EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to another month and another issue. In September last year around 10 new schools opened in Dubai and around another 10 are scheduled to open this coming September - that takes the number of schools in Dubai to over 200. What does that mean for parents and their children? This month we have spoken to some education experts and prepared a bit of a round up of what this growth in school places could mean, and the opportunities and the benefits they could bring. Take a look on pages 42 to 47. One thing we love here at Connector is celebrating a birthday, whether it’s for our friends, family or someone in the lovely Connector team. We now want to celebrate that with our readers and their children and have collected a handful of our readers little people who are all celebrating birthdays this month - see who they are and what funny things they said on page 49. Is your child having a birthday in May, let us know and you never know, they could win a birthday present next month. Did you know chocolate, potatoes and tomatoes all originated from South America? Neither did we, but we had fun finding that out as well as finding out some of the best South American dining options around Dubai. From established places like Bar Loca to new openings Fogo De Chao and Luchador, check out our round up on pages 24 to 27. Hope you enjoy the issue and if you have something to say, let us know.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Send your letters to editorial@connector-dubai.com. we'd love to hear from you! As an American seeing a recipe from David Myers excited me so I had to try. It was surprising how straight forward it was to prepare and I must have done a good job as my husband wanted me to prepare it again. Samantha

I first went to La Mer last year and didn’t realise how much more there is there now until I read your piece in the March issue, and I went again. It its a great spot for the whole family and I am sure we will be regulars. Jamal

We moved to JLT towards the end of last year and I was very happy to see that I could pick up a copy of Connector every month from a stand in our building. I now make a point of going to the stand at the beginning of the month to make sure I don’t miss an issue. Anamita

Your newsletters just started landing in my email folder, which I enjoy receiving. They give me just the right amount of news and information I need to know what is relevant to me. Fahad

Kiwi is an exotic fruit that originated in China, with a fuzzy outer skin and juicy flesh. Rich in trace elements, minerals and vitamins, the kiwi quickly conquered the global market with its unique, exceptional sweet and sour taste!

Why introduce kiwi into our daily diet?

How to enjoy kiwis

It is rich in vitamin C. Consumption of a single kiwifruit can cover the human organism’s daily requirement in this vitamin. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, E and B complex, and it contains potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

There are several different ways to incorporate kiwis into your daily diet: • Serve your friends a refreshing fruit drink made with kiwi and melon. • Make delicious and healthy kiwi-based smoothies. • Enrich your breakfast by adding freshly cut slices of kiwi to yoghurt or to your cereal. • Enjoy chocolate kiwis! Cut the kiwis in slices and dip them in melted chocolate. The taste is a revelation! • Simply add kiwi to your favourite green salad.

European kiwis conquer the global market! European kiwi stands out for its quality, both in taste and in nutritional value, because it is harvested by hand. Kiwis are placed in suitable refrigerated storage areas within 24 hours from harvesting, thus guaranteeing that all of the fruit’s nutrients are preserved. European kiwis stand out and are sought after in many international markets, and are exported to over 51 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

www.hellokiwi.eu

So let your imagination run free and pleasantly surprise your friends and family, by using kiwi in various recipes. The results will amaze you!

THE REVIEW

Shimmers at Madinat Jumeirah

I magine sat at a table on a decked terrace in an open air restaurant, with a a sandy beach just in front of you, Greek music playing and the only interruption is the sound of waves crashing against the shoreline. You could be forgiven for thinking you were on any one of the Greek islands were it not for the iconic Burj Al Arab on the one side and the lit up skyline of Palm Jumeirah on the other. Some restaurants have this magical ability to transport you to another continent, and Shimmers at Jumeirah Mina A’Salam does just that. Shimmers was always known as a popular Mediterranean beach restaurant with great snacks and an awesome place to watch the sun set. The setting is still the same, but Shimmers is now a full on Greek restaurant. The menu is traditionally Greek, with a selection of starters you would expect, and mains that remind you of any holiday you would have had in Mykonos or Crete. With nine starters to choose from, we opted to do what Greeks do and order a selection to create our own mini meze, after all Greek food is all about sharing. The choices of saganaki, seared prawns, www.connector.ae

