STEP INTO THE PAST

Discover the UAE’s cultural beacons for all things literature – House of Wisdom in Sharjah and Mohammed Bin Rashid Library in Dubai
A deep love of literature runs through the history of the Middle East and it is believed that storytelling as a profession originated in this part of the world. The practice can be traced back to several centuries when tribes would gather in public spaces to listen to a storyteller who would inform and entertain the crowds. Caravans traversing trade routes across the region also joined in to learn about local customs and traditions through these tales.
The region is also famous for producing the most renowned collection of stories among all. Alf Layla wa-Layla or One Thousand and One Nights spread from its Arab epicentre in the ninth century to the Middle East, North Africa and the rest of the world.
Honouring the region’s rich literary legacy, the UAE hosts a number of literature fairs annually and recently also unveiled two cultural beacons designed to promote an appreciation of the written word. In Sharjah, the House of Wisdom is a social hub for learning with a collection of over 100,000 books. Meanwhile, Dubai’s very own Mohammed Bin Rashid Library became the largest cultural centre in the region when it opened last year with more than 600,000 titles spanning 300 subjects.
HOUSE OF WISDOM
The House of Wisdom was commissioned in 2019 as part of the celebrations of Sharjah acquiring the title of UNESCO World Book Capital for the year. Commemorating this achievement, a permanent installation, The Scroll, designed by UK artist Gerry Judah stands proudly in the library’s north garden along Sharjah International Airport Road.
The library itself is two storeys high and sits amid landscaped gardens, featuring a large cantilevered roof that appears to float above the structure. Once inside, book lovers will be enticed by an ever-growing collection of physical and digital books, magazines and other resources in a variety of languages.
The House of Wisdom is designed not to resemble a traditional library but is inspired by modern architecture to serve as a retreat for the mind. Across 15 lobbies and halls, including futuristic suspended private pods for quiet reading, members can dive right into an inspiring world of literature.
The House of Wisdom also comprises a library for junior readers. The section is called The Little Reader and it houses more than 2,000 books, while the library for youth features 3,000 titles. There’s even a Book Espresso Machine which prints and binds books on demand within minutes.

MOHAMMED BIN RASHID LIBRARY
Intricately designed to resemble the shape of a rehl – the traditional wooden stand used to hold the Holy Quran – the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library champions one of Dubai’s most ambitious initiatives, which is to establish a lighthouse of knowledge, culture and creativity in the emirate. Overlooking Dubai Creek, this seven-storey structure is spread over one million square metres.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library was announced in 2016, during the UAE’s National Year of Reading. It brings to life the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The creation of this space was an important part of a series of initiatives to promote and encourage literacy and reading in society.
One of the most important objectives of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is to shine a spotlight on Arabic literature, culture and heritage. To this end, the library offers free access to both modern and rare Arabic literary works, including old texts that can only be accessed in this state-ofthe-art space.
The library is comprised of ten main sections: general, young adults, children, information, maps and atlases, media and arts, business and periodicals as well as the Emirates library and a division for special literary collections. In addition to the physical inventory, the centre provides access to an endless variety of ebooks, audiobooks and other digital media.
Since opening last year, the library has expanded its collection from 60,000 books to over one million print and e-book titles, while the number of titles and videos in its database reached more than 21 million.
While the variety is endless, the act of retrieving titles is powered by artificial intelligence, which means that once a book has been requested, a robotic vehicle locates the publication among thousands of shelves and delivers the book to the reader at the information centre within minutes.
The Treasures of the Library exhibition on the topmost level allows visitors to browse an impressive collection of rare and old books, atlases and manuscripts, some of which date back to the 13th century. The inventory includes unique copies of the Holy Quran, early print editions of literary classics, Latin translations of scholarly works from the Islamic Golden Age as well as the first edition of Atlas Maior of Blaeu by 17th-century Dutch cartographer Johannes Blaeu which was published in 1662 in 11 volumes and contains about 600 individual maps.

Explore Dubai South, the emirate’s up-and-coming neighbourhood
The neighbourhood of Dubai South embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. Announced in 2006 as Dubai World Central, this multi-phase project was renamed Dubai South in 2015 and is the emirate’s largest single urban master development focusing on aviation and logistics.
Sprawling 145 square kilometres, Dubai South encompasses eight phases which integrate residential, commercial, logistics, aviation, hospitality and leisure zones. There is a dedicated seven-square-kilometre aerospace hub, while the logistics hub covers 18 square kilometres.
At the heart of the city lies Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), which is on track to becoming the world’s largest airport when fully operational. This is complemented by multi-modal transport infrastructure connecting the world to Dubai by land, sea and air. Another neighbourhood highlight is Expo City Dubai – home of the Expo 2020 Dubai site. Completing the offering is a residential district, leisure attractions and a wide range of amenities, with many more on the way.

ATTRACTIONS ABOUND
Dubai South is home to a host of leisure venues, from Expo City Dubai to the theme parks that make up Dubai Parks and Resorts. Following the success of Expo 2020 Dubai, which welcomed a staggering 24 million visitors during its six-month run, the site has transformed into Expo City Dubai. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks from the original event, including the majestic dome of Al Wasl Plaza, which is the world’s largest 3D projection surface, and the enchanting Water Feature. The pavilions, Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, Alif – The Mobility Pavilion and the Women’s Pavilion, still host exhibitions and live events on a regular basis.
Dubai Parks and Resorts, one of the region’s largest theme park destinations, is a hub for family fun. It is home to Legoland Dubai Resort, Legoland Water Park, Motiongate Dubai, Neon Galaxy, JumpX and Riverland Dubai, which collectively offer over 100 indoor and outdoor rides.
Those seeking retail therapy will find some of the world’s best brands offering designer goods on sale at The Outlet Village. Nearby, visitors will also find
Ibn Batuta Mall and Festival Plaza, both of which promise a range of shopping experiences.
Beach lovers looking for a quieter stretch of sand on which to relax will find the lesser-known Jebel Ali Beach ideal. It’s a great spot to spend the weekend and unwind, especially during the cooler months in Dubai. Visitors with their own kits can also try activities such as kitesurfing and jet skiing.
On the other side of town, the Al Marmoom desert starts just outside of Dubai South. Making up around 10 percent of the emirate’s total area, these dunes are home to native wildlife, including oryx and gazelles, and offer a glimpse into the emirate’s past. Within the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve are the popular Al Qudra Lakes, including the famous Love Lake, which features man-made lakes formed by two interlocking hearts in the sand.
Equally popular among fitness enthusiasts is the Al Qudra Cycle Track. With 86 kilometres of track dedicated to bikers, it offers amazing views of the desert on either side, where you might also catch a glimpse of local wildlife.
COMMERCIAL HUB
The Dubai South development is envisioned as a self-sustaining city that serves as a sustainable community in which to live, work and invest. Its strategic location makes it a hub for international travellers and businesses, which is appealing to entrepreneurs and investors. The upcoming Etihad Rail network is set to further enhance connectivity, thus cementing the area’s significance.
The zone also has a fully integrated ecosystem with conveniences for both commercial and residential areas. Dubai South welcomes foreign investments, commercial buyers and entrepreneurs. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and multinational corporations (MNCs) get unparalleled benefits from investing in the neighbourhood. Upon Dubai South’s completion, the district will be home to multiple industries, that can thrive in this competent environment, following the examples of the aviation and logistics hubs it currently houses.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub is home to several districts catering to a diverse aerospace ecosystem, including education and training, maintenance, repair and overhaul. It is the region’s first aerotropolis providing airside and landside solutions. There’s also a Logistics Corridor between Al Maktoum International Airport and Jebel Ali Port Dubai, featuring a Business Park and a free zone area with flexible office spaces for businesses of any size.

The Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’ seeks to firmly establish Dubai as one of the top cities in the world to invest, live and work
16
The year 2033 will mark 200 years since the foundation of Dubai was laid by the ruling Al Maktoum family in 1833. In the two centuries that have passed, the city has risen from the desert sands to become a global economic powerhouse. Yet, the emirate is never keen to rest on its laurels.
In anticipation of the milestone, on January 4, 2023 – the 17th anniversary of the Accession Day of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai – the Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’ was announced.
Envisioned by the emirate’s exemplary leadership, this ambitious and transformative plan aims to reshape Dubai’s economic landscape and propel the emirate into a new era of sustainable growth and innovation. The overarching goal is to double the size of Dubai’s economy and cement its status among the top three global cities in which to invest, live and work. As part of this strategy, 100 new projects with economic targets of AED32 trillion will be introduced over the next decade.
Announcing the agenda, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: “2033 will mark 200 years since the foundation of Dubai: the year in which Dubai will be the most important global business centre, and by then, we would have completed the D33 Agenda. We know our economic path over the next decade. The world makes way for those who know what they want.” .
K EY PRIORITIES
At the heart of the D33 Economic Agenda is the goal of strengthening Dubai’s position as a global economic hub that offers the ideal environment for businesses to thrive. By accelerating growth through increased investment in human development, skillsets and advanced technology, and enhancing the advantages gained from Dubai’s strategic location and its advanced infrastructure, the plan hopes to raise the city’s status as a preferred destination for major international companies and investments.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed added: “The Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’ includes 100 transformative projects, with economic targets of AED32 trillion over the next 10 years, doubling our foreign trade to reach AED25.6 trillion and adding 400 cities as key trading partners over the next decade. Dubai will rank as one of the top four global financial centres with an increase in foreign direct investment to an average of AED60 billion annually over the next decade and an annual AED100 billion contribution from digital transformation. Over 300,000 global investors in Dubai today are helping build Dubai into the fastest growing global city.”
The D33 Agenda will also see a growth in government expenditures from AED512 billion
in the past decade to AED700 billion in the next decade, with increased investment in future growth sectors and further development of traditional trade and economic sectors. One of its pivotal objectives is to raise the competitiveness of the city’s thriving business sector, which will enable the increase of private sector investment from AED790 billion in the past decade to AED1 trillion by 2033.
The agenda also aims to increase the value of domestic demand for goods and services from AED2.2 trillion in the past decade to AED3 trillion in the coming decade, all in line with Dubai’s vision for enhancing its vibrant trading sector and diversified economy.
Other key priorities include raising the value of the industrial sector, promoting export growth, contributing to sustainable economic growth and achieving self-sufficiency in a number of key sectors and industries, including manufacturing.
GAINING GROUND
One of the first projects to be launched under the new strategy is the Dubai Economic Corridors 2033 initiative, which will see the emirate add 400 cities as key trade partners, thus enhancing existing foreign trade relations with Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
But it’s not just about business; the strategy puts its people first and therefore includes a programme to support the growth of 30 companies in new sectors to become global unicorns and integrate 65,000 young Emiratis into the workforce and the private sector. Similarly, the Dubai Traders Project (DT33) will empower a new generation of Dubai-based traders in various major growth sectors, thus accelerating the city’s vibrant trading hub.
Furthermore, the Dubai Unified License will provide a unique commercial identity for all companies across various economic zones, while Sandbox Dubai seeks to transform the emirate as a major hub for incubating business innovation by enabling the testing and marketing of new products and technologies.
The launch of the Dubai Project Strategy is another key component as it aims to attract the world’s best universities, as part of the broader aim of making the emirate a leading global hub for higher education.
Overall, the Dubai Economic Agenda is more than just a plan; it’s the promise of a vibrant, sustainable and innovative future that will not only benefit the emirate but have a ripple effect across the country and the globe. It’s a testament to Dubai’s unwavering commitment to progress, innovation and prosperity and its drive to offer its citizens and residents a world-class quality of life and ensure the highest levels of security and safety.
D33 OBJECTIVES

From AED14.2 trillion to AED25.6 trillion

From AED512 billion to AED700 billion

Rising to the challenge
In the quest for climate action, the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UNFCCC convened in Dubai in 2023
In a world balancing on the precipice of irreversible damage resulting from climate change, COP28 emerged as a beacon of hope. As delegates from all around the world came together to tackle the most pressing challenge of our time, Dubai pulsed with renewed energy.
The convention commenced on November 30 and ran until December 12, 2023, marking the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Expo City Dubai welcomed over 140 heads of state, senior government leaders, more than 70,000 participants and 5,000 media professionals during the two-week summit. While this global convergence saw participation from a diverse range of stakeholders – all levels of governments, youth, businesses and investors, civil society, frontline communities, indigenous peoples and others – it united everybody towards one common goal, which is safeguarding our shared home, planet Earth.
Studies from the last few decades have found that by the year 2050, our planet will have warmed 1.5°C above pre-industrial times. By the end of the century, this figure is set to increase by another halfdegree to 2°C. While it may seem like a marginal rise, it is projected to make a huge difference. If left unchecked, carbon emissions will accelerate this rate of global warming, bringing forth untoward ecological occurrences and cataclysmic weather patterns quicker than the predicted tipping point. To remain on target, science also tells us that current emission levels must be halved by 2030 and there are just seven years left to meet that goal.
To address the problem of climate change and its impacts, the UNFCCC was established in 1992 as an international body working towards a common cause. The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC serves as the central decision-making entity to find solutions to this global issue. Its primary objective is to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous human interference with the climate system.
The annual COP meetings encourage nations to find solutions to climate change. In past years, the body has played a pivotal role in shaping global climate policy. Notably, the Paris Agreement, adopted at COP21 in 2015, set ambitious targets to limit global warming and marked a significant milestone in international efforts to combat climate change. By signing this historic treaty, nations highlighted their commitment to the summit’s overarching goal of holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

A POSITIVE OUTCOME
COP28 commenced with a historic milestone as an agreement on the operationalisation of funding to address loss and damage from climate change was reached, marking the first substantive decision adopted on the conference’s opening day. A dedicated fund under UNFCCC was established, amassing commitments exceeding US$600 million. This builds on the significant COP27 decision to create a fund supporting nations and communities grappling with the impacts of climate change.
The conference closed with a groundbreaking agreement symbolising the “beginning of the end” of the fossil fuel era. Notably, this COP28 decision incorporated language on fossil fuels for the first time, with almost all countries in attendance agreeing on a statement saying that we must “transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science”.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
It was an honour for the UAE to have hosted one of the decade’s most significant climate conventions. A love for the natural environment runs deep in the country’s roots. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the nation’s Founding Father, was known for his passion for the environment. He was committed to preserving the UAE’s natural heritage, from its delicate desert ecosystems to its mangroves, oases and coasts, and initiated a host of projects, including the establishment of wildlife reserves and protected areas. His efforts played a pivotal role in shaping the UAE’s environmental policies and initiatives.
In 2015, following the Paris Agreement, the UAE became the first country in the region to announce its Net Zero by 2050 strategy. Now, almost a decade on and several initiatives later, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, declared 2023 as the ‘Year of Sustainability’ to dovetail with this historic summit.
Initiatives over the past years have included the establishment of Masdar as the world’s first carbonneutral, zero-waste city. Another notable endeavour is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the largest single-site solar park in the world based on an independent power producer model. Similarly, the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy project is at the heart of the emirate’s goal to become a zero-waste city. Finally, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant marks the nation’s foray into nuclear energy which is known for its low-carbon attributes.
Initiatives to safeguard the country’s biodiversity, especially the mangroves that act as natural carbon sinks and the endangered species found in the region, are also in place. The Oryx Reintroduction Programme is one successful example as it has seen the population of the Arabian oryx grow tremendously over the last few years. Additional grants have been made available to similar projects that contribute to the overall health of the planet. It shows that the UAE’s vision is firmly intertwined with international pursuits aimed towards positive climate action.
A love for the natural environment runs deep in the country’s roots

Cultural connection
The UAE capital’s leading cultural and leisure hub, Saadiyat Island is known for its world-class museums, stunning beaches and entertainment offering
Saadiyat Island might be home to some of the UAE capital’s finest resorts, beach clubs and golf courses, but the island is primarily known for its rich cultural offering. Spanning a mere 27 square kilometres, its marvels are mighty as its avenues for the arts perfectly mirror the local heritage.
Situated approximately 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport and seven minutes from Downtown Abu Dhabi, this natural island is perfectly placed to offer an array of unique experiences to residents and visitors. It’s the beating heart of Abu Dhabi, surrounded by a picturesque coastline with
some of the country’s only Blue Flag beaches that are also breeding grounds for Hawksbill sea turtles.
Undoubtedly, the island’s biggest highlight is Saadiyat Cultural District, which houses the world’s single largest concentration of cultural venues. With Louvre Abu Dhabi and Manarat Al Saadiyat already established, and Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi set to join the ranks soon, the district will eventually incorporate around eight museums following intensive development over the next few years.

