” FEBRUARY 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 13

CLUB SPOTLIGHT
A Handful of Harmonies S inging and choirs have never been so popular with television programmes such as Britain’s Got Talent and Gareth Malone’s The Choir. Locally, A Handful of Harmonies gives women of all ages the chance to sing as a group in weekly sessions in Stamford, Bourne, Langtoft, Oundle, Spalding, the Deepings and Peterborough.
A Handful of Harmonies is the brainchild of Langtoft local, Andrew Clingo. Andrew has been involved with the Langtoft Players for many years as musical director, and in 2011 he launched a six week ‘learn to sing’ programme for women in Langtoft. It was so popular that he had to put on two sessions – one in Langtoft and one in Bourne. This was how A Handful of Harmonies came about. “There was a real desire from women to have somewhere to sing on a regular basis,” says Andrew. “Now I run seven sessions a week, and we regularly have 30 or 40 women coming along to sing at each session.” The sessions are open to everyone. There are no auditions and no need to sing solo in front of anyone. “We welcome anyone who’d like to sing. There is no need to commit to a certain amount of sessions. You can just come along when and where you wish,” says Andrew. “Some women come to two or three sessions a week, others come just once a week. You put in as much or as little as you like.” Andrew teaches by ear, so there is no need to be able to read music before coming along. “We do sing from sheet music with musical notation, and a lot of women find that they learn to read music just by coming along each week,” says Andrew. On a typical evening, the women spend 15 or 20 minutes warming up; practicing breathing techniques and extending their
1-25_C11.indd 16
range. They then spend the rest of the 90 minute session singing new material or going over previous material. Andrew aims to have something new every session. Everyone is given the chance to sign up to sing in performances. A Handful of Harmonies puts on a lot of charity and fundraising events and has performed at the Key Theatre, Stamford Corn Exchange, Bourne Corn Exchange as well as Christmas fairs and village fetes. “We are invited to sing at many events and anyone can sign up for any performance. There is usually extra practice for performances, but we make this clear at the beginning,” says Andrew. Having fun is a key part of A Handful of Harmonies according to Andrew: “The sessions are enjoyable social events. There is discipline and structure but also fun, laughter and a strong sense of teamwork as we rehearse songs from a variety of genres, performing new musical arrangements to suit a variety of tastes.” The groups often also organise social events during the term and at the end of term. Andrew also runs two choirs for children; Harminies for children aged 7 - 11 years at Langtoft and the Bourne Youth Choir for 11 - 16 years.
There is also an active Friends of A Handful of Harmonies group which coordinates fundraising and social events. Past events have included race nights, quizzes, bake-offs and many more.

inter can be a difficult time for hair and skin with biting winds, rain and freezing cold, together with extended hours in centrally heated homes and offices. Concept asked some of Stamford’s expert beauticians and nutritionists for their top tips to help halt those detrimental seasonal effects and keep us looking and feeling beautiful.
Vitamins, Minerals and Protein Imogen (Shaw Nutrition)
From a nutrition point of view, there’s one thing I would recommend above all else for healthy hair and skin (and nails too!), a product called Synerprotein. Skin and hair are made mainly of protein, so putting high quality protein in to your body daily is essential. What’s more, Synerprotein is high in a range of vitamins and minerals such as iron, vitamin A, vitamin C and a wide spectrum of B vitamins - all of which help to keep skin and hair strong, healthy and glowing. Blend it up with water and fruit to make a delicious but nutritious breakfast smoothie. To order yours at a 15% discount, go to www.shawnutrition.co.uk/concept.
Rehydrate and Moisturise Fiona (Renaissance)
The best way to keep skin in optimum condition over winter is to keep up your water intake. Water feeds the cells and keeps the skin hydrated and protected from harsh weather conditions. Tea and herbal infusions add to your water intake but coffee does not so if you are a coffee addict, drink a glass of water each time you are waiting for the kettle to boil to counter the effects. A good day and night moisturiser is essential, especially if your skin is very dry or sensitive and don’t forget your SPF. The sun’s rays may not be as strong but they can still cause photo-ageing and pigmentation. For more information contact Renaissance on 01780 763768 20 / CONCEPT MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 15

Sun Protection Factor Kirsten (Body Matters)
Exposure to daylight and ultraviolet (UV ) rays on a daily basis means we really need to ensure we’re protecting our skin all year round. Wearing a sunscreen whenever exposed to daylight is just a small way that we can boost our body’s defence against UV radiation. Beauty manufacturers are formulating sun protection products with powerful antioxidants, including vitamins and plant botanicals, whose properties remain inactive until they are exposed to UV. You can apply your sunscreen, knowing the antioxidants will release whenever it’s time to go outdoors therefore protecting your skin further. Always apply this from your décolletage up to your forehead so the areas exposed are protected and won’t give away your age at a later date! Dermalogica have a great SPF range for all skin types with this microencapsulation technology and it does not feel like you have a sun cream on, please come in and try some samples. We are offering 15% off any SPFs in February, make sure you stock up and remember these are great for ski trips! Lastly do not forget your lips, to keep them soft and kissable for Valentine’s....try the Climate Control Lip treatment that helps damaged skin recover and provides a barrier against the wind, rain and sun. This retails at £8.10 but is also on offer with 15% off. You can contact Body Matters on 01780 270002 for more details

