It was a great pleasure to join Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor John Peach, when he met riders at a recent event. While I was joined by Trevor Swales, Promoter of Peterborough Speedway (pictured), the Mayor was taken for a ride around the track by international star Ben Barker, who has returned from injuries sustained in the British Final earlier this year to join Peterborough Panthers. It was a real privilege to spend an evening watching this vibrant, popular sporting event in action. The whole occasion was topped off when the Panthers won the event by a margin of 10 points 51–41, providing all three points needed to go third in the table. Once again the Riverboat Georgina hosted our annual summer networking cruise and as always it was an afternoon to be remembered for all the right reasons.

We were joined on board by the Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Robert Dryden, who we are very grateful to for being hugely supportive of the Chamber and all of our members. It was a great pleasure to introduce the mayor to two of our committee chairmen, Rosemary Green and Michael Anderson-Brown. We receive a tremendous amount of support from all our committee members and the commitment from our chairmen in particular is greatly appreciated. The riverboat trip was a great opportunity to get together in a less business-focussed environment and one that I know was enjoyed by all. Most companies understand the need to focus on delivering really great customer service, but not everyone gets it quite right. Perhaps that’s why it makes such a difference when the people you’re dealing with are positive and proactive in their approach to dealing with you.

INFLUENCE

BRIDGING THE SKILLS GAP LOCAL businesses talk about a ‘skills gap’. The gap they refer to is the difference between the skills businesses need to maintain our economic competitiveness and the skills possessed by the working population. The government has committed to delivering three million apprenticeship starts by 2020 but businesses fear that too many of these apprenticeships will be too low a level to fill the skills gap. Businesses want people with higher technician level qualifications in science, IT and engineering. Last year fewer than 20,000 people obtained a level 4 technician qualification whereas more than 250,000 people graduated from university with a bachelor’s degree. Shortage of workers with the necessary vocational qualifications is forcing employers to recruit from abroad.

Earlier this year Prof Alison Wolf, the government’s post-16 policy adviser published a report entitled, ‘Heading for the Precipice, on adult further and higher education’. She reported that British businesses need workers with high quality vocational qualifications and for every £1 invested in level 3 vocational training there is a £28 return. Despite the fact that adult skills training delivers good value for money, funding for level 3 qualifications and above is being drastically cut. Surprisingly, universities are faring better, in spite of the introduction of tuition fees, close to 50 per cent of all young people are going to university even though most graduates leave university in debt and many of them are poorly qualified for real world jobs. So what should the government do to bridge the skills gap? Prof Wolf says: “Our future productivity and prosperity are at risk if we

don’t address the ongoing erosion of provision outside the universities.” Business people understand the law of supply and demand and would expect young people to want to study subjects that lead them to interesting and well paid jobs rather than degrees that do not fit them for the workplace. However, somewhere along the line the role of education – to prepare young people to play a productive role in society – has been lost in favour of developing personal talent and discovering yourself. All very well if all children have talent, drive and ambition and want to become scientists, engineers or entrepreneurs. For the sake of the economy, business should demand that education produces young people with the skills and qualifications required to play a productive role in today’s society. A HUGE thank you to all the Chamber members who recently took the time to complete our Quarterly Economic Survey (QES). The largest and longest-running business survey in the UK, the results of the survey provide a powerful tool for representing the voice of our member businesses to government. At a national level it’s a highly influential indicator of business opinion, used as a key benchmark by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee when setting interest rates and HM Treasury and the independent Office for Budget Responsibility to shape their economic forecasts. The results of the latest survey will be released nationally on 1 October 2015, in the midst of party conference season, and of course we will share the local results with you via the Chamber website. n