octopus and soutzoukakia were a meal in themselves. All four were perfectly prepared and the stand out were the saganaki with it’s tasty cheese filling accompanied by the sweetness of the fig marmalade, and the meaty soutzoukaki with an amazing creamy tomato and yoghurt sauce. For mains we opted for something from the grill and something from the casserole. The paidakia (lamb chops) were tender and came out exactly as ordered and the taste of the accompanying potatoes where perfectly enhanced with the crumbled feta. The bekri meze (drunken meat stew) contained a generous portion of tender beef cubes in a slightly spicy stew. After a Greek meal of generous portions it is close to impossible to add desserts, but you cannot leave without at least sharing a portion of loukoumades. A signature dish of Shimmers, the dough balls were crispy on the outside with a drizzle of honey and a sprinkling of walnuts, and helped maintain the feeling of being somewhere on the Aegean. For a 3 course meal, without drinks, expect to pay somewhere around Dhs 300 per person. For reservations call 04-4323232. CONNECTOR APRIL 35

He was then given the opportunity to work in a well-known chain of hotels & restaurants, where he improved his skills by working alongside many experienced chefs who taught him numerous techniques, methods and recipes. 36 APRIL CONNECTOR

7-8 rounds galangal, thinly sliced. Thai chilies, to taste, bruised and cut into large pieces 3-4 tbsp Thai chili paste ½ cup lime juice 3 tbsp fish sauce 3 cups straw mushroom, cut or tear large ones into bite-sized pieces Cilantro for garnish Instructions Add the stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal and chilies to the pot. Bring to a boil and let it boil for 3-4 minutes until you can smell the fragrance of the herbs from the pot. When the soup is done simmering, add the straw mushrooms, and bring the soup back to a boil. Once the soup comes back to a boil, add the shrimp and when the soup just starts to bubble again, turn off the heat. KIDS & EDUCATION

Entry of new schools

in Dubai market

T he school and education landscape in the UAE is changing at a dynamic rate, more schools opened in 2017 and more are scheduled to open in 2018. For families and parents, these changes are good. More schools means more places; more places means more competition: more competition means maintaining and even improving the standard of education their children will receive. We bring you an overview of these new developments in the education sector and their influence on parents’ choices. We have listed down the opportunities and changes new schools would bring along with comments from industry experts.

of schools per area providing parents a perfect opportunity to choose a school near to home. Mrs. Jane Whitby Founding Principal of Newlands School said, “More schools will mean a greater choice of schools per area which will equal less travelling time for children as it is not fair for them to spend so long on school buses and in cars." Patrick Lee - Browne, Principal of Kent College Dubai said, “Travel time to and from school is increasingly an issue for families and a proportion of schools are being built in the new residential areas, which will help keep that time to a minimum."

More schools per area As the number of Dubai schools soars high, it will improve the ratio of number

Relief from long-waiting lists When there were few schools in Dubai, parents went through the hardship of

KIDS & EDUCATION letting go of their favourite school because of a long waiting list. More schools in Dubai would definitely be a relief for parents as more schools means, short or no waiting lists. Clive Pierrepont, Director of Communications at Taaleem said, “Wait lists have all but disappeared. In the past when school places were in short supply, through desperation parents felt pressured to secure the first place offered to them. Now parents can be a little more relaxed about the timeframe needed to make an informed decision and will still have a wide choice of options even if they arrive late into the admissions game." Encourage healthy competition The continuous growth in education sector will induce a healthy competition in the sector, hence improving the overall standard of education. To come across as the best school in Dubai, the existing schools are focusing on making their achievements visible to parents whereas the new schools are vouching for their unique and well thought out selling points. Clive Pierrepont of Taaleem said, “In our newest school in Jumeirah Park, Dubai British School, we worked with a Michelin Starred Chef, Gary Rhodes to create a dining experience unique to Dubai that included healthy formal meals with an emphasis on great manners and social etiquette. We also established a www.connector.ae

school radio station which was used to launch the school, established a direct link with Barcelona Football Academy for our soccer school and established a partnership with the Dubai Performing Arts Academy available to the whole of the community." Alan Williamson, Director of Education at Kings' Schools said, “With increased competition in Dubai, the opening of new facilities motivate existing schools to be at the top of their game. Schools, established or new, need to be able to demonstrate that they offer an education environment where children feel they belong, and this has to be played out every single day from the director of education to the cleaning staff. At Kings’, our state-of-the-art sports facilities, for example, may be the icing on the cake for some parents but, ultimately, every school has to feel well-rounded." Head of Secondary School, Luke Osborne at the Swiss International Scientific School said, "In an everchanging world and at a time where the Fourth Industrial Revolution is changing the nature of profiles required in the labour market, it became important for schools to teach students creative and critical thinking and make sure they develop their cognitive abilities, to ensure they receive ‘future proof’ skills in the global competitive market." CONNECTOR APRIL 43

