EDITOR’S NOTE
Goodbye 2017 and hello 2018, Happy New Year everyone! Whether you spent the festive season back in your home country with family and friends, stayed in Dubai or went on vacation I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and haven’t piled on too many pounds like I did! I’ve given up making resolutions as I simply break them after the first week or so but I’m determined to get fit and lose a few pounds this month, I will keep you posted. Talking about resolutions, this issue is all about you and your health and wellbeing. We’ve got everything from clean eating, gut health, food allergies, keeping fit and wellness holidays to help you battle the excesses of 2017 and start the new year in the right way. There’s loads going on in town this month with the triathlon, Ironman 70.3, Evita The Musical, the Dubai Shopping Festival and my personal favourite Cirque Du Soleil’s Toruk which was inspired by Avatar, I can’t wait to see it! Enjoy

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR This time of year is really difficult with the kids school holidays as during the summer we send them back home for the entire 10 weeks. So your article certainly came in good use as we managed to get them into a camp for the week, although they’re not cheap are they! Thanks and regards Collette.
I read this with interest as I know lots of families who have really struggled financially this year which has led to relationship breakdowns. It’s good to see you highlight topics such as this. All the best Dana.
Thanks to the team at Connector for all the festive season information. We were able to sort out our brunch for the family and visit a couple of the Christmas tree lighting ceremonies. Have a great New Year! Sharon.
I was so happy to see this as I’m a big believer in adopting animals, I have 5 cats and 2 dogs who all get along well. Come on people start adopting and remember a pet is for life not just Christmas! Thanks Jo.

THE REVIEW
Hibachi at Roda Al Bustan
I t’s been a while since we last ventured over onto the other side of Dubai Creek, so when we heard all the recent positives about Hibachi at the Roda Al Bustan, we thought we’d try it out for ourselves. Hibachi, which means charcoal grill, is a teppanyaki restaurant. Teppanyaki for the uninitiated is a Japanese style dining experience that gives you a front row seat as a chef prepares your meal right before your eyes on an iron griddle. We went on a Sunday evening which is ‘surf and turf night’ with unlimited food and drink for a fixed price. The restaurant is already busy by the time we arrive for our 7.30pm reservation. We are seated at a large table surrounding an iron plate cooking surface where the chef has all his utensils and ingredients lined on the borders of the grill. He then proceeds with a ceremonial burning of oil with epic flames as an introduction. Whilst we are served miso soup and a salad the chef starts preparing shrimps with stunning flair and speed as he juggles and flips them on the griddle. They taste fresh and are perfectly cooked. This is followed by steak, chicken, salmon, hamour, a selection of www.connector.ae
vegetables, fried rice and more of anything anyone wants. Once you’ve had enough you are escorted to the formal dining area where the desert buffet is served. The evening was very entertaining and watching our chef display his culinary expertise whilst slicing and dicing is theatrical and wonderful on the senses. The food quality and service are both very good but it’s the chef that steals the show! The non-alcoholic package costs Dhs 229, including soft drinks, mocktails and juices, and the alcoholic Dhs 285 which includes hops, grape, cocktails and spirits. Children under 6 are free and up to 12 years old are Dhs 110 each. We would certainly recommend booking ahead as the restaurant can get busy. For a great night out with friends, family or even work colleagues it’s certainly worth the effort to get across town for the Hibachi experience. For reservations call 04-2820000 CONNECTOR JANUARY 31

Make 2018 the year
you organise your finances! As with most new year’s, you probably have a list of resolutions as long as your Christmas credit card bill. Lose weight, stop smoking, save money - do any of these sound familiar? Yet by the time it comes to the year-end, you will probably have achieved only a handful of these.
A ccording to the Journal of Psychology over 50% of people set new year’s resolutions and the reason for failing them is that we set unrealistic goals for ourselves, meaning it’s too easy to throw in the towel when the mountain seems too big to climb. My first piece of advice would be that this new year, you set just one goal for yourself and subsequent smaller goals to reach it, that way you have a much higher success rate. My second piece of advice is make that goal organising your finances. Now I may be biased, but it is no secret that 2018 in the UAE will be a tougher climate than its predecessor. According to figures from PayFort, nearly half of the population is in debt and 28% of 34 JANUARY CONNECTOR
us are failing to save at all, and with the introduction of the 5% VAT on most goods and services, the cost of living will ultimately be higher. However, this need not be an issue, if you are money savvy and set the groundwork early. By putting systems in place from the start and sticking to them over the long term, 2018 can be the year when you have greater financial freedom, now and forever. But where do I start? I hear you cry. What do I prioritise? It’s a great question and a tough one to answer. Debt, short-term savings, pensions, school fees - they are all priorities and one shouldn’t be favoured over the other. But with a few simple steps, you’ll be climbing that mountain in no time. #connectordubai

PERSONAL FINANCE
Know your spending habits You can’t start saving until you know exactly what you are spending your money on so the first thing to do is write down your expenditures or use apps such as Mint to track. Split your expenditures into bills and everything else so you can see which areas you can realistically cut back on.
2
Make spending relative to your earnings As an expat, it is often easy to get carried away with living an extravagant lifestyle with your higher earnings. However, it is important to make your spending’s relative to what you are bringing in. For instance, ask yourself - do you need to live in the most expensive area of town? Do you need to buy a brand-new car, or will one a couple years old with a full-service history do? No-one wants to spend most of their wages on rent and car loans.
