Exploring opportunities in accessible and inclusive travel

At the Future Stage yesterday, the ‘Innovations Shaping the Future of Accessible and Inclusive Travel’ session discussed how the landscape of accessible and inclusive travel is evolving rapidly, driven by both necessity and opportunity.

The session featured industry experts Jason Burnett, Senior Director Technical & Strategic Development at Intertek Cristal, and Joe Ryan, Vice President Assurance –Accessibility, HSE & Worker Welfare at Expo City Dubai. It was moderated by Dr. Inès Blal, Associate ProfessorStrategy at EHL Hospitality Business School.

Dr. Blal opened the conversation by framing accessibility and inclusion not merely as regulatory obligations but as immense opportunities for growth and positive impact. She highlighted the substantial market size of accessibilityrelated initiatives, citing estimates of a US$300 billion philanthropic market in the United States alone. Moreover, the rise of impact financing underscores a significant shift towards funding projects with ecological and social impacts.

Burnett shared insights gained from auditing thousands of hotels annually, emphasising the ongoing challenges and opportunities in enhancing accessibility. He said that despite longstanding compliance requirements, accessibility remains an underrepresented area in many hospitality establishments. He stressed the importance of building trust and

confidence among people of determination, ensuring that hotels and tour operators should not only meet regulatory standards but also exceed expectations in accessibility.

Ryan shed light on Dubai’s strong focus on accessibility and inclusion as it transitions the Expo 2020 Dubai area to Expo City Dubai. The initiative extends beyond the built environment to encompass digital accessibility and the overall guest experience across the city. He highlighted the importance of collaboration across stakeholders to achieve consistency and excellence in accessibility standards citywide.

“People of determination are very good at planning a trip because they’re looking at every single aspect and all the challenges that we take for granted. They have almost become private investigators when it comes to finding where accessible beaches and hotels are. Therefore, it is essential to have systems and technology that can be implemented together to make that whole process easier to navigate,” said Burnett.

The conversation further delved into actionable steps for short-term and long-term

improvements. Engagement with stakeholders, continuous training and leveraging technologies like virtual reality and AI emerged as key strategies. Universal design principles, including sensory rooms and quiet spaces, were highlighted as crucial elements in creating inclusive environments.

The panel also addressed the ROI of accessibility initiatives, noting that investments in universal design features not only enhance the experience for people of determination but also improve overall guest satisfaction and loyalty.

In conclusion, the dialogue underscored the ongoing journey towards accessibility as a standard rather than an exception. Collaboration, continuous improvement and a holistic approach encompassing physical, digital and social aspects of accessibility are essential for creating truly inclusive travel experiences.

As the industry evolves, innovations in technology, design and education will play pivotal roles in shaping the future of accessible and inclusive travel.

Selangor’s vibrant tourism scene to captivate ME visitors

Selangor, a powerhouse in Malaysia’s economy and a key contributor to the country’s GDP, boasts a rich tapestry of attractions spanning eco-tourism, agrotourism and cultural experiences.

Tourism Selangor is at the show this year, showcasing the diverse offerings and strategic focus of the Malaysian state’s travel industry.

In an interview, Azrul Shah Mohamad, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Selangor, highlighted some of the state’s iconic attractions, such as the Sekinchan paddy fields and the mesmerising Sky Mirror in Kuala Selangor. This unique natural phenomenon offers visitors an unforgettable, immersive experience of walking in the middle of the sea during low tide.

“The Selangor Fruit Valley, managed by the Selangor Agricultural Development Authority, also provides an immersive experience of fruit picking, adding a touch of experiential tourism to Selangor’s offerings,” he added. “Furthermore, Selangor’s cultural diversity is showcased through the Mah Meri tribe, renowned for their intricate woodcraft and traditional costumes.”

When asked about the importance of the Middle Eastern market, Mohamad emphasised the region’s potential as it has high-spending tourists who often travel with their families.

