In recent years, the UAE capital has drawn the world’s attention to its thriving arts and culture scene, captivating both art lovers and artists alike. Thanks to the development of Saadiyat Cultural District, the last decade has borne witness to Abu Dhabi’s inspiring transformation into a notable art hub, welcoming talent from all around the globe to contribute to its ever-expanding cultural ecosystem. When Louvre Abu Dhabi opened its doors in 2017 as the region’s first universal museum, it made a global impact. It was a milestone moment for a country that was still gaining ground in the international art community. But when the museum welcomed its first batch of visitors, Abu Dhabi rose to prominence in the art world, and since then, there has been no looking back. In the two years that followed, the museum has expanded its permanent showcase, which boasts more than 600 masterpieces ranging from the third millennium BCE through to the present. New acquisitions have been proudly displayed with an array of exhibitions that have traced the movement of art from the beginning of time. A new exhibition at the Children’s Museum, A Costume Adventure, has also recently opened, offering junior art enthusiasts the opportunity to learn more about the costumes of the characters found in some of the museum’s artworks. In September this year, Louvre Abu Dhabi ushered in a new season under the theme of Changing Societies, with four new exhibitions taking centre stage until July 2020, the first of which is currently underway. And as the museum prepares to wrap up the showcase, Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co. (1990-1939), running until December 7, another equally inspiring display is set to steal the spotlight this month. Titled 10,000 Years of Luxury, the exhibition will allow visitors in the region to step back in time and explore the origins of luxury in the world and the Middle East as well as its ever-changing perceptions across cultures and eras. Organised by Louvre Abu Dhabi, Musée des Arts Décoratifs as well as Agence France-Muséums and sponsored by luxury department store Tryano, the exhibition will run until February 18, 2020.

Close to 350 objects ranging from the fields of fashion, jewellery, visual art, furniture and design will be on display, offering visitors a chance to glimpse, revel in and evaluate true luxury. Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, says: “In this exhibition, we are exploring humanity’s connection to luxury across time and cultures, taking a long lens on the subject from ancient treasures to present-day haute couture.” The exhibition considers luxury as a vehicle for understanding the social, economic and political circumstances of a specific time period as well as how notions of value have evolved throughout history. Through its showcase, it will highlight how various aspects of luxury have fascinated humans over time. It will also take a closer look at the array of techniques and materials that have characterised luxury objects from the beginning of time. In keeping with this focus, everything from ancient divine offerings to iconic pieces from fashion houses will be on display. Some prominent works include a Mamluk carpet from Egypt dating back to the 15th century, an hourglass by Australian designer Marc Newson. Vintage and contemporary creations from the houses of Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Karl Lagerfeld, Azzedine Alaïa, Maison Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermès and more will also be part of the showcase.

Olivier Gabet, Director of Musée des Arts Décoratifs, adds: “Luxury is everywhere in our world today – surrounding us in objects, images and language. This exhibition gathers rare artefacts kept in French National Collections, but also precious archaeological pieces recently unveiled in Abu Dhabi. It will offer a new way of understanding the notion of luxury and its historical roots.” 10,000 Years of Luxury will unfold across 12 rooms, beginning in antiquity and ending in the present day. The earliest forms of luxury will be represented by objects from ancient Middle Eastern and Mediterranean empires, most of which derived their value from their cost, the rarity of the materials they were composed of and their social significance. The showcase will then chart the movement of luxury around the globe through expanding trade routes. The exhibition also emphasises the role Paris played in the meteoric rise of the luxury market in the 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to an increase in the number of decorative art dealers known as marchand-mercier in the French city. Here, visitors will experience a recreation of an 18th-century Parisian boutique, displaying the ingenious work of the marchand-mercier and the first forms of commercialised luxury. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements resulted in the creation of lavish objects, which will also be presented, followed closely by 20th-century perceptions of the concept which saw natural and simple materials becoming more popular. In tandem with 10,000 Years of Luxury, Louvre Abu Dhabi will present an olfactory installation titled USO – The Perfumed Cloud, where USO stands for Unidentified Scented Object. The piece invites visitors to journey through a spiral staircase that leads to a perfumed cloud. Based on rare experiences that “money can’t buy”, the cultural programme around the exhibition will feature pop-up performances by international artists, musicians and dancers. Another highlight is the world premiere of digital interactive snow globes. When Yas Marina Circuit plays host to the 2019 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 1, a trio of gifted young drivers will be hoping to end the season on a high and prove that they are the future of the sport. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris were all in their formative years when the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was held back in 2009. At the time, each youngster was honing their skills on karting circuits and no doubt dreaming of the day they could compete against the best drivers in the world. Fast forward a decade and all three will battle it out in the final race of the season, eager to demonstrate their talent and show that they will be the next generation to compete for the coveted title. The youngest of the three, Norris, was not even a teenager when Sebastian Vettel stormed to victory under the lights at Yas Marina