3
Clear bad debt There are two types of debt - good debt such as mortgages and bad debt such as credit cards. Make it a priority to clear bad debt as soon as possible to avoid paying high amounts of interest over a long period of time. First, pay the debts that incur higher interest rates and get rid of them quickly. But also, be smart about it; for example, if you had a crazy month and spent too much on your credit card, sometimes it is worse to pay the minimum amount than to just negotiate the full payment in instalments with the bank. You can also try consolidating them in a single loan as banks often offer a better interest rates on a promotional basis this will help you organise your finances and make it easier by just making one larger payment each month, but be careful with charges. Always check your options! The money saved by paying debts can quickly be put towards savings funds that work for you. www.connector.ae
4
Have a rainy-day fund Your rainy-day fund should be at least two times your monthly salary and it is crucial to have it as an expat. In case you lose your job or get sick, this is your money to survive this time as unlike home countries, there is no state benefit to help you out. It is important to remember that this money should be very liquid, so maybe keep it part in cash in your house and part in your savings account. Don`t worry too much about getting interest on it. Additionally, if your rainy-day fund isn’t what it should be or even if it is, it’s very important to have life/critical illness insurance to cover you and your family through tough times.
5
Make a savings plan Once you have cleared bad debt, I recommend saving at least 25% of your salary as it's not just one thing you are saving for. For instance, one part may need to go towards a pension, another to children’s education or perhaps a house deposit. Looking at a list can be daunting, but once a set plan is in place it makes it much easier. When receiving any gratuities or bonuses, put them straight into your savings plan. Gratuities should essentially be seen as a pensions contribution in this area of the world so don’t be tempted to spend it at the end of your employment. Instead, put any cash bonuses straight into a savings scheme so you won’t be tempted to spend. Once you have your plan it’s important to make your money work for you because if it doesn’t, you will have to work longer. Here, you must get an interest aligned with your risk profile and life goals and there are many different options available, from equities to bonds etc. Talk to an expert about this to avoid any bad investments. To conclude, for expats who are generally at a higher paying job and tax-free income, it’s important not to waste the opportunity and save as much as you can whilst you can. KIDS & EDUCATION
Access all admissions
Sail through the school admissions process in the UAE with our handy guide to everything from age regulations to transferring, home schooling to documentation and special needs to fees…
A s little as a decade ago, the schools admission process in the UAE was a fraught time for parents owing to a dearth of schools. Add into the fact that many companies hoarded places by paying hefty retainers and parents were left jumping through hoops for the remaining spots. Fast forward a few years and there’s never been so much choice for mums and dads when it comes to educating their little ones. A recent report by consultants PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Understanding the GCC Education Sector, Country Profile: UAE Dubai, predicted that that Dubai needs a further 74,500 places in 50 new private schools by 2020, with 62,000 more places in 52 new private schools required 36 JANUARY CONNECTOR
in Abu Dhabi. However, the report also pointed out that oversupply could become an issue in the educational sector, since a further 175,000 places are expected to be available by 2020. The predicted glut of places however, will be music to many parents’ ears, offering them more choice and taking the pressure out of an admissions process that can seem daunting thanks to lengthy online forms to fill out, regulations to adhere to and fees to figure out. And that’s before you factor in things like seeking the best inclusivity and support for children with special needs, working out the ‘transfer window’ if you want your child to switch schools and opting out of mainstream education altogether and choosing to home school your kids. #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION Connector has checked in with the KHDA to keep you up to date with everything you need to know about admissions and more… The admission process - an overview Owing to the wide variety of schools all offering different syllabuses, each school has its own set of rules and requirements when it comes to their admissions process. However, in general, the first step is to register online, providing information about parents and child, along with passport, visa and Emirates ID copies, photos and copies of the child’s birth certificate. You’ll also need to provide an up to date vaccination record. If your child needs additional support in their education, you’ll also need to provide documentation pertaining to those requirements. What age do kids start school? The KHDA recently issued new regulations regarding the school starting age for children in the UAE, which came into effect for the academic year 2017-18. The regulations state that for schools whose curriculums start in September, kids must be three years old by December 31 to enrol in FS1. For schools whose curriculums run from April to March (Indian, Pakistani and Japanese), children need to be three by July 31. www.connector.ae
Application limitations? When it comes to choosing the right school for your child in the UAE, there is no limit to the number of schools you can apply for, as long as you follow the application procedure for each individual school. However, applying to many can prove costly, as you’ll need to pay non-refundable registration fees for each, which can range from Dhs 500 Dhs1,000 each time. School fees School fees are set by individual schools and regulated by the KHDA which has developed a framework which can be applied to most private schools that have been operating for more than three years. The school’s ability to increase fees is based on their school performance results as assessed by Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB) and the Educational Cost Index (ECI) as calculated by the Dubai Statistics Center (DSC). The percentage by which the school can increase fees are as follows: Outstanding, ECI x 2; Very Good, ECI x 1.75; Good, ECI x 1.5; Acceptable, ECI; Weak, ECI; Very Weak, ECI. Flexibility is considered for not-for-profit and embassy schools. CONNECTOR JANUARY 37