KIDS & EDUCATION New and Modern facilities As with everyting, new things are often more fresh, innovative and equipped with modern facilities. The newness in the schools would surely please children and parents as they start to look at these new schools. Alan Williamson of Kings' Schools added, "A lot of new schools also offer incredible facilities. Here at Kings’ School Al Barsha, we have a black box theatre, three swimming pools and a fantastic auditorium for expressive arts, among other things." Johnathan Maxwell Letcher, School Principal at Amercian School of Creative Science (ASCS) Al Barsha said, “The competitive school landscape also drives quality, attracts great international talent and pushes schools to be innovative in the way they are nurturing our future generations." Impact on fees Fees is an important deciding factor when choosing a school. With new schools bringing more competition, the fee scale becomes a crucial factor to survive in the market. While parents may experience a positive change in fees as they go down, some schools will be charging higher fees vouching for their state-of-art facilities and educational standards significantly above others. Head of Marketing, Caterina Perlini at Swiss International School Dubai said, www.connector.ae

“It is difficult to predict since the market is currently witnessing a number of fee reductions in schools across Dubai. At the same time though, several new schools are opening and displaying the highest fees in the city." A spokesperson for GEMS said, “We have been tackling the cost of living issue for parents, including school fees, through several initiatives designed to lessen the impact on pockets. This academic year we launched the GEMS Rewards Programme in 2017 with the aspiration to allow families to save towards their school fees." Student: Teacher ratio The students per classroom is expected to remain same as the schools, established or new, need to adhere the students per classroom guidelines. As per education experts, there’ should not be much change on this front. Clive Pierrepont of Taaleem said, “ Most schools state in their admissions policy, the maximum number of students per class. It is a myth that the smaller the class size the better the educational experience is. The quality of education never exceeds the quality of the class teacher; therefore, class size should not be of prime consideration in parents’ choice.” Johnathan Maxwell Letcher of ASCS Al Barsha said, “ The focus for us at ASCS Al Barsha, like any school, is to provide the CONNECTOR APRIL 45

KIDS & EDUCATION ultimate learning environment for future generations. The size of the school class is a regulatory requirement which we adhere to.” The education sector is blossoming in Dubai bringing many stated benefits with it. However, the education experts are of the opinion that the addition of new schools should not bring much change in the school selection criteria besides the fact that parents will now have more schools to choose from. So, what should you really be looking for when you are given so many new options as well existing schools. Asking write questions Mrs. Jane Whitby of Newlands School said, “Parents should make sure they are not misled by schools saying they follow a particular curriculum as this does not ensure high academic levels but to ask questions about how a school can help their child specifically to achieve his or her best. Parents need to ask many questions and to not be misled in the belief that high fees will mean their child will get a good education." A spokesperson at GEMS said, "There are a broad range of factors to consider when choosing the right school for your children. These include location, school culture and values, type of curriculum, teaching practices - the use of innovation & technology, extra-curricular activities and development programmes, credibility of school operator and budgets." 46 APRIL CONNECTOR

Holistic approach to education Luke Osborne, of the Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai said, “The focus on wellbeing aligns with the aims of those schools who, like us, take a holistic and pastoral approach to education. You cannot separate emotional balance from long-term academic and career success. We understand that school-leavers flourish when they are ready to contribute to wider society in a meaningful way - certainly, study and work form a key part of this mix but true wellbeing also stems from a feeling of belonging to - and service to - one’s various communities.” Modern education style Johnathan Maxwell Letcher at ASCS Al Barsha said, “With the advantage of choice, parents have the option to consider a school that has the most suited academic and environment that will allow their children to thrive with likeminded students. Moreover, parents should seek a school that provides a 21st century education where adaptation, student ownership, and grit are grounded with a moral compass focused on social awareness and responsibility." Visiting schools personally Clive Pierrepont of Taaleem said, “Items to research may include, reputation, curriculum, inspection reports, exam results, #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION the destination of graduating students, international benchmarking comparisons, staff turnover, a search of social media and school fees. However, there is no substitute for actually visiting the school and getting a feel for the establishment and more importantly the people that run it. It is always good to try and visit at drop off and pick up times and ask parents at the school to share their views on the positives and negatives of that particular school. They will find that parents are quite candid and