Circuit in the final race of the 2009 season. Now, the 19-year-old will be lining up alongside the four-time world champion as he brings his debut season in F1 to a close. The British driver has been in love with motor racing ever since he claimed pole position in his first national karting event at the age of seven. Having excelled in various championships, winning the European Formula 3 title in 2017 and then finishing as runner-up in the 2018 Formula 2 season, Norris was handed a seat with McLaren. This impressive early season form even led to comparisons with Lewis Hamilton, who has triumphed four times in Abu Dhabi and is the most successful British driver of all time. He earned his first points in just his second race, claiming sixth in Bahrain, and has regularly finished inside the top 10 this season.

While Norris has played down any comparisons to Hamilton, he hopes to soon gain his maiden victory and help McLaren get back to the top level of the sport. “When Lewis was at McLaren, he was in a winning car and I’m not, but that’s my goal,” Norris said earlier this season. “My aim is to try and win races and get on the podium. I want to get McLaren back into a position that they deserve to be in.” While Norris’ chance of victory in Abu Dhabi will be slim, both Verstappen and Leclerc will be hoping to end impressive campaigns with a win and prove that they will continue to be championship contenders for years to come. Frenchman Leclerc is just in his second full season and has enthralled Ferrari fans, consistently battling for victories and often getting the better of his far more experienced, and successful, teammate, Vettel. He gained his maiden victory in Belgium and then backed up that drive by taking the chequered flag in Italy. Such has been his consistency that Hamilton is expecting to be battling the 22-year-old for the title in years to come. The Mercedes driver said: “To continuously, from race one, outperform, outqualify and out-drive a four-time world champion is not easy to do. There’s a lot more greatness to come from him and I’m looking forward to seeing his growth and racing alongside him.” Leclerc is certainly used to winning, having finished first in the 2016 GP3 Series and claiming the championship crown in his one and only season in Formula 2. And while he is considered a precocious talent, he perhaps does not possess the raw talent of fellow youngster Verstappen. The 23-year-old Dutch driver holds numerous “firsts” in Formula One, including being the youngest driver to compete in an F1 race back in 2015, the youngest Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel

Exploring new depths —— Concierge takes a deep dive with Panerai to discover the UAE’s historical wreck sites while learning about the origins of the brand’s first diving watch, the Radiomir, crafted exclusively for the Royal Italian Navy

The Second World War ravaged most of Europe but its effects were felt far beyond the continent. Even the depths of the Gulf of Oman continue to hold secrets from the war, some of which were only recently discovered. Deep beneath the waves, 25 nautical miles off the coast of Fujairah, lies the wreck of the U-533, a German U-boat. It is beyond the limits of all except a handful of expert divers equipped to survive the plunge 108 metres into the waters. But those who’ve embraced the challenge believe that only a few other wreck sites in the world are as interesting as the sunken submarine. The U-533 was a Nazi German U-boat that operated under the command of Helmut Hennig. These military submarines were used extensively during the First and Second World Wars to enforce naval blockades against enemy shipping. Merchant convoys bringing supplies to the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and the Allied territories in the Mediterranean were their primary targets. The U-533 first launched in September 1942 and set course for the Indian Ocean in July 1943. The months that followed were routine, but the events of October 16 forever changed the fate of the 53 crew members. On this day, the Blenheim Mark V – a British Royal Air Force (RAF) bomber piloted by Lewis Chapman – took off on a patrol from Sharjah’s coast. Although the UAE was not an active theatre of war, the RAF at Sharjah played an important role in keeping an eye out for U-boats trying to disrupt oil tankers essential to the supply of Allied forces. As the Blenheim Mark V veered east across the Al Hajar mountains and into the Gulf of Oman, the crew spotted the Nazi submarine and instantly dropped four depth charges. Although the U-boat tried to dive, the attempt was futile and it sank to the bottom, with 52 mariners’ lives lost on board. One survived by staying afloat in heavy seas without a life jacket for more than a day, but the details of how he escaped the plummeting submarine remain unknown. Günther Schmidt was found and picked up by local fishermen in Sharjah, only to be then taken as a prisoner of war, where he remained until 1945. “It is very interesting to dive old wrecks with such significant history of the war. It is almost like diving right into a moment that has witnessed