The final frontier
Following astronaut Sultan Al Neyadis triumphant return to planet Earth after completing the longest-ever Arab space mission, we take a look at the Middle Easts space exploration efforts and the UAEs pioneering role in the industry
On March 2, 2023, UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi boarded a SpaceX Dragon capsule along with three other astronauts to embark on the longest-ever space mission in Arab history. When he returned to Earth six months later, it was after successfully clocking in 4,400 hours in space aboard the International Space Station (ISS). During his mission, Neyadi also became the first Arab spacewalker when he stepped outside his orbital outpost for seven hours. In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of astronaut Hazza Al Mansouri, who, in 2019, became the first Emirati in space with his eight-day mission to the ISS.
The two astronauts have arguably become ambassadors of the UAE’s ambitious space strategy. Their individual achievements alone have placed the country among the frontrunners of the space exploration industry. Yet, the UAE’s journey to space encompasses so much more.
SIGHTS SET ON SUCCESS
In 2017, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the National Space Programme. The strategy outlined the country’s initiatives and goals for space study, including satellite launches, Mars missions, lunar expeditions and more.
As part of the programme, a special UAE Astronaut training scheme was also introduced to
mentor Emirati youth and prepare future cosmonauts for scientific space exploration missions.
Two years later, in 2019, the National Space Strategy 2030 was announced with an aim to enhance the space sector’s contribution to the national economy and promote the UAE’s international presence in the field. This move effectively placed space exploration among the country’s top priorities for the next 50 years.
A GIANT LEAP FORWARD TO MARS
The very first Emirati spacecraft to enter space, Hope also marked the Arab world’s first mission to another planet. Known as the Emirates Mars Mission, this uncrewed expedition saw the Hope Probe launch in July 2020 and enter into orbit around Mars in February 2021.
A proud symbol of the nation’s technological innovation and expertise, the probe has greatly deepened scientific knowledge about the Red Planet with significant insight into life on Mars. Backed by a brilliant Emirati team, the probe has released 2.1 terabytes of data on the atmosphere of the Red Planet to date. Thanks to its success, the programme has been further extended for two years to gather more data on the planet’s atmosphere and to study Mars’ moon, Deimos.
Taking several giant leaps further, the UAE has also launched the Mars 2117 project, with a 100-year
Mars by the year 2117. In line with this strategy, the UAE will develop a complex of buildings called Mars Scientific City comprising laboratories for food, energy, water and agricultural testing. Each of these labs will simulate the Red Planet’s terrain and harsh environment through advanced 3D printing technology as well as heat and radiation insulation and will be inhabited by a team of scientists and astronauts for a period of one year.
Working to bring the UAE’s space programme to life is the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) and the UAE Space Agency, both of which are overseeing the ongoing astronaut missions, uncrewed expeditions and research programmes. In 2022, the UAE Space Agency announced an investment of close to US$1 billion for the space sector – The National Space Fund – to support new research projects, develop new space technology and train new talent. The fund’s first investment is in the development and launch of a constellation of advanced imaging satellites to create highly detailed and complex radar images of Earth’s land use, ice cover, surface changes and characterisation.
In May 2023, the UAE also launched a 13-yearlong project – the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt. Following six years of spacecraft development, the MBR Explorer will undertake a five-billionkilometre journey beyond Mars to explore seven asteroids in the belt over a period of seven years, ultimately landing on the last asteroid in 2034.
JOINING THE RACE
The region’s interest in space exploration is not just limited to the UAE. Earlier in 2023, the Saudi Space Commission (SSC) sent two astronauts, Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali AlQarni, to the ISS as part of Axiom Space’s AX-2 mission. The SSC also launched the US$2.1 billion Saudi Space Accelerator Program last year to enhance the country’s space industry as part of Vision 2030.
Meanwhile, Oman is building the region’s first space launch complex in the port town of Duqm. Called Etlaq, development is currently underway and will take three years to complete. A research project known as the Space Settlement Centre is also planned for Duqm, while a 10-year National Space Policy will support the country’s growing sector. Kuwait also launched its first satellite, Kuwait Sat-1, onboard the SpaceX Falcon 9, while the Egyptian Space Agency has plans to launch two satellites soon. Global space exploration efforts are believed to improve life on Earth by driving technological advancements, furthering scientific knowledge and providing economic benefits. These beliefs are mirrored across the region, with the space sector viewed as a key component to diversifying individual economies and ensuring future growth with innovation. By participating in these efforts, the Middle East is ensuring that they are not mere spectators on this journey to conquering space, but are working towards becoming pioneers in the industry.

Spirit of the union
On December 2, 2023, the UAE celebrated its 52nd National Day. In commemoration, we take a closer look at the unification journey of the seven emirates
A little over 50 years ago, in 1968, the leaders representing the seven emirates we know today met to shake hands on a simple decision that would forever alter the course of history. It was on this day that a formal agreement was reached between the rulers, binding their sheikhdoms to one another. It would take another three years until December 2, 1971, for the individual emirates to be officially recognised as the United Arab Emirates. But its roots can be traced back to a series of events that took place over a century.
Prior to the formation of the UAE, the region was characterised by a collection of sheikhdoms, each with its own ruler and governance structure. These territories included Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah. In those days, the emirates were a far cry from the wealthy cities they are today and the people lived by simple means.
A time before the discovery of oil, pearl diving, fishing and agriculture were the mainstays of the economy. Although this produced enough to live on, it meant that there was little excess for the sheikhdoms to truly prosper. And so over the course of the 19th century, the individual emirates entered into treaties with the British to provide protection and help maintain stability in the region, resulting in the creation of the Trucial States.
As pearling began to thrive, the search for oil commenced in 1930. But it didn’t bring immediate wealth to the region as the first cargo of crude oil was only exported from Abu Dhabi by 1962. Thanks to this new-found source, the sheikhdoms gradually began to flourish and served as a catalyst for unity.
During this time in Abu Dhabi, the ruling Al Nahyan family put a young Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on the throne in 1966 to carry out his vision of developing the emirate. An exemplary leader, he believed that the revenue obtained from oil would offer great opportunities to the emirate. He, therefore, channelled vast sums into the construction of schools, healthcare services, an airport, a seaport, housing, hospitals and roads, with the other emirates following suit.
The formation of the UAE brought together diverse cultures under one flag
Shortly after, in 1968, the British government announced its intention to withdraw its military presence from the Gulf by 1971. This led to questions about security and stability among the states. To address these concerns, the leaders of the emirates began discussions about forming a unified nation. His Highness Sheikh Zayed, together with His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum of Dubai, played an instrumental role in these negotiations.
Following months of discussions, on July 18, 1971, the rulers of six emirates came together in Dubai to sign the Agreement of the Union, laying the foundation for the new federation. The British treaty with the Trucial States of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah finally ended on December 1, 1971. And the very next day, on December 2, 1971, the United Arab Emirates was formed. On February 10 of the following year, Ras Al Khaimah would see the final pillar cemented, when it became the last Bedouin state to join the UAE. The union was formalised with Abu Dhabi as the capital of the new nation and Sheikh Zayed as its first president. The UAE adopted a federal system of government, with a constitution that defined the powers and responsibilities of the federal and individual emirate governments.

Surrounded by lush gardens, the museum’s architecture mimics the shape of a manuscript, inspired by the Unification Agreement. It is supported by seven pillars built into the museum as symbols of the pens that were used to sign the declaration document that formed the UAE. Through a collection of historical exhibits, it draws visitors to learn about the path that took the country from a disparate group of states, comprised of Bedouin tribes, to one of the region’s superpowers.

The growing popularity of branded residences signifies a transformative shift, where homeowners and investors seek not just brick-and-mortar properties but curated lifestyles interwoven with the prestigious essence of global brands