forthright in their views, but they must try to canvas as many of them as they can." Track record of investor in a new school Patrick Lee - Browne, Principal at Kent College Dubai said, "The track record of the school’s investors and their level of involvement in the new school can be important, along with any particular distinguishing features of the school such as the curriculum offered."

Happy birthday to them all! Alona Nishant 5 years old on 26th April Student at Our Own English High School Funny moment We were watching our wedding video. and my daughter after a while started to ask us "Why I am not there?" and we told her you were not born. She suddenly started complaining that we cheated her by sending her to school and didn't allow her to come, and told us she was unhappy with us both, will complain to Grandma, and will not go to dance school.

Morgan Lloyd Taylor 6 years old on 24th April GEMS Royal Dubai Funny moment My son at Christmas last year asked for a candle. When I asked what the candle should smell of, he replied “sausages.

Greg Petridis 11 years old on 19th April Student at Sunmarke School Funny moment He's noticed a lot of fancy watches since we moved to Dubai and turned around and said to me "nobody buys a Rolex just to tell time".

Top tips for

oral hygiene Smile wide and bright

Y our perfect smile is a gateway to your overall well-being. Yes, we are not exaggerating. You may not realise, but your oral hygiene is as important as your general well-being. While you may think, your teeth are strong enough not to need any extra care, you never know if they are going through a slow decaying process and nasty plaques and cavities are accumulating in your mouth which may need long and painful removal procedures later. As an old adage goes, precaution is always better than cure. Dr. Joy Clinic said, “This is a common myth that gum disease is all too common. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that 47% of adults aged 30 and older have some form 52 APRIL CONNECTOR

of gum disease. Also, as we age, we're naturally more susceptible to infections, including those in the gums, 64% of adults aged 65 and older have either moderate or severe gum disease." Hence, we bring you a few simple tips helpful in maintaining mouth hygiene and would also help you have real strong teeth now and forever. Brush your mouth The first and the foremost principal says the oral hygiene is not only about white and bright teeth; but you also got to take care of your gums, tongue, and the roof of mouth. We advise you to brush your mouth and not teeth alone. #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING It is advisable to brush twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Wondering why? The morning routine will remove plaque and bacteria accumulated over night. Brushing your teeth before you go to bed prevents accumulation of plaque, tooth decay and gum disease. Choose the right toothbrush • An ideal toothbrush’s bristles should be very soft and the head of the toothbrush should be small. • Make sure that you replace your tiny tool every three to four months or sooner, if the bristles are frayed. Brushing technique • Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle against your gums • Brush your teeth back and forth gently in short strokes • Start with brushing outer surfaces of tooth followed by inner tooth surface and chewing surface in the end. • Use the tip of the brush and stroke gently up and down. Floss once everyday Do not ignore those narrow spaces between your teeth. These are the places where food residuals find their home leading to dental issues. If you care about your dental hygiene, floss your teeth once a day. You should floss before you brush to remove any plaque from these areas. www.connector.ae

Flossing technique • Hold floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers and guide it between your teeth using a gentle sliding action. • When the floss reaches where the tooth meets the gum, curve it into a V shape against the tooth and gently slide it up and down between the gum and the tooth. • Repeat for the other side and every tooth. Watch what you eat Your dental health cycle, good or bad, starts the moment you decide to eat or drink anything. Therefore, it becomes necessary that you know which are good and bad foods for your mouth. Mouth-friendly foods and drinks Cheese, chicken, nuts and milk, these foods are considered to be the best friends of your teeth and overall mouth hygiene. These foods provide the calcium and phosphorus to keep teeth strong. Those who cannot digest milk products; vegetables such as spinach and broccoli are sources of high calcium. Crunchy fruits (for example, apples and pears) and vegetables are also mouth friendly. The extra water content in these fruit neutralises their sugar content. Hilary Sherice Browne, Dental Hygienist at Dr. Roze & Associates Dental Clinic said, “We should avoid eating foods that are high in sugar as they can lead to tooth decay. The following foods can help your teeth and gums stay healthy: cheese, cranberries, green tea, nuts & seeds, crunchy vegetables and CONNECTOR APRIL 53