OUR LOCAL Chamber committees provide a powerful voice as we continue to ensure the views and concerns of the business community are understood by key decision-makers. We currently operate six local Chamber committees, representing businesses in Cambridge and South Cambs, Ely, Fenland, Huntingdonshire, Peterborough and Stamford. They are active and vibrant groups, meeting regularly to tackle the issues facing local businesses. Representatives from all business sectors are welcome but retail and media are two sectors that are currently under-represented on several of our committees. BCC: ACCESSING FINANCE IS A BARRIER TO WOULD-BE EXPORTERS ACCESS to finance is still a barrier to exporting for UK firms, a report by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has found. In its annual International Trade Survey, the BCC found that 60 per cent of potential exporters cite general access to finance as a key factor in their plans to export goods or services. Additionally, one quarter (24 per cent) of UK businesses preparing to export have reported difficulty in accessing trade finance or credit insurance from lenders. Access to finance is an issue for firms of all sizes. Of the 60 per cent of UK

firms on the cusp of exporting who stated that securing the right funding was a key consideration in deciding if, when and where they would export to, over half (57 per cent) are micro firms, 29 per cent are small firms and 14 per cent are medium or large firms. Despite this, 90 per cent of businesses that are already exporting say further expansion is a priority, indicating that confidence in economic growth is becoming more widespread across the country and that appetite for new expansion is returning. n

BTL PROPERTY UPDATE – WEAR AND TEAR ALLOWANCE ABOLISHED FROM 6 April 2016, furnished residential property owners will no longer be able to claim wear and tear allowance on their properties which has been a useful deduction for property owners that was not based on whether any investment had been put into the property. This allowance will now be replaced with a renewals system where relief is given only when furnishings are replaced in the premises. Kevin Edwards, Tax Partner at Peterborough based accountancy firm MHA MacIntyre Hudson, commented: “Although final details have not been released (and it is unlikely we will have any finality before the Autumn Statement at the earliest) it does look likely from HMRC’s consultation that they will do away with worrying about how much or little a property needs to be furnished and instead will focus on straight relief relating to the replacement of furnishings, irrespective

of whether the property is furnished. We have been advising our clients that, if there is any intention to give a rented property a face lift with furnishings being bought, it is potentially sensible to consider deferring the expenditure until after 6 April 2016, as this will have no impact in the wear and tear relief you will be due for the year to 5 April 2016.” n

FENLAND CHAMBER NEWS A round-up of news and events from across Fenland

RED ENSIGN RAISED TO HONOUR MERCHANT NAVY THE Red Ensign was raised at Fenland Hall on Thursday 3 September to honour all the seafarers of the Merchant Navy, past and present. Fenland District Council (FDC) was one of hundreds of local authorities and other organisations marking Merchant Navy Day by flying the flag, also affectionately known as the Red Duster. About 20 people, including past members of the service, gathered at the council’s offices in March for a short ceremony hosted by FDC Chairman Councillor Carol Cox. Councillor Fred Yeulett, a master mariner who served in the Merchant Navy, told them: “Britain is a maritime nation – always has been, always will be. We depend on trade for our prosperity. “For many years the Merchant Navy flying the Red Duster carried by far the greatest proportion of goods and people by sea to and fro across the world and it is still engaged in this business. “We are gathered here today to remember the sacrifices made by merchant seamen and women in conflict and to support the Merchant Navy as it goes forward.” He recalled the losses suffered by the service in two world wars. “These were huge, with 32,000 merchant seafarers killed – a higher casualty rate than any other service. Despite these losses, seamen still went about their business.” The flag was blessed and prayers led by the Reverend Clifford Stocking, priest-incharge of St Wendreda’s Church and St John’s Church in March. Afterwards refreshments were provided in the council chamber. Since 2000 Merchant Navy Day has been commemorated on 3 September. It was on that date in 1939, the first day of the Second World War, that the SS Athenia was the first merchant ship to be torpedoed and sunk, with the loss of 128 lives. n

CWA STUDENTS LEAVE WITH MEDALS FROM WORLDSKILLS UK ELIMINATOR THREE College of West Anglia (CWA) students are celebrating after gaining bronze and silver prizes at the WorldSkills UK Eliminator at Colchester Institute in August. Emily Locks, 18, from Marshland St James, Alicja Szmyt, 18, from King’s Lynn and Daniel Freear, 19, from Wisbech, are studying diplomas in professional cookery at CWA. Emily and Alicja achieved bronze in their competitions, whilst Daniel served up silver. In total 43 chefs competed. This was narrowed down from the original 700 chefs at heats held in May. Chefs came from further and higher education colleges and universities nationwide, with a large majority studying at a level 4 or above.

