search for perfection. This wine is the culmination of 30 years of listening to the Puente Alto terroir, the perfect expression of what we call the beauty of balance,” says Don Melchor technical director Enrique Tirado. This important milestone is celebrated with the release of the 30th vintage—the 2016—a excellent vintage for Don Mechor that stands out for the balance of flavors and aromas reached in this wine. The 2016 vintage is 93 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 3 % Cabernet Franc, 3 % Petit Verdot, and 1 % Merlot. It spent 14 months in French oak barrels, 55 % of which were new and 45 % were second use.
COLLECTORS EXPERIENCE
DON MELCHOR OPENS ITS “CASONA” Motivated by the celebration of 30 vintages of Don Melchor, “Collectors Experience” was inaugurated as an exclusive opportunity that invites visitors to learn about the production of one of the most emblematic Cabernet Sauvignons in the world.
Along with the release of the 2016 vintage, Don Melchor presents the “Collectors’ Experience”, a journey through the history that invites participants to learn how the icon Cabernet Sauvignon from Alto Maipo is made. The Experience begins with a stroll through the 22-hectare park that surrounds La Casona de Pirque, the manor house built in 1875 as the summer home of the winery’s founder, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro. The tour continues to the century-old wine cellar where the French oak barrels of Don Melchor wines are aged. The visitors are then invited to enter La Casona, which now opens its doors to the public for the first time to share the history of one of its great halls, which has faithfully maintained its original mid-19th-century style. Here they participate in
a guided tasting of the different vineyard parcels that give rise to Don Melchor, discovering the Puente Alto terroir and how each expresses the diversity of the vineyard, contributes different characteristics, and adds complexity to each bottle of this icon. The Experience concludes with a visit to the Don Melchor Collection Room, where they will find every vintage of Don Melchor, from its debut release in 1987 to date, making “Collectors Experience” a unique opportunity to learn about and enjoy one of the world’s most emblematic wines. This exclusive experience is only available with prior reservation at www.donmelchorcollectorsexperience.com.

ERIC BOISSENOT
LEGENDARY FRENCH CONSULTANT VISITS CHILE The consulting winemaker was in Chile on March 5–7 to work with Enrique Tirado as part of the comprehensive advice he offers Don Melchor. Eric Boissenot, one of France’s most renowned enological consultants, began working as a consultant with his father, Jacques Boissenot, after receiving his degree in enology from Bordeaux and while pursuing his post-graduate studies. Today his clients include legendary wineries in France’s Médoc region, such as Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, and others. His work with Enrique Tirado, which began in the 1990s, includes tasting more than 140 samples that the Chilean winemaker takes to France every year to jointly prepare the final blend of each new vintage of Don Melchor.
6 · DON MELCHOR
And on occasion, the French consultant also visits the vineyards in Chile. During his visit to Chile, Boissenot tasted the wines that go into the new vintage of Don Melchor as well as previous vintages of the icon Cabernet Sauvignon from Alto Maipo to evaluate their evolution in the bottle. Taking advantage of his first visit to Chile in 5 years, the pair filmed videos for the launch of the 2016 vintage of Don Melchor, which was recently shown at Vinexpo Hong Kong, and also met with members of the local press.
INTERVIEW / CAPITAL MAGAZINE
THE GUARDIANS OF DON MELCHOR During his recent visit to Chile in early March, the renowned enological consultant Eric Boissenot and Enrique Tirado met with the national press. Here is their interview with Capital magazine.
Eric Boissenot of France—who has a legendary Bordeaux tradition—and Enrique Tirado of Chile are the winemakers behind the Concha y Toro classic that reaches its 30th vintage this year. The story goes something like this: in 1984, Concha y Toro began working on its Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto and sought advice from French winemakers. First from Emile Peynaud—probably the most renowned enological consultant at the time—who recommended working with Jacques Boissenot, one of his most exceptional followers.