the numerous sacrifices people made during those times,” says Simon Nadim, a Lebanese diving instructor who has completed more than a dozen dives to the wreck site of the U-boat. “When I first heard about the wreck, it piqued my curiosity because this particular submarine was known to be in exceptional shape. Most vessels found underwater come to lie on the ocean floor as a result of serious damage either from implosions or explosions. But with the U-boat, you can see the hit only at the stern around the propeller. Also, it lies flat at the bottom, which makes the distinct features of the submarine still recognisable.” Nadim points out: “Along with its fascinating history, the abundance of aquatic species that now inhabit the wreck have made it a prized site for advanced divers. It’s a marine sanctuary down there and you’ll find several colourful species native to this side of the world that you won’t usually come across.” But it is the challenging 108-metre journey to the bottom that makes the privilege of entering this other universe available only to a select few. Fortunately, there are several other dive sites off the UAE coast that are within easy reach of those seeking underwater adventure. Dibba Rock, Snoopy Island, Martini Rock and Inchcape 2 in Fujairah are popular among those keen to explore the colourful world living beneath the water’s surface. For a more advanced challenge, Nadim points out that the Ines wreck of 1999 that went down 12 kilometres off the coast of Fujairah is also a bucket-list item. The Ines was an oil tanker that broke into two pieces in 1999 after an explosion on board and sank with 30 crew members. While 24 sailors were rescued, one died and five are still missing. Today, one half of the wreck lies 70 metres below the surface. The missing half was thought to be lost forever, but it was discovered earlier this year by Nadim and his team. “I was always intrigued by the Ines and kept investigations running to find the missing piece. Local fishermen pointed to a spot where their nets would get snagged and that’s where we started to look. Eventually we found the bow, about 500 metres from the stern and further researched proved that it was indeed the Ines.”

Although the newly-discovered site is slowly gaining popularity, it still remains a feat only the brave dare to conquer. “Diving is not something you take lightly. You need to take into consideration the weather and sea conditions in this part of the world and prepare accordingly.” But Nadim still believes that wrecks such as these that are being discovered in the waters of the UAE are challenging the notion that the country is only popular for the world above its waters. “Besides the intriguing wrecks, the UAE’s waters offer the perfect training environment because the circumstances are not always ideal and this allows the flexibility to experience a variety of diving conditions and prepare for the unknown.” Parallels can be drawn between the UAE’s history with WWII and Panerai’s heritage. Before the war, an elite programme was curated for the Royal Italian Navy, referred to as the “Frogmen”, who were renowned for their exceptional diving skills. These ocean-faring heroes had to withstand very harsh conditions during underwater operations and therefore had to be equipped with equally effective equipment. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Panerai was the official supplier of technical and precision diving tools to the navy including high-performance timepieces. The Panerai Radiomir has the distinction of being the brand’s first dive model that was used exclusively by the Italian commandos during WWII. But the model’s history dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when Guido Panerai, the grandson of founder Giovanni, created the timepiece to enhance underwater legibility for dive watches. He used a radium-based powder, from which the Radiomir derived its name, and the patent was filed in 1916. Development of the prototype began in 1936 and production started in 1938 for the commandos of the First Submarine Group during WWII. Instantly recognisable even today, the timepiece features a 47mm cushionshaped case with a unique dial design, hand-wound movement and water-resistant