Alex Harrison, Lecturer in hospitality at CWA, said: “All the students have worked really hard over the past week with planning, making, creating and continuous improvements to all of their dishes. I am very proud of their achievements.” He added: “Unfortunately they were not picked to go through to the final, however, this was still a huge success for CWA and our students are delighted with their achievements. “I’d like to thank Alison Parker (hospitality lecturer at CWA) who helped me in preparing the students for the competitions and everybody that has supported us as a team with WorldSkills this year.” n

NWES LAUNCHES CO-WORKING SPACE IN IPSWICH ENTERPRISE agency Nwes invited local businesses to the launch of their new innovative co-working space at Suffolk Enterprise Centre. Guests were able to view the new working solution and had the opportunity to network with local organisations. The guest speaker was Natalie Chaplin from Ipswich Town & Waterfront, a local independent marketing organisation which promotes everything positive that Ipswich has to offer to businesses. The event celebrated the launch of the new co-working space, which enables like-minded businesspeople to share ideas and generate unique B2B relationships in a collaborative working environment.

Strategic Director at Nwes John Balch said: “The concept of collaborative working has already been a huge success for Nwes in other areas and we’re now able to offer this service at other centres across our portfolio, including Ipswich. HUNTINGDONSHIRE REGIONAL COLLEGE’S TRAILBLAZER APPRENTICESHIPS SHINE BRIGHTLY HUNTINGDONSHIRE Regional College’s Digital Industries’ Trailblazer Apprenticeships delivery, in partnership with Firebrand Training, has hit the ground running in its first six months. Over 50 employers have engaged with the college’s partnership since the launch in February 2015 and currently 45 Trailblazer Apprentices are uploaded to the ILR with a further 35 in the pipeline. Many small and medium-sized employers are involved and others are showing an interest in this model. Digital Industries has been one of the leaders in Trailblazers and, whilst frustration is mounting at the wait for numerous Standards to be approved (as reported in FE News on 6 August 2015), this sector continues towards

meeting the Government’s ambition for 2017/18 apprenticeship starts to be Trailblazers. The Higher Level Apprenticeships, introduced by the government in 2014, focus on digital industries and are designed to make apprenticeships more attractive to employers by simplifying the system whilst making them a rigorous, world class option for people signing up to them. Susanne Stent, Principal of Huntingdonshire Regional College, said: “We are delighted to work with Firebrand, a nationally renowned company, to continue to expand our curriculum and meet regional and national skills needs with really high quality programmes.” The partnership with Firebrand is hugely

significant for Huntingdonshire Regional College as it means that they will become, to their knowledge, the first college in the region to deliver the new apprenticeship standards. Trish Wright, Head of Partnerships at the College, said: “This partnership opportunity with Firebrand Training is an exciting new area for HRC that allows us to deliver training in digital industries and will enable us to reach new employers both locally and nationally. “It is an important sector for the Local Enterprise Partnership and with the growth of the Alconbury Enterprise Zone, this will be a vital service to those employers moving into the area.” n

LUMINUS CELEBRATES SIX NEW AFFORDABLE HOMES IN ST NEOTS THESE new affordable, high quality family-sized houses for rent will provide wonderful energy efficient homes. The homes have been built as part of Luminus’ programme to develop much needed homes on former garage sites, helping to meet housing needs in Cambridgeshire. A short opening ceremony was held at Leys Road on Thursday 20 August, conducted by Luminus Executive Director (Operations), Nigel Finney. Also in attendance was the Mayor of St Neots, Councillor James Corley, Chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council Councillor Peter Bucknell, along with Councillor Doug Dew.