KIDS & EDUCATION How to transfer from another school Before you think about transferring your child, remember that you are obliged to give the current school a term’s notice, and to fulfil your fee obligations for that term. For transfer between schools using the same curriculum, there is a degree of flexibility for parents. From FS1 to Year 6 there’s no cut-off date; for Year 7 to 10 the cut-off date is the first week of the second term, and for Year 11 to 13 the cut-off date is 60 days from the beginning of the academic year. When it comes to transferring between schools which carry different curriculums, schools may apply their own stipulations, with most allowing curriculum and school transfer at the start of the academic year up to year 10 in the UK curriculum and up to the equivalent (grade 9) in other international and Asian curricula. Home schooling in the UAE Home schooling has gained popularity over the past few years, with parents citing a variety of reasons from the cost of school fees, the stress of the school run and issues with bullying. Emirati families who choose a home schooling option must use the UAE curriculum and education authorities will 38 JANUARY CONNECTOR
provide materials and support. However, the Ministry of Education does not have regulations for expatriates. Parents who chose to home school often join organisations with other families, forming their own ‘schools’, which allows parents to teach other kids as well as their own. Children with special needs Mainstream educational inclusion is encouraged by the KHDA, meaning that where appropriate, children with special needs are educated alongside their peers. Many schools now offer places to pupils with SEND (Special Educational Needs), providing additional support and specialist staff. Pupils are assessed on a case by case basis. The KHDA’s United Arab Emirates’ School Inspection Network states, “The UAE is determined to become an inclusive, barrierfree, rightsbased society that promotes, protects, and ensures the success of all groups of students. The impact of inclusion should be seen through the learning experiences of all children within UAE schools.” Adding, “Developing inclusion will involve students, professionals, parents, carers and the wider community. Provision made by schools for students with special educational needs is now integrated into this framework.” #connectordubai

Restoring body wrap
at Iridium Spa St Regis Hotel
T his one is definitely not for the faint of heart as it is quite thorough. However, if you suffer from dry, undernourished skin that’s aching for a detox, a Restoring Body Wrap is the way to go.
What’s involved? Quite a lot. First, the therapist rubbed my skin with a dry brush to help loosen any dead skin which made for one of those satisfying moments. Then she used an exfoliating scrub - and scrub she did! This was an unusual sensation as it was essentially a massage but with sand instead of oil. The scrub then had to be rinsed in the shower which already left my skin feeling unbelievably smooth. After my first rinse, I was then covered head-to-toe in an Algae mud which smelled like a holiday and transported me to an exotic beach not literally, of course. Next, the therapist wrapped me up in the sheets and a big, fluffy www.connector.ae
towel in a manner that I can only describe as ‘swaddling.’ I have probably never been more comfortable in my life. Once the mud had dried and I had had enough of a nap, it was then time to hit the shower for another rinse, by which time my skin was actually baby soft - and not from the swaddle. The mud is infused with essential oils that rejuvenate your skin, give it some serious TLC and leave it completely hydrated. What are the results? Soft, hydrated and nourished skin. I was a bit on-the-fence about the scrubbing process as I felt that, with having sensitive skin, it would actually cause irritation. But, my skin has never been more grateful for so much attention! How much? The Restoring Body Wrap is Dhs 580 for 60 minutes. CONNECTOR JANUARY 39

10 bad beauty habits
to kick this year Breaking bad habits is never easy but it’s high time to save face and kick them to the curb.
1
Drinking out of a straw Using a straw may seem harmless and many people believe that it’s better for you. But in actual fact, the act of drinking from a straw requires you to purse your lips which encourages the development of fine lines around your mouth. This is sometimes referred to as ‘smokers lines,’ which involves the same action. Straws also encourage sugary liquids to sit in your mouth rather than being washed down which exposes your teeth to damage.
2 Not changing your pillowcase regularly To put it delicately, your bed can be a bit of a filthy mess. Our bed linens become a safe 40 JANUARY CONNECTOR
haven for bacteria and dirt which build up while we sleep. Not changing your pillowcase leave your skin and hair open to these nasties! Cotton pillowcases also soak up moisture from your skin and can cause your skin to dry out and drag, decreasing its elasticity. Silk or satin pillowcases are less likely to do you damage as they don’t soak up oils or pull on your skin.
3 Not taking your makeup off before a work-out When we get hot, our pores expand which can leave them more exposed to the elements. During a work out, your body temperature increases along with your heart rate. Plus, there’s a lot of other sweaty bodies
#connectordubai
BEAUTY & FASHION in the gym too. Combine that with sweat, bacteria on weights and yoga mats as well as makeup and your pores can become clogged!
4 Using the wrong shampoo A common misconception is that the ‘squeaky clean’ feeling you get after you wash your hair means your shampoo is working. That feeling is actually the absence of the natural oils that your scalp produces - which is imperative to your hair’s health. Shampoos that strip away the oils, take away the protective coating on your hair and making it more likely to break. 5 Skipping out on base coat Base coat is to nails what primer is to your skin. Applying a base coat protects your nails from chemicals that may cause them to become fragile and brittle. It also means you avoid getting those pesky stains that simply wont budge!
6 Overheating your hair Hot shower, blow-dry, straighten! A woman’s typical hair routine involves a lot of heat. The problem with heat is that it expands the hair’s cuticle which makes it thinner and more fragile. Skip out on a blow-dry and let the air do its magic and finish off a shower with a splash of cold water to seal the cuticle. 7
Biting your nails Nail biting has become somewhat of a taboo in the beauty world. But, on average, 30 per cent of us still do it. Aside from ingesting bacteria which can damage your health, biting your nails can leave your cuticles and skin around your finger tips raw which can www.connector.ae
lead to nasty infections! If you struggle with biting, there are ointments that give off a nasty flavour or invest in a stick-on manicure to give your beds a rest!