Swiss watchmaker Breitling raises the curtain on a new Avenger collection before the brand assumes its role as the official timekeeper for Dubai Airshow The universe of horology shares inextricable links with the world of aeronautics. But only a few brands can boast a legacy in aviation as rich as Breitling. Now an integral part of the standard aviator’s kit, Breitling timepieces have won the favour of pilots through the years, thanks to their functionality and build that has been evolving over time – in much the same way as the planes that they fly. Although Breitling officially started supplying onboard chronographs only in the late 1930s, the Swiss luxury watchmaker’s story began in 1884. Rising on the back of the industrial revolution, it was a time of rapid development and technological advancement as well as cultural change. As everything from science to sport was undergoing transformation, Leon Breitling knew there was a need for horology to keep apace too, especially in the field of aviation. As man took to the skies in flying machines for the first time in history, the one piece of technology missing from the big picture was an easy-to-use timer that also freed up pilots’ hands during the tricky task of takeoff. The trend of the decade was pocket watches, but their fobs and chains made it a chaotic choice for the cockpit. This inspired Leon’s son Gaston to create one of the world’s first wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the watch crown, which was revealed in 1915, a year after his father’s passing. Inspired by the pioneering spirit, innovative flair and insatiable passion for chronographs he shared with his father, the watch continued to evolve under his leadership. The developments and decades that followed saw the brand take flight and reach greater heights. From new pilots’ wristwatches to dashboard instruments that helped keep time and navigate while in the air, Breitling made the cockpit a more functional space. “Aviation has always been a core of our DNA. There is no other brand with such history linked to aviation as Breitling. Without a doubt, Breitling is one of the most admired and sought-after watch brands for aviation professionals today,” said CEO Georges Kern. “In 1936, the brand introduced an aviator chronograph with a black dial, striking luminescent numerals and a practical rotating bezel whose pointer arrow also glowed in the dark. It was the beginning of a link to aviation that resonates to this very day. Our pilots’ watches have distinguished themselves for decades and continue to be the best aviation watches in the world.” Following the establishment of the Huit Aviation Department in 1938, Breitling became the official chronograph for the country’s Royal Air Force and a key part of the efforts of WWII. The 1940s ushered in the more elegant, non-military chronographs, using precious metals such as solid gold. But the brand recorded another milestone in 1952 with the debut of a watch that remains an icon to this day. Kern explained: “The Breitling Navitimer is a portmanteau of the words navigation and timer. Equipped with the flight-specific slide rule that is dedicated to measuring all sorts of inflight timings, it is little wonder that countless pilots, airlines and aircraft manufacturers have opted for this timepiece ever since.” The popularity of the Navitimer also promoted an increase in its appearance on civilian wrists. And thanks to its success, Breitling instruments were soon installed into the finest propeller and jet aircraft of the era, an enormous achievement for the brand during the golden age of air travel. Not keen to rest on their laurels, Breitling ventured outside the realm of pilots’ watches, having conquered the skies, to make its mark on land and sea with innovative timepieces. “In 1957, Breitling mastered the sea with the launch of its Superocean watch. Built to withstand the demands of professional and leisure divers alike, it is another Breitling design that has stood up to the test of time as well as the pressures of the real world. “Breitling was even there at the dawn of manned space travel, when on May 24, 1962, US astronaut Scott Carpenter wore a Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute, made at his own request, on his space flight. The world’s most popular motor racing sport serves as the inspiration to Richard Mille’s numerous timepiece collections and on the eve of the biggest race of the year, the 2019 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, we delve into the brand’s history and legacy

Swiss luxury watchmaker Richard Mille has, in a short time, become synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and luxury. The story begins in 1998 when founder Mille broke away from French jeweller Mauboussin at the Place Vendôme to create his own range of watches. The first model released in 2001 and though some thought of it as a risk, with his vast network and experience in the industry, it was a risk that paid off. At the age of 50, he decided to set up his own brand, with the idea of pushing watchmaking beyond anything that existed at the time. A new, 21st-century approach to horology was his main objective, which resulted in him teaming up with his friend Dominique Guenat, owner of Swiss jewellery and watchmaking manufacture Montres Valgine, who agreed to go into business with him. The original plan was to develop just one product, the watch of his dreams, a model for which production costs were not even a consideration. When the RM 001 was released in 2001, its AED816,570 price tag placed the fledgling brand at the summit of the luxury watch market, with inevitably low sales projections. However, it was met with immediate success and several hundred orders were confirmed for the very sparingly manufactured model. Today, the brand has definitively reached the pinnacle of watchmaking with a collection of some 60 pieces, each having been designed and produced with the same passion and uncompromising principles that guided the brand’s first no-expense-spared timepiece. The technology behind Formula 1 race cars has played a pivotal role as the inspiration for the watches, from the concepts to the materials. In fact, each watch is perceived as a supercar, with a mission of meeting the highest standards of security and precision, from the characteristic, ergonomic shape of the watchcase, which has now become the brand’s iconic visual identity, to the attention to detail down to every screw, lever and spring.