The CEO also shed light on the appeal of Selangor as a medical tourism destination, citing factors such as its affordability, availability of halal medicines and strict compliance with Sharia principles. Selangor’s healthcare facilities, such as Kumpulan Perubatan Johor (KPJ), attract a significant number of Middle Eastern tourists seeking affordable medical treatments, alongside tourism experiences.

As Selangor gears up for ‘Visit Selangor Year 2025’, Mohamad extended a warm invitation to visitors from Middle Eastern countries to explore Selangor’s cultural richness and diverse tourism offerings.

“The upcoming year promises a myriad of experiences, from cultural immersion to adventure and relaxation, making Selangor a compelling destination for global travellers seeking enriching experiences,” he concluded.

Saudi Tourism Authority partners with Riyadh Air

Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) and the kingdom’s new airline, Riyadh Air, have signed a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) at ATM. This new agreement will see the two entities working together to enhance the travel experience for passengers to and from Saudi Arabia.

Fahd Hamidaddin, Chief Executive Officer of STA, said: “Increasing Saudi’s connectivity with the world is a key pillar of our tourism strategy and will ensure we sustain our rapid growth and meet our

new ambitious target of 150 million visits by 2030. This exciting new partnership with Riyadh Air will support our goals and ensure more visitors can travel to experience the cool mountains, pristine waters and dynamic cities that make Saudi a great year-round destination.”

By the end of the decade, Riyadh Air aims to fly to over 100 countries.

“We are currently connected to over 180 destinations and are aiming to triple annual passenger traffic to 330 million by 2030 and this new

agreement will help turbocharge these efforts,” Hamidaddin added.

Diriyah Company outlines vision and progress

Diriyah Company leverages ATM as a platform to share its vision with the global travel trade and demonstrate the progress of one of the region’s fastest-growing projects. The master development for the 14 square kilometre area surrounding the 300-year-old Saudi capital is located on the outskirts of Riyadh and is already attracting an increasing number of tourists from within the kingdom and globally.

Since opening in December 2022, the diverse range of dining establishments that make up Bujairi Terrace and the historic UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif have welcomed over two million visitors.

Diriyah has forged partnerships with over 40 of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands, including The Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Address Hotels and Resorts and Capella. The very first hotel,

Bab Samhan, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is set to open this year, offering 106 standard guestrooms, 28 suites and one royal suite. These new hotels will offer over 6,500 rooms upon completion and will be strategically located across the area, further enhancing the allure of Diriyah and attracting an estimated 50 million visits annually.

Other significant elements of Diriyah that have been announced and

currently underway include The Royal Diriyah Opera House and the Arena in Diriyah that can host up to 20,000 people, offering a versatile event space that can be configured as required. Additionally, the newly introduced luxury shopping precinct – Diriyah Square – will feature over 400 global and local retail outlets and over 100 premium restaurants and cafés.

Minor Hotels’ presence at ATM this year reflects a keen understanding of market dynamics, evolving trends and a commitment to sustainability. The hospitality group boasts a portfolio of renowned hotel brands, including Anantara Hotels and Resorts.

Amir Golbarg, Senior Vice President for Middle East, Africa and India at Minor Hotels, shared some insightful perspectives on the company’s strategies and initiatives. Commenting on the UAE market, he said: “We have entered Ras Al Khaimah with Anantara Mina Al Arab, a stunning Maldivian-style property that will be a game changer for the emirate. When asked about global expansion plans, Golbarg spoke about India’s significance as a growth market. Minor Hotels’ ambitious plan to develop up to 50 hotels in India over the next decade underscores their confidence in the region’s potential. The group also recently opened offices in Bangalore and Riyadh to harness opportunities in these diverse and upcoming markets.

Central to Minor Hotels’ ethos is a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. Golbarg emphasised the group’s early adoption of sustainable practices that prioritise indigenous sustainable luxury. Their focus on reducing environmental impact, such as a significant reduction in landfill waste, reflects a forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship.

He added: “We had a 62 per cent reduction in landfill last year by putting simple measures in place.”