At the event, Nigel Finney gave a short talk about how Luminus is fulfilling its housing aspirations. SOLUTIONS FOR ACCOUNTING ARE SET TO RAISE MORE THAN £2,000 FOR CANCER SUPPORT

PEDAL POWER RAISED THOUSANDS OF POUNDS FOR MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT A TEAM from Solutions for Accounting is set to raise more than £2,000 for cancer support after completing the Great Notts Bike Ride 2015. Fourteen cyclists from the Nottingham and Cambridge offices braved the windy conditions on 21 June, with seven completing 25 miles and a further seven finishing the 50-mile route. The team from Solutions for Accounting included a range of abilities, from beginners to more experienced cyclists, with many training for up to six months to prepare for the bike ride, which was part of the Cycle Live Nottingham weekend. Macmillan Cancer Support was chosen as the beneficiary charity after a member of the Solutions for Accounting team sadly lost a close

friend to cancer last year. Sage Consultant Vanessa Watson, who completed the 50-mile race along with two friends, explained: “When my friend passed away, I wanted to do something positive and raise funds for the charity who had supported her. Then when I heard that my colleagues were going to help me to do this, I was very touched.” Solutions for Accounting’s staff, clients and family and friends gave generously through the company’s Just Giving page and the team is set to donate more than £2,000 to the charity. Managing Director of Solutions for Accounting, Iain Barker, completed the 25-mile course. He commented: “When Vanessa approached me to

ask if Solutions for Accounting would help her raise money for Macmillian Cancer Support, it was a no brainer. The charity does some amazing work to support those suffering from cancer and their families. We decided to take part in the Great Notts Bike Ride as it provides the opportunity for cyclists of all abilities to take part. The Solutions for Accounting team all did so well on the day, despite the challenging conditions, and the support and sponsorship we received from everyone involved in the company really spurred us on. “We are already planning to do the Great Notts Bike Ride next year when we hope even more members of staff will take up the challenge.” n

Ryan Pleasance and Matthew Rate spent time in a variety of departments and saw the diverse nature of their work and how they all pull together towards their common aim of reptile and amphibian conservation.

‘PUSHING THE LIMITS’ Go Glass produce a life size glass sculpture every five years which is auctioned off in aid of CLIC Sargent. This project is entitled ‘Pushing the Limits’ and would look fantastic in any company’s reception area.

GOLF DAY SECURES HOLE IN ONE FOR AIR AMBULANCE East of England based Streets Chartered Accountants hosted their fourth annual Charity Golf Day in July raising £5,290 for the Air Ambulance. The total amount fundraised will be divided between the firm’s three regional charities; East Anglian Air Ambulance, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

ASL TALKS TO POST-GCSE STUDENTS AT APPRENTICESHIPS DAY AT CRC BAR HILL based reprographics and print solutions company, Automated Systems Ltd (ASL) joined employers in the health, engineering, construction, manufacturing and catering industries at Cambridge Regional College (CRC) in August to talk to post-GCSE students about apprenticeship vacancies and careers options. The Apprenticeship Scheme provides fully-funded apprenticeship training through Cambridge Regional College. With new apprentices recruited by ASL on average of every six months, trainees have made a positive impact on the ASL workplace. The company offers a unique range of learning opportunities with their successful and ongoing apprenticeship programme. Bryan Borley, National Service Manager who attended the Apprenticeship Jobs Fair event with two ASL apprentices, said: “ASL supports the Apprenticeship Scheme as it gives individuals the opportunity to train and obtain a qualification whilst in the workplace and provides the business with the skills needed. “Not only are we recruiting apprentices to help business growth, our current apprentices are now embarking on higher level apprenticeships to develop their skills and gain further qualifications. VOLUNTEERS REWARDED AT THE ANNUAL VAN STOMP SUMMER PARTY

VAN STOMP’S summer parties are legendary… and this year was no different. Every August, Van Stomp throws a party to say thank you and farewell to the workers who take part in the annual roguing campaigns. For those not in the know, roguing is the removal from crops of undesirable plants or contaminants such as weeds or unwanted varieties. The majority of roguers are students who relish the opportunity to earn money whilst getting a tan and meeting new people.