Luxury real estate in the UAE has witnessed a metamorphosis, driven by a demand for residences that transcend the expected. In this everevolving realm, a transformative trend has emerged, where homes are not merely built with bricks and mortar but interwoven with the essence of globally renowned luxury brands.
Here, in the UAE, DAMAC Properties has brought branded living to the emirates by partnering with luxury labels, including de GRISOGONO, Roberto Cavalli and more. The pioneers of the concept of branded residences, it is clear that this real estate trend is only set to soar, as it perfectly aligns with Dubai’s superlative tastes.
Amira Sajwani, Managing Director of Sales & Development at DAMAC Properties, charts the evolution of this trend, highlighting profound shifts in the paradigm of luxury living. “Undoubtedly, the rising demand for branded residences is reshaping the UAE market. It goes beyond a trend; it is a strategic evolution over the years on a global scale, particularly within Dubai’s dynamic real estate landscape,” she said.
Driving this transformation is the pursuit of an unparalleled lifestyle enriched by state-of-the-art amenities that branded homes promise. Furthermore, investors are recognising the long-term value that comes with the prestige of a global brand, ensuring immediate benefits and promising sustained returns.
QUALITY ASSURED
The association with time-tested and trusted partnerships is a key driver behind the growing popularity of branded residences. Sajwani noted: “Partnering with globally renowned brands is not just about maintaining momentum in demand; it is about ensuring a premium offering that transcends the ordinary. This strategic alignment elevates our projects, offering a unique blend of sophistication and prestige, attracting discerning investors and ultimately yielding superior returns.”
Buyers are drawn to branded residences as the association with a well-known brand significantly influences their decision-making process. According to Sajwani, this association instils trust and credibility, assuring buyers of a certain standard of quality and design. Beyond property ownership, it becomes a statement of status and sophistication, enhancing the perceived value of the investment. She added: “Buyers often see branded residences as not just homes but as a representation of a desirable and exclusive lifestyle, thereby influencing their decision to invest.”
HIGH-END DESIGN
Luxury brands exert a significant influence on the design aspects of residences, shaping the aesthetic of the property with distinctive elements. Sajwani highlighted the impact of each brand’s unique style, extending from architectural features to interior finishes. “This influence encompasses bespoke furnishings, high-end materials and meticulous attention to detail, creating an atmosphere of opulence and exclusivity, going far beyond everything that one looks for in the ideal home.”
Ensuring the seamless integration of the brand’s essence into the architecture and overall living experience requires a detail-oriented approach. Sajwani emphasised the importance of working closely with architects and designers to align every aspect – from exterior aesthetics to interior design – with the brand’s identity.
“It starts with their design philosophy which often shapes the aesthetic of the property, introducing distinctive and sophisticated elements that reflect the brand’s identity,” she said. “For instance, the finishing touches of Cavalli would be different from other luxury brands. Each brand infuses its unique style thus elevating the overall visual appeal of the residences.”
Moreover, luxury brands contribute to a host of lifestyle aspects by incorporating their service standards and amenities, offering concierge services, exclusive access to events and curated experiences aligned with the brand’s image.
A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
Sajwani referred to collaborations between real estate developers and luxury brands as “strategic alliances driven by a shared vision to create a distinctive market presence”. As developers seek to enhance their projects with the prestige of established luxury brands, these labels view real estate partnerships as opportunities to extend their brand identity.
“These collaborations have proven to contribute to the success of branded real estate projects by combining the developers’ expertise in infrastructure and market knowledge with the luxury brand’s reputation and design prowess. Developers provide the necessary groundwork and luxury brands add distinctive design elements and exclusive services. Hence, the resulting synergy elevates the project’s appeal, offering buyers a unique blend of architectural finesse and brand exclusivity.”

Intelligent design
Some of the best examples of the collaboration of human creativity and AI ingenuity, these structures stand as a testament to the limitless possibilities when architects embrace the potential of AI in crafting efficient, sustainable and bespoke designs
In the ever-evolving realm of architecture, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are bringing about a paradigm shift. In a field that has predominantly relied on the convergence of art and science, resulting in beautiful, functional structures, technology is heralding a new era in architectural evolution. While architects have always used technology to bring their visions to life, recent advances have revolutionised these projects, from conceptualisation to execution and even the user journey. Some of the best examples we’re seeing today are more than mere concrete and steel. With advanced integrations, these smart buildings can do it all, from enhancing daily lives to boosting energy efficiency and trimming maintenance costs.
THE EDGE
Hailed as the smartest building in the world, The Edge in Amsterdam redefines workplace dynamics by offering a life-improving intelligent system that is yet to be surpassed. Orchestrated via a smartphone app – designed by the building’s main tenant, Deloitte – it keeps employees connected from dawn to dusk by tracking their schedules and serving as a pass to the building’s facilities. For instance, the app can help workers find a parking spot and a workspace (since there are no assigned desks or offices). Based on their schedules, employees are assigned sitting desks, standing desks, work booths, meeting rooms, balcony seats or concentration rooms. Furthermore, the app knows an individual’s preferences for light and temperature, and it tweaks the environment accordingly.
According to British rating agency BREEAM, The Edge boasts the highest sustainability score ever awarded (98.4 per cent), making it the greenest building in the world. With most of its facade and roof covered with solar panels, The Edge not only uses 70 per cent less electricity than the typical office building, but it also produces more energy than it consumes.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM
No cost was spared in the development of Europe’s most technologically advanced US$1.1 billion sporting arena, with innovations stretching from the stands down to the pitch itself. The biggest highlight of this 62,062-seater stadium is its state-of-the-art retractable pitch. As it hosts both football and NFL matches – with both sports requiring different pitches – it features an innovative sliding pitch design that is a world first.
The stadium boasts an integrated network that serves as a backbone for its turnstiles, CCTV, point-of-sale systems and back-office computers. With 1,800 screens displaying zone-specific content, including locker rooms, it allows viewers to access everything from tactical briefings to safety messages. Around the ground, monitors assess activity spikes in concession stands and are used to help guide visitors around, ensuring that lines don’t get out of control. Furthermore, it’s a completely cashless environment, with some 878 contactless payment points distributed across its dining establishments, which allow customers to pay with a tap of their cards, through a mobile device or via their season tickets, which can be topped up with funds.
The contactless tech is also used for spectators to enter the ground with digital tickets, accessed via a stadium app that can be used to scan through the turnstiles. The new app also features an interactive map of the stadium and a navigation system to guide fans to their seats.
Finally, offering enhanced mobile connectivity, the stadium provides free high-density Wi-Fi and beacon technology, allowing fans to connect to 1,641 Wi-Fi access points that have the capacity for 65 per cent of the 62,000 crowd to stream live video simultaneously with no disruption.
MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE
One of the world’s most beautiful structures was also one of the most challenging architectural projects of all time. With its unique torus shape (quite unlike anything else that exists) and its calligraphy-adorned facade, technology has really been the enabler for this project. While conceptualising its design, parametric design (a process based on algorithmic thinking) and Building Information Modelling (BIM – a three-dimensional model-based technology) were used as they allowed specific design variables or parameters to be manipulated to alter the outcome of an equation.
But this was just the beginning. In the execution stage, in keeping with the museum’s ethos of innovation, its 1,024 facade panels were produced using automated robotic arms – a tribute to the very digital technology the museum stands to celebrate. Inside, AI dictates the entire visitor journey, which features simulated experiences on Earth and in outer space, designed and implemented through the use of advanced systems.
GOOGLE DEEPMIND
Google DeepMind introduced an AI-powered recommendation system to boost the energy efficiency of its already highly-optimised data centres, aiming for substantial energy savings and reduced carbon emissions. Rather than relying on human-implemented suggestions, Google’s data centres now entrust the control of cooling systems to this advanced AI, overseen by skilled operators.
Every five minutes, this groundbreaking cloud-based control system captures a snapshot of the data centre’s cooling system through thousands of sensors. It feeds this information into Google’s deep neural networks, predicting the impact of various potential actions on future energy consumption. The AI then selects actions that minimise energy usage while adhering to stringent safety constraints. These actions undergo verification by the local control system in the data centre before implementation.
Google’s data centres, powering services like Google Search, Gmail, and YouTube with thousands of servers, require reliability. To ensure the system behaves as intended, Google’s AI agents and the underlying control infrastructure employ eight different mechanisms, emphasising safety and efficiency at all times.