Exfoliate and Nourish Karen (Maples)
The winter weather is not fun for your hair or your skin. The dry air steals the moisture away and usually leaves us with dry, dehydrated skin and causes split ends and frizzy uncontrollable hair. So my number one top tip would be to drink plenty of water to hydrate from the inside out, which will show in your hair and skin. But you also need a handful of carefully chosen skin and hair care buys. A gentle exfoliation in winter is a good thing for the face and body, it speeds up cell turnover, which is more sluggish when it’s cold. Enzymebased peels are gentlest, like the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel (£29.50) which contains moisturising milk proteins, vitamin E and marine algae, so is ideal for sensitive and older skin. Use once or twice a week. To really ensure your skin gets the extra care it needs, change your skin care routine and add in an essential oil as they have a very fine molecular structure so they are much more rapidly absorbed by the skin, giving better and quicker results. The Clarins 100% plant extract oils have stood the test of time and work as problem solvers for many different skin challenges such as the winter weather. Face oil (£32.00) and Body oil (£38.00). To keep your hair looking and feeling beautiful use an oil that can be used pre and post styling such as the Kerastace Elixir Ultime oil (£34.50) which will restore strength to the hair and protect it from external aggressors leaving it conditioned, nourished and ultimately glossy, also more regular visits to the hairdressers for even a tiny trim is a great way to keep your hair from dry splitting ends. Contact Maples on 01780 752725.
Regeneration and Firming Neeta (Flawless Faces)
As we stay inside more over the winter months, central heating can cause the skin to lose moisture and become dehydrated. For this reason we are offering our clients a taster Decleor anti-ageing facial for £35 during the month of February. Using a range of massages we can promote skin regeneration and firming, leaving the face rejuvenated and ready for spring. We also highly recommend the multi-award winning Aromessence Neroli Super Serum, designed to prepare the skin for deep moisturising together with the Hydra Floral range, a wonderfully light product, suitable for all skin types, which hydrates for 24 hours and leaves the skin looking smoother and more radiant. Finding THE RIGHT THERAPIST
It’s good to talk... by Fiona Hood
Renaissance Health & Beauty
T
he beauty industry has seen a huge rise in the number of clients having treatments on the High Street and in spas over the last few years. There is an incredible amount of choice on where to go for treatments, but do you ever question the qualifications of the person offering your treatment?
It is all very well to get a cheap deal with a discount group on the internet but are you really getting a good quality treatment with a fully qualified practitioner? I am on the advisory board for the Register of Beauty Professionals and this body has been set up because of the lowering of standards within the beauty industry. Individuals can sign themselves up for quick courses and then set themselves up in business with little or no experience. Proper beauty therapy qualifications take years to complete and then it is important to carry on with continued professional development in this ever changing industry. We aim to set up a professional register so clients can make informed decisions about where to go for their treatments. It is important when you go for your treatment to see certificates of qualifications and insurance prominently displayed for you to view. No qualifications means no insurance and there is a lot of damage that can be done with bad practice. A salon who offers electrolysis, semi-permanent makeup or ear piercing not only need their premises to be registered with SKDC but also the individuals carrying out those treatments need to be registered and checked by the council at regular intervals. Salons offering laser and IPL treatments no longer need to be registered with the Care Quality Commission so extra vigilance is needed when seeking out these treatments. Some salons may have been registered in the past when it was mandatory, so these salons would be carrying out good practice. Seek them out. So when you are looking for a treat or a service, don’t think it is bad manners to ask questions. Quiz your therapist to find out how well informed they are. A good therapist will be only too happy to pass on
their knowledge and expertise. Special offers are a great way to try new products and services but make sure you are getting something of a good standard and not an inferior product or treatment. Once you have found a good therapist offering excellent treatment you will want to stay with them.