The shift towards experiential travel is a prominent trend and Minor Hotels is well-positioned to capitalise on it. Golbarg discussed the evolving preferences of travellers, highlighting the importance of cultural immersion and heritage experiences. This aligns with the changing narrative in the Middle East, where a renewed focus on history, culture and local experiences is reshaping the tourism landscape.

Japan continues to captivate GCC travellers

Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) returns to ATM to reinforce its presence and promote the East Asian country as a premier travel destination. This year, the Visit Japan stand features an increased number of co-exhibitors, growing from nine organisations in 2023 to 14.

As Japan gears up for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, JNTO is showcasing the country’s unique cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes and diverse experiences to the Middle Eastern market. In 2023, the number of GCC nationals visiting Japan increased to 33,212 visitors, marking a notable 401.3 per cent increase compared to 2022 figures, which also represents a robust 17.7 per cent growth compared to 2019 numbers.

With a focus on fostering stronger ties between Japan and the GCC region, JNTO aims to capitalise on the momentum generated by the strong international travel demand from the region.

Kobayashi Daisuke, Executive Director of JNTO Dubai Office, said: “We are excited to participate in ATM 2024

Additionally, Japan Airlines also launched a daily flight from Tokyo-Haneda to Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, this spring.

Expedia announces Gen-AI enabled app in the UAE

Expedia announced its global expansion strategy, with a special focus on the UAE, at ATM. Marking its foray into its first new market in eight years, Expedia announced the launch of a Gen-AI app for the UAE market at ATM. The new platform will be rolled out later this month and will offer a host of features, including price tracking capabilities and other tools to help travellers overcome barriers.

The Expedia Group, which currently operates in over 30 markets, will

offer worldwide flights and access to thousands of lodging options globally.

It aims to help citizens and residents of the UAE book the best staycations in the country and vacations globally.

“Visionary leadership, a strategic long-term plan, a business-friendly environment and a vibrant multicultural society are driving the remarkable growth in the UAE, across multiple industries, including travel and tourism,” said Rehan A. Asad, Vice President of Global Markets

at Expedia Group. “The group is an innovative technology company as much as it is a travel company and we want to grow with the UAE and with the region.”

Expedia was reportedly the first travel company to integrate ChatGPT into its app, offering a convenient source of travel inspiration. This feature will be available in the UAE to help travellers plan and make the most of their trips, along with Expedia’s price tracking tool for account holders. The tool shows price history and price predictions on future flights, based on availability, and offers alerts when prices change, so that travellers can find the best price and save time.

“We’re committed to serving UAE citizens and residents and offering them the comfort, convenience and confidence that they have a trusted partner for their family and friends to travel together. We want to provide the best product, all in one place,” Asad added.

Pickalbatros Hotels & Resorts poised for regional expansion

Pickalbatros Hotels and Resorts is catering to the increasing demand for luxury hospitality offerings with its growing portfolio. Established in 1992, the company was among the pioneers of luxury hospitality in Egypt with its first opening and has now grown to include 25 properties in its portfolio.

Located in destinations like Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh, the hotels boast stunning views of the Red Sea. Offerings include bed and breakfast packages as well as ultra all-inclusive deals. By 2025, the company has its sights set on a total of 30 hotels in its portfolio.

One of the most looked forward to aspects of the show, the winners of the Best Stand Awards at ATM 2024 have been announced. Judged by an independent panel of industry experts, the awards recognise creative design, people skills and the business-friendly appeal of the exhibition stands.

Exhibitors participating in the largest edition of ATM to date pulled out all the stops to showcase their creative and business flair. It was no easy task for the judges to decide who would take top honours.

Technology Award. Judges commended the interactive digital recreations developed by the organisation, which allow attendees to feel as though they are physically present at the planned megaproject in Saudi Arabia.

AlUla paid special attention to the reuse of materials on its stand, including the carpet selected for the space. The exhibitor integrated a series of QR codes, which enable attendees to access information about the sustainability-related reasons behind its various design choices. Charting the path to sustainable travel, leaders in the travel and tourism space are spearheading innovative initiatives for a greener future

With tourism stakeholders working tirelessly to reshape industry-wide responsible business practices, sustainability has become core to operations. The sector is constantly seeking new models, innovative solutions and insights to ensure a net-zero and nature-positive future.