The winemaker from Bordeaux worked with Don Melchor on every vintage from 1987 to 1998. In the 1990s, winemakers Enrique Tirado and Eric Boissenot, Jacques’ son, also joined the project. Jacques died in 2014, and since then Eric and Enrique make up the duo that make one of Chile’s most award-winning reds and that this year will release nothing less than its 30th vintage to market. In other words, it’s an adult wine now—and why not say it—from the old school.

“What we are today in the world is thanks to Cabernet Sauvignon.” (Enrique Tirado)
Is what you do with Don Melchor very different from your work in France? –Eric Boissenot (EB): In truth, it’s a continuation of the work my father was doing almost 30 years ago. It’s a territory I know very well. And it’s quite similar to what I do in Bordeaux because this is a unique terroir with a lot of character. It has some logical differences from the French region, but the similarity is that the singularity of the terroir allows us to make a wine with identity. That’s the key!
How do you complement each other to work from a distance? –Enrique Tirado (ET): We’re both headed in the same direction. We want to create the best expression of place every year, and we don’t interfere with that. There’s nothing to discuss because we’ve already resolved the most difficult aspects, which was where we were headed. –EB: We know the terroir and therefore we realized we weren’t getting its best expression, so we continued working until we did.
In the end, it’s the earth, the grape, and the climate that guide
VINTAGES AND VINTAGES Has Don Melchor changed over the course of so many vintages? –EB: Of course there are differences, but beyond that, we aren’t thinking about what has happened in the past when we’re making the blend. We’re focused on the present with the material before us, and that’s what we work with. We make the best we can for that year, and without thinking about the past. –ET: It’s a terroir with rocky soil and an influence from the Andes Mountains—those are unique characteristics. We have years that may be warmer or colder, with more rain or less, so there are always little shifts in the expression of each parcel, but it will always have the personality of Don Melchor.
So the continuity comes from years of work? –EB: The terroir is the guide, but we never try to make a copy of something we’ve made before.
the winemaker.
What happens if you’ve had a problematic year in the vineyard?
–EB: Yes. Our work consists of placing the most unique aspect, that which is par ticular of the terroir, in this wine, which is to say, to express it in every bottle.
–EB: Well, we would probably make less wine because we would have to make a stricter selection in the vineyards, and that way, we can conserve Don Melchor’s high level.
And what is the key to achieving that? –EB: Understanding and knowing the different zones and parcels of the vineyards very well in order to select the grapes at the time of harvest and not mix in anything by mistake. –ET: Although we use Cabernet Sauvignon almost exclusively, the parcels have their little differences, and that’s the diversity that finally enables us to create a great wine with complexities and different layers. If we didn’t have those nuances between the parcels, we would get a very simple, ver tical wine. 8 · DON MELCHOR
–ET: Not every year is the same. Rather than think about problems, we prefer to take them as a new challenge. So the only thing we can do is guide our vineyard and vinification work to be able to adapt to what has already happened. In the end, it’s a matter of adapting to the challenges of each season.
The 2016 vintage is number 30. What can you tell us about it? –ET: It will come out mid-year, and it’s a vintage that expresses the balance of the elements of Don Melchor very well. The balance of the tannins, the fruit, the flavors… It has a delicate texture and very good fruit expression.
“In a great wine, The terroir has to be stronger than trends. It’s that si mple a nd v it a l.” (Eric Boissenot)
I think that the word balance is key in this vintage. What do you think Eric? EB: Yes, it’s very good. The flavors don’t cancel out—they touch your soul!
THE BEST DAYS I understand that the blend is made in France. –ET: We always used to make it in Chile until 1998. First with Jacques, and later with Jacques and Eric, and then as of 1999 we have done it in Eric’s laboratory in Bordeaux. We send the samples, and then I go there, and we star t tasting until we reach the blend. That can take three or four days, or even more. We taste all the parcels and then see how to combine them. It’s impor tant to understand that Don Melchor is made like all the great wines of the Médoc (and the world) that Eric makes every year. –EB: And it’s a lot of work! From the grapes to the wine, from presses to barrels… Because everything has to be done separately to be very clear about the panorama when it’s time to blend. We couldn’t achieve excellence any other way due to the strength of the wine, and we could make a mistake with the amounts. I do the same thing with the French wines that I do with Don Melchor. Those blending days in Bordeaux are incredible because Enrique arrives with his cases and we get to work.