HEALTH & WELLBEING strawberries and the best drink you can take in for your body and your teeth is water." Bad Food Any food with large sugar content such as cookies, cakes, pies, breads, muffins, potato chips is harmful for your teeth. These foods stick to your teeth and help bacteria grow in your mouth. Bacteria converts sugar and carbohydrates into acids which attack the enamel in teeth, starting the process of decay. In addition, cough drops should be used only when necessary as they, like sugary candy, contribute to tooth decay. Limit your consumption of sugarcontaining drinks, including soft drinks, alcohol, lemonade, and coffee or tea with added sugar Dr. Joy Clinic said, “Carbonated soft drinks are the leading source of added sugar among kids and teens. Besides being loaded with sugar, most soft drinks contain phosphoric and citric acids that wear away tooth enamel.” Rinse with mouthwash Mouthwash is not only an agent to mask bad breath, but also very helpful in strengthening your teeth. You should buy therapeutic mouthwash that helps in strengthening teeth and maintaining overall oral hygiene. Rinsing with a therapeutic mouthwash before bed will help keep your teeth free of plaque and cavities and your gums protected from gingivitis. Consult with your dentist about which mouthwash is good for you. But, in general, you should buy a www.connector.ae

mouthwash that is alcohol free, as alcohol can dry out the mouth. It will then reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth and make your teeth more vulnerable to bacterial growth. Visit your dentist regularly Just because you are brushing, flossing and eating right, it does not mean that it is an excuse to not visit your dentist. Make a habit to visit your dentist for regular dental check-up and teeth cleaning. There are few dental problems that you may not be able to identify. A regular dental check-up will save you from long painful dental treatments in the future. Mark your calendar to maintain your long running oral hygiene. Be aware of teeth grinding If you have a habit of teeth grinding in your sleep or general, you need to take safety measures otherwise it will only lead to teeth sensitivity and worn tooth enamel. A dentist cannot stop you from teeth grinding but can make a mouth guard that you can wear at night to protect your teeth from the effects of grinding. How to teach children about oral hygiene Dr. Agnes Roze, Specialist Pediatric Dentist at Dr. Roze & Associates Dental Clinic said, “Use the two by two rule, brush for two minutes twice per day. Only a pea-sized quantity of toothpaste is needed, and children should have their first dental checkup no later than one year old.” CONNECTOR APRIL 55

Your skin and you

acne & anti-aging

W hether it’s the first zits that appear post-puberty to the creases that form because of college stress, or the bags under your eyes from sleepless nights, your skin tells a story, even if it’s an inconsistent one. Being the largest organ in your body, it’s of no doubt that it will continue to transform and change just as your life does, and so will your skin routine. With the many issues that may come to your skin, two of the largest concerns for most must be acne and aging. How to address both concerns, which treatments and creams to choose, and to fend off your worries every time you look in the mirror is a struggle for many. But fear not, because we’ve gathered all the information to help you manoeuvre your way through this struggle of skincare. Identifying aging and acne With all the transformations our skin 56 APRIL CONNECTOR

undergoes and the factors that contribute to it, the first step to treatment is learning the signs to identify the characteristics of aging and acne. As you get older your skin begins to lose its elastin, the elastic tissue in which skin typically looks plump and smooth. With that you may find an emergence of wrinkles, dryness and age spots as well as underlying veins and bones. “Our skin becomes more transparent, caused by the thinning of the epidermis. Skin aging also leads to becoming more easily bruised due to thinner blood vessel walls.” says Dr. Fatima Habib, Specialist Dermatologist at CosmeSurge Clinics. Acne, of course, is much easier to identify, but the variations of its form may not be. Acne is a disorder of the skin caused when the sebaceous gland in #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING skin becomes infected or inflamed. “The sebaceous glands lie just beneath the skin's surface. They produce an oil called sebum, the skin's natural moisturiser” says Dr. Fatma Mostafa, Senior Consultant Dermatologist and Head of Dermatology Department at University Hospital Sharjah “these follicles open onto the skin through pores. Increased levels of androgens (male hormones) cause the glands to produce too much sebum. When excess sebum combines with dead, sticky skin cells, a hard plug or comedo forms. It blocks the pore hence forming an acne.” The different types of acne can be categorised in two subcategories: noninflammatory which are whiteheads and blackheads, and inflammatory acne which are pimples that are typically red and swollen. These consist of papules, hard, clogged pores and very delicate to touch, cystic acne, which is one of the hardest types to treat and are very painful, Nodules which are very deep within in the skin, and pustules which are like papules but are filled with pus and often have yellow or white heads on top. What to look for in anti-aging & acne creams For anti-aging purposes, Dr. Fatima Habib at Cosmesurge says it is crucial to have a good diet that is full of antioxidants www.connector.ae