“As a youngster, I would spend hours attending aerospace and motor shows only to look at cutaway views of engines. These drawings would give me insight into the complex mechanics powering these machines,” says Mille. It is this approach to watchmaking that defines the brand’s operations today. Functionality, inspired by the automobile industry, has always been the highest priority for the brand but aesthetics have their place as well and elegance is not forsaken. This is demonstrated in the brand’s clean designs for the men’s collections and the use of gemstones for ladies watches. Mille explains: “Luxury products that have no genuine purpose have never interested me. I have always considered that the functions we integrate into our watches must be truly useful and valuable for users. “Each component is part of the aesthetic expression of this functionality. Also, each and every aesthetic modification we make –even if it’s just recalibrating a line – is always motivated by an improvement in functionality.”

Exceptional functionality was also at the heart of the world’s lightest watch, the RM 27-01 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, worn by the tennis ace during his tournaments. The kitchens at Marina Social are buzzing with energy. Chef Jason Atherton is in an upbeat mood. The team is busy preparing to welcome the crowds later in the evening – the first to sample the season’s latest additions to the award-winning menu. As packed as his schedule might be, the celebrity chef always finds the time to visit the emirate to celebrate anniversaries of his popular venue and introduce new menu items. “Dubai will always remain close to my heart. This is where I met my wife and also opened my first restaurant with Gordon Ramsay. And finally, I launched my own.” In Dubai’s competitive market – one that sees frequent restaurant openings and a few closures too – Jason’s venue at InterContinental Dubai Marina remains a firm favourite, running strong for four years now. But with the celebrity chef at the helm, expect nothing less. That is why it is hard to fathom, this wasn’t always the dream. In fact, growing up, Jason did not even know he wanted to be a chef until the age of 13, when the vocation came calling. “My family wasn’t a foodie family at all. We didn’t go out to restaurants as my parents thought it was a waste of money. Also in the 70s, the United Kingdom had one of the worst restaurant scenes on the planet. But one of the things that piqued my curiosity in the kitchen was my parents’ guesthouse. People would rent rooms and my mom would cook fresh food. I was always fascinated with her baking skills. She would get flour and eggs and make chocolate sponge or chocolate custard from scratch. On Fridays, she would cook fresh fish and I just loved it. “But what really sparked it for me was the British Royal Airforce. Every summer, they used to set up a massive caravan on the seafront of Skegness, showcasing the different aspects of army and navy life to encourage people to join. They used to serve all sorts of delicious food for free. I remember seeing the chefs in beautiful tall white hats and neck kerchiefs, and I was mesmerised by their uniforms. It worked for me. So I joined the Army Catering Corps although I didn’t stay there too long because I hated the discipline. But I still wanted to be a chef because I enjoyed cooking.” Following a few stints at local restaurants in Skegness, Jason moved to London, where he worked his way up the culinary ladder, eventually finding himself positioned as Gordon Ramsay’s right-hand man. But nine years later, he left to set up his own venture. “I gambled everything. I remortgaged my house, borrowed huge sums of money and burned through my savings. If it didn’t work, I would be finished.” When Pollen Street Social finally opened in 2011, it became an overnight success. And the rest is history. Today, Jason oversees more than 20 restaurants around the globe (including a new venue in Mayfair that opened last month). He has also authored five best-selling cookbooks and has a successful television show. With so much to his name, you’d be forgiven for thinking the celebrity chef is keen to rest on his laurels, but Jason feels his career has only just begun.“Gordon Ramsay told me many years ago that it is important to pace yourself because it’s a marathon.