is a holder of the Advanced Certificate from the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust and is an avid wine collector and enthusiast. You can follow his wine thoughts on Facebook by searching Bells Farm Vintners.
W
IN THE NAME OF LOVE
ith Valentine’s Day fast approaching, Leigh Johnson is moved to search out wines that express romance and love, quite literally
Some wines are labeled quite bizarrely these days, with names such as ‘Two Miles by Tractor’ or ‘Hesitant Bystander’ but these are, quite frankly, unlikely to woo your beau or belle. What you need is a label that depicts love visually or announces it in the written form. I have identified two quite outstanding wines that cannot fail to hit the spot. They don’t come cheap, in fact quite the reverse, but they do declare your devotion loud and clear with a ‘because you’re worth it’ statement. To cap it all, both wines come from France, a country renowned for its romance. What could be better? Firstly, I can recommend a beautiful wine from the Saint Estephe region of Bordeaux. Nestled near the mouth of the Gironde estuary, where the river meets the sea, Saint Estephe produces some wonderful, full-bodied red wines. Calon Segur is a top quality classed growth red wine blended from four grape varieties, namely, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, The wines have a nose of blackcurrants, cedar wood, cigar box, pencil shavings, tarmacadam and sometimes a whiff of mint. On the palate, they are usually
26-51_C11.indd 29
WINES
expressive of blackcurrants, damsons, leather, bell pepper and in younger wines, a touch of oak. These wines tend to be quite tannic in youth and need a minimum of five years age to soften but find a bottle of this age or older and you will be very well rewarded. The love association with this wine is in the label and the story behind it. The Chateau was purchased by the Marquis de Calon in the early 1800s and so in love he fell with the estate and the region that he sold two of Bordeaux’s greatest estates, which he also owned at the time, Lafite and Latour, proclaiming his heart lies in Calon. It is for this reason that the label depicts the Calon Segur Chateau sitting upon a heart. This wine retails for between £40 and £80 per bottle depending on the vintage. Secondly, I can recommend the Domaine Roumier, Les Amoureuse, from the Chambolle Musigny region of Burgundy. Les Amoureuse is a Premier Cru climat but arguably one that should be Grand Cru. Les Amoureuse translates into ‘the lovers’ in French and no other vineyard quite conveys this in a wine more than this fabled
vineyard. The wine is exclusively Pinot Noir and offers a feminine, beguiling vinous experience like nothing else. Pinot Noir is a thin skinned, delicate grape. The wine has a soft crimson hue with a tawny bricking towards the rim as the wines age. They are usually very pronounced on the nose with aromas of wild strawberries, cherries, Asian spice and often truffles. The palate tends to be rich, with bright red and black fruits, forest undergrowth, and as the wines mature, a barnyard or cabbage note. This may not sound attractive but believe me, a great Burgundy bottle is the best wine experience you will ever have! Les Amoureuese is an expensive wine; there is no getting away from that. A bottle will cost between £60 and £300 depending on the producer concerned and vintage. Even a wine at the cheaper end of this spectrum should be spectacular. My recommended example is available at around £80 per bottle. I think you would certainly thrill your partner with your effort of a home-cooked candlelit dinner and an outstanding bottle of wine, at least as much, if not more so, than going out to a restaurant. Don’t forget the flowers too!

GRAY MOUNTAIN by John Grisham
Samantha Kofer is a highly paid associate at a large New York law firm. In the recession which follows the collapse of Lehman Brothers, she suddenly finds herself out of a job. She has to take an unpaid internship at a legal aid law firm, with the possibility of returning to her old job in the future.
by Stamford Library
She moves to Brady, Virginia, to the Appalachian Mountains, the centre of the coal mining industry. She swaps her high profile clients for people who have nothing and need her help. She goes to court for the first time, defending victims of domestic violence, families fighting over a will and sufferers of black lung, caused by coal dust, in their fight for compensation from the coal companies.

THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR
by Julia Hubery illustrated by Caroline Pedler This is a beautifully illustrated, brightly coloured book by the author of A Friend Like You and Who Loves Baby. It is the story of Alfie Bear and his new jumper, knitted for him by his mum, with love. Helping out his friends Moley, Rabbit and Mouse, Alfie gets into all sorts of scrapes. He gets stuck in the blackberries, falls over in the mud and ends up in a tree. His beautiful jumper gets wet, stretched and covered in juice and mud. Will his mum be cross? This is a soft-to-touch book. Children will love to feel Alfie’s jumper, while they follow his adventures.
She witnesses the devastation caused by strip mining, where whole mountains are destroyed from the top down, causing huge environmental damage in the process. She sees how the coal mining companies are so powerful that they avoid prosecution for the terrible pollution they cause and how with the help of very expensive legal teams, they avoid paying any compensation. She meets Donovan Gray, a lawyer who alone is prepared to take on the might of the coal industry. She reluctantly gets drawn into his battle and along with his brother Jeff is followed and threatened by the companies about to be exposed. Another of John Grisham’s well written legal thrillers, Gray Mountain tackles head on the practices of the coal industry and the impact on the landscape and the lives of local people.