especially with Vitamin C as it plays a large role in the synthesis of collagen which attributes to restoring skin and prevent damage. Topical antioxidants, such as coffee berry, CoQ10, and Vitamin E, also help to rejuvenate and protect skin. Other ingredients to look for in creams are green tea, black tea, oolong tea and grape seed extract which promote healing. Dr. Habib advises that when seeking an over the counter treatment to also look for peptides or retinol. Retinoids, particularly assist in re-thickening the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Looking for the right acne cream may deem a little more difficult. Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Mayur Bhobe at Cocoona Centre for Aesthetic Transformation says that the creams should have low concentrations of ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and retinoids and should be used with caution as directed by the physician. Benzoyl peroxide is an ingredient that kills bacteria which causes acne, helping to remove dead skin cells that clogs pores. Other ingredients to look for are salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids. Some recommended creams Anti-Aging • Olay Pro-X Deep Wrinkle Treatment • SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex CONNECTOR APRIL 57

HEALTH & WELLBEING • Aveeno Absolutely Ageless Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 • SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum • RoC Deep Wrinkle Serum Acne: • Infini Microneedling • Elta MD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 • Bellafill • PCA Skin Pigment Gel • Verso Dark Spot Fix • Fractionated Laser Skin Resurfacing • Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion *Creams suggested by Dr. Fatma Mostafa Senior Consultant Dermatologist and Head of Dermatology Department at University Hospital Sharjah. Seeing a dermatologist When over the counter creams are ineffective, it’s never too late to seek professional help. “Aging and acne is something you can’t control, but the scientifically superior medical world can help you slower the process and keep acne at bay” says Dr. Fatma Mostafa from University Hospital Sharjah. “A patient should always see the dermatologist for these issues” says Dr. Mayur Bhobe at Cocoona “Acne for instance if it is a chronic problem. Hence it needs to be evaluated and the appropriate treatment needs to be started according to the severity.” For acne, if you don’t see 58 APRIL CONNECTOR

any changes even after 2 to 3 months of consistent use of over the counter treatment or if you notice signs of more skin issues including discolouration, itching, rashes, and scarring, you should consult a dermatologist. also it is advised to see a dermatologist if you see signs of premature aging or if you notice pigmented lesions, keratotic lesions, and sun damage. Clinical Treatments Some clinical treatments for acne include chemical peels, using acids such as salicylic acid to decrease oiliness, pigmentation and open blocked pores. There are also treatments taken orally that assist with most severe cases such as oral retinoid. “The oral retinoid isotretinoin is for people with the most severe types of acne that do not respond to other treatments (nodular or cystic)” says Dr. Fatima Habib at CosmeSurge. There is also hormone therapy for those with androgen excess in which patients are given a lowdose of estrogen and other medications. “Anti-ageing procedures include those to erase wrinkles such as Botox injections,” says Dr Mayur Bhobe “hyaluronic acid fillers for volume loss and sagging, and the sagging of jawline and neck can be corrected by energy-based devices such as microneedling radio frequency and ultrasound based tightening systems.” #connectordubai

Breathing to manage your anxiety

I n this fast paced and stressful life we live, anxiety is bound to take its toll on you. An easy technique to tackle these feelings is a Yogic breathing technique called Pranayama. Pranayama is derived from two Sanskrit words: ‘prana’ which means life force and ‘yama’ which means to regulate. According to Ashram Yoga, Pranayama means regulating or changing the way we breath slightly to raise the energy level in the body and mind. So here are a few Yogic breathing techniques to help you deal with anxiety:

Sudarshan Kriya Kneel on a rug, in a way that your shins and feet touch the floor. Then sit back on your heels, bottom on the floor and ankles grazing the hips. Practice the position before you start breathing. The first cycle of Sudarshan Kriya is simple short inhales and exhales, the second cycle is breaths that last twice as long as the first cycle, and lastly the third is a set of deeper inhales and exhales longer than the second cycle. www.connector.ae

Real Belly Breath With one hand on your belly, relax your abdominal muscles, and slowly inhale through the nose, bringing air into the bottom of your lungs. Continue to inhale as your rib cage expands outward, and finally, the collar bones rise. At the peak of the inhalation, pause for a moment, then exhale gently from the top of your lungs to the bottom. At the end of exhalation, contract your abdominal muscles slightly to push residual air out of the bottom of your lungs. Nadi Shodhana This is a good breathing technique especially if you’re feeling anxious by DRYP Hot Yoga in JLT. Hold your right thumb over your right nostril and inhale deeply through your left nostril. At the peak of your inhalation, close off your left nostril with your fourth finger, lift your right thumb, and then exhale smoothly through your right nostril. Continue for 3 to 5 minutes, alternating your breathing through each nostril. *With special thanks to DRYP Hot Yoga Studio and Ashram Yoga. CONNECTOR APRIL 59

Exercise,

a stress buster It is no secret that exercise acts as a stress buster, so why don’t more people take this into consideration when everyday life starts to consume the mind.

S tress, now a common cause of heart disease and high blood pressure has been dubbed the ‘silent killer’ of today’s generation. However more than ever studies show that physical activities can act as medicine for psychological health and stress resistance. We spoke to Group Exercise instructor at Fitness First Andrea Giovannini to find out why. Andrea takes us back to hard cold scientific fact and the science behind this is broken down into two simple mechanisms’; Physiological and Psychological. Physiological mechanism is the physical 60 APRIL CONNECTOR

activity of exercise and is down to a little something we call endorphins. Endorphins, produced by the nervous system work as an anti-depressant and raise pain resistance, giving us the feeling of wellness and euphoria. Endorphins are released each and every time we exercise creating a natural, long lasting satisfaction. Psychological mechanism is where the mind comes in play. Doing a workout, especially a group training session like the many on offer at Fitness First, helps you to be distracted from anxiety driven thoughts, mental rumination and keep concentration exclusively focused on the #connectordubai

particularly good for strengthening social bonds and reducing stress. XFit is also an excellent way to combat stress and the social effects of this level of group exercise are overwhelming.

Science aside, as we know too well happiness comes from within but it is important to allow this feeling to embrace your mind, body and soul. How you may ask? The secret is exercise!

Group exercise as a whole accumulates feelings of being a part of something - a community, a team, a crew, a tribe. All these feelings have an immense effect on one’s wellbeing, overall happiness and stress reduction.

Andrea Giovannini informs us that exercise is a key component with its fantastic social and wellness benefits. Being active allows you to meet new people who enjoy an active lifestyle, and many forms of exercise allow you to develop a physical body that improves your self-confidence, which can translate into several areas of your life. A royal bath at Le Royal Club Spa A s you drive up to Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, you meander through the hotel property to reach the brand new Royal Club which features Le Royal Club Spa with serene white décor. The spa offers a range of relaxation therapies and I chose to review Signature Hammam Experience which follows the rituals of Morrocon Hammam aiming to regenerate baby skin and gives you a blush red face. The spa manager after explaining the benefits of the hammam introduced me to my lovely Moroccan masseuse. She took me to the dry hot room embellished with two lavish marble tables, and a steam room. The setting of the room instantly set the royal tones. The hammam started with hot water rinse. I sat on the hot marble slab and the masseuse gently poured water from a quaint sliver bowl over me. That was quite a queenly thing to start with. Later, she applied heena soap all over my body followed by a ten minute rest session in the steam room. The soap was rinsed using lots of hot water temperatures of water were set to my chosen comfort levels. 62 APRIL CONNECTOR