Exploring now
From wellness in the wild to solo retreats, here’s what the latest generation of explorers is seeking from their escapes
The ever-evolving world of travel saw one of the biggest surges this past year. With early bookings for 2024 already outpacing 2023 levels, there’s no sign of the industry slowing down. New experiences are making the landscape particularly appealing, with an array of new hotels, resorts, cruises, expeditions and more coming online with creative offerings for every type of traveller, each promising to make their journeys evermore unique.
As this elevated travel landscape continues to mature, a new breed of explorers is also taking shape, giving rise to new travel trends. Group holidays are being swapped with solo retreats; sunseekers are choosing cooler climes; and meaningful experiences are replacing the act of merely ticking off a sightseeing checklist. In the coming year and beyond, experts predict that these are the top trends set to dominate the luxury travel scene.
EXCLUSIVE ESCAPES
The post-pandemic era is ushering in a new age of travelling in style – privately. High-net-worth travellers are now seeking all things exclusive even more than they did before. They’re jetting off to destinations on private planes and yachts, choosing options where the journey is as memorable as the destination, and opting for ultraluxe stays in private villas that make the most of the locale. Think sailing through the Greek Islands or the Caribbean on a private catamaran before settling into a secluded retreat overlooking the ocean, where an acclaimed chef prepares award-winning meals.
54
THE AGE OF EXPEDITIONS
No longer the domain of rugged backpackers, adventure travel has seamlessly melded with luxury, ushering in the age of opulent expeditions. A new crop of travel companies is now seeing increasing interest in tailor-made adventure travel experiences, with each itinerary carefully designed so that no two expeditions are ever alike. On offer are bespoke adventures to remote wilderness areas such as the rainforests of South America, safaris in high-end lodges dotted across the African continent as well as luxury cruises or flights to the white continent of Antarctica that take travellers so far off the beaten path to the South Pole for the trip of a lifetime.
55 TRAVEL TRENDS | T HE WELLNESS SPACE
WELLNESS BEYOND THE SPA
Wellness experiences are now leaving the spa and heading out into nature, sometimes even into the wild. Driven by the desire to enhance one’s mental well-being and connect more with nature, wellness travel is rising in popularity. While yoga retreats in some of the world’s most exclusive destinations are becoming more accessible, other forms of wellness travel, such as forest bathing among the trees, hikes with full immersion in nature and meditative retreats among the mountains, are gaining momentum. The appeal lies in the promise of complete disconnection from the outside world – an escape of sorts from the everyday – to reset and get back on track.
56
EPICUREAN EXPERIENCES
Food has always been an essential part of travel. Promising a delicious way to experience the character and vibe of a locale, travellers are opting for destinations that are renowned for their culinary offerings. While this can range from participating in exclusive tastings or dining at the hands of renowned chefs, travellers are taking it one step further by seeking out experiential moments revolving around gastronomy. One such example is signing up for cooking lessons during the trip or visiting a local’s home to partake in a homecooked meal, both of which also offer the opportunity to immerse into the local culture.

INSPIRED BY THE SMALL SCREEN
Television shows have become more than just a form of escapism; they’ve become a source of wanderlust and travel inspiration. From documentaries that transport viewers to the farthest corners of the Earth and travel-themed reality series that showcase unique destinations and culinary delights to various sitcoms and dramas, TV has sparked a desire to explore new places in a way we’ve never experienced before. Holidays to the French capital have seen a massive rise in interest following the hit Netflix series, Emily in Paris, with viewers hoping to embark on their own real-life adventures like the titular character; while The White Lotus, with its scenic setting in Hawaii and Italy – despite its twisted storyline – has fueled the desire for ultra-luxury hotel stays.
58
KEEPING IT SUSTAINABLE
Travellers are embracing the idea that their journeys should not only be enriching for themselves but also beneficial for the planet, the destinations they visit and the people they encounter along the way. This shift towards sustainable travel reflects a growing awareness of the need to protect and preserve the world’s natural and cultural treasures for future generations. Conscious of their footprint, travellers are seeking alignment with travel businesses that create a positive impact on the destinations in which they operate. For instance, in the Maldives and Seychelles, many resorts offer coral reef restoration activities, inviting guests to learn more about the delicate marine ecosystem and do their part for their planet. Engaging in local cultural experiences is also another example, as buying from local artisans and dining at family-owned restaurants help enhance the local community.
GOING SOLO
The modern traveller seeks independence, self-discovery and empowerment, and solo travel offers all of these elements packed into one experience. It’s a way to escape the constraints of routine, to explore personal interests and connect with the world on one’s terms. Not only does solo travel offer the freedom to make spontaneous decisions, it also allows the opportunity to form meaningful connections with locals and fellow travellers, with the chance to conquer fears. In an age where self-discovery and authentic experiences are highly valued, solo travel has become a powerful means to uncover one’s true self while exploring the world at a comfortable pace. And in pursuit of the deeper meaning of life, solo travel is gaining ground.

Fusing opulence and well-being, DAMAC unveiled VOLTA in 2023, a visionary residential project where luxury intertwines with fitness, boasting cutting-edge architecture and modern design meticulously crafted to elevate residents overall health and vitality

VOLTA
Presenting a revolutionary paradigm in luxury living, DAMAC Properties has raised the curtain on a fitness-inspired residential development quite unlike anything the real estate market has witnessed before. Poised to grace Sheikh Zayed Road upon completion, VOLTA is a brand-new concept –launching in Dubai for the first time – that effortlessly merges luxury living and wellness to serve as a sanctuary for its residents.
In a move driven by the evolving demands of the current generation that is increasingly prioritising its well-being before all else, VOLTA introduces a pioneering concept that seamlessly weaves health and wellness into its design and amenities, promoting an active lifestyle for its residents.
According to DAMAC’s Senior Vice President of Development, Dr. Mohammad Baydoun, “People nowadays are more conscious about their well-being than ever before. The surge in the number of gyms alone reflects a growing societal consciousness towards wellness.”
As DAMAC positions VOLTA as a response to the rising demand for wellness-focused communities, industry experts affirm the trend. The Global Wellness Institute notes the MENA region’s wellness tourism growth at an annual rate of 13.3 per cent, more than double the global average. Moreover, lifestyle-related health concerns in the UAE and the wider GCC are prompting a shift towards healthier and more active living.
Delving into the market research that preceded the launch, Dr. Baydoun, explained: “The conventional market strategy involves replicating successful concepts. However, a discerning developer navigates the lesstravelled path to identify unmet needs. While traditional market research is challenging for nonexistent products, it illuminates gaps and potential niches. In recognising the escalating demand for wellness-focused communities without a suitable offering, we conceived VOLTA by seamlessly integrating fitness into real estate. This innovative concept evolved into an intricately designed project, boasting a coveted address and aligning with key real estate values, rendering it highly attractive to discerning investors.”
VOLTA is a brand-new concept launching in Dubai for the first time
The unveiling of VOLTA comes at an opportune time as it aligns with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, emphasising sustainable urban development with a strong focus on health, happiness and quality of life. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, the development will offer residents expansive views of Dubai’s glistening skyline and the Arabian Gulf, elevating the luxury living experience to new heights.
“The essence of VOLTA is encapsulated by three keywords: movement, change and wellness. The seamless integration of fitness resonates throughout this project, manifesting in both its exterior and interior design. The tower’s exterior epitomises sleek modernity, while its interior unfolds as a vibrant space meticulously crafted to emanate energy and positivity. Notably, the building’s dynamic shape, with the ripping running along its façade, mirrors the intricate structure of muscle fibres, adding a distinctive touch. Upon stepping inside, the bold neon pink hues in the lobby and facility areas were specifically chosen to invigorate the mind. Completing the set-up are captivating sculptures and art installations strategically placed to keep residents motivated.”
VOLTA’s amenity portfolio is a testament to DAMAC’s commitment to holistic wellness. Dr. Baydoun explained that the range of available facilities draws inspiration from traditional fitness regimens. He said: “Most fitness programmes today are usually driven by the end goal. For someone targeting muscle growth, hypotrophy training is recommended as it strategically induces microtears in muscle fibres for enhanced healing and strength. For individuals looking to build strength, they need to maximise the tension on their nervous system through increased loads. Then, there’s also callisthenics, a type of exercise that uses a person’s body weight and requires little to no equipment but can take on very advanced forms, and as you make progress, it helps the body build as much muscle as it’s designed to hold while increasing strength. These programmes are usually
complemented by a robust cardiovascular regime and VOLTA’s amenities have been designed to cover it all.”
Dr. Baydoun added: “VOLTA’s fitness facilities offer residents a seamless journey that begins right in the lobby, extending beyond the dedicated amenities level. A mountain climbing wall has been strategically positioned at the entrance to infuse adventure and fun into the fitness experience. Alternatively, residents can ascend via the stairs to reach the crown and conclude their training with a refreshing swim in either the infinity sky pool or the swimming pool.”
The facilities also include boxing arenas and outdoor callisthenics zones, ensuring residents have diverse options for maintaining an active lifestyle. Promoting active recovery is the sky yoga studio, while the poolside deck offers a uniquely relaxing lounging experience.
Going beyond physical fitness, VOLTA provides specialised services such as diet consultancy, an aqua gym, ice therapy, acupuncture, physiotherapy, aqua massages and beauty treatments. For those seeking a harmonious approach to both face and body wellness, an innovative food and beverage concept, Burgers and Botox, is also available.
“At the unit level,” highlighted Dr. Baydoun, “apartment layouts are designed to allow residents to create their own gym within the comfort of their homes. Additionally, each unit is equipped with a smart mirror, providing round-the-clock access to a virtual trainer at home. The luxury suites feature a discreetly designed wall with concealed weights and a bench, enabling them to make progress on their training programs with a comprehensive home workout.”
While VOLTA ensures 24/7 access to a personal trainer within the building, a fully-equipped emergency room with dedicated staff is also in place to intervene in case of unforeseen occurrences, prioritising the safety and well-being of its residents.
Dr. Baydoun concluded: “Every aspect of the journey has been orchestrated to empower residents in seamlessly incorporating health and wellness into their daily routines. With these thoughtfully designed amenities easily accessible, maintaining an active lifestyle becomes not only convenient but also a delightful experience. Finally, adding a touch of healthy competition, the lobby area will feature a dynamic dashboard showcasing the top calorie burners each month, fostering a community spirit of wellness and motivation.”