Q: Where can I find blinds for my conservatory as it gets too hot in the summer?
A: Why not try blinds from the Perfect Fit range. Perfect Fit is a revolutionary system that enables window roller blinds to be fitted perfectly on to most double glazed windows and doors, without needing to drill holes into the uPVC frames. This unique and innovative frame fits neatly on to the window; it moves together with the blind as you raise or lower it, giving you the perfect combination of shade and ventilation. The Perfect Fit frame also offers outstanding thermal efficiency. The frame fits flush against your window to help reduce heat build up in summer and retain heat in winter, in turn helping to keep air conditioning and heating bills down. To maximise further the insulating qualities, you can also choose an energy-efficient fabric. Q: What colour counter tops do I pair with off-white kitchen cabinets?
A: There are many things in life that never go out of style and white kitchens are one of them. Having a very neutral finish with the doors and worktops is a very popular choice right now. We firmly believe in making the design complement the home and we think people have realised that neutral colours will stand the test of time. There are no real limits on colour choice with an off-white kitchen for example a bolder, accent colour can then be brought into the room with accessories which can then be easily changed to give the kitchen an instant re-vamp. Most worktops including laminates, granites and Corian worktops can be fitted with matching upstands nowadays. A glass splash back is a very popular choice for behind hob areas, this can also be a way of introducing a bolder colour and again is something that can be changed to give the kitchen a new feel. The allure of off-white cabinets is timeless, so take your time, research what you like, make sure it fits with the style of the rest of your home and have fun. Really, you can’t go wrong with a off-white kitchen. For more information contact Intone Design, Unit 3, Britannia Ind. Est. Cherryholt Road, Bourne, T: 01778 393160 or visit www.intonedesign.co.uk.
Q: Who sells adjustable pendant lights?
A: The correct lighting in a room is essential to any home. Whether an intimate atmosphere, illuminated kitchen table, or well-lit workspace is required, a wellpositioned pendant light could be the solution. A pendant light is essentially a light that hangs from the ceiling, suspended by either a cord, rope, chain, or pole. The name pendant originates from the light’s resemblance to ladies’ pendant necklaces and, despite having been in existence in one form or another for many centuries, they can be stylish and contemporary as well as traditional. A wide variety of pendant lights are available from CJ Carpet & Lighting, 53 Scotgate, Stamford, T: 01780 754825, www.cjcarpetsandlighting.com.
Q: I don’t have a big budget for home decorating. What are some wallet-friendly solutions to make my home look stylish and chic on a budget? A: Why not start with paint. The basis for every beautiful room is always the overall ambiance that’s created with the colour that surrounds the space. Don’t be afraid to accent a feature wall with some colour and then highlight it with an oversize piece of art. If your furniture is fairly neutral, choose a couple of throw cushions to match the accented wall. To complete the space, accessorise the coffee table with a small stack of coffee table books topped with a beautiful large glass vase with fresh flowers. Visit Gallery Stamford, 3 Maiden Lane, Stamford, T: 01780 753737, www.gallerystamford.co.uk.
Q: Do you have any space-saving tricks for small kitchens?
A: A well-designed kitchen should have minimal clutter and maximum efficiency. Whether you’re redecorating or totally remodelling your kitchen Devonports offers some expert advice here for those with the need of help with small spaces. For example: A mirrored tile splash back in the kitchen can provide the illusion of more space. Consider fitting a spice rack to the inside of a cupboard door which will help keep your worktops clutter-free. Think upwards, if space is tight have you ever thought about picking out cupboards that are not only designed horizontally but also vertically? Contain kitchen clutter with trays and baskets, they are not only very useful but also homely, they are not just for carrying things but also to organize collections. Light wood cabinets and light walls can also make it feel more spacious. We say make the most out of your kitchen and utilize every space possible. For more information contact Devonports, T: 01778 346415, 43-45 Bridge Street, Deeping St James.

Volunteering in Stamford
Stamford STREET PASTORS
I
f you’ve been out in Stamford on a Saturday night, chances are you will have come across the Stamford Street Pastors. The Street Pastors are out every Saturday night, and work in partnership with the local Police, SKDC, Town Council and the numerous late night staff in Stamford to help reduce the amount of late night nuisance, public disorder and general crime in the town. The Street Pastor initiative was launched in London in 2003 by Reverend Les Isaac, director of the Ascension Trust, bringing Christians together to engage with people on the streets to care for them, listen to them and help them. There are now some 12,000 trained volunteers in around 260 teams around the UK. Each project is set up by Ascension Trust and run by a local coordinator with support from Ascension Trust, local churches and community groups, in partnership with Police, Council and other statutory agencies. The Stamford Street Pastors began in 2011 with 35 local Christians coming together as a team. Over the past two years Stamford has seen a reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour during the hours the Street Pastors operate. Working in partnership with the local Police, Local Authority, Town Council and others has contributed towards these reductions. Street Pastors are trained volunteers from local churches. They patrol in teams of men and women, usually from 9.30pm to 3.30am on a Saturday night. Tom Nottidge is a senior Street Pastor and one of the founding trustees of the Stamford Street Pastors and says: “We’re not out there preaching heaven and hell, but listening, caring and helping – to anyone who needs it. Most people who go out do so to have a great time. But sometimes a night doesn’t go as planned – you lose your mates or you end up having a few too many drinks. We tend to give help to those who don’t require emergency services, but neverthe-less need help in other ways, whether that is help to find a taxi home or a bottle of water to re-hydrate.” A typical Saturday night sees a team of four Street Pastors on patrol, with two Prayer Pastors back at base keeping in touch via radio, getting hot drinks ready and praying. The team usually start with a walk across the Rec Ground, across the Meadows and to the train station, where they engage with young people who are hanging out. “We do come across young people drinking, but sometimes people just want to have a chat. We find especially over summer 16, 17 and 18 year olds like to have quite philosophical conversations about their futures,” says Tom.
26-51_C11.indd 39
Then it’s back across town and back to base by about 11pm for a break, then the team spends the rest of the evening in the middle of town walking around, chatting to people, sweeping up broken glass, handing out water, sweets and flip flops. “The flip flops have been a great success,” says Tom. “We hand them out to any women we see walking in stocking feet, saving a potential trip to hospital with a cut foot.” The latter part of the evening is usually the messiest, with the Street Pastors ensuring that even the most inebriated people get home safely. “We are absolutely delighted with the support we get from the people of Stamford,” says Tom. “We hardly ever get any trouble when we are out and about. Most people just like to have a chat, a light for a cigarette or a bottle of water.”
Become a Street Pastor
Anyone over the age of 18 can become a Street Pastor. You do need to be a Christian and part of a local church, but it doesn’t matter which church. You will need a letter of reference from your church leader. Extensive training is given across a wide variety of subjects, including: police protocol, youth culture, sociology, drugs, alcohol, safety, First Aid and interacting with large groups. The Stamford Street Pastors come from a wide range of backgrounds, with the youngest in their 20s and the oldest in their 80s. They operate a rota system so that everyone is on duty just once a month. Thanks to the Ascension Trust for the photos of Street Pastors at work around the UK.