The party had an animal theme and most of the guests joined in the spirit of it. The highlight however was Martin who came as a dreadlocked, cigarette smoking butterfly emerging from its cocoon! The food was plentiful, the music blared, the beer flowed and a good time was had by all. The die-hards partied until sunrise and had hamburgers and left over pudding for breakfast. And so, we say goodbye to this fantastic workforce until next year. n

HEWITSONS BOLSTERS CAMBRIDGE TEAM WITH PROMOTIONS LAW firm Hewitsons has shown its commitment to the development of its staff with the promotion of five members of the team to associates – including three graduates who trained within the firm on its prestigious two year placement programme. Laurence Evans, Ceri Ridell, Kelly Wardell, James Frankland and Sarah Humble have all been promoted to associates within the Cambridge office. Laurence, Ceri and Kelly have all worked with the firm since graduating from law school, each having completed the placement programme. The placement is a unique opportunity which gives trainees a taste of four different legal specialisms, based on a six month rotation period, across the various departments in the firm. ON 16 AUGUST, the Red Bull Air Race UK stop gave the wider Method team a taste of the aerial action that three of the engagement team members buckle up for regularly throughout the year. Two of the well-travelled team work directly on site at each and every race across the globe, creating and curating rich digital media content for an international audience. This content and live race reporting straight from the buzzing race airport is supported by a third team member working remotely to maintain and engage with the social community across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. On Race Day, in between the nail-biting racing

action – including the knockout Round of 14, Round of 8 and the last, epic race for the podium in the Final 4 – the rest of the Method team enjoyed a jam-packed Race Day event programme. IN BRIEF OCTOBER 2015 UNIVERSITY COLLABORATION HELPS CHARITY DEMONSTRATE ITS SUCCESS University of Hull academics from the Faculty of Education and The Faculty of Science and Engineering have come together to assist national conservation charity Froglife to demonstrate the difference its fieldwork makes. Froglife has a long and successful track record of helping children and young people gain confidence and develop a range of social skills through learning about conservation, nature and the environment. The children, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds, are often referred to the charity from schools and social services who recognise the impact that learning and playing in the outdoors can offer them. However, it is not always easy to communicate this success. Ally Dunhill, Associate Dean Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Education, said: “We are taking an inter-disciplinary approach to helping Froglife find a robust way of being able to demonstrate the positive impact their work is having on the learning and development of children and young people. We are working on new ways to collect and evaluate data as well as tracking the impact working with Froglife has on the children’s attitudes towards conservation and environmental issues over time.” Kathy Wormald, CEO of Froglife, said: “Policy makers are starting to understand the importance to people’s health and mental wellbeing of being outdoors and working with nature. As a wildlife conservation charity we want to ensure that we create more high quality green spaces for people and wildlife to enjoy. To do that it is important to be able to have tangible evidence of the value that this can bring. By working with the University of Hull we will be in a much stronger position to provide the evidence that funders, partners and other third parties are looking for.” n

SOLICITORS GET THE FESTIVAL VIBE BUCKLES Solicitors staff have been getting into Glasto-mode as part of a volunteering initiative to give young people in Cambridgeshire a ‘festival experience.’ The law firm has chosen EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) as its nominated charity for the year and has so far raised over £3,500 through a variety of individual and team initiatives. Buckles’ latest involvement saw a team visit the EACH hospice in Milton as part of the company’s ‘give a day’ policy to allow staff to spend up to one day a year volunteering for local charities. The group were asked to help set up for the charity’s ‘EACHfest’ – a mini festival for their young people aged between 11–19, all of whom

are unlikely to ever get the chance to go to a real festival. Katharine Holliday, employment solicitor who was instrumental in setting up the volunteering days, said: “It was great to meet the staff and volunteers at EACH and see the great work they do with the children and young people they support. “We all enjoyed helping to set up for their ‘EACHfest’ event and we know that the young adults will treasure their memories from such a unique day. We got the chance to see for ourselves how EACH will be putting the money we raise to good use.” n