They must be intense days… –ET: They’re very demanding, but very creative at the same time. For me, they are probably the best days of the year because you see the results of the entire year and you put all your senses to work to make the best blend. –EB: We spend whole days in this, from morning to night. It’s also a very par ticular time of the year for me too because when I work with Bordeaux wines, I have meetings of two or three hours for each vineyard over a couple of weeks. But with the Don Melchor blend, the work is concentrated in those few days dedicated exclusively to that. And the truth is that I really look forward to it. We star t with a blank page and don’t know where we’re going to end up. We only know one thing: where
we want to go, because we know the vineyard and its expression, but the path to get there changes every year.
How would you define your relationship? –ET: I always felt very comfor table working with Jacques, and then with Eric. First, because there’s a relationship of friendship, and second, because we have always been very clear about the objective. Our work is not to make a wine that is similar to some other place or a wine like someone wants it to be for some reason. No. We want to get the best from and give value to the Don Melchor terroir. It has been like that since the first day we star ted working with the Boissenots. –EB: We can’t fool ourselves. If we make a blend that isn’t good, we have to star t all over again—we have no choice but to keep looking. We make a terroir wine, so we can’t change its identity. If we change it, we’re denying the terror and saying that it doesn’t exist. Because, as happens with all great wines—and Don Melchor is one of them—the terroir has to be stronger than the trends. It’s that simple and vital.
Do you believe that Cabernet Sauvignon is the Chilean wine that should go out and win over markets? More than Carmenere or other varieties? –ET: Absolutely. I think that Cabernet Sauvignon from good places represents Chile’s history and quality in winemaking, because we can make truly great wines with this variety in the Maipo [Valley]. I think that Carmenere, on the other hand, is a unique variety that allows us to differentiate ourselves, but what we are today in the world is thanks to Cabernet Sauvignon.

2018 HARVEST IN PEUMO
AN EXCELLENT YEAR FOR CARMÍN DE PEUMO Winemaker Marcio Ramírez sums up this year’s harvest in the Cachapoal Valley in general and more specifically in Peumo, the source of Concha y Toro’s icon Carmenere.
The har vest has come to an end, and the f inal bunches of Carmenere hanging in the Peumo vineyards were picked at the end of May. Winemaker Marcio Ramírez, who is in charge of the vineyards and winer y in Peumo, is more than satisf ied. “It was a ver y good year at the vineyards in Peumo because the ripeness—despite coming a little later than in previous years—reached the optimal quality that we were hoping for.” “At f irst we thought it would be hard to reach the ideal ripeness because the season was running a bit late, but then when we began tasting the grapes in mid-April we realized that they were beginning to show the characteristics of a good year for Carmenere in Peumo,” Marcio explains. Generally speaking, the 2017–2018 season was cooler than the previous season and had a bit more rain fell at the time that the plants need water to develop correctly. Unlike the 2016 –2017 season, which was warmer, this year’s temperatures were lower, and the rain held off until the end of the har vest. Ever y thing happened slowly and at just the right time. The later rainfall meant the grapes were able to hang longer and under conditions that allowed them to reach optimal ripeness because the vines kept their leaves that protect the grapes until the end of the season. In the end, it was a normal year, which allowed the har vest to take place between May 10 and 28, with a concentration from May 23 to 25 in Block 32, which corresponds to Carmín de Peumo.
18 · CARMÍN DE PEUMO
What can we expect from the Carmeneres from Peumo in 2018, and especially from Carmín de Peumo? It was a great har vest. We obtained wines that may not be as concentrated, but that are marked by a lot of ripe red fruit. They are fresh and especially ver y elegant, and that elegance will cer tainly be one of the most predominant characteristics of the 2018 vintage of Carmín de Peumo. What would you say is the biggest difference from other years? The 2017, which is more like the 2007, is more concentrated and has more tannins. The 2015 is marked by its concentration. The 2014 is a bit like that, although the year was a little cooler. The wines from 2018 seem a bit more like those of 2008, with a predominance of elegance. It’s also a bit like the 2014, which was also a cooler year. They are a ref lection of the vineyard in Peumo. Although it is still ver y early to know how these wines will evolve over time, we are cer tain that the grapes—where it all begins—have reached the optimal quality and ripeness needed for a great wine.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST CARMENERES A remarkable 93 points for the 2014 Carmín de Peumo—the icon Carmenere from Chile—in the June edition of Wine & Spirits, one of the most important magazines in the international wine world.