here’s something for everyone in Mexico: relax among the palm trees at one of Cancun’s famous beach resorts, make a splash with the kids at a water park, journey through the jungle to discover ancient Mayan ruins, or party all night long at the world-famous nightclubs. Mexico offers so much more than just its world famous Caribbean coast; it is strikingly vibrant and full of cultural gems from preHispanic ruins to grand colonial architecture. Begin in the capital, Mexico City, where the ancient, colonial and modern sit side by side; then head east through a heartland with a rich heritage to the Yucatán Peninsula. This is the Mexico you’ve dreamed of, home to iconic sights such as Chichen Itza, Tulum, and of course those picture-perfect beaches. The Mayan Riviera Stretching south from Cancun to the dramatic cliff top ruins of Tulum, the Mayan Riviera is the most popular of Mexico’s Caribbean destinations. Your time here can consist of nothing but relaxing on a white-sand beach,
soaking up the atmosphere in Playa del Carmen and making the most of your resort’s activities and facilities. Or enjoy some of the region’s main attractions which include the Xcaret and Xel-Ha ecoarchaeological parks and the beautiful ruins of Tulum. Cancun is the most famous Latin beach resort for its year-long sunny weather, happening beaches, chic shopping venues and lively dancing scene at some of the continent’s hottest nightclubs. The appeal of Cancun extends beyond the beaches and the parties to include a little ancient Mayan history. Combine the enigmatic allure of ancient Mayan civilisation with world-class all inclusive beach resorts offering the highest standards of service and facilities for couples, families or groups.
Mexico City Mexico City is vast, yet its historic centre is easily explored on foot. The huge Plaza de la Constitucion - or ‘Zócalo’ – is the city’s heart, a natural place to start; here you’ll find the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral, the famous national flag and the National Palace which is home to the Diego Rivera murals. Other highlights include the massed-mariachis of Plaza Garibaldi, the colourful canal boats of Xochimilco and the UNESCO archaeological site of Teotihuacán, with its huge pyramids of the Moon and Sun. Let us create your perfect holiday Mexico is a fabulously diverse destination offering historic sites, exciting nightlife, exquisite beaches and fascinating architecture - making it ideal for a holiday. Our personal travel experts are waiting to help you mix and match flights, resorts, hotels and experiences as your dream break takes shape.