TRULY INSPIRATIONAL – REGIONAL TRAUMA CARE PIONEER CONGRATULATED ON 15 YEARS OF LIFESAVING It’s not often you meet a man who has volunteered thousands of hours to make a vital difference at the frontline of hundreds of severe medical emergencies. MAGPAS Dr Simon Lewis has saved countless people in life-threatening situations in the East of England. He started off as volunteer doctor at Magpas and went on to play an integral part in setting the standards of patient care; by training senior doctors and paramedics from around the UK to bring the right model of treatment, as quickly as possible, to seriously ill and injured patients… and this is only the beginning of Dr Lewis’s achievements over the last 15 years! Three former patients from Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk came to meet Simon recently to say thank you and to congratulate him on his remarkable anniversary. 26 year old Chris met Magpas Dr Lewis for the first time since Chris suffered potentially fatal injuries when he

was involved in a motorbike and car collision in 2012. The impact of the incident threw Chris up in the air, landing some distance down the road, where he sustained skull, neck and pelvic fractures along with severe leg, arm and hand injuries. Magpas Dr Lewis and Paramedic Dan Cody, gave Chris the advanced care he needed there and then, before taking him to Addenbrooke’s. Chris has since made a fantastic recovery and is getting ready to go to University. Chris was joined by 64 year old Paul from Hemingford Grey. Paul is also lucky to be alive. He was on his motorbike on a cold and icy A14 when the bike veered out of control on the slip road corner at Fenstanton. Paul flew off the bike, did a double somersault and hit a fence; leaving

Thanks to the expert treatment given to him by Magpas Dr Lewis and Paramedic Simon Standen that day, Paul came out of hospital just 10 days later. Ben has also made a full recovery after his pushbike collided with a 4x4. Ben explained: “Simon and the Magpas team do an amazing job. You think these things will never happen to you, but if you’re ever in an emergency situation like I was, you’ll feel extremely lucky to have Magpas around to save you and get you back to a normal life again.” n

We ask Carly what the ‘so what’ is for businesses on environmental issues. PETERBOROUGH Environment City Trust (PECT) is an independent and innovative environmental charity helping to create a cleaner, greener, and healthier city of Peterborough and beyond. With more than 21 years’ experience, PECT delivers ground-breaking and innovative projects of local, regional and national significance, enabling change toward a more sustainable future. PECT works with a multitude of communities, schools, businesses, local authorities and voluntary organisations to deliver everything from city-wide tree planting, national business support, eco education, fuel poverty programmes and healthy eating projects to meet its charitable aims. So, what does this have to do with businesses and why should they be interested? “Not everyone wants to hear about the big environmental and social issues we face such as climate change, resource scarcity and inequality. These issues can switch people off or, even for those that are engaged, it can be too much to comprehend about how we can make in-roads into these complex matters. However, I think they always need to be part of the discussion otherwise ambitions around what can be done start from too narrow a standpoint. Globally and nationally our current rate of resource use is unsustainable. Couple this with the changing climate and we face a challenging context in which to thrive and plan for the future. However, we do have an opportunity to act upon this knowledge and, I think, a responsibility to do so.