8
Touching your face It’s a natural reaction to pick at your blemishes, we all do it. But, touching the pimple can cause infection or the bacteria to spread, resulting in a further problems. We actually touch our faces on average 3.6 times a dayConstantly being in contact with your skin can actually make it break out!
9 Getting exfoliation happy Removing dead-skin cells are important if you want to brighten up your complexion and get the most out of your beauty products. However, over exfoliating can cause serious damage to your skin’s natural oils. Exfoliating products themselves can also cause damage. Many products contain micro-beads which are tiny bits of plastic that can create small cuts in your skin, making it prone to infection! It’s recommended that you exfoliate 1-2 times a week using mild, natural scrubs. 10
Licking your lips If your lips are dry it’s almost impossible not to lick them, but it actually dries them out even more. Your saliva contains acids that irritate your lips and continuous licking removes any natural oils you have on your lips. Invest in a good lip balm that protects and soothes your lips, gently exfoliate and stay hydrated for the perfect pout! CONNECTOR JANUARY 41

Swap goals for gratitude & resolutions
for rituals to manifest in 2018 Have you set New Year resolutions and failed before? Have you set goals that never materialised because they were so big you sabotaged them?
T he truth is our unconscious mind and ego that drives our behaviour does not do well to planning these far out huge commitments or dealing with absolutes like “I’m never going to....” or “I will always... “ type of goals. In fact according to according to U.S. News, approximately 80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. I remember over the years living in Dubai having goals such as I will run a marathon, earn this much money, smash my work targets, stop eating chocolate and bread, find a new relationship but “my want list” never worked. 42 JANUARY CONNECTOR
I made these mistakes: 1. My goals were self-absorbed and smoke screens for what I really was desiring. 2. I did not know back then what I do now, and that’s to look first at WHY you really want things. Only when we can get to the heart of what we want, can we find the correct action and solution. In running a marathon - I was hoping to feel good and better about myself for achieving this, what I was really desiring was more self-love and approval from others for my achievement. In earning more money - I was hoping to relieve my fear and anxieties of the #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING future and fear of not having enough and the hope that more money would bring happiness. In hitting my work targets - I was hoping for more praise, recognition, and acknowledgement from others. In reality it was because I was not feeling confident, good enough inside and I needed others to validate this. In stopping to eat chocolate and bread I wanted to restrict and control myself and my life in probably one of the only things we can control in life, our food, and bodies. I was using the food to discipline myself. I also wanted to have the flat stomach you see on adverts. Why? I thought that would make me feel happier, as hopefully more people would find me attractive and I would accept myself more. So here I was wanting self-love and love from others. In finding a new relationship - I wanted love. To be loved by a man in exactly the way I wanted, for them to behave in exactly the way I want them to behave. What was missing here was allowing life to happen rather than trying to force life to fit me and my want list. Plus, I lacked self-acceptance. My years of experience have taught me that if you want to manifest new things in your life there are 4 keys to focus on, after all my challenges I have found this is the healthiest and easiest way to go about having your dreams come true. It has not only worked for me it has also worked for countless seeking individuals I have helped online and in Dubai.
Step 1 Keep asking yourself why you want it Write a want / goal list and then STOP and ask yourself “why is this important to me?” and keep asking that question again and again and again. The genuine answer will be revealed, everything comes down to the need to feel happy and loved in my experience. See for yourself, explore your real motives. Only then can we check we are addressing it in a healthily way... www.connector.ae
Step 2 Check your goal is good for you It may be that your goal is perfect for you or it may be that your New Year resolution is way off from what you are really seeking. Ask yourself what is it that needs to be dealt with and am I addressing the real need here or trying to find happiness in something that will not bring it. Ask will this bring me what I seek or is there another more beneficial way? Step 3 Swap resolutions for rituals
Sometimes our goals even if good for us, can be just a way we are trying to predict and control ourselves and the future. Which is futile as we just do not know what is around the corner. It is often why many of us suck at the New Year resolutions we set ourselves. Often when we set a mammoth task, demanding to ourselves that we are going to change something forever, our mind says, “that’s too much to handle” and we then sabotage it. The excuses come flooding in for why we cannot do something and “should” give up. Just imagine if you didn’t say to yourself “I am going to exercise 6 times a week, stop eating this, only drink on this day...” and instead you said each morning “today I am going to focus on my health, relationships, and self-confidence and today I will do__________” Imagine if you planned each day, each morning based on what matters to you most at this point in your life. It’s much easier to stick to and more flexible to the stressors and occurrences of life. That way if we must travel, fall ill, or have something else come up that disrupts our plans, we can adapt and still take care of ourselves and others. If you had a New Year resolution and broke it, you may think “I quit, that’s it.” If you have a daily ritual for love and kindness you can instead serve your greatest good. I failed several times when I first tried to give up smoking (8 years ago and drinking in the past few years). It was because CONNECTOR JANUARY 43