The Middle East’s sporting renaissance
From high-profile events to regional clubs attracting world-class players, the Middle East is strengthening its proposition

The Middle East has long been renowned for its rich history, diverse culture and economic prowess. But in recent years, it has emerged as an enticing destination for another global phenomenon – sports. With major events, such as the FIFA World Cup 2022, Formula One Grand Prix, the Ultimate Fighting Championship and more, being held in the region and iconic names like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo joining the region’s clubs, the Middle East’s sporting landscape is experiencing a renaissance that is capturing the world’s attention.
The arrival of Lionel Messi to the Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2021 sent waves throughout the football world. The Argentinian maestro, a beloved figure at FC Barcelona for over two decades, decided to venture beyond Europe and explore new horizons. The move not only showcased the Middle East’s financial muscle but also its growing influence on global sports.
Fast forward to 2022, and the sports world witnessed Cristiano Ronaldo, one of football’s greatest-ever players, leave Manchester United to join Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr FC. His decision was emblematic of the region’s growing allure. Saudi Arabia, long known for its ambition to become a sporting powerhouse, has invested heavily in developing world-class facilities and events, such as the Dakar Rally and the F1 Grand Prix.
The Middle East’s appeal to global sports icons isn’t solely about the financial returns. It’s also about the unique blend of tradition and modernity, offering these players a chance to experience a new culture and contribute to the development of sports in the region. The Middle East, after all, is home to some of the world’s
oldest traditional sporting practises – dhow sailing, falconry, camel and saluki racing and free diving, among others – that are still celebrated today.
The Middle East, particularly the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, is continuing to invest in world-class infrastructure, making it an attractive destination for athletes looking to continue their careers in an environment that matches the best in Europe or the Americas. From state-of-the-art stadiums to cutting-edge training facilities, the region offers top-tier resources for athletes to hone their skills. Furthermore, its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa ensures that global sporting icons remain within easy reach of their international fan base. The region’s burgeoning sports tourism industry is also a draw, with fans from around the world travelling to witness their favourite stars in action.
These high-profile moves have not only helped boost the Middle East’s status but have also contributed to steady growth in local talent. As aspiring athletes see their idols gracing their home turf, they’re inspired to reach for the stars themselves. Local clubs and sporting academies are also reaping the benefits of their presence, leading to a boost in talent development.
The Middle East’s sports revolution, with its ability to attract top talent, is indicative of the region’s ever-growing influence in the global sports arena. Beyond the glittering contracts and luxurious lifestyles, these changes are signalling a positive shift in the industry, spurring not just investment and development but, most importantly, passion for the game.

In the realm of homeownership, an increasingly popular choice is reshaping the real estate landscape – community living. Beyond the physical boundaries of individual homes, this lifestyle offers a tapestry of benefits that extend far beyond the front door. It’s more than shared walls; it’s a shared experience, fostering a sense of belonging, connection and a vibrant community spirit.
In response to evolving homeowner preferences, developers are shifting their focus towards building not just houses, but holistic communities. Recognising the desire for an experience that transcends the confines of traditional living spaces, developers are integrating interconnected amenities, social spaces and shared experiences. The emphasis is no longer solely on square footage; instead, it’s on fostering a sense of community, with carefully curated environments that encourage social interaction, well-being and a diverse range of lifestyle amenities.
At the forefront of this shift is DAMAC Properties, exemplifying a commitment to community-centric living through master developments such as DAMAC Hills, DAMAC Hills 2 and the eagerly anticipated DAMAC Lagoons. Mohammad Tahaineh, General Manager at DAMAC Properties, said: “Living in a community offers a myriad of lifestyle benefits that contribute to a more fulfilling life. It fosters a sense of belonging and connection among residents, creating a strong support network and a feeling of camaraderie. It often exposes individuals to a diverse range of cultures and perspectives. The availability of common amenities and services within the community eliminates the need for lengthy commutes and provides convenience and ease of access. Community events, shared recreational spaces and organised activities provide ample opportunities for social interaction, fostering a sense of community spirit. Moreover, community living promotes a healthier and more active lifestyle through access to fitness centres, parks and recreational facilities.”
ENRICHING AMENITIES
DAMAC Properties stands out in the realm of community development by not only offering a diverse array of amenities within its master developments but also by maintaining an unwavering commitment to continual improvement. What sets the property developer apart is its dedication to anticipating and meeting the evolving needs of residents. Going beyond the standard offerings found in other communities, DAMAC Properties constantly enriches the community experience by introducing new facilities and services.
Tahaineh explained: “DAMAC Properties continues its commitment to enhancing and elevating the living experience in DAMAC Hills and DAMAC Hills 2. We are constantly introducing a range of amenities and features aimed at elevating the overall lifestyle within these communities.”
The developer recently inaugurated the DAMAC Mall in DAMAC Hills, aiming to enhance residents’ connectivity and accessibility to community and retail facilities. The thoughtfully selected tenant mix, spread across this 110,000-square-foot mall, precisely corresponds to the preferences of the local community.
Within the community itself, there are numerous elements such as a fishing lake, horse stables, ice rink, skate park, pet farm, play park, sporting facilities, running and cycling tracks and the biggest highlight – the Malibu Bay pool. Moreover, the community has an International Golf Club, a hotel, restaurants, a school, clinic, nurseries, pet clinics and several other facilities for utmost convenience.
Highlighting the facilities available at DAMAC Hills 2, Tahaineh said: “We have opened up a host of amenities for residents to enjoy, including the Malibu Beach and a lazy river, bringing cool Californian coast vibes to residents’ doorsteps. In Water Town, residents can enjoy the laid-back Californian vibes of Malibu Beach. Here, there is something for everyone. Kids will love the wave pool and splash pads, while others can simply relax and float the day away in the lazy river. Other amenities include a waterpark, a bird aviary with an array of species as well as a host of fields, pitches and courts for sports enthusiasts.”
Existing amenities within DAMAC Hills 2 include an outdoor cinema, a dog park, a petting farm as well as jogging and cycling tracks. There are also tennis and basketball courts, cricket pitches and vast spaces in the central park. The community has a hotel, clinic, 24/7 emergency service, two nurseries and a community mall. Upcoming amenities will include the Pavilion Park, which forms part of the expansive central park, where children will be able to enjoy a game of outdoor snakes and ladders and chess, a spider net climbing frame, a maze and a playground.

DAMAC Properties’ latest master community, DAMAC Lagoons, is all set to redefine luxury living in Dubai. Inspired by renowned destinations around the Mediterranean, this development encompasses a series of clusters, namely Venice, Morocco, Santorini, Portofino, Costa Brava, Malta, Ibiza, Marabella and Monte Carlo, spread across 45million square feet.
“The focus at DAMAC Lagoons lies in its water-inspired aesthetic features, with over 175 square metres of water bodies.” said Tahaineh. “Residents can envision waking up to azure blue lagoons, white sandy beaches and experiencing Mediterranean vibes at their doorstep. Within minutes’ walk, amenities such as a floating cinema and waterslides are seamlessly integrated into lush, colourful landscapes, creating a harmonious and finely-tuned environment.”