“This isn’t about a choice between being responsible or being profitable. For businesses, there are many benefits both in the here and now and in the long term for understanding and managing their impact and considering what the future will be like and positioning their business accordingly. In the immediate term, this is about looking at the resources used within your operation and becoming more efficient and effective. Regarding long term planning, I am often reminded of a talk I heard from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager of a well known smoothie company about 10 years ago. Her talk described their understanding of projected water availability pressures in the countries where their fruit was grown. This,

It will come as no surprise that this foresight was well placed. “At PECT, one way in which we are improving the environmental credentials of businesses is through our national not-for-profit accreditation scheme Investors in the Environment (iiE). iiE was launched because we knew there was a

gap in the market to provide support to businesses that were interested, but didn’t want to take up international standards on environmental management. “iiE works with hundreds of businesses across the UK, offering a fantastic hub of environmental services. We have the three-level certification side of the scheme for those businesses that want to be able to demonstrate their responsibility to others. The membership side of the scheme offers support to implement a credible Environmental Management System (EMS). Lastly, the promotional element that publicises best practice from our members. Examples are IKEA Distribution and Queensgate Shopping Centre going Zero Waste to landfill, or Shield Technologies becoming paperless with their internal systems. “The scheme is designed to create more sustainable and smarter businesses of the future. The businesses have access to tailored and continued support and expert advice. Ultimately we want to empower the businesses from the inside, and we work with staff and green champions to create real yet realistic change in the workplace. “As consumers become more informed they demand more responsibility from businesses. iiE is one way in which PECT is helping businesses to demonstrate their green credentials whilst also receiving all the benefits of the scheme to help them become more sustainable, in all senses of the word.” n

The Economy in China IT TAKES 30 patient years of practice and training before a Japanese puppeteer is allowed to operate the head of a Bunraku character. Some of that is fairly laid at the feet of ‘restrictive practices’, but you may still be wondering why I should know about Japanese puppet theatre, and what it has to do with the economic crisis in China, which is my focus for this month. It is relevant, but let me set it to one side in a few words. First, in my youth I was a puppeteer who represented Great Britain internationally in a modest way. Secondly, Bunraku has two, 38

rather conflicting, resonances with China – the potential re-emergence of militarisation in Tokyo, on the one hand (which is not directly relevant here); and on the other China’s struggle to cope with economic wobbles. In the context of global capitalism China is an unruly teenager with an autocratic but indulgent parent.

Leaving behind the puppet theatre analogy – even though it still holds good in terms of corporate governance – we are left with a régime that would exploit the ‘benefits’ of capitalism but hasn’t a clue about how to cope with the pearshaped downsides, even after the best part of 30 years of trying to come to terms with it. (That said, the West is still struggling after 300 years.)

What people still seem unsure about is whether capitalism is supposed to be a financial system that underpins an ordered and peaceful world or is just a get-rich-quick roulette wheel. It tries to be both, as we have recently witnessed in China, and as saw in the West seven years ago. And it fails to be either. So should we be worried about what has been happening to share prices in the Chinese economy? Well, yes. And, er, no. We need not concern ourselves overmuch about volatility in stock prices in an immature and largely dirigiste economy. Nor should we worry unduly about the Chinese government’s rather eccentric reaction to the crash – or ‘adjustment’, as politicians prefer. For them these are uncharted waters, and markets are notoriously capricious. The Chinese economy may be one of the biggest in the world, but it is very largely isolated from the rest of the world, for all that the country’s leaders might wish otherwise. It is underpinned by property and manufacturing, and its stock market is small in global terms. It is not yet a big player in global commerce, even if we are using its cash surpluses to finance politicians’ vanity projects such as HS2 and nuclear power generation – of both of which I am an unashamed, but realistic, fan.

One fallout from China might be welcomed by many Cambridgeshire businesses: interest rates are likely to remain on hold What should really be worrying us is not whether Chinese GDP is growing at seven per cent rather than 10 per cent – we should be so worried! - but that such consolidation should create such turmoil in world markets. As a response to the behaviour of the adolescent market in Shanghai, nearly £75bn was ‘wiped off’ the value of FTSE100 companies in a single day. Really? Were their assets and activities actually any less valuable? No, they weren’t, but a lot of gamblers were richer and a lot of investors poorer. The idea of capitalism is that sound business prospers – the German ‘patient capital’ model – not that reckless gambling and human exploitation make fortunes for spivs (the US/Anglo-Saxon model). The Cambridge economist John Maynard Keynes said: “I think that capitalism, wisely managed, can probably be made more efficient