HEALTH & WELLBEING I said “I’m not going to smoke / drink ever again. It didn’t work for me, it only made me worried, it didn’t work because I cannot predict the future, none of us can. That’s why when I help individuals and couples to break habits, it’s important to focus on everything one day at a time. Our mind hates the word forever and never, for so many people goals that are for a lengthy period or indefinite period just don’t work. If on the other hand I say to myself “just for today I will not drink, overeat, spend money unnecessarily, etc. “ then I can make the changes I seek come true. The key to this is living in the moment, creating rituals each day that serve your highest good. Asking yourself what can I do for myself, my health or relationship TODAY. If you are having a challenging time right now, as we all invariably do at times focusing one day at a time is key. We can all deal with the stress of one day, it is when we add the burden of yesterday’s pain or the anxieties of tomorrow that we fall down. Love and embrace life by living a day at a time. What daily rituals can you create to be the person you really are and meant to be? 44 JANUARY CONNECTOR
Step 4 Change goals for gratitude
There is no better way to reach your goals than by regular gratitude. I want lists never work, it’s taken me decades to realise that. What does work is listing 3 or more things a day you are truly grateful for and really feeling blessed. If you are in a relationship, share them with your husband / wife, if you are single find a friend to share them with. If you want to break an unhealthy habit, celebrate what is healthy about you today or what helped you to stay healthy. If you want a closer relationship with your partner, then appreciate the things that are going well and what you are happy about. Having helped transform countless marriages and lives using these principles, including my own, I’ve realised that it is about getting what you want that makes us happy. It’s about living each day as purposefully and lovingly as possible. Clean eating
in the new year After the endless amounts of food that I have enjoyed during my Christmas holidays, it’s safe to say I am done with being in a constant food coma. I mean don't get me wrong, I have truly enjoyed all of it and especially spoiling (with that I mean mostly feeding) my friends and family. But I am finally ready to jump back on to the health wagon and get into my ‘healthy active’ routine again. Which means the 80/20 rule. 80% clean eating as ‘they’ like to call it and 20% of fun. My 20% of fun usually happen on the weekends where I enjoy breakfasts with the girls and some cake here and there, preferably carrot cake from Lime tree. Gosh, isn't that the best cake in town?! But let’s talk about the clean eating. Now would you believe me if I’d told you that eating clean does not mean boring? And that creating a delicious and filling clean eating menu isn’t as hard as it may seem. Clean eating is about limiting processed foods - not about limiting flavor! Yes, that is right. It simply means eating whole foods that either grow in nature or you can't hunt. It simply means staying away from anything that comes in packages and is overly processed. Many clients and friends often ask me how I eat and what kind of foods I choose. Well today I am going to share a few recipes from my daily eating routine with you and secretly I am hoping you may use one or two in your daily routine too. Here’s to a happy, fun and healthy 2018 for all of us! www.connector.ae
Morning routine - speed up that metabolism 500ml hot water 2 tsp raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar juice from ½ lemon Note: Drink it right after waking up and before breakfast.
Breakfast - my favourite 2 eggs 2 large mushrooms, sliced 1 spring onion, sliced 4 cherry tomatoes ½ avocado for toppings 1 tsp turmeric powder Salt & Pepper Method Heat ½ tsp of coconut oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add in the mushrooms, spring onion and tomatoes. Add salt, pepper and turmeric powder and sauté for 5 minutes. Once tomatoes are soft, crack eggs on top of your veggies and cover the pan with a lid or some tin foil. Allow to cook for 2 minutes or until eggs are cooked to your liking. I like mine medium so about 2 minutes, cooks them perfect for my liking. Add some fresh baby spinach onto a serving bowl or a plate and gently add your eggs and veggies on top. Add your avocado slices on top and enjoy your breakfast. CONNECTOR JANUARY 45
HEALTH & WELLBEING Lunch - healthy & tasty 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed ½ red onion, finely chopped 1 carrot, finely diced 250g good-quality tomato pasta sauce or organic tomato passata 1x 400g tin of organic cooked lentils, drained and rinsed 4 small zucchinis 1-2 tbsp. Parmesan cheese, grated (optional) Method Heat a large non-stick pan over mediumheat and add the olive oil. Add red onion and garlic to the pan and cook until translucent and softened. Add the finely diced carrot and continue to cook until soft. Add drained lentils and tomato sauce/ passata to the pan and stir until combined. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes until ragu is fragrant, adding more liquid (sauce or hot water) if it seems too dry. Season generously with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, cut the ends of the zucchini and create the zucchini noodles using a spiralizer. If you don’t have a spiralizer, cut them finely using a knife or push the
zucchini along the top of a grater, in long strokes in order to create long, thin ribbons of zucchini. Add zucchini noodles to the simmering ragu and cook for a further 5 minutes, until softened. Serve into two bowls and top with parmesan cheese, if desired. Notes: This recipe also works well with organic minced meat (beef, chicken or turkey). Just substitute meat for the lentils and ensure the meat is well cooked before adding the sauce/passata and simmering. A wholegrain or gluten-free pasta variety may also be used instead of zucchini.
Afternoon snacking - Skip the coffee and have this instead! 1 small cucumber juice from 1 lemon 1 stalk celery ½ green apple 1 knob ginger 2 cubes frozen spinach 1 tsp superfoods powder (optional) Method Add all the above ingredients into a Vitamix blender and blend on high for 20 seconds. Drink immediately. 46 JANUARY CONNECTOR
#connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING The night ritual - golden milk 1 cup almond milk or coconut milk ½-1 tsp ground turmeric ½ tsp cinnamon pinch of cayenne pepper pinch of ground ginger or knob of fresh ginger, minced 1 tsp coconut oil Liquid stevia if needed Method Add the milk to a heated pot on the stove while adding in the rest of the ingredients. Stir and remove once heated.