“It starts from the day you begin your career and ends the day you retire. You’ve got to be consistent the whole way through. It’s best to run the same pace all the way and achieve things gradually rather than sprint, run out of breath and walk the rest of it. “I don’t want to be a flash in the pan. I love to learn new things about different cultures and foods, and constantly evolve my restaurants. It makes me feel like I have just started. I still have many years ahead of me and I’m looking forward to opening more restaurants, championing new ideas and pushing myself as a cook.” Managing his global outposts is no easy task but Jason still believes that he is first and foremost a chef and not a businessman. “The dream only ever was to be a good cook and that exists even today. But if you go around the world, patting yourself on the back, you don’t like to hear about the bad stuff. That attitude keeps you stagnant; there’s no room for growth. “No matter how successful a venue might become, it’s important to accept that every restaurant has unhappy customers and gets things wrong. We all have bad days and several things go awry but it is important to learn from those mistakes. “If you sweep it under the carpet and think it’s alright, then you’re going to have more of those bad days. When Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort debuted its signature Italian restaurant, Mare Mare, earlier this year, the capital’s gourmands made a beeline to sample a rare delicacy that the venue introduced to the UAE’s dining scene. Imported from the coast of Mazara del Vallo in southwest Sicily, the restaurant brought raw, red prawns to our platters for the very first time, and made for a truly applaud-worthy entrance. Simply drizzled with a rich, buttery sauce and topped with truffle shavings to enhance its fresh flavour, every bite delicately melts in the mouth, leaving you wanting more. Naturally, no visit to Mare Mare is complete without sampling these delightful treats from the Mediterranean coast. Nestled on the shores of Saadiyat Island, it’s the Arabian Gulf views that make the setting at Mare Mare. Beyond the white sands, endless vistas of the blue waters meet your gaze and during the cooler months, it is advisable to grab a table on the outdoor deck to make the most of the stunning surrounds. While Mare Mare serves up a wonderful lunch and dinner, evening visits miss one key factor – the views. But what it lacks in the backdrop after sunset, it makes up for in ambience, with glistening lights completing the dreamy set-up.

Italian restaurants are present in plenty in the UAE, but only a handful stand out from the crowd. Thanks to the delicious bites complementing the gorgeous setting, Mare Mare definitely makes the list. At the helm is chef Simone Federici, whose passion for Italian flavours translates in splendid creations sure to please even the discerning diner. Simplicity is key with the appetisers. The chefs rely on wholesome ingredients, amplified only by a handful of flavours to highlight the freshness of the produce. We started off with the creamy burrata, served with heirloom tomatoes and topped with basil pesto. While we were more than happy to split one platter among our party of two, given the generous portion, our server recommended opting for another delicacy from the crudi bar – the tuna tartare – a top pick among frequent visitors. Creatively presented, the dish is served with avocado and finished with drops of sour cream and a squid-ink cracker for crunch. Jumping on to our mains, the daily specials caught our attention – the only challenge (or so we thought) was that we fancied the Monday speciality during our Friday visit. But our server gladly obliged and locked in the Venetian clam spaghetti for our main course. For future reference, Sunday specials feature lobster, beef and vegan burgers, perfectly paired with wines. Tuesdays are all about steak, where juicy ribeye cuts are served with Italian red wine. On Wednesdays, diners can opt for a true taste of coastal Italy with fresh lobster, cooked to your liking, and served with taglioni pasta. We were told that no diner leaves without trying the raw or cooked seafood platter, the ideal choice for sharing. And while the raw tower features seasonal delicacies including oysters, prawns and salmon, we opted for the fritto misto with crispy calamari, tempura shrimp, fish fingers and fresh veggies. The platter is served with a saffron and spice-infused aioli and makes for a decadent lunchtime treat, when all you’re looking to do is savour every bite while enjoying a laid-back Friday afternoon by the sea.

Home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and diving experiences, the Maldives is high on the wish list for those seeking the ultimate escape. Letisha Pereira sampled a slice of this island paradise at Oblu Select by Atmosphere at Sangeli

Scattered like pearls across the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean, the archipelago of Maldives has long lured travellers from far and wide. Few other destinations boast such pure and soft white sands along with cyan waters so clear that it is possible to gaze right into the colourful, living world beneath the waves. At Oblu Select by Atmosphere at Sangeli, we discovered that this is an essential part of the experience, enjoying luxury and nature side by side. But the island is also rife with opportunities for adventure, which starts on the journey from Malé International Airport to Sangeli Island, on which the resort sits. The five-star treatment began with a luxe air-conditioned speedboat carving through the waters of the Indian Ocean to take us to our destination. The 50-minute ride also passed by several other resorts that call the Malé Atoll home, making for some interesting sightseeing. Accompanying us on board during our arrival was the hotel’s executive chef, who was bringing back a trophy and several medals that the team won at a local culinary fair. It was a sign of things to come, preparing us for a truly rewarding experience at the hotel.