PEOPLE, PLANET AND COMMUNITY

Radisson Hotel Group’s responsible business ethos revolves around three pillars: people, planet and community. The group is dedicated to achieving net-zero operations by 2050.

“We strongly believe in being a thriving, sustainable and responsible business that supports our people, communities and the planet with a focus on business ethics, supply chain sustainability, carbon footprint reduction and employability programmes to build better futures,” said Tim Cordon, Chief Operating Officer – Middle East, Africa and South East Asia Pacific at Radisson Hotel Group. “Actions such

as utilising local products, minimising waste, optimising energy and water use and engaging in community support activities are tangible examples of our commitment to these principles.”

Radisson Hotel Group’s sustainability efforts are channelled through three main areas: enhancing energy efficiency and certifications in hotel buildings, transitioning to green energy and promoting sustainable operations. For example, the group promotes responsible travel and business events by offering 100 per cent carbon-neutral meetings. Since May 2019, every meeting and event held at any Radisson hotel worldwide has been 100 per cent carbon neutral, offsetting more than 61,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide at no cost to clients. These offsets support Gold Standard or VCS projects, equivalent to removing approximately 13,300 petrol-driven cars from the road.

“During the COP28 climate conference, Radisson Hotel Group ensured that every guest staying within our 16-hotel UAE portfolio was net zero.

With the increasing emphasis on sustainable travel when choosing hotels, guests are more likely to prioritise ecofriendly practices

credits were selected from a REDD+ project in the 64,000-hectare Rimba Raya reserve in Borneo in Indonesia dedicated to preserving endangered species like the Bornean orangutan.

Cordon explained: “A noteworthy example is the towel reuse and green housekeeping programmes we offer our guests, which are linked to tangible community impact.” A portion of the savings generated through these initiatives is donated to Just a Drop, which has facilitated access to clean drinking water to over 29,500 children for life.

Founded on the principle that travel has the power to make the world a better place, Hilton reaffirms its commitment through its Travel with Purpose 2030 goals that encompass ambitious objectives to decrease carbon emissions, conserve water and reduce waste. Exemplifying the brand’s commitments is Hilton’s property portfolio in the Seychelles, each making distinct contributions to environmental conservation and community empowerment.

Yan Ping Mew, Country Director of Marketing at Hilton Seychelles, explained: “At Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa, collaborations with conservation societies have helped restore surrounding reefs through the construction of in-water nurseries in which guests are encouraged to participate.”

For instance, the resort pioneers a coral propagation programme – popular with resort guests – in collaboration with Reefscapers, which resulted in the planting of over 567 coral frames and 17 pyramids to expand reef habitats by the end of 2023.

Among other initiatives, energy conservation is addressed through the INNCOMM system, adjusting room temperatures when unoccupied. Addressing plastic waste, the resort’s water bottling plant has eliminated the need for water transportation from the mainland, saving 375,000 plastic bottles annually, while a soon-to-beimplemented Biogas plant will transform kitchen waste into fuel for cooking.

2023. Nestled within this captivating destination on a secluded private island, The St. Regis Red Sea Resort opened its doors in January 2024.

Embodying a vision of luxury hospitality in the Ummahat archipelago, the resort seamlessly integrates the brand’s innovative spirit, avant-garde design and personalised service with a pioneering approach to sustainable development.

To begin with, the entire island is powered by renewable energy, boasting LEED platinum certification – the gold standard in environmental design. The resort makes a concerted effort to create a plastic-free environment by eliminating plastic bottles and straws for guests. Its waste management programme and reduction of disposables, including the adoption of singleuse wooden products, align with the brand’s vision for reducing food waste. Additionally, the use of electric buggies and bicycles, alongside regular beach cleaning activities, underscores the resort’s dedication to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

One of the innovative ways the resort engaged guests with its environmental and sustainability efforts is by offering them the opportunity to participate in a mangrove planting activity across