The second stage involved scraping off the dead skin using a Kessa glove. I was amazed to see the ammount dead skin left on the marble shelf. After rinsing the leftover dead skin off my body, the masseur gave me a very restful Aragan hair oil treatment and full body scrub. That’s not all. After one more hot water rinse, came the most invigorating and mind soothing slice, where I enjoyed a full body massage with a paste of fresh lavender infused with organic ingredients. The experience totally sent me into a slumber. After the most appeasing massage, the masseur sent me to relax in the steam room. And, after the final hot water rinse, I changed into my clothes in a dedicated dressing room and was served a hot cup of mint tea. The whole experience was enjoyable, and the masseuse was particularly impresive. the experience been enhanced with soothing background music. Smash, yell, stomp, tear

H ow amazing would that be, if we tell you that now you have a place which offers you the opportunity to hurl as many plates and glasses you wish and allows you to stomp all over TV sets and laptops to shatter into pieces, and all that without being punished or without having you grounded at home? Billing it as a day spa, because all it wants is for you to feel at peace, Dubai get it’s first Smash Room. It’s a rebels version of a mindsoothing spa, but with no masseur around to help you feel relaxed, where you vent out all your rage by smashing TV's, laptops, plates at this new anger ‘therapy’ room. It’s an alternative workout as well releasing all toxins that come from suppressed feelings. Located in Al Quoz, this new place has a very rugged warehouse look with walls painted with quirky graffiti art. It has four rooms filled with junk electronics such as furniture, TVs, laptops and fragile plates, glasses and vases sourced through donations and local scrap dealers. There is a choice of tools to help you smash things up, including cricket bats, baseball bats, and sledge hammers - so you choose your favourite destruction weapon. www.connector.ae

This ‘therapy’ session like any other spa session comes with different options. “The Quickie” session for thirty minutes includes eight small items, two medium and one large item priced at Dhs 99; to vent out a little more fury, get into “Smash and Dash” for Dhs 149. But, if you are looking for something to release a serious rage, there is “the Big Bang” room given for one hour priced at Dhs 249. “Two to Tango” option is available for those who want to be accompanied by a friend to the Smash Room. This option will cost you Dhs 299. The Smash Room does not allow more than 2 people inside each room for safety reasons. Last but not least, get a box of your own things and smash them for Dhs 75. Don’t worry, safety first. Protective wear such as helmets with face guards, gloves, kneepads and chest protective gear are given. The only word of advice is to wear active wear and closed toe shoes and only those aged 16 yeasr and over are allowed to smash. Umm Sequim Road, Al Quoz 4, Dubai. Dogs are even more

like us than we thought The only rescue group hosting. adoption days every Friday.

I t's likely no surprise to dog owners, but growing research suggests that man's best friend often acts more human than canine. Dogs can read facial expressions, communicate jealousy, display empathy, and even watch TV, studies have shown. They've picked up these people-like traits during their evolution from wolves to domesticated pets, which occurred between 11,000 and 16,000 years ago, experts say. In particular, "paying attention to us, 64 APRIL CONNECTOR

getting along with us, [and] tolerating us" has led to particular characteristics that often mirror ours, says Laurie Santos, director of the Yale Comparative Cognition Laboratory. Here are a few of the latest studies showing the human side of our canine companions. Eavesdropping dogs Social eavesdropping or people-watching is central to human social interactions, since it allows us to figure out who's nice and who's mean. #connectordubai

ANIMAL MAGIC According to a study published in August in the journal Animal Behaviour, our dogs listen in too. (Read "Animal Minds" in National Geographic magazine.) In a new study, scientists tested 54 dogs that each watched their owners struggle to retrieve a roll of tape from a container. The dogs were divided into three groups: helper, non-helper, and control. In the helper group, the owner requested help from another per-son, who held the container. In the non-helper group, the owner asked for help from a person, who then turned their back without helping. In the control group, the additional person turned his or her back without being asked for help. In all experiments, a third, "neutral" person sat in the room. After the first round of experiments, the neutral person and the helper or nonhelper both offered treats to the dog. In the non-helper group, canines most frequently favoured the neutral person's

www.connector.ae

treat, shunning the non-helper. However, in the helper group, the dogs did not favor either the helper or the neutral person over the other. Scientists have previously observed similar results in human infants and tufted capuchin monkeys. (See "Can Dogs Feel Our Emotions? Yawn Study Suggests Yes). So are dogs taking sides by ignoring the people who are mean to their owners? Only future research will tell. In the meantime, SNIFF is there to rescue the poor souls off the streets to rehabilitate them to then present them to potential new families!