Once we arrived at the resort, we were met with the warmest of greetings – the sound of beating drums, singing and clapping, with the best treat of all being the hotel’s signature blue bubbly, created especially to reflect the colour of the waters surrounding the property. The moment we stepped in, it felt like we’d traded the world’s bustle for a secluded slice of paradise. Given the resort’s vast footprint, our hosts offered a buggy tour of the island highlighting everything it has to offer. But we were also told that bicycles were freely available to borrow from various points on the property, so we decided to hop right on after checking in and explore the island with the easy reference map of the resort provided to every guest. The resort sits on the main island of Sangeli and is connected to the smaller, adults-only One Banyan island by a string of overwater villas. The larger of the two is home to standalone beachfront villas, the sunset bar known as The Rock, the beachfront bar called The Sangs and the hotel’s signature restaurant, The Courtyard. On One Banyan, two speciality restaurants – Simply Veg and Just Grill – the spa and the overwater honeymoon suites can be found.

Our first evening at the resort saw us taking in the sights and sounds of a heavy downpour from the comfort of our cosy beachfront villa as the waves gently lapped against the shore. Complete with a pool, it was the perfect setting to take a dip and admire the endless Indian Ocean. That’s the beauty of the Maldives; even though we were left with no option but to stay indoors with the rain lashing down, we found that the hours simply flew by admiring the stunning views. But as soon as the grey clouds gave way to clear blue skies, we jumped right into the ocean for a refreshing soak in its warm, calming waters. Early evening, and every sunset thereafter, lured us to The Rock on the southernmost tip of the property, known for its stunning views. As we sipped on sundowners and watched the sky’s transformation from bright blue to fiery orange, we lost all sense of time and became entranced by the shoals of young lemon sharks, vibrant parrotfish and rays that scuttered close to the surface seeking their last nibbles of the day. With most activities in the Maldives focussed in and around the water, it’s easy to assume that this is no place for non-swimmers. But the resort caters even to non-swimming guests, much like my travel partner, who discovered a new-found love for the world beneath the waves. Life vests are provided in every room for free use in the water and complimentary snorkelling equipment, including a mask, snorkel and fins, can be borrowed for the entire duration of the stay. For us, this meant we could freely and safely float on the water to admire the colourful fish swimming alongside us and other never-beforeseen marine species on the seabed at any time of the day. Every time we stepped into the water, a different experience awaited us. In one instance, we even found ourselves endlessly followed by a tiny fish who was probably very intrigued by the strangers in the ocean. Tempted as we were to spend our entire holiday in or near the water, Oblu Select by Atmosphere at Sangeli offered a lot more. The resort is a haven for foodies. Every meal was a true showcase of culinary indulgence, starting with the sumptuous breakfast buffet served at The Courtyard, overflowing with classics from all over the world – think eggs served in all styles, baked beans, sausage, pancakes, waff les, Indian chapatis and dosas as well as Maldivian curries.

Every morning, we’d wake up in time to catch the sunrise and join in an energising power yoga session by the beach (we’re now inspired to keep up the practice). This would work up our appetites for the hearty breakfast that awaited us. The Courtyard is also where lunch and dinner are served with specialities from all over the world. Live cooking stations feature fresh delights whipped up for lunch while themed nights bring international dishes all the way from the Med and the Caribbean to the shores of the Maldives. The Indian Ocean themed night, hosted every Friday, was a firm favourite, but our friendly servers told us that it is extremely popular with every hotel guest for the sheer array of spice and coconut-infused dishes from India and Sri Lanka as well as local delights native to the Maldives. It’s not only Indian Ocean night that is an interesting prospect for a Friday evening. The resort’s local staff also look forward to Fridays as this is their chance to entertain guests with a lively (traditionally, all male) dance and drum performance, known as bodu beru. With absolutely no knowledge of what the performance entailed, we were taken by surprise when the dancers took to the floor at The Sangs, swaying gracefully to the rhythm of local tunes. But as the evening unfolded, the beats built to an energetic finish that saw guests joining in to learn a new move or two. While bodu beru night is only a weekly occurrence at The Sangs, every evening, the resident singer and guitarist get together to fill the air with smooth jazz. After sunset, we found ourselves drawn to the venue to take in the serene ambience while sipping pre-dinner cocktails. This was also a wonderful spot to return to after dinner to wind down with soothing acoustic tunes while reclining on the venue’s beanbags and swings.