The 2014 Carmín de Peumo, from Block 32 of the Peumo Vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley, not only stood out for its excellent score, but also because it is located among the best Carmeneres in the world. Carmenere has grown in Peumo for more than 100 years, making it the most widely recognized origin for the variety in the world because it has the ideal conditions for growing properly ripened grapes that result in deep, concentrated wines with smooth and elegant tannins.
93 pts Carmín de Peumo 2014 “There is a density and intoxicating depth to this wine’s ripe red fruit. Carmenere tannins are rarely aggressive, and here, they feel particularly sleek and smooth. The f lavors are long and intense, full of delicate herbal and spicy details. Ignacio Recabarren included small amounts of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc in the blend for extra structure in the voluptuous 2014 vintage.” Wine & Spirits.

20 TH ANNIVERSARY
TERRUNYO WRITES THE HISTORY OF CARMENERE IN CHILE The 2018 vintage marks Concha y Toro’s 20th year of working with Carmenere for its Terrunyo line, which makes Peumo Chile’s best origin for the production of the variety. Concha y Toro took a chance on Carmenere more than 20 years ago, when the variety had f irst come to light in Chile. It was clearly a decisive step in the histor y of the countr y’s wine industr y and the evolution of variety in Chile. After being rediscovered by ampelographer Jean Michel Boursiquot in 1994 —after a hundred years of oblivion— Carmenere was returned to glor y in Chile, which came to be known as the home of the variety. With the launch of the Terrunyo line—and with it, Chile’s f irst ultrapremium Carmenere, Concha y Toro has been working with the variety since 1996. Shor tly thereafter, the team led by winemaker Ignacio Recabarren realized that the Peumo Vineyard—one of the company’s oldest—was able to produce a complex, potent, and voluptuous Carmenere with good structure. The f irst vintage of Terrunyo Carmenere soon followed and was bottled in 1998. It marked an impor tant milestone for the winer y, and the wine quickly become a benchmark in the Chilean wine industr y. Today, 20 years after Terrunyo’s f irst vintage, the line has earned major accolades that speak to its quality and consistency, and the most impor tant specialized media from around the world have named it the Best Carmenere of Chile on many occasions. The Peumo Vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley is one of the company’s oldest, and Carmenere was planted there, mixed in with other Bordeaux grapes a centur y ago. Today Peumo is considered the home of Carmenere in Chile. Its soils and climate are two vital factors for achieving exceptional quality Carmenere such as that reached by Terrunyo ever y year. The deep soils retain moisture thanks to a top layer of clay. This enables the vines to remain active until late May when the Carmenere is har vested. The climate is inf luenced by two impor tant factors, the Cachapoal River and Lake Rapel, which moderate the temperatures in the summer and give rise to cool nights that produce smooth, concentrated tannins and ver y lively anthocyanins. The Terrunyo Carmenere specif ically comes from Block 27 of the Peumo Vineyard, which stands out for being on the banks of the Cachapoal River and having silty-clay soils, characteristics that deliver elegance, complexity, and tremendous structure to the wine.

MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA BRITISH EXPERTS TASTE THE NEW VARIETIES During the month of February, two of the United Kingdom’s most influential wine critics—Peter Richards and Patrick Schmitt—had the opportunity to taste the latest wines from Marques de Casa Concha.