Dinner - soup for the win 2 large zucchinis 1 large broccoli 3 tbsp. olive oil 1 leek 3 vegetable stock cubes 1 tsp. chilli flakes 1 tsp. Himalayan salt ½ tsp. cumin Cracked pepper Bunch parsley, chopped Method: Heat olive oil in a large stock pot. Slice zucchini, broccoli and leeks, then add to pot. Add chilli flakes, cumin salt and pepper and fry until cooked through. Add water and stock cubes to cover vegetables and bring to a boil. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Carefully add soup to a Vitamix or food processor, or use a hand processor to blend until smooth. Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped parsley, crushed walnuts or almond crumbs. www.connector.ae

Food allergies
and intolerances
A 5-year-old boy is rushed to hospital with sudden onset of facial swelling, hoarseness of voice and difficulty breathing, after ingestion of cake at a birthday party. This is a typical example of adverse food reactions, commonly encountered by emergency clinicians. Adverse food reactions are classified as either food intolerance or food allergies. It is important to differentiate between the two, as food allergy which is immune mediated, is more severe as it can involve multiple organ systems of the body including skin, respiratory, gastrointestinal and cardio-vascular system. It can also lead to life threatening hypersensitivity reaction, as described in the fore-mentioned scenario. Not 48 JANUARY CONNECTOR
only this, patients with confirmed IgEmediated allergy are at risk of developing asthma and allergic rhinitis later on. Symptoms of gastrointestinal tract can be variable, ranging from vomiting, diarrhoea and spitting up to more complex manifestations like failure to thrive, proctocolitis and enterocolitis. Nasal congestion, rhinorrhoea and wheezing, hypotension, arrhythmias and atopic dermatitis are the features of respiratory, cardiovascular and dermatological systems. Food intolerance, in contrast, is non-immune mediated, milder and its involvement is generally limited to gastrointestinal tract. It generally results from lack of a specific enzyme #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING like lactase deficiency, or bacterial over growth, presence of food additives, or naturally occurring substances in certain foods like amines in cheese and caffeine in chocolates and coffee. Although adverse food reactions are reported by more than 1/3rd parents, the rates of verifiable food allergies are much lower. The prevalence of true food allergy is 6 to 8% in children and 3 to 4% in adults. Peak incidence occurs in infancy. Most allergies are generally outgrown, but peanut and tree nut allergies tend to persist. The most common food allergens are cow milk protein, soy protein, egg, chicken, fish, nuts, wheat, rye and barley. Allergy to pollen can lead to allergy to certain fruits and vegetables like apple, banana, kiwi, potato and celery. Cross-reactivity occurs when the proteins in one substance are like the proteins in another. There is a high degree of cross-reactivity between cow's milk and milk from other mammals, www.connector.ae
between peanuts, legumes and tree nuts, and between pollen and fruits. Previously it was recommended to avoid all crossreactive foods, but this practice has been abandoned and can lead to the exclusion of multiple foods from the diet. Whilst this might be unhealthy for an adult, it can be positively harmful in a child and can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies. The tools available for diagnosing food allergy includes a detailed history, physical examination, trial of elimination diets, diet diary, skin prick testing and specific IgE testing. The history should focus on identifying whether the adverse food reaction is an allergy or intolerance. Other details like type and quantity of food, association with exercise, similar reactions in past, personal or family history of eczema, asthma or allergies should be sought. A negative skin prick test rules out the possibility of Ig-E mediated form of food allergy. On the other hand, a positive skin test should further be evaluated by more definitive tests like specific Ig-E tests, food elimination and challenge CONNECTOR JANUARY 49
HEALTH & WELLBEING tests, as many patients with positive skin prick test do not react when the alleged food is ingested. Therefore, before labelling a child as being allergic to a certain type of food, it is mandatory to be sure that true food allergy is actually present. For this elimination diets, followed by food challenge, performed by an allergist, under control settings should be performed. This call to put emphasis on the fact, that broad exclusionary diets such as avoidance of all legumes, cereals, grains, nuts, animal products is not warranted unless proven otherwise. The mainstay of treatment is avoidance of allergen. This requires extensive patient education, including correct reading of food labels, preparation of safe food at home by avoiding cross contamination, avoiding aerosolisation of allergen by extensive handling like grinding or roasting. Also, an allergen may be a component of non-food item like vaccine, drug or cosmetic.
50 JANUARY CONNECTOR
Similarly, breast milk might be a vessel for exposing a new-born to a certain allergen, therefore a mother can be put on a restrictive diet. As most of the children outgrow allergies they should be evaluated by an allergist on yearly to two yearly bases for the development of tolerance. This is done by testing specific IgE levels along with certain clinical criteria, if proven to be tolerant; the allergen food is re-introduced into the diet. Children with severe hypersensitivity reaction and those with asthma along with IgE mediated food allergy should have an epinephrine pen available all times along with a written emergency plan to avoid life threatening complications and must be closely followed by an allergist and a nutritionist. HEALTH & WELLBEING
Gut feelings The use of exercise, diet and supplements to help maintain a healthy lifestyle could be totally undermined if you have poor gut health. For every cell in your body, there are ten bacteria, and most of them can be found in the 2 kg of your large intestine!
I f our gut health is poor due to inflammation and bacterial imbalances, it can have an impact on our immune and nervous systems, and can wreak havoc with our hormonal functions. This is because the gastrointestinal tract is loaded with neurons that release the same neurotransmitters as found in the brain. Upsetting this equilibrium can throw both your body and mood into chaos, and in addition to a poor diet, your delicate inner ecosystem can also be disrupted by environmental stressors.
joint pain, eczema, allergies or acne. Signs of an unhappy gut include surprisingly common complaints such as heartburn, gas, constipation or diarrhoea and intestinal pain or cramping. Chronic inflammation not only greatly decreases absorption of nutrients, but can also lead to leaky gut. This is where the walls of the intestines become hyper permeable, resulting in holes which allow larger, undigested food molecules and other “bad stuff” that is normally rejected, to flow freely into your bloodstream.