Little Miss Adventures Out and about with kids around Peterborough, Stamford & Bourne
BIKE RIDE round Rutland Water A
sunny winter’s day provides a great opportunity for a bike ride and picnic at Rutland Water. Michelle Board has fun and gets some good exercise towing Little Miss around! I’ve wanted to take Little Miss on a bike ride around Rutland Water for a while now. Last time we went to Rutland Water in autumn, it was too windy, so we made do with a brisk walk to the playground and some jumping about in autumn leaves. So a couple of weekends ago, with the sun shining and nothing else to do, we packed a picnic lunch and headed out to Rutland Water. We don’t have our own bikes, so we hired bikes. There are two places you can hire bikes from – Rutland Cycling, Whitwell (on the north shore) and Giant Rutland, Normanton (on the south shore). Bike hire costs the same from both, so it doesn’t matter which one you go to. There are quite a few options when biking with kids, depending on their ability. For the wee ones, there are rear-fitted bike seats (suitable from 18 months +) and bike buggies (can take two kids from 18 months +). Once they’re confident on a bike, you can hire them their own bike, or a trailer bike (which attaches to the back of your bike). You hire either in a two-hour block, or all-day. I was planning on hiring a bike seat for Little Miss, but as soon as she saw the buggy, that was it. She climbed in, sat her teddy bear beside her, got out her lunch box and refused to budge! So the bike buggy was attached to my bike (of course she didn’t want to go behind Daddy’s bike…) and off we went. We opted for a two-hour hire, so set off clockwise from Whitwell, with Normanton as our destination (an easy 45 minute ride according to the lad who sorted out our bikes). I have to admit it was quite hard going with the buggy on the back and I had to remember I was quite a bit wider than normal when passing other cyclists or
walkers. I couldn’t cycle up any of the ‘hills’ (which were really just small inclines), and had to dismount and push. But, it was a lovely ride on a sealed pathway the whole way to Normanton. I really enjoyed it and Little Miss loved being in the buggy. We kept the cover off so she could see out. There were so many families out and about walking and on bikes. On the way back to Whitwell there was a head wind, and I nearly came to a standstill, so we swapped bikes, and I got to ride Daddy’s speedy bike – what a difference! We got back to Whitwell with about 20 minutes to spare, so decided to ride a little in the other direction (towards Barnsdale). I was glad we hadn’t gone that way first, as there were two huge hills (proper hills, not the small inclines that I had encountered on the way to Normanton), and Little Miss’s Dad very gallantly biked up them both. After about 5 minutes the sealed pathway finished and gave way to a firm, but unsealed path. This was a bit muddy in places – poor Little Miss got mud flicked all over her (we still had the cover up) and started to cry, so we turned around and headed back and called it a day.
What else is there at Rutland Water? There’s quite a lot to do at Rutland Water, aside from biking. At the Whitwell car park there is also the Rock Blok which has an abseiling tower, trampoline and high ropes course. From Whitwell you can also take a cruise on the Rutland Belle, which sails from April to September. And if you’re feeling slightly more adventurous you can hire a canoe, windsurfer or rowing boat from Rutland Watersports (also based at Whitwell).
ABOUT LITTLE MISS ADVENTURES Michelle Board is a writer, blogger and mum to ‘Little Miss’ – her 3-year-old daughter. Read more about their days out around Peterborough, Stamford and Bourne on www.littlemissadventures.net LittleMissAdventuresUK
@littlemissnmum
At the Sykes Lane car park you’ll find the adventure playground – well worth a visit. On our previous visit we spent about an hour here on the swings and balance beams. But our favourite ‘find’ is the outdoor gym at Whitwell. The gym includes a full range of outdoor equipment some of which is disabled-friendly, including arm and pedal bikes, cross country skier, rowing machine, arm press and leg press. It was great. There were adults and kids of all ages playing on the equipment; mums and dads racing each other on the bikes, two kids on the leg press trying to get it to move. I’m not sure it’s what the designers had in mind, but it was really nice to see adults enjoying themselves as much as the kids.
Car parking There are four main car parks: Normanton (south shore), Sykes Lane, Whitwell and Barnsdale (all on the north shore). It costs £1.50 for an hour, £3 for three hours and £5 all day. For bike hire, park either at Normanton or Whitwell. For those people coming from Stamford direction on the A606, the Whitwell car park is the second one (so ignore the first sign for car parking on the north shore – that is Sykes Lane). Eating and drinking
There are lots of options for food and drink around Rutland Water. There is a small tea rooms at each of the car parks, selling crisps, chocolate, ice creams and hot and cold drinks. For something more substantial, try the Harbour Bar Café at Whitwell which is a licensed café and bar serving light bites, hot food and evening meals. On the way round the reservoir there are also a number of pubs and restaurants you can stop at. And of course, you can bring your own picnic – there are plenty of tables and benches at the car parks, and along the reservoir.
Facilities There are toilet blocks at each of the car parks. They don’t have baby changing facilities. FEBRUARY 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 47

Craft IDEA
F
or a day at home try making your own play dough - no cooking needed! This play dough is soft, smooth and doesn’t dry out, even if left out all day. You will need:
2 cups plain flour
2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar Up to 1.5 cups boiling water Food colouring (optional)
Method: Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl.
If using, add food colouring to the boiling water then add the boiling water to the dry ingredients, adding a bit at a time until it feels right (you will know!) Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough.
Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency. If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right.

Why your parent’s Will IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR OWN I am going to encourage you to have a difficult conversation – a conversation that, I have been told, will make you feel uncomfortable, prying, greedy grasping – but a conversation that is essential. So here goes – Talk to your parents about their death, what they want to happen when they die, what their Wills say, what their funeral wishes are and how they want to be remembered. Talk to your parents about the period running up to their death, what happens if they get ill, who they want to make the important decisions about care and life sustaining treatment, and what they need to do to ensure that these things happen. Hopefully you know by now that you need to make a Will, maybe you have even done it, but the fact remains that 50% of people die without a Will often assuming that everything will automatically pass to their spouse or children and your parents could be among them. When you have the conversation, ask yourself, do you need their money or would it be better to pass to your children or grandchildren. There might be tax implications if you receive the money that could be avoided by skipping a generation or two. Ask them what they have done to protect their assets against Tax and Care Costs, to ensure that probate will be quick and efficient after they have gone. Above all ask them to have a family meeting, preferably with a qualified advisor who will guide them through their options and ensure that all of the family understands and ‘buys in’ to the planning that needs to be done. Your parent’s Will and end of life planning is more important than yours, ask them to review it today – even offer to pay – it will save you time, stress and grief in the long run. Call us 01778 382723 to arrange a family consultation.