Wine writer, critic, and Master of Wine Peter Richards recently met with winemaker Sebastián Rodríguez to taste three wines from the Marques de Casa Concha line. He remarked on the 2017 Cinsault Rosé’s light color, good texture, and acidity and called it a serious rosé that adds a plus to the category as well as a new wine to the line’s Ediciones Limitadas. Upon tasting the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, he acknowledged that this classic Chilean wine has evolved with the times and is now fresher due to earlier harvesting and aging in fouders in combination with barrels. Richards also had the oppor tunity to taste the line’s latest release, Etiqueta Negra, which he recognized for its complexity, elegance, and tremendous aging potential. Addicionally winemaker Marcelo Papa sat down with Patrick Schmitt MW, editor-in-chief of The Drinks Business, to present the 2016 Chardonnay, the 2017 Cinsault Rosé, and the 2016 Etiqueta Negra, all from the Marques de Casa Concha line. Schmitt commented on the Chardonnay’s fruity character and citrus and mineral notes that produced a perfect harmony among the tannins, sweetness, and toast. He also praised the Rosé’s elegance and Provençal style. But the star of the day was the new blend from the Alto Maipo Valley, Etiqueta Negra, which has a strong sense of origin.

Once the identities of the wines were revealed, it was Marcelo Papa’s turn to present the 2016 Marques de Casa Concha Etiqueta Negra, which had already earned excellent scores from James Suckling and Tim Atkin. In speaking about this new wine from the Alto Maipo Valley, Marcelo emphasized its tremendous elegance, complexity, and sense of origin. Each of the varieties in the 2016 vintage lends a specific characteristic to the final blend. The 60% Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, the 32% Cabernet Franc adds fruity character, and the 8% Petit Verdot offers complexity. Fur thermore, 16 months of aging in French oak barrels result in a wine with firm tannins, well-integrated oak, and tremendous body, character, and tension.
NEW YORK
SUCCESSFUL NEW VERSION OF DESCORCHADOS IN THE USA Marques de Casa Concha participated with the 2016 vintages of the line’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Chardonnay. Chilean wine critic Patricio Tapia launched the latest edition of his Descorchados wine guide in New York City on June 5. The event began with a seminar for members of the specialized media, sommeliers, and wine buyers during which Tapia spoke about unexplored places for wine production and how the limits are being pushed to create new origins, such as the valleys at the nor thern and southern extremes of Chile—and Marques de Casa Concha is a faithful example of that. The seminar was followed by a fair during which the public was able to taste nearly 300 wines from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, including the Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Chardonnay as well as some varieties from the Gran Reserva Serie Riberas line.

A CONSISTENTLY 90+ POINT BRAND Marques de Casa Concha received scores topping 90 points in the US critic’s latest report on Chile after his last visit. US wine critic James Suckling met with winemaker Marcelo Papa to taste a selection of Marques de Casa Concha wines during his visit to Chile in mid-February. The results were later revealed during the Prowein fair held in Dusseldorf, Germany, where the critic once again praised the quality and consistency of the Marques de Casa Concha line, which received scores of 90 or more points for every variety. The 2016 Marques de Casa Concha Etiqueta Negra was one of the wines that Suckling singled out with 93 points for its inaugural vintage. The critic praised this blend from Puente Alto as “This is a dense and racy red with dark berry and hints of walnuts and currants. Black chocolate, too. Full body, tight and focused with an excellent energy. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot. New wine with excellent structure.”
The 2016 vintage of the Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon and the Syrah both received 93 points as well. He said of the Cabernet Sauvignon, “One of the great values in cabernet.” while from Syrah he highlighted the “lovely acidity, lots of crunchy dark fruit and a mineral yet generous finish.” The 2017 Cinsault Rosé—another of Marcelo Papa’s innovations for the Marques de Casa Concha line—was also well received by the critic, who gave it 92 points, saying “I love this new rosé that is bright and very clean with flowers such as rose petal and peach as well. Medium body. Very dry and delicate. A pure rosé that is reminiscent of those from Provence.” And finally, confirming yet again that the Marques de Casa Concha line consistently obtains 90+ scores, the 2016 Carmenere received 90 points, and was praised for its “lighter notes of cranberry pie, blueberry sauce and some herbal essence. Medium body, fresh acidity and a pretty finish.”