TGI Dive & Watersports Centre

During our stay, we also had the opportunity to sample the gourmet fare at the hotelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speciality restaurants. We visited Simply Veg for dinner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the ambience, with mood lighting, lent itself to an intimate dinner for two. We left with our perceptions of vegetarian cuisine completely altered. Classic dishes such as the pumpkin soup and mushroom gnocchi were presented with unique twists while unconventional combinations, think banana and bean tapas, and beet and goat cheese samosas, also featured on the menu. Just Grill, on the shores of One Banyan island, evoked a laid-back beachside barbecue experience. During our lunchtime visit, our servers recommended the catch of the day, the barracuda, and we were impressed with the simple preparation that allowed the freshness of the seafood to shine through. Although the setting at these venues leans towards fine dining, beach chic is still the order of the day, which means arriving in flip flops, or even barefoot, is not discouraged. Every evening, a newsletter arrived at our doorstep, announcing the weather forecast for the next day, the themed night and schedule of activities taking place. Having brushed up our swimming skills, we decided to embark on a guided group snorkelling trip, conducted on a complimentary basis for every guest by the TGI Dive & Watersports Centre on site. We set sail on a traditional boat, locally known as dhoni, towards the outer reefs of the atoll, where the sea bed is almost 25 metres deep and home to the most exotic marine species, making for a truly memorable experience.

The moment we stepped in, it felt like we’d traded the world’s bustle for a slice of paradise By this point, our curiosity for the underwater world reached peak levels, which is why we were thrilled to move to an overwater villa on our last day at the resort. While the glass floor panels were one of the most striking features, nothing compared to the thrill we felt of being able to dive right into the ocean from the villa’s deck. Although we intended to spend our last few hours in the water or lounging on the deck, we opted for some spa time at Elena Spa as we felt our sun-kissed skin would need a little more convincing as we reeled back into reality. Our therapists customised our treatments, incorporating movements from the traditional Balinese massage with after-sun care products for a truly energising experience. Claire Lyon As The Phantom of the Opera continues to take Dubai by storm until November 9, rising star Claire Lyon, known for her portrayal of the female lead Christine Daaé, tells us more about her favourite moments in the emirate

Dubai is unlike anywhere I’ve ever visited – and I travel a lot. I’m glad that my role in The Phantom of the Opera brought me here. I was first cast as Christine Daeé during our 2012 World Tour after understudying and performing the same character in the show’s sequel Love Never Dies. I grew up listening to and singing the music of The Phantom. So to be able to play this role for the second time in my career is such an honour. It’s an absolute dream, but it is also physically, vocally and emotionally taxing. At the same time, it is very fulfilling. I’ve portrayed the character for two and a half years that it has become my signature role and I’ve learnt so much from it – especially never to judge a book by its cover, to see the good in everyone and to always have compassion. You never know if someone is struggling in life, so it is important to always show kindness. The audience at Dubai Opera has been wonderful. We’ve had local Emirati and expat audiences as well as loyal fans from all around the world giving us standing ovations every single night. It’s such a thrill to see. This is my first time in Dubai. The emirate has been on my list for a long time and I’m loving our stay so far. Around every corner, there is something so spectacular and grand waiting to take you by surprise. The skyline is gorgeous and glittery and the restaurants and beach clubs are second to none.

Desert safari

Burj Khalifa Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque I’ve already experienced a desert safari in Dubai and I had a wonderful time. I’ve learnt so much about the practice of falconry and its links to the nation’s heritage. This is also the first time I tried camel milk and meat. The overall experience certainly evokes Dubai’s glorious past, much like the textile and spice souks we visited, which was an absolute feast for the senses. I also enjoyed spending the day at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai and The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai – such beautiful hotels with a luxurious and relaxed vibe, and of course, excellent service and food. Next on my list, I’m excited to go to the top of Burj Khalifa. It’s such a magnificent building from the outside and I can’t wait to discover its charms from within the structure. I’m also eagerly looking forward to my upcoming trip to the UAE capital. I’ve heard that Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most spectacular sights in Abu Dhabi and it’s high on my list of places to see.