I am often asked by clients why they need a Lasting Power of Attorney in Place when they are perfectly healthy, this cautionary tale illustrates the need perfectly.
A client came to see me last year his wife had had a catastrophic stroke - no warning it just happened. Their accounts were jointly held but the bank had restricted access to them as one of the account holders lacked capacity - they can do that. My client asked me to put in place a Lasting Power of Attorney for his wife, and I had to explain that it was too late as she already lacked capacity. I was able to offer him help with a deputyship application to the court of protection for a fixed fee plus court costs which he was happy to accept. So we made the application, he paid my fee, the court costs, for an independent mental health capacity assessment, and an insurance bond to the court – grand total £2700. Seven months later the court appointed him as a deputy. Had his wife had put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, he would have had access to his money straight away, the ability to manage his wife’s affairs straight away and he wouldn’t need to refer anything that moves from the smallest decisions to the court. nyone who ever claims to butterfly to unsuspecting passers-by, have owned a cat is under a Lasting Powers of Attorney cost £300 plus a small court depending on their personal boldness. almost always make its humans feel that they are merely tolerated as a kind of unpaid staff.
According to statistics commissioned by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association, at the end of 2014 there were approximately eight million cats in the UK with about 17% of the population owning at least one feline. Their independent nature make them the ideal pet for people who have busy lives yet still want the companionship of an animal to come home to. Despite the image as an aloof loner, cats do love human attention, in fact they positively demand it and a determined cat is impossible to ignore. Part of any animal care is ensuring the pet is fed, well cared for and entertained and it is this play that makes the cat the most endearing of companions. Stimulating the prey instinct is an irresistible temptation to any tabby. A cat does not need to be hungry to hunt, they do it because it is fun. Outside cats will regularly ambush and pounce upon
52-68_C11.indd 55
in fact anything fluid and wavy can be used as something for the cat to bat and chase. The cat should be allowed to catch and kill the prey from time to time, although not necessarily with delicate items such as a pair of tights, as anyone who has tried to hang up washing while being ‘helped’ by a cat will tell you. Hide and seek is another game in which puss excels. They like to get up high if they can, or failing that, anywhere they can conceal themselves. Place a cardboard box in a feline household and you will invariably find it filled with fur before too long, or hang a coat on a back of a chair and a pair of eyes will shortly be peeping from under the hem. It is not without reason that the internet is awash with pictures of cats squeezing themselves into places that you would never expect a cat to want to be. The saying goes, if I fit, I sit. Cats are very clean animals and will normally arrive at their new abode toilet trained by their mothers. For indoor cats a litter tray is going to be essential. In
multiple puss households each animal should have a litter tray each, plus an extra. The toilet area needs to be in a quiet space where the cat is unlikely to be disturbed. It is worth taking into consideration when siting the tray that cat litter and its contents can be irresistible to other residents such as dogs and very small children, so care should be taken to keep it out of the reach of uninvited paws and tiny fingers. Scratching is something essential to cats to keep claws needle sharp and in peak condition. This can be undesirable if the focus of their manicure happens to be furniture based. In providing a scratching post for the cat to whole heartedly ignore, the human may be forgiven for feeling discouraged, however, with a little patience, placing the post directly where the cat likes to scratch, and the addition of a little catnip as a sweetener, even the most stubborn feline can be eventually persuaded to change its ways. Cats continue to be one of the most intriguing and amusing of pets. Their purrs and chirrups of pleasure betray the fact that they are as equally fond of us, but, as Discworld author Terry Pratchett quipped ‘In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.’

Marvellous MUSTARDS, jams and chutneys T his month Rosemary Jameson is cleaning out the freezer and using last year’s leftovers to make jam and chutney, as well as a few batches of mustard and checking everything is in order for the coming soft fruit season.
Rosemary Jameson runs her own business ‘Rosie Makes’, supplying shops, cafes and hotels with delicious artisan preserves. She also runs classes in preserving techniques from her base in Rutland. She’s active with the Women’s Institute and runs The Guild of Jam and Preserve Makers, a central focus for all preservers and authorities such as Trading Standards and Environmental Health.
52-68_C11.indd 56
With Christmas a distant memory and marmalade making completed (well, nearly) keen preservers will be reluctant to put their pans and spoons away. This is a very good opportunity to give the freezer a good turn-out. You will be surprised at what you might find and what you could make. Any combination of soft fruits like raspberries, red and blackcurrants, especially if they are in small amounts, make a delicious mixed berry jam or you could use them to make a cordial. I have just found a bag of gooseberries hiding under a larger bag of blackcurrants so have used them to make a gooseberry and lime jam. I had a couple of rather tired limes in the fruit basket but although the skins had paled into lemon yellow they were beautifully juicy. I bought two new limes and zested the skins and squeezed the juice.
You need to weigh the gooseberries, add all of the juice and then poach over a gentle heat until the fruit is soft. Weigh out the sugar equal amount to the fruit – and add to the pan off the heat. Stir to dissolve and then return the pan to the heat and bring up to a boil. Maintain a fast boil for 5-6 minutes before testing a little on a cold saucer for a set. Stir in the zest at the end to prevent it darkening. There are full details and photographs on rosiemakesjam.com on testing for a set. You could make some chutney with a mixture of fruit if you have things like plums or apples to use up. Once the freezer contents have been ‘re-purposed’ as they call it now, take the opportunity to de-frost it all ready for the fresh harvests to come. This time of year is also perfect for making the things that you may not have time for in

Wholegrain MUSTARD with Beer Makes 5-6 medium jars
200g/8oz yellow mustard seeds 200g/8oz black mustard seeds 150ml/6fl oz cider vinegar 1 bottle (500ml) any kind of beer 1 tablespoon sea salt 6 tablespoons runny honey 1 tablespoon freshly grated nutmeg
Start the night before - put the seeds into a large bowl and pour over the beer and cover. Next day add all the other ingredients and process, in small batches, in a liquidiser. Stir the batches together so they are uniform and then pot up into warmed jars. Keeps at least 12 months, no need to refrigerate.
Dijon MUSTARD Will make around 6 jars
400ml/14fl oz dry white wine 1 large onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 250g/4oz mustard powder 3 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 teaspoons salt
Combine the wine, onion and garlic in a pan and heat to boiling point. Turn down and simmer for 5 minutes. Cool, then liquidise until smooth. Return to the pan and add the dry mustard powder, stirring until smooth. Blend in the honey, salt and oil and heat slowly until thickened, stirring constantly. Pour into sterilised jars and seal immediately. Mature the mustard for at least two weeks before using. summer and autumn - wholegrain mustards and Dijon mustard for instance. Both are really easy to make, you can follow the recipes above. Once you realise how easy it is to make your own mustards you can experiment with a variety of recipes and create the solution to some gift problems! They keep well for at least a year so you can make them now all ready for Easter or next Christmas.