The reality is that poor digestive health can be silent. You may think that your digestive tract is healthy - meanwhile, you have unexplained migraines, anxiety, depression,
The belly-brain connection The fact that the brain and belly are linked isn’t surprising. After all, indigestion is a fairly well-known side effect of stress, and studies

HEALTH & WELLBEING are now revealing that the connection is a two-way street - the mind can affect the gut, and the gut can affect the mind. A lack of gut bacteria diversity is directly linked to obesity, depression and anxiety, and numerous human studies have shown that low gut diversity leads to more fat storage and poor insulin sensitivity. A lack of gut diversity can also predispose you to inflammation, which is linked to obesity, heart disease, arthritis and even depression. Start on the road to healing Although not as simple as eating a yoghurt a day, it’s not too difficult to restore your healthy gastrointestinal tract. Here are the top five foods that wreak the most havoc and should be eliminated from your diet. • Sodas - both natural and the artificially sweetened kinds. Numerous studies have shown that sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and aspartame all affect how gut bacteria metabolise energy. They trigger inflammatory responses and feed the bad bacteria and yeasts living in the gut. • Cereal grains - both whole grains and refined flowers from sources such as wheat and barley which is found in bread and pasta. The protein gluten is pro-inflammatory which has a nutrient absorption inhibiting affect. 52 JANUARY CONNECTOR
• Vegetable oils - canola, soy-bean, corn and other oils liquid at room temperature commonly found in processed and restaurant prepared foods are all polyunsaturated fats, which are strongly linked to inflammation and atherosclerosis, and are known carcinogens when heated. • Coffee - not only does caffeine trigger the release of the stress hormone cortisol, it also contains a protein similar to gluten which the immune system can mistakenly react to in the same way. This is known as a crossreaction. Instant coffee was found to be the most cross reactive kind of coffee, while other cross-reactive proteins can be found in milk, corn, oats and rice. • Alcohol - in all forms including beer, wine and spirits, irritate the gut lining. Beer specifically contains gluten-rich cereal grains and fermented organisms that feed candida yeast overgrowth - both of which are directly linked to lining damage and leaky gut. After removing harmful foods from your diet, you need to repair the gut and heal the damaged intestinal lining. By sticking to natural foods and giving up processed foods you can give your body a chance to rest. This, combined with natural gut healers such as L-glutamine, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E), quercetin, #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING aloe vera, and turmeric, can really help to make a difference. Next, you need to restore your gut’s optimal bacterial flora with probiotics like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis. These good bacteria help reinforce and maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract, and help to combat any overgrowth of bad bacteria. In general, a healthy lower intestinal tract should contain around 85% good bacteria. Recommended foods and supplements: • L-Glutamine - Helps to heal and seal the gut along with aiding in recovery after workouts. • Fish Oil - high quality, preferably a liquid, not capsule form, helps reduce inflammation, balance hormones and supports the immune system. • Probiotics - provides live strains of good bacteria to boost your defences. • Mint - soothes the stomach and helps relax the gastrointestinal tract. • Zinc - crucial in the formation of digestive enzymes, mucosal lining and regulating hormones. • Prebiotics - in the form of fermented foods help feed good bacteria. Fermented foods include bioavailable yoghurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut. www.connector.ae
• PH Balancing or Alkaline Foods Anything green like kale, spinach, broccoli, wheatgrass, parsley, chlorella and spirulina are all great at keeping stomach acid levels in check. Other ways to help increase good bacteria levels: • Be wary of overusing antibiotics antibiotics can be a doctor’s first response to common conditions like sore throats, bronchitis and sinus infections. However helpful, antibiotics kill off massive amounts of both “good” and “bad” gut bacteria (“anti-biotic” is the opposite of “probiotic”), so try to explore alternatives whenever possible. • Exercise - exercise boosts the diversity of the bacteria found in the gut, which can improve metabolism, strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation. • Get plenty of sleep - A healthy sleep cycle helps the body produce the hormones melatonin and prolactin, which have been found to improve bacterial balance and help with digestion. So repair and restore your gut with the right foods and habits and your belly and your brain will thank you for it! CONNECTOR JANUARY 53

2018 …New year
…new you!!
Never seem to stick to your New Year’s resolution? With the following simple steps, we will make your journey seamless and help achieve your fitness goals in no time!
W ith New Year comes the opportunity for a fresh start. In order to reach your target weight, make sure you follow a healthy lifestyle that will work best for you and your journey, that will help you keep the determination to maintain a healthy weight. • Find your motivation What’s your motivation? Losing weight? Certain outfits you want to get into? To feel energised? Or simply improve your health? Get clear about what you really want and why you want to change, and then use it to inspire you. 54 JANUARY CONNECTOR
• Set a S.M.A.R.T. goal S: Specific - Make your goal specific. It should be exactly what you want and envision M: Measurable - You can measure your progress, so you can stay on track A: Attainable - Set achievable goals no matter how long it takes R: Realistic - Do not set impossible goals, it will only demotivate you T: Timely - Set a time to achieve your goals and challenge yourself to do so • Start changing gradually Your first small step towards wellness can be a giant leap for your self-confidence. Don’t make the mistake of turning #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING your life into an existence you no longer recognise as your own. Habits take years to form, your best chance to change them is to take it slowly. Drastic changes in your eating routine can result into bigger health issues in the long run and will make you lose your self-control on food; binging and various eating disorders. Make sure your changes are gradual so you don’t revert to old habits. Remember, slow and steady wins the race! • Fuel up on your Greens Vegetables are not only high in vitamins, minerals, and fibers but also fill you up with fewer calories. Make sure you are adding veggies to your daily meals. Fill half of your plate with vegetables, or start your meal with a salad, this helps you not to overeat from the main dish.