As residents come together, the spirit of togetherness flourishes, fostering lasting connections among neighbours. From festive celebrations to cultural happenings, DAMAC Properties places a spotlight on the importance of communal interaction, transforming its master developments into lively hubs where residents not only reside but actively participate in a tapestry of shared moments.
“We have a four-pronged approach to engage and enhance community connections in our master developments,” said Tahaineh. “Our community management teams are very active in organising weekly community events to foster a sense of togetherness and provide entertainment opportunities for residents. We regularly collaborate with local nonprofits, government entities, local businesses and organisations to participate in our events.”
The Pink Caravan event in October promotes women’s health awareness with free check-ups. The Bridges of Giving charity initiatives extend support to those in need, both locally and internationally. In collaboration with local authorities, including RERA, Dubai Police, Civil Defense, Dubai Ambulance and Dubai Municipality, community festivals are held regularly to offer entertainment and awareness. Every March, a three-week sports festival is held with various competitions, including a duathlon and marathon, as well as a football and basketball tournament and a miniOlympics organised for children. Ramadan Tournaments span the entire Holy Month, integrating sports and well-being. The Tour De DAMAC Cyclethon, involving 500 professionals, and regular participation in the Dubai Fitness Challenge exemplify DAMAC’s dedication to fostering an active lifestyle.
Tying the entire community living experience together, resident feedback serves as the invaluable compass guiding DAMAC Properties’ community initiatives, ensuring that each event resonates with the diverse needs and aspirations of its residents, thus creating a truly inclusive and vibrant living experience.
“We maintain our commitment to nurturing interaction and community relations through various mass communication channels such as social media, periodic newsletters and a dedicated community portal called DAMAC Living. To cap it off, our communities have desginated Happiness Teams to reach out to residents and gather ideas and suggestions to improve our offerings as well as advocating for and providing insights on operational challenges in order to tackle them more efficiently.”

The past few decades have witnessed Dubai transform from a modest trading port to a global hub of innovation, luxury and architectural marvels. Mirroring this growth, the emirate’s booming real estate market is a testament to the city’s unwavering commitment to progress and its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the global market. From iconic towers that pierce the sky to opulent residential communities that redefine luxury living, Dubai’s real estate landscape is a captivating tale of vision, ambition and strategic planning, making it a prime destination for investors and homebuyers alike.
Property transactions recorded in 2023 underscore Dubai’s fierce real estate market. Ali Sajwani, Managing Director of Operations & Technology at DAMAC Properties, said: “While global real estate faces challenges like strict monetary policies and high inflation, Dubai remains resilient. The emirate’s economy, which sustained its growth momentum from last year on the back of strong trade and tourism, grew by an annual 2.8 per cent to AED111.3 billion in the first quarter, according to official data released in August. It is forecast to grow by 3.5 per cent in 2023, after expanding by 4.4 per cent last year, according to Emirates NBD. Furthermore, the Dubai Land Department stated in its latest report that the emirate recorded 116,116 new property transactions worth about AED429.6 billion in the first nine months of 2023.”
Nestled at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, Dubai’s real estate market thrives on its unparalleled accessibility. Bolstered by the emirate’s economic stability and forward-thinking policies, such as long-term visas for property investors, it emerges as a beacon for discerning shareholders, outshining regions with more restrictive immigration measures. Further sweetening the deal, Dubai’s tax-free environment stands in sharp relief against high-tax jurisdictions, offering investors more appealing returns. Coupled with the emirate’s commitment to sustainability and smart city initiatives, Dubai’s properties not only epitomise luxury living but also present strategic investments in a rapidly evolving market.
THE RISE OF BEACHFRONT LIVING
Dubai’s pristine shoreline, embracing the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf, is adorned with palm-fringed beaches, architectural marvels and upscale establishments, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to merging opulence seamlessly with natural beauty. The sweeping views across the waters and the city’s skyline create an incomparable setting, establishing a tranquil and idyllic living environment. Going beyond the visual appeal, coastal properties provide direct access to Dubai’s picturesque beaches, allowing residents to indulge in a luxurious seaside lifestyle. As such, it is little wonder that investors are increasingly drawn to homes by the beach.
Sajwani said: “To demonstrate our approach in redefining this segment of beachfront real estate, we launched DAMAC Bay which maintains a design scheme inspired by the wonders of maritime life, with an interior that includes seashells, pearls and zebrafish patterns and a sleek exterior that pays homage to serene ocean waves. Our goal was to bring the wonders of maritime bliss closer to residents than ever before. The property is constructed in a way that all residents can equally enjoy a luxurious, convenient lifestyle accented by the tranquillity of the sea. Residents will have access to a private beach, while each unit offers seaside views.”
BESPOKE LUXURY
As Dubai continues to redefine the standards of luxury living, residents are drawn to exclusive real estate concepts that do not merely serve as luxury dwellings but stand as symbols of prestige, thanks to the unmatched quality of life they promise with state-of-the-art amenities. As the market moves away from standard offerings, the demand for unique, personalised accommodations is rising as it appeals to this new generation of homeowners seeking bespoke luxury. Highend luxury residences and private villas enhance this trend, offering exclusivity and privacy – qualities increasingly sought-after by residents and hotel guests.
“DAMAC’s contributions to Dubai’s real estate market exemplify this trend,” said Sajwani. “Projects like DAMAC Maison AYKON City provide luxurious accommodation and emphasise innovative designs and comprehensive lifestyle experiences.”
This trend of uber-luxury living is set to soar in 2024 as the market is already showing dynamic growth and innovation. Sajwani commented: “Following a remarkable 89 per cent year-on-year price surge in its luxury segment in Q3 2023, Dubai has risen as a global luxury real estate leader, reflecting its growing appeal to high-net-worth individuals seeking luxury homes and investment opportunities and positioning the emirate on par with established global wealth accumulation hubs. In 2024, the real estate market is expected to continue its growth. Though likely at a slower pace; the demand for luxury properties from high-net-worth individuals should stay strong. Factors like Dubai’s status as a safe haven, its diverse ultra-high-net-worth international community and the
government’s effective pandemic response have bolstered confidence in the real estate sector.”
Sajwani also noted that there’s a shift towards customer-centric approaches in real estate, and developers should emphasise creating experiences rather than just properties by considering the end-to-end journey of buyers and tenants, ensuring that each touchpoint is tailored to their needs and preferences.”.
SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION
According to Sajwani, innovation will remain pivotal in meeting evolving expectations in real estate, with a special focus on sustainable building practices and advanced amenities as these approaches align with the lifestyle aspirations of modern affluent individuals, emphasising a holistic living experience. Dubai’s hospitality scene is also witnessing a trend of integrating technology and sustainability.
“Luxury establishments are adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance guest experiences, from AI-powered personal assistants to immersive virtual reality tours of local attractions, while concurrently, sustainability is also becoming a cornerstone, with more properties emphasising eco-friendly practices and sustainable operations, aligning with the global shift towards environmentally responsible travel.”
This is further bolstered in Dubai’s post-COP28 climate as the real estate sector is invigorated to align with the goals emphasised at the conference. “The event heightened the role of environmental leadership in the industry, pushing developers to adopt sustainable practices more rigorously, focusing on enhancing green building practices, using renewable energy and incorporating sustainable materials in project development. This shift also addresses the increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly living spaces.”
RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
Amid global economic challenges like inflation and geopolitical uncertainties, Dubai’s real estate sector stands as a model of resilience and strategic flexibility. “The industry maintains its cautiously optimistic outlook, buoyed by Dubai’s knack for turning global economic trials into opportunities,” explained Sajwani.
The emirate’s property market continues to grow robustly, supported by strategic economic policies and initiatives such as the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the legacy of Expo 2020, bolstering infrastructure and investor confidence despite a volatile global economy.
“Dubai’s real estate market demonstrates exceptional adaptability amid global economic challenges like rising interest rates and supply chain issues. It successfully navigates these challenges, using them to spur innovation and sustainable growth.”