STAY HEALTHY this winter W
inter is here and that inevitably means coughs and colds and generally feeling a bit ‘blah’. But here are seven ways to keep fit and healthy and fight off the feeling to hibernate.
Eat more fruit and veg It can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food when it is cold and miserable outside. But in winter it is even more important to ensure you still have a healthy diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables. If you find yourself craving a sugary treat, try a satsuma or dried fruits such as dates or raisins instead. Eating
foods that are high in vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong, so include fruit and veg such as lemons, kiwi, peppers and broccoli in your weekly shop. Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swede and turnips can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal for the whole family.

23/01/2015 12:41:12
Get some exercise This time of year exercise is often the last thing you feel like doing, but you’ll feel more energetic if you get involved in some kind of physical activity every day. A recent study shows that a moderate level of regular exercise has a long-term cumulative effect on immune
response. Exercise in the late afternoon may help to reduce early evening fatigue, and also improve your sleep. You don’t need to be outdoors either. There are plenty of exercise and fitness classes on in and around Stamford during the day and evenings.
Keep stress to a minimum Studies have linked high stress levels to making a person more susceptible to catching colds and flu. Minimise your stress by working reasonable hours at your job. Aim for at least one night per week to spend with friends and family. Socialising helps strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to rug up on the couch all winter.
Up your intake of vitamin D
Wash your hands
Less sunshine over the winter months can mean you don’t get enough vitamin D, and that can make you feel tired. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight, but here in the UK we can’t make enough vitamin D from winter daylight between November and March so it’s especially important to get vitamin D from your diet. Good food sources of vitamin D are oily fish (salmon, mackerel and sardines), eggs and meat. Vitamin D is also added to all margarine, and to some breakfast cereals, soya products, dairy products and low-fat spreads.
Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness as it limits the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. This is important during winter when we tend to cough and sneeze more frequently. Wet your hands and lather up with soap for 20 seconds and rinse well under running water. 23/01/2015 12:41:59
3 COMMON WINTER ILLS: SORE THROAT Sore throats are common in winter and are almost always caused by viral infections. A quick and easy remedy for a sore throat is to gargle with warm salty water. It won’t heal the infection, but it has anti-inflammatory properties and can have a soothing effect. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a glass of part-cooled boiled water. ASTHMA Cold air is a major trigger of asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. People with asthma should be especially careful in winter. When you do go out, wear a scarf over your nose and mouth. Be extra vigilant about taking your regular medications, and keep rescue inhalers close by and in a warm place. DRY SKIN Dry skin is a common condition and is often worse during the winter, when environmental humidity is low. Moisturising is essential during winter. Contrary to popular belief, moisturising lotions and creams aren’t absorbed by the skin. Instead, they act as a sealant to stop the skin’s natural moisture evaporating away. The best time to apply moisturiser is after a bath or shower while your skin is still moist, and again at bedtime. Have warm, rather than hot, showers. Water that is too hot makes skin feel more dry and itchy.
5 WINTER SUPERFOODS: Have a hearty breakfast Winter is the perfect season for porridge. Porridge is a great way to boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre. These give you energy and help you feel fuller for longer, stopping the temptation to snack midmorning. Oats also contain lots of vital vitamins and minerals. Make your porridge with semi-skimmed or skimmed milk or water, and don’t add sugar or salt. Add a few dried apricots, some raisins, a sliced banana or other fruit for extra flavour.
GARLIC
It’s an oldie, but a goodie. Raw garlic will help ward off coughs and colds. Try a garlic supplement if you don’t like it raw.
KIWI
One kiwi has more vitamin C than an orange. And for added fibre; leave the skin on.
SQUASH
Get a good night’s sleep When winter hits it’s tempting to go into hibernation mode, but that sleepy feeling you get in winter doesn’t mean you should snooze for longer. In fact if you do, chances are you’ll feel even more sluggish during the day. You don’t actually need any more sleep in winter than in summer, the short days can just make it feel like you do. Aim for about eight hours a night and try to stick to a reliable sleep schedule. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. And make sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep – clear the clutter, have comfortable and warm bed linen and turn off the TV. For more winter health tips see www.nhs.uk/livewell/winterhealth
52-68_C11.indd 60
Squash has it all: plenty of dietary fibre, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals.
SALMON
Salmon is a great source of vitamin D, something we are all short of over winter.
DARK CHOCOLATE
Cacao-based dark chocolate is one of the best natural sources of antioxidants, iron, magnesium and zinc. Hooray!