full. Don’t add more food onto your plate when you’re done eating, you will soon realise you are full. • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Don’t skip meals, mainly breakfast! Contrary to what many believe, skipping meals does not help you in a weight loss strategy, it only sets your goal back. Skipping meals put your body in starvation mode (your body thinks that you are starving and starts to store fat), and leads to binging on your next meal. Keep in mind your body is like a car (if you do not put fuel in, it will not move), same if you do not put nutrition in your body it will not burn calories. • Physical activity Add exercise to your daily routine and make a habit out of it. Exercise at least 150 minutes per week (moderate intensity exercise). Walking a total of 12,000 steps daily helps you stay in shape and maintain your fitness. Always remember that healthy nutrition will not make you lose weight without physical activity, and physical activity will not make you fit without healthy nutrition.
• Rate your plate on every meal Divide your plate into protein, starch, and vegetables. Always choose whole foods and avoid processed. Fill half your plate with a variety of different vegetables, quarter for protein (choose animal lean protein/plant based protein either baked/grilled) and a quarter for carbohydrate (make sure most of your daily carbohydrates are whole).
Remember that good health is a result of your overall eating pattern and every meal is an opportunity to nourish your body.
• Control your portion size Use a smaller plate, bowl or glass and choose smaller portions. Don’t exceed the amount of foods on your plate. Take your time to enjoy your food, don’t rush and chew properly- your brain needs at least 20 minutes to realise that you are

HOME & GARDEN
New year, new space How often do you make a new year’s resolution to clear the clutter in your home? You buy the boxes to get organised, you fill up the trolley cart with trash bags and you go crazy and buy a label maker.
T hen it’s time to start the declutter; but you stop. Looking at the clutter, it seems like there is a mountain you must climb to get through it, and look someone has tweeted something funny on Twitter which you have to read. Now there is a new show to watch on Netflix. Oh, wait you still must read that book on decluttering you got for Christmas! The excuses continue, and you get nowhere with tackling the clutter. This year forget the self-help books and follow these tips to slowly, but easily start the decluttering process in your home: 62 JANUARY CONNECTOR
1 Start easy - Declutter in an area that is easy to tackle, such as the kitchen. There are always out of date food items to throw away or items you don’t want to eat which you can donate to the Food Bank. Ditch the broken plates and mugs, and donate the sports bottles you received from networking events to your security guards. Just by decluttering these few items, you will find you suddenly have lots of space in your cupboards and counter tops. Once decluttered, you can then organise each area easily.
2 Start small - declutter a small area first, such as one drawer. Empty that drawer, sort the items into donate, trash or keep. Then organise what is being kept back into the drawer. Move onto the next drawer, and then #connectordubai
HOME & GARDEN the next, etc., until you have done one room. Do not take everything out of all the drawers and cupboards otherwise you will have a mountain of stuff (and a major panic attack).
3 1 in, 2 out - If you have bought two pieces of clothes while venturing to the malls, get rid of items from your wardrobe to make space for these additional items. My mantra is: put 1 item in, declutter 2 items out. The items out don’t have to be the same as the item’s going in (but it would help to ensure there is space for the additional item).
4 Keep a clutter bag - Nearly every time I open my wardrobe, I will find an item of clothing that I do not like, doesn’t fit or is just plain horrible; that item of clothing is thrown into my “clutter bag”, which is a large recyclable bag. Once it is full, I take the bag to one of the charities and donate the items. The bag is then returned to its hiding place in my wardrobe to be filled up again. I also add any other items I find in the house, which I wish to declutter. You can keep your clutter bag in the storage room, in a cupboard in the kitchen or in your wardrobe like me. Also, if you keep filling up the clutter bag, you fulfil the 1 in 2 out rule! 5 Make smart purchases - Decluttering is a waste of time, if you keep replacing your old stuff with new things. This year, ignore the sales and buy less (ok… only the essentials). Instead of buying stuff, why not buy experiences instead, such as zip lining in Dubai or going to a spa. www.connector.ae
6 Get non-boxed gifts - Instead of buying friends and family a physical item for their birthday, Eid or Christmas, why not book them an alternative gift such as an experience or adventure. No one needs another bottle of perfume for Eid. Examples I have seen of great alternative gifts currently are a cookery class at one of the 5-star restaurants and a drive on the Formula 1 track in Abu Dhabi.
7 Don’t keep guilt items- You should only have items in your home that you love to look at or use. Declutter those items that you do not like which were bought for you as presents. If you do not want to offend the gift bearer, give them an excuse such as “the maid burnt the Christmas jumper” or “the dog broke the smelly candle”.
8 Use a shopping list - Almost all of us have the bad habit of coming home with more things than intended after a shopping trip. To avoid this, make a shopping list and most importantly, stick to it! This will reduce unnecessary clutter and save you money in the long run. With thanks to Shelina Jokhiya who is the founder of DeCluttr Me.