DAMAC joins forces with Zaha Hadid Architects to bring a touch of architectural artistry to Miami
DAMAC has unveiled its latest global project — a luxurious oceanfront development poised to grace Miami’s coveted Surfside neighbourhood.
DAMAC has teamed up with the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), the award-winning British architecture and design firm founded by the late, Pritzker-prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, on this project. Set to raise new standards in design and innovation in the heart of Miami, this project, located at 8777 Collins Avenue, promises to redefine opulence and innovation in the city’s skyline. Navigating the digital landscape
In an era dominated by digital transformation, data centres are playing a pivotal role in ensuring seamless business operations
82
In the swiftly evolving digital landscape, the pivotal role of data centres in underpinning diverse industries and businesses is undeniable. Acknowledging the profound impact that data centres wield in today’s hyper-connected world, DAMAC made a groundbreaking move in 2022 by inaugurating EDGNEX in the heart of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. This state-of-the-art facility sprawls across 17,720 square metres and boasts a robust capacity of 20MW.
Not keen to rest on its laurels, the company is actively charting an ambitious course for the future. At the core of their functionality lies the provision of substantial computing power and storage resources – essential for executing sophisticated applications and managing extensive data processing operations. In an era where real-time data processing and analysis are imperative, data centres cement themselves as the heart of all operations across various industries.
Beyond the impressive computing power, data centres play a paramount role in ensuring business continuity. They provide a secure and redundant infrastructure for hosting mission-critical systems and safeguarding data. The importance of resilient infrastructure cannot be overstated in a world where downtime can instantly translate into significant losses.
Furthermore, the advent of cloud computing thrusts data centres into the limelight, transforming them into the physical foundation of cloud services. Their scalability and flexibility become linchpins for businesses navigating market changes and supporting remote workforces.
A BOOMING INDUSTRY
The data centre market is surging due to rising demand for cloud and AI, with projected revenue reaching US$438.70 billion by 2028 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.12 per cent. Innovations in cooling systems, the adoption of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient designs are being deployed to mitigate environmental impact. The integration of green technologies not only bolsters sustainable operations but aligns with global endeavours to curtail carbon footprints. In this holistic approach, data centres are not only technological powerhouses but also champions of environmentally conscious and sustainable practices.
E VOLVING BUSINESS OPERATIONS
In today’s dynamic business landscape, the strategic significance of robust IT infrastructure is paramount. Data centres play a crucial role as major corporations grapple with escalating data demands and the necessity for operational agility.
Investing in data centre services goes beyond technological upgrades; it represents a strategic move reshaping operational dynamics, cost structures and competitive advantages. Embracing state-of-the-art data centre solutions transforms how businesses store, manage and leverage data in the digital era, marking a revolutionary leap towards operational excellence, cost-effectiveness and strategic growth in a globally interconnected economy.
From a cost perspective, outsourcing to data centres reduces capital expenditure, converting it into manageable operational costs and benefiting from economies of scale. Moreover, data centres not only provide advanced facilities but also ensure high uptime and reliability, both of which are crucial for business continuity. Leveraging data centre infrastructure allows businesses to focus on core activities, fostering innovation, scalability and market adaptability, while robust security measures safeguard sensitive data in an era where data breaches carry severe consequences.
S ECURE AND SUSTAINABLE
The ever-evolving data security landscape poses common challenges, including potential vulnerabilities due to stretched cybersecurity personnel. Addressing the dual challenges of sustainability and security within data centres demands a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy.
The surge in sophisticated AI-powered cyberattacks necessitates robust defences, leading data centres to deploy advanced digital protections like encryption and multi-factor authentication, complemented by stringent physical security measures and continuous monitoring. Additionally, data centres navigate compliance complexities by aligning security measures with evolving regulations.
Sustainability is a growing concern in the sector, prompting innovations such as adopting renewable energy sources and advanced cooling technologies. Concepts like undersea or nuclear-powered data centres are explored to reduce environmental impact.
As data centres continue to play a significant role, they confront challenges by combining cutting-edge technology, stringent security protocols and pioneering environmental stewardship, ensuring sustainable support for critical business operations in the evolving digital landscape.

This provides advantages such as increased efficiency, enhanced customer experience, convenience for specific services, focused support, reduced queue congestion, priority service and operational flexibility. Additionally, dedicated meeting rooms and a coffee shop contribute to an improved waiting experience, fostering an environment supportive of better customer experiences.
A POSITIVE OUTCOME
The move has resulted in a significant increase in Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) scores. The CSAT has increased by 23 per cent since the relocation of the Happiness Centre to DAMAC Mall. The score at the end of October 2023 was 4.32 out of 5. This increase reflects the success of the initiative in improving overall customer satisfaction. Client feedback also echoes this sentiment; customers are happy with this move as it demonstrates the company’s commitment to customer service, which, in turn, builds trust. Clients also appreciate the convenience and availability of staff over the weekends, leading to increased CSAT scores and a positive overall experience.
RAISING THE BAR
In addition to these improvements, DAMAC Properties has introduced the Elite Happiness Centre, which has been operational since October 2023. This move aligns with the company’s broader vision of providing a unique and luxurious experience as well as personalised and exclusive service for its elite clientele.
The Elite Happiness Centre has been operating seven days a week in order to provide elite customers with more flexibility and convenience to connect with the team and receive outstanding support. This facility offers them unique features such as exclusive access, a dedicated team, an ultra-luxurious waiting area and valet parking.
The new address at DAMAC Mall and the introduction of several new features signify not just a relocation but a transformative experience, highlighting DAMAC’s relentless pursuit of excellence in every aspect of client engagement.

Value Proposition paves the way for innovation and growth
86
At DAMAC Properties, a commitment echoes loud and clear – people first. The intricate tapestry of the company’s Employee Value Proposition (EVP) weaves together global diversity, career empowerment, wellness initiatives and a relentless pursuit of innovation. This unique approach to nurturing a workforce that transcends traditional employment paradigms promotes a culture of continuous growth and an entrepreneurial spirit.
DAMAC Properties’ EVP orbits around four key principles. These principles encompass the company’s global outlook, provision of career paths, facilitation of employee aspirations and commitment to employee welfare. All HR practices at the company, including the introduction of new initiatives, processes, policies, systems, or tools, are aligned with these principles throughout the employee lifecycle
GLOBAL DIVERSITY, LOCAL IMPACT
DAMAC Properties stands tall as a global entity, not only in its real estate ventures but also in the rich tapestry of its workforce. The company’s employee demographics are diverse, with individuals from over 100 nationalities employed by the property developer. Moreover, the firm is agnostic to the domains from which they hire, as they recruit individuals from various industries possessing different skill sets, ranging from investment banking to core customer service. This diversity ensures a multicultural perspective that mirrors the global reach of the organisation.
BUILDING CAREERS, ENABLING ASPIRATIONS
DAMAC Properties’ commitment to career development extends beyond the traditional. The company offers careers and not just jobs. It focuses on developing and nurturing talent, providing internal tools to enable employees to enhance their job performance. Morever, the training programmes are customised for each individual within the organisation and curated with the best tools and enablement from outside sources, catering to diverse aspirations. Additionally, HR business partners are integrated into business teams, providing comprehensive support to employees for professional challenges and personal development. This integration fosters cohesion, interpersonal relationships and enhances employee engagement.
WELLNESS AT THE CORE
Employee well-being takes centre stage in DAMAC Properties’ EVP. There is a full-scale employee experience programme in place, which spans the entire employee lifecycle, addressing personal and professional achievements. For example, on Wellness Wednesdays, the team reaches out to employees by focusing on their personal well-being and mobilising the workforce through activities such as yoga sessions.
Delving further into these initiatives, DAMAC Properties works with a third-party firm that provides wellness consultants for its employees. The services offered range from counselling to health and nutrition guidance,
assisting in developing fitness goals and stress management techniques. All these services are provided free of charge to employees, ensuring that their holistic well-being is prioritised and supported.
NURTURING LOCAL TALENT
In the UAE’s dynamic landscape, DAMAC Properties strikes a balance between global expansion and nurturing local talent. Under the National Acquisition and Management Acceleration Programme (NAMA), the company focuses on integrating UAE nationals into the workforce and mentoring them to take up larger roles within the organisation.
The structured learning and development initiative within NAMA provides exposure across various verticals in the organisation, allowing nationals to explore an array of functions. Whether it’s customer experience, projects, finance, IT, legal or investments, the company provides a range of opportunities for them to find their niche. Furthermore, deployment is coupled with an overall framework to help them settle better into the organisation. This includes learning key skill sets for transitioning into corporate life, communication skills, interpersonal development, conflict resolution and negotiation.
CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT:
For DAMAC Properties, the journey doesn’t end with recruitment; it’s a continuum of learning and growth. Employees are provided with aids to help them better manage themselves, manage their individual workloads and also manage their team, based on their roles. The company curates programmes according to individual needs, ensuring that employees are equipped with the necessary skills relevant to their career stage.
A reliance on technology serves the company’s HR practices. For instance, the Sparks platform is a formal innovation forum that promotes the generation of ideas within the organisation rather than having to look outside. The platform enables employees to raise challenges and suggest improvements without the need for hierarchical approvals. It fosters a culture where every individual feels a sense of ownership and responsibility.
DAMAC Properties EVP contributes to an environment where its people flourish
CONTRIBUTING TO THE LARGER ECOSYSTEM
DAMAC Properties’ commitment beyond its organisational boundaries, means that the company always believes in giving back to society — be it the larger ecosystem or immediate communities. The company supports various global causes, such as the recent earthquakes in Turkey, encouraging both organisational contributions and employee participation for the greater good. But this begins at the local level, as the company promotes making a positive impact within their societies by urging employees to engage in community events.
In the ever-evolving professional landscape, DAMAC Properties’ EVP contributes to an environment where its people flourish, innovate and contribute to a legacy of excellence. This ensures that the company’s workforce is not just an asset but the driving force behind sustained success.