for attaining economic ends than any alternative system yet in sight but that in itself it is in many ways extremely objectionable.” Prophetic words now nearly a century old. So what we should worry about is that we in the West have allowed our economic fortunes to become dominated not be what we do and how we should value that activity so much as by what people are prepared to bet on. At the time of writing the Chinese economy has rightly given way on the news agenda to the plight of refugees – a more compelling problem, and one that is actually real, even though spivs and profiteers have exacerbated this one too. In the meantime, one fallout from China might be welcomed by many Cambridgeshire businesses: interest rates are likely to remain on hold for rather longer than Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England, had been predicting. Beyond that, who knows? While your Bunraku puppeteer is as predictable as an atomic clock, the Chinese economy probably owes more to the cuckoo clock. The country manufactures millions of them, too! n

ASK THE EXPERT This month’s Ask the Expert focuses on becoming more effective at selling. Caroline Robinson runs Sandler Training in Cambridge. Here she answers some of the most common sales questions raised by business owners.

HOW CAN I OR MY PEOPLE GET MORE EFFECTIVE AT SELLING? Start by working out what are the underlying issues. There could be many reasons why you are not being as effective as you would like. At the individual level it could come down to having the wrong attitude (rude to talk about money, not feeling peer to peer with prospects), or not doing the right behaviours (lacking a weekly/daily action plan), or not having the right skill level (don’t know how to have effective budget discussions, struggle to control the sales process). At the company level it could be issues with the sales strategy (does the company have the right strategy in place to achieve the sales targets), structure (are there effective processes in place that everyone follows), staff (have you got the right people in the sales and management roles) or skills (having the right skills to handle sales situations). Most often it’s a combination of more than one of these areas. Once you have worked out the underlying causes it is then easier to pinpoint what solutions would be required to fix the real problem.

HOW DO I GET IN FRONT OF MORE OF THE RIGHT TYPE OF PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS?

Consistency is key. First identify who are the right prospective clients and what are the most effective activities to get in front of them, then become really consistent about prospecting on a daily or at least weekly basis; week in week out. Also use small touches that get you in front of your prospects on a regular basis – not stalking, more building trust and awareness. As a general rule of thumb maintain this for at least 18 months – most companies and people stop too early. Remember they might not have a need now but a lot can happen in 18 months that changes their needs and priorities. If you are reaching them consistently they are more likely to remember you and get in touch or respond when you next contact them.

BECAUSE I RUN MY OWN BUSINESS I NOW HAVE A SELLING ROLE, BUT DON’T CONSIDER MYSELF A NATURAL SALES PERSON. HOW CAN I GET MORE COMFORTABLE IN A SELLING ROLE?

Sales often has a negative perception associated with it. Avoid this by establishing yourself as a trusted advisor, meaning that you are focused on the prospect and working out together whether

there is a fit between what they are looking for (if anything) and what you do. There may not be and that is okay, you are not going to be right for everyone. Use your expertise to ask really good insightful questions that get your prospect thinking and build your credibility without having to start with a show and tell of how great you and your company are. Prospects are far more interested in themselves than they are in you. I STRUGGLE TO HIRE SALES PEOPLE WHO CAN AND DO SELLING CONSISTENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY? Two elements to this – more effective hiring and more effective management. Take your time to hire the right people who really can do the job, not just interview well. Working this out through interviewing only is often unreliable; use profiling to give you more objective evidence on how effectively that person will perform in your specific type of sales e.g. how effectively can they control a sales process and move it to a conclusion, how much do they accept personal responsibility for their success, how willing and effective will they be at prospecting? Also are you managing your sales people optimally or are you/your sales manger part of the problem? Look at your induction process, how you hold your people accountable, how you build their skill level, how you motivate them.
